Toward the end of the 1920's, a group of Japanese immigrants settled in a small colony, Bastos, in Sao Paulo State. Some of them came with their families; others came with made-up families in order to comply with Brazilian immigration laws and never saw their relatives again. After achieving success as small cotton farmers, the immigrants had to turn to poultry farming as a result of low prices in the cotton market. Yet, as a result of the Brazilian economic crisis in the 1980's, Japanese-Brazilians, the children and grandchildren of Japanese immigrants, began a second flow consisting of transmigration between Bastos and Japan that continues to this day. The aim of this research is to compare the familial relationship of the immigrants to the transmigrants, by focusing on the different phases of international migration. The earlier flow from Japan to Brazil was directed to agriculture and the second one was intended to satisfy the need of cheap labor in the Japanese factories. Although the first international movement consisted of families, and was intended to be temporary, it became permanent after the Second World War. The second flow also started as temporary and included in the beginning only men and women who left their families behind. However, the labor flow gradually changed into a familial one, and showed a trend of permanent settlement in Japan. Nevertheless, the 2009 world economic crisis affected the jobs of immigrants and they began returning to Brazil. As this research was conducted in Bastos in the years 2005 and 2006, we focused on the familial relationship of the old immigrants settled in this city and their descendants, and also on the familial relationship of Japanese-Brazilians who, after working for some years in Japan, returned to Bastos. Since the global release of the World Wide Web in 1994, the migration pattern of the highly trained individuals from developing nations, often referred to as Brain Drain, has dramatically increased. Despite debates over the positives and negative consequences, there is mounting evidence that these migration flows are both a product, and a compounding engine, of asymmetrical global development. Rarely considered, though, is the role played by new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) like the Internet. However, contemporary trends do suggest a strong association between the global diffusion of new ICTs and the increase in migration from less-developed to advanced nations or what this paper refers to as Digital Brain Drain. Also, not considered is how Foreign Aid efforts like ICT for development, or ICT4D, initiatives may be inadvertently contributing to Brain Drain, and perhaps paradoxically neutralizing efforts to reduce global disparities like those promoted by the United Nations' Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To begin to fill the gap in the literature, this paper offers various intersectional lenses by which to frame the phenomenon of Digital Brain Drain and an analysis of current trends, while also suggesting a strategic research agenda to assist policy-makers address this important 21st century intersectional, problematic. Sociologists have increasingly focused their analytical lenses in recent years on the role of nonhuman animals in the fabric of social life. This paper builds on this work by foregrounding the generative function of culture in defining relationships with animals. Based primarily on qualitative ethnographic and interview data, it presents an analysis of Alberta, Canada's province-wide rat control program that has allowed Alberta to boast a "rat-free" status for decades. I investigate the significance of this institutional rat control effort in Alberta's cultural life, and why being "rat free" is a meaningful distinction for Albertans. I will specifically argue that Alberta's rat control program has been shaped by the cultural context in which it has emerged, one in which whiteness and conservatism are culturally preeminent and defined by a potent nativist aversion to myriad forms of outside influence. In the process, I advance a framework for understanding multispecies relationships that draws on Bourdieu's notion of the habitus, which I call the environmental habitus. Using this formulation, I demonstrate the coconstitutive relationship between material human-rat interactions and the systems of cultural meaning within which they occur. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paper Proposal: Islamic Governance and the Democratic Processes M. A. Muqtedar KhanAssociate Professor, University of DelawareIn my paper I first articulate, from an Islamist perspective, what constitutes the modern notion of Islamic governance. I take the objectives of the Islamic state as articulated by Ibn Taymiyyah, Maududi, Nabbhani and Qutb and examine the Islamic sources for ethical governance -- such as the idea of Shura (consultative governance), Bayah (pledge of allegiance), Ijma (consensus) and the notion of an Islamic constitution. Based on these sources I develop a model of Islamic governance and then argue that none of the above can be achieved without a systematic democratization of society and the application of democratic processes in the system of governance. Thus arguing that Islam and democracy are not just compatible, but that democracy is an essentially and necessary ingredient of Islamic governance. I take the debate away from the questions of the Islamic state and whether Islamic values and democratic values are compatible. Islamists have resisted and even rejected these lines of argument on the grounds that these arguments privilege modernity and democracy a priori and then evaluate Islam using modernity as a standard. I start with the Islamist premise and using Islam as the standard measure the necessity of democratic processes and conclude that democracy is necessary. I believe that this line of argumentation will have a greater impact on convincing traditional and political Muslims of the need for democratization and also allay their perceived fears that democracy is a threat to Islam. This paper examines economic redevelopment in a small Northern New England city historically dependent on the pulp and paper industry. After a century as the economic base of the community, the city's pulp mill was closed and dismantled in 2007, marking the end of the community's identity as a papermaking center. However, the environmental legacy of pulp production poses a number of challenges to redevelopment efforts. In this paper, I focus on data from the US Forest Service Forest Inventory Analysis, using a first-world political ecology approach to understanding the relationship between the historical political economy, the contemporary structure of the surrounding