This article analyses a hoard recently found during irregular excavations in the Gaza Strip or along the coast of Egyptian Sinai. The hoard includes 61 solidi issued from Focas to Constantine IV as well as 1 tremissis of Constantine IV, minted between 603 and 674. The hoard had been probably deposited towards the end of the reign of Constantine IV (681) and testifies to the availability of Byzantine gold coins in Palestinian monetary circulation in the 2nd half of the 7th century, under Umayyad rule.

session : Conditions for the adoption of money, crossed contributions from weighted metal to Ancient coins; International audience; This paper aims to present the AUREUS program, founded by the Centre-Val de Loire Region and lead by Pr. A. Suspène, and its first results. AUREUS’ ambition is to under-stand the establishment of the first unitary gold mint in Western Europe, which provided the Roman gold coinage. By confronting approaches from historians, numismatists andresearchers in archaeological science from several universities, French institutions and laboratories (University of Orléans, University of Tours, CNRS, Department of Coins, Medals and Antiquities of the National Library of France), the AUREUS program allows us to establish the evolution of the gold coinage production in the western part of the Mediterranean basin between the end of the IVth century BC and the Ist century AD. This multidisciplinary approach will allow us to compare historical data with the chemical analysis obtained by Laser Ablation Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), undertook in the IRAMAT-CEB laboratory at Orléans. At the end of this project, almost 1000 coins from the main gold coinage area (Africa, Greece, Italy, Sicily, Celtic world, Spain) and pieces of jewellery from French patrimonial collections (mainly from the Department of Coins, Medals and Antiquities of the National Library of France) will have been chemically analysed in order to acquire a fingerprint of the gold material used by the artisans. In the course of this program, the classification of the material will be re-examined and improved. Further more the AUREUS program will provide decisive information on the supply of gold metal; on the control of gold stocks; on the role of war in gold transfers; on the degree of economic and political integration of the different areas concerned; and last on the economic, political, military and social uses of gold in antiquity

An essay on the pre-imperial gold coinage of the Roman empire.

The aim of this paper is to assess the monetary processes occurring in Northern Gaul during the late Iron Age by combining typological and archaeometrical studies of gold coinage. Specialists in ancient numismatics usually stress out some specific features of monetization in Northern Gaul, which do not apply to other parts of Gaul. Among these characteristics are the important functions played by gold coins among other denominations. Using an interdisciplinary approach, which benefits from renewed archaeological data as well as measurements of the alloy of almost 600 gold coins, we wish to emphasize the major trends in monetary behaviours in Northern Gaul throughout this period, both in terms of switching monetary policies and expanding uses of coinage., L’objectif de cet article est de retracer les dynamiques monétaires mises en oeuvre dans le Nord de la Gaule à la fin de l’âge du Fer à travers l’étude typologique et archéométrique des monnaies d’or. Les études numismatiques consacrées à cet espace soulignent généralement sa spécificité à l’échelle de la Gaule, qui tient notamment à l’importance de l’or monnayé parmi l’ensemble des dénominations produites. The Rhodian plinthophoroi dated to the beginning of the 1st century BC, were struck in considerable quantities because of the huge expenditure demanded, as the Rhodians were facing Mithridates’ danger. We may estimate the date of striking before the siege of the island by pontic forces to ca. 90 BC. The plinthophoric hemidrachms were adapted to the weight of Roman sestertii, given that this denomination had been introduced again in silver. It seems that the eventual financial difficulty of the Rhodian State was remedied by the support also of a part of inhabitants, not citizens (foreigners etc., members of associations or not). So the coinage needed was ensured according to epigraphic and numismatic evidence., Les monnaies rhodiennes plinthophores, du début du Ier siècle av. 1252 is known as the date for the return to gold in Western Europe : in that year Genoa and Florence began to produce their gold coins, opening a new era in Western European monetary history. African, Islamic, Byzantine, Crusader gold coins, however, never ceased to circulate within the Mediterranean. This study deals with gold coinages struck in Northern Gaul. This territory, first referred to as ‘Belgic Gaul’ in Caesar’s writings, is located between the Seine and the Rhine. Specialists in ancient numismatics usually stress out various specific features displayed in this region, such as the unusually large amounts of gold coins which were issued there, as well as their peculiar iconography. This work investigates the implications underlying this important episode in Gaul’s monetary history, from its emergence during the 3rd century BC to its end at the beginning of the Roman period.In order to enhance our knowledge about monetary uses and history in Northern Gaul, a comprehensive account is thus proposed, which combines renewed typological and metrological studies with distribution maps, based on the most recent data available at this point. Besides, our interdisciplinary approach involves elemental analysis performed on a sample of 571 gold coins. The aim is to characterize trends in the composition of all gold issues struck in Northern Gaul, so as to identify chronological and regional patterns in monetary policies. By doing so, it thus becomes possible to stress out a distinctive set of strategies used by local authorities in order to control monetary production and to secure gold supplies through time. By combining iconographic, metrological and analytical studies, a new picture eventually emerges as regards dynamics in coin production and uses in Northern Gaul.; Cette étude est consacrée aux monnayages d'or frappés dans le Nord de la Gaule. Il s’agit d’un phénomène majeur à l’échelle de la Gaule, que l’on cherche à appréhender depuis son apparition, au IIIe siècle avant notre ère, jusqu’à son terme au début de l’époque romaine. Afin de mener une réflexion sur les pratiques monétaires de cette région, nous proposons une nouvelle synthèse de l'histoire des monnaies d'or dans le Nord de la Gaule. Celle-ci passe par le réexamen des classements typologiques et des études métrologiques, ainsi que par l'élaboration de nouvelles cartes de répartition basées sur les trouvailles monétaires les plus récentes.L’approche interdisciplinaire développée dans le cadre de ce travail se traduit également par le recours aux analyses élémentaires, effectuées sur un corpus de 571 monnaies, afin d’étudier la composition de l’ensemble des émissions du Nord de la Gaule, reflets des différentes politiques monétaires mises en oeuvre dans chaque région. We set out a simple four sector macro model of the economy of the Roman Empire during a period of considerable economic prosperity. Our focus is on gold coins as currency and the seignor- age which the government used to fund its activities. We solve numerically for a balanced growth representation of the economy of the empire, a solution that captures the intricacies of money creation, currency expansion and seignorage. We subscribe to the view that the exhaustion of low-cost gold and silver deposits contributed significantly to the ending of the economic prosper- ity enjoyed by Roman Italy and its provinces during the so-called Pax Romana (31 BC to 165 CE) and we attempt to capture sig- nificant shifts in variables during the decline.

