1. Operating a full tungsten actively cooled tokamak

Abstract

WEST is an MA class superconducting, actively cooled, full tungsten (W) tokamak, designed to operate in long pulses up to 1000 s. In support of ITER operation and DEMO conceptual activities, key missions of WEST are: (i) qualification of high heat flux plasma-facing components in integrating both technological and physics aspects in relevant heat and particle exhaust conditions, particularly for the tungsten monoblocks foreseen in ITER divertor; (ii) integrated steady-state operation at high confinement, with a focus on power exhaust issues. During the phase 1 of operation (2017-2020), a set of actively cooled ITER-grade plasma facing unit prototypes was integrated into the inertially cooled W coated startup lower divertor. Up to 8.8 MW of RF power has been coupled to the plasma and divertor heat flux of up to 6 MW m-2 were reached. Long pulse operation was started, using the upper actively cooled divertor, with a discharge of about 1 min achieved. This paper gives an overview of the results achieved in phase 1. Perspectives for phase 2, operating with the full capability of the device with the complete ITER-grade actively cooled lower divertor, are also described.

Abstract

COMPASS addressed several physical processes that may explain the behaviour of important phenomena. This paper presents results related to the main fields of COMPASS research obtained in the recent two years, including studies of turbulence, L–H transition, plasma material interaction, runaway electron, and disruption physics: Tomographic reconstruction of the edge/SOL turbulence observed by a fast visible camera allowed to visualize turbulent structures without perturbing the plasma. Dependence of the power threshold on the X-point height was studied and related role of radial electric field in the edge/SOL plasma was identified. The effect of high-field-side error fields on the L–H transition was investigated in order to assess the influence of the central solenoid misalignment and the possibility to compensate these error fields by low-field-side coils. Results of fast measurements of electron temperature during ELMs show the ELM peak values at the divertor are around 80% of the initial temperature at the pedestal. Liquid metals were used for the first time as plasma facing material in ELMy H-mode in the tokamak divertor. Good power handling capability was observed for heat fluxes up to 12 MW m−2 and no direct droplet ejection was observed. Partial detachment regime was achieved by impurity seeding in the divertor. The evolution of the heat flux footprint at the outer target was studied. Runaway electrons were studied using new unique systems—impact calorimetry, carbon pellet injection technique, wide variety of magnetic perturbations. Radial feedback control was imposed on the beam. Forces during plasma disruptions were monitored by a number of new diagnostics for vacuum vessel (VV) motion in order to contribute to the scaling laws of sideways disruption forces for ITER. Current flows towards the divertor tiles, incl. possible short-circuiting through PFCs, were investigated during the VDE experiments. The results support ATEC model and improve understanding of disruption loads.

