The reinforced concrete (RC) shield building is an important defence layer of AP1000 nuclear islands, as it protects the steel containment vessel of the nuclear power plant. Therefore, the safety and integrity of the RC shield building must be ensured throughout the plant’s operational life under all conditions—especially the application of blast loading. This paper presents the prediction formulae for the volume and shape of damage to the RC shield buildings of AP1000 nuclear islands resulting from contact explosion. The coupled Euler-Lagrange (CEL) algorithm and the Riedel-Hiermaier-Thoma (RHT) concrete damage constitutive model were used to numerically simulate the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) between the explosives, the air and the AP1000 nuclear island. The limitations of empirical spall prediction and Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) 3-340-02 curves for shell structures are discussed. A detailed analysis reveals the relation between the volume and shape of the damage caused to the AP1000 nuclear island and the mass of explosives and concrete strength. It is also found that the lateral stiffness and tensile stiffness are the main factors that affect the damage volume and damage shape resulting from contact explosion, respectively. The health monitoring of civil infrastructure is becoming more common for investigating actual structural behaviour, allowing early damage detection and helping to protect critical structures. In the New Zealand infrastructural context in particular, the introduction of high-productivity motor vehicles (HPMVs) along with the damage caused by recent earthquakes has resulted in a growing need for verification that bridges are performing as expected. The application of “classical” instruments such as accelerometers and linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) are very expensive due to high installation costs and the need for a continuous power supply. However, radar interferometry is a promising alternative which can detect structural displacements without directly accessing the bridge, offering not only time and cost savings but also the capability to investigate structures where access is difficult or hazardous. This paper presents a health assessment of a bridge crossing the Rangitata River in New Zealand using this radar technology. Previous surveys of the bridge indicated that it was under capacity for supporting full HPMV loads. The structural performance was assessed by monitoring the maximum vertical mid-span displacements under live traffic conditions. Yachihe Bridge in China is a hybrid cable-stayed bridge with concrete decks at the side spans and a steel truss deck at the mid-span. The 800-m-long truss deck breaks a new record as the longest steel truss cable-stayed bridge in the world. Constrained by site terrain, poor transportation conditions and limited time, a cable crane was adopted for the erection of the 16-m-long truss deck segments, marking the first time that a cable crane has been used in the deck erection of a cable-stayed bridge. Bridges can be subjected to damaging environmental actions due to flooding and seismic hazards. Flood actions that result in scour are a leading cause of bridge failure, while seismic actions that induce lateral forces may lead to high ductility demand that exceeds pier capacity. When combined, seismic actions and scour can lead to effects that depend on the governing scour condition affecting a bridge. Loss of stiffness under scour can reduce the ductility capacity of a bridge but can also lead to an increase in flexibility that may reduce seismic inertial forces. Conversely, increased flexibility can lead to deck collapse due to support loss, so there exists some uncertainty about the combined effect of both phenomena. A necessary step towards the performance assessment of bridges under flooding and seismic actions is to calibrate numerical models that can reproduce structural responses under different actions. A further step is verifying the achievement of performance goals defined by codes. Structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques allow the computation of performance parameters that are useful for calibrating numerical models and performing direct checks of performance goal compliance. In this paper, various strategies employed to monitor bridge health against scour and seismic actions are discussed, with a particular focus on vibration-based damage identification methods. This paper analyses the correlation between the building quality of masonry bridges and their related ageing process. This is achieved by combining a qualitative evaluation of the construction quality, based on the Masonry Quality Index, with procedures for estimating the ageing process. In an effort to calibrate this relationship, an initial database containing 4040 bridges located in two Spanish regions was filtered with criteria based on materials (only masonry bridges are considered) and the number of recorded inspections. This resulted in a final database containing 22 bridges, which represent the case studies in this research. Next, proper fit methods were applied to the selected structures in order to segment and parametrically study the condition of ageing in relation to the construction quality. Finally, the results of this analysis were used to investigate the ageing process in relation to other factors, properties and fundamental features of the masonry structures. The developed research seeks to: (a) enlarge the existing knowledge on the quality-decay relationship of masonry structures, (b) calibrate methods based on case studies, and (c) define criteria for considering the influence and correlation between both factors. This paper addresses the optimisation of monitoring and decision-making criteria regarding the future use of structures. The current state of practice in standards and reliability framework are initially