Instruction cues are widely employed for research on neural mechanisms during movement preparation. However, their influence on brain connectivity during movement has not received much attention. Herein, 15 healthy subjects completed two experimental tasks including either instructed or voluntary movements; meanwhile electroencephalogram (EEG) data were synchronously recorded. Based on source analysis and related literature, six movement-related brain regions were selected, including the left/right supplementary motor area (SMA), left/right inferior frontal gyrus (iFg), and left/right postcentral gyrus (pCg). After assuming 10 a priori models of regional brain connectivity, we evaluated the optimal connectivity model between brain regions for the two scenarios using the dynamic causality model (DCM). During voluntary movement, the movement originated in the SMA, passed through the iFg of the prefrontal lobe, and then returned to the main sensory cortex of the pCg. In the instructed movement, the movement originated in the iFg, and then was transmitted to the pCg and the SMA, as well as from the pCg to the SMA. In contrast to the preparation process of voluntary movement, there were long-range information interactions between the iFg and pCg. Further, almost the same brain regions were active during movement preparation under both voluntary and instructed movement tasks, which evidences certain similarities in dynamic brain connectivity, that is, the brain has direct connections between the bilateral SMA, bilateral pCg, and bilateral SMA, indicating that the both brain hemispheres work together during the movement preparation phase. The results suggest that the network during the preparation process of instructed movements is more complex than voluntary movements.

The maritime environment is significantly different compared with the terrestrial environment, which will inevitably have a certain impact on the brain functional activities of sailors and lead to differential changes in the brain functional connectivity (FC). Therefore, it has a great significance to explore the impact of the marine environment on the brain functional activities of sailors. It is not only the need for more detailed research work of sailors, but also an inevitable requirement for accurately revealing the impact of the marine environment. In this paper, the functional magnetic resonance image data of 33 sailors before and after sailing were used to study the brain FCs changes of sailors at the activated voxels level, in which the activated voxels were obtained by independent component analysis combined with Anatomical Automatic Labelling template. Then, the FCs between the corresponding brain regions of these activated voxels were statistically analyzed to obtain the FCs with significant differences (DFCs) between sailors before and after sailing. Finally, the classification evaluation of sailors before and after sailing was realized by using the FCs and DFCs as the characteristic samples in support vector machine. The results indicated that the DFCs between the activated brain regions had better discriminative performance for sailors before and after sailing, especially for the FCs within Prefrontal lobe and Occipital lobe as well as those between them which showed a significant difference between sailors before and after sailing.

Taking different types of addictive drugs such as methamphetamine, heroin, and mixed drugs causes brain functional Changes. Based on the prefrontal functional near-infrared spectroscopy, this study was designed with an experimental paradigm that included the induction of resting and drug addiction cravings. Hemoglobin concentrations of 30 drug users (10 on methamphetamine, 10 on heroin, and 10 on mixed type) were collected. For these three types of individuals, the convolutional neural networks (CNN) was designed to classify eight Brodmann areas and the entire prefrontal area, and the average accuracy of the three classifications on each functional area was obtained. As a result, the classification accuracy was lower on the left side than on the right in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of the drug users, while it was higher on the left than on the right in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC), frontopolar prefrontal cortex (FPC), and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). Then the differences in eight functional areas between the three types of individuals were statistically analyzed, and results showed significant differences in the right VLPFC and right OFC.

The purpose of this work was to use near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) to investigate the spectral characteristics and frontal lobe activation in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) during a verbal fluency task. Thirty-seven patients with OCD, who met the diagnostic criteria of International Classification of Diseases 10 (ICD-10), were recruited. The total score of the Symptom Checklist (SCL-90, grade 1-5) was ≥160 points. The total score of the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale was ≥7 points. The changes in frontal lobe blood flow were measured by NIRS when completing a verbal fluency task. Then, the differences between obsessive-compulsive thoughts and obsessive-compulsive behaviors in OCD, and the concentration variation of oxygenate hemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) and deoxygenate hemoglobin (Deoxy-Hb) were investigated. Background. Drastic functional reorganization was observed in the ipsilateral primary motor cortex (M1) of a Paralympic long jumper with a unilateral below-knee amputation in our previous study. However, it remains unclear whether long-term para-sports are associated with ipsilateral M1 reorganization since only 1 athlete with amputation was investigated. Objective. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the long-term para-sports and ipsilateral M1 reorganization after lower limb amputation. Methods. Lower limb rhythmic muscle contraction tasks with functional magnetic resonance imaging and T1-weighted structural imaging were performed in 30 lower limb amputees with different para-sports experiences in the chronic phase. Results. Brain activity in the ipsilateral primary motor and somatosensory areas (SM1) as well as the contralateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, SM1, and inferior temporal gyrus showed a positive correlation with the years of routine para-sports participation (sports years) during contraction of the amputated knee. Indeed, twelve of the 30 participants who exhibited significant ipsilateral M1 activation during amputated knee contraction had a relatively longer history of para-sports participation. No significant correlation was found in the structural analysis. Conclusions. Long-term para-sports could lead to extensive reorganization at the brain network level, not only bilateral M1 reorganization but also reorganization of the frontal lobe and visual pathways. These results suggest that the interaction of injury-induced and use-dependent cortical plasticity might bring about drastic reorganization in lower limb amputees.

