To discuss person-centred care in nursing education and the role of online pedagogy to facilitate meaninful learning. The core principles and values of person-centred care are at the centre of national and international healthcare education. Person-centred care recognises partnerships and relationships between nurses, healthcare practitioners and individual patients, carers and their families and part of the training of healthcare professionals. However, the literature on how person-centred care is taught to facilitate meaningful learning in nursing education particularly in the context of online pedagogy is limited. A critical discussion paper. A critical discussion of person-centred care and online pedagogy that can facilitate teaching practices are presented, drawing on authors' positionality and case exemplars. Teaching person-centred care using online pedagogy appears to have a promising impact on undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students' experiences. Engaging students in critical examination and reflection on the complexities of person-centred care in practice creates meaningful experiential learning for both students and educators. Evidence suggests that the use of online pedagogy is a beneficial and effective way to incorporate the teaching of person-centred care into nursing education, yet more evidence is needed to evaluate its impact on nursing practice. The aim of this study is to present the possibilities of nurse education in the use of the Chat Generative Pre-training Transformer (ChatGPT) tool to support the documentation process. The success of the nursing process is based on the accuracy of nursing diagnoses, which also determine nursing interventions and nursing outcomes. Educating nurses in the use of artificial intelligence in the nursing process can significantly reduce the time nurses spend on documentation. Discussion paper. We used a case study from Train4Health in the field of preventive care to demonstrate the potential of using Generative Pre-training Transformer (ChatGPT) to educate nurses in documenting the nursing process using generative artificial intelligence. Based on the case study, we entered a description of the patient's condition into Generative Pre-training Transformer (ChatGPT) and asked questions about nursing diagnoses, nursing interventions and nursing outcomes. We further synthesized these results. In the process of educating nurses about the nursing process and nursing diagnosis, Generative Pre-training Transformer (ChatGPT) can present potential patient problems to nurses and guide them through the process from taking a medical history, setting nursing diagnoses and planning goals and interventions. Generative Pre-training Transformer (ChatGPT) returned appropriate nursing diagnoses, but these were not in line with the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association – International (NANDA-I) classification as requested. Of all the nursing diagnoses provided, only one was consistent with the most recent version of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association – International (NANDA-I). Generative Pre-training Transformer (ChatGPT) is still not specific enough for nursing diagnoses, resulting in incorrect answers in several cases. Using Generative Pre-training Transformer (ChatGPT) to educate nurses and support the documentation process is time-efficient, but it still requires a certain level of human critical-thinking and fact-checking. Empathy development is an integral aspect of nurse education in several countries. Empathy supports person-centred care provision by aiding effective communication and promoting feelings of wellbeing by helping people feel understood. The development of empathy in nursing students is best facilitated through experiential learning and reflective practice, although to date, there are no reflective models specifically designed for this purpose. It is the aim of this paper to present a model designed to promote reflection on the development of empathy. The authors have developed an approach to empathic reflection based on the philosophy of Edith Stein. In this paper we outline the Empathic Reflection model which emphasises the need for educator support and an appreciative approach. We then present a narrative example of the model in action in an acute care setting. We have developed a three-stage model to support experiential learning about the development of empathy for nursing students. This discussion paper explores an interesting area for future nursing research about empathy development through experiential learning and reflective practice. Educators can contribute to the promotion of empathy by working in partnership with students to explore previously held beliefs which might act as barriers to empathic care provision. The aim is to present outcome and engagement data from the initial years of the implementation of a new teaching approach in entry to practice nursing and midwifery education. The Block Model (TBM) is a teaching approach that involves studying one unit of study at a time over a four-week period, as opposed to the traditional semester model. This paper presents data revealing the impact of TBM on student engagement and overall experience in entry to practice Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery programs. The evaluation retrospectively compared key indicators pre- Block Model implementation with outcomes for nursing and midwifery students using TBM approach using standard data sets and external comparators such