One of the key differences between these two species is their use of their upper extremities. Humans use this limb mainly in manipulative tasks, while chimpanzees also use it during locomotion. In this study, we have analyzed the muscle architecture and the expression of the myosin heavy chain isoforms in the two elbow extensor muscles, the triceps brachii and the anconeus, in humans and chimpanzees, in order to find differences that could be related to the different uses of the upper extremities in these species. We have found that the triceps brachii of chimpanzees is more prepared for strength and power as an adaptation to locomotion, while the same muscle in humans is more prepared for speed and resistance to fatigue as an adaptation to manipulative activities. Our results increase the knowledge we have of the musculoskeletal system of chimpanzees and can be applied in various fields, such as comparative anatomy, evolutionary anatomy or anthropology. The anatomical and functional characteristics of the elbow extensor muscles (triceps brachii and anconeus) have not been widely studied in non-human hominoid primates, despite their great functional importance. In the present study, we have analyzed the muscle architecture and the expression of the myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms in the elbow extensors in humans and chimpanzees. Our main objective was to identify differences in these muscles that could be related to the different uses of the upper extremity in the two species. In five humans and five chimpanzees, we have analyzed muscle mass (MM), muscle fascicle length (MFL), and the physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA). In addition, we have assessed the expression of the MHC isoforms by RT-PCR. We have found high MM and PCSA values and higher expression of the MHC-IIx isoform in the triceps brachii of chimpanzees, while in humans, the triceps brachii has high MFL values and a higher expression of the MHC-I and MHC-IIa isoforms. In contrast, there were no significant differences between humans and chimpanzees in any of the values for the anconeus. These findings could be related to the participation of the triceps brachii in the locomotion of chimpanzees and to the use of the upper extremity in manipulative functions in humans. The results obtained in the anconeus support its primary function as a stabilizer of the elbow joint in the two species.

This research aims to detect the effectiveness of different resistance exercise volumes for upper and lower extremity muscle hypertrophic response in healthy adults. A systematic review and meta analysis of experimental studies that different volumes of resistance exercises were applied and studies evaluating muscle hypertrophy were conducted.

Introduction Triceps brachii muscle is the only muscle of posterior compartment of arm, consisting of three heads—long, lateral, and medial. Radial nerve and profunda brachii artery run in the radial groove that separate lateral and medial head. Evolutionarily, triceps has many subheads which either fused or disappeared. Therefore, the knowledge of muscle is essential anthropologically and clinically, and this study aims to study the anatomical variations of triceps brachii muscle. Case Report In the present case, during routine dissections of undergraduate MBBS students, a fourth head of origin of triceps brachii muscle was seen in a male cadaver in the right arm. The variation was seen only unilaterally in cadaver. The origin was tendinous arising from the posteromedial aspect of upper part of the shaft of the humerus close to the surgical neck above the radial groove. This tendon was arching over the neurovascular bundle containing radial nerve and profunda brachii artery. Discussion and Conclusion The variations of triceps brachii muscles are mentioned in literature but are uncommon and if tendinous fourth head is present over the neurovascular bundles, it may lead to compression syndrome. Hence, these variations are of great importance to the radiologists, surgeons, and orthopaedicians while dealing with posterior compartment of arm.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a non-neoplastic benign lesion comprising various inflammatory cells, including myofibroblasts and vascular tissues. It is a rare tumor that sometimes shows similar signs and progression as malignant tumors. The anatomical sites of IMTs include the lungs, liver, orbit, skin, mesentery, and maxillary sinus, but they rarely occur in the limb musculoskeletal system. To our knowledge, no case of neurological symptoms caused by the tumor in the triceps brachii muscle has been reported. In this article, we report the case of a 42-year-old male patient with an IMT that grew rapidly in the triceps brachii muscle and consequently caused symptoms of ulnar nerve lesion owing to its increasing size. The patient showed no ulnar nerve lesion symptoms after undergoing wide excision and was diagnosed with anaplastic lymphoma receptor tyrosine kinase- negative IMT.

