1. X-ray metal line emission from the hot circumgalactic medium: probing the effects of supermassive black hole feedback

Abstract

We derive predictions from state-of-the-art cosmological galaxy simulations for the spatial distribution of the hot circumgalactic medium (CGM, ${\rm [0.1-1]R_{200c}}$) through its emission lines in the X-ray soft band ($[0.3-1.3]$ keV). In particular, we compare IllustrisTNG, EAGLE, and SIMBA and focus on galaxies with stellar mass $10^{10-11.6}\, \MSUN$ at $z=0$. The three simulation models return significantly different surface brightness radial profiles of prominent emission lines from ionized metals such as OVII(f), OVIII, and FeXVII as a function of galaxy mass. Likewise, the three simulations predict varying azimuthal distributions of line emission with respect to the galactic stellar planes, with IllustrisTNG predicting the strongest angular modulation of CGM physical properties at radial range ${\gtrsim0.3-0.5\,R_{200c}}$. This anisotropic signal is more prominent for higher-energy lines, where it can manifest as X-ray eROSITA-like bubbles. Despite different models of stellar and supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback, the three simulations consistently predict a dichotomy between star-forming and quiescent galaxies at the Milky-Way and Andromeda mass range, where the former are X-ray brighter than the latter. This is a signature of SMBH-driven outflows, which are responsible for quenching star formation. Finally, we explore the prospect of testing these predictions with a microcalorimeter-based X-ray mission concept with a large field-of-view. Such a mission would probe the extended hot CGM via soft X-ray line emission, determine the physical properties of the CGM, including temperature, from the measurement of line ratios, and provide critical constraints on the efficiency and impact of SMBH feedback on the CGM., 21 pages, 15 figures. Abstract

The circumgalactic medium (CGM) plays a crucial role in galaxy evolution as it fuels star formation, retains metals ejected from the galaxies, and hosts gas flows in and out of galaxies. For Milky Way-type and more massive galaxies, the bulk of the CGM is in hot phases best accessible at X-ray wavelengths. However, our understanding of the CGM remains largely unconstrained due to its tenuous nature. A promising way to probe the CGM is via X-ray absorption studies. Traditional absorption studies utilize bright background quasars, but this method probes the CGM in a pencil beam, and, due to the rarity of bright quasars, the galaxy population available for study is limited. Large-area, high spectral resolution X-ray microcalorimeters offer a new approach to exploring the CGM in emission and absorption. Here, we demonstrate that the cumulative X-ray emission from cosmic X-ray background sources can probe the CGM in absorption. We construct column density maps of major X-ray ions from the Magneticum simulation and build realistic mock images of nine galaxies to explore the detectability of X-ray absorption lines arising from the large-scale CGM. We conclude that the OVII absorption line is detectable around individual massive galaxies at the $3\sigma-6\sigma$ confidence level. For Milky Way-type galaxies, the OVII and OVIII absorption lines are detectable at the $\sim\,6\sigma$ and $\sim\,3\sigma$ levels even beyond the virial radius when co-adding data from multiple galaxies. Abstract

Observations of high-redshift quasars reveal that many supermassive black holes (BHs) were in place less than 700 Million years after the Big Bang. However, the origin of the first BHs remains a mystery. Seeds of the first BHs are postulated to be either light (i.e., $10-100\ \rm{M_{\odot}})$, remnants of the first stars or heavy (i.e., $10^4-10^5\ \rm{M_{\odot}})$, originating from the direct collapse of gas clouds. Detection of growing BHs at very early times in the Universe (z>10) offers the cleanest method to probe seed origins. Harnessing recent data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, we report the detection of an X-ray-luminous massive BH in a gravitationally-lensed galaxy identified by JWST at $z\approx10.3$ behind the cluster lens Abell 2744. Combining Chandra and JWST observations, we can now witness the growth of the very first BHs and measure the properties of their host galaxies. This heavily-obscured quasar with a bolometric luminosity of $L_{\rm bol}\sim5\times10^{45}\ \rm{erg\ s^{-1}}$ harbors a $M_{\rm BH}\sim4\times10^7 \ \rm{M_{\odot}}$ BH assuming accretion at the Eddington limit. This mass is comparable to the inferred stellar mass of its host galaxy, in contrast to what is found in the local Universe wherein the BH mass is $\sim$0.1% of the host galaxy's stellar mass. The combination of such a high BH mass and large BH-to-galaxy stellar mass ratio just $\sim$500 Myrs after the Big Bang was theoretically predicted and is consistent with a picture wherein such BHs originated from heavy seeds., 28 pages, 6 figures, submitted, revised after the second round of referee reports

