When industrial relics, such as obsolete buildings, sites, and infrastructures, enter into a process of adaptive reuse, they become transformation engines capable of shaping the urban fabric. They provide tangible and intangible links to our past and have the potential to play a significant role in today’s cities’ futures. One unresolved issue is the quantification of the externalities of these transformation processes. If undertaken correctly, adaptive reuse can contribute to the development of social and cultural capital, environmental sustainability, urban regeneration, and, most importantly, economic benefits to the surrounding community. In this sense, understanding the value of heritage is particularly important in light of the new European urban environmental policy movement based on the circular economy, which aims to change the way Member States consume and produce materials and energy. After a review of the externalities generated by the adaptive reuse of disused industrial heritage, the paper will concentrate on the estimation of economic benefits given by a transformation process that affected Turin’s Aurora district (Northern Italy) during the last years. The hedonic pricing method (HPM) was used to investigate the effects of the construction of new headquarters and the redevelopment of an old power plant converted into a museum and conference center. This study used econometric models to identify a significant increase in market prices within 800 m of the site and calculated a EUR 16,650,445 capitalized benefit from the transformation on the surrounding residential building stock. The study thus contributed to the awareness that reused heritage not only improves the lives of residents, but it also has a positive impact on the real estate market, in terms of transactions, as well as market values.

This paper presents a technique to mitigate multiple access interference (MAI) in multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) wireless communications systems. Although under normal circumstances the MC-CDMA system can achieve high spectral efficiency and resistance towards inter symbol interference (ISI) however when exposed to substantial nonlinear distortion the issue of MAI manifests. Such distortion results when the power amplifiers are driven into saturation or when the transmit signal experiences extreme adverse channel conditions. The proposed technique uses a modified iterative block decision feedback equalizer (IB-DFE) that uses a minimal mean square error (MMSE) receiver in the feed-forward path to nullify the residual interference from the IB-DFE receiver. The received signal is re-filtered in an iterative process to significantly improve the MC-CDMA system’s performance. The effectiveness of the proposed modified IB-DFE technique in MC-CDMA systems has been analysed under various harsh nonlinear conditions, and the results of this analysis presented here confirm the effectiveness of the proposed technique to outperform conventional methodologies in terms of the bit error rate (BER) and lesser computational complexity. The atom search optimization (ASO) algorithm has the characteristics of fewer parameters and better performance than the traditional intelligent optimization algorithms, but it is found that ASO may easily fall into local optimum and its accuracy is not higher. Therefore, based on the idea of speed update in particle swarm optimization (PSO), an improved atomic search optimization (IASO) algorithm is proposed in this paper. Compared with traditional ASO, IASO has a faster convergence speed and higher precision for 23 benchmark functions. IASO algorithm has been successfully applied to maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for the direction of arrival (DOA), under the conditions of the different number of signal sources, different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and different population size, the simulation results show that ML estimator with IASO algorithum has faster convergence speed, fewer iterations and lower root mean square error (RMSE) than ML estimator with ASO, sine cosine algorithm (SCA), genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Therefore, the proposed algorithm holds great potential for not only guaranteeing the estimation accuracy but also greatly reducing the computational complexity of multidimensional nonlinear optimization of ML estimator.

Smartphone-based earthquake early warning systems (EEWSs) are emerging as a complementary solution to classic EEWSs based on expensive scientific-grade instruments. Smartphone-based systems, however, are characterized by a highly dynamic network geometry and by noisy measurements. Thus, there is a need to control the probability of false alarms and the probability of missed detection. This study proposes a statistical methodology to address this challenge and to jointly estimate in near real-time earthquake parameters like epicenter and depth. The methodology is based on a parametric statistical model, on hypothesis testing and on Monte Carlo simulation. The methodology is tested using data obtained from the Earthquake Network (EQN), a citizen science initiative that implements a global smartphone-based EEWS. It is discovered that, when the probability to miss an earthquake is fixed at 1%, the probability of false alarm is 0.8%, proving that EQN is a robust smartphone-based EEW system.

The aim of this study is to extract impervious surfaces and show their spatial distribution, using different machine learning algorithms. For this purpose, geoprocessing and remote sensing techniques were used and three classification methods for digital images were compared, namely Support Vector Machines (SVM), Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Random Trees (RT) classifiers. The study area is one of the most prestigious and the largest housing estates in Warsaw (Poland), the Fort Bema housing complex, which is also an exemplary model for hydrological solutions. The study was prepared on the Geographic Information System platform (GIS) using aerial optical images, orthorectified and thus provided with a suitable coordinate system. The use of these data is therefore supported by the accuracy of the resulting infrared channel product with a pixel size of 0.25 m, making the results much more accurate compared to satellite imagery. The results of the SVM, ML and RT classifiers were compared using the confusion matrix, accuracy (Root Mean Square Error /RMSE/) and kappa index. This showed that the three algorithms were able to successfully discriminate between targets. Overall, the three classifiers had errors, but specifically for impervious surfaces, the highest accuracy was achieved with the SVM classifier (the highest percentage of overall accuracy), followed by ML and RT with 91.51%, 91.35% and 84.52% of the results, respectively. A comparison of the visual results and the confusion matrix shows that although visually the RT method appears to be the most detailed classification into pervious and impervious surfaces, the results were not always correct, e.g., water/shadow was detected as an impervious surface. The NDVI index was also mapped for the same spatial study area and its application in the evaluation of pervious surfaces was explained. The results obtained with the GIS platform, presented in this paper, provide a better understanding of how these advanced classifiers work, which in turn can provide insightful guidance for their selection and combination in real-world applications. The paper also provides an overview of the main works/studies dealing with impervious surface mapping, with different methods for their assessment (including the use of conventional remote sensing, NDVI, multisensory and cross-source data, ‘social sensing’ and classification methods such as SVM, ML and RT), as well as an overview of the research results.