forest, and the community's options for the future. More than a century of forest management for pulpwood production has left the surrounding region with a relatively young forest comprised of smaller-diameter and lower-value timber stands. Partly as a result of the structure of the resource base, rather than higher value-added forest products manufacturing, large-scale biomass energy production has emerged as the primary new wood-based industry in the study community. Coupled with shrinking local and regional markets for pulpwood, management for biomass promises to further reshape the forest. However, it is not yet clear if emerging biomass markets will result in improved stand quality or an even younger forest--or with what implications for the sustainability and functioning of the forest ecosystem. This working paper presents some preliminary results of an ongoing doctoral research project. The basic idea is to articulate two very distinct but nevertheless convergent phenomena, which deeply mark the actual 'democratic' scenery in Europe and worldwide. The first is the rampant depoliticization that, besides being coextensive to the closure of the intense political sequences which characterized the last century, seems to relegate the present to a limbo of political impotence. Indeed not only is it difficult even to imagine a way out from the actual impasse, but also when something new seems to take shape, it is quickly neutralized by the omniphagic power of the status quo. On the other hand, while the old left wing organizations head toward their complete decomposition, more and more frequently the widespread sense of frustration affecting growing parts of the population explodes in outbursts of hostility that in some cases take the form of proper urban insurrections. Among all aspects of the phenomenon I called 'unstructured youth opposition', the most perplexing one is the absence of both an ideological background and explicit claims. Trough the lens of an empirical study that the author is developing in underprivileged areas of Dublin - Ireland, this paper aims to illustrate the way working class community organizations, when confronted with exceptional events involving underprivileged youth, unequivocally show their level of depoliticization. Indeed, being incapable to explore the politicizing possibilities those erratic events carry with them, they end up supporting a repressive police management of the situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this original conference paper, I analyze ethnographic and interview data tracing the lives of one immigrant community in Chicago as they respond to the election and first year of Donald Trump's presidency. This project reveals how political discourses about who deserves to live in the U.S. are reproduced on the ground, as individual immigrants struggle to cope with feelings of vulnerability in the face of aggressive immigration enforcement. I argue that individual migrants utilize different moral frameworks to evaluate their own and others' legal irregularities, and to justify why some people are targeted for deportation while others are not. The construction of moral hierarchies can comfort individual immigrants as they try to anticipate their own risk of being apprehended (and frame themselves as not vulnerable), yet these social divisions also disrupt networks of social support and harm community solidarity. At the same time, as the federal government broadens its definition of "criminal aliens"- from law-breakers to all undocumented immigrants- this rhetorical shift is motivating changes within the immigrant community by sparking criticism towards established narratives about immigrant criminality, ultimately breaking down the distinctions between criminal and illegal drawn during the Obama presidency. These ideological shifts provide new opportunities for solidarity by motivating interest in a more inclusive social justice framework among people who were previously disengaged from politics. This paper contributes to sociological literature by showing how cultural narratives about illegality shape the way networks of support operate within the immigrant community by shifting collective understandings of who belongs in the community and who deserves to be removed. In recent years, colleges and universities have started to reassess their approach to families and redefine appropriate roles for parents. Still, we know very little about the role of institutional offices in bridging the gap between students, families, and the university or the ways their responses are organized by families' race, class, and gender. To obtain an institutional perspective on the ways in which college administrators and staff interact with families and shape policy to address their concerns, this paper asks: 1) How do college staff think about policies about families? 2) How do families perceive college personnel and how do college personnel perceive families, and how do these perceptions vary by race, class, and gender? 3) Does the view and practice of familial assistance vary by the characteristics of the college personnel in particular their race/ethnicity or gender? Drawing on 33-indepth interviews with a diverse sample of college personnel as well as ethnographic data collected at on-campus family-centered events, I find that: 1) the commercialization of higher education and the growing consumerist mentality of advantaged parents has led institutional offices to restructure its approach to interacting with families, often strategizing around FERPA/HIPPA constraints; 2) college personnel of color are frequently called upon by families of color to serve as liaisons on their behalf and are generally much more attuned to the variety of family dynamics of students of color than are white personnel; 3) college personnel work to assist students holistically, throughout their undergraduate career, but say that they interact with families mostly during times of crisis; 4) differences exist in the types of resources and information that families solicit from college personnel, which largely varies by race, class, gender, and immigration status; as such, college personnel grapple with ways of ensuring transparency to all families. This paper demonstrates that higher education policies and practices should not be thought of as "one-size-fits-all" and calls for higher education institutions to employ strategies and mechanisms that better support increasingly diverse families as a way to ensure inclusivity and student engagement. This paper uses historical analysis of climate science in the US (from its late colonial origins and into its projected futures) to argue that the dynamics of how scientists came to measure, know, and understand climate