Monsoons govern the climate of a large part of Asia from the Indian subcontinent to eastern China today. However, their establishment and evolution remain debated and are regularly re-evaluated thanks to the acquisition of new climate indicators. Recent data suggest that the monsoon regime in Asia was already in place about s 40Ma ago, in the late Eocene, in a globally warmer climate context and in a paleogeographic configuration very different from today. The aim of this thesis is to study the conditions for the development of Asian monsoons during the period 42-33Ma, encompassing the late Eocene and the major climatic transition from Eocene to Oligocene. We investigate the different fields of persistent uncertainties for this period (paleogeography, pCO2, sea level) and the different sources of climatic variability (mainly orbital forcing). We use the earth system model IPSL-CM5A2, recently adapted to the study of paleoclimates. Using a first late Eocene paleogeography and a pCO2 of 1120 ppm, we first show that the model simulates extremely seasonal rainfall in Asia, without presenting the atmospheric circulation characteristic of monsoons. The sensitivity of the late-Eocene climate and vegetation cover to the orbital parameters is then evaluated through various sensitivity tests. We show that orbital variations may have been a major forcing of climate and biological variability in Asia. Configurations favouring strong inter-hemispheric thermal gradients (via strong obliquities and/or precessions inducing warm boreal summers), by causing increased migration of humid equatorial air masses over the continent, generate seasonally very humid climates in summer over Southeast Asia. More generally, the vegetation cover also appears to be very sensitive to orbital variations in the subtropics and high latitudes. These results open new perspectives for reflection on possible relationships between orbital forcing, climate and the opening of dispersal corridors for Asian fauna towards Europe and America (the so-called Grande Coupure phenomenon). Finally, we compare the atmospheric circulations generated by alternative paleogeographic reconstructions of the Asian region. They test, for example, different altitudes of the Tibetan plateau and different morphologies of the initial phase of the collision between India and Asia, both of which are still the subject of much debate. Finally, these results are put into perspective by comparing them with climate simulations at ∼34, ∼20 and ∼10 Ma. The simulated climate in Asia finally appears to be very insensitive to local changes in the Indo-Tibetan paleogeography. Conversely, we note the progressive appearance of the pressure fields and winds characteristic of monsoons as the withdrawal of the Paratethys Sea and the closure of the Neotethys Ocean allows the exposure of the Arabian Peninsula and Central Asia, thus greatly increasing the continentality of the region. We thus suggest that the thermal gradients induced by the Asian continentality on a geological time scale, or by favourable orbital parameters on a time scale of a few thousand years, constitute the dominant forcings of the monsoon regime in Asia., Les moussons régissent le climat d’une large partie de l’Asie depuis le subcontinent indien jusqu’à l’est de la Chine actuellement. Leur mise en place et leur évolution restent cependant débattues et sont régulièrement réévaluées grâce à l’acquisition de nouveaux indicateurs climatiques. Des données récentes suggèrent que le régime de mousson en Asie fonctionnait déjà il y a environ 40 Ma, à l’Éocène supérieur, dans un contexte climatique globalement plus chaud et dans une configuration paléogéographique très différente d’aujourd’hui. Le but de cette thèse est d’étudier les conditions d’une mise en place des moussons asiatiques au cours de la période 42-33 Ma, englobant la fin de l’Éocène et la transition climatique majeure de l’Éocène-Oligocène. Nous balayons les différents champs d’incertitudes persistantes pour cette époque (paléogéographie, pCO2, niveau marin) et les différentes sources de variabilité climatique (le forçage orbital essentiellement). Nous utilisons le modèle de système- Terre IPSL-CM5A2, récemment adapté à l’étude des paléoclimats. En utilisant une première paléogéographie tardi-Éocène et une pCO2 de 1120 ppm, nous montrons dans un premier temps que le modèle simule des précipitations extrêmement saisonnières en Asie, sans pour autant présenter la circulation atmosphérique caractéristique des moussons. La sensibilité du climat et du couvert végétal tardi-Éocène aux paramètres orbitaux est ensuite évaluée à travers différents tests de sensibilité. Nous démontrons que les variations orbitales ont pu être un forçage majeur de variabilité climatique et biologique en Asie. Les configurations favorisant des gradients thermiques inter-hémisphériques importants (via des obliquités fortes et/ou des précessions induisant