In this paper, the performance of the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technique evaluated in term of Bit Error Rate (BER) with respect to Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) by using Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation for two algorithms Maximum Likelihood (MLD) and Zero-Forcing (ZF) with different configurations of antennas array in Rayleigh and Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels. The results were compared between them to determine which of the numbers antenna elements are suitable in the transmitter and receiver of each algorithm. The results of MLD offers a better configuration when 4×4 and 3×4 antennas array were used, while the ZF remains the same performance for the 2×2, 3×3 and 4×4 configurations. In different numbers of antennas, the best performance of ZF is got when the number of transmitter and receiver antennas are equal to 2×4 respectively. In this letter a new detection scheme combining the conventional Sphere decoders and K best detection algorithm is proposed. This algorithm leverages the Sphere decoder (SD) results to use smaller values of K in K best algorithm to achieve better performance. Post K best detection algorithm Darlington pairs of SD- K SD, SD- K 1 SD, and K - K 1 SD are used to get the final detection results. The proposed K best detection algorithm finds out smallest K paths by counting and sorting the bits of every candidate, which is much simpler as used in conventional sphere decoders. The computational complexity has been calculated in terms of time taken to visit the average number of K paths taken by Conventional SDs K -SDs and Darlington pair of SDs. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are used to demonstrate that the proposed approach exhibits significant performance gain over conventional SD schemes in terms of bit error rate and computational time. Besides, a complete analytical approach is provided to validate the simulation results.

Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) technology is an extension of spatial modulation (SM) technology, and one of its main advantages is to further improve band efficiency. However, the multiple active antennas for transmission also brings the demodulation difficulties at the receiver. To solve the problem of high computational complexity of the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) detection, two sub-optimal detection algorithms are proposed through reducing the number of transmit antenna combinations (TACs) detected at the receiver. One is the maximum ratio combining detection algorithm based on repetitive sorting strategy, termed as (MRC-RS), which uses MRC repetitive sorting strategy to select the most likely TACs in detection. The other is the maximum ratio combining detection algorithm, which is based on the iterative idea of the orthogonal matching pursuit, termed the MRC-MP algorithm. The MRC-MP algorithm reduces the number of TACs through finite iterations to reduce the computational complexity. For M-QAM constellation, a hard-limited maximum likelihood (HLML) detection algorithm is introduced to calculate the modulation symbol. For the M-PSK constellation, a low-complexity maximum likelihood (LCML) algorithm is introduced to calculate the modulation symbol. The computational complexity of these two algorithms for calculating the modulation symbol are independent of modulation order. The simulation results show that for GSM systems with a large number of TACs, the proposed two algorithms not only achieve almost the same bit error rate (BER) performance as the ML algorithm, but also can greatly reduce the computational complexity.

The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) inverse problem is commonly tackled in the context of the direction-of-arrival estimation theory. The latter allows achieving super resolution, along with ambiguity levels reduction, thanks to the use of parametric focusing methods, as multiple signal classification (MUSIC) and statistical regularization techniques, like the maximum-likelihood-inspired adaptive robust iterative approach (MARIA). Nevertheless, in order to correctly suit the considered signal model, MUSIC and most regularization approaches require an appropriate setting of the involved parameters. In both cases, the accuracy of the retrieved solutions depends on the right selection of the assigned values. Thus, with the aim of dealing with such an issue, this article addresses several parameter selection strategies, adapted specifically to the TomoSAR scenario. Parametric techniques as MUSIC solve the TomoSAR problem in a different manner as the regularization methods do, hence, each approach demands different methodologies for the proper estimation of their parameters. Consequently, we refer to the Kullback-Leibler information criterion for the model order selection of parametric techniques as MUSIC, whereas we rather explore the Morozov's discrepancy principle, the L-Curve, the Stein's unbiased risk estimate, and the generalized cross-validation to choose the regularization parameters. After the incorporation of these criteria to MUSIC and MARIA, respectively, their capabilities are first analyzed through simulations, and later on, utilizing real data acquired from an urban area.

In this study, we assess the potential of X-band Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery for automated classification of sea ice over the Baltic Sea. A bistatic SAR scene acquired by the TanDEM-X mission over the Bothnian Bay in March of 2012 was used in the analysis. Backscatter intensity, interferometric coherence magnitude, and interferometric phase have been used as informative features in several classification experiments. Various combinations of classification features were evaluated using Maximum likelihood (ML), Random Forests (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers to achieve the best possible discrimination between open water and several sea ice types (undeformed ice, ridged ice, moderately deformed ice, brash ice, thick level ice, and new ice). Adding interferometric phase and coherence-magnitude to backscatter-intensity resulted in improved overall classification performance compared to using only backscatter-intensity. The RF algorithm appeared to be slightly superior to SVM and ML due to higher overall accuracies, however, at the expense of somewhat longer processing time. The best overall accuracy (OA) for three methodologies were achieved using combination of all tested features were 71.56, 72.93, and 72.91% for ML, RF and SVM classifiers, respectively. Compared to OAs of 62.28, 66.51, and 63.05% using only backscatter intensity, this indicates strong benefit of SAR interferometry in discriminating different types of sea ice. In contrast to several earlier studies, we were particularly able to successfully discriminate open water and new ice classes.

This work proposes novel techniques toward the design of optimal pilot sequences to perform channel estimation in block transmission systems over wideband frequency selective wireless fading channels. The framework developed is based on minimization of the Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound (BCRB) for the mean squared error (MSE) of the channel state information (CSI) estimate. Optimal pilot signals are determined for the four predominant classes of block transmission systems, viz. single carrier zero padding (SC-ZP), multi-carrier zero padding (MC-ZP), single carrier cyclic prefix (SC-CP) and multi-carrier cyclic prefix (MC-CP) systems. This makes the techniques developed general in nature and thus applicable in a wide variety of block transmission systems. As part of this study, succinct expressions and results are also derived to characterize the error rate performance, incorporating also the effect of CSI estimation error resulting due to the proposed algorithms. Finally, numerical results obtained via Monte-Carlo simulation are presented to illustrate and compare the CSI acquisition performance of optimal pilot designs with that of conventional designs and also validate the theoretical analysis for the error rate performance.

Direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation of electromagnetic (EM) waves impinging on a spherical antenna array in short time windows is examined in this paper. Reflected EM signals due to non-line-of-sight propagation measured with a spherical antenna array can be coherent and/or highly correlated in a snapshot. This makes spectral-based methods inefficient. Spectral methods, such as maximum likelihood (ML) methods, multiple signal classification (MUSIC), and beamforming methods, are theoretically and systematically investigated in this study. MUSIC is an approach used for frequency estimation and radio direction finding, ML is a technique used for estimating the parameters of an assumed probability distribution for given observed data, and PWD applies a Fourier transform to the capture response and produces them in the frequency domain. Although they have been previously adapted and used to estimate DoA of EM signals impinging on linear and planar antenna array configurations, this paper investigates their suitability and effectiveness for a spherical antenna array. Various computer simulations were conducted, and plots of root-mean-square error (RMSE) against the square root of the Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB) were generated and used to evaluate the performance of each method. Numerical experiments and results from measured data show the degree of appropriateness and efficiency of each method. For instance, the techniques exhibit identical performance to that in the wideband scenario when the frequency f = 8 GHz, f = 16 GHz, and f = 32 GHz, but f = 16 GHz performs best. This indicates that the difference between the covariance matrix of the signal is coherent and that the steering vectors of signals impinging from that angle are small. MUSIC and PWD share the same problems in the single-frequency scenario as in the wideband scenario when the delay sample d = 0. Consequently, the DoA estimation obtained with ML techniques is more suitable, less biased, and more robust against noise than beamforming and MUSIC techniques. In addition, deterministic ML (DML) and weighted subspace fitting (WSF) techniques show better DoA estimation performance than the stochastic ML (SML) technique. For a large number of snapshots, WSF is a better choice because it is more computationally efficient than DML. Finally, the results obtained indicate that WSF and ML methods perform better than MUSIC and PWD for the coherent or partially correlated signals studied.

The spatial spectral estimation problem has applications in a variety of fields, including radar, telecommunications, and biomedical engineering. Among the different approaches for estimating the spatial spectral pattern, there are several parametric methods, as the well-known multiple signal classification (MUSIC). Parametric methods like MUSIC are reduced to the problem of selecting an integer-valued parameter [so-called model order (MO)], which describes the number of signals impinging on the sensors array. Commonly, the best MO corresponds to the actual number of targets, nonetheless, relatively large model orders also retrieve good-fitted responses when the data generating mechanism is more complex than the models used to fit it. Most commonly employed MO selection (MOS) tools are based on information theoretic criteria (e.g., Akaike information criterion, minimum description length and efficient detection criterion). Normally, the implementation of these tools involves the eigenvalues decomposition of the data covariance matrix. A major drawback of such parametric methods (together with certain MOS tool) is the drastic accuracy decrease in adverse scenarios, particularly, with low signal-to-noise ratio, since the separation of the signal and noise subspaces becomes more difficult to achieve. Consequently, with the aim of refining the responses attained by parametric techniques like MUSIC, this article suggests utilizing regularization as a postprocessing step. Furthermore, as an alternative, this article also explores the possibility of selecting a single relatively large MO (rather than using MOS tools) and enhancing via regularization, the solutions retrieved by the treated parametric methods. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of this novel strategy, synthetic aperture radar tomography is considered as application.

Maximum likelihood (ML) method for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation achieves an excellent performance in array signal processing, but the complexity and computational load of searching the multidimensional nonlinear function prevented it from practical application. Based on squirrel search algorithm (SSA), an improved SSA (ISSA) for ML DOA estimation is proposed in this paper, which can reduces the computational complexity. The idea of spatial variation and diffuse inspired by the invasive weed optimization(IWO) algorithm is applied to ISSA. The simulation experiments compared ISSA with SSA, IWO, seeker optimization algorithm(SOA), sine cosine algorithm (SCA), genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and differential evolution (DE) method for ML DOA estimator show that the proposed algorithm has faster convergence speed, fewer iterations and lower root mean square error(RMSE) under different number of signal sources, different signal to noise ratio(SNR) and different population size. Therefor the proposed algorithm does not only ensure the estimation accuracy, but also greatly reduce the computation complexity of multidimensional nonlinear optimization for the ML method. Finally, the test experiment using Micro Electronic Mechanical Systems(MEMS) vector hydrophone array in Fenhe lake show the engineering practicability of proposed ML DOA estimator with ISSA.The results obtained will be valuable in the application of engineering.

We consider Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) spoofing attacks and devise a countermeasure appropriate for mobile GNSS receivers. Our approach is to design detectors that, operating after the signal acquisition, enable the victim receiver to determine with high probability whether it is under a spoofing attack or not. Namely, the binary hypothesis is that either the GNSS receiver tracks legitimate satellite signals, $\mathcal {H}_{0}$ , or spoofed signals, $\mathcal {H}_{1}$ . We assume that there exists an unknown number of multiple spoofers in the environment and the attack strategy (which legitimate signals are spoofed by which spoofers) is not known to the receiver. Based on these assumptions, we propose an algorithm that identifies the number of spoofers and clusters the spoofing data by using Bayesian information criterion (BIC) rule. Depending on the estimated and clustered data we propose a detector, called as generalized likelihood ratio (GLRT)-like detector. We compare the performance of the GLRT-like detector with a genie-aided detector in which the attack strategy and the number of spoofers is known by the receiver. In addition to this, we extend the GLRT-like detector for the case where the noise variance is also unknown and present the performance results.

This article deals with the problem of adaptive target detection in the presence of homogeneous Gaussian interference with frequency diverse array multiple-input multiple-output radar. Adaptive detectors are devised according to the generalized likelihood ratio test criterion, where the position of the target within each range cell is assumed unknown. To obtain the maximum likelihood estimate of the target incremental range under the $H_1$ hypothesis, three different optimization strategies are pursued. They are, respectively, based on semidefinite programming, discrete grid search, and Newton method. At the analysis stage, a detection performance comparison is carried on among the new proposed adaptive detectors, benchmark, and mismatched receivers. Numerical results corroborate the effectiveness of the developed receivers.

