Chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) is a skin disease that has an acute attack when patient encounters an allergen. Previous research demonstrated that microRNA (miRNA) has a crucial role in CIU occurrence and development. This study aimed to investigate the role and mechanism of miR-18a-5p in CIU. StarBase and dual luciferase reporter gene assay confirmed that thrombospondin 1 (THBS1) was a direct target of miR-18a-5p. miR-18a-5p negatively regulated THBS1 expression in human mast cell line HMC-1 and human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMECs). Further analysis indicated that miR-18a-5p mimic significantly reduced inflammatory factors including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-1β and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α release, decreased the degranulation rate and histamine release rate of HMC-1 cells. Besides, we found that miR-18a-5p reduced the permeability of HDMECs by suppressing THBS1 expression. Finally, the data indicated that miR-18a-5p inhibited the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β)/SMAD family member 3 (Smad3) signaling pathway in HDMECs by inhibiting the expression of THBS1. Taken together, the results suggested that miR-18a-5p reduced inflammation and human skin microvascular endothelial cell permeability in CIU by targeting THBS1. miR-18a-5p might be a new target for CIU treatment.

In this paper, we present a new scenario of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation using massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receive array with low-resolution analog-to-digital convertors (ADCs), which can strike a good balance between performance and circuit cost. Based on the linear additive quantization noise model (AQNM), the effect of low-resolution ADCs on the methods, such as Root-MUSIC method, is analyzed. Also, the closed-form expression of Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived to evaluate the performance loss caused by the low-resolution ADCs. The simulation results show that the Root-MUSIC methods can achieve the corresponding CRLB. Furthermore, 2-3 bits are acceptable for most applications if the 1dB performance loss.

Hepatitis C virus core-binding protein 6 (HCBP6), first characterized in our laboratory and also referred to as FUNDC2, is involved in lipid and glucose metabolism, platelet activation, and platelet survival. Here we demonstrate that hypermethylation of mitochondrial HCBP6 is linked Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) pathogenesis. Serum and liver levels of HCBP6 in PBC patients were reduced in comparison with controls. Further research confirmed a correlation between CpG1 hypermethylation and HCBP6 levels. Taken together, our results reveal another new feature of HCBP6.

Proactive edge association is capable of improving wireless connectivity at the cost of increased handover (HO) frequency and energy consumption, while relying on a large amount of private information sharing required for decision making. In order to improve the connectivity-cost trade-off without privacy leakage, we investigate the privacy-preserving joint edge association and power allocation (JEAPA) problem in the face of the environmental uncertainty and the infeasibility of individual learning. Upon modelling the problem by a decentralized partially observable Markov Decision Process (Dec-POMDP), it is solved by federated multi-agent reinforcement learning (FMARL) through only sharing encrypted training data for federatively learning the policy sought. High temperature is one of the main constraints affecting plant growth and development. It has been reported that abscisic acid (ABA) synthesis gene 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) positively regulates plant resistance to salt, cold, and drought stresses. However, little is known about the function of the NCED gene in heat tolerance of rice. Here, we found that OsNCED1 was a heat stress inducible gene. Rice seedlings overexpressing OsNCED1 showed enhanced heat tolerance with more abundant ABA content, whereas the knockout mutant osnced1 accumulated less ABA and showed more sensitive to heat stress. Under heat stress, increased expression of OsNCED1 could reduce membrane damage and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level of plants, and elevate the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, real time-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis showed that overexpression of OsNCED1 significantly activated the expression of genes involved in antioxidant enzymes, ABA signaling pathway, heat response, and defense. Together, our results indicate that OsNCED1 positively regulates heat tolerance of rice seedling by raising endogenous ABA contents, which leads to the improved antioxidant capacity and activated expression of heat and ABA related genes.