des étés boréaux chauds), en provoquant une migration accrue des masses d’air équatoriales humides sur le continent, génèrent des climats saisonnièrement très humides en été sur le sud-est asiatique. Plus globalement, le couvert végétal semble également très sensible aux variations orbitales dans les subtropiques et aux hautes latitudes. Ces résultats ouvrent de nouvelles pistes de réflexion sur de possibles relations entre forçage orbital, climat et ouverture de corridors de dispersion des faunes asiatiques vers l’Europe et l’Amérique (phénomènes nommés Grande Coupure). Enfin, nous comparons les circulations atmosphériques générées par des reconstructions paléogéographiques alternatives de la région asiatique. Elles testent par exemple différentes altitudes du plateau tibétain et différentes morphologies de la phase initiale de collision entre l’Inde et l’Asie, ces deux aspects étant encore extrêmement débattus. Pour finir, ces résultats sont mis en perspective en les comparant à des simulations climatiques à ∼34, ∼20 et ∼10 Ma. Le climat simulé en Asie apparaît finalement très peu sensible aux changements locaux de la paléogéographie indo-tibétaine. À l’inverse, nous notons l’apparition progressive des champs de pressions et des vents caractéristiques des moussons à mesure que le retrait de la mer Paratéthys et de la fermeture de l’océan Néotéthys permet l’exondation de la péninsule arabique et de l’Asie centrale, augmentant ainsi fortement la continentalité de la région. Nous suggérons ainsi que les gradients thermiques induits par la continentalité asiatique sur une échelle de temps géologique, ou par des paramètres orbitaux favorables sur une échelle de temps de quelques milliers d’années constituent les forçages dominants du régime des moussons en Asie.

This thesis focuses on the study of Titan's atmosphere ans its seasonal variations, with a Global Climate Model (GCM). The longevity of the Cassini-Huygens mission having made it possible to map the atmosphere for half a Titan-year, many seasonal phenomena have been highlighted, concerning the evolution of temperature in the polar stratospheric regions, the role of trace compounds, or the polar clouds at high altitude. A global understanding of these mechanisms is achieved through tools such as GCMs. As the IPSL Titan GCM preexisting before this thesis did not satisfactorily address these problems, as it suffered from a poor representation of the temperature in the stratosphere, we set up a new radiative transfer scheme. This revision extends to the entire coupling with photochemical and microphysical modules. A method is developed to take into account the opacities variations of trace compounds induced by seasonal changes. Since the preexisting microphysical model has many limitations, a new one is being implemented. Fully coupled dynamic-physical-photochemical-microphysical simulations can thus be performed. They enable the study of the influence of the couplings on the thermal structure and atmospheric dynamics. Sepcial attention is brought to bear on the stratospheric polar regions where the mechanisms at work in the circulation reversal are compared to Cassini data. Finally, the seasonal evolution of the compounds is discussed and the role of couplings is analyzed., Cette thèse porte sur l'étude de l'atmosphère de Titan et ses variations saisonnières, avec un modèle de climat global (GCM). La longévité de la mission Cassini-Huygens ayant permis de cartographier l'atmosphère pendant une demi-année titanienne, de nombreux phénomènes saisonniers ont été mis en évidence, concernant l'évolution de la température dans les régions stratosphériques polaires, le rôle des composés traces, ou les nuages polaires à haute altitude. Une compréhension de ces mécanismes passe par le biais d'outils comme les GCM. Le GCM Titan de l'IPSL existant avant ces travaux ne permettant pas d'aborder correctement ces problèmes, car souffrant d'une mauvaise représentation de la température dans la stratosphère, on met en place un nouveau transfert radiatif. Cette refonte s'étend à l'ensemble des couplages avec les modules photochimiques et microphysiques. On développe notamment une méthode pour prendre en compte les variations d'opacité des composés traces induites par les changements saisonniers - méthode potentiellement applicable à d'autres objets. Le modèle microphysique existant ayant de nombreuses limitations, on en implémente un nouveau. Des simulations entièrement couplées dynamique-physique-photochimie-microphysique peuvent ainsi être réalisées. Avec celles-ci on étudie l'influence des couplages sur la structure thermique et la dynamique atmosphérique. Une attention particulière est portée sur les régions polaires stratosphériques, où les mécanismes œuvrant dans le renversement de la circulation sont comparés aux observations de Cassini. Enfin, l'évolution saisonnière des composés est discutée et le rôle des couplages est analysé.

