The cutaneous wound in diabetic patients frequently encounters intractable pathogenic infections due to the hyperglycemia micromilieu which is conducive to bacterial growth and multiplication. Despite the extensive clinical use of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections, the emergence of drug-resistant and super pathogens as well as the potential side effects of antibiotics have elicited alarming challenges to public health. To address this daunting concern, we devise and develop a photo-activated cascade bio-heterojunctions (C-bio-HJs) for rapid sterilization and diabetic cutaneous regeneration. In the designed C-bio-HJs, photo-generated electron-hole pairs of graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C(3)N(4)) are effectively separated with the marriage of molybdenum disulfide (MoS(2)), which achieves the augmented photodynamic antibacterial effect. Moreover, glucose oxidase (GOx) tethered on the bio-HJs catalyzes glucose into hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) in diabetic wounds for starvation therapy. Furthermore, Mo(4+) enables the catalysis of H(2)O(2) into a highly effective hydroxyl radical (·OH) for chemodynamic-photothermal combined antibacterial therapy. Both in vitro and in vivo results authenticate the cascading antibacterial properties and skin regeneration-promoting effects of the C-bio-HJs, which provide a facile strategy to combat diabetic wound healing through the synergistic GOx-primed dynamic therapies.

Serological assays are indispensable tools in public health. Presently deployed serological assays, however, largely overlook research progress made in the last two decades that jeopardizes the conceptual foundation of these assays, i.e., antibody (Ab) specificity. Challenges to traditional understanding of Ab specificity include Ab polyspecificity and most recently nonreproducible Ab-probe interactions (NRIs). Here, using SARS-CoV-2 and four common livestock viruses as a test bed, we developed a new serological platform that integrates recent understanding about Ab specificity. We first demonstrate that the response rate (RR) from a large-sized serum pool (∼100) is not affected by NRIs or by nonspecific Ab-probe interactions (NSIs), so RR can be incorporated into the diagnostic probe selection process. We subsequently used multiple probes (configured as a "protein peptide hybrid microarray", PPHM) to generate a digital microarray index (DMI) and finally demonstrated that DMI-based analysis yields an extremely robust probabilistic trend that enables accurate diagnosis of viral infection that overcomes multiple negative impacts exerted by NSI/NRI. Thus, our study with SARS-CoV-2 confirms that the PPHM-RR-DMI platform enables very rapid development of serological assays that outperform traditional assays (for both sensitivity and specificity) and supports that the platform is extendable to other viruses.

The utilization of solar energy to produce solar fuels, namely hydrogen (H2) and carbon-based fuels, represents a sustainable and clean method for fuel production.

Predicting climate anomalies months in advance is of tremendous socioeconomic value. Facing both theoretical and practical constraints, this realm of "seasonal prediction" progressed slowly in recent decades. Here we devise an innovative scheme that pushes the boundary of seasonal prediction by recognizing and isolating distinct spatiotemporal footprints left by modes of climate variability that cause varying annual cycles in response to the solar forcing. The predictive power harnessed from these spatiotemporal footprints results in a prediction skill surpassing existing models for seasonal forecasts of eastern China rainfall, which is one of the most challenging seasonal prediction problems. By considering varying annual cycles explicitly, the new scheme is able to predict multi-provincial flood and/or drought occurrences seamlessly over an entire year. This novel scheme is generically applicable for improving seasonal forecasts over other monsoon regions and for critical climate variables such as surface temperature and Arctic sea-ice extent.

Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) play a key role in regulating variability in the U.S. water and energy cycle. Here a hierarchical dissection of the multiscale forcing of springtime MCSs is carried out through a two-step classification process. Hierarchical clustering is first applied to spatiotemporally evolving upper-tropospheric height fields to reveal large-scale forcing patterns of MCSs. Five distinct forcing patterns (clusters) are identified with three being “remotely forced” and two associated with “local growth.” The upper-level troughs associated with these forcing patterns create broad envelopes downstream within which large-scale ascent and MCS genesis tend to occur. Further classification of MCSs based on MCS track locations reveals that local dynamic and thermodynamic forcing determines the precise locations of MCS genesis in the envelope created by large-scale forcing. Specifically, MCSs often occur near surface fronts in warm sectors of surface low pressure systems and are accompanied by low-level kinematic and moisture convergence driven by low-level jets (LLJs). Nearly 50% of spring MCSs are associated with potential instability realized through frontal lifting, and the highest probability of MCS genesis is seen with an environmental CAPE of ∼1400 J kg−1 and CIN of ∼150 J kg−1. The positive trend of the U.S. MCS genesis frequency observed in recent decades is found to be driven by the cluster of MCSs forced at large scale by the Pacific storm track. Regression analysis further suggests that the growing phase of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) modulates the associated MCS large-scale forcing and is ultimately responsible for the positive MCS trend. Significance Statement The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic classification of multiscale forcing factors triggering mesoscale convective system development over the United States. These storms are very active in spring and often lead to intense rainfall and other weather hazards such as lightning, hail, and tornadoes. They play a key role in the U.S. hydrological cycle and have been occurring more frequently over the past several decades. Our study reveals the detailed characteristics of atmospheric forcing leading to these storms. Such information lays theoretical grounds for designing prediction schemes of warm season severe weather and provides guidance for model development to improve climate models’ simulation and long-term projection of these storms.

Birefringence in diamond is an optical phenomenon related to strain and various defects in crystal lattices. Despite extensive investigations being done to characterize and quantify it, there is still controversy about its origin in diamond lattices. Here we report the relationship between the distribution of birefringence patterns observed under cross-polarized light, strain features analyzed by Raman mapping, and the impurity characteristics revealed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) mapping in natural mixed-habit diamonds. It was deduced that the plastic deformation was enhanced with higher tensile residual stress, and nitrogen and VN3H defects were more enriched as a result of the temperature increase during crystallization, at growth bands showing straight birefringence patterns and the relative enrichment of graphite inclusions. These results provided solid data and insights for birefringence-related properties in diamond and correlated the occurrence of birefringence with diamond spectroscopic properties, which promoted the understanding of the formation of birefringence in natural diamonds and would be helpful for the synthesis of high-quality, birefringence-free diamonds.

An effective method for selectively oxidizing benzylic and allylic alcohols, including those deactivated by electron-withdrawing groups, was described with hypervalent iodine (III)/catalytic DDQ under mild conditions. This reaction could be performed smoothly under metal-free conditions, providing green access to corresponding carbonyl compounds. The methodology may be attractive for organic synthesis and pharmaceutical chemistry.

As a flexible and elastic structure, the dynamic morphometry of medial longitudinal arch remains to be an unresolved Issue for clinic. Here we introduce a new measurement named arch volume to describe the morphological changes of the medial longitudinal arch during weight-bearing and compare with present method for measuring MLA.64 healthy participants were enrolled. And the dynamic arch morphology was measured under four weight bearing status with navicular height, arch area and arch volume, respectively.With the increase of weight loading, the flattening or slightly deformation of medial longitudinal arch was observed by all method (p0.05). However, as a 3D indicator, arch volume not only showed higher sensitivity than other method, but also provide visualization of MLA during loading changing.Compared with navicular height and arch area, arch volume has a significant advantage in describing arch morphological changes under different weight bearing status.