This work studies the class of algorithms for learning with side-information that emerge by extending generative models with embedded context-related variables. Using finite mixture models (FMM) as the prototypical Bayesian network, we show that maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) of parameters through expectation-maximization (EM) improves over the regular unsupervised case and can approach the performances of supervised learning, despite the absence of any explicit ground truth data labeling. By direct application of the missing information principle (MIP), the algorithms' performances are proven to range between the conventional supervised and unsupervised MLE extremities proportionally to the information content of the contextual assistance provided. The acquired benefits regard higher estimation precision, smaller standard errors, faster convergence rates and improved classification accuracy or regression fitness shown in various scenarios, while also highlighting important properties and differences among the outlined situations. Applicability is showcased with three real-world unsupervised classification scenarios employing Gaussian Mixture Models. Importantly, we exemplify the natural extension of this methodology to any type of generative model by deriving an equivalent context-aware algorithm for variational autoencoders (VAs), thus broadening the spectrum of applicability to unsupervised deep learning with artificial neural networks. We study the problem of estimating the overall mutual information in M independent parallel discrete-time memory-less Gaussian channels from N independent data sample pairs per channel (inputs and outputs). We focus on the case where the number of active channels L is sparse in comparison with the total number of channels (L ≪ M), for which the direct application of the maximum likelihood principle is problematic due to overfitting, especially for moderate to small N. For this regime, we show that the bias of the mutual information estimate is reduced by resorting to the minimum description length (MDL) principle. As a result, simple pre-processing based on a per-channel threshold on the empirical squared correlation coefficient is required with a fixed threshold that monotonically decreases with N as 1 - N -1/N , for N ≥ 4. The resulting improvement is shown in terms of the estimated information bias. This paper proposes a new method to get explicit expressions of some quantities associated with performance analysis of the maximum likelihood DOA algorithm in the presence of an additive Gaussian noise on the antenna elements. The motivation of the paper is to make a quantitative analysis of the ML DOA algorithm in the case of multiple incident signals. We present a simple method to derive a closed-form expression of the MSE of the DOA estimate based on the Taylor series expansion. Based on the Taylor series expansion and approximation, we get explicit expressions of the MSEs of estimates of azimuth angles of all incident signals. The validity of the derived expressions is shown by comparing the analytic results with the simulation results.

International audience; This article addresses the 3-D reconstruction of urban areas using a minimal number of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) acquisitions, that is, a set of three images, characterized by intermediate spatial resolution features. In such extreme conditions, conventional tomographic techniques reveal unadapted to refined 3-D imaging purposes, either due to the resulting intrinsic coarse vertical resolution, or to the low dimensionality of the data set, that prevents any separation of complex mixed scattering patterns. A new high-resolution (HR) tomographic estimator, based on a polarimetric signal subspace fitting criterion, is proposed to overcome these limitations, as this method adapts to the statistical behavior of the backscattered signals using robust metrics. The optimization of the corresponding focusing criterion is led through a new polarimetric alternating projection algorithm, characterized by a low computational cost, which may also be used to optimize the polarimetric the deterministic maximum likelihood criterion. The proposed polarimetric signal subspace fitting technique is shown to outperform the other studied HR techniques over both simulated signals and data acquired by the DLR's ESAR sensor at L-band over Dresden city, Germany. Finally full-rank polarimetric tomographic estimators are proposed that generalize nonparametric polarimetric estimators, and permit to estimate second-order polarimetric representations in 3-D, instead of unitary rank target vector with their conventional versions. This approach makes it possible to characterize polarimetric scattering mechanisms in 3-D.

This paper divides antennas at the transmitter into several transmit antenna groups (TAGs) and extends the generalized spatial modulation (GSM) idea to a new precoding-aided multiple-input multiple-output system, which is referred to as precoding-aided GSM (PGSM) system. To mitigate the influence caused by correlated channels, we consider the interleaved grouping scheme which leads to a minimum antenna correlation within the same TAG. To select the receive antenna subset with low complexity, we propose an iterative greedy (IG) algorithm that contributes to a maximum equivalent channel gain with low-computational complexity. To reduce the complexity of maximum likelihood (ML) detector, a low complexity IG algorithm-based ML (IG-ML) detector is also derived. Simulation results show that the bit error rate (BER) performance gain up to 3.5 dB is obtained by the proposed PGSM with IG-ML detector over the PGSM with an ordered block minimum mean-squared error detector at a given BER of 10−4. It is also shown that the proposed PGSM with the IG-ML detector achieves a similar BER performance in a high signal-to-noise power ratio region compared with that of an ideal precoding for the GSM with an optimal ML detector.

The problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is important in array signal processing. To estimate the DOAs of uncorrelated, partly correlated and coherent signals, a new iterative DOA estimation algorithm, named AOP-DOA, is proposed by using alternating oblique projection (AOP). In each iteration, the oblique projection approach is employed to separate the received signals, then the DOA of each separated signal is estimated one after another. After theoretical analysis on the relationship between the proposed AOP-DOA and the conventional alternating projection based maximum likelihood estimator (AP-MLE), an AOP&AP-DOA algorithm, which is a combination of AOP-DOA and AP-MLE, is developed to reduce the computational complexity of AOP-DOA. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness and complexity of the proposed two algorithms. Particularly, AOP&AP-DOA keeps the merits of AOP-DOA, but exhibits superiority over AOP-DOA in terms of computational complexity when proper adaptive grid refinement strategy is applied.

In underwater wireless sensor networks, time synchronization and localization are basic requirements in many applications. A joint synchronization and localization framework is expected to provide better accuracy. In this paper, we propose a unified framework to execute synchronization and localization simultaneously taking stratification effect into account. In this method, the stratification effect of underwater medium is modeled using a ray tracing approach. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimator is derived, which is shown to be highly nonlinear and nonconvex. Therefore, we employ the Gauss-Newton algorithm to solve the original nonconvex ML problem in an iterative manner. Furthermore, the Cramér-Rao lower bound for this problem is derived as a benchmark. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods in both accuracy and energy efficiency.

International audience; This paper introduces a novel method to assess the social activity maintained by psychiatric patients using information and communication technologies. In particular, we model the daily usage patterns of phone calls and social and communication apps using point processes. We propose a novel nonhomogeneous Poisson process model with periodic (circadian) intensity function using a truncated Fourier series expansion, which is inferred using a trust-region algorithm. We also extend the model using a mixture of periodic intensity functions to cope with the different daily patterns of a person. The analysis of the usage of phone calls and social and communication apps of a cohort of 259 patients reveals common patterns shared among patients with relatively high homogeneity and differences among patient pathologies.

