We present experimental results, which show a laser polarization dependent contribution to electron beam pointing jitter in laser wakefield accelerators (LWFA). We develop a theoretical model for the polarization dependence in terms of the transverse dynamics of trapped electrons, resonantly driven by bubble centroid oscillations. The latter are generated by the carrier wave phase evolution at the self-steepened laser pulse front. In the model, the polarization dependent jitter originates from shot-to-shot fluctuations of the laser carrier envelope phase. The model is verified by particle in cell simulations and suggests that for non-CEP stabilized systems the polarization dependent jitter may form an ultimate limit to beam pointing stability in LWFAs.

We describe a laser-plasma platform for photon-photon collision experiments to measure fundamental quantum electrodynamic processes such as the linear Breit-Wheeler process with real photons. The platform has been developed using the Gemini laser facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. A laser wakefield accelerator and a bremsstrahlung convertor are used to generate a collimated beam of photons with energies of hundreds of MeV, that collide with keV x-ray photons generated by a laser heated plasma target. To detect the pairs generated by the photon-photon collisions, a magnetic transport system has been developed which directs the pairs onto scintillation-based and hybrid silicon pixel single particle detectors. We present commissioning results from an experimental campaign using this laser-plasma platform for photon-photon physics, demonstrating successful generation of both photon sources, characterisation of the magnetic transport system and calibration of the single particle detectors, and discuss the feasibility of this platform for the observation of the Breit-Wheeler process. The design of the platform will also serve as the basis for the investigation of strong-field quantum electrodynamic processes such as the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler and the Trident process, or eventually, photon-photon scattering., 28 pages, 14 figures

The extreme intensities obtainable with lasers such as Gemini allow non-linear QED phenomena to be investigated according to our calculations. Electron-positron pair production from a pure vacuum target, which has yet to be observed experimentally, is possibly the most iconic process. Beyond pair-production our campaign will allow the experimental investigation of currently unexplored extreme radiation regimes, like the quantum radiation dominated regime (where quantum and self-field effects become important) and non-linear Compton scattering. This is the first experiment in a multi-part campaign proposed by a major international collaboration to investigate non-linear QED. This proposal is for the first experiment in a series of 3 to achieve our most high-profile experimental goal of pair production in vacuum, but each experiment is designed to have its own tangible high-profile outcome.

This Letter of Intent describes LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experiment that aims to use the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL and a powerful laser. The scientific objective of the experiment is to study quantum electrodynamics processes in the regime of strong fields. High-energy electrons, accelerated by the European XFEL linear accelerator, and high-energy photons, produced via Bremsstrahlung of those beam electrons, colliding with a laser beam shall experience an electric field up to three times larger than the Schwinger critical field (the field at which the vacuum itself is expected to become unstable and spark with spontaneous creation of electron-positron pairs) and access a new regime of quantum physics. The processes to be investigated, which include nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production, are relevant to a variety of phenomena in Nature, e.g. in the areas of astrophysics and collider physics and complement recent results in atomic physics. The setup requires in particular the extraction of a minute fraction of the electron bunches from the European XFEL accelerator, the installation of a powerful laser with sophisticated diagnostics, and an array of precision detectors optimised to measure electrons, positrons and photons. Physics sensitivity projections based on simulations are also provided.

Experiments investigating ion acceleration from laser-irradiated ultra-thin foils on the GEMINI laser facility at the Rutherford appleton laboratory indicate a transition to ‘light sail’ radiation pressure acceleration when using circularly polarised, high contrast laser pulses. This paper complements previously published results with additional data and modelling which provide information on the multispecies dynamics taking place during the acceleration, and provides an indication on expected scaling of these processes at higher laser intensities.