ObjectivesThe cabin-skeleton coupling structure of a blended-wing-body underwater glider is optimized using a data-driven discrete optimization concept.MethodsFirst, a Kriging-assisted discrete global optimization algorithm (KDGO) is proposed for computationally expensive black-box problems. The KDGO uses a novel infill-sampling strategy to capture discrete sample points with better performance, and introduces a multi-start method with a data mining strategy, including multi-start optimization, projection, sampling and selection. Second, a parametric cabin-skeleton coupling structure model is established using the finite element analysis method under lifting deformation and deep-water pressure conditions. The float-to-weight ratio and strength and stability of the cabin-skeleton structure are taken as the goal and constraints respectively. Considering the interference between shape and cabin, and the coupling relationship between cabin and skeleton, a discrete optimization mathematical model of the overall coupling structure is established. Finally, the discrete optimization algorithm and coupling structure simulation are combined to build an overall optimization framework.ResultsBy using KDGO to conduct 200 function evaluations and comparing the optimal feasible points in design of experiments (DoE) with the global optimal feasible points after optimization, it is found that the optimized float-to-weight ratio of the coupling structure is increased by nearly 40%, representing satisfactory results.ConclusionThe results of this study can provide valuable references for the cabin-skeleton coupling structure design of blended-wing-body underwater gliders.

We demonstrated an all-dry polymer-to-polymer transfer technique for two-dimensional (2D) crystal flakes using a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) layer deposited on a piece of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Unexpectedly, the pickup/release temperatures were modified in wider temperature range simply by changing the thickness of the PVC layer than changing the plasticizer ratio. Utilizing the difference in the pickup/release temperatures depending on the PVC film thickness, 2D flakes were transferred from a thicker PVC film to a thinner one. This polymer-to-polymer transfer technique can be utilized to flip over van der Waals heterostructures. As a demonstration, we fabricated a mountain-like stacked structure of hexagonal boron nitride flakes using the flip-over stacking technique. Finally, we compared the results of thermomechanical analysis with the pickup/release temperatures of the PVC/PDMS stamp. The PVC was revealed to be at the glass transition and in the viscoelastic flow regimes when the 2D flakes were picked up and dry released, respectively. Our polymer-to-polymer transfer method facilitates flip-over van der Waals stacking in an all-dry manner, expanding the possibility of 2D materials device fabrications.

CoMo sulfides are typical catalysts for selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolics to aromatics which is important in bio-oil upgrading. However, it is still a challenge to promote the intrinsic activity of Co-MoS2 catalysts. Defect chemistry provides a good option to improve surface reactivity in catalysis. In this work, we report a facile H2O2 etching method to tailor the concentration of surface acidic sites. The molar ratio of H2O2/MoS2 can be altered to tune sulfur defects on the MoS2 surface for stabilizing Co species to form CoMoS active sites. The optimized Co-MoS2-2 catalyst, with the highest concentration of acidic sites, exhibits 3.4 times higher activity than the Co-MoS2-0 sample in the HDO of p-cresol to toluene. It is also found the HDO activity shows a linear relationship with the amount of surface acid (both Lewis and Bronsted acid) over the Co-MoS2-x catalysts. We believe that the understanding of the role of surface acidity would provide new opportunities for the rational design of efficient Co-MoS2 catalysts.

ObjectiveTo evaluate risk factors affecting survival in patients diagnosed with pneumoconiosis and propose strategies to improve the quality of life in these patients.MethodsThe basic patient information was obtained from the pneumoconiosis report card. Disease types, regions, and industry distribution of pneumoconiosis were analyzed. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves and the Cox proportional risk regression model was used for survival analysis.ResultsA total of 13,812 patients were diagnosed with pneumoconiosis in Zhejiang province from 1987 to 2019. The overall survival rate at the end of life table analysis was 83%. Kaplan-Meier analyses showed that there were significant differences between survival curves depending on the stage of first diagnosis, age at first diagnosis, type of pneumoconiosis, industry, and duration of dust exposure (P < 0.05). The results of Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that pneumoconiosis stage of first diagnosis, age at first diagnosis, industry, and duration of dust exposure were risk factors affecting patient survival (P < 0.05).ConclusionsThe patients with high stage of pneumoconiosis at first diagnosis, older age, and long duration of dust exposure should be followed up and monitored as key population, and the industries with high incidence of pneumoconiosis such as mining and construction should be supervised as key industries.

