Search

Consider a two-person zero-sum search game between a hider and a searcher. The hider hides among $n$ discrete locations, and the searcher successively visits individual locations until finding the hider. Known to both players, a search at location $i$ takes $t_i$ time units and detects the hider -- if hidden there -- independently with probability $q_i$, for $i=1,\ldots,n$. The hider aims to maximize the expected time until detection, while the searcher aims to minimize it. We prove the existence of an optimal strategy for each player. In particular, the hider's optimal mixed strategy hides in each location with a nonzero probability, and the searcher's optimal mixed strategy can be constructed with up to $n$ simple search sequences. We develop an algorithm to compute an optimal strategy for each player, and compare the optimal hiding strategy with the simple hiding strategy which gives the searcher no location preference at the beginning of the search., Comment: 55 pages, 2 figures

Citrus melanose, caused by the ascomycete fungus Diaporthe citri, is one of the most important diseases in China that affects not only the production but also the quality of citrus. In China, mancozeb is recommended to control melanose disease at the dose of 1.34 g/liter. However, it is widely applied in practice at the dose of 2.66 g/liter or even 4 g/liter, because reduced efficacy of the recommended dose was observed in regions severely damaged by melanose. In this study, some ecofriendly chemicals for melanose management were evaluated. First, the sensitivity to fungicides was screened in the laboratory based on the inhibition of mycelial growth and conidial germination of D. citri. Results showed that both quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicides kresoxim-methyl and trifloxystrobin inhibited conidial germination of D. citri up to 100% at 0.1 μg/ml. The in vivo control efficacy on detached fruit indicated that treatments with elastic nanocopolymer film at 2 g/liter, mancozeb at 1 g/liter, and kresoxim-methyl at 0.1 g/liter significantly inhibited the infection process compared with the control treatment of mineral oil alone. In field trials, the efficacy of kresoxim-methyl at 0.1 g/liter and elastic nanocopolymer film at 2 g/liter mixed with mancozeb at 1 g/liter was equal to that of mancozeb at 2.66 g/liter. The use of mancozeb could be reduced greatly, and the newly developed fungicide combinations are more environmentally friendly due to the low toxicity of both QoI fungicides and elastic nanocopolymer film. The newly developed method with ecofriendly chemicals should play an important role in the management of citrus melanose in the future.

Neoadjuvant ipilimumab + nivolumab (Ipi+Nivo) and nivolumab + chemotherapy (Nivo+CT) induce greater pathologic response rates than CT alone in patients with operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The impact of adding ipilimumab to neoadjuvant Nivo+CT is unknown. Here we report the results and correlates of two arms of the phase 2 platform NEOSTAR trial testing neoadjuvant Nivo+CT and Ipi+Nivo+CT with major pathologic response (MPR) as the primary endpoint. MPR rates were 32.1% (7/22, 80% confidence interval (CI) 18.7–43.1%) in the Nivo+CT arm and 50% (11/22, 80% CI 34.6–61.1%) in the Ipi+Nivo+CT arm; the primary endpoint was met in both arms. In patients without known tumor EGFR/ALK alterations, MPR rates were 41.2% (7/17) and 62.5% (10/16) in the Nivo+CT and Ipi+Nivo+CT groups, respectively. No new safety signals were observed in either arm. Single-cell sequencing and multi-platform immune profiling (exploratory endpoints) underscored immune cell populations and phenotypes, including effector memory CD8+ T, B and myeloid cells and markers of tertiary lymphoid structures, that were preferentially increased in the Ipi+Nivo+CT cohort. Baseline fecal microbiota in patients with MPR were enriched with beneficial taxa, such as Akkermansia, and displayed reduced abundance of pro-inflammatory and pathogenic microbes. Neoadjuvant Ipi+Nivo+CT enhances pathologic responses and warrants further study in operable NSCLC. (ClinicalTrials.gov registration: NCT03158129.)