The timing and rate of surface elevations of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau remain controversial and their impact on Asian climate and the onset of monsoon systems in this area is highly debated. Stable oxygen paleoaltimetry is considered to be a very efficient and widely applied technique, but has limitations from two sides: 1) the link between stable oxygen composition of precipitation and climate is not well established, 2) Cenozoic climate over Asia is poorly reconstructed. With a purpose of filling the gap in our knowledge of climate variability over Asia during the Cenozoic, we use the isotope-enabled atmospheric general circulation model LMDZ-iso to understand the links between the growth of mountains, associated climate changes and δ18O in paleo-precipitation. Our results show a significant influence of the Paratethys retreat, the latitudinal displacement of India and the height of the Tibetan Plateau on Asian hydrological cycle. For the purpose of understanding where and how the climatic changes linked with the growth of mountains affect δ18O in precipitation, we develop a theoretical expression for the precipitation composition based on the Rayleigh distillation and show that only 40% of sampled sites for paleoaltimetry depict signal attributed to topography changes. We conclude that the Himalayas may have attained their current elevation later than expected. Realistic Cenozoic boundary conditions allow us reconstructing δ18O in paleoprecipitation for several periods during the Cenozoic (for 55 Ma, 42 Ma, 30 Ma and 15 Ma). The focus has been put on the Eocene (42 Ma), since paleoelevation reconstructions are particularly controversial for this time. We show that Eocene precipitation δ18O is rather insensitive to topographic height in Asia. However, carbonate δ18O still records paleo-elevation because the fractionation between calcite and water is sensitive to temperature, which partly depends on altitude. Comparison of simulated Eocene δ18O patterns with data from the carbonate archives suggest that the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau did not reach present-day (> 3000 m) elevations during the Eocene.; La vitesse de surrection du l’Himalaya et du plateau tibétain tout au long du Cénozoïque reste encore aujourd’hui largement débattue. L’analyse des isotopes stables de l’oxygène pour reconstruire les paléo-altitudes est considérée comme une technique très efficace et a été largement utilisée. Néanmoins, cette méthode a deux limites principales: 1) les relations entre δ18O et climat ne sont pas bien établies et 2) le climat Cénozoïque en Asie est mal contraint. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous avons étudié le lien entre la surrection des montagnes, les changements climatiques associés et le δ18O dans la paléo-précipitation. Nous utilisons le modèle de circulation générale atmosphérique isotopique LMDZ-iso. Nos simulations climatiques montrent que le retrait de la Paratéthys, le déplacement latitudinal de l’Inde et l’altitude du plateau tibétain contrôlent les précipitations et la variabilité de la mousson en Asie. Afin de comprendre où et comment ces changements climatiques liés à la surrection des montagnes affectent le δ18O, nous avons proposé une expression théorique de la composition isotopique des précipitations fondée sur la distillation de Rayleigh. Nous avons montré que seulement 40 % des sites échantillonnés de l’Himalaya et du plateau tibétain contiennent une signature isotopique représentant la topographie. Les résultats obtenus dans cette étude montrent que l’Himalaya pourrait avoir atteint son altitude actuelle plus tardivement que précédemment proposé. Des conditions aux limites réalistes nous permettent de reconstruire le δ18O des paléo-précipitations pour quatre époques du Cénozoïque (55, 42, 30 et 15 Ma). Dans la mesure où les reconstructions des paléo-altitudes sont particulièrement controversées pour les premières étapes de l’évolution du plateau tibétain, nous avons ensuite approfondi notre étude en nous focalisant sur l’Eocène (en utilisant une paléogéographie qui correspond à 42 Ma). Pour ce cas, nous montrons que le δ18O des précipitations est insensible à l’altitude en Asie, tandis que le δ18O dans les archives naturelles (carbonates) enregistre le signal de la paléo-élévation puisque le fractionnement entre la calcite et l’eau est sensible à la température, qui elle-même dépend en partie de l’altitude. La comparaison du δ18O simulé pour l’Eocène avec les données du δ18O mesuré dans les carbonates suggère que, pendant l’Eocène, l’Himalaya et le plateau tibétain n’avaient pas encore atteint leur élévation actuelle (> 3000 m).

