Experiment details and full pulse characterizations at GDD=0.704 and 0.112 ps2

In an effort to realize a compact and integrated ultrafast fiber laser system, we propose a fiber component serving as a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM), output coupler (OC), and mode-locker by a magnetron-sputtering saturable absorber (SA) on a laboratory-tapered coupler. With the function-integrated coupler, an Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser with 112 MHz repetition rate, 286 fs pulse width, and 87 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is demonstrated. The noise feature of the mode-locked laser is also characterized. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a mode-locked fiber laser based on a WDM/OC/SA integrated device.

We report, for the first time, the nonlinear absorption at the 2 µm waveband of three Sb-related materials including two Sb compounds, GaSb and InSb, and one Sb alloy, Ge8Sb92. These saturable absorbers (SAs) were coated on tapered single mode fibers by the magnetron-sputtering deposition method. By incorporating these SAs into Tm-doped fiber lasers, ultrafast mode-locked solitons could be readily obtained. Stable pulse trains with 922 fs/753 fs/1005 fs pulse durations, 31.35 mW/37.70 mW/16.60 mW output powers, 93 dB/80 dB/92 dB signal-to-noise ratios were achieved with GaSb/InSb/Ge8Sb92, respectively. Our findings demonstrate that these materials can be widely used for photonic devices in the 2 µm waveband where ultrafast optical switching and modulating are desired.

We demonstrate a bismuth (Bi) saturable absorber (SA) for generating ultrafast pulse. The Bi SA is fabricated by the Bi film deposited on the surface of microfibers through using magnetron sputtering. Its nonlinear optical properties are investigated. The as-prepared Bi SA has outstanding nonlinear absorption property demonstrated by the open aperture (OA) Z-scan system at 1500 nm and balanced twin-detector method at 1560 nm. The nonlinear optical property of Bi SA shows that the modulation depth, the nonsaturable losses, and the saturable intensity at 1.5 μm are 14% and 79%, and 0.9 MW/cm2, respectively. Besides, the closed aperture (CA) Z-scan measurement is also implemented to estimate the nonlinear refractive index of Bi film. The Bi film shows that the typical CA/OA curve possesses the feature of peak-valley profile, meaning that the sample with a negative nonlinear refractive index is self-defocusing. In our experiments, the parameters of the nonlinear absorption coefficient β and the nonlinear refractive index n2 are estimated at about 2.38 × 10–4 cm/W and –1.47 × 10–9 cm2/W according to the actual experimental data points, respectively. To further investigate its nonlinear optical property, the microfiber-based Bi SA is embedded into an erbium-doped fiber laser with a typical ring cavity structure. Based on the Bi SA device, the stable ultrafast pulses are generated at 1.5 μm with the pulse width of 357 fs, the output power of 45.4 mW, corresponding to the pulse energy of 2.39 nJ, and the signal-to-noise ratio is 84 dB. The stable soliton pulses emitting at 1563 nm are obtained with a 3-dB and 6-nm spectral bandwidth. The experimental results suggest that the microfiber-based Bi SA prepared by magnetron sputtering deposition (MSD) technique can be used as an excellent photonic device for ultrafast pulse generation in the 1.5 μm regime, and the MSD technique opens a promising way to produce high-performance SA with a large modulation depth, low saturable intensity, and high power tolerance, which are conducible to the generation of high power and ultrafast pulse with high stability.

Multi-pulse dynamic patterns have been experimentally observed in an Ytterbium-doped fiber laser passively mode locked by a topological insulator (TI) Bi 2 Te 3 saturable absorber (SA). The fundamental mode-locking operation with a repetition rate of ~1.10 MHz was achieved under a pump power of ~160 mW with an appropriate setting of the polarization controller (PC). It was found that through either changing the pump power or rotating the orientation of intra-cavity PC, several characteristic modes have been experimentally observed, including disordered multi-pulses, bunch of pulses, and soliton rains. Simultaneously, quasi-square pulses have also been observed in the laser cavity. Our systematic study clearly demonstrated that TI could be developed as an effective SA for the generation of different pulse operation states in a passively mode-locked all-normal-dispersion Ytterbium-doped fiber laser.

We give a systematic experimental study of multipulse bunches in a graphene oxide saturable absorber (GOSA) passively mode-locked all-normal dispersion ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL). Some special phenomena such as harmonic multipulse bunches, harmonic mode-locking, and chaotic multipulse states are also obtained. Our experiment reveals that the inserted 2.5-nm narrow bandwidth filter plays an important role in the formation of multipulse in all-normal dispersion fiber lasers. Because of the effective gain bandwidth depends on both the 2.5-nm narrow bandwidth filter and the artificial fiber birefringence filter, the multipulse operation states are sensitive to the polarization. It is the first demonstration of multipulse evolution in a GOSA passively mode-locked all-normal dispersion YDFL.