A survey of the typological development of the gold coinage issued under Trajan.

The first gold coin is attributed to Croesus (560-546) king of Lydia whose fabulous wealth created one of the most legendary characters of History. One century later Lydia became a province of the Persian Empire which spread from Asia Minor to the Indus and from Egypt to the Danube. The hanker after this empire rich in mining resources gave rise to one golden age in the Antiquity under Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) and another in the Middle Ages all over the Muslim conquest (660-750 AD). With the coupling of 1 2 MeV proton activation analysis with LA-ICP-MS we tried to characterise the gold used to strike the coinages made during those historical periods in order to study the debasement of the coins and the provenance of the ores. Only one coinage struck in the Antiquity presented a debasement : the double-darics attributed to the Babylonian mint. Using the concentration of the trace elements present in the metal we could check the re-use of Persian treasures to strike the Alexander's type staters and show the use of two types of gold in the Macedonian mints. For the Near and Middle Eastern Muslim dinars we could suggest the use of three different gold ores in their fabrication., La naissance de la monnaie d'or est attribuée à Crésus (560-546 avant J.-C), roi de Lydie, qui trouvait dans son royaume les richesses qui firent de lui un personnage légendaire. Un siècle plus tard, cette région devenait province de l'Empire Perse qui s'étendait de l'Asie mineure à la vallée de l'Indus et de l'Egypte au Danube. Cet empire fut convoité aussi bien dans l'Antiquité qu'au Moyen- Age, et, que ce soit sous Alexandre le Grand (356-323 avant J.-C.) ou à l'époque des conquêtes arabes (660-750 après J.-C), cette partie du monde célèbre pour ses richesses minières, connue son âge d'or. L'association de l'analyse par activation aux protons de 12 MeV et de la technique LA-ICP-MS, nous permet de l'or utilisé pour la frappe des monnayages frappés par ces deux empires. Ainsi nous avons étudié les modes de dévaluation monétaires et abordé le délicat problème des provenances des matières premières. Dans l'Antiquité, nous avons observé qu'un seul monnayage d'or, attribué à Babylone, les double-dariques, est L'étude des provenances nous a permis de conforter certaines théories, comme celle de la réutilisation des trésors perses pour la frappe des statères au type d'Alexandre et mettre en évidence deux ors différents en Macédoine.
