Background and Aims: Cirrhosis is associated with an increased risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) and hepatorenal syndrome (HRS). Healthcare utilization and cost burden of AKI and HRS in cirrhosis is unknown. We aimed to analyze the health care use and cost burden associated with AKI and HRS in patients with cirrhosis in the United States by using real-world claims data. Methods: We conducted a case-control study using the Truven Health MarketScan Commercial Claims databases from 2007-2017. A total of 34,398 patients with cirrhosis with or without AKI and 4,364 patients with cirrhosis with or without HRS were identified using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth or Tenth Revision, codes and matched 1:1 by sociodemographic characteristics and comorbidities using propensity scores. Total and service-specific were quantified for the 12-months following versus the 12-months before the first date of AKI or HRS diagnosis and over 12-months following a randomly selected date for cirrhosis controls to capture entire disease burdens. Results: The AKI and HRS group had a higher number of comorbidities and were associated with higher rates of readmission and mortality. The AKI and HRS groups had a significantly higher prevalence of ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP), encephalopathy, gastrointestinal bleeding, septic shock, pulmonary edema, and respiratory failure. Lewis base molecules that bind undercoordinated lead atoms at interfaces and grain boundaries (GBs) are known to enhance the durability of metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Using density functional theory calculations, we found that phosphine-containing molecules have the strongest binding energy among members of a library of Lewis base molecules studied herein. Experimentally, we found that the best inverted PSC treated with 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (DPPP), a diphosphine Lewis base that passivates, binds, and bridges interfaces and GBs, retained a power conversion efficiency (PCE) slightly higher than its initial PCE of ~23% after continuous operation under simulated AM1.5 illumination at the maximum power point and at ~40°C for >3500 hours. DPPP-treated devices showed a similar increase in PCE after being kept under open-circuit conditions at 85°C for >1500 hours.

Wide exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) poses a great risk on human health. However, few large-scale cohort studies have comprehensively estimated the association between EDCs exposure and mortality risk. This study aimed to investigate the association of urinary EDCs exposure with mortality risk and quantify attributable mortality and economic loss. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were performed to investigate the association of 38 representative EDCs exposure with mortality risk in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). During a median follow-up of 7.7 years, 47,279 individuals were enrolled. All-cause mortality was positively associated with 1-hydroxynaph-thalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, cadmium, antimony, cobalt, and monobenzyl phthalate. Cancer mortality was positively associated with cadmium. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality was positively associated with 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaph-thalene, and 2-hydroxyfluorene. Nonlinear U-shaped relationships were found between all-cause mortality and cadmium and cobalt, which was also identified between 2-hydroxyfluorene and CVD mortality. J-shaped association of cadmium exposure with cancer mortality was also determined. EDCs exposure may cause 56.52% of total deaths (1,528,500 deaths) and around 1,897 billion USD in economic costs. Exposure to certain phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phytoestrogens, or toxic metals, even at substantially low levels, is significantly associated with mortality and induces high economic costs.

The study was performed to evaluate the effects of the reduced lactate production by sodium oxamate (SO) on growth performance, lactate and glucose and lipid metabolism, and glucose tolerance of Micropterus salmoides fed high-carbohydrate (CHO) diets. In in vitro study, primary hepatocytes were incubated for 48 h in a control medium (5.5 mM glucose), a high-glucose medium (25 mM glucose, HG), or a SO-containing high-glucose medium (25 mM glucose + 50 mM SO, HG-SO). Results indicated lactate and triglyceride (TG) levels, and lactate dehydrogenase a (LDH-a) expression in the HG-SO group were remarkably lower than those of the HG group. In in vivo study, M. salmoides (5.23 ± 0.03 g) were fed four diets containing a control diet (10% CHO, C) and three SO contents [0 (HC), 100 (HC-SO1), and 200 (HC-SO2) mg·kg−1, respectively] of high-CHO diets (20% CHO) for 11 wk. High-CHO diets significantly reduced weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR), p-AMPK-to-t-AMPK ratio, and expression of insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), insulin-like growth factor I receptor (IGF-IR), fructose-1,6-biphosphatase (FBPase), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), and carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1α (CPT1α) compared with the C group, whereas the opposite was true for plasma levels of glucose, TG, lactate, tissue glycogen, and lipid contents, and expression of LDH-a, monocarboxylate transporter 1 and 4 (MCT1 and MCT4), insulin, glucokinase (GK), pyruvate dehydrogenase E1 subunit (PDH), sterol-regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1), fatty acid synthase (FAS). The HC-SO2 diets remarkably increased WGR, SGR, p-AMPK-to-t-AMPK ratio, and expression of IRS1, IGF-I, IGF-IR, GK, PDHα, PDHβ, FAS, acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1), PPARα, and CPT1α compared with the HC group. Besides, HC-SO2 diets also enhanced glucose tolerance of fish after a glucose loading. Overall, the reduced lactate production by SO benefits growth performance and glucose homeostasis of high-CHO-fed M. salmoides through the enhancement of glycolysis, lipogenesis, and fatty acid β-oxidation coupled with the suppression of glycogenesis and gluconeogenesis.