have changed over time as a result of struggles within the scientific enterprise intersecting with state-making practices and broader practices of government. I theorize this process as meteorological government. I define meteorological government as the process by which actors deploy meteorological knowledge to constitute, categorize, and calculate climatic and social orders simultaneously. This paper outlines the basis for this theory, drawing from empirical analyses of three consecutive transformations in basic understandings of climate. The first understanding, prevalent from 1780 to the 1840s encompassed 'climate' as a body/atmospheric dynamic. Meteorologists elaborated a colonial worldview that held bodies and climates to be intertwined and, in the American context, undergoing rapid changes. This locus transformed when meteorology, as a scientific enterprise, intersected bureaucratic state formation and industrial capitalism from the 1850s to 1920. Over the course of this period, professional climatologists helped to rationalize climate as a statistically "stable" (that is, temporally unchanging) category tied to delineated geographic areas. Weather and climate were successfully integrated into both a capitalist economic order and the supporting material infrastructures that helped to make nature legible to the circulation of capital. Meteorological government in these terms began to unravel in the mid-20th century. In particular, as a result of the tight integration of atmospheric scientists and new scientific institutions in the post-WWII context, scientists elaborated an understanding of global climate as a radically destabilizing system. A conundrum ensued by the 1980s, when climate science became politicized in a way that fragmented the existing and emerging relationships between science, the state, and capital. I conclude by showing how a historicized theory of meteorological government sheds light on the plausible long-term future relationship between climate change, science, and govemmentality, which likely entails a fragmentation of climate expertise and a central concern with geopolitical security for protected and "adaptive" classes. To the latter, the full paper will draw on empirical analysis of 'climate security' expertise and suggest how that may field may become dominant--and deeply problematic--in a post- Trump or otherwise immediately counter-populist political environment. On November 25, 2018 a Chinese researcher name He Jiankui created headlines around the world when he announced that he had created the first CRISPR-edited babies. Scientists in genetics and genomics were shocked and even those leading the charge for CRISPR technology felt his alleged work had gone too far, too fast. This announcement highlighted that ethical, legal, social and policy implications (ELSI) research is vital in the rapidly-growing field of genetics and genomics. There is a need for new models of integrating ELSI research into ongoing and future genomic advancement. In this paper, we present one model, Embedded ELSI Ethnography, for conducting research that allows for both the study of complex genetics and genomics projects and ethical intervention into complex scientific inquiry. This paper will describe the opportunities and dilemmas our interdisciplinary team has encountered as we initiated an embedded study of a preference-sensitive, pragmatic clinical trial. The trial's goal is to test a "risk-stratified" approach to breast cancer prevention and early detection on a large population. As genomics research expands to include large clinical studies, it is critical for social scientists to find innovative ways to be a central part of the research process. We will describe in detail both the methodology and the rationale for undertaking embedded work, and offer specific examples from our study. Embedded ethnographies allow researchers to: 1) observe challenges and issues that emerge in real time, 2) ascertain the views of both key stakeholders and study participants, 3) evaluate the impact of the study on key public policy and ethical concerns, and 4) contribute to answering ethical concerns as they arise, thus improving the implementation of pragmatic trials. We will share our experiences using this methodology, the challenges we have faced and our advice to future researchers engaging in this type of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For-profit corporations generate much human misery and environmental destruction. According to many critics of capitalism, corporate law is a major culprit, as the legal model of shareholder supremacy enables corporations to put owners' short-term financial interests before all others. Benefit corporation law, the most significant innovation in state corporate law in decades, aims to undermine that model. This new form of progressive corporate law enables the creation of mission-driven for-profit firms that protect directors from liability for pursuing both a social purpose and private profits. Based on two original datasets on benefit corporations' organizational characteristics and online public discourse, this paper characterizes the organizational implementation of benefit corporation law and advances a sociological understanding of how organizations interact with their legal environments. Using descriptive statistics and content analysis, the paper identifies four major findings. First, with few relatively few firms incorporating as benefit corporations and even fewer purporting to provide any benefits, benefit corporation law is not demonstrably transforming corporate America. Second, some important organizational niches appear to be emerging, most notably an ecosystem of social enterprises that use their benefit corporation legal form to signal a shared moral economy. Third, benefit corporations narrate a neoliberal vision of progressive capitalism as good, green commerce. In this vision, firms' goods and services enhance human health and the environment. Finally, most benefit corporations give no outward indication (at least on their websites) that benefit corporation law matters to them, as either a useful resource, a regulatory threat, or a basis of market differentiation. The context of corporate law in general, and the proliferation of a voluntary progressive reform therein, provides an opportunity to revisit legal endogeneity theory. The findings challenge legal endogeneity theory's presumption that organizations' interactions with their legal environments are motivated in large measure by concerns about compliance. This paper explores how and why state and non-state actors who participate in pretrial investigations in the Bolivian city of El Alto, produce, negotiate, and experience waiting. Specifically, it