This article presents a review of Klaus Roth's work, published in German, on changes in cultural life in former socialist countries in Eastern Europe before and after the fall of the Soviet Union. The book is a result of papers presented by ethnologists, historians, political scientists, and sociologists at two conferences held in Germany in 2003 and 2006 on daily cultural life in European Socialist countries. In this article, Martin Franc reviews the eighth symposium of the International Commision for Research into Europe and Food History (ICREFH), which offered many papers on “The Diffusion of Food Culture in Europe from the Late Eighteenth Century to the Present Day.” Two significant works were by Derek J. Oddy and Lydia Petranova, and consequently published in the eponymous book. The memorial volume is divided in to four parts: “Food in the Family,” “The Socio-economic Environment,” “A Specialist Literature,” and “Political Context.” The book aims to offer integrated perspective on shaping European national cuisines by mapping cookbooks, culinary schools, traditions, diffusion of findings regarding the influence of food on human health, and public eateries in the historical context.