Abstract

Plasmas are gaseous systems of ions and electrons which interact via electromagnetic fields and display collective properties. Among these, is the notion of the magnetic line "connection". This expresses the fact that, in regimes in which charged particles spiral sufficiently fast along lines of magnetic induction, the latter is linked to the bulk plasma motion and acquire a topological identity which forbids them to break, intersect and reconnect. This topological identity, however, can be locally violated thanks to a number of kinetic effects, such as particle collisions, when the currents in the plasma are sufficiently intense: one speaks of "magnetic reconnection". Magnetic reconnection is an important ingredient of the plasma self-organization and has significance for both space and laboratory plasmas since it is at the basis of natural phenomena like solar flares and polar lights, or of disruptive processes in thermonuclear fusion experiments. A long-standing problem in the study of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas is to understand the mechanisms of acceleration of electrons and ions, as a magnetic field reconnect and release energy. In this work, we studied kinetic effects on reconnection instabilities developing spontaneously in static current sheets (tearing modes) and in combination with a class of kinetic instabilities (Weibel instabilities) that are relevant both to astrophysical plasma jets and to laser-plasma interaction experiments. We performed this study using reduced-fluid and kinetic models and we investigated the competition between tearing-type modes and Weibel-type instabilities by means of both semi-lagrangian full kinetic Vlasov-Maxwell simulations and particles in cell simulations., Les plasmas sont des systèmes gazeux d'ions et d'électrons qui interagissent avec les champs électromagnétiques et affichent des propriétés collectives. Parmi ceux-ci, il y a la notion de "connexion" de lignes magnétiques. Ceci exprime le fait que, dans des régimes dans lesquels les particules chargées s'enroulent suffisamment vite le long des lignes d'induction magnétique, ces dernières sont liées au mouvement du plasma massif et acquièrent une identité topologique qui leur interdit de se rompre, se croiser et se reconnecter. Cette identité topologique peut cependant être localement violée grâce à un certain nombre d'effets cinétiques, comme les collisions entre les particules, lorsque les courants dans le plasma sont suffisamment intenses : on parle de “reconnexion magnétique”. La reconnexion magnétique est un ingrédient important de l'auto-organisation du plasma et a une importance pour les plasmas spatiaux et de laboratoire, car elle est à la base de phénomènes naturels comme les éruptions solaires et les aurores polaires, ou de processus disruptifs dans les expériences de fusion thermonucléaire. Un problème de longue date dans l'étude des plasmas de laboratoire et astrophysiques est de comprendre les mécanismes d'accélération des électrons et des ions, lorsqu’un champ magnétique se reconnecte et libère de l'énergie. Dans ce travail, nous avons étudié les effets cinétiques sur les instabilités de reconnexion se développant spontanément dans les nappes de courant statique (modes de déchirement) et en combinaison avec une classe d'instabilités cinétiques (instabilités de Weibel) qui sont pertinentes à la fois pour les jets de plasma astrophysiques et pour les expériences d'interaction laser-plasma. Nous avons effectué cette étude en utilisant des modèles fluides réduits et cinétiques, et nous avons étudié la concurrence entre les modes de type déchirement et les instabilités de type Weibel au moyen de simulations cinétiques complètes avec codes semi-lagrangiennes Vlasov-Maxwell et de type “Particle-In-Cell“.

5. Overview of physics studies on ASDEX upgrade

Abstract

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme, jointly run with the EUROfusion MST1 task force, continues to significantly enhance the physics base of ITER and DEMO. Here, the full tungsten wall is a key asset for extrapolating to future devices. The high overall heating power, flexible heating mix and comprehensive diagnostic set allows studies ranging from mimicking the scrape-off-layer and divertor conditions of ITER and DEMO at high density to fully non-inductive operation (q 95 = 5.5, ) at low density. Higher installed electron cyclotron resonance heating power 6 MW, new diagnostics and improved analysis techniques have further enhanced the capabilities of AUG. Stable high-density H-modes with MW m-1 with fully detached strike-points have been demonstrated. The ballooning instability close to the separatrix has been identified as a potential cause leading to the H-mode density limit and is also found to play an important role for the access to small edge-localized modes (ELMs). Density limit disruptions have been successfully avoided using a path-oriented approach to disruption handling and progress has been made in understanding the dissipation and avoidance of runaway electron beams. ELM suppression with resonant magnetic perturbations is now routinely achieved reaching transiently . This gives new insight into the field penetration physics, in particular with respect to plasma flows. Modelling agrees well with plasma response measurements and a helically localised ballooning structure observed prior to the ELM is evidence for the changed edge stability due to the magnetic perturbations. The impact of 3D perturbations on heat load patterns and fast-ion losses have been further elaborated. Progress has also been made in understanding the ELM cycle itself. Here, new fast measurements of and E r allow for inter ELM transport analysis confirming that E r is dominated by the diamagnetic term even for fast timescales. New analysis techniques allow detailed comparison of the ELM crash and are in good agreement with nonlinear MHD modelling. The observation of accelerated ions during the ELM crash can be seen as evidence for the reconnection during the ELM. As type-I ELMs (even mitigated) are likely not a viable operational regime in DEMO studies of 'natural' no ELM regimes have been extended. Stable I-modes up to have been characterised using -feedback. Core physics has been advanced by more detailed characterisation of the turbulence with new measurements such as the eddy tilt angle - measured for the first time - or the cross-phase angle of and fluctuations. These new data put strong constraints on gyro-kinetic turbulence modelling. In addition, carefully executed studies in different main species (H, D and He) and with different heating mixes highlight the importance of the collisional energy exchange for interpreting energy confinement. A new regime with a hollow profile now gives access to regimes mimicking aspects of burning plasma conditions and lead to nonlinear interactions of energetic particle modes despite the sub-Alfvénic beam energy. This will help to validate the fast-ion codes for predicting ITER and DEMO.