The global spread of COVID-19 has disrupted the normality of people’s daily lives, leading the population to social distancing and isolation. The closure of green areas also affected the well-being of the individual during the COVID-19 pandemic. Viewing flowers is expected to have similar positive effects to viewing natural scenery. Therefore, this study investigates how white, red, and yellow flower colors affect individuals’ psychological and physiological well-being. The experiment was conducted in an office-like setting with 50 participants. Participants looked at each flower color for 3 min. Electroencephalograms (EEGs), heart rate variability, and skin conductivity were measured to evaluate physiological responses along with both the semantic differential questionnaire (SD) and the Profile of Mood States (POMS) to assess psychological responses. EEGs showed that the mean values of alpha relative power in the prefrontal lobe were significantly higher when viewing yellow and red flowers vs. white flowers. Furthermore, heart rate variability revealed that viewing yellow and red flowers increased parasympathetic nerve activity significantly. After viewing the yellow and red flowers, the average results for each subscale of the POMS questionnaire improved. The vigor (V) subscale and overall mood status values were significantly improved. The results of the SD method revealed that viewing yellow and red flowers resulted in a significantly higher sense of relaxation, cheerfulness, and comfort than viewing white flowers.

Diabetics are prone to postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). The occurrence may be related to the damage of the prefrontal lobe. In this study, the prefrontal lobe was segmented based on an improved clustering algorithm in patients with diabetes, in order to evaluate the relationship between prefrontal lobe volume and COPD. In this study, a total of 48 diabetics who underwent selective noncardiac surgery were selected. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images of the patients were segmented based on the improved clustering algorithm, and their prefrontal volume was measured. The correlation between the volume of the prefrontal lobe and Z -score or blood glucose was analyzed. Qualitative analysis shows that the gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid based on the improved clustering algorithm were easy to distinguish. Quantitative evaluation results show that the proposed segmentation algorithm can obtain the optimal Jaccard coefficient and the least average segmentation time. Internet addiction is associated with an increased risk of suicidal behavior and can lead to brain dysfunction among adolescents. However, whether brain dysfunction occurs in adolescents with Internet addiction who attempt suicide remains unknown. This observational cross-sectional study enrolled 41 young Internet addicts, aged from 15 to 20 years, from the Department of Psychiatry, the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, China from January to May 2018. The participants included 21 individuals who attempted suicide and 20 individuals with Internet addiction without a suicidal attempt history. Brain images in the resting state were obtained by a 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging scanner. The results showed that activity in the gyrus frontalis inferior of the right pars triangularis and the right pars opercularis was significantly increased in the suicidal attempt group compared with the non-suicidal attempt group. In the resting state, the prefrontal lobe of adolescents who had attempted suicide because of Internet addiction exhibited functional abnormalities, which may provide a new basis for studying suicide pathogenesis in Internet addicts. The effectiveness of training prefrontal lobe function for suppressing cognitive decline or improving cognitive function has been reported. Some epidemiological studies suggested that gardening activities can contribute to suppression of cognitive decline. In our previous studies using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), we reported the possibility of frontal pole (FP) activation of healthy older adults during gardening activities in the quasi-laboratory setting. The objective of this study was to examine the impacts of a three-month continual practice of the watering task in the actual gardening settings on the FP activation of healthy older adults. The participants were 18 right-handed healthy older adults without a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or dementia (M = 71.7 years ± SD 5.0, range: 63 - 84 years) who lived independently at home. We asked the participants to continue watering at home for three months in the same way as the research task in the fNIRS measurement. After a three-month intervention, the participants’ task performance improved compared with that of pre-intervention. In addition, the Oxy-Hb values in the right lateral FP during the third trial in the post-intervention measurement were significantly greater compared with the pre-intervention measurement. This study suggested that even a gardening activity with a small number of processes such as watering, if the activity is continued for a certain period of time, can suppress the decline of the FP activation of healthy older adults. Combination of various gardening activities has the potential to be a further cognitive training for activating the FP.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an emerging brain intervention technique. However, the effects of tDCS on stroke patients are unclear. In this study, Granger Causality (GC) is used to construct brain functional networks of the tDCS group (9 cases) and the sham tDCS group (11 cases). Objective: To investigate the effects of Toll-like receptor 4 antagonist Eritrane on neurogenesis and gamma-aminobutyric acid glutamate balance in the prefrontal lobe and hippocampus of depressive rats. Methods: 100 healthy SD rats were divided into healthy control group, blank control group and Eritram group (low dose group, medium dose group and high dose group), 20 rats in each group. The depression model of rats in blank control group and Salvia miltiorrhiza group was established. After the completion of the model, rats in the blank control group were injected with normal saline and rats in the Eritrean group were injected with high, medium and low doses of Eritrean injection respectively. After 21 days of continuous administration, the total distance of spontaneous activity, the immobility time of forced swimming, the levels of gamma-aminobutyric glutamate (GABA), glutamate (Glu) and Tolllike receptor 4 (TLR-4) protein in prefrontal lobe and hippocampal neurons were measured and compared. Changes in brain metabolism are a hallmark of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Determining how AUD changes the brain proteome is critical for understanding the effects of alcohol consumption on biochemical processes in the brain. We used data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry proteomics to study differences in the abundance of proteins associated with AUD in prefrontal lobe and motor cortex from autopsy brain. AUD had a substantial effect on the overall brain proteome exceeding the inherent differences between brain regions. Proteins associated with glycolysis, trafficking, the cytoskeleton, and excitotoxicity were altered in abundance in AUD. We observed extensive changes in the abundance of key metabolic enzymes, consistent with a switch from glucose to acetate utilization in the AUD brain. We propose that metabolic adaptations allowing efficient acetate utilization contribute to ethanol dependence in AUD.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)is a brain-imaging technology used to reveal brain activity by measuring blood oxygenation. Using fNIRS we measured activity in the left prefrontal lobe of 8–14 month-old infants as they crawled or were pushed in a stroller and as they were given a passive attention task or an active executive function (EF) task. For each task, we measured peak total hemoglobin concentration and peak Oxy relative to baseline. Results revealed differences in peak Oxy levels for crawling vs. strolling and between the EF and passive cognitive tasks, with total hemoglobin greater for the EF task than the passive attention task. These results support the theoretical view that both active locomotion and EF engage the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during early development.