IntroductionLittle is known about potential differences in contractile properties of muscle fibers of the same type in arms and legs. Accordingly, the present study was designed to compare the force-generating capacity and Ca2+ sensitivity of fibers from arm and leg muscles of highly trained cross-country skiers.MethodSingle muscle fibers of m. vastus lateralis and m. triceps brachii of eight highly trained cross-country skiers were analyzed with respect to maximal Ca2+-activated force, specific force and Ca2+ sensitivity.ResultThe maximal Ca2+-activated force was greater for myosin heavy chain (MHC) II than MHC I fibers in both the arm (+62%, P < 0.001) and leg muscle (+77%, P < 0.001), with no differences between limbs for each MHC isoform. In addition, the specific force of MHC II fibers was higher than that of MHC I fibers in both arms (+41%, P = 0.002) and legs (+95%, P < 0.001). The specific force of MHC II fibers was the same in both limbs, whereas MHC I fibers from the m. triceps brachii were, on average, 39% stronger than fibers of the same type from the m. vastus lateralis (P = 0.003). pCa50 was not different between MHC I and II fibers in neither arms nor legs, but the MHC I fibers of m. triceps brachii demonstrated higher Ca2+ sensitivity than fibers of the same type from m. vastus lateralis (P = 0.007).ConclusionComparison of muscles in limbs equally well trained revealed that MHC I fibers in the arm muscle exhibited a higher specific force-generating capacity and greater Ca2+ sensitivity than the same type of fiber in the leg, with no such difference in the case of MHC II fibers. These distinct differences in the properties of fibers of the same type in equally well-trained muscles open new perspectives in muscle physiology.

The aim of this study was to analyze the Sticking Re-gion at submaximal (70%, 80%, 90% until failure) and maximal (1RM) loads in the concentric phase during bench press. Eleven male individuals participated in the study (age: 22.73 ± 2.57 years, body mass: 80.2 ± 6.9 kg, height: 179.6 ± 7.4 cm, 1RM: 94.55 ± 11.56 kg) with at least two years of bench press training experience. In our sample, The Sticking Region could only be obser-ved with 90% and 100% 1RM loads. The velocity results showed significant differences in 1RM (p ≤ 0.001) and in 90% (p = 0.014) during the three phases (Pre-Sticking, Sticking Region and Post-Sticking zones). Differences in the electromyographic activity of the triceps brachii were found only between the Pre-StickingRegion and the Sticking Region and between the Pre-Sticking Re-gion and the Post-StickingRegion at 1RM. The activity between the Sticking Region and Post-StickingRegionat 90% and 1RM did not differ significantly. Neuromuscular fatigue evaluation is widely performed on different muscles through the conventional protocol using maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) with electrical stimuli in the analyzed muscle. In an attempt to use this protocol on elbow extensor musculature, previous studies and pilot studies showed co-contraction effects from antagonist musculature during muscular stimulations. The aim of this study was to propose a new neuromuscular fatigue protocol evaluation on elbow extensor musculature. Twenty participants preformed exercises to induce central (CenFat) and peripheral fatigue (PerFat). Neuromuscular fatigue was evaluated on knee extensor muscles by a conventional protocol that provides Twitch Superimposed (TSK) and Twitch Potentiated (TPK), central and peripheral parameters respectively. For elbow extensor muscles, the protocol used sustained submaximal contraction at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50% of MVC. The neuromuscular fatigue in upper limbs was identified by Twitch Potentiated (TPE) and multiple Twitch Superimposed (TSE) parameters. Using the relationship between MVC (%) and evoked force, the proposed protocol used several TSE to provide slope, y-intercept and R2. It is proposed that slope, R2, and y-intercept change may indicate peripheral fatigue and the identified relationship between y-intercept and R2 may indicate central fatigue or both peripheral and central fatigue. The results were compared using the non-parametric analyzes of Friedmann and Wilcoxon and their possible correlations were verified by the Spearmann test (significance level set at p < 0.05). After PerFat a decrease in TPE (57.1%, p < 0.001) was found but not in any TSE, indicating only peripheral fatigue in upper limbs. After CenFat a decrease in TPE (21.4%, p: 0.008) and TPK (20.9%, p < 0.001) were found but not in TSK, indicating peripheral fatigue in upper and lower limbs but not central fatigue. A non-significant increase of 15.3% after CenFat and a statistical reduction (80.1%, p: 0.001) after PerFat were found by slope. Despite R2 showing differences after both exercises (p < 0.05), it showed a recovery behavior after CenFat (p: 0.016). Although PerFat provided only peripheral fatigue, CenFat did not provide central fatigue. Considering the procedural limitations of CenFat, parameters resulting from the proposed protocol are sensitive to neuromuscular alteration, however, further studies are required.