The description of the dynamics of an electron in an external electromagnetic field of arbitrary intensity is one of the most fundamental outstanding problems in electrodynamics. Remarkably, to date there is no unanimously accepted theoretical solution for ultra-high intensities and little or no experimental data. The basic challenge is the inclusion of the self-interaction of the electron with the field emitted by the electron itself - the so-called radiation reaction force. We report here on the experimental evidence of strong radiation reaction, in an all-optical experiment, during the propagation of highly relativistic electrons (maximum energy exceeding 2 GeV) through the field of an ultra-intense laser (peak intensity of $4\times10^{20}$ W/cm$^2$). In their own rest frame, the highest energy electrons experience an electric field as high as one quarter of the critical field of quantum electrodynamics and are seen to lose up to 30% of their kinetic energy during the propagation through the laser field. The experimental data show signatures of quantum effects in the electron dynamics in the external laser field, potentially showing departures from the constant cross field approximation.

A scheme has been developed permitting the spatial and temporal characterisation of ultrafast dynamics induced by laser driven proton bursts in transparent dielectrics. Advantage is taken of the high degree of synchronicity between the proton bursts generated during laser-foil target interactions and the probing laser to provide the basis for streaking of the dynamics. The dispersive behavior of materials with atomic charge numbers varing from $Z = 4$ (beryllium, Be) to $Z = 82$ (lead, Pb) was investigated experimentally and theoretically at $��$-ray energies up to 2 MeV. The experiment was performed at the double-crystal gamma spectrometer GAMS6 of the ILL in Grenoble. The experimental results were compared with theoretical calculations which account for all major elastic processes involved. Overall, we found a good agreement between theory and experiment. We find that for the development of refractive optics at $��$-ray energies beyond those currently in use high-Z materials become increasingly attractive compared to the beryllium lens-stacks used at X-ray energies., submitted to Phys. The spatial distribution of protons accelerated from submicron-thick plastic foil targets using multi-terawatt, frequency-doubled laser pulses with ultra-high temporal contrast has been investigated experimentally. A very stable, ring-like beam profile of the accelerated protons, oriented around the target's normal direction has been observed. The ring's opening angle has been found to decrease with increasing foil thicknesses. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations reproduce our results indicating that the ring is formed during the expansion of the proton density distribution into the vacuum as described by the mechanism of target-normal sheath acceleration. Here - in addition to the longitudinal electric fields responsible for the forward acceleration of the protons - a lateral charge separation leads to transverse field components accelerating the protons in the lateral direction.

High-order harmonic generation (HHG) through nonlinear interaction of intense laser beams with different systems is a promising source of bright, ultra-short bursts of extreme-ultraviolet radiation. High harmonics arise since the radiation is emitted as a train of attosecond pulses. A key objective is to achieve a single isolated pulse to allow time resolved measurements characterized by these pulses on an attosecond scale. We carried out experiments into JETI200 facility in Jena, Germany in order to characterize the properties of the harmonic radiation generated from a solid surface interaction, with the ultimate goal of employing temporal gating schemes to reduce the attosecond pulse train to a single pulse. The reason this laser is well suited for such experiment is a combination of its high power and the fact it is “quasi”-few-cycle (6.39 cycles) ideal for trying out gating scheme.

Scintillation screens are generally used as the electron beam diagnostics in Laser Wakefield Accelerators. We present an absolute charge calibration of the electron detector i.e. a scintillating screen with a layer of powdered rare earth phosphor (Gd2O2S:Tb). The calibration was designed to investigate the absolute light/charge–ratio and saturation effects of various screens used in current laser–electron accelerators. The scintillation screens show a linear photon response to the applied charge up to an upper boundary caused by saturation effects. We also report about degeneration studies of some of these screens which were excited with a similar condition compared to Wakefield experiments.