The plastid (chloroplast) genome of higher plants is an appealing target for metabolic engineering via genetic transformation. Although the bacterial-type plastid genome is small compared with the nuclear genome, it can accommodate large quantities of foreign genes that precisely integrate through homologous recombination. Engineering complex metabolic pathways in plants often requires simultaneous and concerted expression of multiple transgenes, the possibility of stacking several transgenes in synthetic operons makes the transplastomic approach amazing. The potential for extraordinarily high-level transgene expression, absence of epigenetic gene silencing and transgene containment due to the exclusion of plastids from pollen transmission in most angiosperm species further add to the attractiveness of plastid transformation technology. This minireview describes recent advances in expanding the toolboxes for plastid genome engineering, and highlights selected high-value metabolites produced using transplastomic plants, including artemisinin, astaxanthin and paclitaxel.

The prevalence of low clouds significantly affects flight safety in Southwest China. However, relevant cloud parameters, especially low cloud-base height (LCBH), lack accurate forecasts. Based on the hourly atmospheric vertical profiles of ERA5 from 2008 to 2019, we developed a new algorithm for estimating LCBH by combining relative humidity (RH) threshold methods with convective condensation level (CCL) (RHs-CCL). To evaluate the performance of RHs-CCL, we use it to estimate the hourly LCBH of airports in Southwest China and compare the results with those based on the ground-based observations and the ERA5 CBH data. Using the observations as a ground truth, we compare the RHs-CCL algorithm with several existing algorithms with the following findings: 1) The correlation coefficient between RHs-CCL and observations reaches 0.5 on average, and the error of RHs-CCL is smaller than those of existing algorithms, with the minimum mean absolute error and root-mean-square error at the four airports studies being able to reach 243 and 321 m. 2) The bias score of RHs-CCL is 0.97 on average, and low clouds classification utilizing RHs-CCL attains the highest accuracy, up to 86%. 3) The errors of ERA5 CBH are the largest when compared with the others. 4) By implementing convective cloud occurrence condition and CCL, RHs-CCL has better applicability in regions of enhanced convective activity. These results suggest the potential of RHs-CCL as an algorithm moving forward for improvement of the LCBH estimates based upon high-resolution reanalysis products and for better predictions of the LCBH utilizing outputs from numerical weather prediction models. Significance Statement The new algorithm developed in this study can accurately estimate low cloud-base heights from vertical profiles of atmospheric variables. It provides us a much more computationally efficient approach for predicting low cloud-base height relative to running cloud models, which is critical for weather forecasting at locations lacking computational resources and/or cloud modeling capability. In areas such as Southwest China, low clouds are very common, and they pose major threats to aviation safety. The new algorithm has been successfully integrated into the daily operation at Guiyang Airport in Southwest China and demonstrated excellent skills in estimating cloud-base heights. The implementation of the algorithm in aviation forecasting over a broader region is on the horizon.

This study aims to promote the return of special physical education to the mainstream education system and ensure the normal advancement of inclusive physical education courses in colleges and universities. Consequently, all educatees can enjoy equal educational resources, obtain comprehensive development, and realize the fairness of education. Based on the grounded theory, the first-line physical education teachers from 6 inclusive and demonstrative colleges and universities in China were selected for in-depth interviews, and 20 pieces of interview materials were collected and sorted. The NVIVO12 software was employed to collate data and determine the risks of inclusive physical education. The results demonstrated that the factors causing school sports injury accidents mainly included human factors, material factors, and management factors. Under the guidance of the three-level prevention theory in the field of medical prevention and medicine, the three-level safety prevention and control concept of sports injury was introduced, and the theoretical model of the safety prevention and control mechanism of special physical education courses was constructed.