Abstract

The Line Emission Mapper (LEM) is an X-ray Probe for the 2030s that will answer the outstanding questions of the Universe's structure formation. It will also provide transformative new observing capabilities for every area of astrophysics, and to heliophysics and planetary physics as well. LEM's main goal is a comprehensive look at the physics of galaxy formation, including stellar and black-hole feedback and flows of baryonic matter into and out of galaxies. These processes are best studied in X-rays, and emission-line mapping is the pressing need in this area. LEM will use a large microcalorimeter array/IFU, covering a 30x30' field with 10" angular resolution, to map the soft X-ray line emission from objects that constitute galactic ecosystems. These include supernova remnants, star-forming regions, superbubbles, galactic outflows (such as the Fermi/eROSITA bubbles in the Milky Way and their analogs in other galaxies), the Circumgalactic Medium in the Milky Way and other galaxies, and the Intergalactic Medium at the outskirts and beyond the confines of galaxies and clusters. LEM's 1-2 eV spectral resolution in the 0.2-2 keV band will make it possible to disentangle the faintest emission lines in those objects from the bright Milky Way foreground, providing groundbreaking measurements of the physics of these plasmas, from temperatures, densities, chemical composition to gas dynamics. While LEM's main focus is on galaxy formation, it will provide transformative capability for all classes of astrophysical objects, from the Earth's magnetosphere, planets and comets to the interstellar medium and X-ray binaries in nearby galaxies, AGN, and cooling gas in galaxy clusters. In addition to pointed observations, LEM will perform a shallow all-sky survey that will dramatically expand the discovery space., 18 pages. Abstract

This Chapter provides a brief tutorial on some aspects of plasma physics that are fundamental to understanding the dynamics and energetics of the intracluster medium (ICM). The tutorial is split into two parts: one that focuses on the thermal plasma component -- its stability, viscosity, conductivity, and ability to amplify magnetic fields to dynamical strengths via turbulence and other plasma processes; and one that focuses on the non-thermal population of charged particles known as cosmic rays -- their acceleration, re-acceleration, and transport throughout the cluster volume. Observational context is woven throughout the narrative, from constraints on the strength and geometry of intracluster magnetic fields and the effective viscosity of the ICM, to examples of radio halos, radio relics, and cluster shocks that can test theories of particle acceleration. The promise of future X-ray missions to probe intracluster turbulence and discover the impact of small-scale plasma physics, coupled with sensitive, high-resolution radio observations of synchrotron-emitting plasma that reveal the properties of intracluster magnetic fields and particle-acceleration mechanisms, are likely to establish galaxy clusters as the premier cosmic laboratories for deciphering the fundamental physics of hot, dilute plasmas., This Chapter will appear in the Section "Galaxy Clusters" (Section Editors: E. Abstract

The hot gas in the intracluster medium (ICM) is perturbed by smooth mass accretion, mergers, feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN), motions of galaxies, and other processes. These processes could drive turbulence, which plays an important role in energy transfer, ICM heating, and star formation. Direct turbulence measurements through Doppler line broadening and resonant scattering of X-ray photons require high-resolution X-ray spectra. I will discuss what we have learned so far from the high-resolution XMM-Newton/RGS observations of compact cores of galaxies and groups and the near-future XRISM observatory, focusing on turbulence-related science planned for the Performance Verification phase.