In this paper we propose two importance sampling methods for the efficient symbol error rate (SER) estimation of maximum likelihood (ML) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detectors. Conditioned to a given transmitted symbol, computing the SER requires the evaluation of an integral outside a given polytope in a high-dimensional space, for which a closed-form solution does not exist. Therefore, Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is typically used to estimate the SER, although a naive or raw MC implementation can be very inefficient at high signal-to-noise-ratios or for systems with stringent SER requirements. A reduced variance estimator is provided by the Truncated Hypersphere Importance Sampling (THIS) method, which samples from a proposal density that excludes the largest hypersphere circumscribed within the Voronoi region of the transmitted vector. A much more efficient estimator is provided by the existing ALOE (which stands for "At Least One rare Event") method, which samples conditionally on an error taking place. The paper describes in detail these two IS methods, discussing their advantages and limitations, and comparing their performances. The work of V. This paper deals with the problem of censoring outliers in a class of complex multivariate elliptically contoured distributed radar data, which is a vital issue in radar signal processing applications, such as adaptive radar detection and space-time adaptive processing. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimate of the outlier subset is derived resorting to the generalized likelihood function (GLF) criterion. Since the ML estimate involves the solution of a combinatorial problem, a reduced complexity but approximate ML (AML) procedure is also considered. At the analysis stage, the performance of the AML method is evaluated in the presence of both simulated and real radar data, also in comparison with the conventional generalized inner product (GIP) and the reiterative censored GIP (RCGIP) algorithms. The results highlight that the AML technique achieves a satisfactory performance level and can outperform both GIP and RCGIP in some situations.

Machine Type Communications (MTC) is one of the prominent solutions to enable the Internet of Things (IoT). With a large number of IoT applications envisioned over the cellular network, the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has initiated the support for MTC in the Long Term Evolution (LTE)/ LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) standards. A significant portion of the MTC devices is expected to be low-complexity and low-power User Equipment (UE), requiring an energy efficient mode of operation. In addition, many such UEs can be located in the regions of low network coverage. In this paper, we show that an accurate estimation and compensation of the residual carrier frequency offset (CFO) at the base-station (eNB) results in a reduction in energy consumption for MTC devices in low coverage. For robust and accurate CFO estimation in low coverage, we propose a Maximum Likelihood (ML) based CFO estimation technique that works for data and/or pilot repetitions in LTE/LTE-A uplink. Through simulations, we illustrate that our technique shows a significant performance improvement over the conventional CFO estimation technique using the phase angle of the correlation between the repeated data. We determine that residual CFO estimation and compensation at the eNB results in 22.5%–55.2% reduction in energy consumption of the MTC devices, when compared to the case without CFO compensation.

We propose an expectation maximization (EM) strategy for improving the precision of time of flight (ToF) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) scanners. The novel algorithm statistically accounts not only for the bias induced by temperature changes in the laser diode, but also for the multi-modality of the measurement noises that is induced by mode-hopping effects. Instrumental to the proposed EM algorithm, we also describe a general thermal dynamics model that can be learned either from just input-output data or from a combination of simple temperature experiments and information from the laser’s datasheet. We test the strategy on a SICK LMS 200 device and improve its average absolute error by a factor of three.

This thesis deals with the study of estimators' performance in signal processing. The focus is the analysis of the lower bounds on the Mean Square Error (MSE) for abrupt change-point estimation. Such tools will help to characterize performance of maximum likelihood estimator in the frequentist context but also maximum a posteriori and conditional mean estimators in the Bayesian context. The main difficulty comes from the fact that, when dealing with sampled signals, the parameters of interest (i.e., the change points) lie on a discrete space. Consequently, the classical large sample theory results (e.g., asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimator) or the Cramér-Rao bound do not apply. Some results concerning the asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood only are available in the mathematics literature but are currently of limited interest for practical signal processing problems. When the MSE of estimators is chosen as performance criterion, an important amount of work has been provided concerning lower bounds on the MSE in the last years. Then, several studies have proposed new inequalities leading to tighter lower bounds in comparison with the Cramér-Rao bound. These new lower bounds have less regularity conditions and are able to handle estimators’ MSE behavior in both asymptotic and non-asymptotic areas. The goal of this thesis is to complete previous results on lower bounds in the asymptotic area (i.e. when the number of samples and/or the signal-to-noise ratio is high) for change-point estimation but, also, to provide an analysis in the non-asymptotic region. The tools used here will be the lower bounds of the Weiss-Weinstein family which are already known in signal processing to outperform the Cramér-Rao bound for applications such as spectral analysis or array processing. A closed-form expression of this family is provided for a single and multiple change points and some extensions are given when the parameters of the distributions on each segment are unknown. An analysis in terms of robustness with respect to the prior influence on our models is also provided. Finally, we apply our results to specific problems such as: Gaussian data, Poisson data and exponentially distributed data.; Cette thèse porte sur l'étude des performances d'estimateurs en traitement du signal, et s'attache en particulier à étudier les bornes inférieures de l'erreur quadratique moyenne (EQM) pour l'estimation de points de rupture, afin de caractériser le comportement d'estimateurs, tels que celui du maximum de vraisemblance (dans le contexte fréquentiste), mais surtout du maximum a posteriori ou de la moyenne conditionnelle (dans le contexte bayésien). La difficulté majeure provient du fait que, pour un signal échantillonné, les paramètres d'intérêt (à savoir les points de rupture) appartiennent à un espace discret. En conséquence, les résultats asymptotiques classiques (comme la normalité asymptotique du maximum de vraisemblance) ou la borne de Cramér-Rao ne s'appliquent plus. Quelques résultats sur la distribution asymptotique du maximum de vraisemblance provenant de la communauté mathématique sont actuellement disponibles, mais leur applicabilité à des problèmes pratiques de traitement du signal n'est pas immédiate. Si l'on décide de concentrer nos efforts sur l'EQM des estimateurs comme indicateur de performance, un travail important autour des bornes inférieures de l'EQM a été réalisé ces dernières années. Plusieurs études ont ainsi permis de proposer des inégalités plus précises que la borne de Cramér-Rao. Ces dernières jouissent en outre de conditions de régularité plus faibles, et ce, même en régime non asymptotique, permettant ainsi de délimiter la plage de fonctionnement optimal des estimateurs. Le but de cette thèse est, d'une part, de compléter la caractérisation de la zone asymptotique (en particulier lorsque le rapport signal sur bruit est élevé et/ou pour un nombre d'observations infini) dans un contexte d'estimation de points de rupture. D'autre part, le but est de donner les limites fondamentales de l'EQM d'un estimateur dans la plage non asymptotique. Les outils utilisés ici sont les bornes inférieures de l’EQM de la famille Weiss-Weinstein qui est déjà connue pour être plus précise que la borne de Cramér-Rao dans les contextes, entre autres, de l’analyse spectrale et du traitement d’antenne. Nous fournissons une forme compacte de cette famille dans le cas d’un seul et de plusieurs points de ruptures puis, nous étendons notre analyse aux cas où les paramètres des distributions sont inconnus. Nous fournissons également une analyse de la robustesse de cette famille vis-à-vis des lois a priori utilisées dans nos modèles. Enfin, nous appliquons ces bornes à plusieurs problèmes pratiques : données gaussiennes, poissonniennes et processus exponentiels.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) employs array signal processing techniques, in order to estimate the location of the vertical structures that compose the backscattering field, in the direction perpendicular to the line-of-sight (PLOS). Due to the limited number of tracks for practical TomoSAR sensing scenarios, it becomes challenging to accurately estimate the source parameters. Additionally, irregular sampling and non-uniform acquisition constellations introduce artifacts and increase ambiguity. The usage of super-resolved parametric methods and compressed sensing (CS) based approaches, improve the vertical resolution and mitigate the effect of sidelobes. However, parametric approaches have the main drawback related to the assumption that the scene is composed by a known finite number of point-type backscattering sources. Also, the CS-based techniques regularly imply a considerable computational burden. Overcoming the disadvantages of the above mentioned TomoSAR-adapted methods, this paper presents a novel non-parametric iterative approach for feature enhanced SAR tomography, in the context of maximum likelihood (ML) estimation theory. The feature enhancing capabilities of the proposed technique are corroborated via processing L-band airborne TomoSAR data of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), acquired by the F-SAR system over the forested test site of Froschham, Germany, in 2017.