Scientific papers published in journals or conferences, also considered academic publications, are the manifestation of scientific research achievements. Lots of scientific papers published in digital form bring new challenges for academic evaluation and information retrieval. Therefore, research on the ranking method of scientific papers is significant for the management and evaluation of academic resources. In this paper, we first identify internal and external factors for evaluating scientific papers and propose a publication ranking method based on an analysis of a heterogeneous academic network. We use four types of metadata (i.e., author, venue (journal or conference), topic, and title) as vertexes for creating the network; in there, the topics are trained by the SentenceLDA algorithm with the metadata of the abstract. We then use the Gibbs sampling method to create a heterogeneous academic network and apply the ConNetClus algorithm to calculate the probability value of publication ranking. To evaluate the significance of the method proposed in this paper, we compare the ranking results with BM25, PageRank, etc., and homogeneous networks in MAP and NDCG. As shown in our evaluation results, the performance of the method we propose in this paper is better than other baselines for ranking publications.

Online teaching transition during COVID-19 school lockdown elicited challenges for teachers and schools across the globe. The existing literature on the impact of COVID-19 in the education sector is predominantly descriptive and focused on the difficulties faced by teachers during the process of transferring into online teaching, mainly in the higher education sector. This study adopted a mixed-method design to examine online teaching self-efficacy (TSE) during COVID-19, its associated factors and moderators. A sample of 351 Chinese school teachers retrospectively reported their online TSE at the beginning and end of COVID-19 school lockdown, out of which six were followed up for an in-depth interview. Vehicle tracking is one of the important applications of the wireless sensor network (WSN), and sensor scheduling is essential in WSN for achieving an efficient tracking process. Traditional centralized sensor scheduling frameworks cannot meet real-time requirements of vehicle tracking in WSN, because of task overloading caused by limited resource consumption and communication bandwidth. To solve this problem, this letter proposes a multiagent distributed sensor scheduling framework in WSN. This letter first proposes a preactivation-based vehicle tracking model to preactive some sensors in order to reduce unnecessary resource consumption. Then, this letter develops a fully decentralized multiagent reinforcement learning (FDMARL) algorithm to design our multiagent sensor scheduling framework. The simulation results show the convergence and the superiority of our proposed FDMARL-aided sensor scheduling algorithm.

In this paper, we investigate the approximations of stochastic \begin{document}$ p $\end{document} -Laplacian equation with additive white noise by a family of piecewise deterministic partial differential equations driven by a stationary stochastic process. We firstly obtain the tempered pullback attractors for the random \begin{document}$ p $\end{document} -Laplacian equation with a general diffusion. We secondly prove the convergence of solutions and the upper semi-continuity of pullback attractors of the Wong-Zakai approximation equations in a Hilbert space for the additive case. Thirdly, by a truncation technique, the uniform compactness of pullback attractor with respect to the quantity of approximations is derived in the space of \begin{document}$ q $\end{document} -times integrable functions, where the upper semi-continuity of the attractors of the approximation equations is well established.

Introduction: An outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. This study aimed to analyze the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of patients with COVID-19 to better differentiate the suspected patients in Beijing, China. Methodology: This was a retrospective, single-center study. Clinical and epidemiologic data were collected from suspected patients with COVID-19 admitted to Beijing Ditan Hospital from January 29 to February 21, 2020. Results: One hundred and six patients (60 males and 46 females, median age 36 years) were enrolled. Thirty-six patients were ultimately laboratory confirmed. Fifty-three were excluded from the diagnosis of COVID-19. The remaining 17 patients were highly suspected, although their nucleic acid tests were repeatedly negative. The confirmed patients and highly suspected patients had a significantly higher proportion of epidemiologic history than the excluded patients (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in clinical symptoms or the underlying diseases among the three groups. The confirmed patients had a higher frequency of lymphopenia and eosinopenia than the highly suspected and excluded patients. Chest computed tomography scans showed bilateral lung involvement, and ground-glass opacity was more likely observed in the confirmed patients. Conclusion: The clinical features of the confirmed patients with COVID-19 were insufficient for early diagnosis of COVID-19. The epidemiologic history was of great significance in the early diagnosis of COVID-19. More sensitive diagnostic methods are needed to aid the differential diagnosis of suspected patients with COVID-19.

