• Immigrant youth are integrating successfully into Canada. • Immigrant youth face systematic and interpersonal discrimination. • More focus is needed on immigrants' cultural and social contributions. • Current research and policy often promote assimilation. • Inclusion and multiculturalism are required for integration. Although there is substantial research examining adult perspectives of immigration and integration, there is notably less data on youth attitudes and experiences. When youth are surveyed, a preliminary review of the existing literature reveals that non-immigrant voices are very rarely included. This systematic literature review (a) identifies the major themes and summarizes the findings of existing research; (b) determines gaps in the existing literature and; (c) proposes recommendations for future integration research, policy, and interventions. Ultimately, this paper finds that integration policy and research in Canada tends to focus on the changes required by immigrant youth but rarely discuss the cultural adaptation and inclusion required by settled Canadians. A paradigm shift in research, settlement practice, and policy is necessary to better reflect the bi-directional cultural exchange and the mutual responsibilities of integration. This paper explores the COVID-19 crisis with a focus on immigration and migration in Canada using a political economy lens. Neoliberalism has played a major role in shaping pandemic impacts and the responses to it. We critically assesses disproportionate COVID-19 impacts on migrants and immigrants. Migrants and immigrants carry the unequal burden of COVID-19 because of racialization, labour precariousness, and exposure to health risks on job sites and in the poor neighborhoods and over crowded housing in which many live in. Mobility and borders have also been cast as a particular threat during the pandemic even though domestic sources are the main sources of contagion. We examine the use of borders as filtering mechanisms during COVID-19 and the negative impacts this has had on migrant populations. While crises like pandemics pose many dangers they also open up policy windows through which progressive change may be realized. We reflect on these possibilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper provides a descriptive portrait of Romanian immigrants to Canada using statistical and historical data. It outlines the transformations of the Canadian immigration policy over a century and a half, and shows how it interacted with the migration regime in Romania to produce three main waves of Romanian immigration to Canada. Alongside migration flow data, it gives specific information on generation status, level of education, occupation categories, and income for the first generation post-communist immigrants, and for the total population of Romanian ethnic origin in Canada, using data from the 2006 and 2016 Canadian Censuses of Population. Pluralist societies face challenges developing diversity-related policies to integrate newcomers and facilitate harmonious relationships between ethnocultural minorities and majorities. The integration policies that governments implement have significant implications for intergroup relations in diverse societies. The current paper (i) discusses the characteristics of two integration policies, multiculturalism and interculturalism; (ii) examines how these integration policies have been studied within the psychological literature; and (iii) explores the policy implications of these concepts for intergroup relations research and psychosocial adaptation of immigrants. In addressing the above points, we have paid specific attention to multiculturalism in Canada and interculturalism in Europe and in Quebec, the French speaking region of Canada, which highlight the developing role pluralist integration strategies are playing in the social and policy debates surrounding integration, inclusion, and social cohesion. Immigration is fuelling most of Canada's population growth, and housing is a key component of the settlement experience. At the policy level, however, there is very little connection between services to newcomers and housing. This paper builds on what is known about immigration and housing in Canada and makes recommendations for better linking housing policy and newcomer settlement policy. In June 2005, we joined about one hundred other participants in the No One Is Illegal March on Ottawa. This 200-kilometer march was organized by Solidarity Across Borders and nonstatus immigrants living in Canada. This paper tells the story of this march and of the people who participated in the week-long event, which was part of a movement to defend the rights of nonstatus immigrants in Canada. Our desire to tell this story stems from the fact that we are still actively participating in this march in many different ways. We would like to trace some of the connections between what is really two stories: one that relates the actual march, and another that describes a documentary we made and a research project we are conducting on the march. Finally, this paper gives us an opportunity to experiment with a style of writing and publication that allows us to use both images and text in order to bring seldom-heard voices-those of non-status immigrants-into the public sphere. Focusing on the phase before immigration occurs, this paper examines the social and cultural embeddedness, as well as gendered nature, of migration decisions. Based upon focus groups and interviews with recent immigrants from the People's Republic of China in Vancouver, Canada, I explore migrants' deeply personal and multi-layered reasons for departure, challenging economistic views that tend to overvalorize the desire for improving human capital. I also consider the phenomenon of the "adventuring wife" and her "agreeing husband" through a gender lens. This paper explores the role of nonprofit organizations in the immigrant settlement and integration sector in the public policy process in three Canadian provinces. Drawing on thirty one (31) semi-structured interviews with nonprofit and mid-level policy officials (working for a provincial government) in three provinces (Ontario, British Columbia and Saskatchewan), the place of nonprofit agencies in providing input and voice to policy issues in the area of settlement and integration services is presented. Issues regarding the willingness to use advocacy/voice with government funders, the usefulness of government consultations, strategies used in approaching government, the role of research in making evidence-based cases regarding policy and program change, among other considerations are examined. The assessments provided by key nonprofit actors and government policy officials are used to bring better understanding of the perceived roles of nonprofit organizations in the daily work of policy. This paper challenges the normalised view that immigrant communities, like language and identity, are natural and depoliticised social realities. They are, in fact, carefully constructed social projects structured by people with multiple positionings who compete over unequally distributed resources. A critical and ethnographic sociolinguistic analysis reveals Toronto's Portuguese-Canadian community as a market where internal group divisions along linguistic, regional and generational lines are masked in order to appeal to the homogenising discourses of Canadian multiculturalism and Portuguese nationalism. The market is thus divided between a minority of Mainland Portuguese, whose standard language variety and dominant cultural habitus afford them positions of power, and a majority of Azorean Portuguese, whose ways of being and speaking Portuguese are delegitimised. Qualitative research methods, including semistructured interviews and participant observation, suggest that the Canadian-born inheritors of this market navigate discursive spaces which largely remain monolingually and monoculturally Portuguese and that are filled with contradictions marginalising most young people for lacking the "right" linguistic or cultural capital. There are several issues emphasized when studying a forum on arguments for and against the return of emigrants from Canada to Romania: the emigrants realize that in order to get affirmative feedback from the people in the host-country, they need to adjust their identity so that it reunites their own ethnic features with the ethnic features in the new country; it is also to be taken into consideration the fact that for the Romanians in Canada, this hybrid identity might also contain Romanian elements which are compatible with the Canadian elements, the result being the identity of a Romanian - Canadian. The objective of this paper is to establish the way in which some participants in the online Romanian forum debates see the existence of some cultural differences between them and the Canadians. We have mainly referred to the debate forum of the news website "hotnews.ro" whose topic between 2008 and 2010 was "I want to leave Canada for Romania. What would you advise me?" As far as the social negotiation is concerned (on the one hand, it deals with the interethnic negotiation between the Romanians and the Canadians, and on the other hand, it deals with the negotiation between the participants in the discussion on the online forum we analyzed), the five message fragments we have selected from the online discussion regarding the Romanian and Canadian inhabitants can be associated both with competitive and collaborative (who make compromises) negotiators. In the past decades, a number of inclusive educational programs aimed at incorporating Aboriginal cultural content and perspectives have been established in some provinces in Canada. This inclusive model has proved beneficial for mutual understanding and better relations between Aboriginals and settlers, old and new. This paper will first define and describe some of these programs and make a comment on what considerations should be taken into account to ensure that these inclusive programs best serve the needs of Aboriginal students as well as non-Aboriginal students. It is hoped that this inclusive model of education can be applied by other ethnic groups to help them address their own educational, cultural, and diversity issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on qualitative data gathered in the inner city of Winnipeg, this paper seeks to answer the following questions: What do urban Aboriginals think of African refugees? Do Aboriginals feel threatened by the arrival of refugee migrants in their neighbourhoods? If so, why and if not, why not? Findings from this exploratory study reveal a mixed picture of how Native1 inner-city residents perceive newcomer refugees. Some Aboriginals have negative perceptions of refugees, largely caused by feelings of inter-group competition over jobs and subsidized housing. Other Aboriginals appear to have a sympathetic view of refugees, since they can identify with them as racialized minorities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using multilevel models fitted to data collected by Statistics Canada and the Canadian Census, this paper assesses the individual and contextual influences of immigration and ethnicity on voluntary association membership. Our analysis is unique in two ways: (1) we explore the effects of both immigrant status and ethnicity at the individual level, and (2) we assess the role of both the immigrant population and the visible minority population at the community level. Our results demonstrate that the probability of holding an association membership increases as the time since immigration passes. We also find ethnic differences in the probability of membership, though these differences have little to do with visible minority group status. On the other hand, the contextual effects of immigration and visible minorities stand in contrast to these individual-level effects. More specifically, the probability of membership tends to be largest in communities with many immigrants but smallest in communities with many visible minorities. Consistent with Putnam's constrict thesis, these contextual effects operate in a similar manner for immigrants and native born citizens.
