The Niutitang Formation shale is often filled with calcite minerals, which significantly affects the physical and mechanical properties of shale reservoirs. To correctly understand the microscale fracture characteristics of the Niutitang Formation shale and the evolution of acoustic emission signals, this paper uses digital image processing technology to characterize the geometric characteristics and nonuniform distribution of calcite minerals in the shale at the microscale and then maps it to finite elements; uniaxial compression tests of different calcite vein inclination angles are carried out on a microscale. The results show that under the microscale structure, the changes in compressive strength and brittleness index of the Niutitang Formation shale with different calcite vein dip angles are all N-shaped. The calcite veins affect the distribution of the stress field, leading to significant differences in the shale fracture process and fracture mode. The shale fracture process can be divided into two types. The first type (0°, 15°, 30°, 45°) is that the shale matrix is destroyed first, and then, the calcite veins are destroyed; the second type (60°, 75°, 90°) is that the calcite veins are destroyed first, and then, the shale matrix is destroyed. Shale fracture modes can be divided into w-type, v-type, inverted v-type, and inverted z-type. The inclination angle of calcite veins has a significant influence on the AE evolution characteristics of the Niutitang Formation shale. According to the characteristics of the AE active period, it can be divided into two types: surge type and step type. The surge type has a short active period, the number of AE count surges is small, the AE peak is large, and the failure mode is relatively simple. The step type has a long active period, the number of AE count surges is large, and the AE peak is small, and the failure mode is relatively complicated. The research results provide important theoretical guidance for shale gas fracturing mining.

To reveal the effect of confining pressure on the mechanical properties and rupture modes of quartz-bearing shale, the shale core of the no. 3 block of Fenggang, Guizhou Province, China, was analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance, polarized light microscope thin section observation and identification, and core X-ray whole-rock minerals diffraction analysis to determine the distribution of shale minerals in the Niutitang Formation. On the microscale, based on digital image processing technology, this paper characterizes the nonuniformity of minerals in shale, a numerical model that can reflect the true microstructure of shale. Then, the failure process of shale under different confining pressures was simulated. The results show that when the shale is loaded with vertical displacement under different confining pressures, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the sample change significantly. The failure mode can be roughly divided into three types: the inverted V-shaped (0 MPa, 2 MPa, and 4 MPa), V-shaped (6 MPa and 8 MPa), and inverted Z-shaped (10 MPa). Since the development of fractal theory provides a new space for studying the damage and fracture of rocks, the damage evolution and failure process of shale can also be regarded as the fractal process of cracks, in which the fractal dimension is the core parameter. The calculation is different under different stress levels. The fractal dimension under the condition of confining pressure shows that the value of the fractal dimension is greatly affected by the effect of confining pressure. When the fractal dimension is higher, the fracture mode is more complicated, and the internal damage degree is more serious. The research results provide important theoretical guidance for shale gas fracturing production.

To analyze the effect of small faults in the working face on coal and gas outbursts, the coal and gas outburst accident in the 21431 working face was studied with the 3DEC numerical simulation method, and the main research contents were the change laws of both stresses at the small fault and the overburden strata movement rate in the small fault zone of which the drop height and the strike were designed into different groups. The results show that the risk of small fault slip increases with the advancing working face. In addition, there is a positive correlation between the risk and the small fault throw. The movement rate of overburden strata in the small fault zone increases along with the rising of the small fault throw, which increases the energy transferred to the coal seam from the surrounding rock under the effect of the small fault. Hence, the effect of small faults on the working face on coal and gas outbursts was positively correlated with the small fault throw. Under the influence of a small fault strike, the closer it is to the small fault along the dip distance at the same working face, the greater the risk will be of a coal and gas outburst. And the bigger the small fault strike is, the greater is the stress concentration degree in front of the working face and the more the elastic energy is stored and the greater is the possibility of an outburst. The paper analyzes the influence of small faults on coal and gas outbursts in the working face, which has reference significance for the prediction and prevention of coal and gas outburst disaster in the working face.