Climate evolution over the next ten to hundred years involves many questions, linked to the impact of man. Indeed, greenhouse gases emissions since the beginning of the industrial era lead to an increase in temperature. The latter can affect terrestrial ecosystems, particularly in boreal regions where observed and projected temperature increase is larger than in mid-latitudes. Evolution of these ecosystems can trigger climate feedbacks. For example, the currently observed « Arctic greening » phenomenon could enhance the warming via a decrease in albedo due to the increase in vegetation cover. In order to address these questions, climate models were developped, including continental surface models taking into account the fluxes of mass and energy. In this thesis, such a model was used, the continental surface scheme ORCHIDEE, which includes a succinct description of boreal vegetation. The aim of this work was thus the implementation and the modeling of boreal vegetation.In order to describe high-latitude vegetation, i.e. toundras and steppes, new plant functional types (PFTs) were integrated into the model based on existing PFTs. First, non-vascular plants (NVPs) were integrated to represent lichens and bryophytes found in desert toundras and peatlands, then shrubs to represent an intermediate stratum between trees and grasses in toundras, and finally boreal C3 grasses to distinguish vegetation found in boreal steppes and temperate grasslands. The description of this boreal vegetation was accompanied by the integration of new charachteristic processes, from the implementation of new interactions such as the protection of shrubs by snow in winter, to the simple choice of new PFT parameters such as the lower photosynthetic capacity of boreal C3 grasses compared to temperate C3 grasses, through the modification of existing processes such as the stomatal conductance of NVPs. Other processes linked to vegetation were also updated or corrected. Finally, to model the dynamics of boreal vegetation, new PFTs were integrated into the initial description in the model.Those changes enabled the modeling of boreal vegetation and its impact on other variables (mass or energy fluxes), either using a prescribed vegetation (simulations on the recent period), or using a dynamical vegetation (recent and future simulations using RCPs 4.5 and 8.5). Simulations using the prescribed vegetation indicated that vegetation behaviour is better represented with the new PFTs. With original PFTs, productivity and biomass were overestimated in boreal regions, and lead to an underestimation of albedo and an overestimation of transpiration. Simulations using a dynamical vegetation demonstrated the ability of the model, using the new boreal vegetation, to represent current-day biomes as well as « Arctic greening ». However, the shrubification observed in several studies was not reproduced. Similarly, the impact of new PFTs on other model outputs is important, with for example a decrease in productivity or albedo in winter compared to the original vegetation. Thus, the introduction of boreal PFTs generally resulted in a better description of Arctic ecosystems and of the exchanges of energy and mass with the atmosphere. On the other hand, the protection of permafrost by NVPs was not as substantial as expected and was compensated by an increase in soil humidity (due to shrubs and boreal grasses).The introduction of the new boreal vegetation in the ORCHIDEE model thus seems relevant, and highlights the importance of representing these ecosystems. This work opens up new perspectives to improve future and past climate simulations. The next step consists in modeling vegetation since the Holocene into the future in order to simulate the current amounts of carbone in the permafrost, and to project the outcome of these stocks in the context of climate change and permafrost melt., L’évolution du climat sur les prochaines dizaines voire centaines d’années pose de nombreuses interrogations, du fait de l’impact de l’homme. Les émissions de gaz à effet de serre depuis le début de l’ère industrielle entrainent une augmentation des températures. Celle-ci est susceptible d’affecter les écosystèmes terrestres, notamment dans les régions boréales où les augmentations de température observées et projetées sont plus importantes. Une évolution de ces écosystèmes peut entrainer des rétroactions sur le climat. Ainsi le phénomène actuel observé de verdissement des régions boréales (ou « Arctic greening ») peut augmenter ce réchauffement via une diminution de l’albédo. Afin de répondre à ces interrogations, des modèles climatiques ont été développés, intégrant des modèles de surface continentale représentant les flux de matière et d’énergie. Le travail effectué dans cette thèse a été mené à partir de l’un d’eux, le modèle de surface continentale ORCHIDEE, qui comprend une description succincte de la végétation boréale. L’objectif de cette thèse était donc l’implémentation puis la modélisation de la végétation boréale.Afin de décrire la végétation présente au niveau des hautes latitudes, i.e. les toundras et les steppes, de nouveaux types de végétation (PFTs) ont été intégrés au modèle à partir des PFTs déjà présents. Tout d’abord, les