background: Glioblastoma Multiform (GBM) is the primary malignancy with the highest incidence and worst prognosis in the adult CNS. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a novel and widely diverse class of endogenous non-coding RNAs that can promote or inhibit gliomagenesis. Our study aimed to explore the role of circASPM in GBM and its molecular mechanism.Methods: Levels of circASPM, miR-130b-3p and E2F1 were determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) or western blotting assay. MTS, Edu, neurospheres formation and extreme limiting dilution assays were used to detect the tumorigenesis and proliferation of GSCs in vitro. The interactions between miR-130b-3p and circASPM or E2F1 was demonstrated via qPCR, western blotting, dual-luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays. Xenograft experiments was used to analyze tumor growth in vivo.Results: CircASPM was overexpressed in GBM and could promote the tumorigenesis and proliferation of GSCs both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, circASPM up-regulated the expression of E2F1 in GSCs via miR-130b-3p sponging. We furtherly demonstrated that circAPSM could promote the GSCs proliferation via E2F1 up-regulating. Therefore, our study identified a novel circRNA and its possible mechanism in the development and tumorigenesis of GBM.Conclusions: CircASPM can promote GBM progression via regulating miR-130b-3p/E2F1 axis, suggesting that circAPSM could provide an effective biomarker for GBM diagnosis and prognostic evaluation and possibly being used for molecular targeted therapy.

Preoperative serum CA19-9 and histology grade could show the biological characteristics of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). This study aims to explore the combined effect of preoperative CA19-9 and histology grade on the prognosis of patients with PDAC. A total of 612 patients with PDAC undergoing curative pancreatectomy were retrospectively enrolled. 360 (58.8%) patients had preoperative CA19-9 > 112 U/ml and 348 (56.9%) patients had high histology grade. A biological risk model was established based on preoperative CA19-9 and histology grade. Prognostic analysis showed that biological risk based on preoperative CA19-9 and histology grade was independently associated with survival of PDAC patients. Then the biological risk was incorporated into the eighth edition of the TNM staging system and a modified TNM (mTNM) staging system was developed. The ROC curves showed that the area under curve(AUC) of the mTNM staging system was significantly greater than that of the TNM staging system. Biological risk based on preoperative CA19-9 and histology grade was an independent prognostic factor for patients with PDAC. Incorporating the biological risk into the TNM staging system could improve the the accuracy of the TNM staging system in predicting prognosis of patients with PDAC.

The Belt and Road initiative is one of the most important parts of China’s overseas business strategy. The African region is also included in the Belt and Road initiative. This paper aims to study the important position of Africa in the Belt and Road strategy through the economic cooperation and project construction between China and Africa under the framework of the Belt and Road. China-Africa cooperation has a long history. Africa has many limitations in infrastructure but rich in natural resources. China’s strong manufacturing system can both make full use of natural resources from Africa and invest in African infrastructure. In recent years, China-Africa cooperation has been deepening and expanding in scale. The Belt and Road Initiative has brought win-win results to China and Africa. As China consumes excess capacity and realizes the goal of Chinese manufacturing going global, African countries have achieved economic development, improved infrastructure construction and stride toward industrialization.

Low-cost inertial measurement units (IMUs) based on microelectromechanical system (MEMS) have been widely used in self-localization for autonomous robots due to their small size and low power consumption. However, the low-cost MEMS IMUs often suffer from complex, non-linear, time-varying noise and errors. In order to improve the low-cost MEMS IMU gyroscope performance, a data-driven denoising method is proposed in this paper to reduce stochastic errors. Specifically, an attention-based learning architecture of convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) is employed to extract the local features and learn the temporal correlation from the MEMS IMU gyroscope raw signals. The attention mechanism is appropriately designed to distinguish the importance of the features at different times by automatically assigning different weights. Numerical real field, datasets and ablation experiments are performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Compared to the raw gyroscope data, the experimental results demonstrate that the average errors of bias instability and angle random walk are reduced by 57.1 and 66.7%.