The supplementary motor area (SMA) syndrome is a frequently encountered clinical phenomenon associated with surgery of the dorsomedial prefrontal lobe. The region has a known motor sequencing function and the dominant pre-SMA specifically is associated with more complex language functions; the SMA is furthermore incorporated in the negative motor network. The SMA has a rich interconnectivity with other cortical regions and subcortical structures using the frontal aslant tract (FAT) and the frontostriatal tract (FST). The development of the SMA syndrome is positively correlated with the extent of resection of the SMA region, especially its medial side. This may be due to interruption of the nearby callosal association fibres as the contralateral SMA has a particular important function in brain plasticity after SMA surgery. The syndrome is characterized by a profound decrease in interhemispheric connectivity of the motor network hubs. Clinical improvement is related to increasing connectivity between the contralateral SMA region and the ipsilateral motor hubs. Overall, most patients know a full recovery of the SMA syndrome, however a minority of patients might continue to suffer from mild motor and speech dysfunction. Rarely, no recovery of neurological function after SMA region resection is reported.

The cranial PPG signal is acquired using reflectance-type cranial photoplethysmography (CPPG) sensor on prefrontal lobe for various emotions by detecting the blood volume change (plethysmography effect). First step is the development of reflectance-type optical PPG sensor using IR source and detector pair. The acquisition of signal was done on prefrontal lobe. The CPPG is captured while the subject is listening Hindi songs of various emotions. Statistical and Eigen-space features are extracted after capturing the CPPG signal. Happy and sad emotions are recognized using KNN, SVM, and ANN classifiers with different features. The accuracy of the KNN classifier is observed to be 80%, SVM classifier 60%, and ANN classifier 70%. Classification using statistical features exhibits an accuracy of 70% for KNN classifier and 60% for ANN classifier. Classification using Eigen features exhibits an accuracy of 80% for KNN classifier and 60% for ANN. Combined features (both statistical and Eigen space features) exhibit an accuracy of 70% for KNN classifier, 60% for SVM, and 70% for ANN. Analysis with these features exhibits that these features can be used for discriminating functional activity.

Background Bipolar disorder (BD) might be associated in disturbances in brain networks. However, little is known about the abnormalities in structural brain connectivity which might be related to vulnerability to BD and predictive of the emergence of manic symptoms. No previous study has investigated the effect of subthreshold syndromes on structural dysconnectivity in offspring of parents with BD (BDoff). Methods We investigated diffusion weighted images of 70 BDoff and 48 healthy controls (HC). Nineteen of the 70 BDoff had presented with subthreshold syndromes indicating a clinical high-risk (BDoff-CHR) and other 51 BDoff had no such history (BDoff-non-CHR). Global and regional network properties, rich club organization and inter-regional connectivity in BDoff and healthy controls were investigated using graph analytical methods and network-based-statistics (NBS). Results Global properties of WM networks appeared to be intact in BDoff-CHR and BDoff-non-CHR. However, decreased regional connectivity in right occipito-parietal areas and cerebellum was a common feature of both BDoff groups. Importantly, decreased interregional connectivity between nodes in right and left prefrontal regions, nodes in right prefrontal lobe and right temporal lobe and nodes in left occipital area and left cerebellum were evident in BDoff-CHR but not BDoff-non-CHR. Limitations The cross-sectional nature of the study was the main consideration. Conclusion Decreased regional connectivity in right posterior brain regions might be related to vulnerability to BD. On the other hand, interregional dysconnectivity in anterior frontal and limbic regions and left posterior brain regions might be evident in individuals genetically at risk for developing BD who had experienced subthreshold mood symptoms.

A 56-year-old woman presented with electroclinical focal seizures in the setting of hyperglycemia (808 mg/dL) and elevated HbA1c of 14.7%. She had varying seizure semiology, consisting of early forced head turn to the left, speech arrest, left facial twitching, and impaired awareness. Her seizures arose from the right frontotemporal area on EEG (figure 1). MRI showed hypointensities in the right prefrontal lobe that resolved after 6 months (figure 2).

Our aim was to identify the longitudinal changes in gray matter volume (GMV) and secondary alterations of structural covariance after pontine stroke (PS). Structural MRI and behavioral scores were obtained at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months in 11 patients with PS. Twenty healthy subjects underwent the same examination only once. We used voxel-based morphometry and seed-based structural covariance to investigate the altered GMV and structural covariance patterns. Furthermore, the associations between the GMV changes and behavioral scores were assessed. With the progression of the disease, GMV decreased significantly in the bilateral cerebellar posterior lobe (ipsilateral Crus II (CBE Crus II_IL) and contralateral Crus I (CBE Crus I_CL)), which were initially detected at the first month and then continued to decrease during the following 6 months. Based on the CBE Crus II_IL and CBE Crus I_CL as seed regions, structural covariance analysis revealed that there were more positively and negatively correlated brain regions in PS group, mainly distributed in the bilateral prefrontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, paralimbic system and cerebellum. In addition, PS group showed more additional correlations between these covariant brain regions, and the changes of GMV in these regions were correlated with behavioral scores related to motor and cognitive functions. These findings indicate that PS could lead to significant GMV atrophy in the bilateral cerebellar posterior lobe at the early stage, accompanied by anomalous structural covariance patterns with more covariant brain regions and additional structural connectivity, which may provide useful information for understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of behavioral recovery after PS.

