The objectives of this study were to characterize mir21, miR31, mir143, mir145, and control RNU43, which are differentially expressed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of breast and colorectal cancer patients, compared to that in controls and to establish whether this is specific to breast and colon cancer for use as tumor markers.Methods: Thirty newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer and 30 patients with colorectal cancer were enrolled together with 30 healthy controls. PBMCs were isolated from venous blood samples of individuals. Next, miRNA expression analysis was performed by a two-step method of reverse transcription and qPCR.Results: The expression levels of miR-143 and miR-31 were significantly decreased, whereas the expression levels of miR-145 and miR-21 were significantly increased in breast cancer patients compared to those in healthy subjects. Moreover, the expression levels of miR-143, miR-145, and miR-21 were significantly increased and, in contrast, the changes in the expression levels of miR-31 were not statistically significant in colon cancer compared to those in healthy subjects. miR-21 exhibited the highest increase in both breast and colon cancers. There was a weak positive correlation between miR-145 and CA-15.3 in patients with breast cancer (r = 0.451; p = 0.012). miR-143 was positively correlated with the TNM stage in colon cancer patients (r = 0.568; p = 0.001).Conclusion: A biomarker panel composed of miR-21, miR-31, miR-143, and miR-145 in PBMC may provide a new diagnostic approach for the early detection of breast and colon cancer. As miR-21 expression was found to be the highest among all the miRNAs evaluated, it may represent a new tumor biomarker and a candidate therapeutic drug or gene target in colon and breast cancer.Keywords: breast cancer, colon cancer, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, mir21, mir31, mir143, mir145

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection resulting from the tissue infestation of the larval stage of the parasite Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatid cysts superinfected with pyogenic organisms have been reported previously. Brucellosis is more prevalent in people with close contact to animals and those consuming fresh milk or fresh milk products. Although these two disorders have some similar epidemiological features, we did not encounter any hydatid cyst cases superinfected with Brucella species (sp.) in a search of medical literature (Pubmed). Here, we present a case of hydatid cyst disease superinfected with Brucella and review the literature on other hydatid cyst cases superinfected with pyogenic organisms. We conclude that in regions where brucellosis and hydatid cysts are endemic, cysts may be infected with Brucella sp.

The interaction-region design for a linac-ring electronproton collider based on the LHC (“LR-LHeC”) [1, 2] poses numerous challenges related to collision scheme, synchrotron radiation, aperture, magnet technology, and optics. We report a first assessment and various options.

1st International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC 2010 -- 23 May 2010 through 28 May 2010 -- Kyoto -- 100155, Turkish Accelerator Center Infrared Free Electron Laser and Bremsstrahlung (TAC IR FEL&Brems.) project aims to produce cw mode FEL in 2.5-250 microns range and to produce bremsstrahlung photons using 15-40 MeV electron beam. The project is supported by State Planning Organization (SPO) of Turkey and is proceeded with inter university collaboration under the coordination of Ankara University. This facility is now called Turkish Accelerator and Radiation Laboratory at Ankara (TARLA) since its building located at Golbasi town 15 km south of Ankara, Turkey. It is proposed that the facility will consist of 300 keV thermionic DC gun, two superconducting RF module and two optical resonator systems with 25 and 90 mm period lengths. In this study, the status and road map of the project is presented including some technical details on accelerator and FEL. In addition the research potential of facility is summarized.

Although successful short-term results have been achieved with the use of overlapping sphincteroplasty and primary end-to- end repairs to treat fecal incontinence due to sphincteric injury, long-term failure rates may reach as high as 50%. This disadvantage associated with tension repairs may be overcome by utilizing a tension-free technique. Here the authors describe a new tension-free technique involving the use of prolene mesh.

Some operative techniques in fundoplication seem to increase the incidence of obstructive symptoms. Some authors believe that using intraesophageal bougie and preparing a short and floppy valve in laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication will help to decrease any possible tight crus repair and wrap and so it is effective to decrease the prevalence of postoperative dysphagia. The aim of this study is to show that there is no absolute benefit of routine insertion of a bougie during laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in relation to post-operative dysphagia.All patients who underwent laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication by a single surgeon between January 2001 and August 2011 were reviewed retrospectively. Esophageal bougie intubation was performed in none of the 154 patients. The operation technique, the duration of the operation, hospital stay and the improvement of the symptoms were assessed. The patients who had esophagitis with Barrett's esophagus and who had hiatal hernia that could not get benefit from medical therapy, were selected for the surgery. Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication with cruroraphy were done in all patients.Ninety-six of the patients were female and 58 were male. The mean symptom duration was 3.6±0.6 years. The only complication was dysphagia. In eighth week, dysphagia resolved in all patients.Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication can be safely performed without the routine use of an esophageal bougie and it does not increase the postoperative dysphagia rate.

Background/aim: The variations and anomalies of the kidneys besides the variations of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and left renal vein (LRV) are mostly asymptomatic, but they carry potential risks particularly during retroperitoneal surgery and radiological interventions. Our aim was to find the frequencies, types, and sex distribution of renal anomalies and variations of the IVC and LRV utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and methods: Between November 2010 and April 2011, a retrospective study was conducted including lumbar spinal MRI of 3000 consecutive patients (1869 females and 1131 males) with a median age of 54 years (range: 9-78 years). Results: The percentages of renal anomalies and variations of the IVC and LRV were 0.9%, 0.07%, and 2.6%, respectively. Sex did not affect the distribution of renal anomalies (P = 0.2), IVC variations (P = 0.72), or LRV variations (P = 0.26).Conclusion: Lumbar spinal MRI is useful in detecting renal anomalies and variations of the IVC and LRV.

Bu çalışmanın amacı ekinokok kistlerinin spontan veya travmatik olarak intraabdominal yırtılması sonucu olarak tanımlanan abdominal hidatik kist hastalığının önlenmesinde %1'lik polivinilprolidon-iyot ( Betadin, PVP-1) ve %2'lik Taurolidin'in etkisini araştırmaktır. Çalışma hiçbir ajana maruz kalmayan, 2 ve 5 dakika %1'lik PVP'ye; 2 ve 5 dakika %2'lik Taurolidin'e maruz kalan gruplar olarak beş gruba ayrılmış 50 rasgele seçilmiş farede yapılmıştır. In vitro eozin boya ile boyanmasına ve in vivo abdominal hidatidosise göre PVP-I'in skolisidal etkiye sahip olduğu ve Taurolidinin etkisi olmadığı görülmüştür. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of 1% polyvinylprolidone-iodine (Betadine, PVP-I) and 2% Taurolidine as scolicidal agents for the prevention of abdominal hydatidosis defined as the rupture of the echinococcal cyst spontaneously or traumatically. The study was carried out in fifty mice randomly assigned into 5 treatment groups as following: group with no expose to any scolicidal agent, groups with 1% PVP-I for 2 and 5 minutes; groups with 2 % Taurolidine for 2 minutes, and 5 minutes. PVP-I has found to be effective according to results of staining with the eosin dye in vitro and abdominal hydatidosis in vivo, while Taurolidine was ineffective as a scolicidal agent.