Competition among exchange interactions is able to induce novel spin correlations on a bipartite lattice without geometrical frustration. A prototype example is the spiral spin liquid, which is a correlated paramagnetic state characterized by sub-dimensional degenerate propagation vectors. Here, using spectral graph theory, we show that spiral spin liquids on a bipartite lattice can be approximated by a further-neighbor model on the corresponding line-graph lattice that is non-bipartite, thus broadening the space of candidate materials that may support the spiral spin liquid phases. As illustrations, we examine neutron scattering experiments performed on two spinel compounds, ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ and CuInCr$_4$Se$_8$, to demonstrate the feasibility of this new approach and expose its possible limitations in experimental realizations., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures

We report results of low-temperature heat capacity, magnetocaloric effect and neutron diffraction measurements of TmVO$_{4}$, an insulator that undergoes a continuous ferroquadrupolar phase transition associated with local partially-filled $4f$ orbitals of the thulium (Tm$^{3+}$) ions. The ferroquadrupolar transition, a realization of Ising nematicity, can be tuned to a quantum critical point using a magnetic field oriented along the $c$-axis of the tetragonal crystal lattice, which acts as an effective transverse field for the Ising-nematic order. In small magnetic fields, the thermal phase transition can be well-described using a semi-classical mean field treatment of the transverse field Ising model. However, in higher magnetic fields, closer to the field-tuned quantum phase transition, subtle deviations from this semi-classical behavior are observed due to quantum fluctuations. Although the phase transition is driven by the local $4f$ degrees of freedom, the crystal lattice still plays a crucial role, both in terms of mediating the interactions between the local quadrupoles, and in determining the critical scaling exponents, even though the phase transition itself can be described via mean field. In particular, bilinear coupling of the nematic order parameter to acoustic phonons changes the spatial and temporal fluctuations of the former in a fundamental way, resulting in different critical behavior of the nematic transverse-field Ising model as compared to the usual case of the magnetic transverse-field Ising model. We report results of low-temperature heat-capacity, magnetocaloric-effect, and neutron-diffraction measurements of TmVO

Multiferroic oxide heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric components hold the promise for nonvolatile magnetic control via ferroelectric polarization, advantageous for the low-dissipation spintronics. Modern understanding of the magnetoelectric coupling in these systems involves structural, orbital, and magnetic reconstructions at interfaces. Previous works have long proposed polarization-dependent interfacial magnetic structures; however, direct evidence is still missing, which requires advanced characterization tools with near-atomic-scale spatial resolutions. Here, extensive polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) studies have determined the magnetic depth profiles of PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (PZT/LSMO) bilayers with opposite self-polarizations. When the LSMO is 2-3 nm thick, the bilayers show two magnetic transitions on cooling. However, temperature-dependent magnetization is different below the lower-temperature transition for opposite polarizations. PNR finds that the LSMO splits into two magnetic sublayers, but the inter-sublayer magnetic couplings are of opposite signs for the two polarizations. Near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy further shows contrasts in both the Mn valences and the Mn-O bond anisotropy between the two polarizations. This work completes the puzzle for the magnetoelectric coupling model at the PZT/LSMO interface, showing a synergic interplay among multiple degrees of freedom toward emergent functionalities at complex oxide interfaces.

Spiral spin-liquids are correlated paramagnetic states with degenerate propagation vectors forming a continuous ring or surface in reciprocal space. On the honeycomb lattice, spiral spin-liquids present a novel route to realize emergent fracton excitations, quantum spin liquids, and topological spin textures, yet experimental realizations remain elusive. Here, using neutron scattering, we show that a spiral spin-liquid is realized in the van der Waals honeycomb magnet FeCl$_3$. A continuous ring of scattering is directly observed, which indicates the emergence of an approximate U(1) symmetry in momentum space. Our work demonstrates that spiral spin-liquids can be achieved in two-dimensional systems and provides a promising platform to study the fracton physics in spiral spin-liquids., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

Neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy are employed to investigate the magnetism and spin structure in single-phase B20 Co1.043Si0.957. The magnetic contributions to the NPD data measured in zero fields are consistent with the helical order among the allowed spin structures derived from group theory. The magnitude of the magnetic moment is (0.3 ± 0.1)μB/Co according to NPD, while the surface magnetization probed by XMCD at 3 kOe is (0.18–0.31)μB/Co. Both values are substantially larger than the bulk magnetization of 0.11μB/Co determined from magnetometry at 70 kOe and 2 K. These experimental data indicate the formation of a helical spin phase and the associated conical states in high magnetic fields.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) infect insects and reproduce within the host cadaver. The nematodes use chemotaxis to assist in host-finding. However, the chemotaxis of nematode species in response to insects previously infected by con- and hetero-specific EPN in a sand context has rarely been reported. ObjectiveTo explore the role of neuroendoscope assistance during surgical resection of the intracanalicular portion of vestibular schwannomas via the retrosigmoid approach and the subsequent early facial nerve outcomes.MethodsPatients of vestibular schwannoma with intracanalicular extensions undergoing retrosigmoid dissection at a single institution were retrospectively analyzed in this study. Several surgical techniques were applied to ensure maximal and safe removal of tumors. Tumors extending less than 10 mm into the internal acoustic canal (IAC) were classified as Grade A, while those extending over 10 mm into IAC were taken as Grade B. Neuroendoscope was applied at the end of microscopic phase to search for potential remnants for Grade B tumors. Absolute tumor extension was defined and measured. House and Brackmann (HB) scale was used to evaluate immediate CN VII outcomes.ResultsOf the 61 patients, there were 38 females and 23 males. A total of 18 (29.51%) cases were Koos Grade II, 12 (19.67%) cases Koos Grade III, and 31 (50.82%) cases Koos Grade IV. There were 38 cases (62.30%) of Grade A and 23 cases (37.70%) of Grade B. Gross total resection was achieved in 60 cases (98.36%). Four cases of intracanalicular remnants were detected and completely removed under endoscopic visualizations. There was a significantly higher proportion (17%, p = 0.02) of intracanalicular remnants in Grade B than Grade A. CN VII and VIII were anatomically preserved in all cases. A total of 55 cases (90.16%) retained good (HB Grades 1 and 2) facial nerve outcomes.ConclusionsIn Grade B vestibular schwannomas, after maximal microsurgical removal, endoscopic evaluation of the intracanalicular portion revealed residual tumors in 17% of the patients. Hence endoscopic evaluation of the potential intracanalicular remnants for tumor extending over 10 mm within IAC (Grade B) is recommended.

The choice of females to accept or reject male courtship is a critical decision for animal reproduction. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) has been found to regulate sexual behavior in many species, but it is unclear how 5-HT and its receptors function to regulate different aspects of sexual behavior. Here we used Drosophila melanogaster as the model animal to investigate how 5-HT and its receptors modulate female sexual receptivity. We found that knockout of tryptophan hydroxylase (Trh), which is involved in the biosynthesis of 5-HT, severely reduced virgin female receptivity without affecting post-mating behaviors. We identified a subset of sexually dimorphic Trh neurons that co-expressed fruitless (fru), in which the activity was correlated with sexual receptivity in females. We also found that 5-HT1A and 5-HT7 receptors regulate virgin female receptivity. Our findings demonstrate how 5-HT functions in sexually dimorphic neurons to promote virgin female receptivity through two of its receptors.