Wireless capsule endoscopes (WCEs) are pill-sized camera-embedded devices that can provide visualization of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by capturing and transmitting images to an external receiver. Determination of the exact location of the WCE is crucial for the accurate navigation of the WCE through external guidance, tracking of the GI abnormality, and the treatment of the detected disease. Despite the enormous progress in the real-time tracking of the WCE, a well-calibrated analytical model is still missing for the accurate localization of WCEs by the measurements from different onboard sensing units. In this paper, a well-calibrated analytical model for the magnetic localization of the WCE was established by optimizing the magnetic moment in the magnetic dipole model. The Jacobian-based iterative method was employed to solve the position of the WCE. An error model was established and experimentally verified for the analysis and prediction of the localization errors caused by inaccurate measurements from the magnetic field sensor. The assessment of the real-time localization of the WCE was performed via experimental trials using an external permanent magnet (EPM) mounted on a robotic manipulator and a WCE equipped with a 3-axis magnetic field sensor and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The localization errors were measured under different translational and rotational motion modes and working spaces. The results showed that the selection of workspace (distance relative to the EPM) could lead to different positioning errors. The proposed magnetic localization method holds great potential for the real-time localization of WCEs when performing complex motions during GI diagnosis.

The association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains controversial, and few have considered the effects of sleep quality. We performed a meta-analysis to clarify the relationship of sleep duration and sleep quality with the risk of MetS.We conducted a systematic and comprehensive literature search of electronic databases from inception to 17 February 2022. The effect sizes of covariates from each study were pooled using a random or fixed model, and a restricted cubic spline random-effects meta-analysis was performed to examine the dose-response relationship between sleep duration and MetS.A total of 62 studies were included in this meta-analysis. Compared to normal sleep duration, short sleep duration [odds ratio (OR) = 1.14, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.10-1.19] and long sleep duration (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.09-1.23) were associated with an increased risk of MetS. The restricted cubic spline analysis indicated that sleep durations of 8.5 h (OR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.92-0.97) and 11 h (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.31-1.91) were significantly associated with the risk of MetS. The pooled results showed that poor sleep quality (OR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.03-2.06) and sleep complaints had significant positive associations with MetS.Our results demonstrated that short sleep duration increased the risk of developing MetS. Long sleep duration was also associated with MetS, especially for 11 h. 8.5 h can be considered the recommended sleep duration for MetS. Poor sleep quality and sleep complaints were also associated with MetS.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the immunomodulatory effects of sulforaphane (SFN), a nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) pathway activator, on splenic macrophages' immunocompetence after hemorrhagic shock/resuscitation (HS/R).Male C57/BL6 wild-type mice (n = 6 per group) were subjected to either pressure-controlled hemorrhagic shock (HS) (MAP 35-45 mmHg) or a sham procedure surgery (without HS). After 90 min of HS, fluid resuscitation with withdrawn blood and 0.9% NaCl was performed. SFN (50 mg/kg body weight) was applied intraperitoneally immediately after the resuscitation phase as well as 24 h and 48 h thereafter, depending on group allocation. The mice were sacrificed at 6 h, 24 h, and 72 h after resuscitation. After sacrifice, spleens were harvested to perform Nrf2 immunofluorescence histology. Splenic macrophages were isolated and cultured to measure cytokine secretion in the cell culture supernatant. Furthermore, macrophages isolated after 24 h resuscitation were treated with 100 ng/ml bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to measure immunocompetence. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) was performed to verify the distribution of SFN in the spleen after intraperitoneal injection.We showed that administered SFN reached the spleen within the first hour post-administration. Furthermore, we identified that SFN increased splenic Nrf2 activation and decreased cytokine expression in splenic macrophages after HS/R. In addition, we showed that SFN exhibited splenic anti-inflammatory properties of macrophages in vitro (IL-6/IL-10-ratio of the HS/R group: 51.79 ± 9.99 (at 6 h) and 15.70 ± 3.35 (at 24 h) vs. HS/R + SFN group: 20.54 ± 5.35 (at 6 h) and 8.60 ± 2.37 (at 24 h), (p0.05)). Furthermore, SFN improved in vitro splenic macrophage immunocompetence after HS/R, as evidenced by the increased secretion of inflammatory cytokines in response to LPS stimulation in vitro.Our study shows that SFN can reduce inflammatory cytokines secreted by splenic macrophages after HS/R and increase their immunocompetence toward a more anti-inflammatory profile.