In a multi-connected, multi-technology, and pervasive mobile infrastructure, such as what is being planned for 5G, artificial intelligence and cognition will play a major role. An important goal of future mobile infrastructures is to self-adapt their characteristics to their operating conditions, at the physical link, as well as at the network and application layers, which gives rise to a new paradigm known as context-aware cognitive radio (CR). CR transceivers (CTRs) mostly incorporate a cognitive engine that relies on various sensorial entities, which attempt to provide sufficient information about the quality of the link through the estimation of various key channel parameters. Two important parameters are required in a wide range of CTR architectures: the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the Doppler spread. Within this context, we tackle the hardware design and integration of a joint data-aided (DA) maximum likelihood (ML) SNR and Doppler spread estimator recently shown to outperform main state-of-the-art solutions both in terms of accuracy and complexity. We propose a deep-pipelined and resource-efficient architecture for the outlined joint DA ML estimator, and we integrate our design on an FPGA-based software-defined radio (SDR) platform. We finally validate and test this prototype in real time under realistic over-the-air propagation conditions reproduced by a highly-scalabile channel emulator. Compared to its MATLAB floating-point version, our hardware prototype suggests negligible losses in performance despite the existence of several hardware impairments, thereby confirming its very strong potential and attractiveness for possible integration in future 5G CTRs.

In this paper, we present an analytical framework for detecting optical unipolar orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (U-OFDM) signals. We derive analytical expressions for time-domain signal estimates based on different schemes including maximum likelihood, maximum a-posteriori and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimation. These schemes are compared with state-of-the-art U-OFDM detection schemes in terms of uncoded bit-error rate (BER). Numerical results show that the MMSE estimate-based scheme exhibits the least BER performance in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime.Furthermore, we consider coded systems and reveal that the coded BER performance of the MMSE scheme is superior to previously proposed receivers. Finally, we propose an iterative decoding scheme with soft-symbol estimation to further improve the performance of coded U-OFDM. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a significant breakthrough to the inherent limitation between high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) compared with conventional SAR. Moving target indication (MTI) is an important application of spaceborne HRWS SAR systems. In contrast to previous studies of SAR MTI, the HRWS SAR mainly faces the problem of under-sampled data of each channel, causing single-channel imaging and processing to be infeasible. In this study, the estimation of velocity is equivalent to the estimation of the cone angle according to their relationship. The maximum likelihood (ML) based algorithm is proposed to estimate the radial velocity in the existence of Doppler ambiguities. After that, the signal reconstruction and compensation for the phase offset caused by radial velocity are processed for a moving target. Finally, the traditional imaging algorithm is applied to obtain a focused moving target image. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of the estimator under different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Furthermore, the performance is analyzed with respect to the motion ship that experiences interference due to different distributions of sea clutter. The results verify that the proposed algorithm is accurate and efficient with low computational complexity. This paper aims at providing a solution to the velocity estimation problem in the future HRWS SAR systems with multiple receive channels.

The primary aim of this study is to explore and investigate the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation and the Bayesian approach to estimating the parameters of log-logistic distribution and to calculate the approximate intervals for the parameters and the survival function based on adaptive progressive type-II censored data. The ML estimators of the parameters of the probability distribution were obtained via the Newton–Raphson Method. The approximate confidence intervals for the reliability function were calculated using the delta method. The Bayes estimators based on squared error loss function (SELF) and the approximate credible intervals for the unknown parameters and the survival function using the Bayesian approach were constructed using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. A Monte Carlo study was performed to examine the proposed methods under different situations, based on mean-squared error, bias, coverage probability, and expected length-estimated criteria. The Bayesian approach appears to be better than the likelihood for estimating the log-logistic model parameters. An application to real data was included.

This study discusses the localization problem based on time delay and Doppler shift for a far-field scenario. The conventional location methods employ two steps that first extract intermediate parameters from the received signals and then determine the source position from the measured parameters. As opposed to the traditional two-step methods, the direct position determination (DPD) methods accomplish the localization in a single step without computing intermediate parameters. However, the DPD cost function often remains non-convex, thereby it will cost a high amount of computational resources to find the estimated position through traversal search. Weiss proposed a DPD estimator to mitigate the computational complexity via eigenvalue decomposition. Unfortunately, when the computational resources are rather limited, Weiss&rsquo, s method fails to satisfy the timeliness. To solve this problem, this paper develops a DPD estimator using expectation maximization (EM) algorithm based on time delay and Doppler shift. The proposed method starts from choosing the transmitter-receiver range vector as the hidden variable. Then, the cost function is separated and simplified via the hidden variable, accomplishing the transformation from the high dimensional nonlinear search problem into a few one dimensional search subproblems. Finally, the expressions of EM repetition are obtained through Laplace approximation. In addition, we derive the Cram&eacute, r&ndash, Rao bound to evaluate the best localization performance in this paper. Simulation results confirm that, on the basis of guaranteeing high accuracy, the proposed algorithm makes a good compromise in localization performance and computational complexity.