Beetle Antennae Search algorithm is a kind of intelligent optimization algorithms, which has the advantages of few parameters and simplicity. However, due to its inherent limitations, BAS has poor performance in complex optimization problems. The existing improvements of BAS are mainly based on the utilization of multiple beetles or combining BAS with other algorithms. The present study improves BAS from its origin and keeps the simplicity of the algorithm. First, an adaptive step size reduction method is used to increase the usability of the algorithm, which is based on an accurate factor and curvilinearly reduces the step size; second, the calculated information of fitness functions during each iteration are fully utilized with a contemporary optimal update strategy to promote the optimization processes; third, the theoretical analysis of the multi-directional sensing method is conducted and utilized to further improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Finally, the proposed Enhanced Beetle Antennae Search algorithm is compared with many other algorithms based on unbiased test functions. The test functions are unbiased when their solution space does not contain simple patterns, which may be used to facilitate the searching processes. As a result, EBAS outperformed BAS with at least 1 orders of magnitude difference. The performance of EBAS was even better than several state-of-the-art swarm-based algorithms, such as Slime Mold Algorithm and Grey Wolf Optimization, with similar running times. In addition, a WSN coverage optimization problem is tested to demonstrate the applicability of EBAS on real-world optimizations.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is currently one of the malignant tumors with the highest incidence and mortality rate in China. Circular RNA hsa_circ_0000896 (circFARSA) has been reported as being an oncogene and a potential biomarker for NSCL. However, the functional role and action mechanism of circFARSA in NSCLC progression have not been fully elucidated. The present study demonstrated that circFRASA was upregulated in NSCLC tissues and cell lines, and its expression was positively correlated with poor prognosis of patients with NSCLC. Hybrid incompatibility as a kind of reproductive isolation contributes to speciation. The nucleocytoplasmic incompatibility between Xenopus tropicalis eggs and Xenopus laevis sperm ( t e × l s ) leads to specific loss of paternal chromosomes 3L and 4L. The hybrids die before gastrulation, of which the lethal causes remain largely unclear. Here, we show that the activation of the tumor suppressor protein P53 at late blastula stage contributes to this early lethality. We find that in stage 9 embryos, P53-binding motif is the most enriched one in the up-regulated Assay for Transposase-Accessible Chromatin with high-throughput sequencing (ATAC-seq) peaks between t e × l s and wild-type X. tropicalis controls, which correlates with an abrupt stabilization of P53 protein in t e × l s hybrids at stage 9. Inhibition of P53 activity via either tp53 knockout or overexpression of a dominant-negative P53 mutant or Murine double minute 2 proto-oncogene (Mdm2), a negative regulator of P53, by mRNA injection can rescue the t e × l s early lethality. Our results suggest a causal function of P53 on hybrid lethality prior to gastrulation.

We aimed to investigate the immunophenotype, differential diagnosis, and clinicopathological characteristics of signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) derived from gastric foveolar epithelium.Clinical characteristics, endoscopic findings, histopathological features, and follow-up data of seven cases of SRCC derived from gastric foveolar epithelium with small intramucosal lesions were analyzed.Seven patients with a mean age of 38.3 years were diagnosed with SRCC derived from gastric foveolar epithelium and small intramucosal lesions, all of them were negative for CDH-1 germline mutation. The glands proliferated and expanded, and then morphologically transformed into signet-ring cells and formed clonal hyperplastic SRCC, which expanded laterally along the gastric foveolar cells to a length of 3-6 mm. Periodic acid Schiff staining was positive, while CK7 and MUC6 were negative, in all cases. Ki-67-positive cells ranged 37%-60%. During a follow-up period of 6-30 months, no patients experienced tumor recurrence or metastasis.SRCC derived from gastric foveolar epithelium is originated from the proliferative region of the bottom of the gastric pit and gland neck. It is easily missed diagnosed or misdiagnosed as it grows laterally along the gastric foveolar cells. Biological behavior, genetics, and etiology of such SRCC, as well as the clinicopathological characteristics, need to be further studied.