Video deraining is an important issue for outdoor vision systems and has been investigated extensively. However, designing optimal architectures by the aggregating model formation and data distribution is a challenging task for video deraining. In this paper, we develop a model-guided triple-level optimization framework to deduce network architecture with cooperating optimization and auto-searching mechanism, named Triple-level Model Inferred Cooperating Searching (TMICS), for dealing with various video rain circumstances. In particular, to mitigate the problem that existing methods cannot cover various rain streaks distribution, we first design a hyper-parameter optimization model about task variable and hyper-parameter. Based on the proposed optimization model, we design a collaborative structure for video deraining. This structure includes Dominant Network Architecture (DNA) and Companionate Network Architecture (CNA) that is cooperated by introducing an Attention-based Averaging Scheme (AAS). To better explore inter-frame information from videos, we introduce a macroscopic structure searching scheme that searches from Optical Flow Module (OFM) and Temporal Grouping Module (TGM) to help restore latent frame. In addition, we apply the differentiable neural architecture searching from a compact candidate set of task-specific operations to discover desirable rain streaks removal architectures automatically. Extensive experiments on various datasets demonstrate that our model shows significant improvements in fidelity and temporal consistency over the state-of-the-art works. High-grade glioma is one of the most lethal human cancers characterized by extensive tumor heterogeneity. In order to identify cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive tumor heterogeneity of this lethal disease, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing analysis of one high-grade glioma. Accordingly, we analyzed the individual cellular components in the ecosystem of this tumor. We found that tumor-associated macrophages are predominant in the immune microenvironment. Furthermore, we identified five distinct subpopulations of tumor cells, including one cycling, two OPC/NPC-like and two MES-like cell subpopulations. Moreover, we revealed the evolutionary transition from the cycling to OPC/NPC-like and MES-like cells by trajectory analysis. Importantly, we found that SPP1/CD44 interaction plays a critical role in macrophage-mediated activation of MES-like cells by exploring the cell-cell communication among all cellular components in the tumor ecosystem. Finally, we showed that high expression levels of both SPP1 and CD44 correlate with an increased infiltration of macrophages and poor prognosis of glioma patients. Taken together, this study provided a single-cell atlas of one high-grade glioma and revealed a critical role of macrophage-mediated SPP1/CD44 signaling in glioma progression, indicating that the SPP1/CD44 axis is a potential target for glioma treatment.

Swedenborgite Ca${}_{0.5}$Y${}_{0.5}$BaCo${}_{4}$O${}_{7}$, with geometrically frustrated kagome and triangular lattices, exhibits a disordered ground state in spite of strong antiferromagnetic coupling between the Co spins. Here, the authors perform single-crystal diffuse neutron scattering experiments to fully characterize the short-range spin correlations in this compound and determine that long-range incommensurate spin correlations are suppressed by exchange disorder. This result reveals a general correspondence between unequal interactions and incommensurate spin correlations on the swedenborgite lattice.

M-STAR is a next generation polarized neutron reflectometer with advanced capabilities. A new focusing guide concept is optimized for samples with dimensions down to a millimeter range. A proposed hybrid pulse-skipping chopper will enable experiments at constant geometry at one incident angle in a broad range of wavevector transfer Q up to 0.3 A−1 for specular, off-specular, and GISANS measurements. M-STAR will empower nanoscience and spintronics studies routinely on small samples (∼2 × 2 mm2) and of atomic-scale thickness using versatile experimental conditions of magnetic and/or electric fields, light, and temperature applied in situ to novel complex device-like nanosystems with multiple buried interfaces. M-STAR will enable improved grazing incidence diffraction measurements, as a surface-sensitive depth-resolved probe of, e.g., the out-of-plane component of atomic magnetic moments in ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and more complex structures as well as in-plane atomic-scale structures inaccessible with contemporary diffractometry and reflectometry. New horizons will be opened by the development of an option to probe near-surface dynamics with inelastic grazing incidence scattering in the time-of-flight mode. These novel options in combination with ideally matched parameters of the second target station will place M-STAR in the world’s leading position for high resolution polarized reflectometry.