Abstract

Clusters of galaxies, the largest collapsed structures in the Universe, are located at the intersection of extended filaments of baryons and dark matter. Cosmological accretion onto clusters through large scale filaments adds material at cluster outskirts. Kinetic energy in the form of bulk motions and turbulence due to this accretion provides a form of pressure support against gravity, supplemental to thermal pressure. Significant amount of non-thermal pressure support could bias cluster masses derived assuming hydrostatic equilibrium, the primary proxy for cluster cosmology studies. Sensitive measurements of Doppler broadening and shift of astrophysical lines, and the relative fluctuations in thermodynamical quantities (e.g., density, pressure, and entropy) are primary diagnostic tools. Abstract

Understanding the processes that drive galaxy formation and shape the observed properties of galaxies is one of the most interesting and challenging frontier problems of modern astrophysics. We now know that the evolution of galaxies is critically shaped by the energy injection from accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). However, it is unclear how exactly the physics of this feedback process affects galaxy formation and evolution. In particular, a major challenge is unraveling how the energy released near the SMBHs is distributed over nine orders of magnitude in distance throughout galaxies and their immediate environments. The best place to study the impact of SMBH feedback is in the hot atmospheres of massive galaxies, groups, and galaxy clusters, which host the most massive black holes in the Universe, and where we can directly image the impact of black holes on their surroundings. We identify critical questions and potential measurements that will likely transform our understanding of the physics of SMBH feedback and how it shapes galaxies, through detailed measurements of (i) the thermodynamic and velocity fluctuations in the intracluster medium (ICM) as well as (ii) the composition of the bubbles inflated by SMBHs in the centers of galaxy clusters, and their influence on the cluster gas and galaxy growth, using the next generation of high spectral and spatial resolution X-ray and microwave telescopes., Comment: 10 pages, submitted to the Astro2020 decadal

Abstract

Galaxy clusters are the largest and most massive bound objects resulting from cosmic hierarchical structure formation. Baryons account for somewhat more than 10% of that mass, with roughly 90% of the baryonic matter distributed throughout the clusters as hot ($T>1$ keV), high-$\beta$, very weakly collisional plasma; the so-called "intracluster medium" (ICM). Cluster mergers, close gravitational encounters and accretion, along with violent feedback from galaxies and relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei, drive winds, gravity waves, turbulence and shocks within the ICM. Those dynamics, in turn, generate cluster-scale magnetic fields and accelerate and mediate the transport of high-energy charged particles. Abstract

X-ray spectra of galaxy clusters are dominated by the thermal emission from the hot intracluster medium. In some cases, besides the thermal component, spectral models require additional components associated, e.g., with resonant scattering and charge exchange. The latter produces mostly underluminous fine spectral features. Detection of the extra components therefore requires high spectral resolution. The upcoming X-ray missions will provide such high resolution, and will allow spectroscopic diagnostics of clusters beyond the current simple thermal modeling. A representative science case is resonant scattering, which produces spectral distortions of the emission lines from the dominant thermal component. Accounting for the resonant scattering is essential for accurate abundance and gas motion measurements of the ICM. The high resolution spectroscopy might also reveal/corroborate a number of new spectral components, including the excitation by non-thermal electrons, the deviation from ionization equilibrium, and charge exchange from surface of cold gas clouds in clusters. Apart from detecting new features, future high resolution spectroscopy will also enable a much better measurement of the thermal component. Accurate atomic database and appropriate modeling of the thermal spectrum are therefore needed for interpreting the data., published in Space Science Reviews

Abstract

The ASTRO-H mission was designed and developed through an international collaboration of JAXA, NASA, ESA, and the CSA. It was successfully launched on February 17, 2016, and then named Hitomi. During the in-orbit verification phase, the on-board observational instruments functioned as expected. The intricate coolant and refrigeration systems for soft X-ray spectrometer (SXS, a quantum micro-calorimeter) and soft X-ray imager (SXI, an X-ray CCD) also functioned as expected. However, on March 26, 2016, operations were prematurely terminated by a series of abnormal events and mishaps triggered by the attitude control system. These errors led to a fatal event: the loss of the solar panels on the Hitomi mission. The X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission (or, XARM) is proposed to regain the key scientific advances anticipated by the international collaboration behind Hitomi. XARM will recover this science in the shortest time possible by focusing on one of the main science goals of Hitomi,“Resolving astrophysical problems by precise high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy”.1 This decision was reached after evaluating the performance of the instruments aboard Hitomi and the mission’s initial scientific results, and considering the landscape of planned international X-ray astrophysics missions in 2020’s and 2030’s. Hitomi opened the door to high-resolution spectroscopy in the X-ray universe. It revealed a number of discrepancies between new observational results and prior theoretical predictions. Yet, the resolution pioneered by Hitomi is also the key to answering these and other fundamental questions. The high spectral resolution realized by XARM will not offer mere refinements; rather, it will enable qualitative leaps in astrophysics and plasma physics. XARM has therefore been given a broad scientific charge: “Revealing material circulation and energy transfer in cosmic plasmas and elucidating evolution of cosmic structures and objects”. To fulfill this charge, four categories of science objectives that were defined for Hitomi will also be pursued by XARM; these include (1) Structure formation of the Universe and evolution of clusters of galaxies; (2) Circulation history of baryonic matters in the Universe; (3) Transport and circulation of energy in the Universe; (4) New science with unprecedented high resolution X-ray spectroscopy. In order to achieve these scientific objectives, XARM will carry a 6 × 6 pixelized X-ray micro-calorimeter on the focal plane of an X-ray mirror assembly, and an aligned X-ray CCD camera covering the same energy band and a wider field of view. This paper introduces the science objectives, mission concept, and observing plan of XARM.