Introduction The neural mechanism underlying decision‐making, which is an important component of executive function, is complex and not fully understood. Few studies have directly investigated the two types of decision‐making functions – under ambiguity and under risk – in patients with brain tumors in different brain regions. Methods Participants were classified into the ventral prefrontal cortex tumor group (VPFC, n = 27), the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex tumor group (DLPFC, n = 29), and matched healthy controls (HCs, n = 32). All participants were given a battery of neuropsychological tests, and they then performed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and the Game of Dice Task (GDT) to assess their decision‐making under ambiguity and under risk, respectively. Results The two patient groups performed significantly worse on attention, memory, information processing, and executive function. Additionally, patients in the DLPFC group performed significantly worse on the memory and information processing tests compared with the VPFC and HC groups. Conclusion This study found that the decision‐making functions of participants in the VPFC and DLPFC tumor groups were impaired to varying degrees. Among them, there was decision‐making impairment under ambiguity and under risk in the VPFC group, and there was decision‐making impairment under risk in the DLPFC group., The neural mechanism underlying decision‐making is complicated and not fully understood. Patients with brain tumors may be a better research focus regarding decision‐making functions. Research showed that patients with prefrontal tumor showed deficits in other several cognitive and decision‐making tasks.

Evidence suggests that the effect of heavy metals on neuroimmune cells lead to neurogenic inflammatory responses. In this study, immune cells [mast cells (MCs) and microglia] and pro-neuroinflammation cytokines (interleukin-1b and tumor necrosis factor-α) were assessed in the prefrontal lobe of rat brains exposed to thimerosal in different timeframes. A total of 108 neonatal Wistar rats were divided into three groups having three subgroups. The experimental groups received a single dose of thimerosal (300 μg/kg) postnatally at 7, 9, 11, and 15 days. The vehicle groups received similar injections of phosphate-buffered saline in a similar manner. The control groups received nothing. Samples of the prefrontal cortex were collected and prepared for stereological, immunohistochemical, and molecular studies at timeframes of 12 or 48 h (acute phase) and 8 days (subchronic phase) after the last injection. The average density of the microglia and MCs increased significantly in the experimental groups. This increase was more evident in the 48 h group. At 8 days after the last injection, there was a significant decrease in the density of the MCs compared to the 12 and 48 h groups. Alterations in pro-inflammatory cytokines were significant for all timeframes. This increase was more evident in the 48 h group after the last injection. There was a significant decrease in both neuroinflammatory cytokines at 8 days after the last injection. It was found that ethylmercury caused abnormal neurogenic inflammatory reactions and alterations in the neuroimmune cells that remained for a longer period in the brain than in the blood.

Driving fatigue is one of the primary causes of traffic accidents nowadays. It is thus imperative to develop a technique to monitor levels of driving fatigue. The emergent near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is now capable of measuring functional cerebral activities noninvasively and sensitively in terms of hemodynamic responses, shedding light on the possibility to detect signals regarding fatigue-specified cerebral activities. This work innovatively developed a NIRS device aimed at fatigue detection of drivers, and the device was designed to be portable so that it can be easily operated during driving. Moreover, the device is absolute-measure so that the data can be compared among drivers. The probe is high-density and we can visualize brain functional responses after imaging. The high sensitivity, stability, and reliabilities of our device were fully tested in the order of ink experiment, cuff experiment, and on-human test. For the in-situation on-human test, we recruited 3 taxi drivers and collected data by our device during 8 h' driving. It's found that the hemodynamics-represented cerebral activation decreased with driving duration, which indicated our device's strong potential in monitoring fatigue.

International audience; INTRODUCTION: Environmental dependency phenomena refer to the enslavement of patients' performances under the characteristics of the tasks and were first described in case of prefrontal lobe damage. Two forms of environmental dependency, executive and social, may be dissociated, which involve respectively dorsolateral and orbital prefrontal cortex (PFC) dysfunction. Schizophrenia is widely considered to be caused by PFC dysfunction, but no study to date has addressed environmental dependency in this pathology.METHODS: We compared patients (N = 17) and healthy controls (N = 28) on a task dedicated to the study of environmental dependency.RESULTS: Our results demonstrate the presence of environmental dependency in schizophrenia. Each form of environmental dependency can be highlighted independently, as previously demonstrated by studies with prefrontal patients.CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest specific prefrontal dysfunction for each subgroup of patients and demonstrate a dissociation between socio-cognitive and neurocognitive performance in schizophrenia. Additionally, we found relationships between symptomatology and environmental dependency. This pilot study supports the relevance of studying environmental dependency to highlight specific patterns of prefrontal disorders in schizophrenia, which may contribute to a better understanding of PFC dysfunction in schizophrenia.

Objective To achieve the early diagnosis of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), this paper proposes a multi-dimensional index, which combines the advantages of the multiscale fuzzy entropy (FuzzyEn) and phase locking value (PLV) based on electroencephalography (EEG). Methods The complexity and synchronization of the EEG were characterized using FuzzyEn and PLV in five frequency bands, respectively. By combining the two methods, the changes in the health of brain function were comprehensively analyzed. The extreme learning machine (ELM) method was used to classify aMCI patients based on a multi-dimensional index. Electroencephalography (EEG) can globally monitor neural activity in millisecond scale, which is critical for identifying causality of human brain functions and mechanisms. However, to obtain accurate EEG stimulation-response relationship one usually needs to repeat multiple-ten times of stimulation-response recording to average out background signals of other irreverent brain activities, making real-time monitoring difficult to be accomplished. In this study, we explored new approaches which don’t require repeats. EEG signals were recorded from subjects doing mind tasks including image formation of motor functions or emotional subjects and mathematical calculations in mind. Time stamps in EEG recording were used to mark task completion time. Signals within 300ms or 1,000ms before task completions were analyzed. Using sLoreta 3-D tracking we found that delta-wave activities were mostly located at frontal lobe or visual cortex, isolated with each other. Theta-wave activity tended to rotate around cortex with low spatial correlation. Beta-wave behaved like inquiry types of oscillations between any two regions across cortex and was consistently correlated with each other over different areas. Alpha-wave activity looked like mixture of theta and beta activities. Together with sliding window dynamic connectivity method we confirmed beta waves play key roles in linking different brain areas together for information inquiry. Theta and low Alpha are more likely playing the role of information control, integration, and image formation. With the proposed new method we demonstrated reproducible linkages of subject behaviors with 3-D tracing characteristics along the 3 categories: emotion, math calculation, and motor functions without using event repeats.