summarised. A general methodology for obtaining cost-optimal decisions is then presented on the basis of limit state design, probabilistic reliability analysis and cost estimates. The implementation of the risk-based approach is illustrated in a case study dealing with the roof of a stadium located in northern Italy. As the roof fails to comply with the requirements of the Eurocodes, the installation of a permanent monitoring system is recommended to allow for a real-time reliability assessment. The results demonstrate the potential of monitoring systems and probabilistic reliability analysis for supporting decisions regarding safety measures such as snow removal or temporary closure of the stadium, as well as reflecting the need to implement the discussed procedures in future standards. As a field of study, structural health monitoring (SHM) sits at the crossroads of sensor technology, signal processing and structural engineering. The past decade has seen rapid growth in a variety of research works in structural health monitoring. However, there is concern among infrastructure owners and operators about the useful insights that can be obtained from SHM data. In this paper, a suspension bridge is taken as an example to show the role of its SHM system in facilitating its management and maintenance. Firstly, the function of the early-warning system, which is part of the SHM system, is explained through monitoring data of the deck surface temperature and the wind velocity. Secondly, SHM data are used to detect and analyse damage in the suspenders and expansion joints. Thirdly, SHM data are utilised in a load proof test to show the global behaviour of the bridge under passing vehicle loading. Main steel bars and prestressed strands in critical parts of existing concrete girder bridges are at risk of fatigue and fracture under the combined action of heavy truck loads, increased traffic volume and the effects of environmental corrosion. Based on cumulative damage theory and fracture mechanics, this paper proposes a framework for evaluating the fatigue performance of existing concrete girder bridges. The evaluation framework contains four steps: investigation of the bridge archives; detection, monitoring and simulation; fatigue performance evaluation; and implementation of the maintenance and management recommendations. A combination of acoustic emission and weigh-in-motion (WIM) technologies was adopted to acquire vehicle information and evaluate girder performance, and a Monte Carlo method and function fitting were also applied to calculate a fatigue reliability index. The results of the evaluation indicate that the case-study bridge is extremely unlikely to fail as the result of fatigue during the design service life. In addition, the parameter analysis shows that the fatigue reliability of concrete bridges is sensitive to the combined effects of negative factors. The reliability index curve and the target value of the reliability index can be used to determine the recommended fatigue inspection intervals and the limits for the initial crack size in critical steel bars. This paper describes the design and construction of Al Emarah City Bridge in Iraq, which crosses the Tigris River. It includes a single-pylon cable-stayed bridge with a span distribution of 71.50 + 71.50 m, and its approach bridges on both sides are simply-supported steel-concrete girder bridges with spans of 12.25 m. The height of the pylon is 48.89 m, and the deck width is 20.00 m. The iconic pylon uses two slender steel frames connected by steel tubes in the longitudinal direction; each slender frame is elliptical in the transverse direction. The longitudinal dimension of the steel pylon is very small, so the stay cables are anchored on the outside of the pylon with a pin. The main girder is steel-concrete composite, and consists of two steel box girders, cross beams and a concrete deck slab. The anchorage between the main steel girder and the cable is located on the top flange of the girder and also uses a pin. An innovative type of cable with a double pin anchorage is used, tensioned by a temporary auxiliary device. The bridge opened to traffic at the end of 2017. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Making informed decisions on timely intervention for effective bridge maintenance activities relies on good quality, accurate, reliable data. Although the proper functioning of expansion joints is critical to bridge performance, long-term monitoring of their condition is challenging due to the cost of sensors and data processing. Digital image correlation (DIC) is a non-contact photogrammetry technique that can image a bridge component periodically and compute strain and deformation from images previously recorded. This paper describes a one-month-long monitoring campaign wherein a DIC system was used as a cost-effective tool for gathering data on the movement and rotation of one of the Great Belt Bridge’s expansion joints. The monitoring provided previously unavailable data, helped improve understanding of the behaviour of the joint and informed the next steps for the maintenance strategy. The results show good agreement between the DIC data and measured temperature data. A mathematical model was established which relates the air temperature to expansion joint deformation, enabling the real-time evaluation of monitoring data and the cost-efficient identification of problems in the functioning of expansion joints. Structural health monitoring (SHM) has evolved over decades of continuous progress in measuring, processing, collecting and storing massive amounts of data that can provide valuable information for owners and managers in order to control and manage the integrity of their structures. The data sets acquired from SHM systems are undoubtedly of the “big data” type due to their sheer volume, complexity and diversity, and conducting relevant analyses of their content can help