Abstract

International audience; We report on a Hitomi observation of IGR J16318−4848, a high-mass X-ray binary system with an extremely strong absorption of N_H ∼ 10^24 cm^−2. Previous X-ray studies revealed that its spectrum is dominated by strong fluorescence lines of Fe as well as continuum emission lines. For physical and geometrical insight into the nature of the reprocessing material, we utilized the high spectroscopic resolving power of the X-ray microcalorimeter (the soft X-ray spectrometer: SXS) and the wide-band sensitivity by the soft and hard X-ray imagers (SXI and HXI) aboard Hitomi. Even though the photon counts are limited due to unintended off-axis pointing, the SXS spectrum resolves Fe Kα_1 and Kα_2 lines and puts strong constraints on the line centroid and line width. The line width corresponds to a velocity of 160$$^{+300}_{-70}$$ km s^−1. This represents the most accurate, and smallest, width measurement of this line made so far from the any X-ray binary, much less than the Doppler broadening and Doppler shift expected from speeds that are characteristic of similar systems. Combined with the K-shell edge energy measured by the SXI and HXI spectra, the ionization state of Fe is estimated to be in the range of Fe i–iv. Considering the estimated ionization parameter and the distance between the X-ray source and the absorber, the density and thickness of the materials are estimated. The extraordinarily strong absorption and the absence of a Compton shoulder component have been confirmed. These characteristics suggest reprocessing materials that are distributed in a narrow solid angle or scattering, primarily by warm free electrons or neutral hydrogen. This measurement was achieved using the SXS detection of 19 photons. It provides strong motivation for follow-up observations of this and other X-ray binaries using the X-ray Astrophysics Recovery Mission and other comparable future instruments.

Abstract

The Crab nebula originated from a core-collapse supernova (SN) explosion observed in 1054 A.D. When viewed as a supernova remnant (SNR), it has an anomalously low observed ejecta mass and kinetic energy for an Fe-core collapse SN. Intensive searches were made for a massive shell that solves this discrepancy, but none has been detected. An alternative idea is that the SN1054 is an electron-capture (EC) explosion with a lower explosion energy by an order of magnitude than Fe-core collapse SNe. In the X-rays, imaging searches were performed for the plasma emission from the shell in the Crab outskirts to set a stringent upper limit to the X-ray emitting mass. However, the extreme brightness of the source hampers access to its vicinity. We thus employed spectroscopic technique using the X-ray micro-calorimeter onboard the Hitomi satellite. By exploiting its superb energy resolution, we set an upper limit for emission or absorption features from yet undetected thermal plasma in the 2-12 keV range. Abstract