OBJECTIVE Surgery for frontal lobe epilepsy remains a challenge because of the variable seizure outcomes after surgery. Disconnective procedures are increasingly applied to isolate the epileptogenic focus and avoid complications related to extensive brain resection. Previously, the authors described the anterior quadrant disconnection procedure to treat large frontal lobe lesions extending up to but not involving the primary motor cortex. In this article, they describe a surgical technique for unilateral disconnection of the prefrontal cortex, while providing an accurate description of the surgical and functional anatomy of this disconnective procedure. METHODS The authors report the surgical treatment of a 5-month-old boy who presented with refractory epilepsy due to extensive cortical dysplasia of the left prefrontal lobe. In addition, with the aim of both describing the subcortical intrinsic anatomy and illustrating the different connections between the prefrontal lobe and the rest of the brain, the authors dissected six human cadaveric brain hemispheres. These dissections were performed from lateral to medial and from medial to lateral to reveal the various tracts sectioned during the three different steps in the surgery, namely the intrafrontal disconnection, anterior callosotomy, and frontobasal disconnection. RESULTS The first step of the dissection involves cutting the U-fibers. During the anterior intrafrontal disconnection, the superior longitudinal fasciculus in the depth of the middle frontal gyrus, the uncinate fasciculus, and the inferior frontooccipital fasciculus in the depth of the inferior frontal gyrus at the level of the anterior insular point are visualized and sectioned, followed by sectioning of the anterior limb of the internal capsule. Once the frontal horn is reached, the anterior callosotomy can be performed to disconnect the genu and the rostrum of the corpus callosum. The intrafrontal disconnection is deepened toward the falx, and at the medial surface, the cingulum is sectioned. The frontobasal disconnection involves cutting the anterior limb of the anterior commissure. CONCLUSIONS This technique allows selective isolation of the epileptogenic focus located in the prefrontal lobe to avoid secondary propagation. Understanding the surface and white matter fiber anatomy is essential to safely perform the procedure and obtain a favorable seizure outcome.

White matter fiber tracts demonstrate heterogeneous vulnerabilities to aging effects. Here, we estimated age-related differences in tract properties using UK Biobank diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data of 7167 47- to 76-year-old neurologically healthy people (3368 men and 3799 women). Tract properties in terms of generalized fractional anisotropy, axial diffusivity, radial diffusivity, and mean diffusivity were sampled on 76 fiber tracts; for each tract, age-related differences were estimated by fitting these indices against age in a linear model. This cross-sectional study demonstrated 4 age-difference patterns. The dominant pattern was lower generalized fractional anisotropy and higher axial diffusivity, radial diffusivity, and mean diffusivity with age, constituting 45 of 76 tracts, mostly involving the association, projection, and commissure fibers connecting the prefrontal lobe. The other 3 patterns constituted only 14 tracts, with atypical age differences in diffusion indices, and mainly involved parietal, occipital, and temporal cortices. By analyzing the large volume of diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data available from the UK Biobank, the study has provided a detailed description of heterogeneous age-related differences in tract properties over the whole brain which generally supports the myelodegeneration hypothesis.

Emotional labor is characterized by two main regulation strategies: surface acting and deep acting. However, which strategy consumes more energy? To explore this, we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure changes in hemoglobin density while participants performed a task requiring them to make the opposite emotional facial expression of that presented in a picture. We found that (1) neither surface nor deep acting led to a significant change in hemoglobin concentration in the prefrontal cortex; (2) making negative and positive facial expressions activated the same left front and middle areas of the prefrontal cortex; and (3) making positive facial expressions activated the rear portion of the prefrontal cortex, but making negative facial expressions did not. Based on these findings and past work, we can infer that deep and surface acting may not significantly differ in terms of the activity in the prefrontal cortex energy consumed. Furthermore, engaging in positive and negative emotional labor appear to utilize some of the same neurological mechanisms, although they differ in others.

Epileptogenic focus resection is less effective for the treatment of frontal lobe epilepsy compared with temporal lobe epilepsy. However, there is currently a lack of effective therapeutic options for patients with frontal lobe epilepsy who are unsuitable for epileptogenic focus resection (such patients with epileptogenic foci in one frontal lobe in which the precise epileptic foci cannot be determined), or who experience recurrent epilepsy following epileptogenic focus resection. The present study reports a patient with frontal lobe epilepsy who underwent successful frontal lobe isolation surgery following a previous unsuccessful epileptogenic focus resection surgery. To ensure complete isolation of the prefrontal lobe, the surgery included division of the anterior commissure and the anterior part of the corpus callosum. The patient was followed-up for 16 months. Although the follow-up electroencephalogram presented a number of sharp waves on the affected side, the patient did not experience any seizures. The results suggest that prefrontal lobe isolation is an effective method of treating frontal lobe epilepsy, as division of the anterior commissure and the anterior part of the corpus callosum ensures disconnection of the prefrontal lobe from other regions of the brain.

