Silk fibers, composed of sericin and fibroin, are spun by the silkworm bombyx mori. Fibroin and sericin account for about 75 wt%and 25 wt% of the raw silk, respectively. Sericin is the natural cement to hold the fibroin fibers together during cocoon production. Theconventional method of sericin removal is degumming with Marseille soap at alkaline pH, which leads to generation of high strengthwastewaters. In this study, extraction of sericin from silk fibers was performed with alternative methods, i.e., degumming at hightemperature-high pressure and enzymatic degumming under different process conditions. The results were compared with conventionalmethod in terms of fiber whiteness, brightness, weight loss, breaking strength and elongation. The conventional process, enzymaticprocess with 8% savinase and 1100 C in the high temperature process results were comparable, which indicated that alternative methodscan be used for degumming of sericin., Serisin ve fibroinden oluşarak kompozit bir yapı oluşturan ipek lifleri Bombyx Mori türü ipek böceği tarafından eğrilmektedir.Fibroin ve fibroini bir arada tutan doğal çimento olan serisin ham ipeğin ağırlıkça sırasıyla % 75 ve % 25’ ini oluşturur. Bu çalışmada ipek lifinden serisin uzaklaştırma işlemiyüksek sıcaklık-yüksek basınç ve enzimatik yöntemlerle farklı proses şartları altında yapılmıştır. Sonuçlar konvansiyonel proses ilebeyazlık, parlaklık, ağırlık kaybı, kopma mukavameti ve uzaması bakımından karşılaştırılmıştır. Konvansiyonel, % 8 savinaz enzimi ileyapılan enzimatik ve 1100 C’ de yüksek sıcaklık yöntemleriyle elde edilen sonuçlar birbirlerine benzerdir. Bu sonuçlar, serisin sökmedealternatif yöntemlerin kullanılabileceğini göstermektedir.

The equi-viscous temperature range of asphalt has long been used in establishing the mixing temperature for mix designs and field production of hot mix asphalt (HMA). However, this method considers only binder viscosity to determine the mixing temperatures of the aggregate and asphalt. It is well known that depending on the gradation of aggregate and the type of plant and the mixing time. The appropriate mixing temperature for the proper coating may be lower than that of the viscosity based method. The excessive temperature causes the possible performance problems related to the hardening of the asphalt binder and increases the energy consumption, the gas emissions and fumes. In this study, a new method for the determination of asphalt-aggregate mixing temperature which considers the mixture properties was introduced to asphalt industry. The mixing temperatures of different nine mixtures were determined by both conventional and the proposed method. The effects of the nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS), crushed coarse aggregate ratio (CCAR), the type of gradation, and the grade of binder on the mixing temperature were evaluated with an experimental study. Results show that decreasing NMAS, CCAR and increasing the grade of binder decreased the mixing temperature which is needed for proper coating. In addition, results showed that as going away from restricted zone of the Superpave gradation, the needed temperature to coat the aggregates decreased. The proposed method resulted in lower temperatures comparing to the conventional method on an average of 13°C. This means a possible energy saving of 14.3 x 10 9 kcal or 1362000 kg of crude oil in a year in Turkey. As a result, the new method is recommended due to not only the saving in energy but also decreasing the gas emissions and fume, and possible performance benefits. © Sila Science.

W UMa türü bir yıldız olan DN Boo' nun Johnson UBV süzgeçlerindeki ışık eğrileri Ege Üniversitesi Gözlemevi' nde 35 cm'lik çatal kurgu teleskop kullanılarak Şubat-Mart 2005 tarihlerinde elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen ışık eğrileri aynı yıldıza ait Hipparcos uydusunun elde ettiği ışık eğrisi ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Bu yıldızın ışık eğrilerinden yıldızın tutulma gösteren öreten bir çift sistem olduğu, Hipparcos' un vermiş olduğu ışık eğrisi ile elde edilen ışık eğrilerinin tamamen farklılık gösterdiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Patients diagnosis as penil fracture and treated with surgical methods were evaluated retrospectively between January 1990-February 2002.Patients were evaluated by age, trauma type, time passed after the trauma, physical examination and radiologic data.The cause of trauma was blunt trauma in all patients. 14 trauma (60.8%) were during sexual activity, 6 trauma (26%) were during handling the erective penis in morning erection, 3 of trauma (13%) were due to the rolling on to the penis. Urethral bleeding was seen in 1 patient and microscopic hematuria was detected in 5 patients. Subcoronal circular incision was carried out in 16 patients (69.5%), semicircular incision was done directly on the injury in 6 patients (26%) and from penis radix to scrotum was done in 1 patient (4.3%). There was unilateral corpus cavernosum injury in 21 patients. Bilateral corpus cavernosum injury in 1 patient, corpuscavernosum, corpus spongiosum and incomplent urethral injury in 1 patient. Wound infection was detected only in 2 patients at postoperatively early period. After evaluating 20 patients with medical history and physical examination in postoperative control penil curvature permitting sexual activity was detected in 3 patients.We concluded that patients with penil fracture may be treated with low complication rate by early surgical procedure.

This study evaluated the effect of a) pontic materials and b) occlusal morphologies on the fracture resistance of fi ber-reinforced composite (FRC) inlay-retained fixed dental prostheses (FDP). Inlay-retained FRC FPDs (N=45, n=9) were constructed using a) resin composite (deep anatomy), b) natural tooth, c) acrylic denture tooth, d) porcelain denture tooth and e) resin composite (shallow anatomy), as pontic materials. In addition resin composite beams were fabricated (N=30, n=10): i) 'circular', ii) 'elliptic I', and iii) 'elliptic II'. We aimed to determine the frequency of five tumor suppressor (TS) genes in prostate cancer and the correlation between promoter hypermethylation of these genes and low and high grade of prostate carcinomas. A total of 30 prostate tumor specimens were investigated for promoter methylation status of TS hypermethylated in cancer 1 (HIC1), death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1), secreted frizzled-related protein 2 (SFRP2), cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (p16), and O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) genes by using bisulfite modifying method. A high frequency of promoter hypermethylation was found in HIC1 (70.9%), SFRP2 (58.3%), and DAPK1 (33.3%) genes in tumor samples that were examined. The current data show high frequency of hypermethylation changes in HIC1, SFRP2, and DAPK1 genes in prostate carcinomas of high Gleason Score (GS).

SUMMARY This clinical report describes a repair protocol for cusp fracture of a failed amalgam-dentin complex. A maxillary right first premolar with an amalgam restoration presented a buccal cusp fracture. Chairside repair has been undertaken by conditioning the existing amalgam restoration with silica coating (30 μm CoJet®-Sand), phosphoric acid etching the beveled enamel surface, priming dentin, and application of a bonding agent on both enamel and dentin. Thereafter, the amalgam was silanized (ESPE®-Sil), and opaque resin was applied and polymerized to mask the amalgam. The fractured buccal cusp was modeled using resin composite (Clearfil Photo Posterior) and photo-polymerized. Finally, the amalgam was refinished and refurbished and the composite was finished and polished.