Evaluation of the performance of existing support in underground tunnels is of great importance for production and interests. Based on field investigation, the shape and number of joints and fractures were investigated in the mining area. Then, the stability of each structural blocks is analyzed by 3D wedge stability analysis software (Unwedge). Moreover, a new analysis method based on critical block theory is applied to analyze the stability of excavated laneways in continuous and discontinuous rock and monitor the stress changes in a fractured tunnel rock mass. The test results indicate that the 3D wedge stability analysis software for underground excavation can evaluate deep tunnel support. Besides, there is no direct relation between the size of the block and the instability of the tunnel. The support method, on large and thick key blocks, needs to be improved. In a broken tunnel section, U-shaped steel support can effectively promote the stress state of the surrounding rock. By monitoring the surrounding rock, it is proven that the vibrating string anchor stress monitoring system is an efficient and real-time method for tunnel stability evaluation.

The mechanical properties and failure modes of shale that contains bedding were analyzed under coupled seepage pressure and stress. In the numerical model, seven sets of shale samples with different dip‐bedding values were considered, and a seepage‐stress coupling numerical simulation was carried out. The results showed that the compressive strength of shale exhibited obvious anisotropy with increase in the bedding angle, and the compressive strength decreased with an increase in the osmotic pressure. The elastic modulus of shale showed an increasing trend with increase in the bedding angle, while the osmotic pressure had little effect on the elastic modulus of shale. The results also showed that weak bedding had a significant impact on the shale failure mode. When the osmotic pressure was 4 MPa, the shale fracture mode showed five failure modes. When the osmotic pressure was 8 MPa, the shale fracture mode exhibited four failure modes. When the osmotic pressure was 12 MPa, the shale fracture mode showed four failure modes. As the osmotic pressure increased, the osmotic pressure played a leading role in the shale rupture process. The spatial distribution of the acoustic emission demonstrated some self‐similarity patterns, and its fractal characteristics were analyzed. It was found that the fractal dimension better reflects the rupture damage to the shale. The larger the fractal dimension is, the more severe the rupture of shale.

The existence of bedding in shale plays an important role in the physical properties and destruction processes of shale. In order to study the failure mechanism of shale with different dip angles under the coupling of seepage and stress, the study uses RFPA2D‐Flow software to advance the seepage‐stress coupling numerical simulation for seven groups of different bedding direction shale. Research shows that (1) the compressive strength and elastic modulus of shale are significantly affected by the bedding directions. The compressive strength can be observed with the apparent anisotropy of the shale compressive strength with the change of the bedding angle α; the elastic modulus increase with the increase in α as a whole. (2) The ultimate failure mode of shale under different bedding angles can be divided into V type (0°), inverted V type (15°), multi‐line type (30°), oblique type I (45°, 90°), and oblique N type (60°, 75°); the failure of shale in each group direction is mainly tensile failure with a small amount of shear failure. It can be found that the spatial distribution of acoustic emission (AE) reflected the macroscopic failure mode of shale. (3) The fractal dimension can well reflect the failure mode of the sample. From the trend of the dip‐fractal dimension curve, the fractal dimension of the multi‐line type reach to maximum, which is 1.41 699, and the D value of the oblique type I is the smallest, between 1.28 191 and 1.286 181. And the values of the inverted V type, V type and oblique N type, between 1.286 181 and 1.41 699. Therefore, the larger the value is, the more complex the shale failure mode is.

In this study, the analysis and control of stability of surrounding rock in deep fractured soft rock roadway located in the underground mine of Jinfeng gold mine in Guizhou Province, China, has been investigated. The surrounding rock of roadway has been analyzed to characterize its deformation and failure mechanism through field survey, testing of rock physical and mechanical properties, in situ stress measure, analysis of mineral components of rock, and investigation of rock fragmentation degree. Based on the numerical simulation technology, the influence of different factors on the stability of roadway is studied. The physical and mechanical properties of surrounding rock and the bearing capacity of surrounding rock layer are to be improved to maintain the stability of broken soft rock roadway as high ground stress, rock fragmentation, and poor lithology leading to tunnel instability. Hence, a high-strength “cable bolt + fiber-reinforced shotcrete + steel mesh + split sets + resin bolt + cement grouting” combined support system has been proposed to improve the effective bearing structure significantly with high integrity and bearing capacity.