Abstract

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme, jointly run with the EUROfusion MST1 task force, continues to significantly enhance the physics base of ITER and DEMO. Here, the full tungsten wall is a key asset for extrapolating to future devices. The high overall heating power, flexible heating mix and comprehensive diagnostic set allows studies ranging from mimicking the scrape-off-layer and divertor conditions of ITER and DEMO at high density to fully non-inductive operation (q95 = 5.5, ) at low density. Higher installed electron cyclotron resonance heating power 6 MW, new diagnostics and improved analysis techniques have further enhanced the capabilities of AUG. Stable high-density H-modes with MW m−1 with fully detached strike-points have been demonstrated. The ballooning instability close to the separatrix has been identified as a potential cause leading to the H-mode density limit and is also found to play an important role for the access to small edge-localized modes (ELMs). Density limit disruptions have been successfully avoided using a path-oriented approach to disruption handling and progress has been made in understanding the dissipation and avoidance of runaway electron beams. ELM suppression with resonant magnetic perturbations is now routinely achieved reaching transiently . This gives new insight into the field penetration physics, in particular with respect to plasma flows. Modelling agrees well with plasma response measurements and a helically localised ballooning structure observed prior to the ELM is evidence for the changed edge stability due to the magnetic perturbations. The impact of 3D perturbations on heat load patterns and fast-ion losses have been further elaborated. Progress has also been made in understanding the ELM cycle itself. Here, new fast measurements of and Er allow for inter ELM transport analysis confirming that Er is dominated by the diamagnetic term even for fast timescales. New analysis techniques allow detailed comparison of the ELM crash and are in good agreement with nonlinear MHD modelling. The observation of accelerated ions during the ELM crash can be seen as evidence for the reconnection during the ELM. As type-I ELMs (even mitigated) are likely not a viable operational regime in DEMO studies of 'natural' no ELM regimes have been extended. Stable I-modes up to have been characterised using -feedback. Core physics has been advanced by more detailed characterisation of the turbulence with new measurements such as the eddy tilt angle—measured for the first time—or the cross-phase angle of and fluctuations. These new data put strong constraints on gyro-kinetic turbulence modelling. In addition, carefully executed studies in different main species (H, D and He) and with different heating mixes highlight the importance of the collisional energy exchange for interpreting energy confinement. A new regime with a hollow profile now gives access to regimes mimicking aspects of burning plasma conditions and lead to nonlinear interactions of energetic particle modes despite the sub-Alfvénic beam energy. This will help to validate the fast-ion codes for predicting ITER and DEMO. 8. Overview of ASDEX upgrade results

Abstract

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. Since 2015, AUG is equipped with a new pair of 3-strap ICRF antennas, which were designed for a reduction of tungsten release during ICRF operation. As predicted, a factor two reduction on the ICRF-induced W plasma content could be achieved by the reduction of the sheath voltage at the antenna limiters via the compensation of the image currents of the central and side straps in the antenna frame. There are two main operational scenario lines in AUG. Experiments with low collisionality, which comprise current drive, ELM mitigation/suppression and fast ion physics, are mainly done with freshly boronized walls to reduce the tungsten influx at these high edge temperature conditions. Full ELM suppression and non-inductive operation up to a plasma current of Ip = 0.8 MA could be obtained at low plasma density. Plasma exhaust is studied under conditions of high neutral divertor pressure and separatrix electron density, where a fresh boronization is not required. Substantial progress could be achieved for the understanding of the confinement degradation by strong D puffing and the improvement with nitrogen or carbon seeding. Inward/outward shifts of the electron density profile relative to the temperature profile effect the edge stability via the pressure profile changes and lead to improved/decreased pedestal performance. Seeding and D gas puffing are found to effect the core fueling via changes in a region of high density on the high field side (HFSHD). The integration of all above mentioned operational scenarios will be feasible and naturally obtained in a large device where the edge is more opaque for neutrals and higher plasma temperatures provide a lower collisionality. The combination of exhaust control with pellet fueling has been successfully demonstrated. High divertor enrichment values of nitrogen EN ≥ 10 have been obtained during pellet injection, which is a prerequisite for the simultaneous achievement of good core plasma purity and high divertor radiation levels. Impurity accumulation observed in the all-metal AUG device caused by the strong neoclassical inward transport of tungsten in the pedestal is expected to be relieved by the higher neoclassical temperature screening in larger devices.