considers the protracted aftermath of a linchamiento, an act of collective violence in which residents take justice into their own hands, in the city of El Alto, Bolivia. Residents of Villa de Ramos neighborhood physically attacked an off-duty police sub-officer whom they mistook for a burglar. Because the police sub-officer died on his way to the hospital due to the injuries he had sustained in his body, a homicide prosecutor opened investigations against the perpetrators of the act. During a three-year process, the sub-officer's family sought, unsuccessfully, to take the case to trial. Two of the alleged perpetrators avoided becoming the target of judicial investigations altogether, while another seven were indicted and spent different times intervals of time in prison. Based on participant observation and interviews with some of these actors, their lawyers, and state officials, this paper argues that waiting is multifaceted. It is not only a tool of state domination (Auyero 2012; Bourdieu 1998) nor it only benefits those better positioned to endure long-term judicial processes (Galanter 1974; Schwartz 1975). Long a subject of scholarly interest, doctor-patient communication has traditionally occupied a zone of professional discretion largely beyond the reach of formal law. In the United States, this situation changed dramatically in 2003, when the handling of medical information was, for the first time, subjected to explicit Federal regulation under the "administrative simplification provisions" of the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (IIIPAA). Nonetheless, much as socio-legal scholars have found in other domains, ambiguities in HIPAA's legal mandate spawned divergent constructions of "compliance" within the newly regulated organizational fielded. This paper examines how hospitals across the United States implemented the new regulatory regime, and how organization-level variations in implementation affected the perceived quality of practitioner-patient communication. Using original survey data on IIIPAA-related practices in US hospitals, coupled with public-access data on hospital-patient communication, this paper demonstrates that the quality of provider-patient communication co-varies with IIIPAA implementation, albeit in complex ways: Although many common compliance practices appear to undermine communication, a subset of patient-empowering practices may reduce or even reverse these adverse effects. In addition, hospital culture significantly moderates the impact of several compliance activities, with some activities that improve communication in the least favorable hospitals also impeding communication in hospitals that might otherwise excel. Looking across a large, representative sample of American hospitals, this study reveals the important role of previously invisible legal and organizational constraints. In the process, it also reveals significant organization-level variations in legal implementation, and significant interactions between organizational culture and legal impact. The strike is increasingly recognized, if only in its absence, as essential to the fortunes of the labor movement and the trajectory of inequality. The recent teacher strike wave is notable for its rapid spread, for peaking after years of quiescence, for surprising commentators and pundits, and for the ways it may change the direction of educational reform after a period of corporate dominance. This paper is a case study of these broader dynamics. The Chicago Teachers Union, after a period of high strike activity, ceased striking for 25 years, until 2012. This paper asks how the union broke its pattern, resulting in a militant, visible, and widely-supported labor action. The CTU undertook this action despite the 75% threshold for a strike vote, making it of absolute necessity to build independent means for organizing members. The paper gains analytical leverage through the counterfactual comparison of the caucus that led the union through the strike - the Caucus of Rank and File Educators (CORE) - to a sister reform caucus Pro-Active Chicago Teachers (PACT). The latter caucus also won power in a contested union election on a reform program, but neither led a strike, nor lasted more than a term. Based on an extensive set of interviews with militants, rank-and-file teachers, city officials, and business representatives, along with analysis of archival and newspaper data, the paper finds that, despite many similarities between these groups, the changing political economic opportunity structure in the city, the systematic organization of members around the contract campaign, and the presence of a militant minority, were key to why the strike occurred in the one case and not the other. Classical theories of social identity formation rely on a dual process of self-identification and perceived categorization by the outgroup. Moreover, when it comes to minorities and stigmatized individuals compared to mainstream society members, there is evidence suggesting that the former face more external constraints in the process than the latter. However, little attention has been paid to the lived experiences of: a) feeling oneself being categorized by the out-group; and b) the negotiation of this perceived external identification with one's internal self-concept. This paper seeks to address this gap by exploring a specific frame that emerges in migrant narratives of life and acculturation in the destination country - the 'mainstream gaze' and its relation to othering. Findings suggest that though the role of the gaze may be interpreted differently across individuals (e.g. more or less malign) and may have different outcomes for the self-concept and group identity (e.g. reaffirming one's ethnic or national identity of origin or one's quest for 'authenticity'), the concept deserves more systematic attention in the study of minority-majority relations. The paper is also concerned with the role of the gaze in analytical studies of othering and the overall significance of visual cues in perceptions of inter-group communication. It focuses on the role of the gaze in its symbolic and physical dimensions as shaping processes of exclusion and marginalization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Researchers studying racial/ethnic inequality stress the importance of expanding beyond models of racism as residing within individuals. Instead, they highlight institutional racism as an important cause of racial/ethnic inequality. This paper examines organizations as one of the preeminent mechanisms of institutional racism. I explore how many organizations seem neutral to white people, and yet palpably charged with race -- and whiteness in particular -- to people of color. Drawing from