Background and hypothesisThe recently introduced Bayesian quantile regression (BQR) machine-learning method enables comprehensive analyzing the relationship among complex clinical variables. We analyzed the relationship between multiple cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and different stages of coronary artery disease (CAD) using the BQR model in a vessel-specific manner.MethodsFrom the data of 1,463 patients obtained from the PARADIGM (NCT02803411) registry, we analyzed the lumen diameter stenosis (DS) of the three vessels: left anterior descending (LAD), left circumflex (LCx), and right coronary artery (RCA). Two models for predicting DS and DS changes were developed. Baseline CV risk factors, symptoms, and laboratory test results were used as the inputs. The conditional 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 90% quantile functions of the maximum DS and DS change of the three vessels were estimated using the BQR model.ResultsThe 90th percentiles of the DS of the three vessels and their maximum DS change were 41%-50% and 5.6%-7.3%, respectively. Typical anginal symptoms were associated with the highest quantile (90%) of DS in the LAD; diabetes with higher quantiles (75% and 90%) of DS in the LCx; dyslipidemia with the highest quantile (90%) of DS in the RCA; and shortness of breath showed some association with the LCx and RCA. Interestingly, High-density lipoprotein cholesterol showed a dynamic association along DS change in the per-patient analysis.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates the clinical utility of the BQR model for evaluating the comprehensive relationship between risk factors and baseline-grade CAD and its progression.

Light-emitting diodes based on perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs-LEDs) have gained great interest for next-generation display and lighting technologies prized for their color purity, high brightness, and luminous efficiency which approach the intrinsic limit imposed by light extraction from the device structure. Although the time is ripe for the development of effective light outcoupling strategies to further boost the device performance, this technologically relevant aspect of PNC-LEDs is still without a definitive solution. Here, following theoretical guidelines and without the integration of complex photonic structures, we realize stable PNC-LEDs with external quantum efficiency (EQE) as high as 26.7%. Key to such performance is channeling the recombination zone in PNC emissive layers as thin as 10 nm, which we achieve by finely balancing charge transport using CsPbBr3 PNCs resurfaced with a nickel oxide layer. The ultrathin approach is general and, in principle, applicable to other perovskite nanostructures for fabricating highly efficient, color-tunable transparent LEDs.

Introduction We aimed to identify clinical, pathologic, and treatment factors that are predictive of response and survival in patients with cervical cancer referred to phase I clinical trials. Methods Patients with cervical cancer who received at least one dose of a phase I investigational agent at our institution between 2014 and 2022 were included. The log-rank test was used to analyze differences in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS), and multivariable regression analysis was performed. Results We included 65 patients with a median age of 41 years (range, 20–74), 3 prior therapies (range, 1–7), and 67.7% squamous carcinoma. The rate of distant metastasis at trial entry was 84.6%. The most common molecular alterations included PIK3CA (46.5%), PD-L1+ (46.2%), EPH (30.0%), and CREBBP (23.1%); 23.1% had received a prior checkpoint inhibitor. Phase I trials were for immunotherapy (58.5%) or targeted therapy (41.5%). The rate of biomarker matching was 21.5%. For all patients, median PFS was 3.6 months (95% CI, 2.0–5.2) and OS was 9.3 months (95% CI, 7.0–10.6). Factors at study entry associated with worse survival were presence of bone metastasis (PFS 1.6 vs 4.4 months: hazard ratio [HR], 2.8; p = 0.001; OS 3.8 vs 10.0 months: HR, 3.9; p < 0.0001) and absolute lymphocyte count below 1000/μL (PFS 1.8 vs 5.2 months: HR, 2.9; p = 0.0004; OS 7.0 vs 10.6 months: HR, 3.2; p = 0.0009). Factors associated only with worse OS were absolute neutrophil count above 4700/μL, hemoglobin below 10.5 g/dL, and smoking status. Grade 3+ treatment-related adverse events were seen in 16.9% of cases. Conclusion Bone metastasis and absolute lymphocyte count below normal range at phase I study entry portend poor survival in patients with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer.