Abstract

Tokamks are toroidal devices where a hot plasma is magnetically confined in order to produce energy from nuclear fusion reactions. However, several issues have to be resolved before achieving commercial capabilities. Among them are disruptions, which are undesired fast plasma terminations leading to large heat fluxes on plasma facing components (PFC) as well as electromagnetic forces on the machine. In addition disruptions might lead to the formation of Runaway Electrons (RE) which are electrons having an energy high enough that the collision drag does not counterbalance the electric (E) field acceleration. These electrons can therefore reach large kinetic energies (∼10MeV) and tend to form a beam, capable to carry a considerable fraction of the plasma current and, if strikes PFC, to cause substantial melting or sputtering. Therefore, the understanding of RE generation mechanisms is desirable for avoiding their formation. In this perspective, this thesis, investigates the electron dynamics during the disruption thermal quench (TQ) phase (phase characterised by a sudden loss of plasma confinement). In this respect, a relativistic particle tracker is introduced in the JOREK 3D non-linear magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code and applied to analyse the dynamics of test electrons in a simulation of a JET disruption triggered by massive gas injection. This tracker integrates relativistic particle trajectories, with either a Full Orbit or a Guiding Center approach, in JOREK numerical 3D time-varying fields and it was successfully tested and benchmarked. We firstly study the electron transport caused by the TQ chaotic magnetic field. For doing so, test electron populations are initialised in the pre-TQ with different energies and radial positions, and evolved until the CQ onset. Collisions and inductive E-field are neglected in these simulations. Results show that at least a few percent of the initial population remain confined throughout the TQ, whatever the initial energy. This is due to the fact that closed magnetic flux surfaces reappear promptly after the completely stochastic magnetic field characterising the simulated TQ. These findings seem to support the possibility of the mechanism. Secondly, a possible RE generation during the TQ are investigated. Indeed, the strong TQ MHD activity generates (at least in the simulation) an intense parallel electric field capable of creating RE. This study required the introduction of a drag force modelling the effects of Coulomb collisions. An analysis of the parallel (to the magnetic field) E and of the drag force fields shows that the drag dominates the pre-TQ and CQ phases for 1keV electron populations, i.e. typical pre-TQ thermal electrons, while the E field is predominant during the TQ for energies >∼1keV and during the whole disruptions for energies >10keV. Test particle simulations show, for a population initialised at 1keV, that the TQ E-field accelerates a small number of electrons to energies high enough for later becoming RE due to the CQ E-field, for those of them which reconfined by the reformation of closed flux surfaces. However, results are not in quantitative agreement with the experimental measurements, possibly due to differences between simulated and experimental plasma parameters. For example, higher than realistic JOREK plasma resistivity is found to increase the RE production in these simulations. Finally, first experimental data analyses of the interactions between CQ MHD activity and the RE beam current in ASDEX Upgrade suggest that the RE current decreases with some indicators of the intensity of MHD activity. A possible interpretation is that the MHD activity deconfines the electrons and thereby reduces RE formation., Les tokamaks sont des machines toroïdales qui confinent un plasma