Catalonia is a triangular region in northeastern Spain. It consists of the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. Its population is about 7.7 million, and its capital and most populous city is Barcelona, which is located in the province of Barcelona. Catalonia is one of the wealthiest and most regions in Spain. Because of this, it is an important part of Spain's economy. The region has been fighting for autonomy since its establishment, pushing to become independent of Spain for centuries. Catalonia received autonomy several times throughout the years under different rulers. Although the region is self-governing and has its own language and distinct culture, the move toward independence continues. The Spanish government is against the move, however.