Tensile strength is an important parameter that affects the initiation and propagation of shale reservoir fractures during hydraulic fracturing. Shale is often filled with minerals such as calcite. To explore the effect of calcite minerals on the tensile strength and failure mode of shale, in this paper, lower Cambrian shale cores were observed by microslice observations and core X-ray whole-rock mineral diffraction analysis, and 7 groups of numerical direct tensile tests were performed on simulated shale samples with different azimuth angles. The test results show that as the azimuth angle α increases, the tensile strength of the samples gradually decreases, and the fracture rate also shows a decreasing trend. The failure modes can be summarized as root-shaped (0° and 15°), step-shaped (30 and 45°), fishbone-shaped (60°), and river-shaped (75° and 90°) fracturing. The smaller the azimuth angle α, the easier it is for hydraulic fractures to propagate along the direction of the calcite veins and inhibit the formation of fracture networks in the shale matrix. Considering the correlation between the acoustic emission characteristics and failure mode, the fractal dimension is used to reflect the microscopic failure mode of shale. The larger the fractal dimension, the higher the fracture rate is, the more microcracks exist at the edge of the main crack, the more severe the internal damage is, and the more complex the failure mode of the sample is. As the azimuth angle α increases, the fractal dimension shows a decreasing trend, and the crack becomes smoother. This research has important reference value for the study of hydraulic fracture initiation mechanisms and natural fracture propagation.

Shale reservoirs are characterized by extremely low permeability and high clay content. To further study the stress sensitivity of a shale reservoir, the Lower Cambrian shale in north Guizhou was utilized. Through laboratory testing, the relationships between the shale porosity and permeability and the effective stress were established, and the stress sensitivity of shale was analysed. The mechanical properties and mineral composition of this shale were studied by rock mechanics testing and X-ray diffraction. The main factors affecting the stress sensitivity were analysed. The results show that the porosity and permeability of this shale decrease with increasing effective stress; the shale reservoir permeability damage rate is 61.44 ~ 73.93%, with an average of 69.92%; the permeability stress sensitivity coefficient is 0.04867 ~ 0.05485 MPa−1, with an average of 0.05312 MPa−1; and the shale reservoir stress sensitivity is strong. Shale stress sensitivity is related to the rock mineral composition and rock mechanical properties. The higher the clay content in the mineral composition, the lower the elastic modulus of shale, the higher the compressibility, and the greater the stress sensitivity coefficient.

Fractures not only control the distribution of oil and gas reservoirs, but also are key points in the research of oil and gas reservoir development programmes. The tectonic fractures in the Lower Cambrian shale reservoirs in the Feng'gang No. 3 block are effective reservoir spaces for hydrocarbon accumulation, and these fractures are controlled by palaeotectonic stress fields. Therefore, quantitatively predicting the development and distribution of tectonic fractures in the Lower Cambrian shale reservoir is important for the exploration and exploitation of shale gas in the Feng'gang No. 3 block. In the present study, a reasonable geological, mechanical and mathematical model of the study area was established based on the faults systems interpreted from seismic data, fracture characteristics from drilling data, uniaxial and triaxial compression tests and experiments on the acoustic emissions (AE) of rocks. Then, a three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method is applied to simulate the palaeotectonic stress field with the superposition of the Yanshan and Himalayan movements and used to predict the fracture distribution. The simulation results indicate that the maximum principal stress value within the study area ranged from 269.97 MPa to 281.18 MPa, the minimum principal stress ranged from 58.29 MPa to 79.64 MPa, and the shear stress value ranged from 91.05 MPa to 106.21 MPa. The palaeotectonic stress field is controlled by the fault zone locations. The fracture development zones are mainly controlled by the tectonic stress fields and are located around the faults, at the end of the fault zones, at the inflection point and at the intersection of the fault zones.

