We exploit the deep resolved Halpha kinematic data from the KMOS^3D and SINS/zC-SINF surveys to examine the largely unexplored outer disk kinematics of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) out to the peak of cosmic star formation. Our sample contains 101 SFGs representative of the more massive (9.3 < log(M*/Msun) < 11.5) main sequence population at 0.6~0.05) in combination with a sizeable level of pressure support in the outer disk. These findings are in agreement with recent studies demonstrating that star-forming disks at high redshift are strongly baryon dominated within the disk scale, and furthermore suggest that pressure gradients caused by large turbulent gas motions are present even in their outer disks. We demonstrate that these results are largely independent of our model assumptions such as the presence of a central stellar bulge, the effect of adiabatic contraction at fixed m_d, and variations in the concentration parameter., Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

We present the KMOS^3D survey, a new integral field survey of over 600 galaxies at 0.71$, implying that the star-forming 'main sequence' (MS) is primarily composed of rotating galaxies at both redshift regimes. When considering additional stricter criteria, the Halpha kinematic maps indicate at least ~70% of the resolved galaxies are disk-like systems. Our high-quality KMOS data confirm the elevated velocity dispersions reported in previous IFS studies at z>0.7. For rotation-dominated disks, the average intrinsic velocity dispersion decreases by a factor of two from 50 km/s at z~2.3 to 25 km/s at z~0.9 while the rotational velocities at the two redshifts are comparable. Combined with existing results spanning z~0-3, disk velocity dispersions follow an approximate (1+z) evolution that is consistent with the dependence of velocity dispersion on gas fractions predicted by marginally-stable disk theory., 20 pages, 11 figures, 1 Appendix; Accepted to ApJ November 25

Lyman-Break Galaxy (LBG) samples observed during reionization ($z\gtrsim6$) with Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 are reaching sizes sufficient to characterize their clustering properties. Using a combined catalog from the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field and CANDELS surveys, containing $N=743$ LBG candidates at z>6.5 at a mean redshift of $z=7.2$, we detect a clear clustering signal in the angular correlation function (ACF) at $\sim4��$, corresponding to a real-space correlation length $r_{0}=6.7^{+0.9}_{-1.0}h^{-1}$cMpc. The derived galaxy bias $b=8.6^{+0.9}_{-1.0}$ is that of dark-matter halos of $M=10^{11.1^{+0.2}_{-0.3}}$M$_{\odot}$ at $z=7.2$, and highlights that galaxies below the current detection limit ($M_{AB}\sim-17.7$) are expected in lower-mass halos ($M\sim10^{8}-10^{10.5}$M$_{\odot}$). We compute the ACF of LBGs at $z\sim3.8-z\sim5.9$ in the same surveys. A trend of increasing bias is found from $z=3.8$ ($b\sim3.0$) to $z=7.2$ ($b\sim8.6$), broadly consistent with galaxies at fixed luminosity being hosted in dark-matter halos of similar mass at $4, 7 pages, 2 tables, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We search for z~10 galaxies over ~160 arcmin^2 of WFC3/IR data in the Chandra Deep Field South, using the public HUDF09, ERS, and CANDELS surveys, that reach to 5sigma depths ranging from 26.9 to 29.4 in H_160 AB mag. z>~9.5 galaxy candidates are identified via J_125-H_160>1.2 colors and non-detections in any band blueward of J_125. Spitzer IRAC photometry is key for separating the genuine high-z candidates from intermediate redshift (z~2-4) galaxies with evolved or heavily dust obscured stellar populations. After removing 16 sources of intermediate brightness (H_160~24-26 mag) with strong IRAC detections, we only find one plausible z~10 galaxy candidate in the whole data set, previously reported in Bouwens et al. (2011). The newer data cover a 3x larger area and provide much stronger constraints on the evolution of the UV luminosity function (LF). If the evolution of the z~4-8 LFs is extrapolated to z~10, six z~10 galaxies are expected in our data. The detection of only one source suggests that the UV LF evolves at an accelerated rate before z~8. The luminosity density is found to increase by more than an order of magnitude in only 170 Myr from z~10 to z~8. This increase is >=4x larger than expected from the lower redshift extrapolation of the UV LF. We are thus likely witnessing the first rapid build-up of galaxies in the heart of cosmic reionization. We present UV luminosity functions (LFs) at 1500 Angstrom derived from the HST Early Release Science WFC3/UVIS data acquired over ~50 arcmin^2 of the GOODS-South field. The LFs are determined over the entire redshift range z=0.75-2.5 using two methods, similar to