1. n_TOF: Measurements of Key Reactions of Interest to AGB Stars

Abstract

In the last 20 years, the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN has been providing relevant data for the astrophysical slow neutron capture process (s process). At n_TOF, neutron-induced radiative capture (n,γ) as well as (n,p) and (n,α) reaction cross sections are measured as a function of energy, using the time-of-flight method. Improved detection systems, innovative ideas and collaborations with other neutron facilities have lead to a considerable contribution of the n_TOF collaboration to studying the s process in asymptotic giant branch stars. Results have been reported for stable and radioactive samples, i.e., 24,25,26Mg, 26Al, 33S, 54,57Fe, 58,59,62,63Ni, 70,72,73Ge, 90,91,92,93,94,96Zr, 139La, 140Ce, 147Pm, 151Sm, 154,155,157Gd, 171Tm, 186,187,188Os, 197Au, 203,204Tl, 204,206,207Pb and 209Bi isotopes, while others are being studied or planned to be studied in the near future. In this contribution, we present an overview of the most successful achievements, and an outlook of future challenging measurements, including ongoing detection system developments.

Abstract

The isotope used in this research was supplied by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science by the Isotope Program in the Office of Nuclear Physics., The neutron capture cross section of 154Gd was measured from 1 eV to 300 keV in the experimental area located 185 m from the CERN n_TOF neutron spallation source, using a metallic sample of gadolinium, enriched to 67% in 154Gd. The capture measurement, performed with four C6D6 scintillation detectors, has been complemented by a transmission measurement performed at the GELINA time-of-flight facility (JRC-Geel), thus minimising the uncertainty related to sample composition. An accurate Maxwellian averaged capture cross section (MACS) was deduced over the temperature range of interest for s process nucleosynthesis modelling. We report a value of 880(50) mb for the MACS at kT = 30 keV, significantly lower compared to values available in literature. Abstract

73Ge(n, γ) cross sections were measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN up to neutron energies of 300keV, providing for the first time experimental data above 8keV. Results indicate that the stellar cross section at kT=30keV is 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than most theoretical predictions. The new cross sections result in a substantial decrease of 73Ge produced in stars, which would explain the low isotopic abundance of 73Ge in the solar system., This work was supported by the Austrian Science Fund FWF (J3503), the Adolf Messer Foundation (Germany), the UK Science and Facilities Council (ST/M006085/1), and the European Research Council ERC-2015-StG Nr.677497.

Abstract

73Ge(n,γ) cross sections were measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN up to neutron energies of 300 keV, providing for the first time experimental data above 8 keV. Results indicate that the stellar cross section at kT=30 keV is 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than most theoretical predictions. The new cross sections result in a substantial decrease of 73Ge produced in stars, which would explain the low isotopic abundance of 73Ge in the solar system.

This work reports on accurate, high-resolution measurements of the $^{25}$Mg($n, \gamma$)$^{26}$Mg and $^{25}$Mg($n, tot$) cross sections in the neutron energy range from thermal to about 300 keV, leading to a significantly improved $^{25}$Mg($n, \gamma$)$^{26}$Mg parametrization. The relevant resonances for $n+^{25}$Mg were characterized from a combined R-matrix analysis of the experimental data. This resulted in an unambiguous spin/parity assignment of the corresponding excited states in $^{26}$Mg. With this information experimental upper limits of the reaction rates for $^{22}$Ne($\alpha, n$)$^{25}$Mg and $^{22}$Ne($\alpha, \gamma$)$^{26}$Mg were established, potentially leading to a significantly higher ($\alpha, n$)/($\alpha, \gamma$) ratio than previously evaluated. Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections are the key nuclear physics input to study the slow neutron capture process, which is responsible for forming about half of the elemental abundances above Fe. Stellar neutron capture cross section can be measured by the time-of-flight technique, or by activation. Both techniques will be discussed and recent experiments in the Fe/Ni mass region will be presented.

Abstract

In this paper we present a large-scale sensitivity study of reaction rates in the main component of the $s$ process. The aim of this study is to identify all rates, which have a global effect on the $s$ process abundance distribution and the three most important rates for the production of each isotope. We have performed a sensitivity study on the radiative $^{13}$C-pocket and on the convective thermal pulse, sites of the $s$ process in AGB stars. We identified 22 rates, which have the highest impact on the $s$-process abundances in AGB stars., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The beta-decay of Re-187 (t(1/2) = 42.3 Gyr) represents a suited cosmo-chronometer for the age of the r-process abundances, since the radiogenic part of the daughter isotope (OS)-O-187 is defined by the difference between the solar Os-187 abundance and s-process contribution to Os-187. The latter component can be determined via the s-process systematics based on the stellar neutron capture cross sections of Os-186 and Os-187. The laboratory cross section of Os-187 requires a significant correction for the effect of the low-lying excited state at 9.75 keV, which is strongly populated under stellar conditions. This theoretical correction can be improved by an experimental cross section for inelastic scattering to the 9.75 keV state. High resolution time-of-flight measurements of (n, gamma) cross sections of (OS)-O-186,187,188 from I eV to I MeV at CERN n-TOF facility are reported. The inferred stellar cross sections differ from previously recommended values. In addition, the inelastic scattering cross section has been measured at 30 keV neutron energy via time-of-flight at the Karlsruhe 3.7 MV Van de Graaff. Abstract

See paper for full list of authors; Neutron capture cross sections in the keV neutron energy region are the key nuclear physics input to study the astrophysical slow neutron capture process. In the past years, a series of neutron capture cross section measurements has been performed at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN focussing on the Fe/Ni mass region. Recent results and future developments in the neutron time-of-flight technique are discussed.

