ilustraciones, fotografías, gráficas, tablas Resumen: Introducción: El absceso cerebral es una entidad poco frecuente en la población pediátrica, pero con alta carga de morbimortalidad. Los avances en el proceso diagnóstico y de tratamiento han causado modificaciones en el curso de la infección; siendo importante conocer las manifestaciones clínicas iniciales y la epidemiología local para realizar un diagnóstico temprano y un tratamiento oportuno, buscando mejorar la sobrevida y evitar secuelas. Objetivo: Determinar las características clínicas y paraclínicas, así como los factores asociados a morbimortalidad de pacientes pediátricos con diagnóstico de absceso cerebral atendidos en HOMI, Fundación Hospital pediátrico de la Misericordia, desde el año 2013 hasta el año 2018. Métodos: Estudio observacional, con componente descriptivo y analítico. Se revisaron las historias clínicas electrónicas de pacientes entre 0 y 18 años de edad con diagnóstico de absceso cerebral atendidos en HOMI durante un período de 5 años. Se tomaron en cuenta los datos de caracterización sociodemográfica, factores de riesgo y variables derivadas del curso de la enfermedad como la presentación clínica, hallazgos microbiológicos, resultados de ayudas diagnósticas, tratamiento recibido y complicaciones. Al final se exploraron las posibles asociaciones con respecto de las variables de interés planteadas. Resultados: Se incluyeron en el estudio 32 pacientes, se realizó una descripción de las características sociodemográficas y antecedentes relevantes de los pacientes. El 37,5% de los pacientes requirieron ingreso a Unidad de Cuidado Intensivo (UCI), la localización más frecuente del absceso fue frontal en el 50% de los pacientes, los síntomas de focalización se resolvieron en una mediana de 40 días. En 75% de los casos se requirió drenaje quirúrgico, se logró la recuperación del agente etiológico en 28%, siendo S. aureus y S. pneumoniae los microorganismos más frecuentes. Durante el curso clínico el 68,8% de los pacientes no tuvo complicaciones, y tras su resolución el 50% no tuvo secuelas neurológicas. Dentro de las secuelas, la más frecuente fue hemiparesia. Conclusión: Este estudio brinda una descripción local de una población pediátrica con absceso cerebral, en la cual se logró establecer asociación de variables clínicas, paraclínicas y de tratamiento con desenlaces negativos como requerimiento de UCI, desarrollo de complicaciones y probabilidad de secuelas neurológicas. Introduction: Brain abscess is a rare entity in the pediatric population, but with a high morbidity and mortality. Advances in the diagnostic and treatment process have caused modifications in the course of the infection; It is important to know the initial clinical manifestations and the local epidemiology to make an early diagnosis and timely treatment, with the purpose to improve survival and avoid sequelae. The electronic medical records of patients between 0 and 18 years of age with a diagnosis of brain abscess treated at HOMI during a 5-year period were reviewed. Sociodemographic characterization data, risk factors and variables derived from the course of the disease were taken into account, such as clinical presentation, microbiological findings, results of diagnostic aids, treatment received and complications. At the end, the possible associations with respect to the variables of interest raised were explored. Results: 32 patients were included in the study, a description of the sociodemographic characteristics and relevant history of the patients was made. 37.5% of the patients required admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the most frequent location of the abscess was frontal in 50% of the patients, the focal symptoms resolved in a median of 40 days. Surgical drainage was required in 75% of the cases, isolation of the etiological agent was achieved in 28%, with S. aureus and S. pneumoniae being the most frequent microorganisms. During the clinical course, 68.8% of the patients had no complications, and after their resolution, 50% had no neurological sequelae. Among the sequelae, the most frequent was hemiparesis. Conclusion: This study provides a local description of a pediatric population with brain abscess, in which it was possible to establish an association of clinical, paraclinical and treatment variables with negative outcomes such as ICU requirement, development of complications and probability of neurological sequelae. Introduction: The causes that lead to the admission of young adults into Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are a multivariable phenomenon of modern times with a variety of social extensions.Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of admission of young adult population aged 18-30 in Intensive Care Units.Method and material: The studied population consisted of people aged 18-30 years who were hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit of Attica, Greece during the years 2016 and 2017. A specially formatted registration form was used to collect the data, which except for the demographic data, included variables related to the reasons of admission to ICU, the duration of the hospitalization, as well as the final outcome. The SPSS 23 statistical package and the x2 method were used to analyze the data.Results: The 71.1% of the study population were male and 28.9% female. Regarding nationality, 81.1% were Greeks, while 18.9% were foreigners. As a first cause of admission to ICU was the road traffic accidents with percentage of 41.2%, followed by pathological causes with 32%, postoperative monitoring with 16.2%, suicide attempts at 4.4%, drug abuse at 3.5%, and work-related accidents at 2.6%.