those used at higher redshifts for Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs): (1) 13-band UV+optical+NIR photometric redshifts to study galaxies in the range z=0.5-2 in three bins of dz=0.5, and (2) dropout samples in three redshift windows centered at z~1.5, z~1.9, and z~2.5. The characteristic luminosity dims by ~1.5 mag from z=2.5 to z=0.75, consistent with earlier work. However, the other Schechter function parameters, the faint-end slope and the number density, are found to be remarkably constant over the range z=0.75-2.5. Using these LF determinations we find the UV luminosity density to increase by ~1.4 dex according to (1+z)^{2.58+-0.15} from z~0 to its peak at z~2.5. Strikingly, the inferred faint-end slopes for our LFs are all steeper than alpha=-1.5, in agreement with higher-redshift LBG studies. Since the faint-end slope in the local universe is found to be much flatter with alpha~=-1.2, this poses the question as to when and how the expected flattening occurs. Despite relatively large uncertainties, our data suggest alpha~=-1.7 at least down to z~1. We investigate the Spitzer/IRAC properties of 36 z~7 z-dropout galaxies and 3 z~8 Y-dropout galaxies derived from deep/wide-area WFC3/IR data of the Early Release Science, the ultradeep HUDF09, and wide-area NICMOS data. We fit stellar population synthesis models to the SEDs to derive mean redshifts, stellar masses, and ages. The z~7 galaxies are best characterized by substantial ages (>100 Myr) and M/L_V~0.2. The main trend with decreasing luminosity is that of bluing of the far-UV slope from beta~-2.0 to beta~-3.0. This can be explained by decreasing metallicity, except for the lowest luminosity galaxies (0.1 L*{z=3}), where low metallicity and smooth SFHs fail to match the blue far-UV and moderately red H-[3.6] color. Such colors may require episodic SFHs with short periods of activity and quiescence ("on-off" cycles) and/or a contribution from emission lines. The stellar mass of our sample of z~7 star forming galaxies correlates with SFR according to log M* = 8.70 (+-0.09) + 1.06(+-0.10) log SFR, implying star formation may have commenced at z>10. No galaxies are found with SFRs much higher or lower than the past averaged SFR suggesting that the typical star formation timescales are probably a substantial fraction of the Hubble time. We report the first IRAC detection of Y-dropout galaxies at z~8. The average rest-frame U-V=0.3 (AB) of the 3 galaxies are similar to faint z~7 galaxies, implying similar M/L. We study the relation between size and star formation activity in a complete sample of 225 massive (M > 5 x 10^10 Msun) galaxies at 1.5, 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report on deep spectroscopy using LRIS on Keck I and FORS2 on the VLT of a sample of 22 candidate z~6 Lyman Break galaxies (LBGs) selected by the i-z> 1.3 dropout criterion. Redshifts could be measured for eight objects. These redshifts are all in the range z = 5.5 - 6.1, confirming the efficiency of the i-z color selection technique. Six of the confirmed galaxies show Ly-alpha emission. Assuming that the 14 objects without redshifts are z~6 LBGs, but lack detectable Ly-alpha emission lines, we infer that the fraction of Ly-alpha emitting LBGs with Ly-alpha equivalent widths greater than 20 Angstroms among z~6 LBGs is ~30%, similar to that found at z~3. Every Ly-alpha emitting object in our sample is compact with r 97% confidence. We speculate the small sizes of Ly-alpha emitting LBGs are due to these objects being less massive than other LBGs at z~6., 24 pages in emulate ApJ, 17 color figures (some resized to fit submission limits), and 3 tables. We present UBVRIz' optical images of the 0.32 square degree Extended Hubble Deep Field South. This is one of four fields comprising the MUSYC survey, which is optimized for the study of galaxies at z=3, AGN demographics, and Galactic structure. We calculate corrected aperture photometry and its uncertainties and find through tests that these provide a significant improvement upon standard techniques. Our photometric catalog of 62968 objects is complete to a total magnitude of R_AB=25. We select z=3 Lyman break galaxy (LBG) candidates from their UVR colors and find a sky surface density of 1.4/sq. arcmin and an angular correlation function w(theta) = 2.3+-1.0 theta^{-0.8}. We present deep 3.6 - 8 micron imaging of the Hubble Deep Field South with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We study Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) at z>2 selected by Js - Ks > 2.3 and compare them to a sample of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=2-3. The observed UV-to-8 micron spectral energy distributions are fit with stellar population models to constrain star formation histories and derive stellar masses. We