Abstract

The $^{58}$Ni $(n,\gamma)$ cross section has been measured at the neutron time of flight facility n_TOF at CERN, in the energy range from 27 meV up to 400 keV. In total, 51 resonances have been analyzed up to 122 keV. Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS) have been calculated for stellar temperatures of kT$=$5-100 keV with uncertainties of less than 6%, showing fair agreement with recent experimental and evaluated data up to kT = 50 keV. The MACS extracted in the present work at 30 keV is 34.2$\pm$0.6$_\mathrm{stat}\pm$1.8$_\mathrm{sys}$ mb, in agreement with latest results and evaluations, but 12% lower relative to the recent KADoNIS compilation of astrophysical cross sections. When included in models of the s-process nucleosynthesis in massive stars, this change results in a 60% increase of the abundance of $^{58}$Ni, with a negligible propagation on heavier isotopes. The reason is that, using both the old or the new MACS, 58Ni is efficiently depleted by neutron captures., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

The cross section of the Ni-62(n,gamma) reaction was measured with the time-of-flight technique at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture kernels of 42 resonances were analyzed up to 200 keV neutron energy and Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS) from kT = 5-100 keV were calculated. With a total uncertainty of 4.5%, the stellar cross section is in excellent agreement with the the KADoNiS compilation at kT = 30 keV, while being systematically lower up to a factor of 1.6 at higher stellar temperatures. The cross section of the Ni-63(n,gamma) reaction was measured for the first time at n_TOF. We determined unresolved cross sections from 10 to 270 keV with a systematic uncertainty of 17%. These results provide fundamental constraints on s-process production of heavier species, especially the production of Cu in massive stars, which serve as the dominant source of Cu in the solar system.

Abstract

We have measured the neutron capture cross sections of the stable magnesium isotopes 24,25,26Mg in the energy range of interest to the s process using the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture events from a natural metal sample and from samples enriched in 25Mg and 26Mg were recorded using the total energy method based on C6 2H6 detectors. Neutron resonance parameters were extracted by a simultaneous resonance shape analysis of the present capture data and existing transmission data on a natural isotopic sample. Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections for the three isotopes were calculated up to thermal energies of 100 keV and their impact on s-process analyses was investigated. At 30 keV the new values of the stellar cross section for 24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg are 3.8±0.2 mb, 4.1±0.6 mb, and 0.14±0.01 mb, respectively.

Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections are the key nuclear physics input to understand nucleosynthesis of the slow neutron capture process (s process). At the neutron time of flight facility n_TOF at CERN neutron capture cross sections of astrophysical interest are measured over a wide energy range. A measurement campaign to determine the stellar (n ; g ) cross sections of Fe and Ni isotopes is currently being pursued. First results on the stellar cross section of 62Ni(n ; g ) confirm previous experimental results. The cross section of the radioactive s-process branching 63Ni was measured for the first time at stellar energies and is about a factor of 2 higher than theoretical predictions. Future facilities and upgrades will allow to access a number of other radioactive nuclides which are crucial for understanding physical conditions of s-process environments.

Abstract

Heavy elements with Z ≥ 30 are made by neutron capture reactions during stellar He burning and presumably in supernovae. This contribution deals mainly with the slow neutron capture (s) process which is responsible for about one half of the abundances in the mass region between Fe and Bi. The slow time scale implies that the reaction path of this process involves mostly stable isotopes which can be studied in detail in laboratory experiments. The neutron time of flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN is a neutron spallation source, its white neutron energy spectrum ranges from thermal to several MeV, covering the full energy range of interest for nuclear astrophysics, in particular for measurements of the neutron capture cross section required in s-process nucleosynthesis. This contribution gives an overview on the astrophysical program made at n_TOF facility, the results and the implications will be considered. European Commission (EC) FIKW-CT-2000-00107