to identify damage or failure during operation through the relationships between the measurements taken by multiple sensors. A great deal can be learned from these large pools of data, resulting in significant advances in efficient integrity control. From banking to retail, many sectors have already embraced big data, which is often synonymous with “big expectations”; in the present case, it offers opportunities to apply data-processing research to the development of more efficient SHM systems with real-time capabilities. By presenting various examples of bridge monitoring systems, this paper contributes to the ongoing cross-disciplinary efforts in data science for the utilization and advancement of SHM. Damage detection systems (DDSs) provide information on the integrity of structural systems in contrast to local information from inspections or non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques. In this paper, an approach is developed that utilizes DDS information to update structural system reliability and integrate this information into risk and decision analyses. The approach includes a novel performance modelling of DDSs accounting for the structural and measurement system characteristics, the damage detection algorithm (DDA) precision including type I and II errors. This DDS performance modelling provides the basis for DDS comparison and assessment in conjunction with the structural system performance including the damage and failure state dependencies. For updating of the structural system reliability, an approach is developed based on Bayesian updating facilitating the use of DDS information on structural system level and thus for a structural system risk analysis. The structural system risk analysis encompasses the static, dynamic, deterioration, reliability and consequence models, which provide the basis for calculating the direct risks due to component failure and the indirect risks due to system failure. Prediction of the service lifetime of concrete structures with respect to chloride ingress involves a number of parameters that are associated with large uncertainties. Hence, full-scale measurements are strongly in demand. This paper begins by summarizing statistical distributions based on measurements taken from the Gimsøystraumen Bridge in Norway. A large number of chloride profiles are available based on concrete coring samples, and for each of these profiles the diffusion coefficient and surface concentration (due to sea spray) are estimated. Extensive measurements of the concrete cover depth are also performed. The probability distributions are input into a prediction model for chloride concentration at the steel reinforcement. By also introducing the critical chloride concentration as a random variable, the probability of exceeding the critical threshold is determined as a function of time. To address chloride attack on the entire bridge, a system model with 90 components is introduced. Reliability updating based on observations at multiple sites along the bridge is also investigated. First-order reliability methods typically become inaccurate for large systems of this type, so an enhanced Monte Carlo simulation method is applied. In engineering, quality control in systems development ensures that products and services meet expectations. There is an increasing need to develop strategies to ensure asset quality and reduce the risk of unexpected costs. Ensuring the desired service quality with minimum interruptions requires maintenance actions when the risk of service impairment, interruption or losses in life-cycle costs reach predefined levels, which are based on performance indicators. This paper analyses a digital image correlation (DIC) system and its ability to assess performance indicators such as crack patterns, crack openings and vertical and horizontal deformation. The obtained values are then compared to goals so that structural performance assessment strategies can be implemented in an efficient and sustainable way. In particular, the system is used to obtain valuable information about the shear transfer mechanisms of reinforced concrete beams. This contribution focuses on prestressed precast beams loaded in shear following a sequence of loading and unloading cycles before the load is ultimately increased until failure. The obtained results include a load-dependent photogrammetric documentation of crack patterns, a continuous quantification of crack openings and an accurate measurement of vertical and horizontal deformation. The development of numerical tools allows the analysis of any structure, regardless of its level of complexity. Given this, emphasis must be put on conceptual design to define all characteristics of a bridge prior to its analysis. Conceptual design can be considered an art form with a unique area of competence. In Switzerland, the bridge building process is often initiated by a design competition. To efficiently enter and win these competitions, a specific conceptual design method called the “integrative design method” was developed and is presented in this paper. This method consists of creating a bridge that combines all requirements using a global approach to find a unique single structure. Applying the integrative design method thus avoids creating a structure by simply assembling a set of individual industrial products; rather, it allows all requirements to be integrated into one specific structure, with bridge engineers engaging in an integrative process that results in the creation of a unique bridge. Two complex bridges were recently completed using the concept of composite plate design. The first bridge to use this method, the Saint Lazare Bridge, crosses the busiest railway network in the city of Paris. The bridge consists of a 125-m-long steel box deck with a deck width of 17.5 m resting on V-shaped piers. The thickness of the concrete slab is 120 mm. The second bridge, currently under construction, is