The origin of the narrow Fe-K�� fluorescence line at 6.4 keV from active galactic nuclei has long been under debate; some of the possible sites are the outer accretion disk, the broad line region, a molecular torus, or interstellar/intracluster media. In February-March 2016, we performed the first X-ray microcalorimeter spectroscopy with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi satellite of the Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxy NGC 1275 at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. With the high energy resolution of ~5 eV at 6 keV achieved by Hitomi/SXS, we detected the Fe-K�� line with ~5.4 �� significance. The velocity width is constrained to be 500-1600 km s$^{-1}$ (FWHM for Gaussian models) at 90% confidence. The SXS also constrains the continuum level from the NGC 1275 nucleus up to ~20 keV, giving an equivalent width ~20 eV of the 6.4 keV line. Because the velocity width is narrower than that of broad H�� line of ~2750 km s$^{-1}$, we can exclude a large contribution to the line flux from the accretion disk and the broad line region. Furthermore, we performed pixel map analyses on the Hitomi/SXS data and image analyses on the Chandra archival data, and revealed that the Fe-K�� line comes from a region within ~1.6 kpc from the NGC 1275 core, where an active galactic nucleus emission dominates, rather than that from intracluster media. Therefore, we suggest that the source of the Fe-K�� line from NGC 1275 is likely a low-covering fraction molecular torus or a rotating molecular disk which probably extends from a pc to hundreds pc scale in the active galactic nucleus system., 20 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

Abstract

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. The current state of the financial security of Ukraine\'s regions based on the taxonomic index is defined. Neural networks of financial security of Ukraine\'s regions with the help of Statistica Neural Networks are built. Potential threats to the financial security of Ukraine\'s regions based on sensitivity analysis are identified.

23. Measuring Effective Equation of State of Diffuse Gas in Galaxy Clusters: From Chandra to X-ray Surveyor

Abstract

Density perturbations in the hot gas in galaxy clusters can be caused by a variety of processes, e.g. shocks and sound waves, slow gas displacements in pressure equilibrium with the ambient gas, bubbles of relativistic plasma, etc. Each type of perturbations will appear different in soft- and hard-band X-ray images, since the former is only density-dependent, while the latter is also temperature-dependent. High spatial resolution of Chandra allows us to probe statistics of density perturbations on a broad range of spatial scales, down to microphysical scales. I will show the results of auto- and cross-spectra analysis of fluctuations in soft and hard bands in the core of the Perseus cluster which reveal the primary energy-transporting mechanism in the radio-mode feedback. The analysis shows big potential, although low photon statistics and lack of high-spectral-resolution data significantly limit the analysis. Future X-ray missions with large effective area, similar to Chandra spatial resolution and few eV spectral resolution, like X-ray Surveyor, will allow us to use the whole power of such statistical methods. At the end of my talk I will briefly discuss future perspectives with X-ray Surveyor.

Abstract

This paper summarizes the results of a brainstorming session held during the X-ray Vision Workshop (Oct 6-8, 2015, Washington DC). The workshop was convened to discuss the scientific potential of the X-ray Surveyor mission. The X-ray Surveyor concept, which was defined by the Astrophysics Roadmap, is to effect a 100-fold gain in survey and spectroscopic capability over the Chandra X-ray Observatory, while at least matching Chandra’s sub-arcsecond imaging capability. This paper is intended to inform interested scientists of the growing discussion in our community and to solicit their input in the area of new science that a next generation high-resolution X-ray Observatory may provide for astrophysics. This paper is not an official document and is certainly not the definitive science case for an X-ray Surveyor mission. It is, instead, an early input to this discussion, which we hope will lead to a full reference white paper on the X-Ray Surveyor concept.

Abstract

This White Paper, submitted to the recent ESA call for science themes to define its future large missions, advocates the need for a transformational leap in our understanding of two key questions in astrophysics: 1) How does ordinary matter assemble into the large scale structures that we see today? 2) How do black holes grow and shape the Universe? Hot gas in clusters, groups and the intergalactic medium dominates the baryonic content of the local Universe. To understand the astrophysical processes responsible for the formation and assembly of these large structures, it is necessary to measure their physical properties and evolution. This requires spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy with a factor 10 increase in both telescope throughput and spatial resolving power compared to currently planned facilities. Feedback from supermassive black holes is an essential ingredient in this process and in most galaxy evolution models, but it is not well understood. X-ray observations can uniquely reveal the mechanisms launching winds close to black holes and determine the coupling of the energy and matter flows on larger scales. Due to the effects of feedback, a complete understanding of galaxy evolution requires knowledge of the obscured growth of supermassive black holes through cosmic time, out to the redshifts where the first galaxies form. X-ray emission is the most reliable way to reveal accreting black holes, but deep survey speed must improve by a factor ~100 over current facilities to perform a full census into the early Universe. The Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (Athena+) mission provides the necessary performance (e.g. angular resolution, spectral resolution, survey grasp) to address these questions and revolutionize our understanding of the Hot and Energetic Universe. Abstract