The birth of attosecond light sources is expected to inspire a breakthrough in ultrafast optics, which may extend human real-time measurement and control techniques into atomic-scale electronic dynamics. For applications, it is essential to obtain a single attosecond pulse of high intensity, large photon energy and short duration. Here we show that single 100-terawatt attosecond X-ray light pulse with intensity ${1\times10^{21}}\textrm{W}/\textrm{cm}^{{ 2}}$ and duration ${7.9} \textrm{as}$ can be produced by intense laser irradiation on a capacitor-nanofoil target composed of two separate nanofoils. In the interaction, a strong electrostatic potential develops between two nanofoils, which drags electrons out of the second foil and piles them up in vacuum, forming an ultradense relativistic electron nanobunch. This nanobunch exists in only half a laser cycle and smears out in others, resulting in coherent synchrotron emission of a single pulse. Such an unprecedentedly giant attosecond X-ray pulse may bring us to view a real attoworld., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

We present measurements of the spatial and temporal coherence lengths of the 4th harmonic of a 1053 nm, 2.5 ps laser generated during high intensity (up to 10(19) wcm(-2)) interactions with a solid target. Coherence lengths were measured by use of a Young's double slit interferometer. The effective source size, as defined by the Van Cittert-Zernicke theorem, was found to be 10 similar to 12 mu m, and the coherence time was observed to be in the range 0.02 similar to 0.4 ps.

Measurements of ultrahigh magnetic fields produced during intense laser interaction with solids were presented. Polarization measurements of high-order laser harmonics suggest the existence of magnetic field strengths of 0.7±0.1 GG. It was found that denser regions of the plasma can be probed using higher order harmonics. The technique was found to be useful for the measurements of multi-GG level magnetic fields.

The transport of relativistic electrons generated in the interaction of petawatt class lasers with solid targets has been studied through measurements of the second harmonic optical emission from their rear surface. The high degree of polarization of the emission indicates that it is predominantly optical transition radiation (TR). A halo that surrounds the main region of emission is also polarized and is attributed to the effect of electron recirculation. The variation of the polarization state and intensity of radiation with the angle of observation indicates that the emission of TR is highly directional and provides evidence for the presence of μm-size filaments. A brief discussion on the possible causes of such a fine electron beam structure is given. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

We present a comprehensive model for predicting the full performance of a second harmonic generation-optical parametric amplification system that aims at enhancing the temporal contrast of laser pulses. The model simultaneously takes into account all the main parameters at play in the system such as the group velocity mismatch, the beam divergence, the spectral content, the pump depletion, and the length of the nonlinear crystals. We monitor the influence of the initial parameters of the input pulse and the interdependence of the two related non-linear processes on the performance of the system and show its optimum configuration. The influence of the initial beam divergence on the spectral and the temporal characteristics of the generated pulse is discussed. In addition, we show that using a crystal slightly longer than the optimum length and introducing small delay between the seed and the pump ensures maximum efficiency and compensates for the spectral shift in the optical parametric amplification stage in case of chirped input pulse. As an example, calculations for bandwidth transform limited and chirped pulses of sub-picosecond duration in beta barium borate crystal are presented.

Tracking primary radiation-induced processes in matter requires ultrafast sources and high precision timing. While compact laser-driven ion accelerators are seeding the development of novel high instantaneous flux applications, combining the ultrashort ion and laser pulse durations with their inherent synchronicity to trace the real-time evolution of initial damage events has yet to be realized. Here we report on the absolute measurement of proton bursts as short as 3.5±0.7 ps from laser solid target interactions for this purpose. Our results verify that laser-driven ion acceleration can deliver interaction times over a factor of hundred shorter than those of state-of-the-art accelerators optimized for high instantaneous flux. Furthermore, these observations draw ion interaction physics into the field of ultrafast science, opening the opportunity for quantitative comparison with both numerical modelling and the adjacent fields of ultrafast electron and photon interactions in matter.