The present study examined the muscle activation in lateral raise with humerus rotated externally (LR-external), neutrally (LR-neutral), internally (LR-internal), with flexed elbow (LR-flexed) and frontal raise during both the concentric and eccentric phase. Ten competitive bodybuilders performed the exercises. Normalized surface electromyographic root mean square (sEMG RMS) was obtained from anterior, medial, and posterior deltoid, pectoralis major, upper trapezius, and triceps brachii. During the concentric phase, anterior deltoid and posterior deltoid showed greater sEMG RMS in frontal raise (effect size (ES)-range: 1.78/9.25)) and LR-internal (ES-range: 10.79/21.34), respectively, vs. all other exercises. Medial deltoid showed greater sEMG RMS in LR-neutral than LR-external (ES: 1.47 (95% confidence-interval&mdash, CI: 0.43/2.38)), frontal raise (ES: 10.28(95% CI: 6.67/13.01)), and LR-flexed (ES: 6.41(95% CI: 4.04/8.23)). Pectoralis major showed greater sEMG RMS in frontal raise vs. all other exercises (ES-range: 17.2/29.5), while upper trapezius (ES-range: 2.66/7.18) and triceps brachii (ES-range: 0.41/3.31) showed greater sEMG RMS in LR-internal vs. all other exercises. Similar recruitment patterns were found during the eccentric phase. When humerus rotates internally, greater activation of posterior deltoid, triceps brachii, and upper trapezius occurs. Humerus external rotation increases the activation of anterior and medial deltoid. Frontal raise mainly activates anterior deltoid and pectoralis major. LR variations and frontal raise activate specifically shoulders muscles and should be proposed accordingly.

Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) demonstrate deficits in muscle activation such as decreased amplitude and inappropriate bursting. There is evidence that some of these disturbances are more pronounced in extensor vs. flexor muscles. Surface EMG has been used widely to quantify muscle activation deficits in PD, but analysis of discharge of the underlying motor units may provide greater insight and be more sensitive to changes early in the disease. Of the few studies that have examined motor unit discharge in PD, the majority were conducted in the first dorsal interosseous, and no studies have measured motor units from extensor and flexor muscles within the same cohort. The objective of this study was to characterize the firing behavior of single motor units in the elbow flexor and extensor muscles during isometric contractions in people with mild-to-moderate PD. Ten individuals with PD (off-medication) and nine healthy controls were tested. Motor unit spike times were recorded via intramuscular EMG from the biceps and triceps brachii muscles during 30-s isometric contractions at 10% maximum voluntary elbow flexion and elbow extension torque, respectively. We selected variables of mean motor unit discharge rate, discharge variability, and torque variability to evaluate motor abnormalities in the PD group. The effects of group, muscle, and group-by-muscle on each variable were determined using separate linear mixed models. Discharge rate and torque variability were not different between groups, but discharge variability was significantly higher in the PD group for both muscles combined (p < 0.0001). We also evaluated the asymmetry in these motor variables between the triceps and biceps for each individual participant with PD to evaluate whether there was an association with disease severity. The difference in torque variability between elbow flexion and extension was significantly correlated with both the Hoehn and Yahr scale (rho = 0.71) and UPDRS (rho = 0.62). Our findings demonstrate that variability in motor output, rather than decreased discharge rates, may contribute to motor dysfunction in people with mild-to-moderate PD. Our findings provide insight into altered neural control of movement in PD and demonstrate the importance of measuring from multiple muscles within the same cohort.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate fatigue in the three heads of the triceps brachii (TB) muscle using surface electromyography (sEMG) obtained at 30%, 45% and 60% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Methods: Twenty-five subjects performed isometric elbow extension until failure, and the rate of fatigue (ROF), time to fatigue (TTF) and normalized TTF (NTTF) were statistically analysed. Subsequently, the behaviour of root-mean-square (RMS), mean-power frequency (MPF) and median-power frequency (MDF) under pre-, onset- and post-fatigue conditions were compared. Summary Study aim: The aim of the present study was to examine a single movement of dynamic stretching (SMDS) of the shooting arm as a pre-shot routine for free throw performance (FTP). Material and methods: The sample consisted of 60 junior and senior basketball players from the youth league of Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H), and the national level – the First Division of B&H. The authors found that some players during a game and training sessions apply an SMDS of the shooting arm as a pre-shot routine for FTP. Since previous literature suggests that length of the routine and pre-performance behaviors are quite different among players of all levels, the sample was divided based on the number of training hours per week (lower/higher number of training hours) and basketball experience (experienced/less experienced). The procedure involves every player performing five free throws (FTs) without prior stretching, five FTs immediately after SMDS of the triceps muscle and five FTs after SMDS of the m. flexor carpi radialis. Results: After the first SMDS (m. triceps brachii) the percentage of FT slightly decreased in the first following attempt. After the second stretching (m. flexor carpi radialis), a significant FT percentage drop was noted in the first following FT for the whole sample. Players with more experience and more training hours per week had poorer results after the stretching. Conclusions: The SMDS routine did not enhance the FTP and it had a rather harmful effect on FTP, especially SMDS of the flexor carpi radialis muscle, and the authors do not recommend SMDS before the FTP.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of changes in exercise intensity and speed on the three heads of the triceps brachii (TB) during triceps push-down exercise until task failure. Twenty-five subjects performed triceps push-down exercise at three different intensities (30, 45, and 60% 1RM) and speeds (slow, medium, and fast) until failure, and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals were recorded from the lateral, long and medial heads of the TB. The endurance time (ET), number of repetitions (NR) and rate of fatigue (ROF) were analyzed. Subsequently, the root-mean-square (RMS), mean power frequency (MPF) and median frequency (MDF) under no-fatigue (NF) and fatigue (Fa) conditions were statistically compared. The findings reveal that ROF increases with increase in the intensity and speed, and the opposite were obtained for the ET. The ROF in the three heads were comparable for all intensities and speeds. The ROF showed a significant difference (P < 0.05) among the three intensities and speeds for all heads. The three heads showed significantly different (P < 0.05) MPF and MDF values for all the performed exercises under both conditions, whereas the RMS values were significantly different only under Fa conditions. The current observations suggest that exercise intensity and speed affect the ROF while changes in intensity do not affect the MPF and MDF under Fa conditions. The behavior of the spectral parameters indicate that the three heads do not work in unison under any of the conditions. Changes in the speed of triceps push-down exercise affects the lateral and long heads, but changes in the exercise intensity affected the attributes of all heads to a greater extent.

Skeletal muscle myofibers constantly undergo degeneration and regeneration. Histopathological features of 6 skeletal muscles (cranial tibial [CT], gastrocnemius, quadriceps femoris, triceps brachii [TB], lumbar longissimus muscles, and costal part of the diaphragm [CPD]) were compared using C57BL/10ScSn-Dmd (mdx) (mdx) mice, a model for muscular dystrophy versus control, C57BL/10 mice. Body weight and skeletal muscle mass were lower in mdx mice than the control at 4 weeks of age; these results were similar at 6-30 weeks. Additionally, muscular lesions were observed in all examined skeletal muscles in mdx mice after 4 weeks, but none were noted in the controls. Immunohistochemical staining revealed numerous paired box 7-positive satellite cells surrounding the embryonic myosin heavy chain-positive regenerating myofibers, while the number of the former and staining intensity of the latter decreased as myofiber regeneration progressed. Persistent muscular lesions were observed in skeletal muscles of mdx mice between 4 and 14 weeks of age, and normal myofibers decreased with age. Number of muscular lesions was lowest in CPD at all ages examined, while the ratio of normal myofibers was lowest in TB at 6 weeks. In CT, TB, and CPD, Iba1-positive macrophages, the main inflammatory cells in skeletal muscle lesions, showed a significant positive correlation with the appearance of regenerating myofibers. Additionally, B220-positive B-cells showed positive and negative correlation with regenerating and regenerated myofibers, respectively. Our data suggest that degenerative and regenerative features of myofibers differ among skeletal muscles and that inflammatory cells are strongly associated with regenerative features of myofibers in mdx mice.