Background Increased neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation and abundant NET-associated proteins are frequently found in the inflamed colon of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Peptidyl arginine deiminase 4 (PAD4) activation is essential for the generation of NET and NET-mediated pathogenesis. However, the role of PAD4-dependent NET formation in murine inflammatory bowel disease models and the molecular mechanisms responsible for the altered gut barrier function are unknown. Methods Wild-type and Pad4 knockout (Pad4-/-) mice were administrated 3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in their drinking water. Caco-2 monolayers were used to test the effect of NETs on intestinal barrier function and cytotoxicity. Histones were intrarectally administrated to wild-type mice to determine their effects on intestinal barrier function and cytotoxicity in vivo. Results PAD4 deficiency reduced the severity of DSS-induced colitis with decreased intestinal NET formation and enhanced gut barrier function and integrity in mice. NETs disrupted the barrier function in intestinal epithelial Caco-2 monolayers through their protein, rather than DNA, components. Pretreatment of NETs with histone inhibitors abrogated the effects on epithelial permeability. Consistent with these observations, adding purified histone proteins to Caco-2 monolayers significantly damaged epithelial barrier function, which was associated with the abnormal distribution and integrity of tight junctions as well as with increased cell death. Furthermore, intrarectal administration of histones damaged the intestinal barrier integrity and induced cytotoxicity in the mouse colon epithelium. Conclusions PAD4-mediated NET formation has a detrimental role in acute colitis. NET-associated histones directly inhibit intestinal barrier function, resulting in cytotoxicity in vitro and in vivo.

Studies of the immune landscape led to breakthrough trials of programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors for recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma therapy. This study investigated the timing, influence of somatic copy-number alterations (SCNAs), and clinical implications of PD-L1 and immune-cell patterns in oral precancer (OPC).The authors evaluated spatial CD3, CD3/8, and CD68 density (cells/mmEpithelial, but not CD68 immune-cell, PD-L1 expression was detected in 28% of OPCs, correlated with immune-cell infiltration, 9p21.3 loss of heterozygosity (LOH), and inferior oral cancer-free survival (OCFS), notably in OPCs with low CD3/8 cell density, dysplasia, and/or 9p21.3 LOH. High CD3/8 cell density in dysplastic lesions predicted better OCFS and eliminated the excess risk associated with prior oral cancer and dysplasia. PD-L1 and CD3/8 patterns revealed inferior OCFS in PD-L1 high intrinsic induction and dysplastic immune-cold subgroups.This report provides spatial insight into the immune landscape and drivers of OPCs, and a publicly available immunogenomic data set for future precancer interrogation. The data suggest that 9p21.3 LOH triggers an immune-hot inflammatory phenotype; whereas increased 9p deletion size encompassing CD274 at 9p24.1 may contribute to CD3/8 and PD-L1 depletion during invasive transition. The inferior OCFS in PD-L1-high, immune-cold OPCs support the development of T-cell recruitment strategies.

Machine learning (ML) models of risk prediction with coronary artery calcium (CAC) and CAC characteristics exhibit high performance, but are not inherently interpretable.To determine the direction and magnitude of impact of CAC characteristics on 10-year all-cause mortality (ACM) with explainable ML.We analyzed asymptomatic subjects in the CAC consortium. We trained ML models on 80% and tested on 20% of the data with XGBoost, using clinical characteristics ​+ ​CAC (ML 1) and additional CAC characteristics of CAC density and number of calcified vessels (ML 2). We applied SHAP, an explainable ML tool, to explore the relationship of CAC and CAC characteristics with 10-year all-cause and CV mortality.2376 deaths occurred among 63,215 patients [68% male, median age 54 (IQR 47-61), CAC 3 (IQR 0-94.3)]. ML2 was similar to ML1 to predict all-cause mortality (Area Under the Curve (AUC) 0.819 vs 0.821, p ​= ​0.23), but superior for CV mortality (0.847 vs 0.845, p ​= ​0.03). Low CAC density increased mortality impact, particularly ≤0.75. Very low CAC density ≤0.75 was present in only 4.3% of the patients with measurable density, and 75% occurred in CAC1-100. The number of diseased vessels did not increase mortality overall when simultaneously accounting for CAC and CAC density.CAC density contributes to mortality risk primarily when it is very low ≤0.75, which is primarily observed in CAC 1-100. CAC and CAC density are more important for mortality prediction than the number of diseased vessels, and improve prediction of CV but not all-cause mortality. Explainable ML techniques are useful to describe granular relationships in otherwise opaque prediction models.