With the effects of high geostress and intensive dynamic disturbances in deep mining, the stability and safety of tunnels are seriously affected. The optimization for U-shaped steel support is of vital significance and can solve the problems of cost reduction and tunnel instability. Based on the perturbation equation, a coupled formula for U-shaped steel and the surrounding rock mass was proposed to evaluate the practical stability of a U-shaped steel support. Through a numerical simulation method, the characteristics of U-shaped steel support can be obtained under coupled static-dynamic loading. Furthermore, the field test was carried out and compared with the numerical simulation, which was discussed. The results show that there will be a stress concentration when the contact area is small. In addition, the concentrated stress will release with the increase in contact area. With the increase in the lateral stress coefficient, the deformation exhibits a downward trend under static loading, indicating that the lateral stress is the dominant force driving the deep geostress activity. The support requirement of this section of surrounding rock can be satisfied by a U-shaped steel group with 1.5 m spacing under dynamic disturbance.

To accurately detect the development height of the water flowing fractured zone (WFFZ) in the overlying strata of the working face after mining under water and to ensure the safety and reliability of coal mining, the coal seam located under Weishanhu Lake in the Jisan coal mine was used as the experimental system. A similar laboratory simulation and water injection-based fracturing test system were used with the working face before and after mining activity to calculate, quantitatively detect, and qualitatively analyze the development height of the WFFZ in the overlying strata. Meanwhile, a flow-stress-damage model and its criterion of fracture expansion were established based on the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, and the FLAC 3D software was used to simulate the deformation and failure of the overlying strata and the evolution of WFFZ during the mining process. The results showed that the height ranges of the WFFZ beneath Weishanhu Lake of the Jisan coal mine as established by the above three methods are 30-45 m, 30-48 m, and 30-50 m. In the process of mining, the caving zone and fractured zone are, respectively, subjected to tensile failure and shear failure. The development height of the water flowing through the fractured zone in the overlying strata is basically consistent with the range of the “breaking arch.” The flow-stress-damage model and its criterion of fracture expansion can be applied to the fracture law of overlying strata under water under similar geological conditions.

In gob-side entry driving, the coal pillar width determines the stability of the surrounding rock and the pillar itself. Thus, to improve the stability of gas outburst coal seams, the reasonably narrow width of the coal pillars of the 40403 working face of the Shengyuan coal mine 4# was theoretically determined. Through two-dimensional simulations, the surrounding rock stability for a roadway with different coal pillar widths was evaluated. The mechanism of the surrounding rock displacement and stress distribution with the increase of the coal pillar width was also defined; for pillar widths of 2–4, 4–6, and 6–10 m, the vertical stress distribution was approximately triangular, trapezoidal, and parabolic, respectively. The coal pillar displacement was significantly greater on the goaf side than on to the roadway side. As the width of the coal pillar was incremented, its displacement on the goaf side increased, while that on the roadway side remained relatively small. The combination of the simulation results with on-site measurements finally revealed that 5 m is a reasonably narrow coal pillar width. Then, the findings were successfully applied to the 40403 working face of the Shengyuan coal mine 4#, achieving good outburst prevention and cost reduction.

The Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation is one of the most important shale reservoirs in the Northern Guizhou. To study the characteristics of pore structures and the relationships between shale's physical properties and pore structures in the complex tectonic area, from the perspective of hydrocarbon generation and evolution, the mineral composition, pore structure characteristics of shale samples in northern Guizhou were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopic composition analysis, focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), vitrinite reflectivity and nitrogen adsorption experiments. Results indicate that the pore structures can be categorized into conical, ink bottle, spherical, elliptical, beaded, irregular, and plate-like intersecting microfractures. Shale samples are organic-rich with an average total organic carbon content of 4.39%. Organic matter is consumed within the shale matrix during the hydrocarbon generation and evolution, which increases the organic pore size and the proportion of organic pores. The high TOC content is conducive to developing organic pores. In addition, the average content of brittle minerals is greater than 70%. High content of brittle minerals during diagenesis is conducive to developing the residual pores at the edges of mineral particles and dissolved pores within mineral particles. Thus, the high content of brittle minerals and TOC content is favorable for the development of meso-macropores. The content of clay minerals within the shale samples ranges from 6.3% to 42.2%, with an average of 20.02%. Micropores and mesopores mainly occur in the clay minerals. Pores in clay minerals are easily compacted under tectonic stress. Meanwhile, high thermal evolution degree and the vitrinite reflectance Ro greater than 3.5 is not conducive to developing pores. Hence, high TOC content, high brittle minerals content, and thermal evolution degree ranging from 0.6% to 3% make the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation shale reservoirs favorable for shale gas exploration.

Shale rock formations often contain calcite, which is a mineral that plays an important role in the failure of shale and in fracturing the reservoir volume. This study uses digital images to characterise the mesoscopic-scale non-uniformity of shale resulting from the shape, size and distribution of calcite in the shale. The geometry of the calcite is mapped to a finite element mesh based on the meso-scale structure of the rock. The numerical failure analysis model RFPA2D-DIP, which can accurately represent the meso-scale structure of shale, is used to simulate uniaxial compression. The influence of the meso-scale structure on the compressive strength and the failure process under various loading conditions are studied. The simulation results show that the meso-scale structure has an important influence on the compressive strength and the ultimate failure mode of samples loaded in various directions α . Furthermore, the results show that the compressive strength varies significantly with the direction of the load, indicating anisotropy. Depending on the direction, the failure mode can take the form of an inverted V ( α =0°, 30°, 45°), an inverted Z ( α =15°), a line ( α =75°), or a V ( α =60°, 90°). The spatial distribution of the acoustic emissions (AE) we observed is similar to those observed in macroscopic failure modes. The fractal dimension (D) of the shale fractures under various loading conditions is calculated using the box-counting method. The fractal dimension is an effective indicator of the failure mode. The value of D corresponding to the various failure modes is as follows: for the inverted Z the maximum value is 1.688016, for the line the minimum value is 1.481904, and for both the inverted V and the V, the value is between 1.688016 and 1.481904. Therefore, the failure mode is more complex for larger values of D.

The Cambrian Niutitang Formation shale reservoirs are widely distributed in the complex tectonic area in northern Guizhou. Fifteen organic-rich Niutitang Formation cores were selected from the tectonic deformation zones and tectonic stability zone in northern Guizhou, including the FC1 well related to fold, TM1 well related to faults, and TX1 well in the tectonic stability zone. Pore structures and reservoir physical properties of shale were tested via microphysical experiments and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (LTNA) test. Results indicate that the thermal evolution maturity of shale is in the over mature stage, with RO distributed between 2.30 and 3.74% and the total organic carbon content (TOC) between 3.8 and 7.5%. Shale cores in the tectonic stability zone have higher TOC content (6.25%) than that of shale (5.16%) in the tectonic deformation zones. Shale cores in the tectonic deformation zones have higher thermal evolution maturity Ro (2.98%) than that of shale (2.76%) in the tectonic stability zone. The pore size of shale cores ranges from 4.15 to 15.62 nm. The total pore volume of shale cores ranges from 9.71 to 33.20 cm3/kg, and the meso-macropore volume ranges from 7.4 to 28.21 cm3/kg. Shale cores in the tectonic deformation zones have higher average pore size, total pore volume, and meso-macropore volume percentage than that of shale cores in the tectonic stability zone. Meanwhile, the specific surface area of shale cores (SBET) ranges from 7.34 to 30.37 m2/g, and the micropore volume of shale cores ranges from 2.29 to 5.82 m3/kg. Shale cores in the tectonic stability zone have higher micropore volume, specific surface area, and percentage of micropore volume than that of shale cores in the tectonic deformation zones. Shale cores in the tectonic stability zone mainly develop micropores and mesopores. Mesopores and macropores are more susceptible to geological tectonism than micropores. The pore structures of shale in the tectonic stability zone have been effectively preserved during tectonic movements. The research results have certain guiding significance for the exploration of shale gas in the complex tectonic regions.