Background: Free throws are a very important element in modern basketball. There are many studies focused on different aspects ranging from variability in the mechanics of throwing at various skill levels to the influence of free throws on the results of games. Objective: Since the authors of the present study noticed that some players during a game apply static stretching of shooting arm as a preparation to perform the free throw, we wanted to question the justification of such procedure prior to the performance of free throws. The purpose of this study was to determine an effect of submaximal 15 seconds static stretching of the upper arm (m. triceps brachii) and forearm (m. flexor carpi radialis) on the accuracy of free throws in basketball. Methods: Participants of the present study were 100 basketball players; mean age was 18.2 ± 2.54 years. The sample was divided into two groups - players with higher (n = 70; 6.83 ± 1.83 hours/week) and lower number (n = 30; 4.17 ± 0.48 hours/week) of training sessions per week. Furthermore, we compared separately experienced (n = 47; 12.2 ± 0.55 years) and less experienced basketball players (n = 53; 6.4 ± 0.45 years). The procedure purported that every player performs five free throws without prior stretching, five free throws immediately after 15 seconds of static stretching of upper arm muscle (m. triceps brachii), and five free throws after 15 seconds of static stretching of the forearm (m. flexor carpi radialis). Results: Fifteen seconds of static stretching of the upper arm and forearm muscles had a negative influence on the accuracy of free throw shooting in basketball. Players with a higher number of training sessions per week showed better tolerance to this negative influence. Conclusion: Results of this study indicate that is not useful to apply static stretching of the triceps brachii and flexor carpi radialis muscles just before the execution of free throws.

Injuries of the triceps brachii muscle are a rare entity and mostly concern its distal tendon. These represent the least common of all muscle and tendons injuries. The most common reported causes are repeated strong physical efforts, a fall on an outstretched forearm when a sudden deceleration is put on contract triceps, or a direct trauma. High-dosed and prolonged corticosteroid therapies, repeated local steroid injections, chronic renal failure, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hyperparathyroidism, and osteogenesis imperfecta are reported as systemic causes. Even rarer are lesions of muscle fibers and avulsions or rupture at its musculotendinous junction, and these can be caused by direct trauma or by forced elbow flexion during triceps contraction. To the best of our knowledge, there is no article in the literature describing this type of injury that occurred after electrocution. In this article, we report an uncommon case of intramuscular tear associated with insertional distal tendon injury occurred in a man survived to high-voltage electric discharge.

Transcranial magnetic (TMS) and motor point stimulation have been used to determine voluntary activation (VA). However, very few studies have directly compared the two stimulation techniques for assessing VA of the elbow flexors. The purpose of this study was to compare TMS and motor point stimulation for assessing VA in non-fatigued and fatigued elbow flexors. Participants performed a fatigue protocol that included twelve, 15 s isometric elbow flexor contractions. Participants completed a set of isometric elbow flexion contractions at 100, 75, 50, and 25% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) prior to and following fatigue contractions 3, 6, 9, and 12 and 5 and 10 min post-fatigue. Force and EMG of the bicep and triceps brachii were measured for each contraction. Force responses to TMS and motor point stimulation and EMG responses to TMS (motor evoked potentials, MEPs) and Erb's point stimulation (maximal M-waves, Mmax) were also recorded. VA was estimated using the equation: VA% = (1−SITforce/PTforce) × 100. The resting twitch was measured directly for motor point stimulation and estimated for both motor point stimulation and TMS by extrapolation of the linear regression between the superimposed twitch force and voluntary force. MVC force, potentiated twitch force and VA significantly (p < 0.05) decreased throughout the elbow flexor fatigue protocol and partially recovered 10 min post fatigue. VA was significantly (p < 0.05) underestimated when using TMS compared to motor point stimulation in non-fatigued and fatigued elbow flexors. Motor point stimulation compared to TMS superimposed twitch forces were significantly (p < 0.05) higher at 50% MVC but similar at 75 and 100% MVC. The linear relationship between TMS superimposed twitch force and voluntary force significantly (p < 0.05) decreased with fatigue. There was no change in triceps/biceps electromyography, biceps/triceps MEP amplitudes, or bicep MEP amplitudes throughout the fatigue protocol at 100% MVC. In conclusion, motor point stimulation as opposed to TMS led to a higher estimation of VA in non-fatigued and fatigued elbow flexors. The decreased linear relationship between TMS superimposed twitch force and voluntary force led to an underestimation of the estimated resting twitch force and thus, a reduced VA.