chaud pour générer des réactions de fusion nucléaire. Une des problématiques de ces réacteurs sont les disruptions, qui sont des terminaisons rapides et non désirées du plasma conduisant parfois à l’apparition d’Electrons Découplés (ED). Ceux-ci sont des électrons ayant une vitesse suffisamment grande pour que la traînée collisionelle soit incapable de contrebalancer l’accélération due au champ électrique (E) présent lors de la disruption. Ils atteignent ainsi des hautes énergies (∼10 MeV), et tendent à former un faisceau portant un fort courant (∼100 kA), qui, s’il vient à impacter les CFP, peut causer une fusion ou une pulvérisation conséquente. Par conséquent, la compréhension de la physique des ED est désirable pour prévenir leur formation ou les supprimer sans dégâts. Dans cette perspective, cette thèse présente une étude sur la dynamique des électrons pendant la phase dite de Disjonction Thermique (DT) d’une disruption (phase caractérisée par une perte quasi-totale de confinement thermique). A cette fin, un traceur de particules a été implémenté dans le code de magnétohydrodynamique (MHD) non-linéaire 3D JOREK. Celui-ci permet d’intégrer les trajectoires des particules relativistes, avec une approche orbite complète ou centre guide, dans les champs numériques 3D et dépendant du temps calculés par JOREK. Après vérification, le traceur a été utilisé pour investiguer la dynamique des électrons dans une simulation JOREK de disruption déclenchée par injection massive de gaz dans JET. On a investigué d’abord les dépendances énergie et position radiale du transport des électrons dans la DT. Dans cette simulation, cette phase est caractérisée par un champ magnétique (B) complètement chaotique pendant une brève période, ce qui tend à fortement déconfiner les électrons. Il a néanmoins été constaté que, indépendamment de l’énergie initiale, quelques % des populations initiales ‘survivent’ à la DT du fait de la reformation rapide des surfaces magnétiques fermées. Ces résultats semblent soutenir la possibilité du mécanisme de génération d’ED dit de ‘queue chaude’. Ensuite, une investigation concernant la génération des ED par des champs E intenses dus aux fluctuations MHD au moment de la DT a été conduite. Après l’introduction d’une force de traînée modélisant les collisions Coulombiennes des électrons, les champs de traînée et de E parallèle (au champ B) ont été comparés. Cela a révélé que, à des énergies thermiques pré-disruptives (∼1keV), la traînée est dominante et empêche l’accélération d’électrons à la fois avant et après la DT. Par contre, pendant la DT ou à des énergies >∼10 keV, le champ E domine et la génération des ED devient envisageable. Cette possibilité a été étudiée par des simulations de suivi des particules qui ont montré, pour des électrons initialisés à 1keV avant la DT, qu’une fraction de la population initiale est accélérée pendant la DT de façon modérée mais suffisante pour qu’ils soient découplés pendant la DC, après avoir été reconfinés (pour une partie d’entre eux) par la reformation des surfaces magnétiques fermées. Cependant, les simulations surestiment la génération des ED car ils n’ont pas été observés dans l’expérience simulée. Le désaccord pourrait venir des paramètres utilisés dans les simulations JOREK qui ne sont pas tous réalistes. L’utilisation d’un paramètre de résistivité plasma plus grand que la réalité notamment (pour des raisons numériques), semble conduire à une surestimation de la production d’ED. Enfin, une étude des données expérimentales d’ASDEX Upgrade est présentée et montre que le courant maximal des faisceaux d’ED semble être limité par l’intensité de l’activité MHD de la DC. Une interprétation possible est que l’activité MHD déconfine les électrons et réduit donc la formation d’ED, en accord qualitatif avec les simulations JOREK.