Uniaxial compression experiments and acoustic emission (AE) tests were conducted on weakly consolidated sandstone samples with bedding angle of 0°, 45°, and 90° collected from Xiaojihan coal mine in Shaanxi Province, China; the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of bedding sandstone were investigated, including the influencing mechanism of bedding angle on characteristics, spatial distribution, andbvalue changes of AE activity. According to the research, AE ringing counting rate and energy rate are the highest and energy release is intense during the loading process when the bedding angle is 0°, and these values decrease and the energy release is gentle with rising of the angle. Based on spatial distribution, the number of AE events was the largest and cluster phenomenon occurs between the bedding plane when the bedding inclination was 0°, which decreased and sprouted along the plane of bedding plane at 45° and which was smaller and evenly distributed in the space at 90°. With the increase of bedding angle, the proportion of large-scale microcracks decreases and the variation range of microcracks narrows down. Therefore, under the same uniaxial compression conditions, thebvalue increases by the increase of bedding angle. The research results offer reliable reference to carry out monitoring work on acoustic emission and microseism of mine with layer rock (rock mass).

In view of the phenomena of coal and gas outburst induced by fault activation under dynamic disturbance, a mechanical model of faults and surrounding rock mechanics was established based on the theory of fold catastrophe. Moreover, the dynamic disturbance factors were introduced and analyzed to analyze the influencing factors of outburst coal rock outburst. Through theoretical analysis, it shows that the thinner the fault medium is, the more energy the external input is required for system instability, and the external energy can reflect the stability of the system. When the width of fault media is fixed, the stronger the mining disturbance, the less energy the external input is required for system instability; on the contrary, the weaker the mining disturbance is, the more energy the external input is required for system instability. In addition, through the equation of conservation of kinetic energy, it can be seen that the stronger the mining disturbance, the greater the critical value of the surrounding rock thickness. The paper introduces the dynamic disturbance parameters through the catastrophe theory and analyzes the influence of the existence of faults on coal and gas outburst in detail, which provides a new theoretical basis for the prediction and prevention of coal and gas outburst disasters.

Crushing of high-sulfur coal was important for physical desulfurization, but there were little research on crushing mechanism. This paper combined digital image processing technology and rock failure process analysis system RFPA2D to simulate the failure process of high-sulfur coal in Pu'an of Guizhou under uniaxial compression, and discussed the influence of horizontal restraint, existence and different geometric distribution of pyrite particle on mechanical performance and failure process of high-sulfur coal. The numerical results indicated that without horizontal restraint the compressive strength of high-sulfur coal was lower and monomial dissociation of pyrite particle was more sufficient than that with horizontal restraint. The compressive strength of coal containing pyrite particle was larger than that of pure coal and there was stress concentration in upper and lower pyrite particle during failure process. When pyrite particle distributed in the middle position of a coal sample, the compressive strength was higher than that of the other three positions, but monomial dissociation of pyrite particle was more sufficient than that of the other three positions, and this was beneficial to the following desulfurization operation. The study had certain reference value for crushing mechanism, crushing process design, selection of breaking equipment and energy saving and consumption reduction. In order to investigate the influence of lateral constraint on the breakage behaviour of high-sulfur coal, this paper combines digital image processing technology and rock failure process analysis system RFPA2D to simulate the failure process of high-sulfur coal in Pu'an of Guizhou under uniaxial static load, and analyse the influences of lateral constraint on the crushing effect and energy consumption of high-sulfur coal. The numerical results indicate that better crushing effect and dissociation of pyrite can be acquired in the situation without lateral constraint than with lateral constraint, and consequently it can get good desulfurization effect.