Turnstedt, M. – Background. Resistance training has many positive effects on the human body and can be beneficial for people all ages. The bench press exercise is a commonly used exercise that targets many upper body muscles such as pectotralis major, triceps brachii, deltoideus, serratus anterior and the abdominal muscles. Variations of the bench press exercise are common where grip width variations are supposed to largely impact the muscles targeted. Some research has been done to accurately decide whether these theories are true, however more research is needed to definitely decide the effect on muscle activity of grip width in bench press. Aim. The aim of this study was to compare the muscle activity with surface electromyography (EMG) in pectoralis major and triceps brachii between wide, regular and narrow grip width in the bench press exercise. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different agricultural products on quantitative aspects of carcass, body constituents, cooking loss, shear force and colorimetry of the Longissimus lumborum and Triceps brachii muscles in Santa Ines lambs. 24 Santa Ines female lambs received one of four diets which were isoproteic and isoenergetic with fixed levels of forage (60%) and concentrate (40%) of corn and soybean meal during 45 days. The forages per diet differed: coast-cross hay (HAY), cassava hay (CASS), dehydrated by-product of pea crop (PEA) and sugarcane (SC). Source at https://doi.org/10.3389/fphys.2016.00426 To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the differences in adaptation of arm and leg muscles to sprint training, over a period of 11 days 16 untrained men performed six sessions of 4–6 × 30-s all-out sprints (SIT) with the legs and arms, separately, with a 1-h interval of recovery. Limb-specific VO2peak, sprint performance (two 30-s Wingate tests with 4-min recovery), muscle efficiency and time-trial performance (TT, 5-min all-out) were assessed and biopsies from the m. vastus lateralis and m. triceps brachii taken before and after training. VO2peak and Wmax increased 3–11% after training, with a more pronounced change in the arms (P < 0.05). Gross efficiency improved for the arms (+8.8%, P < 0.05), but not the legs (−0.6%). Wingate peak and mean power outputs improved similarly for the arms and legs, as did TT performance. After training, VO2 during the two Wingate tests was increased by 52 and 6% for the arms and legs, respectively (P < 0.001). In the case of the arms, VO2 was higher during the first than second Wingate test (64 vs. 44%, P < 0.05). During the TT, relative exercise intensity, HR, VO2, VCO2, VE, and Vt were all lower during arm-cranking than leg-pedaling, and oxidation of fat was minimal, remaining so after training. Despite the higher relative intensity, fat oxidation was 70% greater during leg-pedaling (P = 0.017). The aerobic energy contribution in the legs was larger than for the arms during the Wingate tests, although VO2 for the arms was enhanced more by training, reducing the O2 deficit after SIT. The levels of muscle glycogen, as well as the myosin heavy chain composition were unchanged in both cases, while the activities of 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase and citrate synthase were elevated only in the legs and capillarization enhanced in both limbs. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that the variables that predict TT performance differ for the arms and legs. The primary mechanism of adaptation to SIT by both the arms and legs is enhancement of aerobic energy production. However, with their higher proportion of fast muscle fibers, the arms exhibit greater plasticity.

Rare additional slips of triceps brachii muscle was found bilaterally in a sixty two year old South Indian male cadaver during routine dissection of upper limb for undergraduate students at Melaka-Manipal Medical College, Manipal University, Manipal, India. On left side, the variant additional muscle slip took origin from the lower part of the medial intermuscular septum about 4 cm proximal to the medial humeral epicondyle. From its origin, the muscle fibres were passing over the ulnar nerve and were joining the triceps muscle to get inserted to the upper surface of olecranon process of ulna. On right side, the additional muscle slip was larger and bulkier and was arising from the lower part of the medial border of the humerus about 4 cm proximal to the medial epicondyle in addition to its attachment to the medial intermuscular septum. On both sides, the additional slips were supplied by twigs from the radial nerve. On both sides, the ulnar nerve was passing between variant additional slip and the lower part of the shaft of the humerus in an osseo-musculo-fibrous tunnel. Such variant additional muscle slips may affect the function of triceps muscle and can lead to snapping of medial head of triceps and ulnar nerve over medial epicondyle and also can dynamically compress the ulnar nerve during the contraction of triceps leading to ulnar neuropathy around the elbow.