Background: A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that cerebrovascular function abnormality plays a key role in occurrence and worsening of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Reduction of cerebral blood flow (CBF) is a sensitive marker to early perfusion deficiencies in AD. As one of the most important therapies in complementary and alternative medicine, manual acupuncture (MA) has been used in the treatment of AD. However, the moderating effect of MA on CBF remains largely unknown.Objective: To investigate the effect of MA on the behavior and CBF of SAMP8 mice.Methods: SAMP8 mice were randomly divided into the AD, MA, and medicine (M) groups, with SAMR1 mice used as the normal control (N) group. Mice in the M group were treated with donepezil hydrochloride at 0.65 μg/g. In the MA group, MA was applied at Baihui (GV20) and Yintang (GV29) for 20 min. The above treatments were administered once a day for 15 consecutive days. The Morris water maze and arterial spin labeling MRI were used to assess spatial learning and memory in behavior and CBF respectively.Results: Compared with the AD group, both MA and donepezil significantly decreased the escape latency (p < 0.01), while also elevating platform crossover number and the percentage of time and swimming distance in the platform quadrant (p < 0.01 or p < 0.05). The remarkable improvement in escape latency in the MA group appeared earlier than the M group, and no significant statistical significance was observed between the N and MA group with the exception of days 5 and 10. The CBF in the prefrontal lobe and hippocampus in the MA group was substantially higher than in the AD group (p < 0.05) with the exception of the right prefrontal lobe, with similar effects of donepezil.Conclusion: Manual acupuncture can effectively improve the spatial learning, relearning and memory abilities of SAMP8 mice. The increase in CBF in the prefrontal lobe and hippocampus could be an important mechanism for the beneficial cognitive effects of MA in AD.

Although brain death has been accepted by most countries, how to diagnose brain death quickly and accurately is still a very challenging task. Electroencephalography (EEG) is considered to be one of the most effective methods for clinically diagnosing the brain state. In the present study, we investigated if it is possible to find a robust neuro-marker to help doctors diagnose brain death from the perspective of brain information interaction. With 6-channel EEG data collected from prefrontal lobe of 30 patients (deep coma: 13, brain death 17), PLV was used to measure the phase synchronization and quantify the interaction between brain regions. Firstly, we found that there exists significant difference in brain synchronization between brain death patients and deep coma patients. Then, an interesting phenomenon was observed. In all the three low frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha), synchronization between the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere (IHPS) is significantly stronger than that only in left (LHPS) or right hemisphere (RHPS) for deep coma patients. However, this phenomenon has not been found in high frequency bands (beta and gamma) and for brain death patients. More importantly, it was verified for almost every patient (only 1 exception). This phenomenon might provide a robust neuro-marker for brain death diagnosis. Finally, we tried to distinguish between brain death and brain coma by monitoring brain synchronization in real time. The results also show the effectiveness and accuracy of our method. The method proposed in this paper can not only provide doctors with more stable and effective information, but also hope to develop a new visualization tool to assist brain death diagnosis.

This research is aimed to analysis the resting EEG features in depression and the application in clinic. Sixteen patients with depression and sixteen healthy controls were involved in this study. Both features from the alpha and beta frequency bands were selected to analysis in this study. First the features' sensitivity to the group-difference and the correlation to the clinical HAMD scale score were analyzed, and then the classification method was used to further test the role of the resting EEG features in depression. The results showed that the difference between depression and healthy controls in the absolute power of beta band in the left prefrontal lobe was significant. And the alpha left-right asymmetry in the prefrontal cortex had a correlation with HAMD scale score. In addition, the classification based on the features showed that there was a relative higher accuracy rate to identify the depressions than to identify the healthy controls. Specifically, the classification based on alpha asymmetry was higher than that based on beta asymmetry, and the absolute power in beta band was higher than that in alpha band. Alpha asymmetry is a traditional sensitive resting EEG features for depression, this study provide new evidence to support the view. The findings here further suggest that absolute power in beta band would be important biomarker in depression.

Background: Executive function tends to decline as people age. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is assumed to have beneficial effects on various cognitive functions. Some prior investigations have shown that repeated sessions of tDCS enhance the executive function performance of healthy elderly people by mediating cognitive training gains. However, studies of the effect of long-term stimulation on executive function without cognitive training are absent. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore whether the executive function of healthy older adults could be enhanced with long-term tDCS alone applied on the prefrontal cortex. Methods: Sixty-five cognitively normal older adults were enrolled and randomly assigned to two groups: an anodal tDCS group and a sham tDCS group. The participants in the two groups received anodal stimulation or sham stimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal lobe, for 30 min per day for 10 consecutive days. Executive function was tested before stimulation, immediately after stimulation and 3 months after stimulation. Three core components of executive function were tested using a two-back task for updating, a flanker task for inhibition, and a switching task for shifting. Results: Across the three tasks, we failed to discover any differences between the anodal and sham stimulation. Moreover, we found no statistically significant stimulation effect in the follow-up session. Conclusion: Our study does not support the assumption that multiple sessions of tDCS that are independent of cognitive training have a beneficial effect on executive function in healthy older adults, presumably because the effect of the stimulation lies in its amplification of training gains. It indicates that combining traditional cognitive training methods with brain stimulation may be a better approach to improve older adults’ executive function.

Background: Impulsivity is an important factor associated with high risk behaviors. The new findings reveal the neuropsychological bases for this personality trait. Objectives: The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) connectivity indices in FP1 / Fp2 brain areas and multiple facets of impulsivity among college students. Patients and Methods: The current correlational study was conducted on all students of the University of Mohaghegh Ardabili in 2015 - 2016 the academic year as the statistical population. Eighty-eight students were randomly selected and asked to respond to the questionnaire of demographic information and impulsive behavior scale, then they were brought into the laboratory of psychology, located in the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Psychology of the University of Mohaghegh Ardabili and their EEG activities were recorded for six minutes both under opened eye and closed eye conditions. The data were analyzed with NeuroGuide and SPSS version 23. Results: The current study results showed a positive relationship between negative urgency and delta activity in closed eye condition in FP1 / Fp2 areas. Also, beta activity in opened eye condition in FP1 / Fp2 areas was negatively correlated both to lack of premeditation and positive urgency. Moreover, there was a significant relationship between high beta activities in closed eye condition and the lack of perseverance. Conclusions: The obtained results were consistent with prior findings highlighting the importance of the high beta and low delta activity in prefrontal lobe in impulsive behaviors.