scholarship on hegemonic whiteness (Lewis 2004), I develop and apply a whiteness perspective on organizations. Organizational whiteness does not refer to the organization's purpose, nor its demography. It is a dynamic and consequential organizational characteristic. I rely in part on Edwards' (2008) three dimensions of whiteness (white structural advantage, white normativity and white transparency) to build the model of organizational whiteness. Components of the model are based on an examination of the basic elements of organizations, including people, environment, and formal and informal structure (Scott & Davis 2007). I describe several of these components here. The paper ends with an outline of remaining questions, including whether whiteness truly resides in individual organizations or perhaps at the level of organizational forms, whether there are multiple forms of (intersectional) whiteness, and most importantly, whether there is possibility for change in organizations suffused with whiteness. Building on a tradition of empirical investigations of medical uncertainty, we consider how terminally-ill patients experience uncertainty in relation to experimental medications and clinical trials. While previous studies of medical uncertainty focus on issues of diagnosis, screening, and initial treatment, our paper demonstrates how uncertainty is a feature of medical encounters throughout the illness trajectory and across the life course by emphasizing the salience of uncertainty in regard to the treatment of terminal patients. This paper argues that a major source of uncertainty for terminally ill patients is found in clinical trial medications. Here, individuals confront the choice between transitioning to palliative care or volunteering for an experimental/trial medication that might stave off death. Additionally, patients also have to consider how such experimental treatments might impact their quality-of-life, regardless of whether or not they are efficacious. In this paper, we focus on individuals with terminal nonsmall cell lung cancer, which is an aggressive and difficult to treat form of cancer. We argue that three aspects of clinical trials create uncertainty in the care of terminally-ill patients: 1) discussions about the efficacy of clinical trials; 2) the physical consequences of clinical trials; and, 3) the impact clinical trials have on patient's prognostic understanding. Despite encountering high prognostic certainty (i.e., they have a fatal cancer), these patients nonetheless encounter considerable uncertainty in relation to their participation in clinical trials. Gay men experience a different level of brotherhood in a social fraternity than their straight counterparts. This paper will answer: In what ways do the experiences of two Gay men in a social fraternity display aspects of inequality? Theories behind this question have been researched by sociologists, psychologists, and anthropologists, yet few have taken the time to really create an intimate experience with theory and testimony from the men being studied. In the exploration of this broader question, the paper breaks down some of the the subtle and explicit ways greek life made two gay men feel like outsiders within their community and how the institution maintains fraternities as a heteronormative space. This paper pulls from an epistemology of queer theory, and previous research of masculinity, sexuality, homophobia, as well as power to show the theory behind testimony. Interviews and a brief survey present important data on the specific colleges situation surrounding gay fraternity men. In recent decades, corporate profits have risen while household incomes for the vast majority of Americans have stagnated. In this paper, I document a trend that offers a new way of making sense of this paradox of "profits without prosperity" (Lazonick 2014): while profits have risen on average, the variability of these profits has also risen, such that firms have also become more likely to fail to turn a profit. Firms with negative income are likely to take drastic cost-cutting measures like laying off workers or freezing wage increases, and hence this trend of rising losses has likely made American workers more economically insecure. Yet this increase in losses has received little scholarly attention. I begin to fill this gap by examining losses the 316 largest U.S. firms since the 1950s. Losses began to rise at these firms during the 1970s, and while the initial surge in losses was relatively widespread, since 2000 the largest and most successful firms became increasingly insulated from losses. In the second part of the paper, I investigate two potential explanations for this rise in losses: falling rates of operating profits and rising levels of corporate debt. Using regression analyses, I find evidence that both declining operating profit rates and rising debt help explain a portion of the increase in losses, but rising debt seems to be a stronger explanatory factor. This suggests rising corporate debt has hurt the ability of large firms to consistently generate a profit, contributing to economic instability and worker insecurity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

U.S. schools continue to define and manage student discipline through a paradigm of crime and punishment. Widely implemented since the early 1990s, the use of zero-tolerance policies as a means of ensuring school safety services is not a new phenomenon. Most theoretical explanations, fail to situate school criminalization, hyper-vigilance, and victimization of students of color within a broader structural context that places racial dynamics at the forefront, ultimately failing to fully explain the implications of these disciplinary policies on the safety of students of color within schools. In this paper, I build a Critical Race Theory (CRT) of fear and safety the undergirds the how we think about linkages between courts, schools, and racialized safety. This paper builds on sociology of punishment and race theory literature to develop of a more critical understanding of how zero-tolerance policies further racialize and unequally distribute safety. As such, I argue that in-school disciplinary policies reproduce racialized notions of safety and as such, create and reinforce racialized constructions of safety that function to legitimize surveillance and policing of students of color within public schools. I argue that these policies, though often implemented under the guise of protecting the safety of students and staff within schools, play a pivotal role in legitimizing the surveillance and policing of youth of color and facilitate whites' tendency to link danger and violence to youth of color. In doing so, I demonstrate how in-school