plantes non vasculaires (NVPs) ont été introduites pour représenter les lichens et les bryophytes, ensuite les buissons pour représenter une strate intermédiaire entre les arbres et les herbacées, et enfin des herbacées C3 boréales pour distinguer la végétation considérée dans les steppes boréales et les prairies tempérées. La description de cette végétation boréale s’est accompagnée de l’intégration de nouveaux processus caractéristiques, allant de l’implémentation d’interactions nouvelles telles que la protection des buissons par la neige en hiver, au simple choix de nouveaux paramètres du PFT, en passant par la modification de processus déjà présents dans le modèle comme la conductance stomatique des NVPs. D’autres processus en lien avec la végétation ont également été mis à jour ou corrigés. Enfin, pour modéliser la dynamique de la végétation boréale, les nouveaux PFTs ont été intégrés à la description initialement présente dans le modèle.Ces modifications ont permis de modéliser la végétation boréale et ses impacts sur les autres variables du système (flux de matière ou d’énergie), soit avec une végétation prescrite (simulations de la période récente), soit avec une végétation dynamique (simulations présentes et futures, à partir des scénarios RCPs 4.5 et 8.5). Les simulations effectuées avec la végétation prescrite montrent que l’on représente mieux le comportement de la végétation avec les nouveaux PFTs. Avec les PFTs originaux la productivité et la biomasse étaient surestimées dans les régions boréales et entrainaient une sous-estimation de l’albédo et une surestimation de la transpiration. Les simulations avec une végétation dynamique ont démontré la capacité du modèle à représenter avec la nouvelle végétation boréale les biomes actuels ainsi que l’« Arctic greening ». Par contre, l’embuissonement observé dans plusieurs études n’a pas été reproduit. Globalement l’introduction des PFTs boréaux s’est traduite par une meilleure description des écosystèmes arctiques et des échanges d’énergie et de matière avec l’atmosphère. Par contre, la protection du pergélisol par les NVPs n’a pas été aussi importante qu’attendu et a été compensée par une augmentation de l’humidité du sol.L’introduction de la nouvelle végétation boréale dans le modèle ORCHIDEE semble donc pertinente et met en évidence l’importance de la représentation de ces écosystèmes. Ce travail ouvre donc des perspectives pour améliorer les simulations climatiques, tant futures que passées. Comme la modélisation de la végétation depuis l’Holocène afin de simuler la quantité de carbone contenu aujourd’hui dans le pergélisol.

Les changements climatiques constituent un enjeu important en santé publique. En effet, une hausse des températures provoquera une hausse de la mortalité attribuable à la chaleur. En outre, certaines populations et territoires sont particulièrement vulnérables aux effets de la chaleur. Il est donc nécessaire de les identifier clairement ainsi que les impacts futurs pour orienter avec équité les politiques publiques aujourd’hui et à l’avenir. L’objectif de cette thèse est de documenter les facteurs de vulnérabilité à la chaleur dans le présent et les éléments permettant leur prise en compte pour l’avenir dans le contexte des changements climatiques. Quatre étapes ont été menées pour répondre à cet objectif : a) Mener une revue systématique et une méta-analyse des facteurs de vulnérabilité face aux risques de mortalité en lien avec la chaleur ; b) Analyser si l’exposition chronique à la pollution atmosphérique modifie la relation entre la chaleur et la mortalité dans un contexte urbain (Paris) et explorer la double interaction avec la défaveur sociale ; c) Développer une méthode de quantification des impacts liés à la chaleur en lien avec les changements climatiques en intégrant une grande diversité de simulations climatiques ; d) Estimer les inégalités d’années de vies perdues attribuables à la chaleur et leurs projections futures dans deux contextes distincts (Montréal et Paris) et comparer ces inégalités. Cette thèse a permis de mettre en évidence sur la base de la littérature épidémiologique les groupes de population qui sont les plus vulnérables face aux effets de la chaleur et de montrer qu’il y a plusieurs divergences par rapport aux recommandations émises par les institutions de santé publique vis-à-vis de l’identification de populations vulnérables. Cette thèse a permis également d’identifier l’exposition chronique à la pollution atmosphérique comme nouveau facteur de vulnérabilité à la chaleur et que cette vulnérabilité était encore plus prononcée lorsqu’il s’agissait de populations défavorisées socialement. Puis, une méthode permettant de quantifier l’impact des changements climatiques sur les décès attribuables à la chaleur et ses sources d’incertitudes a été développée, et a permis de mettre en évidence que la probabilité que les changements climatiques conduisent à une augmentation de la mortalité en lien avec la chaleur est très forte. Cette méthode a ensuite été utilisée pour estimer que l’augmentation de la température conduira à une augmentation des inégalités sociales d’années de vie perdues à la fois à Montréal et à Paris, l’effet des changements climatiques sur l’accroissement