Objective Ophthalmology residency programs aim to improve resident surgical teaching through increased surgical exposure over a 4-year period. Resident-centric surgical clinics across various surgical specialties have been established to help develop surgical autonomy and experience. We present the first demonstration of a resident-centric chalazion incision and drainage clinic (chalazion clinic) in an ophthalmology residency with the goal of increasing early surgical exposure to residents. Design The chalazion clinic was founded in July 2019. It is a once weekly procedure clinic conducted by an ophthalmology resident and supervised by an ophthalmology attending. Patients with chalazia were referred directly to this clinic for evaluation and management, rather than the oculoplastics clinic as they were in the past. Retrospective review of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) case logs of all residents per academic year before and after establishment of the chalazion clinic was performed in order to assess the impact on residents' chalazion procedures numbers per academic year. Setting The study involved a single academic ophthalmology department. Participants Ophthalmology residents of all years were present. Results A resident of any year performed an average of 3.0 chalazion procedures per year in the 2018 to 2019 academic year, 3.8 in 2019 to 2020, and 8.4 in the 2020 to 2021, which represents a 180% increase in procedure numbers per resident. Among post-graduate-year 2s (PGY)2s, the average number of chalazion procedures increased from 2.1 procedure per year to 22.3 per year (961.9% increase). Conclusion To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of a dedicated resident-centric chalazion clinic in an ophthalmology residency program. PGY2s demonstrated the largest increase in procedural numbers. While chalazion incision and drainage is a minor procedure, increased exposure to surgical procedures early in training could help improve residents' skills and confidence. This clinic provides a proof of concept of a dedicated minor procedure clinic for ophthalmology residents to increase early procedural volume.

Low-cost electrochemical methane sensor shows improved measurement accuracy after corrections for carbon monoxide, absolute humidity, temperature, and adjusting for time of day in an urban environment.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with an increased risk of stroke. The yield of serial electrocardiographic (ECG) screening for AF is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of AF detected by serial, 7-day ECG patch screenings in older women identified as having an elevated risk of AF according to the CHARGE (Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology)-AF clinical prediction score. METHODS: Postmenopausal women with a 5-year predicted risk of new-onset AF ≥5% according to CHARGE-AF were recruited from the ongoing WHISH (Women’s Health Initiative Strong and Healthy) randomized trial of a physical activity intervention. Participants with AF at baseline by self-report or medical records review were excluded. Screening with 7-day ECG patch monitors was performed at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months from study enrollment. RESULTS: On baseline monitoring, 2.5% of the cohort had AF detected, increasing to 3.7% by 6 months and 4.9% cumulatively by 12 months. Yield of patch screening was higher among participants with a higher (≥10%) CHARGE-AF score: 4.2% had AF detected at baseline, 5.9% at 6 months, and 7.2% at 12 months. Most participants with patch-identified AF never had a clinical diagnosis of AF (36 of 46 [78%]). CONCLUSIONS: Older women with an elevated CHARGE-AF score had a high prevalence of AF on 7-day ECG patch screening. Serial screening over 12 months substantially increased the detection of AF. These data can be useful in helping identify high-risk participants for enrollment in future studies of the management of asymptomatic AF.(Women’s Health Initiative Silent Atrial Fibrillation Recording Study [WHISH STAR]; NCT05366803.)

As CLIL is developing into an established discipline, it is timely to deepen the theorizing of integration of content and language, particularly in CLIL assessment. To illustrate the challenges, a representative example of a high-stakes CLIL biology assessment task in Hong Kong will first be presented. An Integrative Model for CLIL will then be proposed and applied to illuminate the demands of the assessment task and diagnose a sample student performance. The Integrative Model is developed by integrating genre and register theory (Martin & Rose, 2008), Cognitive Discourse Functions (Dalton-Puffer, 2013), thematic patterns theory (Lemke, 1990), Concept-and-Language-Mapping (CLM) Approach (He & Lin, 2019) and translanguaging/trans-semiotizing theories (Garcia & Li, 2014; Lin, 2019). To further illustrate the utility of the Model, a range of possible assessment-for-learning (Black et al., 2003) CLIL task examples designed by the authors will be presented. The article will conclude with implications for CLIL pedagogy and assessment.