We are conscious and verbally report some of the information reaching our senses, although a big amount of information is processed unconsciously. There is no agreement about the neural correlates of consciousness, with low-level theories proposing that neural processing on primary sensory brain regions is the most important neural correlate of consciousness, while high-level theories propose that activity within the fronto-parietal network is the key component of conscious processing (Block, 2009). Contrary to the proposal of high-level theories, patients with prefrontal lobe damage do not present clinical symptoms associated to consciousness deficits. In the present study, we explored the conscious perception of near-threshold stimuli in a group of patients with right prefrontal damage and a group of matched healthy controls. Results demonstrated that perceptual contrast to perceive the near-threshold targets was related to damage to the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and with reduced integrity of the ventral branch of the right superior longitudinal fascicule (SLF III). These results suggest a causal role of the prefrontal lobe in conscious processing.

Whereas it was previously thought that there was a single overarching frontal lobe syndrome, it is now clear that several distinct cognitive and behavioral processes are mediated by the frontal lobes. This article reviews these processes and the underlying neuroanatomy and provides an approach to the assessment of prefrontal lobe functions at the bedside.Cognitive and behavioral frontal lobe functions are mediated by the prefrontal regions rather than the frontal lobes as a whole. At least five separate prefrontal functions have been defined: energization, task setting, monitoring, behavioral/emotional regulation, and metacognition. Energization is mediated by the superior medial prefrontal cortices bilaterally, task setting by the left lateral frontal cortex, monitoring by the right lateral prefrontal cortex, behavioral/emotional regulation by the orbitofrontal cortex, and metacognition by the frontal poles. Only task setting and monitoring are considered executive functions.Distinct cognitive and behavioral processes are mediated by different parts of the frontal lobe. Lesions in these areas result in characteristic clinical deficits that are discussed in this article. Key messages are that prefrontal regions mediate the higher cortical functions (as opposed to the frontal lobes in general) and that prefrontal functions are not equivalent to executive functions.

In this study we compared the neuropsychological profile of phenylketonuria (PKU) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to examine the specificity of the executive function (EF) impairment reported in these two patologies. A total of 55 age-matched children and adolescents were assessed, including 11 patients with PKU, 16 patients with HIV and 28 healthy controls, underwent a neuropsychological assessment. Although neither the PKU nor the HIV group scored below the normative ranges, both groups showed lower scores in neuropsychological tests engaging EFs than controls. In addition, compared to patients with PKU the HIV group performed significantly worse in the Trail-Making Test A, Corsi Span and Verbal Fluency. These findings suggest that EF impairments in PKU (a) are limited to EFs (i.e., working memory and attentional shifting), (b) are not simply due to generalized processing speed deficits and (c) overlap partially with EF impairments found in a chronic medical developmental disorder.

International audience; The concepts of "frontal" and "dysexecutive" syndromes are still a matter of debate in the literature. These terms are often used interchangeably but can be distinguished when considering specific frontal behavioural deficits which occur during social interaction. Despite being of interest for the clinical assessment and care management of patients with anterior brain damage, few studies have tried to disentangle the specificity of each syndrome. We report the case of eight patients with frontal lobe damage who were assigned to one of two groups based on whether or not they showed a dysexecutive syndrome. The nondysexecutive group differed from the dysexecutive group in showing environmental dependency phenomena, behavioural disorders triggered by social interaction. By adopting an interactionist perspective, this pilot study contributes to defining more precisely the distinction between "frontal" and "dysexecutive" syndromes. The discussion focuses on the potential interest of the interactionist approach in designing appropriate methodologies of assessment and rehabilitation of patients with frontal lobe syndrome.

Still, the variability of brain creatine metabolism is largely unattended in magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) research. In the human brain, marginal sex differences in creatine levels have been found in the prefrontal cortex. It is however not known to what degree these sex differences are stable or change with varying gonadal hormone levels. The current study therefore investigated creatine in the prefrontal cortex across the menstrual cycle. In addition, we explored cerebral asymmetries. Creatine, Choline (Cho), N-acetylaspartate (NAA), Myo inositol (mI), and glutamate þ glutamine (Glx) were assessed three times in 15 women and 14 men using MRS. Women were tested in cycle phases of varying hormone levels (menstrual, follicular, and luteal phase). Prefrontal creatine was found to change across the menstrual cycle, in a hemisphere-specific manner. Women in the follicular phase showed increased left prefrontal creatine accompanied with reduced right prefrontal creatine, while this asymmetry was not present in the luteal phase. In men, the creatine levels remained stable across three testing sessions. In general, both men and women were found to have higher creatine levels in the left as compared to the right prefrontal cortex. Exploratory analyses of other metabolites showed similar asymmetries in NAA, Cho, and mI, while Cho also showed a menstrual cycle effect. This is the first time that sex hormone-related changes in creatine metabolism have been demonstrated in the human brain. These findings may have important methodological implications for MRS research, as it supports previous concerns against uncritical usage of creatine as a reference measure for other metabolites, assumed to be invariant across individuals and conditions.

Specific characteristics of the functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) of the hemodynamic response may represent the brain cortical activity levels during mental arithmetic tasks. In this paper, we use hemodynamic response signals of the prefrontal cortex, acquired by a 4-channel fNIRS system to identify the difficulty level of an arithmetic task. To this end, twelve temporal features and several classification methods are used. In addition, most discriminating features are identified by principle component analysis (PCA) method. Experimental results show that the highest accuracy rate of 92.2% is achieved by a linear Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. They also show that skewness and total area of the signal from the 3 cm channel on the left prefrontal lobe are the most discriminating features.