In this paper, we develop the criterion on the upper semi-continuity of random attractors by a weak-to-weak limit replacing the usual norm-to-norm limit. As an application, we obtain the convergence of random attractors for non-autonomous stochastic reaction-diffusion equations on unbounded domains, when the density of stochastic noises approaches zero. The weak convergence of solutions is proved by means of Alaoglu weak compactness theorem. A differentiability condition on nonlinearity is omitted, which implies that the existence conditions for random attractors are sufficient to ensure their upper semi-continuity. These results greatly strengthen the upper semi-continuity notion that has been developed in the literature.

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and discovered in 2019. The clinical manifestations include fever, coughing, difficulty in breathing and even death from multiple organ failure. Nucleic acid test is the golden standard method for confirmation of infection. According to the Chinese ‘Seventh Edition of the COVID-19 Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol’, suspected patients with negative nucleic acid tests from two consecutive airway specimens can be excluded from diagnosis and released from quarantine. The current report describes a suspected COVID-19 case that had a history of close contact with a COVID-19 patient. The diagnosis was confirmed after the SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid was detected after four sputum sample tests (sampling interval of at least 24 h).

The collision channel without feedback (CCw/oFB) introduced by Massey and Mathys, depicts a scenario where multiple users share a communication channel but have arbitrary time offsets, and can never learn these time offsets due to the lack of feedback. This paper considers an extension of the CCw/oFB, which allows the receiver to use successive interference cancellation (SIC) to cancel the interference caused by those collided packets whose contents have been known by the receiver. We derive the zero-packet-loss throughput regions of this model for both the unsynchronized and slot-synchronized cases. Given an arbitrary number of users and a packet alphabet of arbitrary size, it is shown that these two regions coincide, and the outer boundary of this common region is the set of all points with only nonnegative components that add up to one. It is further shown that all points on this outer boundary with only rational components can be achieved without packet loss in the slot-synchronized case. The constructive proofs are based on a joint design of protocol sequences, identification/location algorithm and erasure correcting codes. These findings indicate that the negative impact of the lack of time synchronization on the throughput performance can be removed by the help of SIC.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is envisioned to be widely applied in future wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate a multi-user communication system assisted by cooperative IRS devices with the capability of energy harvesting. Aiming to maximize the long-term average achievable system rate, an optimization problem is formulated by jointly designing the transmit beamforming at the base station (BS) and discrete phase shift beamforming at the IRSs, with the constraints on transmit power, user data rate requirement and IRS energy buffer size. Considering time-varying channels and stochastic arrivals of energy harvested by the IRSs, we first formulate the problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) and then develop a novel multi-agent Q-mix (MAQ) framework with two layers to decouple the optimization parameters. The higher layer is for optimizing phase shift resolutions, and the lower one is for phase shift beamforming and power allocation. Since the phase shift optimization is an integer programming problem with a large-scale action space, we improve MAQ by incorporating the Wolpertinger method, namely, MAQ-WP algorithm to achieve a sub-optimality with reduced dimensions of action space. In addition, as MAQ-WP is still of high complexity to achieve good performance, we propose a policy gradient-based MAQ algorithm, namely, MAQ-PG, by mapping the discrete phase shift actions into a continuous space at the cost of a slight performance loss. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MAQ-WP and MAQ-PG algorithms can converge faster and achieve data rate improvements of 10.7% and 8.8% over the conventional multi-agent DDPG, respectively., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

We propose a germanium (Ge) photonic crystal thin slab to achieve perfect absorption efficiency in telecom band. The maximum absorption is increased 14-fold compared to a planar cell with the same thickness at normal incidence. The absorption enhancement is attributed to the critical coupling with guided resonances by introducing an airhole photonic crystal on the thin slab. This novel design constitutes an important step towards high responsivity and high-speed photodetection with strong energy harvesting.