the Guerville Viaduct. This viaduct is a 360-m-long concrete-steel composite bridge with two I-shaped girders linked together by floor beams. The design of the central part of the deck, which is governed by a central span length of 116.5 m, requires a lighter and thinner slab than the typical reinforced concrete top slab. This led to the use of a composite plate that is 160 mm thick for the 157-m central part of the bridge. Citadelle Bridge, built for pedestrian and tramway traffic, is formed from a very slender steel box deck of 14 m width and 163 m length, supported by 30 locked coil rope cables and hung from a single semicircular arc. The arch of 180 m chord length diagonally spans the deck and is formed from a variable rhomboid steel box. The dimensions of the arch vary from 5 m width and 2.5 m depth at the crown to 2.5 m width and 5 m depth at the springings. The arch and abutments of the deck are founded on granular soil using deep foundations (barrettes) and one of the two abutments is equipped with a preloaded spring damper for seismic isolation. This paper presents the context of the project, the conceptual design process, a general description of the structure and its foundations and the final choices made for the methods chosen to construct the bridge. In recent years, a coupled composite shear wall system consisting of steel reinforced concrete (RC) composite wall piers and steel coupling beams has been widely used for lateral force resistance in super high-rise buildings in medium to high seismic zones in China. Research on the seismic behaviour of the coupled composite walls, however, has rarely been conducted. This paper presents the main experimental results of four steel beam RC composite wall subassembly specimens with endplate connections in terms of failure pattern, strength, ductility and energy dissipation. Mathematical macroscopic models are established based on the proposed mechanical and numerical techniques. The simulated load versus displacement skeleton curves and hysteretic loops are obtained and compared to experimental results. The simulation results are found to have good agreement with the experimental data, indicating the applicability of the proposed nonlinear modelling techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationship between structure and architectural form is particularly difficult and significant in buildings with complex geometry. A notable example of this is the Philarmonie de Paris, which opened in January 2015 and is one of the major recent buildings to be constructed in France. Designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, it is notable both because of its remarkable exterior volume and the interior concert hall with its distinctive cantilevering tiers. Thus, it constitutes an excellent case study of the challenges implementing a structural design with complex geometry. This paper presents a critical assessment of the building’s structural design, considered in relation to its architectural shape and the necessity and capacity to adapt to its very complex geometries, as well as the difficulties that this engendered. The steel connection design of the main hall tiers (which include prestressed bolted connections with unusual geometry and configurations, together with complex supports combining bolted connections and prestressed bars anchored to concrete structural elements), and the process of erecting the “ecran” (literally “screen” in French), a unique piece with a main span of 60 m and a cantilever of 25 m, are especially significant in this sense. Sustainable structural design considers all actions and decisions pertaining to the economic, social and environmental impacts throughout the service life of a structure. For bridges, life-cycle analysis (LCA) includes an inspection and maintenance scenario for bridge components. The assessment of the average service life for each component is generally based on the experience of experts so that the applied measures and actions maintain the whole bridge in a good condition. However, this approach is limited. Firstly, defining a standard framework for maintenance does not take all uncertainties (epistemic and random) into account in terms of the degradation of different bridge components in varying types of environment. Secondly, some degradation processes accelerate or decelerate over time, so kinetic modelling is needed. Thirdly, it is not flexible enough to be included in an optimization process where different maintenance actions and intervals are sought (e.g. minimizing economic, environmental and societal impacts, maximizing accessibility and service level of a structure, etc.) while satisfying quality constraints. This paper focuses on the experimental calibration of the numerical model of a stand in Dragão Stadium based on genetic algorithms. A finite-element numerical model was developed of a group of seating deck units including the connections between them and the connections with the stands. Dynamic tests were conducted on the seating decks in the north and south stands using an enhanced version of the frequency domain decomposition method (EFDD) in order to identify the local dynamic properties, namely the natural frequencies and modal configurations. Experimental calibration of the numerical model was performed using an iterative method based on a genetic algorithm. The stability of a significant number of parameters, considering different initial populations, proved the robustness of the adopted algorithm in the scope of the optimization of the numerical model. The calibration results demonstrate very good agreement between the numerical and experimental modal responses, showing a significant improvement on the numerical model before calibration. This resulted in a more effective connection between the seating deck units compared to the planned design and higher variability in the characteristics of the support conditions