Motivated by the variation in reported lattice parameters of floating-zone-grown ${\mathrm{Nd}}_{2}{\mathrm{Zr}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$ crystals, we have performed a detailed study of the relationship between synthesis environment, structural disorder, and magnetic properties. Using a combination of polycrystalline standards, electron-probe microanalysis, and scattering techniques, we show that crystals grown under atmospheric conditions have a reduced lattice parameter relative to pristine polycrystalline powders due to occupation of the Nd site by excess Zr (i.e., negative stuffing). In contrast, crystals grown under high-pressure Ar are nearly stoichiometric with an average lattice parameter approaching the polycrystalline value. While minimal disorder of the oxygen sublattices is observed on the scale of the average structure, neutron pair-distribution function analysis indicates a highly local disorder of the oxygen coordination, which is only weakly dependent on growth environment. Most importantly, our magnetization, heat capacity, and single-crystal neutron scattering data show that the magnetic properties of crystals grown under high-pressure Ar match closely with those of stoichiometric powders. Neutron scattering measurements reveal that the signature of magnetic moment fragmentation---the coexistence of all-in-all-out (AIAO) magnetic Bragg peaks and diffuse pinch-point scattering due to spin-ice correlations--persists in these nearly stoichiometric crystals. However, in addition to an increased AIAO transition temperature, the diffuse signal is seemingly stabilized and remains nearly unchanged upon warming to 800 mK. This behavior indicates that both the AIAO magnetic order and spin-ice correlations are sensitive to deviations of the Nd stoichiometry.

Meta-learning (a.k.a. learning to learn) has recently emerged as a promising paradigm for a variety of applications. There are now many meta-learning methods, each focusing on different modeling aspects of base and meta learners, but all can be (re)formulated as specific bilevel optimization problems. This work presents BOML, a modularized optimization library that unifies several meta-learning algorithms into a common bilevel optimization framework. It provides a hierarchical optimization pipeline together with a variety of iteration modules, which can be used to solve the mainstream categories of meta-learning methods, such as meta-feature-based and meta-initialization-based formulations. Two-dimensional materials with intrinsic functionality are becoming increasingly important in exploring fundamental condensed matter science and for developing advanced technologies. Bulk crystals that can be exfoliated are particularly relevant to these pursuits as they provide the opportunity to study the role of physical dimensionality and explore device physics in highly crystalline samples and designer heterostructures in a routine manner. Magnetism is a key element in these endeavors; however, relatively few cleavable materials are magnetic and none possess magnetic order at ambient conditions. Here, we introduce Fe5- xGeTe2 as a cleavable material with ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature. We established intrinsic magnetic order at room temperature in bulk crystals ([Formula: see text] = 310 K) through magnetization measurements and in exfoliated, thin flakes ([Formula: see text] ≈ 280 K) using the anomalous Hall effect. Our work reveals Fe5GeTe2 as a prime candidate for incorporating intrinsic magnetism into functional van der Waals heterostructures and devices near room temperature.

PIONEER is a high Q-resolution, single-crystal, polarized neutron diffractometer at the Second Target Station (STS), Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It will provide the unprecedented capability of measuring tiny crystals (0.001 mm3, i.e., x-ray diffraction size), ultra-thin films (10 nm thickness), and weak structural and magnetic transitions. PIONEER benefits from the increased peak brightness of STS cold-neutron sources and uses advanced Montel mirrors that are able to deliver a focused beam with a high brilliance transfer, a homogeneous profile, and a low background. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the optimized instrument has a high theoretical peak brilliance of 2.9 × 1012 n cm−2 sr−1 Å−1 s−1 at 2.5 Å at the sample position, within a 5 × 5 mm2 region and a ±0.3° divergence range. The moderator-to-sample distance is 60 m, providing a nominal wavelength band of 4.3 Å with a wavelength resolution better than 0.2% in the wavelength range of 1.0–6.0 Å. PIONEER is capable of characterizing large-scale periodic structures up to 200 Å. With a sample-to-detector distance of 0.8 m, PIONEER accommodates various sample environments, including low/high temperature, high pressure, and high magnetic/electric field. A large cylindrical detector array (4.0 sr) with a radial collimator is planned to suppress the background scattering from sample environments. Bottom detector banks provide an additional 0.4 sr coverage or can be removed if needed to accommodate special sample environments. We present virtual experimental results to demonstrate the scientific performance of PIONEER in measuring tiny samples.