disciplinary policies reproduce racialized notions of safety and create consensus on the appropriateness of their use and promote and legitimize greater punishment of students of color. Metaphors are absolutely essential to sociologists' work. Following conceptual metaphor theory (CMT), all human action and cognition is shaped by conceptual metaphors, and this is especially true for the abstract concepts that are influenced by the metaphorical mapping of a nonsociological domain onto the sociological domain. Following poetic metaphor theory (PMT), science itself is irreducibly metaphorical--dependent upon maintaining the tension between empirical reality and the disciplinary apparatus of sociology. Combining CMT and PMT, we see that sociology is doubly metaphorical and also prone to a doublemythology that results when the metaphorical nature of our work is forgotten. This paper takes up Brown's (1976) call to develop a "poetics of sociological knowledge" for the purpose of maintaining the vitality of sociological science. After developing a functionalist typology of metaphors in the discipline, the paper describes four possible outcomes of metaphor use in our disciplinary practices. It concludes by proposing a list of "rules of the poetic sociological method" that sociologists should follow to ensure that the metaphorical tension upon which our disciplinary activity depends is not lost. This paper considers the contribution of French philosopher and Trotskyist militant Daniel Bensaïd in constructing a "strategic" Marxism. Against the backdrop of the 1980s/1990s "dark defeat" of the socialist project - thanks to neoliberal globalization and the collapse of actually-existing socialism - Bensaïd argued for a "return of strategy" and a move away from the Negri/Holloway "utopian moment" of the Global Justice movement. In arguing against the "social illusion" of social movements, Bensaïd pushed for a new Marxist politics rooted in the Leninist specificity of the political field. The paper situates Bensaïd politically, as a leader of both the Ligue Communiste Révolutionnaire and the Fourth International, and it is argued that compared to many of his contemporaries he was well placed to see the crisis in the socialist project. The paper outlines the different dimensions of Bensaïd's strategic Marxism, focusing on how his rereading of Marx led to a new focus on politics, history, time, and space. The rise of the gig-economy in the last decade has caused a furor of public interest and debate. The argument centers on whether this phenomena is positive for workers and society. From an employment and labor standpoint the key component of the gig-economy is that companies operating in this space claim that they have no employees and that those who use their app to work are instead independent contractors. This paper places this debate in the context of the wider urban sphere. The disavowal of an employment relationship is not only a challenge to urban labor markets but also presents a massive challenge to our urban regulatory regimes. Adopting the gig economy's legal claims and promises at face value represents an ideological shift in the responsibility cities have historically taken for the maintenance of their urban infrastructure, both physical and social, and serves to further privatize a city's social political economy. To evaluate the impact of the gig-economy on cities themselves this paper evaluates how cities have responded to the advent of gig-employment, particularly transportation network companies (TNCs), such as Uber and Lyft. Through a combination of original data, reevaluation of previous studies' data, and government data this study provides a detailed analysis of the predictors of urban response to the arrival of TNCs in the largest U.S. cities. This analysis is conducted through detailed descriptive statistics and an ordered logit regression analysis of urban regulatory responses to the gig-economy. This study finds that cities have largely abdicated their responsibilities, engaging in passive privatization, especially in California where these companies are based. Where cities have attempted to regulate the gig-economy this study finds that it is larger cities, cities with stricter existing regulation, and cities where the gig-economy came later that took the strongest response. Finally, this paper ends with a discussion of how workers and unions are fighting back against the gig-economy's passive urban privatization of municipal transit systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immigrant status and visa type represent an important yet understudied dimension of inequality among immigrants with consequences on the lived experiences and outcomes of immigrants and their families. Further, assumptions about gender and family are entrenched in the US immigration system in ways that reflect and reinforce gendered roles. This paper seeks to further our understanding of these effects by focusing on spouses of international students who are considered to be "dependents" within the US visa system and face severe restrictions on their ability to work outside the home. This policy enforces a "forced time out", and this paper seeks to explore its consequences on the gendered division of household labor within immigrant families and their overall economic and social wellbeing. Using qualitative data collected through interviews with immigrant couples, comprised of international students (on F1 visa status) and their "dependent" partners (on F2 visa status), this study seeks to identify the intended and unintended consequences of the dependent spouse visa status on the division of household labor and broader consequences on the social and economic wellbeing and integration of immigrant families. This paper examines six different scenes or ethnographic snapshots of Detroit, all dealing with questions of redevelopment, based on ethnographic interviews and participant observation, through the lens of trauma and reparations. The larger goal of the paper is twofold: 1) to expand the discussion of trauma to include not just individuals and communities, but social spaces at the sub-neighborhood level; and 2) to broaden development discussions to include consideration of the cumulative and immediate effects of localized trauma within such spaces. These scenes are all drawn from research conducted on the East Side of Detroit in the years following the Great Recession, leading up to and following the subsequent municipal bankruptcy, a time where Detroit has been increasingly discussed in terms of its rebirth or redevelopment as opposed to its death or decline. As these examples show, such portrayals rely often rely on an implicit erasure of a troubled past, one that is also loaded