as the Student Experience Survey and National Employability Survey. The study presents a comparative analysis of key indicators and graduate outcomes for students. We use reportable data and two external comparators, the Student Experience Survey and the National Employability Survey, to gauge student learning and graduate employability. The evaluation was conducted in a tertiary institution in Australia with for nursing and midwifery students who completed their studies using TBM approach at the university. The implementation of TBM in nursing and midwifery programs resulted in improvements in learner engagement, retention rates and pass rates. Improvements were also noted graduate outcomes, with an increase in full-time graduate employment. The results suggest the Block Model is a promising new teaching approach in nursing and midwifery education, with potential benefits for learner engagement, retention and pass rates. To describe the development and evaluation of a novel virtual practice placement. Health systems around the world face the challenge of recruiting and retaining sufficient nursing staff to provide high quality care. The need to train more nurses makes it hard to provide sufficient and varied high quality student placements to all students. This paper reports the result of one approach to the provision of a novel virtual placement for pre-registration student nurses. Online virtual placement evaluated by a questionnaire conducted after the placement. A total of 195 students attended the virtual practice placement between 10th October 2022 and the 10th March 2023. The survey consisted of eight questions, of which one invited a qualitative response. A total of 188 students completed the questionnaire and provided feedback. Of these 84 were adult nursing students, 67 child, 36 mental health and one learning disability student. The virtual placement required considerable resources to run, however was deemed as valuable by most students. When asked to rate the overall experience out of 5, the median scores were consistently high: adult (Mdn=5), child (Mdn=4), learning disability (Mdn=5) and mental health (Mdn=5) and mean values consistently high across fields: adult (M=4.73), child (M=5), learning disability (M=5) and mental health (M=4.67). Qualitatively, there were four main themes that emerged from the questionnaire responses: increased understanding of community healthcare and holistic approaches to care; developing interpersonal skills; a positive impact on their future career opportunities and the value of realistic case studies. Virtual placements are a viable addition to traditional placements. However, they require careful planning and considerable resources including experienced and dedicated facilitators. Evaluate interventions to prepare preceptors for their role in undergraduate health student clinical education. Preceptor training and development are crucial to quality clinical learning experiences for undergraduate health students. The efficacy of education interventions designed for preceptors and use of reliable, valid outcome measures are unclear. A systematic literature review informed by PRISMA Guidelines. Major databases CINAHL, Medline and Google Scholar were searched between January 2010 and November 2021. 1253 articles were initially retrieved. Removal of duplicates and screening by title, abstract and keywords yielded 156 papers. Twenty-one papers fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were assessed using an adapted 'Critical Appraisal Checklist for Reports of Educational Interventions' and the New World Kirkpatrick Model. Most interventions were developed for the nursing profession and evaluated using pre-post-test (86%) or post-test only (5%). Two studies were considered high quality. Most studies (81%) reported positive short-term impact on preceptor knowledge, skills, attitudes and confidence. Two thirds (62%) of included studies measured preceptor behaviour change. No study measured impact related to quality of health care. Small sample sizes limited inferential analyses. Psychometric testing of tools to measure preceptor outcomes was inconsistent and validity and reliability were not reported in most studies. Structure and content of interventions were diverse and lacked rigour in outcome measurement. Most interventions demonstrated some positive impact on preceptor development. Objective measures determining longer term impact or how enhanced preceptor development translated into quality clinical student learning support was lacking. The aim of this scoping review is to summarize and critically evaluate research focused on nursing bridging education programs internationally. Specifically, this review addresses bridging from a: (1) Personal Support Worker (or similar) to a Registered Practical Nurse (or similar); and (2) Registered Practical Nurse (or similar) to a Registered Nurse. Nursing bridging education programs support learners to move from one level of educational preparation or practice to another. These programs can therefore increase nursing workforce capacity. Global healthcare systems have faced nursing shortages for decades. Moreover, the presently insufficient nursing workforce is confronting an ever-increasing volume of needed healthcare that is rising with the global ageing demographic shift. The Joanna Briggs Institute methods for scoping reviews, combined with Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) guidelines, were used with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). MEDLINE (Ovid), CINAHL, EMBASE and SCOPUS databases were searched. Articles published in English that included Personal Support Workers, Registered Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses and/or nurses in similar categories who were studied through the process of a nursing bridging education program were included in the review. The study search was limited to papers published after 2005 (i.e., the beginning of nurse workload "overload" according to the Canadian Nurses Association). Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis was used in a content analysis of the included studies. A total of 15 articles published between 2005 and 2022 were included. Four themes were generated: (1) participating in bridging education programs fuels both professional and personal development; (2) nursing bridging education programs enhance diversity in the nursing workforce; (3) student nurses do not anticipate the challenges associated with participating in a bridging program; and (4) mentor-mentee connection promotes academic learning and successful completion of nursing bridging education programs. Despite experiencing challenges, participation in/completion of nursing bridging education programs leads to successful role transitioning and self-reported fulfillment of personal and professional aspirations. This review revealed the need for bridging programs to accommodate the unique needs of student nurses. Incorporation of support services, mentorship and faculty familiarity with varying nursing educational backgrounds facilitates role transitions by reducing the perceived challenges of bridging and promoting connection to foster learning. To examine the literature on intergenerational learning between older people and student nurses. Intergenerational activities offer opportunities for intergenerational learning and help reduce ageism. There are several older person/school children intergenerational learning initiatives. However, there is less known about how intergenerational learning occurs in nurse education programmes outside of service provision. Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) integrative review framework was used to guide the review process. Population, intervention, context and outcome (PICO) was used to develop the review question, search strategy and inclusion/exclusion criteria. Database (CINAHL, Cochrane library, Medline, PubMed, Scopus and PsychInfo) searches and hand searching occurred from 2012 to 2023. Screening, appraisal and data extraction was undertaken according to Prisma guidelines. Nine papers were included (North American (n = 5), Canadian (n = 1) Chinese (n = 2), Taiwanese (n = 1)). Mixed methods designs were included. Four themes were identified: 1) Seeing beyond first glance; 2) Connecting and getting to know each other; 3) Learning together; and 4) Challenges for intergenerational learning. This review demonstrates the relevance of intergenerational learning in nurse education and highlights the importance of embedding initiatives which will promote and support mutual learning. Innovative intergenerational initiatives enable students to explore their underlying attitudes and views in a way that they may not be able to in the more traditional service and care giving learning situations. Mental health and psychosocial concerns such as domestic violence in pregnancy and after birth are significant issues. Maternal health, social and environmental contexts have a direct influence on child development and long-term health. However, midwives, nurses and other health professionals lack confidence and skills in assessing, supporting and referring women with perinatal psychosocial concerns. The aim of the scoping review is to review educational innovations and teaching strategies used to build skills and knowledge in health professionals and students to address psychosocial concerns including perinatal mental health, domestic violence and drug and alcohol misuse. A scoping review was undertaken to help identify the breadth of papers reporting educational innovations and strategies particularly to address psychosocial concerns. Four databases CINAHL, PsychoInfo, PubMed, OvidMedline and the grey literature were searched using a diverse range of terms for papers published in English between January 2009 and December 2020. This yielded 2509 papers and after review, 34 papers were included in the scoping review. The 34 papers in this review found a diversity of educational initiatives and strategies delivered either face-to-face, online or in a blended mode addressing the learning needs of health professionals working with women with complex psychosocial concerns. The following characteristics in the papers were examined; focus of education, design and development, length, target audience including interprofessional focus, self-care, sensitive topics, debriefing, involving lived experience consumers and evaluation measures. In the studies indicated that they benefited from hearing about the individuals' lived experiences, opportunities for simulated practice and valued interprofessional learning experiences for both content and teamwork. The emergence of virtual modes offered some innovative and engaging ways to create a safe space for psychosocial education. However, the research does not provide guidance as to the best mode of delivery or length of program This scoping review provides a broad overview of innovative and diverse educational methods and strategies being used in the nursing, midwifery and health disciplines to engage students and