Experiments with low collisionality, which comprise current drive, ELM mitigation/suppression and fast ion physics, are mainly done with freshly boronized walls to reduce the tungsten influx at these high edge temperature conditions. Full ELM suppression and non-inductive operation up to a plasma current of Ip = 0.8 MA could be obtained at low plasma density. Plasma exhaust is studied under conditions of high neutral divertor pressure and separatrix electron density, where a fresh boronization is not required. Substantial progress could be achieved for the understanding of the confinement degradation by strong D puffing and the improvement with nitrogen or carbon seeding. Inward/outward shifts of the electron density profile relative to the temperature profile effect the edge stability via the pressure profile changes and lead to improved/decreased pedestal performance. Seeding and D gas puffing are found to effect the core fueling via changes in a region of high density on the high field side (HFSHD). The integration of all above mentioned operational scenarios will be feasible and naturally obtained in a large device where the edge is more opaque for neutrals and higher plasma temperatures provide a lower collisionality. The combination of exhaust control with pellet fueling has been successfully demonstrated. High divertor enrichment values of nitrogen EN 10 have been obtained during pellet injection, which is a prerequisite for the simultaneous achievement of good core plasma purity and high divertor radiation levels. Impurity accumulation observed in the all-metal AUG device caused by the strong neoclassical inward transport of tungsten in the pedestal is expected to be relieved by the higher neoclassical temperature screening in larger devices. Abstract

Recent experiments on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak aim at improving the physics base for ITER and DEMO to aid the machine design and prepare efficient operation. Type I edge localized mode (ELM) mitigation using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) has been shown at low pedestal collisionality ( ν ∗ ped < 0 . 4 ) . In contrast to the previous high ν ∗ regime, suppression only occurs in a narrow RMP spectral window, indicating a resonant process, and a concomitant confinement drop is observed due to a reduction of pedestal top density and electron temperature. Strong evidence is found for the ion heat flux to be the decisive element for the L–H power threshold. A physics based scaling of the density at which the minimum P LH occurs indicates that ITER could take advantage of it to initiate H-mode at lower density than that of the final Q = 10 operational point. Core density fluctuation measurements resolved in radius and wave number show that an increase of R/L T e introduced by off-axis electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) mainly increases the large scale fluctuations. The radial variation of the fluctuation level is in agreement with simulations using the GENE code. Fast particles are shown to undergo classical slowing down in the absence of large scale magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) events and for low heating power, but show signs of anomalous radial redistribution at large heating power, consistent with a broadened off-axis neutral beam current drive current profile under these conditions. Neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) suppression experiments using electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) with feedback controlled deposition have allowed to test several control strategies for ITER, including automated control of (3,2) and (2,1) NTMs during a single discharge. Disruption mitigation studies using massive gas injection (MGI) can show an increased fuelling efficiency with high field side injection, but a saturation of the fuelling efficiency is observed at high injected mass as needed for runaway electron suppression. Large locked modes can significantly decrease the fuelling efficiency and increase the asymmetry of radiated power during MGI mitigation. Concerning power exhaust, the partially detached ITER divertor scenario has been demonstrated at P sep /R = 10 MW m − 1 in ASDEX Upgrade, with a peak time averaged target load around 5MWm − 2 , well consistent with the component limits for ITER. Developing this towards DEMO, full detachment was achieved at P sep /R = 7MWm − 1 and stationary discharges with core radiation fraction of the order of DEMO requirements (70% instead of the 30% needed for ITER) were demonstrated. Finally, it remains difficult to establish the standard ITER Q = 10 scenario at low q 95 = 3 in the all-tungsten (all-W) ASDEX Upgrade due to the observed poor confinement at low β N . This is mainly due to a degraded pedestal performance and hence investigations at shifting the operational point to higher β N by lowering the current have been started. At higher q 95 , pedestal performance can be recovered by seeding N 2 as well as CD 4 , which is interpreted as improved pedestal stability due to the decrease of bootstrap current with increasing Z eff . Concerning advanced scenarios, the upgrade of ECRH power has allowed experiments with central ctr-ECCD to modify the q -profile in improved H-mode scenarios, showing an increase in confinement at still good MHD stability with flat elevated q -profiles at values between 1.5 and 2. Abstract