with trauma of various kinds. In each of these scenes, we examine how this trauma emerges and asserts itself, demanding recognition and acknowledgment of the wrongs of the past, most especially those related to race. I also use these examples to help point us in the direction of redevelopment strategies that are not only trauma-informed, but consciously reparative. Trauma study reveals a previously uncharted world to the observer and thus in a tragic way creates an opportunity to see what would otherwise be deeply hidden. This paper investigates whether social capital benefit different groups of immigrants of various religious background equally in France. Discrimination against Muslim in France can be traced back to late 1870s, and they manifest in the present day as barriers to formal access to employment. This paper tests whether the informal channels to employment, such as using one's social capital, are also blocked for Muslims. I compare immigrant groups in France with different self-reported religions using the French "Trajectories and Origins" survey (2009). The findings show that Muslims do indeed differ from the other groups in terms of using their social capital for various aspects of employment such as likelihood of getting a promotion and annual earnings. Breaking with the Cartesian tradition of philosophy of the mind, and in reaction to the nascent field of psychology, Husserl (1912) theorised that the body is not distinct from the mind or awareness. This has the implication that felt sensation may also be constituted in embodied public ways. In lieu of theorizing, this paper respecifies the problem of whether the mind and body are distinct, or not, as a member's concern. In line with the research tradition of Discursive Psychology this paper uses data from 'technique coaching' interactions in the sports of powerlifting and Nordic Skiing in order to explore how it is that participants construct the mind and body as either distinct or part of a singular whole. Specifically, this paper explores situations in which coaches and athletes alike take it as unproblematic that a coach might know how an athlete is feeling in their body, their kinesthetic sensation. Coaches routinely make epistemic claims that an athlete is well rested, or that their central nervous system is firing well, with only athletic movements as a basis for their claim. These situations are then contrasted with situations in which coaches act as if they do not know how an athlete is feeling. Coaches can on some occasions make 'feel-inquiries', that is ask how some movement felt. I argue that these do not reflect a lack of understanding or access to the athletes feelings, but are instead a strategic resource used to upgrade the athlete's participation in the coaching feedback process. This paper argues that participants use the organization of epistemic rights enacted in knowing an athlete's interior kinaesthetic sensation versus rights arranged in 'feel inquiries' as resources for modulating the athlete's participation in the work of coaching. This paper reports findings from a qualitative investigation of subjective aging across gender and sexual identities. Scholars have recently turned their attention to the aging experiences of sexual minorities however, their research often focuses on health, social support, and income. Drawing on 40 in-depth interviews with middle-age individuals of various gender and sexual identities, I analyze differences in how interviewees perceive aging--for example, their aging anxieties, attitudes about later life, age identities, and perceptions of life course stage timing. Although perceptions of aging are strong predictors of our health and well-being, they have received little research attention, particularly focusing on variation by gender and sexuality. Further, this study also examines how gender and sexual identity influence individual's strategies for coping with aging anxiety. The recent influx of Syrian refugees into Canada over the past few years has encouraged scholars to analyze the integration process of this population into the host society as well as the different challenges that they may face. Women with children, in particular, have been the focus of many studies since they constitute the largest proportion of displaced people. Scholars have focused significant attention on the geographical aspect of forced migration, and the consequences of refugees' movement across space. However, they have not addressed the idea of the "future" for refugee populations who are forced to settle and to build a new life in a new country. In this paper, I attempt to connect scholarship on forced migration and cultural concepts of the future in order to examine the temporal dimensions of forced migration. Using semi-structured interviews with 41 Syrian mothers who have recently arrived in Canada, this paper investigates refugee mothers' conceptualization of their (and their children's) future in Canada. More precisely, I argue that forced migration and the status of "refugeeness" heavily shape newcomers' perception of time in general, and of the future in particular. I find that mothers deliberately "foreclose" their own timeline in order to focus on their children's future in Canada. Moreover, a sense of "scrambled timeline" is emergent: mothers cannot separate their future projections from the present nor from the past. The incredible historical persistence of universities, and university hierarchies, requires special attention from researchers interested in organizations. Essential to this persistence is the ability to adapt and rearticulate usefulness in an ever changing political economy. While significant scholarship has been dedicated to the re-articulation of the university as an engine of economic development stemming from the connection between research, patents, and produces, much less attention has been paid how traditional universities have reimagined the teaching function at the core of their mission. Leveraging primary and secondary historical documents as well as original interviews with administrators responsible for strategic educational initiatives at three elite campus' - Stanford, Harvard, and MIT - this paper evaluates how each organization managed pedagogical experimentation designed to broaden the traditional concept of the student. By focusing on an historical analysis of the roots of educational experimentation at three elite universities most closely associated with a recent spasm of pedagogical experimentation (the MOOC movement) this paper points to the tension between simultaneous legitimation projects, many of which are abound by local conditions and organizational histories. This paper shows how the cultural conditions created at