find that 70% of the DRGs are best described by dust-reddened star forming models and 30% are very well fit with old and ``dead'' models. Using only the I - Ks and Ks - 4.5 micron colors we can effectively separate the two groups. The dead systems are among the most massive at z~2.5 (mean stellar mass = 0.8 x 10^11 Msun) and likely formed most of their stellar mass at z>5. To a limit of 0.5 x 10^11 Msun their number density is ~10 x lower than that of local early-type galaxies. Furthermore, we use the IRAC photometry to derive rest-frame near-infrared J, H, and K fluxes. The DRGs and LBGs together show a large variation (a factor of 6) in the rest-frame K-band mass-to-light ratios (M/L_K), implying that even a Spitzer 8 micron-selected sample would be very different from a mass-selected sample. The average M/L_K of the DRGs is about three times higher than that of the LBGs, and DRGs dominate the high-mass end. The M/L_K ratios and ages of the two samples appear to correlate with derived stellar mass, with the most massive galaxies being the oldest and having the highest mass-to-light ratios, similar as found in the low-redshift universe., 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters, uses emulateapj

We investigate the nature of the substantial population of high-z galaxies with Js-Ks>2.3 discovered as part of our FIRES survey. This colour cut efficiently isolates z>2 galaxies with red rest-frame optical colors ("Distant Red Galaxies" or DRGs). Optical and infrared monitoring of the afterglow site of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 031203 has revealed a brightening source embedded in the host galaxy, which we attribute to the presence of a supernova (SN) related to the GRB ("SN 031203"). We present details of the discovery and evolution of SN 031203 from 0.2 to 92 days after the GRB, derived from SMARTS consortium photometry in I and J bands. A template type Ic lightcurve, constructed from SN 1998bw photometry, is consistent with the peak brightness of SN 031203 although the lightcurves are not identical. Differential astrometry reveals that the SN, and hence the GRB, occurred less than 300 h_71^-1 pc (3-sigma) from the apparent galaxy center. The peak of the supernova is brighter than the optical afterglow suggesting that this source is intermediate between a strong GRB and a supernova., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJ Letters

We present deep near-infrared (NIR) Js, H, and Ks-band ISAAC imaging of the WFPC2 field of the HDF-S. The 2.5'x 2.5' high Galactic latitude field was observed with the VLT under the best seeing conditions with integration times amounting to 33.6 hours in Js, 32.3 hours in H, and 35.6 hours in Ks. We reach total AB magnitudes for point sources of 26.8, 26.2, and 26.2 respectively (3 sigma), which make it the deepest ground-based NIR observations to date, and the deepest Ks-band data in any field. The effective seeing of the coadded images is ~0.45" in Js, ~0.48" in H, and ~0.46" in Ks. Using published WFPC2 optical data, we constructed a Ks-limited multicolor catalog containing 833 sources down to Ks,tot ~< 26 (AB), of which 624 have seven-band optical-to-NIR photometry. These data allow us to select normal galaxies from their rest-frame optical properties to high redshift (z ~< 4). The observations, data reduction and properties of the final images are discussed, and we address the detection and photometry procedures that were used in making the catalog. In addition, we present deep number counts, color distributions and photometric redshifts of the HDF-S galaxies. We find that our faint Ks-band number counts are flatter than published counts in other deep fields, which might reflect cosmic variations or different analysis techniques. Compared to the HDF-N, we find many galaxies with very red V-H colors at photometric redshifts 1.95 < z < 3.5. These galaxies are bright in Ks with infrared colors redder than Js-Ks > 2.3 (in Johnson magnitudes). Because they are extremely faint in the observed optical, they would be missed by ultraviolet-optical selection techniques, such as the U-dropout method., LaTeX, 24 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables. We report the discovery of a rapidly rotating disk in a K-selected galaxy at z=1.34. Spatially resolved kinematics are determined from deep, moderate resolution Keck spectroscopy covering the redshifted [OII] 3727 line. A conservative estimate of the maximum rotation velocity V_max = 290 +- 20 km/s, placing the galaxy among the most rapid rotators known. An HST WFPC2 image taken in the F814W filter (rest-frame U) shows that the [OII] emission originates in a ring of star forming regions ~3'' (~20 kpc) across. In the K-band the galaxy is compact, and its position coincides with the center of the star forming