Abstract

The β -decay of 187Re ( t 1 / 2 = 42.3 Gyr ) represents a suited cosmo-chronometer for the age of the r -process abundances, since the radiogenic part of the daughter isotope 187Os is defined by the difference between the solar 187Os abundance and s -process contribution to 187Os. The latter component can be determined via the s -process systematics based on the stellar neutron capture cross sections of 186Os and 187Os. The laboratory cross section of 187Os requires a significant correction for the effect of the low-lying excited state at 9.75 keV, which is strongly populated under stellar conditions. This theoretical correction can be improved by an experimental cross section for inelastic scattering to the 9.75 keV state. High resolution time-of-flight measurements of ( n , γ ) cross sections of 186,187,188Os from 1 eV to 1 MeV at CERN n_TOF facility are reported. The inferred stellar cross sections differ from previously recommended values. In addition, the inelastic scattering cross section has been measured at 30 keV neutron energy via time-of-flight at the Karlsruhe 3.7 MV Van de Graaff. Abstract

The accurate knowledge of the 151Sm(n,γ) cross section has important implications for the nuclear technologies as well as for fundamental studies. Due to its radioactivity, the only experimental data available on 151Sm were derived from a transmission measurement [1]. Nowadays thanks to the innovative features of neutron time-of-flight facility (n_TOF), it was possible to measure 151Sm(n,γ) cross section in a wide energy range and with good accuracy [2]. Abstract

Two experiments were performed to resolve a discrepancy of the 197Au(n, γ) cross section between the IAEA standard evaluation and the reference cross section for astrophysical experiments in the lower keV energy region. We measured the 197Au(n, γ) reaction by means of the time-of-flight technique with n-TOF at CERN and extracted the cross section in the unresolved resonance region between 5-400 keV with an overall uncertainty from 3.9-6.7% for a resolution of 20 bins per energy decade. Additionally, we remeasured the neutron spectrum of the 7Li(p, n) 7Be reaction with E p=1912 keV, which was used as a neutron source for determining the astrophysical reference cross section. The n-TOF data are already fully analyzed and published. The results are in good agreement with the ENDF standard evaluation, but uncertainties don't allow to draw definite conclusions. The analysis of the neutron spectrum of 7Li(p, n) 7Be is underway, preliminary results will be reported here.

Abstract

The barium isotopic anomalies found in meteoritic SiC grains are interpreted in the framework of the s-process nucleosynthesis occurring in carbon stars (type N) that suffer recurrent He shell instabilities on the asymptotic giant branch. In our calculations we use average thermal pulse conditions derived from stellar models to follow the neutron captures induced by the activation of the 13 C(α, n) 16 O reaction and (marginally) by the 22 Ne(α, n) 25 Mg one. This is done with an updated nuclear network extending from He to Po and taking into account the temperature dependence of the neutron capture cross sections. Asymptotic abundances of s-nuclei are achieved after about 15 thermal pulses

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of 154Gd was measured from 1 eV to 300 keV in the experimental area located 185 m from the CERN n_TOF neutron spallation source, using a metallic sample of gadolinium, enriched to 67% in 154Gd. The capture measurement, performed with four C6D6 scintillation detectors, has been complemented by a transmission measurement performed at the GELINA time-of-flight facility (JRC-Geel), thus minimising the uncertainty related to sample composition. An accurate Maxwellian averaged capture cross section (MACS) was deduced over the temperature range of interest for s process nucleosynthesis modelling. We report a value of 880(50) mb for the MACS at kT=30 keV, significantly lower compared to values available in literature. The new adopted 154Gd(n,γ) cross section reduces the discrepancy between observed and calculated solar s-only isotopic abundances predicted by s-process nucleosynthesis models.

Abstract

Cross section measurements have been performed at the time-of-flight facility GELINA to determine the average capture cross section for 197Au in the energy region between 3.5 keV and 84 keV. Prompt γ-rays, originating from neutron-induced capture events, were detected by two C6 D6 liquid scintillators. The sample was placed at about 13m distance from the neutron source. The total energy detection principle in combination with the pulse height weighting technique was applied. The energy dependence of the neutron flux was measured with a double Frisch-gridded ionization chamber based on the 10B(n,α) reaction. The data have been normalized to the well-isolated and saturated 197Au resonance at 4.9 eV. Special care was taken to reduce bias effects due to the weighting function, normalization, dead time and background corrections. The total uncertainty due to normalization, neutron flux and weighting function is 1.0%. An additional uncertainty of 0.5% results from the correction for self-shielding and multiple interaction events. Fluctuations due to resonance structures have been studied by complementary measurements at a 30m flight path station. The results reported in this work deviate systematically by more than 5% from the cross section that is recommended as a reference for astrophysical applications. They are about 2% lower compared to an evaluation of the 197Au(n, γ) cross section, which was based on a least squares fit of experimental data available in the literature prior to this work. The average capture cross section as a function of neutron energy has been parameterized in terms of average resonance parameters. Maxwellian average cross sections at different temperatures have been calculated.

Abstract

73Ge(n,γ) cross sections were measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN up to neutron energies of 300 keV, providing for the first time experimental data above 8 keV. Results indicate that the stellar cross section at kT=30 keV is 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than most theoretical predictions. The new cross sections result in a substantial decrease of 73Ge produced in stars, which would explain the low isotopic abundance of 73Ge in the solar system.