de ces inégalités étant plus fort à Montréal qu’à Paris. Cette thèse, en se basant sur diverses méthodes épidémiologiques, a permis dans l’ensemble de clarifier quelles populations étaient particulièrement à risque face aux effets de la chaleur et de questionner les recommandations émises par les organismes tels que l’OMS. Elle a également permis de montrer l’effet des changements climatiques sur l’évolution de vulnérabilités face à la chaleur pour inciter dès aujourd’hui la mise en place de politiques publiques équitables et limiter l’impact des changements climatiques sur l’accroissement des inégalités de santé., Climate change is an important public health threat. An increase in temperatures will lead to an increase in mortality attributable to temperature. In addition, some populations and territories are particularly vulnerable to the impact of increases in heat. It is thus necessary to identify these populations and territories as well as examine future heat-related health impacts in order to recommend equity-oriented policies today and in the future. The general objective of this thesis is to document current and future heat-related vulnerability factors in the context of climate change. In order to address this general objective, the thesis involved four components: a) to conduct a systematic review and a meta-analysis to assess the heterogeneity in the heat-mortality associations with respect to individual and contextual population characteristics; b) to identify whether and how the magnitude of mean temperature effects on all-cause mortality were modified by chronic air pollution exposure, social deprivation, and a combination of these two dimensions; c) to develop a method to quantify the climate change impacts on heat-related mortality using climate modeling; d) to assess historical and future social disparities in years of life lost caused by ambient temperature in Montreal and Paris, and compare these estimates as well as the impact of climate change on social disparities between the two cities. This thesis highlights which populations are more vulnerable to heat and shows that several differences exist with regard to guidelines from international public health institutions for the identification of vulnerable populations. This thesis also identified chronic air pollution exposure as a new vulnerability factor in heat-related mortality and that it has a double interaction with social deprivation. Furthermore, in this thesis a novel method to quantify future heat-related mortality was developed which emphasized the strong evidence of an increase in heat-related mortality under climate change. This method was then applied to estimate the increase in daily years of life lost social disparities in both Montreal and Paris under climate change which showed that this increase would be greater in Montreal compared to Paris in the future. Thus, this thesis which used a variety of epidemiologic methods has clarified which populations are particularly vulnerable to heat impacts and challenges guidelines for the identification of vulnerable populations from international public health institutions. Cet article analyse, à partir d'un colloque international qui s'est tenu à Paris en 2014, la construction de la confiance à la fois dans les sciences et les politiques du climat. Comment, par quels méthodes et procédés, les communautés de modélisateurs établissent-elles la validité de leurs modèles ? Quel lien existe-t-il entre la confiance dans les simulations numériques du réchauffement et la capacité du système international à prendre en charge le risque climatique ? À partir du constat de l'existence d'un lien intime entre ces différentes formes de confiance, l'article met en cause une conception de l'expertise comme devant rester complètement indépendante du processus politique. What link can be established between the confidence in numerical simulations of global warming and in the capacity of the international system to successfully tackle the climate issue? The article shows that the existence of a close link between these different forms of confidence questions common belief that expertise should be completely separated from the political process. More generally, it examines the necessity of a " constitution " for the science-policy relationship at the global level at a time where new paradigms for research and for policy converge toward increasing importance of regional and local levels. The Cretaceous is depicted as the warmest period of the last 300 Ma. The oceanic circulation and location of the source zones of deep-waters are essential to understand the role of oceans in the evolution of the climate during the Cretaceous, yet they remain unclear for this period. The neodymium (Nd) isotopes are used to track oceanic circulation and exchanges between water masses, in both past and modern oceans. The Nd isotope composition (εNd) in the ocean is related to the nature of the surrounding continental landmasses. The oceanic currents transport this isotopic signature, thus every oceanic basin acquires a singular εNd. Unequivocal interpretations of the Cretaceous seawater εNd values stem from the insufficient spatial and temporal cover of available data. This PhD thesis