ring seen in the rest-frame near-UV. The galaxy has M_V = -22.4 +- 0.2 (~3 L*) in the rest-frame, and its spectral energy distribution is very well fitted by that of a redshifted Sb/c galaxy. The observed kinematics, morphology, and spectral energy distribution are consistent with a massive bulge-disk system at z=1.34. The lower limit on V_max gives an upper limit on the offset from the present-day Tully-Fisher relation. The galaxy is overluminous by less than 0.7 +- 0.4 magnitudes in rest-frame V, consistent with previous studies of disk galaxies at lower redshift. Taken together, these results suggest that some of the most luminous spiral galaxies in the nearby Universe were already in place ~10^10 yr ago, placing a constraint on models for their formation., Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present a study of the galaxy population in the cluster RXJ0848+4453 at z=1.27, using deep HST NICMOS and WFPC2 images. We morphologically classify all galaxies to K_s=20.6 that are covered by the HST imaging, and determine photometric redshifts using deep ground based BRIzJK_s photometry. Of 22 likely cluster members with morphological classifications, eleven (50%) are classified as early-type galaxies, nine (41%) as spiral galaxies, and two (9%) as ``merger/peculiar''. At HST resolution the second brightest cluster galaxy is resolved into a spectacular merger between three red galaxies of similar luminosity, separated from each other by ~6 kpc, with an integrated magnitude K=17.6 (~3 L* at z=1.27). The two most luminous early-type galaxies also show evidence for recent or ongoing interactions. Mergers and interactions between galaxies are possible because RXJ0848+4453 is not yet relaxed. Afterglow, or long-lived emission, has now been detected from about a dozen well-positioned gamma-ray bursts. Distance determinations made by measuring optical emission lines from the host galaxy, or absorption lines in the afterglow spectrum, place the burst sources at significant cosmological distances, with redshifts ranging from ~1--3. The energy required to produce the bright gamma-ray flashes is enormous: up to ~10^{53} erg or 10 percent of the rest mass energy of a neutron star, if the emission is isotropic. Here we present the discovery of the optical afterglow and the redshift of GRB 990123, the brightest well-localized GRB to date. With our measured redshift of >1.6, the inferred isotropic energy release exceeds the rest mass of a neutron star thereby challenging current theoretical models for the origin of GRBs. We argue that the optical and IR afterglow measurements reported here may provide the first observational evidence of beaming in a GRB, thereby reducing the required energetics to a level where stellar death models are still tenable., Revised version (27 Feb 99). 19 pages, 3 figures. We present results from a morphological study of the distant X-ray cluster MS1054-03 at z=0.83. We have obtained a large, two color HST WFPC2 mosaic of this cluster, and measured redshifts of 186 galaxies in the MS1054-03 field with the 10m Keck telescope. Of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster galaxies observerd with HST, 13 are merger systems. Most of these mergers will likely evolve into luminous elliptical galaxies, and some may evolve into S0 galaxies. If the galaxy population in MS1054-03 is typical for its redshift up to 50% of ellipticals may have formed in mergers at z, 4 pages, including figures. We used the Hubble Space Telescope to take a wide field, multicolor image of the high redshift cluster MS1054-03 at z=0.83. The Keck telescope was used to take 200 redshifts in the field. We have a total of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members with deep WFPC2 imaging. A surprisingly large number of these cluster members are mergers: 13 out of 77 galaxies are classified as merger remnants, or mergers in progress. Most of these are red, and massive. Their restframe B luminosities are amongst the brightest in the cluster: we find that 5 out of the brightest 16 are mergers. No such bright mergers were found in a lower redshift cluster with similar wide field coverage. The mergers in MS1054-03 are preferentially found in the outskirts of the cluster. The distribution of pairs in the outskirts of the cluster shows an excess of galaxies with separation < 10 h^-1 kpc, which is independent confirmation of the enhanced interaction rate. The fraction of mergers (17 %) is comparable to the fraction of ellipticals (22 %). Hence up to 50 % of low redshift ellipticals may have formed through mergers since z=1. There is no evidence for strong star formation in most of the mergers. The mean stellar ages of the mergers may therefore be much older than the ``assembly age'', i.e., the age since the time the system was put together.