Exploring muscle architecture in vivo and estimating the number of MUs in the human anconeus muscle have important implications related to the neuromuscular function of this muscle as a model for study in health and disease. The two studies presented in this thesis investigate the functional anatomy of the anconeus in 10 healthy young men (25±3y). Ultrasound imaging has facilitated the measure of the architectural variables, fascicle length (LF) and pennation angle (PA), in many human skeletal muscles in vivo. However, the functional anatomy of the anconeus has been investigated mainly from cadavers exclusively. Thus, the purpose of Chapter 2 was to evaluate, using ultrasonography, the degree of change in architectural features, LF and PA, of the anconeus at rest, across the full range of motion for the elbow joint. The protocol involved imaging the anconeus at 135°, 120°, 90°, 45°, and 0° of elbow flexion. The results indicate that anconeus muscle architecture is dynamic, with LF and PA decreasing and increasing, respectively, with extension of the elbow. The values obtained here are more representative of architectural changes at various elbow joint positions than those reported in cadaveric studies. Motor unit number estimates (MUNE) can be determined electrophysiologically using decomposition-enhanced spike-triggered averaging. To provide the most representative MUNE, muscle activation should equal or exceed the upper limit of MU recruitment to activate the majority of the MU pool. A limitation of muscles studied to date, using DE-STA, is an inability to obtain reliable MUNEs at forces higher than ~30% of a maximum voluntary contraction. Unique features of the anconeus muscle may permit MUNEs at higher muscle activation levels. Thus, the purpose of Chapter 3 was to estimate the number of functional MUs in the anconeus, using DE-STA, at low (10%), moderate (30%), and higher (50%) relative muscle activation levels (root-mean-square of maximum voluntary contraction (RMSMVC)), to determine the effect of muscle activation on MUNEs in this muscle. Low average MUNEs of 58, 38, and 25 were found for the low, moderate, and higher muscle activations, respectively. A histogram of the distribution of surface-detected MU potentials and elbow extensor force-EMG relationship suggest the most representative MUNE was obtained at 50%RMSMVC. The main findings of this thesis are that; 1) anconeus muscle architecture is dynamic, 2) anconeus allows for a more representative MUNE derived at higher muscle activation levels, and 3) the high signal-to-noise ratio that has made the anconeus a choice model in the study of MU properties, is more likely attributed to a relatively low number of MUs than minimal absolute change in its muscle architecture with elbow excursion.

The topographical distribution of different fibre types in muscles of the lower hindlimb in rabbits and mice was quantitatively determined. The results were compared to those previously obtained, using the same new quantification methods, in homologous muscles of the rat. Type I fibres ('slow') were identified using myofibrillar ATPase histochemistry and mapped out at the mid proximo-distal level for 11 'fast' muscles in the rabbit and 7 'fast' muscles in the mouse. For the slow soleus muscle the procedure was undertaken for the type II fibres. Furthermore, for 5 of the 'fast' muscles from each animal species (extensor digitorum longus; flexor digitorum and hallucis longus; gastrocnemius medialis; peroneus longus; tibialis anterior), several more proximal and distal cross-sectional levels were also analysed. All the investigated 'fast' muscles showed a significant degree of topographical eccentricity in the midlevel distribution of type I fibres. We measured the pH24hors, the ability to retain water, lightness (L*), total protein, ether extract, dry matter, fixed mineral residue, redness (a*), yellowness (b*), chroma (C*), hue (H*), cooking weight loss, total collagen and soluble, myofibrillar fragmentation index and shear force. There was no significant effect on pH 24hours (P> 0.05) between the genetic groups on the LTL (5.64), ST (5.72) and TB (5.85). The PH 24hours values of LTL, the reference substrate, were within the normal range (5.3 to 5.7). Genetic groups did not significantly influence the content of fat, the protein, dry matter and mineral, the yellowness, the hue, the weight losses by cooking, myofibrillar fragmentation index, as well as the content of total and soluble collagen. The shear force and the water retention capacity were influenced by genetic groups. The GH group was more tenderness than in the GN group. The capacity of water retention was higher in the GN group than in the GH group, which showed no impact on the main commercial qualities of meat. The content of red and chroma showed interactions among genetic groups and the muscles studied, and the variation in the GH group unlike other genetic groups had lower values in the ST and the other genetic groups had substantially higher values for TB compared to other muscles. Comparing the properties of the different muscles, significant differences were observed in all parameters studied, among them the lowest shear force of TB, and also the ST compared to LTL. This fact might be due to the higher content of fat, the less weight loss by cooking the TB and higher myofibrillar fragmentation index of TB and ST. Also it is assumed that variations in parameters when compared LTL, ST and TB among themselves, might be resulting of anatomical and physiological peculiarities of the muscles that originated them. We can conclude that the genetic groups were similar in almost all quality parameters studied, but lower values of shear force on the GH group. Also was relevant the best quality of TB, measured by objective parameters, compared to the other muscles studied.