Spectrally-peaked proton beams of high charge (Ep ≈ 8 MeV, ΔE ≈ 4 MeV, N ≈ 50 nC ) have been observed from the interaction of an intense laser (>1019Wcm-2) with ultrathinCHfoils, as measured by spectrally-resolved full beam profiles. These beams are reproducibly generated for foil thicknesses 5-100 nm, and exhibit narrowing divergence with decreasing target thickness down to ≈8° for 5 nm. Simulations demonstrate that the narrow energy spread feature is a result of buffered acceleration of protons. The radiation pressure at the front of the target results in asymmetric sheath fields which permeate throughout the target, causing preferential forward acceleration. Due to their higher chargeto-mass ratio, the protons outrun a carbon plasma driven in the relativistic transparency regime.

The jets of compact accreting objects are composed of electrons and a mixture of positrons and ions. These outflows impinge on the interstellar or intergalactic medium and both plasmas interact via collisionless processes. Filamentation (beam-Weibel) instabilities give rise to the growth of strong electromagnetic fields. These fields thermalize the interpenetrating plasmas. Hitherto, the effects imposed by a spatial non-uniformity on filamentation instabilities have remained unexplored. We examine the interaction between spatially uniform background electrons and a minuscule cloud of electrons and positrons. A square micro-cloud of equally dense electrons and positrons impinges in our particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation on a spatially uniform plasma at rest. The mean speed of the micro-cloud corresponds to a relativistic factor of 15, which is relevant for laboratory experiments and for relativistic astrophysical outflows. The spatial distributions of the leptons and of the electromagnetic fields are examined at several times. A filamentation instability develops between the magnetic field carried by the micro-cloud and the background electrons. The electromagnetic fields, which grow from noise levels, redistribute the electrons and positrons within the cloud, which boosts the peak magnetic field amplitude. The current density and the moduli of the electromagnetic fields grow aperiodically in time and steadily along the direction that is anti-parallel to the cloud's velocity vector. The micro-cloud remains conjoined during the simulation. The instability induces an electrostatic wakefield in the background plasma., 10 pages, 13 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics (in press)

Direct investigation of ion-induced dynamics in matter on picosecond (ps, 10-12 s) timescales has been precluded to date by the relatively long nanosecond (ns, 10-9 s) scale ion pulses typically provided by radiofrequency accelerators1. By contrast, laser-driven ion accelerators provide bursts of ps duration2, but have yet to be applied to the study of ultrafast ion-induced transients in matter. We report on the evolution of an electron-hole plasma excited in borosilicate glass by such bursts. This is observed as an onset of opacity to synchronised optical probe radiation and is characterised by the 3.0 +/- 0.8 ps ion pump rise-time . The observed decay-time of 35 +/- 3 ps i.e. is in excellent agreement with modelling and reveals the rapidly evolving electron temperature (>10 3 K) and carrier number density (>10 17cm-3). This result demonstrates that ps laser accelerated ion bursts are directly applicable to investigating the ultrafast response of matter to ion interactions and, in particular, to ultrafast pulsed ion radiolysis of water3-5, the radiolytic decompositions of which underpin biological cell damage and hadrontherapy for cancer treatment6., 11 pages

Recent experiments using Terawatt lasers to accelerate protons deposited on thin wire targets are modeled with a new type of gridless plasma simulation code. In contrast to conventional mesh-based methods, this technique offers a unique capability in emulating the complex geometry and open-ended boundary conditions characteristic of contemporary experimental conditions. Comparisons of ion acceleration are made between the tree code and standard particle-in-cell simulations for a typical collisionless "hole boring" scenario in slab geometry. The utility of the gridless approach is emphasized by a series of simulations in "wire" geometry, in which electrons are permitted to circulate around the target at arbitrary distances from the focal region. The simulations reveal a number of features in common with recent experimental observations, including a disclike emission pattern of the MeV protons accelerated away from the wire. We report on the generation of a narrow divergence ($\theta\approx 2.5$ mrad), multi-MeV ($E_\text{MAX} = 18$ MeV) and ultra-high brilliance ($\approx 2\times10^{19}$ photons s$^{-1}$ mm$^{-2}$ mrad $^{-2}$ 0.1\% BW) $\gamma$-ray beam from the scattering of an ultra-relativistic laser-wakefield accelerated electron beam in the field of a relativistically intense laser (dimensionless amplitude $a_0\approx2$). The spectrum of the generated $\gamma$-ray beam is measured, with MeV resolution, seamlessly from 6 MeV to 18 MeV, giving clear evidence of the onset of non-linear Thomson scattering. The photon source has the highest brilliance in the multi-MeV regime ever reported in the literature.