ASDEX Upgrade was operated with a fully W-covered wall in 2007 and 2008. Stationary H-modes at the ITER target values and improved H-modes with H up to 1.2 were run without any boronization. The boundary conditions set by the full W wall (high enough ELM frequency, high enough central heating and low enough power density arriving at the target plates) require significant scenario development, but will apply to ITER as well. D retention has been reduced and stationary operation with saturated wall conditions has been found. Concerning confinement, impurity ion transport across the pedestal is neoclassical, explaining the strong inward pinch of high-Z impurities in between ELMs. In improved H-mode, the width of the temperature pedestal increases with heating power, consistent with a β1/2pol,ped scaling. In the area of MHD instabilities, disruption mitigation experiments using massive Ne injection reach volume averaged values of the total electron density close to those required for runaway suppression in ITER. ECRH at the q = 2 surface was successfully applied to delay density limit disruptions. The characterization of fast particle losses due to MHD has shown the importance of different loss mechanisms for NTMs, TAEs and also beta-induced Alfven eigenmodes (BAEs). Specific studies addressing the first ITER operational phase show that O1 ECRH at the HFS assists reliable low-voltage breakdown. During ramp-up, additional heating can be used to vary li to fit within the ITER range. Confinement and power threshold in He are more favourable than in H, suggesting that He operation could allow us to assess H-mode operation in the non-nuclear phase of ITER operation.

Abstract

The main physics results achieved in the recent years in the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU) are reviewed. The main focus of research has been the development of performance plasmas at high densities (up to 4 X 10(20) m(-3)), high magnetic field (up to 8 T) and plasma current (up to 1.6 MA), that are therefore in a domain of relevance for burning physics experiments such as ITER. The main tools consist in the development of plasma conditioning techniques and the use of various electron heating and current drive systems. Improved confinement regimes have been developed, including (a) the production of steady electron internal transport barriers at high density and electron temperature (up to central electron temperature of 11 keV at a central density of 0.9 x 10(20) m(3)), (b) the production of repetitive pellet enhanced plasma modes with deep pellet deposition leading to a substantial increase of the neutron yield (and a record FTU value of the fusion product n(i)T(i)tau(E) up to 0.8 x 10(20) m(-3) keV(.) s), and (c) the production of radiation improved modes at high magnetic field. Main results on the supporting physics program will also be given in the domain of plasma wave physics (lower hybrid current drive, electron cyclotron resonance frequency, ion Bernstein waves), heat and impurities transport, and magnetohydrodynamic studies.

Abstract

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. Since 2015, AUG is equipped with a new pair of 3-strap ICRF antennas, which were designed for a reduction of tungsten release during ICRF operation. As predicted, a factor two reduction on the ICRF-induced W plasma content could be achieved by the reduction of the sheath voltage at the antenna limiters via the compensation of the image currents of the central and side straps in the antenna frame. There are two main operational scenario lines in AUG. Experiments with low collisionality, which comprise current drive, ELM mitigation/suppression and fast ion physics, are mainly done with freshly boronized walls to reduce the tungsten influx at these high edge temperature conditions. Full ELM suppression and non-inductive operation up to a plasma current of I p = 0.8 MA could be obtained at low plasma density. Plasma exhaust is studied under conditions of high neutral divertor pressure and separatrix electron density, where a fresh boronization is not required. Substantial progress could be achieved for the understanding of the confinement degradation by strong D puffing and the improvement with nitrogen or carbon seeding. Inward/outward shifts of the electron density profile relative to the temperature profile effect the edge stability via the pressure profile changes and lead to improved/decreased pedestal performance. Seeding and D gas puffing are found to effect the core fueling via changes in a region of high density on the high field side (HFSHD). The integration of all above mentioned operational scenarios will be feasible and naturally obtained in a large device where the edge is more opaque for neutrals and higher plasma temperatures provide a lower collisionality. The combination of exhaust control with pellet fueling has been successfully demonstrated. High divertor enrichment values of nitrogen E N ⩾ 10 have been obtained during pellet injection, which is a prerequisite for the simultaneous achievement of good core plasma purity and high divertor radiation levels. Impurity accumulation observed in the all-metal AUG device caused by the strong neoclassical inward transport of tungsten in the pedestal is expected to be relieved by the higher neoclassical temperature screening in larger devices.