However, recent research has examined the ulnar nerve in the upper arm and identified branches supplying the medial head of the triceps brachii muscle. This study aims to expand upon this research by describing the course and incidence of these branches in a larger sample size. We examined 50 specimens in 25 cadavers. Ulnar innervation of the medial head of the triceps brachii was identified in 14 specimens (28%). The mean distance of the ulnar nerve branch midpoint was 26% along a line between the surgical neck and an epicondyle line, with a range of 11-39%. Studies in humans and animals have derived much understanding of neuromuscular function from isometric (static) contractions. In comparison, fewer studies have evaluated dynamic contractions, which are relevant to everyday movements and activities of daily living. The primary purpose of this thesis was to investigate and compare the contributing factors to fatigue during different voluntary contraction tasks. The interpolated twitch technique is commonly used to assess voluntary activation, but with changes in muscle length, musculotendinous slackness can diminish the amplitude of electrically-evoked twitches used to calculate voluntary activation. This might result in erroneous measurements of voluntary activation. Chapter 2 describes an experiment in which at the short muscle lengths, when voluntary activation is 80% or lower, actual activation will be underestimated. Maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) torque is often used to assess overall neuromuscular function, and any activity-induced decline in MVC torque is indicative of fatigue. However, a reduction in shortening velocity is also an important feature of fatigue. Results from Chapter 3 indicate that shortening velocity was an important and perhaps more sensitive measure of fatigue following both isometric and dynamic contraction tasks than MVC torque per se. These findings are further supported in Chapter 4, in which, following comparable repetitive shortening contraction tasks in two different muscles, shortening velocity was reduced to a greater extent at task failure but was restored more rapidly than MVC torque. Shortening contractions are also characterized by a fatigue-related reduction in joint range of motion (ROM) and it was suggested that the reduction in ROM might be due to length-dependent alterations in torque or contractile slowing with fatigue. Results iii presented in Chapter 5, suggest that length-dependent alterations in torque or contractile slowing cannot explain the fatigue-related reduction in dorsiflexion ROM. Thus, in addition to fatigue-related reductions in torque, decreases in shortening velocity and joint range of motion are important indicators of a fatigue-induced impairment in muscle shortening capacity.

Brachial artery (BA) is a continuation of the axillary artery at the lower border of teres major. In the cubital fossa, BA divides into radial artery and ulnar artery as terminal branches. Large branch given from the BA in the upper part is profunda brachii artery. In the present case, we noticed double profunda brachii that arises from the BA. They are profunda brachii artery 1 and profunda brachii artery 2. Profunda brachii artery 1 arises in the proximal part of the BA and profunda brachii artery 2 arises distal to the profunda brachii artery 1. Both the arteries run inferolaterally in the spiral groove along with radial nerve. Variations of profunda brachii artery are important during harvesting of the lateral arm flaps and may lead to inadvertent injury during percutaneous arterial catheterization or injection of drugs.

A variation of the muscles of the scapular region is a very rare finding. During the routine dissection for the undergraduates, a variant short musculo-tendinous slip in between the teres major and the long head of triceps brachii muscles was seen. This slip could cause compression of the underlying brachial vessels and the cords of brachial plexus. Therefore this type of variation is worthy of being noted by the surgeons.