Cardinality estimation schemes of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags using Framed Slotted ALOHA (FSA) based protocol are studied in this paper. Not as same as previous estimation schemes, we consider tag cardinality estimation problem under not only detection errors but also capture effect, where a tag's IDentity (ID) might not be detected even in a singleton slot, while it might be identified even in a collision slot due to the fading of wireless channels. Maximum Likelihood (ML) approach is utilized for the estimation of the detection error probability, the capture effect probability, and the tag cardinality. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated under different system parameters via computer simulations to show the method's effectiveness comparing to other conventional approaches.

Entomophthoromycota is one of six major phylogenetic lineages among the former phylum Zygomycota. These early terrestrial fungi share evolutionarily ancestral characters such as coenocytic mycelium and gametangiogamy as a sexual process resulting in zygospore formation. Previous molecular studies have shown the monophyly of Entomophthoromycota, thus justifying raising the taxonomic status of these fungi to a phylum. Multi-gene phylogenies have identified five major lineages of Entomophthoromycota. In this review we provide a detailed discussion about the biology and taxonomy of these lineages: I) Basidiobolus (Basidiobolomycetes: Basidiobolaceae; primarily saprobic); II) Conidiobolus (Entomophthoromycetes, Ancylistaceae; several clades of saprobes and invertebrate pathogens), as well as three rapidly evolving entomopathogenic lineages in the family Entomophthoraceae centering around; III) Batkoa; IV) Entomophthora and allied genera; and V) the subfamily Erynioideae which includes Zoophthora and allied genera. Molecular phylogenic analysis has recently determined the relationships of several taxa that were previously unresolved based on morphology alone: Eryniopsis, Macrobiotophthora, Massospora, Strongwellsea and two as yet undescribed genera of Basidiobolaceae.

A rápida evolução dos sistemas de telecomunicações culminou numa necessidade cada vez mais crescente por redes que permitam elevados débitos. Associado a esse throughput elevado está o custo energético que gradualmente torna os sistemas pouco eficientes energeticamente. As modulações espaciais generalizadas (Generalized Spatial Modulation -GSM) surgem da necessidade de criar comunicações mais “verdes”, permitindo obter melhores eficiências energéticas através da redução do número de cadeias de blocos radio-frequência (RF) utilizadas no emissor. O estudo apresentado neste trabalho pretende realçar, num primeiro ponto, a importância da evolução dos sistemas de transmissão MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) como forma de aumento do throughput global de uma rede de telecomunicações mantendo uma eficiência energética alta, com foco em GSM. O segundo ponto consiste no estudo de um algoritmo baseado no método ADMM (Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers), como recetor de baixa complexidade para esquemas GSM com desempenho próximo do ótimo, o detetor de máxima verosimilhança (MLD). O estudo do recetor ADMM foi efetuado em duas fases, sendo que a primeira é referente ao estudo extensivo e exclusivo do recetor ADMM, com principal enfoque nos vários parâmetros que o definem. Na segunda fase é feita uma comparação para vários cenários entre o recetor ADMM e alguns dos recetores de baixa complexidade mais conhecidos, entre eles o OB-MMSE (Ordered Block MMSE) e o BPDN (Basis Pursuit De-Noising), por exemplo. A realização de simulações, com os vários recetores, em vários cenários permitiu concluir que o ADMM, com recurso às suas técnicas de refinamento, representa uma alternativa eficiente, e em certos casos superior, ao OB-MMSE principalmente para cenários com um elevado número de bits por símbolo espacial. The fast evolution of telecommunications systems resulted in a growing need for networks that support high transmission rates. Associated with this high throughput is the energy cost that gradually makes this systems less energy-efficient . The Generalized Spatial Modulation (GSM) arises from the need to create more "green" communication, allowing best energy efficiencies. The study presented in this thesis aims to highlight firstly, the importance of the development of MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) transmission systems capable of increasing the overall throughput of a telecommunications network while maintaining high energy efficiency, focusing on GSM. The second relevant aspect is the study of an algorithm based on the ADMM (Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers) method, as a solution for a low complexity receiver for GSM schemes with a performance close to the optimal one, the maximum likelihood detector (MLD). The ADMM receiver study was conducted in two phases, the first of which refers to the extensive and unique study of the ADMM receiver, with main focus on the various parameters that define it. In the second stage a comparison is made between the settings for various ADMM receivers and some of the known low-complexity receivers, including OB-MMSE (Ordered Block MMSE) and BPDN (Basis Pursuit De-noising), for example. The results obtained from the evaluations performed several scenarios allow us to conclude that the ADMM based receiver combined with refinement techniques, is an efficient alternative and in some cases with better performance than the OB-MMSE receiver, especially for scenarios with a large number of bits per spatial symbol.

Separation of savanna land cover components is challenging due to the high heterogeneity of this landscape and spectral similarity of compositionally different vegetation types. In this study, we tested the usability of very high spatial and spectral resolution WorldView-2 (WV-2) imagery to classify land cover components of African savanna in wet and dry season. We compared the performance of Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) and pixel-based approach with several algorithms: k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), maximum likelihood (ML), random forests (RF), classification and regression trees (CART) and support vector machines (SVM). Results showed that classifications of WV-2 imagery produce high accuracy results (> 77%) regardless of the applied classification approach. However, OBIA had a significantly higher accuracy for almost every classifier with the highest overall accuracy score of 93%. Amongst tested classifiers, SVM and RF provided highest accuracies. Overall classifications of the wet season image provided better results with 93% for RF. However, considering woody leaf-off conditions, the dry season classification also performed well with overall accuracy of 83% (SVM) and high producer accuracy for the tree cover (91%). Electroencephalograms (EEGs) measure a brain signal that contains abundant information about the human brain function and health. For this reason, recent clinical brain research and brain computer interface (BCI) studies use EEG signals in many applications. Due to the significant noise in EEG traces, signal processing to enhance the signal to noise power ratio (SNR) is necessary for EEG analysis, especially for non-invasive EEG. A typical method to improve the SNR is averaging many trials of event related potential (ERP) signal that represents a brain's response to a particular stimulus or a task. The averaging, however, is very sensitive to variable delays. In this study, we propose two time delay estimation (TDE) schemes based on a joint maximum likelihood (ML) criterion to compensate the uncertain delays which may be different in each trial. We evaluate the performance for different types of signals such as random, deterministic, and real EEG signals. The results show that the proposed schemes provide better performance than other conventional schemes employing averaged signal as a reference, e.g., up to 4 dB gain at the expected delay error of 10 degrees.