Near-infrared perfect wave harvesting of graphene is theoretically and numerically obtained in a hybrid dielectric configuration without assistance of a reflecting mirror. The absorption is increased 43-fold compared to a suspended graphene layer at normal incidence. The mechanism of perfect absorption is based on critical coupling with a guided resonance introduced by a silicon bar array and Fabry–Perot (FP) effect of a silicon oxide layer. This lossless design is expected to find applications to allow the active area with effective generation and fast transport of photocarriers, paving a new way for on-chip small-footprint ultrahigh responsivity and ultrahigh-speed photodetection in silicon photonics.

Loquat fruit are susceptible to chilling injuries induced by postharvest storage at low temperature. The major symptoms are increased lignin content and flesh firmness, which cause a leathery texture. Pretreatment with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) can alleviate this low-temperature-induced lignification, but the mechanism is not understood. In this study, we characterized a novel class III peroxidase, EjPRX12, and studied its relationship to lignification. Transcript levels of EjPRX12 were attenuated following MeJA pretreatment, consistent with the reduced lignin content in fruit. In vitro enzyme activity assay indicated that EjPRX12 polymerized sinapyl alcohol, and overexpression of EjPRX12 in Arabidopsis promoted lignin accumulation, indicating that it plays a functional role in lignin polymerization. We also identified an HD-ZIP transcription factor, EjHB1, repressed by MeJA pretreatment, which directly bound to and significantly activated the EjPRX12 promoter. Overexpression of EjHB1 in Arabidopsis promoted lignin accumulation with induced expression of lignin-related genes, especially AtPRX64. Furthermore, a JAZ-interacting repressor, EjbHLH14, was characterized, and it is proposed that MeJA pretreatment caused EjbHLH14 to be released to repress the expression of EjHB1. These results identified a novel regulatory pathway involving EjbHLH14-EjHB1-EjPRX12 and revealed the molecular mechanism whereby MeJA alleviated lignification of loquat fruit at low temperature.

Performance optimization of the inter-satellite link is the key to improve the performance of satellite networks. This article proposes a dynamic power allocation method for the inter-satellite link of Low Earth Orbit (LEO)/Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites based on the computing power of LEO satellites. A utility function is designed according to the transmission characteristic of the inter-satellite link. The existence of the Nash Equilibrium (NE) of the utility function is proved based on the super-modular game theory. The LEO satellite obtains its balanced solution of the transmission power through the Newton iteration method. In this process, based on the initial orbit parameters of the satellite and the satellite operating time, the inter-satellite link distance is predicted through the spherical geometric relationship between the LEO/MEO satellites, so that the signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) can be estimated in advance. The MEO satellite controls the penalty factor to enhance the utility of the entire network. Simulation results show that the proposed power allocation method achieves the purpose of saving power resources while improving system performance.

A multichannel conflict-avoiding code of length $L$ and weight $w$ for $M$ orthogonal channels, denoted by MC-CAC(M, L, w), is used for deterministic multiple-access without feedback. When the number of simultaneously active users is less than or equal to w, an MC-CAC(M, L, w) is able to provide a hard guarantee that each active user has a successful transmission within every consecutive $L$ time slots. An upper bound on the number of potential users, or codewords, that an MC-CAC(2, L, 3) can support is derived in this paper. By means of (hooked) Skolem sequences, we propose a new construction that can provide a series of optimal MC-CAC(2, L, 3)s in the sense that the code sizes achieve the obtained upper bounds.