intents to collect the Nd signature of continental margins and in regions without data for the Cretaceous, with special attention given to the potential source zones of deep-water production. Fossil fish teeth, coatings on foraminifera tests and detrital fraction from Cretaceous sediments are analyzed for their εNd. The results are compared to published data sets, in order to identify deep-waters source zones and their evolution throughout the Cretaceous. The links connecting oceanographic, palaeogeographic and climatic changes are investigated with a coupled ocean-atmosphere circulation model., Le Crétacé est décrit comme la période la plus chaude des derniers 300 millions d’années. La circulation océanique et l’origine des eaux profondes alimentant les bassins restent mal connues pour le Crétacé, alors qu’elles sont capitales dans la compréhension du rôle de l’océan dans l’évolution du climat à cette époque. Les isotopes du néodyme (Nd) permettent de tracer la circulation océanique et les échanges entre les masses d’eau, et ont été utilisés pour explorer la circulation océanique globale des océans actuels et dans le passé. La composition isotopique en Nd (εNd) des océans dérive de celle des continents qui les entourent. Les courants océaniques exportent cette signature, et les eaux profondes de chaque bassin océanique ont une composition en Nd qui leur est propre. L’interprétation du signal du Nd des eaux océaniques au Crétacé est rendue difficiles du fait de l'insuffisance de la couverture spatiale et temporelle des données existantes. L’objectif de cette thèse est l’acquisition la signature en Nd sur les marges continentales et dans les régions dépourvues de données pour le Crétacé, en se focalisant prioritairement sur les zones potentielles de production d’eau profonde. L’εNd est analysé à partir d’échantillons de dents de poissons, d’oxydes encroûtant les tests de foraminifères et de fraction détritique extraits des sédiments. Les résultats sont comparés aux données de la littérature afin d’identifier les sources des eaux profondes et leur évolution au cours du Crétacé. Les liens entre les changements océanographiques, paléogéographiques et climatiques sont explorés avec un modèle climatique couplé océan-atmosphère.

General Circulation Models (GCM) are tools which allow studying climate at large scale. Water and energy budget over continental surface are calculated by Land Surface Model (LSM). Interest on using a sophistical LSM to simulate earth climate grew up last years, in particular in transition area, where evaporation is limited on one side by energy and on other side by available water. The instrumented site of SIRTA observes many atmospheric variables and allows validating a climate model on one point. The SIRTA have also soil moisture data which are used for the first time in this thesis. These data reveal a shallow water table, according to geophysical campaign conducted during this thesis. Data from SIRTA are confronted to regional simulations produced with the LSM ORCHIDEE coupled to an atmospheric model. We develop the possibility to impose a water table in the soil modeled by ORCHIDEE, which allows maintaining evaporation during summer at the SIRTA, according to observations. We explore different hydrologic hypothesis which conduct to an evaporation increase at Western European scale and also involve precipitation increase and air cooling. Theses hypothesis are also tested in global simulations to study effects on climate and on climate change due to an increase of greenhouse gases.; Les Modèles de Circulation Générale (MCG) sont des outils permettant l'étude du climat à grande échelle et de ses principales tendances. Les bilans d'eau et d'énergie à la surface des continents y sont calculés à l'aide de modèle de surface continentale (Land Surface Model, LSM). Ces dernières années, l'intérêt d'utiliser un LSM sophistiqué pour modéliser le climat terrestre s'est affirmé, notamment au niveau des régions tempérées qui abritent des zones de transition où l'évapotranspiration est limitée d'une part par l'énergie d'autre part par l'eau disponible. Le site instrumenté du SIRTA mesure de nombreuses variables atmosphériques permettant de valider un modèle climatique en un point. Le SIRTA dispose également de données d'humidité du sol utilisées pour la première fois dans cette thèse. Ces données révèlent la présence d'une nappe perchée, en accord avec une campagne de mesures géophysiques réalisée durant cette thèse. Les données du SIRTA sont confrontées à des simulations régionales qui sont réalisées à l'aide du LSM ORCHIDEE couplé à un modèle atmosphérique. Nous développons la possibilité d'imposer une nappe au sein du sol modélisé par ORCHIDEE, ce qui permet de soutenir l'évaporation en été au SIRTA, en accord avec les observations. Nous explorons différentes hypothèses hydrologiques qui entrainent une augmentation de l'évaporation à l'échelle de l'Europe de l'Ouest et impliquent une augmentation des précipitations ainsi qu'un refroidissement de l'air. Ces hypothèses sont également testées lors de simulations globales afin d'en étudier l'influence sur les caractéristiques du climat et du changement climatique causé par une augmentation de gaz à effet de serre.