Evolution of pathogens in prokaryotic bacteria was studied by 16srRNA genes. In this study rrsA genes of 45 bacteria were considered, which includes pathogens, non-pathogens and out-group bacteria. We considered non-pathogenic bacteria, for each class in bacterial classification, to support the pathogenic evolution. In this investigation, aligned nucleotide sequences of rrsA genes were used for Phylogenetic analysis and they have been clustered precisely. Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Maximum Parsimony (MP) methods were employed for the molecular evolution of pathogenic bacteria. The best-fit substitution model with the lowest Bayesian Information Criterion scores is considered to describe the substitution pattern the best, and non-uniformity of evolutionary rates among sites were modeled by using a discrete Gamma distribution. Nearest Neighbor Interchange (NNI) heuristic method was used to generate the tree for ML and Close Neighbor Interchange (CNI) on random trees search methods for MP. Further both the phylogenetic trees were statistically evaluated for accuracy by bootstrap value. Transition and transversion ratio of the rrsA genes have been estimated for the mutation frequency over the evolution by Maximum Composite Likelihood (MCL) bias and ML bias. Combined pathogenic and non pathogenic bacteria analysis reflected the clear diversity of bacteria over time and agrees with morphological and cytological data. These molecular evolution results should be useful to study the evolution pattern of pathogenic bacteria.

For InSAR topographic mapping, multi-baseline InSAR height estimation is known to be an effective way to facilitate phase unwrapping by significantly increasing the ambiguity intervals and maintaining good height measurement sensitivity, especially in mountainous areas. In this paper, an efficient multi-baseline SAR interferometry approach based on maximum likelihood estimation is developed for refined topographic mapping in mountainous areas. In the algorithm, maximum likelihood (ML) height estimation is used to measure the topographic details and avoid the complicated phase unwrapping process. In order to be well-adapted to the mountainous terrain conditions, the prior height probability is re-defined to take the local terrain conditions and neighboring height constraint into consideration in the algorithm. In addition, three strategies are used to optimize the maximum likelihood height estimation process to obtain higher computational efficiency, so that this method is more suitable for spaceborne InSAR data. The strategies include substituting a rational function model into the complicated conversion process from candidate height to interferometric phase, discretizing the continuous height likelihood probability, and searching for the maximum likelihood height with a flexible step length. The experiment with simulated data is designed to verify the improvement of the ML height estimation accuracy with the re-defined prior height distribution. Then the optimized processing procedure is tested with the multi-baseline L-band ALOS/PALSAR data covering the Mount Tai area in China. The height accuracy of the generated multi-baseline InSAR DEM can meet both standards of American DTED-2 and Chinese national 1:50,000 DEM (mountain) Level 2.

The ML-EM (maximum likelihood expectation maximization) algorithm is the most popular image reconstruction method when the measurement noise is Poisson distributed. This short paper considers the problem that for a given noisy projection data set, whether the ML-EM algorithm is able to provide an approximate solution that is close to the true solution. It is well-known that the ML-EM algorithm at early iterations converges towards the true solution and then in later iterations diverges away from the true solution. Therefore a potential good approximate solution can only be obtained by early termination. This short paper argues that the ML-EM algorithm is not optimal in providing such an approximate solution. In order to show that the ML-EM algorithm is not optimal, it is only necessary to provide a different algorithm that performs better. An alternative algorithm is suggested in this paper and this alternative algorithm is able to outperform the ML-EM algorithm.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques are a key enabling technology for high-rate wireless communications. This paper discusses two ASIC implementations of MIMO sphere decoders. The first ASIC attains maximum-likelihood performance with an average throughput of 73 Mb/s at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 20 dB; the second ASIC shows only a negligible bit-error-rate degradation and achieves a throughput of 170 Mb/s at the same SNR. The three key contributing factors to high throughput and low complexity are: depth-first tree traversal with radius reduction, implemented in a one-node-per-cycle architecture, the use of the /spl lscr//sup /spl infin//-instead of /spl lscr//sup 2/-norm, and, finally, the efficient implementation of the enumeration approach recently proposed in . The resulting ASICs currently rank among the fastest reported MIMO detector implementations.

This paper investigates the validity of the random-volume-over-ground (RVoG) scattering model assumption for forest scattering on polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PolInSAR) data. The model makes some assumptions about the data and the structure of coherency matrices, namely, the equality of the polarimetric covariance matrices and the affine equivalence of the contracted polarimetric interferometric covariance matrix with a Hermitian matrix. The proposed methodology is divided into two main steps. First, invertible affine transforms (ATs) are studied and proposed as a tool to operate with coherence regions. Based on this analysis, the concept of the trace matrix is introduced as its rank depends on the RVoG model assumption validity. Then, with the objective to consider the effects of speckle noise, we consider a maximum-likelihood (ML) framework, on the hypothesis of data distributed according to the complex Gaussian distribution. Hence, we define the ML estimator (MLE) of the PolInSAR coherency matrix according to the RVoG model assumption and the generalized likelihood ratio test of the model. The validity tests and the MLE are analyzed in terms of simulated and real PolInSAR data, considering P-band and L-band data over tropical and boreal forests.

Entomophthoromycota is one of six major phylogenetic lineages among the former phylum Zygomycota. These early terrestrial fungi share evolutionarily ancestral characters such as coenocytic mycelium and gametangiogamy as a sexual process resulting in zygospore formation. Previous molecular studies have shown the monophyly of Entomophthoromycota, thus justifying raising the taxonomic status of these fungi to a phylum. Multi-gene phylogenies have identified five major lineages of Entomophthoromycota. In this review we provide a detailed discussion about the biology and taxonomy of these lineages: I) Basidiobolus (Basidiobolomycetes: Basidiobolaceae; primarily saprobic); II) Conidiobolus (Entomophthoromycetes, Ancylistaceae; several clades of saprobes and invertebrate pathogens), as well as three rapidly evolving entomopathogenic lineages in the family Entomophthoraceae centering around; III) Batkoa; IV) Entomophthora and allied genera; and V) the subfamily Erynioideae which includes Zoophthora and allied genera. Molecular phylogenic analysis has recently determined the relationships of several taxa that were previously unresolved based on morphology alone: Eryniopsis, Macrobiotophthora, Massospora, Strongwellsea and two as yet undescribed genera of Basidiobolaceae.