Stanford for pedagogical experimentation using distance education were defined by porous bounders between industry and university curriculum. These conditions were seized upon by local entrepreneurs. In Cambridge, local social conflicts and strong history of corporate action lead to different strategies, pursued primarily due to the ascent of computer scientists within academic hierarchies. This paper examines the transnational travel and competition of two feminist concepts: femicidio and feminicidio. The former is Spanish translation of the term "femicide," defined by Diana Russell as "the killing of females by males because they are female." Feminicidio is an adaptation of "femicide" that Mexican feminist scholars developed in their analyses of the killings of women in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Feminicidio introduces a focus on the complicity of the state in the killing of women by sustaining structural gender and class inequalities at the root of this violence and tolerating its impunity. Feminicidio also became a frame of a transnational feminist movement that began in Mexico, although the use of femicidio versus feminicidio has been hotly debated among feminist activists and scholars. The paper aims to (1) trace the transfer and transformation of "femicide" from its origins in the American academia to Latin America in relation to transnational feminist activism; (2) analyze the relationship between differently positioned feminist experts and their interventions in the UN and regional human rights systems; (3) examine the (potential) impact of the adoption of these competing concepts on feminist policy on violence against women in different national settings. The paper expands the literature on the transnational diffusion of ideas and institutions by examining how the politics behind the production of feminist knowledge shape the processes through which meaning is contested and negotiated as it is transferred to and from different organizational domains in multiple directions and across different scales. Drawing from a case study of insurance denials for genetic testing, this paper considers how the integration of Bourdieausian concepts into fundamental cause theory can increase the theory's utility in health disparities research. In the past 10 years significant advancements have been made in developing precision medicine technology that aims to improve population health by providing tools that will better predict, diagnose, treat, and monitor disease on an individual basis. Most patients in the U.S. who might benefit from this new medically technology depend on their health insurance, but health insurance payers have been slow in revising their coverage policies to permit insurance coverage. As a result, many individuals seeking health insurance coverage genetic testing, may instead receive an insurance denial for their claim. Fortunately for some, an insurance claims denial is not always mean a dead-end for patients seeking financial assistance to cover the high price tag of new medical technology. By drawing interviews with women diagnosed with breast cancer (N=24), this paper illustrates how, despite a health insurance denial for genetic testing, individuals may rely on non-material forms of capital to successfully overcome insurance constraints to this diagnostic technology. This analysis uses Bourdieu's capital theory to consider how an individual's social, cultural, and economic capital dynamically interacts with the structures of the healthcare system to grant access to new medical technology. In doing so, we gain a novel perspective on the multidimensionality of socioeconomic status (SES) and advance our appreciation for the fundamental and durable relationship between SES and health. This paper critically interrogates the role of authoritarianism in the 2012 United States Presidential Election. While recent studies have demonstrated the importance of authoritarianism with respect to the 2016 election, much less is known about if, and how, authoritarianism affected the 2012 election. Beyond simply asking if authoritarianism matters, there is a strong focus throughout this paper on exactly what dimension of authoritarianism matters, and how it matters. Using data from the American National Election Survey, a series of ordinary least squares and logistic regressions are conducted for white respondents. There is not one unifying definition of youth homelessness in the United States. Rather, homeless youth are included in three separate federal definitions. Youth who sleep in hotels and motels are included in these definitions depending on whether or not they are enrolled in school, their age, and how long they are able to stay. Despite federal acknowledgement, motel residents are not counted in the annual Point in Time counts in most major cities and are largely excluded from literature on homeless youth, leaving a dearth of information on their unique experiences. In addition, little is known about the needs of motel youth and how they might differ from youth staying in other temporary accommodations, especially those recognized by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This paper takes the first steps to assess if homeless youth who sleep in motels vary in any major ways from youth who reported a different sleeping location on the previous night in a 2015 survey. Findings show statistically significant relationships between one's sleeping location and income, the presence of a substance use disorder, contact with homeless service providers, and age. The results of this paper imply that there might be important differences between homeless youth who reside in motels and those who reside in other locations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper I contribute to both the sociology of violence and the sociology of animals through a comparative analysis of two U.S. government killing programs: a shadow airwar conducted as part of the "War on Terrorism" overseas and a program undertaken to kill predatory and "nuisance" animals at home. Throughout the paper, I describe the necropolitics through which both programs are sustained. First, both U.S. government killing programs operate in "states of exception," in which it is presumed that widely shared normative prohibitions on killing humans and wildlife do not apply. And both programs utilize a humanitized violence, and are both accompanied by a humanitizing discourse, in order to create the impression that this killing is undertaken in a humane and moral way. Finally, these programs share similarities in political economy, in which organizational and economic logics drive the U.S. government to continue both, while imposing few political or economic costs for doing so.