practitioners in learning in the areas of perinatal mental health and psychosocial care. Involvement of lived experience consumers in the design and delivery of education programs can positively impact learners' knowledge and understandings of sensitive psychosocial topics. The aim of this integrative review is to explore how formative online multiple-choice tests used in nurse education promote self-regulated learning and report on pedagogies that support their design. Online multiple-choice tests are widely used as learning and formative assessment tools in a range of educational contexts. However, little is known about how these tools are used to promote patterns of learner self-regulation. It is important that nurses and nursing students develop the capability to self-regulate learning to be effective lifelong learners and navigate complex and unfamiliar practice environments. A five-stage approach guided this integrative review: problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis and presentation. A systematic search of ERIC, Web of Science, Ovid Medline, Scopus, PubMed, Embase and CINAHL was conducted in February 2021. Seventeen peer-reviewed papers were identified that discussed formative online multiple-choice tests in nurse education. Purposive sampling and ancestry searching identified an additional paper. Articles were analysed and sorted into themes of outcomes (presented as components of self-regulated learning theory) and pedagogy. Formative online multiple-choice tests are used with good effect in nurse education as measured by knowledge gain and exam performance, increased confidence and learner satisfaction. There was no literature that explored metacognitive outcomes and minimal literature considered behavioural outcomes. Pedagogy supporting the implementation of multiple-choice tests was lacking in most articles. Formative online multiple-choice tests are widely used with good effect in nurse education. However, opportunities for further research on how these tools can encourage metacognition and self-regulatory behaviours is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This scoping review aims to review contemporary published literature on Nursing Informatics education in undergraduate nursing education. Nursing is the largest workforce in health care and nurses are increasingly required to work with digital information systems. The need for nurses to understand and embrace information technology is closely linked with the ability to function in the contemporary healthcare workplace. However, despite the early adoption of Nursing Informatics in Australia in the 1980 s, there remain barriers to Nursing Informatics engagement and proficiency, including poor computer literacy, limited professional development and a lack of undergraduate informatics education. This scoping review will be developed in adherence with the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis: Scoping Reviews and the PRISMA-ScR Checklist. To be included in this scoping review, papers need to include Nursing Informatics education for undergraduate nursing students in a Bachelor of Nursing program. Undergraduate nursing students are defined as individuals enrolled in a recognised nursing program leading to registration as a Nurse. To meet the requirements for registration as a Registered Nurse, in Australia, individuals are required to complete a Bachelor of Nursing program at a university (Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7) For the purpose of this scoping review, undergraduate nursing students are defined as those individuals undertaking a three year Bachelor of Nursing program at a university. Equivalent international definitions will be also used in the scoping review procedure. Sources of information will be included if they were published between 2015 and 2022 and describe curriculum recommendations (including barriers to implementing Nursing Informatics education). The purpose of the identified timespan is to reflect the rapidly evolving nature of health informatics and digital technologies. The requirement for curriculum recommendations is to reflect the purpose of the scoping review as the basis for a Delphi study, where Nursing Informatics and its integration into Bachelor of Nursing curricula will be explored and described in collaboration with domain experts. To consider the future of nurse education and the merits of a university-based course versus vocational training. In the 1990s nurse training in the United Kingdom moved from an apprenticeship model to a university-based education. At about the same time, the two-tier structure of registered and enrolled nurses was abandoned, leading to an all-graduate profession. Opinion paper Leave blank. Nursing is primarily a humanistic endeavour, requiring interpersonal as well as academic knowledge and technical skills. We argue that the move into universities has not served recruits (and patients) as well as intended. Students today are financially worse off than their predecessors, have fewer practice opportunities, and often lack the sense of belonging that existed when training was hospital-based. The academic environment is a deterrent to some who cannot afford fees or who would struggle to attain a university degree. Branch-specific courses have produced an inflexible workforce. The move from practice to universities was a bold approach, but it has failed. We urge a revised apprenticeship model, with university input and generic training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