Aim: To improve knowledge of spatial climatic variability in viticultural region at fine scaleMethods and results: Night temperatures recorded at 40 data loggers that were located in the vineyards of the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin District were monitored during different weather conditions during the 2009 grape ripening period (January-March). The daily maximum difference in minimum temperature between the coolest and warmest sites was, on average, 3.2 °C for the three-month period while it reached a difference of 14 °C under radiative conditions (a difference of 1 °C to 2 °C per km and 3 °C per 100 m elevation approximately). Numerical simulations of night temperatures, using a mesoscale atmospheric model, were performed for two weather events over this period. Night temperature fields at 200m resolution were generated, taking large scale weather conditions into account. Data from 16 automatic weather stations were used for validation. Temperature data from the data loggers that were located in the vineyards were used to produce maps of spatial distribution of the daily minimum temperature at a 90m scale by means of multicriteria statistical modelling, which concomitantly took environmental factors into account. Locations with optimum thermal conditions for color and flavor development and maintenance were identified based on average values for the three-month period and for specific weather conditions.Conclusion: The range of minimum temperatures varied as a function of geographical factors and synoptic weather conditions, which resulted in significant differences in night-time thermal conditions over the wine district, with possible implications for grape metabolism. The great spatial variability within short distances emphasized the difficulty of validating outputs of atmospheric modelling with accuracy. The study showed the importance and relevance of increasing resolution to refine studies on climate spatial variability and to perform climate modelling based on distinguished weather types.Significance and impact of the study: In the context of climate change, it is crucial to improve knowledge of current climatic conditions at fine scale during periods of grapevine growth and berry ripening in order to have a baseline from which to work when discussing and considering future local adaptations to accommodate to a warmer environnement.

Numerical simulations were performed for 2000-02-03 and 2000-02-04 over the Western Cape in order to observe the alternating sea and land breeze circulation and its effects on diurnal relative humidity and temperature variation, as well as to identify wine-growing areas characterised by high humidity and cool temperature during the maturation period. The Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (RAMS version 4.3) was used at a 1 km resolution. The study domain for the simulation covered a small area from False Bay up to 35 km from the coast. Results are presented using horizontal cross-sections at surface level as well as two south-north cross-sections at longitudes l8°40'E and l8°47'E in order to examine vertical profiles of the atmosphere above the Stellenbosch I Groot Drakenstein winegrowing area. Modelled results agreed with observed data in the vineyards. The sea breeze penetrated at least 35 km inland, but the cooling effect declined rapidly with distance from the sea. Temperature differences between southern and northern slopes near the sea could be significant enough to be important for viticulture.

— The research concerning the variations in the spring rainfall (1916-1965) of the south-west of Europe and the Western Maghreb are carried on with a model on the type of variance analysis. This model allows to relate the rainfall variations of a station to the variations of quite larger areas depending on the components of the model, the effect of which being mesured. The variations of the whole area is strongly structured in most of its part during numerous years by an alone component, the first one.
