The concept of utilizing a molecule bridged between two electrodes as a stable rectifying device with the possibility of commercialization is a "holy grail" of molecular electronics. Molecular rectifiers do not only exploit the electronic function of the molecules but also offer the possibility of their direct integration into specific nano-electronic circuits. However, even after nearly three decades of extensive experimental and theoretical work, the concept of molecular rectifiers still has many unresolved aspects concerning both the fundamental understanding of the underlying phenomena and the practical realization. At the same time, recent advancements in molecular systems with rectification ratios exceeding 105 are highly promising and competitive to the existing silicon-based devices. Here, we provide an overview and critical analysis of the current state and recent progress in molecular rectification relying on the different design concepts and material platforms such as single molecules, self-assembled monolayers, molecular multilayers, heterostructures, and metal-organic frameworks and coordination polymers. The involvement of crucial parameters such as the energy of molecular orbitals, electrode-molecule coupling, and asymmetric shifting of the energy levels will be discussed. Finally, we conclude by critically addressing the challenges and prospects for progress in the field and perspectives for the commercialization of molecular rectifiers., 32 pages, 7 figures

[Image: see text] When employing self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for tuning surface and interface properties, organic molecules that enable strong binding to the substrate, large-area structural uniformity, precise alignment of functional groups, and control of their density are highly desirable. To achieve these goals, tripod systems bearing multiple bonding sites have been developed as an alternative to conventional monodentate systems. Bonding of all three sites has, however, hardly been achieved, with the consequence that structural uniformity and orientational order in tripodal SAMs are usually quite poor. To overcome that problem, we designed 1,8,13-trimercaptomethyltriptycene (T1) and 1,8,13-trimercaptotriptycene (T2) as potential tripodal SAM precursors and investigated their adsorption behavior on Au(111) combining several advanced experimental techniques and state-of-the-art theoretical simulations. Both SAMs adopt dense, nested hexagonal structures but differ in their adsorption configurations and structural uniformity. While the T2-based SAM exhibits a low degree of order and noticeable deviation from the desired tripodal anchoring, all three anchoring groups of T1 are equally bonded to the surface as thiolates, resulting in an almost upright orientation of the benzene rings and large-area structural uniformity. These superior properties are attributed to the effect of conformationally flexible methylene linkers at the anchoring groups, absent in the case of T2. Both SAMs display interesting electronic properties, and, bearing in mind that the triptycene framework can be functionalized by tail groups in various positions and with high degree of alignment, especially T1 appears as an ideal docking platform for complex and highly functional molecular films.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing embedded dipolar groups offer the particular advantage of changing the electronic properties of a surface without affecting the SAM-ambient interface. Here we show that such systems can also be used for continuously tuning metal work functions by growing mixed monolayers consisting of molecules with different orientations of the embedded dipolar groups. To avoid injection hot-spots when using the SAM-modified electrodes in devices, a homogeneous mixing of the two components is crucial. We show that a combination of high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with state-of-the-art simulations is an ideal tool for probing the electrostatic homogeneity of the layers and thus for determining phase separation processes in polar adsorbate assemblies down to inhomogeneities at the molecular level.

The focus of the present article is on understanding the insight that X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements can provide when studying self-assembled monolayers. Comparing density functional theory calculations to experimental data on deliberately chosen model systems, we show that both the chemical environment and electrostatic effects arising from a superposition of molecular dipoles influence the measured core-level binding energies to a significant degree. The crucial role of the often overlooked electrostatic effects in polar self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is unambiguously demonstrated by changing the dipole density through varying the SAM coverage. As a consequence of this effect, care has to be taken when extracting chemical information from the XP spectra of ordered organic adsorbate layers. Our results, furthermore, imply that XPS is a powerful tool for probing local variations in the electrostatic energy in nanoscopic systems, especially in SAMs.

Transition voltages respond to the collective action of dipole moments embedded in self-assembled monolayers., We studied the influence of embedded dipole moments in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed on template stripped Au surfaces with liquid eutectic Ga–In alloy as a top electrode. We designed three molecules based on a p-terphenyl structure in which the central aromatic ring is either phenyl or a dipole-inducing pyrimidyl in one of two different orientations. All three form well defined SAMs with similar thickness, packing density and tilt angle, with dipole moments embedded in the SAM, isolated from either interface. The magnitude of the current density is dominated by the tunneling distance and is not affected by the presence of dipole moments; however, transition voltages (VT) show a clear linear correlation with the shift in the work function of Au induced by the collective action of the embedded dipoles. This observation demonstrates that VT can be manipulated synthetically, without altering either the interfaces or electrodes and that trends in VT can be related to experimental observables on the SAMs before installing the top contact. Calculated projected density of states of the SAMs on Au surfaces that relate HOMO-derived states to VT further show that energy level alignment within an assembled junction can be predicted and adjusted by embedding dipoles in a SAM without altering any other properties of the junction. We therefore suggest that trends in VT can be used analogously to β in systems for which length-dependence is physically or experimentally inaccessible.

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has become increasingly popular in the scientific and industrial communities because of its analytical capabilities and potential to study fundamentals in plasmonics. Although under certain conditions extremely high sensitivity is possible the practical use of SERS is frequently limited by instability and poor reproducibility of the enhancement factor. For analytical applications or for comparative measurements to enable the distinction between electromagnetic and chemical enhancement the development of standardized and recyclable SERS substrates having uniform and persistent performance is proposed. To this end we have fabricated periodic nanoslit arrays using extreme ultraviolet lithography that provide average large (2106) and homogeneous SERS enhancement factors with a spot to spot variability of less than 3. In addition they are reusable without any degradation or loss of enhancement. The fabrication of such arrays consists of two steps only lithographic patterning followed by metal evaporation. Both processes may be performed over areas of several square mm on any planar substrate. The sensor capabilities were demonstrated by substrates with monomolecular films of several different thiols. The concept of reusable SERS substrates may open a powerful platform within an analytical tool and in particular for systematic SERS studies for the investigation of fundamental parameters such as chemical enhancement surface selection rules and molecular alignment.