Цель исследования - оценить результаты обучающей программы для пациентов с протезированными клапанами сердца. Обследованы 38 больных (15 женщин и 23 мужчины) в возрасте 55,3 ± 8,5 лет, прошедших полный курс обучения в школе больных с протезированными клапанами сердца. Программа обучения состояла из цикла структурированных занятий продолжительностью по 45 минут каждое. В цикл обучения входили пять занятий. Группы пациентов формировались по 5-10 человек. Разработанная обучающая программа построена на принципе преемственности стационарного и амбулаторного этапов ведения больных. По завершении обучения пациентам вручался диплом об окончании школы больных с протезированными клапанами сердца. Всем пациентам до проведения обучающей программы и после оценивали приверженность к лечению, уровень реактивной и личностной тревожности, качество жизни, определяли уровень знаний пациентов по разработанной нами анкете. Разработанная обучающая программа для пациентов с протезированными клапанами сердца является эффективным методом проведения реабилитационных мероприятий после кардиохирургических вмешательств. Применение обучающей программы у данной категории больных способствует повышению информированности пациентов в вопросах профилактики осложнений антикоагулянтной терапии, возникновения протезного инфекционного эндокардита, оптимизации физической и психологической реабилитации, а также повышению приверженности к лечению и улучшению качества жизни пациентов с протезированными клапанами сердца., Purpose evaluate the results of the educational program implementation for patients with heart valve grafts. 38 patients (15 females and 23 males) with heart valve grafts, aged 55,3 ± 8,5 years, who completed a full training course, were examined. The program consists of 5 structured classes 45 minutes each. The groups included 5-10 patients. The designed educational program is based on the principle of continuity of inhospital and outhospital treatment stages. All the patients were awarded a diploma upon the course completion. Before and after the course completion all the patients were evaluated for the treatment compliance, reactive and personal anxiety levels, life quality and the level of specific heart valve knowledge by means of the designed questionnaire. The designed educational program for patients with heart valve grafts represents an effective way of rehabilitation after cardiac surgery. Completing this training course provides the increase in patients' awareness on the prevention of anticoagulant therapy complications, infectious graft endocarditis development, lets optimize physical and pshychological rehabilitation and allows better compliance and life quality.

Abstract

We use a new non-parametric Bayesian approach to obtain the most probable mass distributions and circular velocity curves along with their confidence ranges, given deprojected density and temperature profiles of the hot gas surrounding X-ray bright elliptical galaxies. For a sample of six X-ray bright ellipticals, we find that all circular velocity curves are rising in the outer parts due to a combination of a rising temperature profile and a logarithmic pressure gradient that increases in magnitude. Comparing the circular velocity curves we obtain from X-rays to those obtained from dynamical models, we find that the former are often lower in the central ~10 kpc. This is probably due to a combination of: i) Non-thermal contributions of up to ~35% in the pressure (with stronger effects in NGC 4486), ii) multiple-temperature components in the hot gas, iii) incomplete kinematic spatial coverage in the dynamical models, and iv) mass profiles that are insufficiently general in the dynamical modelling. Complementing the total mass information from the X-rays with photometry and stellar population models to infer the dark matter content, we find evidence for massive dark matter haloes with dark matter mass fractions of ~35-80% at 2Re, rising to a maximum of 80-90% at the outermost radii. We also find that the six galaxies follow a Tully-Fisher relation with slope ~4 and that their circular velocities at 1Re correlate strongly with the velocity dispersion of the local environment. As a result, the galaxy luminosity at 1Re also correlates with the velocity dispersion of the environment. These relations suggest a close link between the properties of central X-ray bright elliptical galaxies and their environments (abridged)., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Power spectra of density fluctua4ons can be measured down to few ”. Velocity spectrum can be measured down to scales ~3 4mes larger Marginally resolved mean free path (in veloci4es). Signs of the spectrum steepening should be present at scales larger than m.f.p. Depends on the calibration of gain (of pixels) and uniformity of QE. The mass of the cold gas (at any T, even if it not visible) can be measured via fluorescent iron line at 6.4 keV.