between the seating deck units and the stand beams, as evidenced by visual inspections carried out in situ. Engineers in developed nations are increasingly turning their attention to preserving, adapting and extending the operating life of existing structures; this is particularly true of France, which has an important historic, postwar and recent building and infrastructure stock. Environmental and financial concerns mean that adaptation and maintenance are often preferred to demolition and rebuilding. However, urban development may mean that wind conditions on-site are very different from the time of construction, as new major structures can have a significant impact on wind loading on neighbouring structures. Codes and standards have also evolved over the years, and climate change may lead to increased frequency and/or strength of winds. In France, the adoption of the Eurocodes and a series of strong winter storms led to significant changes in the late 1990s and early 2000s. This paper illustrates the resulting challenges and opportunities for structural engineers via case studies regarding historic structures and bridges upon which the authors have worked. The La Défense business district presents an example of good practice in evaluating the effect of new structures on their neighbours, and the Pont Albert Louppe demonstrates how relatively small aerodynamic improvements to existing structures can greatly reduce their impact on neighbouring structures. After massive rock falls from a cliff cut off Réunion Island’s current four-lane coastal road, a decision was made to replace it with the New Coastal Road, allowing the inhabitants of Réunion Island—situated in the Indian Ocean to the east of Madagascar—to travel between Saint-Denis and its commercial harbour quickly and safely. Saint-Denis is the capital in the east and the harbour is approximately 20 km west, near to La Possession. Almost completely situated at sea, the project stretches over 12.5 km and will primarily consist of the Grande Chaloupe Viaduct—a series of dykes spanning a total length of 6.7 km—and a viaduct spanning 5.4 km that is made up of seven viaducts of equal length. This paper examines a large viaduct prefabricated in its entirety near the harbour and then assembled at sea using the cantilever method. Due to its wide deck (28.9 m) and thin webs, the analysis focuses on the safe design of a structure situated in an environment prone to cyclones, strong swells and seismic events. The Vidourle Viaduct is an iconic structure on the Nîmes-Montpellier Bypass (Contournement Nîmes-Montpellier or CNM in French), the first dual-track, mixed-traffic, high-speed railway line (HSL) in France. The viaduct is 159 m long and 14.1 m wide, and consists of one Warren main bridge and two half-through access bridges. The aesthetic features of the viaduct were designed by Alain Spielmann’s architectural office. This paper describes its structural design and construction methods. The mixed traffic feature of the CNM imposes several constraints on its structural design, particularly on viaduct geometry and design loads. Moreover, the viaduct sits in an area known for its torrential flooding, hence the pier design was optimized to reduce the impact on the riverbed. As per Eurocodes, the structural design was verified for static, dynamic and seismic responses, as well as rail-structure interactions. The steel frame was manufactured in Switzerland, transported by special road convoys and assembled on-site. This paper illustrates the prosthetic reconstruction of a historic masonry viaduct in Algeria. Two of the viaduct arches on the left bank that collapsed because of soil instability have been replaced with a stayed girder that allows for future soil kinematics while restoring the compression in the remaining masonry arches on the right bank. The numerical simulations of the viaduct wreckage needed to assess the integrity of the standing portion and the main issues in the subsequent design and construction of this pioneering intervention are discussed. Civil construction is a highly uncertain endeavour that entails a considerable risk, as attested to by the succession of incidents and accidents reported the world over. The reasons for this situation need to be identified before strategies can be adopted with a view of reducing the construction-related risks. Taking the forensic investigations of a series of accidents as a starting point, this article explores the generally applicable lessons learnt from those case studies. Such surveys show that the problems to be dealt with in everyday practice are rather elementary and often attributable to human error. Basic principles and recommendations are therefore put forward for the design, erection and use of temporary structures in general and ancillary equipment for construction processes in particular, aimed at reducing the risks associated with such activities. Moreover, as there is no general consensus on reliability requirements for the temporary structures, this paper addresses the establishment of acceptable life safety risk and the associated reliability levels. The requirements put forward aim to ensure the same statistical fatality rate per unit of time as for the permanent structures. On 24 August 2012, a box-girder bridge collapsed under overload in China. The failed bridge served as the ramp of a city viaduct. The accident occurred when four trucks were crossing the bridge. It caused three deaths, five injuries and traffic disruption. This paper presents a forensic diagnosis of the failed bridge. Four possible causes of the structural failure are analyzed and verified through on-site graphic investigation, structural analysis and numerical simulation. Based on the accumulated information, the failure mechanism is derived and the failure process is identified. The results indicate that overall instability under the unusually heavy weight of vehicles led to