Laser-wakefield acceleration is a promising technique for the next generation of ultra-compact, high-energy particle accelerators. However, for a meaningful use of laser-driven particle beams it is necessary that they present a high degree of pointing stability in order to be injected into transport lines and further acceleration stages. Here we show a comprehensive experimental study of the main factors limiting the pointing stability of laser-wakefield accelerated electron beams. It is shown that gas-cells provide a much more stable electron generation axis, if compared to gas-jet targets, virtually regardless of the gas density used. A sub-mrad shot-to-shot fluctuation in pointing is measured and a consistent non-zero offset of the electron axis in respect to the laser propagation axis is found to be solely related to a residual angular dispersion introduced by the laser compression system and can be used as a precise diagnostic tool for compression oprtimisation in chirped pulse amplified lasers.

Spectrally-peaked proton beams ($E_{p}\approx 8$ MeV, $\Delta E\approx 4$ MeV) have been observed from the interaction of an intense laser ($> 10^{19 }$ Wcm$^{-2}$) with ultrathin CH foils, as measured by spectrally-resolved full beam profiles. These beams are reproducibly generated for foil thicknesses (5-100 nm), and exhibit narrowing divergence with decreasing target thickness down to $\approx 8^\circ$ for 5 nm. Simulations demonstrate that the narrow energy spread feature is a result of buffered acceleration of protons. Due to their higher charge-to-mass ratio, the protons outrun a carbon plasma driven in the relativistic transparency regime.

The nonlinear optical properties of a plasma due to the relativistic electron motion in an intense laser field are of fundamental importance for current research and the generation of brilliant laser-driven sources of particles and photons1-15. Yet, one of the most interesting regimes, where the frequency of the laser becomes resonant with the plasma, has remained experimentally hard to access. We overcome this limitation by utilizing ultrathin carbon nanotube foam16 (CNF) targets allowing the strong relativistic nonlinearities at near- critical density (NCD) to be exploited for the first time. We report on the experimental realization of relativistic plasma optics to spatio-temporally compress the laser pulse within a few micrometers of propagation, while maintaining about half its energy. We also apply the enhanced laser pulses to substantially improve the properties of an ion bunch accelerated from a secondary target. We have studied the propagation of fast electrons through laser irradiated Ti foils by monitoring the emission of hard X-rays and K-�� radiation from bare foils and foils backed by a thick epoxy layer. Key observations include strong refluxing of electrons and divergence of the electron beam in the foil with evidence of magnetic field collimation. Our diagnostics have allowed us to estimate the fast electron temperature and fraction of laser energy converted to fast electrons. We have observed clear differences between the fast electron temperatures observed with bare and epoxy backed targets which may be due to the effects of refluxing.