Despite the insula's location in the epicenter of the human language area, its specific role in language is not sufficiently understood. The left insula has been related to a diversity of speech/language functions, including articulatory planning, language repetition ability, and phonological recognition. To further our understanding of the role of the insula in language, a meta-analytic connectivity study using the Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) technique was developed. By means of the BrainMap functional database, 26 papers corresponding to 39 paradigms, and including 522 participants were selected. Thirteen different activation clusters were found; insula connections included not only areas involved in language production (such as the Broca's area) and language understanding (such as the Wernicke's area), but also areas involved in language repetition (such as the supramarginal gyrus) and other linguistic functions, such as BA9 in the left prefrontal lobe (involved in complex language processes) and BA37 (involved in lexico-semantic associations). In conclusion, the insula represents a core area in language processing, as it was suggested during the 19th century.

Background. The prospective memory (PM) construct is aimed at capturing cognitive operations involved in the successful accomplishment of delayed intentions. It is generally agreed that PM impairment occurs in patients with prefrontal lobes damage.Objective. To evaluate if there is a causal role of a deficit of executive abilities (failures of planning, set-shifting, selective attention, or working memory) over the PM impairment.Methods. We report a detailed investigation of PM and executive abilities in two patients with posttraumatic damage to prefrontal lobes who complained from a reduced compliance with appointments and daily routines.Results. Laboratory tests confirmed a difficulty in fulfilling delayed intentions in response to the occurrence of critical events and elapsed time. In one patient, PM impairment was associated with poor performance on tests investigating planning, working memory, and mental shifting. The other patient performed in the normal range on all executive tests.Conclusions. Despite the frequent claim of a dependence of PM deficits from executive dysfunction, the reported cases demonstrate that this is not necessarily the case. The results are discussed in the light of current hypotheses relating PM impairment to other deficits that commonly occur as a result of damage to the prefrontal lobes.

Knowledge of adolescent brain development is increasingly being used by pedagogues, family coaches, and other parenting professionals to tell parents what to do with their teenage children. The promise is that knowledge of the teenage brain not only explains “typical” adolescent behavior, but also provides an answer to the timely question of how to be a good parent. This chapter explores how the popular notion of the teenage brain is made valuable in Dutch parenting discourse to address concerns and ideals of good parenting—in short, questions of ethics. Instead of providing an inconclusive answer, parenting experts mobilize the teenage brain to reconcile different and sometimes conflicting parental norms, resulting in two distinct moral repertoires of parenting as “external frontal lobe.” The case of the teenage brain as parenting advice indicates the constitutive role norms, values, and ideas of the good play in the diffusion of neuroscience knowledge into society.

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), as a non-invasive neuroimaging technique, was used to monitor the activation of prefrontal lobe on human brain during sweet taste processing. The primary aim of the present study was to find the region of interest (ROI) which is related to sweetness, and make further understanding of the central organization of taste. Based on event-related design, the experiments were performed with 16 volunteers by sweet taste stimulus. It was confirmed that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is involved in sweet taste processing and fNIRS provided an alternative way for studying taste-related brain function under more natural conditions. This study might be effective for detecting the accession area in the cortex of sweet taste and helpful for studying on human feeding and taste disease like taste dyspepsia or disorder.

Background: Art is a characteristic of mankind which requires superior central nervous processing and integration of motor functions with visual information. At the present time, a significant amount of information related to neurobiological basis of artistic creation has been derived from neuro-radiological cognitive studies which have revealed that subsequent to tissue destruction the artists continue to create art. The curent study aims to review the most important cases of visual artists with stroke and to discuss artistic skills recovery and compensation as well as artistic style after stroke. Methods: The role of various central nervous system regions in artistic creation was reviewed on the basis of previoulsy published functional studies. Our PubMed search(1995-2015) has identified ten interanationally famous artists with right cerebral stroke as well as five with left cerebral stroke who survived and continued to create art after stroke. As the artists included in this review lived at various times during the XXth century and in different countries clinical information related to their case was limited. However, it appears that artistic skills recovery and compensation appear within days after stroke. Some of the artists would subsequently change their artistic style. All these elements are evaluated in the context of specific clinical cases. Conclusion: The post-stroke artistic skills recovery and compensation with development of a new style or the opposite, regaining the previous pre-stroke style, represents a significant element of clinical importance in medical rehabilitation as well as neuroaesthetics which requires further evaluation. At the present time, the molecular mechanisms of artistic creation are poorly understood and more standardized clinical and experimental studies are needed.

Objective: The aim of this study was to develop the assistive device for accelerator and brake pedals using bio-signals from the prefrontal lobe in the driving simulator and evaluate its performance. Background: There is lack of assistive devices for the driving in peoples with disabilities in Korea. However, if bio-signals and/or brain waves are used at driving a car, the people with serious physical limitations can improve their community mobility. Method: 15 subjects with driver"s license participated in this study for experiment of driving performance evaluation in the simulator. Each subject drove the simulator the same course 10 times in three separated groups which use different interface controllers to accelerate and brake: (1) conventional pedal group, (2) joystick group and (3) bio-signal group(horizontal quick glance of the eyes and clench teeth). All experiments were recorded and the driving performances were evaluated by three inspectors. The sound of digital media would be able to perform communication by stimulating body's senses. Because the sound stimuli could arouse a person into the physiological excitement and sensitivity, which appear as the changes of heartbeat, blood pressure, brain waves(EEG) signals. In this paper, we would like to examine whether the game music mixed with relaxing white noises has an effect to relax game player or not through the EEG changes of game players. For the experiment, we divided game players into group A that plays game while hearing game music mixed with white noises, and group B that plays game while hearing game music not mixed. And we measured the EEG changes of the prefrontal lobe between two groups. The result shows that the game music mixed with white noises has an relaxing effect for the left brain, but fall short of the expectations for the right brain. It would be a basic research which will contribute to the development of serious games for psychotherapy using relaxing white noises.