Recently, Yb-based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets have garnered significant interest as possible quantum spin-liquid candidates. One example is YbMgGaO4, which showed many promising spin-liquid features, but also possesses a high degree of disorder owing to site-mixing between the non-magnetic cations. To further elucidate the role of chemical disorder and to explore the phase diagram of these materials in applied field, we present neutron scattering and sensitive magnetometry measurements of the closely related compound, YbZnGaO4. Our results suggest a difference in magnetic anisotropy between the two compounds, and we use key observations of the magnetic phase crossover to motivate an exploration of the field- and exchange parameter-dependent phase diagram, providing an expanded view of the available magnetic states in applied field. This enriched map of the phase space serves as a basis to restrict the values of parameters describing the magnetic Hamiltonian with broad application to recently discovered related materials.

In this paper, a novel GPS/INS integrated navigation system is proposed based on long and short term memory neural network (LSTM NN) for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). UAV navigation system is a kind of nonlinear system usually consisting of inertial measurement unit (IMU) and global positioning system (GPS), which estimates the position and speed of the UAV by Kalman filters. However, the covariance noise parameter in Kalman filters is difficult to set manually, and moreover which should dynamically adapt to the UAV motion. LSTM NN has particular contextual memory units which can store the previous useful information automatically and is selected to design a novel end-to-end navigation method. To improve the accuracy of the model, different configurations of the LSTM NNs are used for comparison. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed data-driven navigation method can achieve the online UAV position estimation well without building accuracy mathematical model and adjusting parameters manually.

In distributed learning and optimization, a network of multiple computing units coordinates to solve a large-scale problem. This article focuses on dynamic optimization over a decentralized network. We develop a communication-efficient algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) with quantized and censored communications, termed DQC-ADMM. At each time of the algorithm, the nodes collaborate to minimize the summation of their time-varying, local objective functions. Through local iterative computation and communication, DQC-ADMM is able to track the time-varying optimal solution. Different from traditional approaches requiring transmissions of the exact local iterates among the neighbors at every time, we propose to quantize the transmitted information, as well as adopt a communication-censoring strategy for the sake of reducing the communication cost in the optimization process. To be specific, a node transmits the quantized version of the local information to its neighbors, if and only if the value sufficiently deviates from the one previously transmitted. We theoretically justify that the proposed DQC-ADMM is capable of tracking the time-varying optimal solution, subject to a bounded error caused by the quantized and censored communications, as well as the system dynamics. Through numerical experiments, we evaluate the tracking performance and communication savings of the proposed DQC-ADMM.

CoSn is a Pauli paramagnet with relatively flat d-bands centered about 100 meV below the Fermi energy Ef. Single crystals of CoSn lightly doped with Fe, In, or Ni are investigated using x-ray and neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat and resistivity measurements. Within the rigid band approximation, hole doping with a few percent of Fe or In should move the flat bands closer to Ef, whereas electron doping with Ni should move the flat bands further away from Ef. We provide evidence that this indeed occurs. Fe and In doping drive CoSn toward magnetism, while Ni doping suppresses CoSn's already weak magnetic response. The resulting ground state is different for Fe versus In doping. For Fe-doped crystals, Co1-xFexSn, with 0.02 < x < 0.27, the magnetic and specific heat data are consistent with the formation of a spin glass, with a glass transition temperature, Tg, ranging from 1 K for x=0.02 to 10 K for x= 0.27. Powder and single crystal neutron diffraction found no evidence of long-range magnetic order below Tg with x = 0.17. For In-doped crystals, CoSn1-yIny, both the magnetic susceptibility and the Sommerfeld coefficient, gamma, increase substantially relative to pure CoSn, but with no clear indication of a magnetic transition for 0.05 < y < 0.2. CoSn crystals doped with Ni (Co0.93Ni0.07Sn) have a significantly smaller magnetic susceptibility and gamma than pure CoSn, consistent with the flat bands further from Ef., 20 pages, 10 figures