The influence of Bragg fiber design parameters on photonic bandgap was discussed via the finite element method.The theoretical results show that the bandgap move to long wavelength when the thickness or the refractive index of the Ge-doped layers increases.A novel W-shape-core Bragg fiber was firstly proposed by introducing a F-doped low index layer adjacent of fiber core.The calculation demonstrates the W-shape-core Bragg fiber can reduce the confinement loss and improve the bending-resistant ability effectively.A W-shape-core Bragg fiber was designed with a core diameter of 30 μm,which has a loss of 0.1 dB/km at wavelength of 1.06 μm and is proved single mode propagation theoretically.

We report a thulium-doped silica fibre laser that generates a maximum cw output power of 6W in a 2μm wavelength range when cladding-pumped by a laser diode (LD) operating at approximately 791 nm at room temperature. The slope efficiency with respect to the launched pump power is 50% and 38.4%, with and without an output coupler mirror, respectively. The corresponding thresholds are 2.8 W and 4.8 W, respectively. The beam qualities Mx2 and My2 are 1.26 and 1.32, respectively. The experimental results are also analysed.

A cw Raman laser based on a 100-m photonic crystal fibre is demonstrated with up to 3.8 W output power at the incident pump power of 12 W, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of about 31.6%. The second order Stokes light, which is firstly reported in a cw photonic crystal fibre Raman laser, is obtained at 1183 nm with an output power of 1.6 W and a slope efficiency of about 45.7%.

The different multiple pulse phenomena are experimentally studied in a passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser based on graphene-oxide saturable absorber (GOSA) with net normal dispersion cavity. At the same pump power with different polarization orientations, we observe the multiple pulse phenomena, including harmonic mode-locking of rectangular pulses, dissipative solitons, quasi-harmonic mode-locking, periodical peak modulation, multipulse bunches, multipulse cluster, and chaotic multipulse. The inserted 2 nm narrow bandwidth filter is important for limiting the gain bandwidth and shaping pulses. Adjusting the polarization controller is equivalent to changing the gain in the laser cavity, which is the main reason for the formation of different multiple pulses states. This is the first time that different multiple pulses states have been observed in an-normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser with graphene-oxide saturable absorber. These results could extend the understanding of multiple pulse dynamics in GOSA mode-locked fiber lasers.

We investigate a photonic crystal fibre Raman laser using fibre Bragg grating pairs as cavity mirrors. The threshold pump power is up to 0.65 W by decreasing the cavity loss and using a photonic crystal fibre with high Raman gain coefficient. A maximum continuous-wave output power of 2.7 W is obtained at the maximum incident pump power of 5.6 W. The corresponding optical conversion efficiency and the slope efficiency are about 48% and 56%, respectively.

We investigate on a multi-wavelength operation erbium-doped fiber laser Q-switched by a graphene-based saturable absorber. Stable pulses were generated with the widths from 6.9 to 1.5 μs, energies from 40.4 to 130.2 nJ and repetition rates from 68.32 to 132.9 kHz, when the pump power increased from 142.32 to 441.86 mW. A fiber Bragg grating with five reflective peaks was inserted into the fiber ring through an optical circulator, resulting in a stable output of five- lasing-wavelength output. The laser can perform as a low-cost and easy-built all fiber light source, and has potential applications in the fields where pulses at multi-wavelength operation are needed, i.e., temperature or strain fiber sensors. © 2012 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers

A 145-m long microstructured optical fiber taper was fabricated on the industry drawing tower. The fiber taper had good uniformity of structure as the outer diameter decreased from 110 to 80 μm. Its optical attenuation was measured 52 dB/km at 1060 nm, and the zero dispersion wavelengths along the slow axis were calculated decreasing from 1000 to 915 nm. Watt-level supercontinuum spanning from 430 to 2050 nm was obtained as the fiber taper pumped by a 1064 nm picosecond laser source. The nonlinear mechanism of spectral broadening is carefully investigated with the support of numerical simulations.

We demonstrate the generation of supercontinuum spectra in three secondary cores of a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber pumped by femtosecond laser pulses, respectively. The supercontinuum spectra are mainly a result of the soliton self-frequency shift and an amplification of dispersive wave at visible wavelengths. Detailed mode simulations show that with the increasing core length, the modes transfer from "double-points" to "single-point" since the pump laser is more easily coupled into the two side cores of a secondary core when the core length is small. The simulation results also explain why the experimental observed far-field beam patterns of first two secondary cores are different.