Extreme cold events exert enormous impacts on the ecosystems and human health. A quantitative attribution analysis of the surface temperature anomalies associated with extreme cold events in China is conducted using an updated version of the coupled atmosphere-surface climate feedback response analysis method. For both extreme warm and cold years, the effects of anomalous surface albedo, water vapor, atmospheric dynamics, and aerosols are the major positive contributors, and the processes associated with surface dynamics provide a major negative effect. Specifically, the effect of surface albedo (water vapor) is directly linked to the change in local snow cover (precipitable water) over China. More local snow cover (precipitable water) provides a cooling (warming) effect and vice versa. The process associated with atmospheric dynamics exhibits an asymmetric contribution for the extreme warm and cold years. It provides a warming effect over most of China in the extreme warm years, which is possibly related to the nation-wide warm air advection. On the other hand, the effect of atmospheric dynamics displays large regional and year-to-year variations for the cold cases. In addition, a considerable impact of anthropogenic aerosols is detected over central-southern China, which is possibly related to the emission reduction policies in China since 2013. Although clouds show only a moderate impact on the national-averaged temperature anomalies, they provide a considerable effect over southern China.

Background Aseptic loosening is a leading cause of revision following total hip and knee arthroplasty which is caused by chronic inflammation around the prosthesis. Diabetes mellitus causes systemic inflammatory changes which could increase the risk of aseptic loosening. This study investigated the association between diabetes mellitus and aseptic loosening around hip and knee arthroplasty. Methods A case-control study was conducted at a single arthroplasty centre over the seven-year period of January 2015 to December 2021. Cases were defined as any adult patient undergoing revision hip or knee arthroplasty for aseptic loosening. Controls were randomly selected patients undergoing primary total hip or knee arthroplasty during the same period at a 1:4 ratio. Risk factors were compared between the two groups. Results A total of 440 patients were included in our study – 88 in the aseptic loosening group and 352 patients in the control group. The odds of having diabetes mellitus in the aseptic loosening group was 2.78 (95%CI 1.31–5.92, P = 0.01). Other risk factors were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions The incidence of diabetes mellitus is significantly greater in patients undergoing revision arthroplasty for aseptic loosening. Further research is required to explore whether this association is indeed causative.

Background Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease that is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution patterns and potential influencing factors of TB incidence risk, and to provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of TB. Methods We collected reported cases of TB in 38 districts and counties in Chongqing from 2014 to 2020 and data on environment, population characteristics and economic factors during the same period. By constructing a Bayesian spatio-temporal model, we explored the spatio-temporal distribution pattern of TB incidence risk and potential influencing factors, identified key areas and key populations affected by TB, compared the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of TB in populations with different characteristics, and explored the differences in the influence of various social and environmental factors. Results The high-risk areas for TB incidence in Chongqing from 2014 to 2020 were mainly concentrated in southeastern and northeastern regions of Chongqing, and the overall relative risk (RR) of TB showed a decreasing trend during the study period, while RR of TB in main urban area and southeast of Chongqing showed an increasing trend. The RR of TB was relatively high in the main urban area for the female population and the population aged 0–29 years, and the RR of TB for the population aged 30–44 years in the main urban area and the population aged 60 years or older in southeast of Chongqing had an increasing trend, respectively. For each 1 μg/m3 increase in SO2 and 1% increase in the number of low-income per 1000 non-agricultural households (LINA per 1000 persons), the RR of TB increased by 0.35% (95% CI: 0.08–0.61%) and 0.07% (95% CI: 0.05–0.10%), respectively. And LINA per 1000 persons had the greatest impact on the female population and the over 60 years old age group. Although each 1% increase in urbanization rate (UR) was associated with 0.15% (95% CI: 0.11–0.17%) reduction in the RR of TB in the whole population, the RR increased by 0.18% (95% CI: 0.16–0.21%) in the female population and 0.37% (95% CI: 0.34–0.45%) in the 0–29 age group. Conclusion This study showed that high-risk areas for TB were concentrated in the southeastern and northeastern regions of Chongqing, and that the elderly population was a key population for TB incidence. There were spatial and temporal differences in the incidence of TB in populations with different characteristics, and various socio-environmental factors had different effects on different populations. Local governments should focus on areas and populations at high risk of TB and develop targeted prevention interventions based on the characteristics of different populations.