Ambrosia beetles from the tribe Xyleborini are part of nearly all forest ecosystems. Because of their small size, haplodiploid mating structure, and protected lives inside the sapwood of woody plants, they have a unique ability to expand into new regions via inadvertent human transport. A small number of invasive xyleborines cause significant damage to forests, lumber concerns, and agricultural systems. Most ambrosia pests damage or kill trees by the accumulation of beetle attacks, one is known to cause tree death through the introduction of pathogenic fungus into susceptible Lauraceae trees. The relationships between ambrosia fungi and their beetle vectors range from mutualistic symbiosis to facultative association, but most remain unstudied. Unresolved taxonomies, convergent morphologies, and the difficulty of sampling ambrosia fungi over their entire global ranges make comprehensive surveys of ambrosia fungi difficult to achieve. Ambrosia fungi from Europe and North America are moderately well documented, however, we have yet to sufficiently document those from Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America. Worldwide cooperation to improve and standardize scientific study of the ambrosia symbioses is needed to better understand these impactful organisms.

The development of efficient and sustainable electrochemical systems able to provide clean-energy fuels and chemicals is one of the main current challenges of materials science and engineering. Over the last decades, significant advances have been made in the development of robust electrocatalysts for different reactions, with fundamental insights from both computational and experimental work. Some of the most promising systems in the literature are based on expensive and scarce platinum-group metals; however, natural enzymes show the highest per-site catalytic activities, while their active sites are based exclusively on earth-abundant metals. Additionally, natural biomass provides a valuable feedstock for producing advanced carbonaceous materials with porous hierarchical structures. Utilizing resources and design inspiration from nature can help create more sustainable and cost-effective strategies for manufacturing cost-effective, sustainable, and robust electrochemical materials and devices. Sulfur (S) is an essential macronutrient for plants and a signaling molecule in abiotic stress responses. It is known that S availability modulates root system architecture; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. We previously reported an Arabidopsis gain-of-function mutant sulfate utilization efficiency4 (sue4) that could tolerate S deficiency during germination and early seedling growth with faster primary root elongation. Here, we report that SUE4, a novel plasma membrane-localized protein, interacts with the polar auxin transporter PIN1, resulting in reduced PIN1 protein levels and thus decreasing auxin transport to the root tips, which promotes primary root elongation. Moreover, SUE4 is induced by sulfate deficiency, consistent with its role in root elongation. Further analyses showed that the SUE4-PIN1 interaction decreased PIN1 levels, possibly through 26 S proteasome-mediated degradation. Taken together, our finding of SUE4-mediated root elongation is consistent with root adaptation to highly mobile sulfate in soil, thus revealing a novel component in the adaptive response of roots to S deficiency.

Dimension-controllable supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) with aggregation-enhanced fluorescence are hierarchically fabricated through the host-guest interactions of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) and coumarin-modified tetraphenylethylene derivatives (TPEC). The three-dimensional layered SOFs could be constructed from the further stacking of two-dimensional mono-layered structures via simply regulating the self-assembly conditions including the culturing time and concentration. Upon light irradiation under the wavelength of 365 nm, the photodimerization of coumarin moieties occurred, which resulted in the transformation of the resultant TPEC n/CB[8]4 n two-dimensional SOFs into robust covalently-connected 2D polymers with molecular thickness. Interestingly, the supramolecular system of TPEC n/CB[8]4 n exhibited intriguing multicolor fluorescence emission from yellow to blue in the time range of 0−24 h at 365 nm irradiation, possessing potential applicability for photochromic fluorescence ink.