rotation of the girder but did not directly cause the failure of the superstructure. A large redistribution of vertical reactions due to geometrical nonlinearity led to failure of the bent caps, which was the primary reason for the collapse of the bridge. It is suggested that lateral safety should be taken seriously for similar types of bridges and substructure strength should be adequate for future design of similar structures, especially in heavy vehicle areas. Scour around bridge piers might cause a decrease in lateral support at bridge foundations, and the simultaneous lateral loads would threaten the safety of existing bridges across rivers. Mitigation of foundation scour should be performed based on a comprehensive assessment of scour risk, combined with a thorough investigation of the uncertainties associated with the risk assessment procedure. However, in the commonly used risk assessment processes, identification of risk sources and determination of uncertainty propagation are based on experts’ experience. Moreover, the measured data from inspection of existing bridges cannot be fully utilized. In this paper, an inversion-theory-based method is proposed to evaluate the probability of risk events. First, risk sources were identified through an analysis of equations specified in Chinese bridge design codes. Based on the proposed method, prior information of the risk factors and measured scour data were taken into account, so that posterior distribution and statistical characteristics of the several risk sources could be obtained. Finally, the probability of risk events was determined and uncertainty propagation between risk sources and risk events revealed. To verify the proposed method and analyze the influence of prior information on the result, a case study was conducted and the information requirements of the method discussed. This paper reports on the development and fabrication of precast bridge piers with unique creative shapes and more accurate geometry control methods using building information modelling, a new form of information processing and collaboration in which data are embedded within 3D models. Panelized formworks were created by digital fabrication from the 3D design models and attached to common steel formworks. During fabrication of precast segments, key parameters for geometry control were captured by laser scanning. The design models from the algorithm modelling were compared to fabrication models to provide error adjustment during assembly. Before assembly of the segments at a construction site, instructions for geometry control were provided to ensure the final target geometry of the bridge piers. Deployable double-layer tensegrity grids (DDLTGs) are pre-stressed spatial frames containing two networks of tensile members forming the top and bottom chords in the form of tessellations, the nodes of which are linked by vertical and/or inclined web members in compression (usually struts) and/or in tension (usually cables), in such a way that these structures are able to be folded and unfolded. This paper presents a procedure to design, fabricate and assemble a light and inexpensive DDLTG composed of tensegrity modules Quastrut-S. A prototype 4×4 m grid structure was constructed, in a short time frame, to test the structural behavior and deployability of the DDLTG. In its folded configuration, the perimeter of the structure is less than 1.80 m, being contained in a cylinder of 0.28 m radius and 1.70 m height. Changsha Maglev line is a low-speed magnetic levitation (Maglev) line for which traffic was opened in late December 2015. The simply-supported guideway beams (SGBs) of this maglev line adopted a rectangular cross-section. Cross beams were used to connect the SGBs for the first time in this bridge. In this paper, relevant design specifications, geometry of the guideway beam and the accelerated construction method are described. Simply supported steel truss bridge has been widely used in the construction of railway lines over the past decades in China due to its light weight, simple structure and convenient construction. This bridge type was used for the New Yellow River Bridge in the Huang-Han-Hou railway line. The span of the New Yellow River Bridge is 156 m and it is presently the longest span simply supported steel truss railway bridge in China. The objective of this paper is to highlight the case features of this simply supported steel truss bridge. The structural components, structural dimensions and design criteria are introduced; results of modal analysis are explored. In addition, key issues associated with structural design are analyzed including disconnections in stringers, longitudinal force in track and seismic response induced by track-bridge interaction. The fundamental design theory of reinforced concrete deep beams is not consistent with that of shallow beams due to non-compliance with the plane section assumption. This paper proposes a grid model that is valid for the flexural capacity prediction and reinforcement design of both shallow and deep beams, which unifies the design process and extends the sectional analysis to deep beams. The grid model is actually based on structural analysis such that stress distribution can be calculated automatically without the plane section assumption. In order to apply sectional design principles, it assumes that design of the critical section is independent of the status of other sections, which means that other sections will remain elastic when the critical section fails. As a result, by inserting the concerned section into the grid model with non-linear material constitutive relationship and failure criteria, the capacity prediction and reinforcement design on that section can be achieved. The axial grid in the grid model guides the design of the flexural reinforcement in two kinds of layouts. Two series of experiments are listed to validate the model. The results of the proposed