Relativistic electrons are prodigious sources of photons. Beyond classical accelerators, ultra-intense laser interactions are of particular interest as they allow the coherent motion of relativistic electrons to be controlled and exploited as sources of radiation. Under extreme laser conditions theory predicts that isolated free relativistic electron sheets (FRES) can be produced and exploited for the production of a new class of radiation - unipolar extreme ultraviolet(XUV) pulses. However, the combination of extremely rapid rise-time and highest peak intensity in these simulations is still beyond current laser technology. We demonstrate a route to isolated FRES with existing lasers by exploiting relativistic transparency to produce an ultra-intense pulse with a steep rise time. When such an FRES interacts with a second, oblique target foil the electron sheet is rapidly accelerated ('kicked'). The radiation signature and simulations demonstrate that a single, nanometer thick FRES was produced. The experimental observations together with our theoretical modeling suggest the production of the first unipolar (half-cycle) pulse in the XUV - an achievement that has so far only been realized in the terahertz spectral domain., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Relativistic laser plasmas have been shown to provide a robust platform for the generation of bright attosecond pulses via the relativistically oscillating mirror and coherent wake emission mechanisms. Theoretical work, however, has shown an alternative method for achieving this goal: dense nanobunch formation and acceleration on timescales of less than an optical laser cycle (~10−15 s) during relativistic laser–plasma interactions. This opens up the exciting potential for developing a new bright ultrafast extreme ultraviolet XUV/x-ray source. Here we demonstrate, using a previously unexplored geometry, coherent synchrotron emission generated during relativistically intense laser–ultrathin foil interactions which extends to ~1 keV photon energies. Particle-in-cell code simulations reveal how periodic sub-laser cycle acceleration of dense nanobunches of electrons formed during normal incidence interactions result in bursts of bright attosecond radiation in transmission and how these pulses relate to plasma density scalelength. This work shows clear potential for a novel, intense source of attosecond XUV (~10−18 s) radiation. Experimentally, high order (n) harmonic spectra (I(n)) are characterized by a slow decay (n−1.62 ) before a rapid efficiency rollover. Such a microscopic coherent synchrotron source (

We report on the laser-driven generation of purely neutral, relativistic electron-positron pair plasmas. The overall charge neutrality, high average Lorentz factor ($\gamma_{e/p} \approx 15$), small divergence ($\theta_{e/p} \approx 10 - 20$ mrad), and high density ($n_{e/p}\simeq 10^{15}$cm$^{-3}$) of these plasmas open the pathway for the experimental study of the dynamics of this exotic state of matter, in regimes that are of relevance to electron-positron astrophysical plasmas., Comment: The manuscript is withdrawn from ArXiv because of conflicting interests

A novel regime is proposed where, by employing linearly polarized laser pulses at intensities 10(21) W cm(-2) (2 orders of magnitude lower than discussed in previous work [T. Esirkepov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 175003 (2004)]), ions are dominantly accelerated from ultrathin foils by the radiation pressure and have monoenergetic spectra. In this regime, ions accelerated from the hole-boring process quickly catch up with the ions accelerated by target normal sheath acceleration, and they then join in a single bunch, undergoing a hybrid light-sail-target normal sheath acceleration. Under an appropriate coupling condition between foil thickness, laser intensity, and pulse duration, laser radiation pressure can be dominant in this hybrid acceleration. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that 1.26 GeV quasimonoenergetic C6+ beams are obtained by linearly polarized laser pulses at intensities of 10(21) W cm(-2).

A novel regime is proposed where, employing linearly polarized laser pulses at intensities $10^{21}\textrm{Wcm}^{-2}$ as two order of magnitude lower than earlier predicted [T. Esirkepov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 175003 (2004)], ions are dominantly accelerated from ultrathin foils by the radiation pressure, and have monoenergetic spectra. In the regime, ions accelerated from the hole-boring process quickly catch up with the ions accelerated by target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA), and they then join in a single bunch, undergoing a hybrid Light-Sail/TNSA acceleration. Under an appropriate coupling condition between foil thickness, laser intensity and pulse duration, laser radiation pressure can be dominant in this hybrid acceleration. Two-dimensional PIC simulations show that $1.26\textrm{GeV}$ quasimonoenergetic $\textrm{C}^{6+}$ beams are obtained by linearly polarized laser pulses at intensities of $10^{21}\textrm{Wcm}^{-2}$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report on the characterization of the specular reflection of 50 fs laser pulses in the intensity range 10(17)-10(21)Wcm(-2) obliquely incident with p-polarization onto solid density plasmas. These measurements show that the absorbed energy fraction remains approximately constant and that second harmonic generation (SHG) achieves efficiencies of 22 +/- 8% for intensities approaching 10(21)Wcm(-2). A simple model based on the relativistic oscillating mirror concept reproduces the observed intensity scaling, indicating that this is the dominant process involved for these conditions. This method may prove to be superior to SHG by sum frequency mixing in crystals as it is free from dispersion and retains high spatial coherence at high intensity.