Given that subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) adherence in the literature is often studied in closely monitored trials, few studies report real-world SCIT adherence. The purpose of this review is to assess SCIT adherence in real-world settings.A literature search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus for real-world studies examining SCIT adherence was performed. Paired investigators independently reviewed all articles. For this review, "persistence" was defined as continuing therapy and not being lost to follow-up after initiating SCIT, and "adherence" defined as persistence in accordance with prescribed SCIT dose, dosing schedule, and duration. Article quality was first assessed using a modified Newcastle-Ottawa scale and then converted to Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality standards (good, fair, and poor).The search yielded 1596 nonduplicate abstracts, from which 17 articles (n = 263,221 patients) met inclusion criteria. Fourteen (82%) studies reported persistence rates, ranging from 16.0% to 93.7%. Seven (41%) studies reported adherence rates, ranging from 15.1% to 99%. Five (29%) studies (n = 416 patients) collected original data on reasons for discontinuing SCIT, of which inconvenience was most cited. All studies were Oxford level of evidence 2b and of good (n = 10) to fair (n = 7) quality.Real-world SCIT persistence and adherence rates are poor, with the majority of included studies reporting rates 80%; however, they range widely, explained in part by inter-study differences in measuring and reporting adherence-related findings. Future studies on SCIT adherence may benefit from following concordant definitions of persistence and adherence in addition to standardized reporting metrics.

Propofol has been shown to against intestinal reperfusion injury when treated either before or after ischemia, during which mast cell could be activated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of propofol in restoring the intestinal epithelial cells integrity disrupted by mast cell activation or the released tryptase after activation in vitro. We investigated the effect of: (1) tryptase on Caco-2 monolayers in the presence of PAR-2 inhibitor or propofol, (2) mast cell degranulation in a Caco-2/LAD-2 co-culture model in the presence of propofol, and (3) propofol on mast cell degranulation. Epithelial integrity was detected using transepithelial resistance (TER) and permeability to fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran (the apparent permeability coefficient, Papp). The expression of junctional proteins zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1/TJP1) and occludin were determined using western blot analysis and immunofluorescence microscopy. The intracellular levels of reactive oxidative species (ROS) and Ca2+ were measured using flow cytometry. Tryptase directly enhanced intestinal barrier permeability as demonstrated by significant reductions in TER, ZO-1, and occludin protein expression and concomitant increases in Papp. The intestinal barrier integrity was restored by PAR-2 inhibitor but not by propofol. Meanwhile, mast cell degranulation resulted in epithelial integrity disruption in the Caco-2/LAD-2 co-culture model, which was dramatically attenuated by propofol. Mast cell degranulation caused significant increases in intracellular ROS and Ca2+ levels, which were blocked by propofol and NAC. Propofol pretreatment can inhibit mast cell activation via ROS/Ca2+ and restore the intestinal barrier integrity induced by mast cell activation, instead of by tryptase.

Background Bladder cancer is classified into high and low grades with different clinical treatments and prognoses. Thus, accurate preoperative evaluation of the histologic grade through imaging techniques is essential. Purpose To investigate the potential of amide proton transfer-weighted (APTw) MRI in evaluating the grade of bladder cancer and to evaluate whether APTw MRI can add value to diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) at MRI. Materials and Methods In this single-center prospective study, participants with pathologic analysis-confirmed bladder cancer with no previous treatment, lesions larger than 10 mm, and adequate MRI quality were enrolled from July 2020 to September 2021 in a university teaching hospital. All participants underwent preoperative multiparametric MRI, including APTw MRI and DWI. The mean APTw and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of the primary tumor were measured independently by two radiologists. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated to evaluate the diagnostic performance of these quantitative parameters. Results In total, 83 participants (mean age, 64 years ± 13 [SD]; 72 men) were evaluated: 51 with high-grade and 32 with low-grade bladder cancer. High-grade bladder cancer showed higher APTw values (6% [IQR, 4%-12%] vs 2% [IQR, 1%-3%]

Twenty-six (81%) studies reported persistence rates ranging from 7.0% to 88.7%, and 18 (56%) reported adherence rates ranging from 9.6% to 97.0%. Twenty-one (66%) studies surveyed reasons for discontinuing SLIT. All studies were Oxford level of evidence 2b and of good (n = 12) to fair (n = 20) quality.Reported rates of real-world SLIT persistence and adherence varied widely by study methodology (e.g., follow-up duration, objective vs. subjective assessment). Studies with longer follow-up generally reported lower rates; 3-year persistence ranged from 7% to 59.0% and 3-year adherence from 9.6% to 49.0%. Future studies of SLIT adherence would benefit from following concordant definitions of persistence/adherence and standardized reporting metrics.