method are also compared with other wellestablished methods, for example traditional sectional method, layered section approach and strut-and-tie model (STM) method. As our transportation infrastructure ages and the challenge of keeping it serviceable grows, the need for improved condition information on which to make good cost-effective maintenance decisions becomes ever more vital. Gathering this condition information requires structural health monitoring and inspection on a grand scale and, for it to be useful, it must be accurate, inexpensive, easy to interpret and avoid interfering with traffic flows--whether rail or highways. Digital image correlation (DIC) is a noncontact photogrammetry technique that can be used for monitoring by imaging a bridge periodically and computing strain and displacement from images recorded at different times or operating conditions. This paper discusses the use of DIC for determining the in situ stress state for steelwork details on the London's Docklands Light Railway bridge structures, including a fatigue-sensitive existing detail with a stress concentration and an impact damaged area, with a view to avoiding the need for strengthening. The Viaduct 1 located on the Caracas-La-Guaira Highway in Venezuela collapsed in March 2006. The structure built in 1953, consisted of three double-hinged arch ribs made of plain concrete, spanning 152 m over the Tacagua creek, and two approach bridges for a total length of approximately 300 m. The reactivation of an ancient landslide affected the Caracas side of the Viaduct, shortening the arch span by more than 1 m, which eventually led to its collapse. This paper summarizes the results from the geotechnical investigation, the impact of the landslide on the structure from 1987 to 2006, the soil--structure interaction and the rehabilitation measures to extend the service life of the bridge, which included external post-tensioning of the ribs, design of a plastic hinge at the crown and lateral translation of the structure. The paper concerns determination of defect factors for a road bridge made of prestressed concrete. Cracking and permanent deformations of the continuous triple-span road bridge made of prestressed concrete were reported by road administration. Inspection of the bridge was carried out. Bridge design and erection documentation were researched. Hypotheses concerning defect factors were put forward. Parametric analysis of the bridge was carried out. The analysis showed that the cause of observed defects was faulty design of prestressing, namely: underestimation of prestressing force losses, underestimation of the influence of concrete shrinkage, and inappropriate tendon layout which introduced rapid changes to prestressing force. The general conclusions are: (a) symmetric prestressing of continuous main girders should be applied in zones where sagging and hogging bending moments occur in turns, (b) long prestressing tendons should be applied with care due to substantial prestressing force losses that may occur, (c) anchoring numerous tendons at the same crosssection should be avoided since it results in rapid variation of prestressing force, (d) variations of structure deformations due to prestressing should be recorded and checked against the predicted ones. Expansive internal sulphate reaction of concrete due to delayed ettringite formation (DEF) can damage concrete structures severely. DEF is defined as the formation of ettringite in a concrete after setting, and without any external sulphate supply but with water supply. This phenomenon occurs in concretes exposed to frequent humidity or contact with water, and subjected to a relatively high thermal treatment (>65°C) or having reached high temperatures during casting. This reaction may cause large structural disorders due to unexpected deformations and additional stresses in concrete and reinforcement, and therefore knowledge about how to deal with such structures affected by DEF is essential. After a presentation of the disorders due to DEF and an analysis of their causes based on cases encountered in practice, the paper presents the three steps of the appraisal methodology by developing the assessment based on numerical modelling, and reviews the various treatment solutions that may be implemented to deal with existing affected structures whose serviceability and structural safety may constitute a serious concern. The hanger-to-girder connection is a vital load-bearing component of suspension bridges. However, two types of premature cracking (types A and B) in hanger-to-girder connections of the Runyang Suspension Bridge have been observed only several years after the bridge was open to traffic. This paper presents the field inspections on the pattern, location and propagation of cracks. To further investigate the mechanism of cracking, a multi-scale finite element (FE) model of the bridge is developed. It is observed from FE analysis results that under vehicle loads, large stress range and significant stress concentration exist. The type A cracks are mainly due to the discontinuity of hanger-to-girder connections and in-plane shear/bending deformation, and out-of-plane bending deformation of the welded connections accelerated type B cracking. To this end, probabilistic FE analyses are performed, and the predicted fatigue lives of the hanger-to-girder connections are obtained and compared with those in the field, where good agreement is observed. Covered bridges are well-known ancient structures in China due to their unique construction and appearance. Among the remaining covered bridges, cantilever covered bridges have been best preserved, as they are mostly distributed in remote and isolated mountain areas and are thus free from the destruction caused by modern civilization. Changfeng covered bridge, located in a mountain area in Xinhua County, Hunan, China, is a well-preserved cantilever timber bridge with more than 150 years of history and is still in service today. This paper describes the structures and component materials of this particular bridge in detail. The novel construction idea and its functional flexibility are also discussed. The structural system efficiently reduces the deflections and bending moments of the wooden beams, thus extending the spans. The stress state and mechanical behaviour of the bridge were also analyzed using the finite element method. According to the results, the bridge transfers the loads downward layer-by-layer through its cantilevers. The various cantilever beams tend to even the forces and provides a better structural integrity and safety. This ancient wooden covered bridge should be well protected for its special features of light weight, large carrying capacity and environmental friendliness. Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have become an integral part of the construction industry because of their versatility, high strength-toweight ratio, enhanced durability, resistance to fatigue and corrosion, accelerated construction and lower maintenance and life-cycle costs. However, all-composite structural bridge systems have specific shortcomings such as high initial costs, low stiffness and existence of brittle failure modes. To make the best use of materials and overcoming the above shortcomings, combinations of FRP and conventional materials have recently been investigated. The Second Wuhu Bridge is a mega project that will cross the Yangtze River in Anhui Province, China. The main bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with an 806 m main span. Its upcoming connections on both sides are 41.03 km in total. This project needs to be completed within 4 years. To meet this strict time demand, prefabricated, externally prestressed segmental box-girder bridges are utilized using an industrialized method. The moment-curvature skeleton curve of a cross-section, and the forcedisplacement skeleton curve of shear wills, are both simplified to four lines represented by four reference points: the cracking, yield, peak and ultimate points. Based on traditional flexural theory and flat section assumptions, considering the effect of different axial forces and the influence of the edge constraints in the end-zones on the values of the peak and ultimate points, a theory for calculating the four reference points of the moment-curvature skeleton curve was established. Based on the four reference points of the momentcurvature skeleton curve, a theory for calculating the four reference points of the force-displacement skeleton curve of shear walls was established. This theory considers the influence of shear on the top displacement of shear walls. Based on the equations in this paper, self-made programs were made to obtain the force-displacement skeleton curves precisely. To validate the accuracy of the theory, some examples of analyses in the relevant literature were used to compare the analytical values with the test results, which were found in good agreement. Load path network method is an equilibrium-based method for the design and analysis of three-dimensional structures based on the lower bound theorem of the theory of plasticity. The goal of this method is to stimulate the exploration of possible three-dimensional flows of internal forces in equilibrium in a structure in order to help the integration of structural concerns in the design process of a building project. For creating a three-dimensional load path, the method constructs a strut-and-tie model by means of a special kind of network which connects a given set of points in three-dimensional space. This network is statically determinate and non-kinematic. The construction process of such networks may be easily controlled in order to obtain suitable load paths. The topic of progressive collapse of structures has increasingly received particular consideration over recent years, with numerous studies of various forms seeking to explore the complex mechanics of the problem and define ways of minimising its effects. Through a continuing research programme at Imperial College London, considerable advance has been made in understanding the physical features of the progressive collapse response of frame structures, identifying the role of the several different controlling parameters and compiling simplified methods for simulating particular effects. Knowledge of the subject has therefore improved to a considerable extent, that it is now possible to make quantitatively justified assessments of s:ructural robustness by specifying the reasons why a structure might be susceptible to progressive collapse as well as to identify potential methods for enhancing performance. The present paper reviews previous developments at Imperial, evaluates information obtained from relevant experimental studies conducted by other research groups and assesses the progress made both in deve oping a scientific understanding of the subject and establishing improved ways of tackling the problem in practice. Chuan-Dou style wood construction is one of the most widely used structures in Chinese history, mainly used to build residential houses in south China. As there were some common failures observed after severe earthquakes in past 20 years, it is urgent to study its seismic performance and retrofitting methods to mitigate the earthquake hazard. This paper presents the experimental results of quasi-static tests on two full-scale, one-storey, two-bay Chuan-Dou style wood frames and two groups of mortise-tenon joints. Experimental results showed that Chuan-Dou style wood frame exhibited reasonable seismic performance in terms of energy dissipation, strength degradation and deformation capacity, but its lateral stiffness is insufficient. Seismic performance of joints plays an important role on frame performance, which will be the key to improve the seismic performance of Chuan-Dou style wood construction.