The accurate control of the relative phase of multiple distinct sources of radiation produced by high harmonic generation is of central importance in the continued development of coherent extreme UV (XUV) and attosecond sources. Here, we present a novel approach which allows extremely accurate phase control between multiple sources of high harmonic radiation generated within the Rayleigh range of a single-femtosecond laser pulse using a dual-gas, multi-jet array. Fully ionized hydrogen acts as a purely passive medium and allows highly accurate control of the relative phase between each harmonic source. Consequently, this method allows quantum path selection and rapid signal growth via the full coherent superposition of multiple HHG sources (the so-called quasi-phase-matching). Numerical simulations elucidate the complex interplay between the distinct quantum paths observed in our proof-of-principle experiments.

In this letter we report on an experimental study of high harmonic radiation generated in nanometer-scale foil targets irradiated under normal incidence. The experiments constitute the first unambiguous observation of odd-numbered relativistic harmonics generated by the $\vec{v}\times\vec{B}$ component of the Lorentz force verifying a long predicted property of solid target harmonics. Simultaneously the observed harmonic spectra allow in-situ extraction of the target density in an experimental scenario which is of utmost interest for applications such as ion acceleration by the radiation pressure of an ultraintense laser., 5 pages, 4 figures

The transport of relativistic electrons generated in the interaction of petawatt class lasers with solid targets has been studied through measurements of the second harmonic optical emission from their rear surface. The high degree of polarization of the emission indicates that it is predominantly optical transition radiation (TR). A halo that surrounds the main region of emission is also polarized and is attributed to the effect of electron recirculation. The variation of the polarization state and intensity of radiation with the angle of observation indicates that the emission of TR is highly directional and provides evidence for the presence of μm-size filaments. A brief discussion on the possible causes of such a fine electron beam structure is given. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

In laser-plasma interactions it is widely accepted that a non-uniform interaction surface will invariably seed hydrodynamic instabilities and a growth in the amplitude of the initial modulation. Recent experimental results [Dromey, Nat. Phys. 2009] have demonstrated that there must be target smoothing in femtosecond timescale relativistic interactions, contrary to prevailing expectation. In this paper we develop a theoretical description of the physical process that underlies this novel phenomena. We show that the surface dynamics in the few-cycle relativistic regime is dominated by the coherent electron motion resulting in a smoothing of the electron surface. This stabilization of plasma surfaces is unique in laser-plasma interactions and demonstrates that dynamics in the few-cycle regime differ fundamentally from the longer pulse regimes. This has important consequences for applications such as radiation pressure acceleration of protons and ions and harmonic generation from relativistically oscillating surfaces., 5 pages, 4 figures

Kα x-ray emission, extreme ultraviolet emission, and plasma imaging techniques have been used to diagnose energy transport patterns in copper foils ranging in thickness from 5 to 75μm for intensities up to 5×1020Wcm-2. The Kα emission and shadowgrams both indicate a larger divergence angle than that reported in the literature at lower intensities. Foils 5μm thick show triple-humped plasma expansion patterns at the back and front surfaces. Hybrid code modeling shows that this can be attributed to an increase in the mean energy of the fast electrons emitted at large radii, which only have sufficient energy to form a plasma in such thin targets. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

Harmonic orders up to the 68th in first order diffraction and the 75th in second order have been observed during the interaction of a picosecond, 1053-nm laser pulse with a solid target for intensities of 10(19) Wcm(-2). Measurements of the conversion efficiency, spatial coherence, and angular distribution show that this source has already achieved a spectral brightness second only to collisional XUV lasers. Future directions of investigation are outlined.