Social stigma within Korean society hinders structural efforts to reduce HIV disparities among sexual minority men (SMM). To date, however, there have been limited intervention efforts to reduce HIV disparities among SMM in Korea. Therefore, the current mixed-methods study (n = 180) explored young Korean SMM's perspectives on the acceptability of HIV prevention mHealth interventions to inform effective strategies for future intervention studies. We then analyzed participants' comments and suggestions on HIV research and examined associations with the acceptability of mHealth interventions. Through our textual coding and analysis, we identified four primary themes for comments and suggestions for HIV research in Korea: the centrality of stigma, health service accessibility, informational accessibility, and cultural adaptation. Our study suggests culturally adapted HIV intervention addressing stigma, health service accessibility, and information accessibility and mHealth interventions disseminating information and resources for stigmatized young SMM in Korea.

A defender dispatches patrollers to circumambulate a perimeter to guard against potential attacks. The defender decides on the time points to dispatch patrollers and each patroller’s direction and speed, as long as the long-run rate at which patrollers are dispatched is capped at some constant. An attack at any point on the perimeter requires the same amount of time, during which it will be detected by each passing patroller independently with the same probability. The defender wants to maximize the probability of detecting an attack before it completes, while the attacker wants to minimize it. We study two scenarios, depending on whether the patrollers are undercover or wear a uniform. Conventional wisdom would suggest that the attacker gains advantage if he can see the patrollers going by so as to time his attack, but we show that the defender can achieve the same optimal detection probability by carefully spreading out the patrollers probabilistically against a learning attacker.

There are minimal data describing outcomes in ambulatory pediatric and young adult ventricular assist device (VAD)-supported patient populations. We performed a retrospective analysis of encounter-level data from 2006 to 2017 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) to compare emergency department (ED) resource utilization and outcomes for pediatric (≤18 years, n = 494) to young adult (19-29 years, n = 2,074) VAD-supported patient encounters. Pediatric encounters were more likely to have a history of congenital heart disease (11.3% vs. 4.8%). However, Pediatric encounters had lower admission/transfer rates (37.8% vs. 57.8%) and median charges ($3,334 (IQR $1,473-$19,818) vs. $13,673 ($3,331-$45,884)) (all p0.05). Multivariable logistic regression modeling revealed that age itself was not a predictor of admission, instead high acuity primary diagnoses and medical complexity were: (adjusted odds ratio; 95% confidence intervals): cardiac (3.0; 1.6-5.4), infection (3.4; 1.7-6.5), bleeding (3.9; 1.7-8.8), device complication (7.2; 2.7-18.9), and ≥1 chronic comorbidity (4.1; 2.5-6.7). In this largest study to date describing ED resource use and outcomes for pediatric and young adult VAD-supported patients, we found that, rather than age, high acuity presentations and comorbidities were primary drivers of clinical outcomes. Thus, reducing morbidity in this population should target comorbidities and early recognition of VAD-related complications.

The seismic performance of embankments is an important consideration for the design and construction of high-speed railways (HSRs) in near-fault areas. Incorporating geosynthetics into embankment soil can improve seismic resistance. However, the effect of different reinforcement methods on the seismic performance of embankments is not well understood. In this study, two 1 : 20 scaled embankment models (full-length-geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported embankment (FRPE) and turn-back-geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported embankment (TRPE)) were tested on a shaking table to compare their seismic performance and failure characteristics. The results show that under near-fault bidirectional seismic excitation, the pile foundations of both embankments exhibited bending deformation, with the largest bending moment in the middle of the pile body. The TRPE reduced the vertical dynamic response of the embankment slope but exhibited a more remarkable horizontal dynamic response than the FRPE. Furthermore, the embankment deformation and excess pore water pressure of the TRPE were generally larger than those of the FRPE. Nonetheless, the TRPE has potential application in practical engineering as it ensures earthquake resistance, with higher economic benefits.
