Background: There are several investigations that have revealed that cerebral dopamine (DA) plays a pivotal role in the occurrence of premature ejaculation (PE). Although tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is an essential enzyme for the synthesis of DA, only few investigations have describedthe role of TH in regulation mechanisms for ejaculation till now. To investigate whether there is a correlation between TH expression level in the brain and different ejaculation behavior in rats. Then explore whether the TH expression in the brain will change after acute dapoxetine treatment in rats with Rapid ejaculation. Methods and Results: Male S-D rats were separated into three groups based on their ejaculation frequency: Rapid, Normal, and Sluggish. Expression level of DA in the brain was determined by enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA) kit, TH expression level in the brain was determined by immunohistochemistry and Western Blot (WB) techniques. Among the three groups, DA and TH expression level were the highest in the Rapid ejaculation group, while the lowest was the Sluggish ejaculation group. The results also showed that TH level was positively associated with ejaculation frequency (r=0.8038, PConclusion: Changes in ejaculation behavior were significantly linked with TH level. Upregulated TH in selected brain regions related with ejaculation could cause rapid ejaculation. The effect of dapoxetine in prolonging ejaculation could be related to TH downregulation within the brain.

Flowering plants have evolved numerous intraspecific and interspecific prezygotic reproductive barriers to prevent production of unfavourable offspring1. Within a species, self-incompatibility (SI) is a widely utilized mechanism that rejects self-pollen2,3 to avoid inbreeding depression. Interspecific barriers restrain breeding between species and often follow the SI × self-compatible (SC) rule, that is, interspecific pollen is unilaterally incompatible (UI) on SI pistils but unilaterally compatible (UC) on SC pistils1,4–6. The molecular mechanisms underlying SI, UI, SC and UC and their interconnections in the Brassicaceae remain unclear. Here we demonstrate that the SI pollen determinant S-locus cysteine-rich protein/S-locus protein 11 (SCR/SP11)2,3 or a signal from UI pollen binds to the SI female determinant S-locus receptor kinase (SRK)2,3, recruits FERONIA (FER)7–9 and activates FER-mediated reactive oxygen species production in SI stigmas10,11 to reject incompatible pollen. For compatible responses, diverged pollen coat protein B-class12–14 from SC and UC pollen differentially trigger nitric oxide, nitrosate FER to suppress reactive oxygen species in SC stigmas to facilitate pollen growth in an intraspecies-preferential manner, maintaining species integrity. Our results show that SRK and FER integrate mechanisms underlying intraspecific and interspecific barriers and offer paths to achieve distant breeding in Brassicaceae crops.

Surveys of gender diversity in editorial boards of journals have been conducted in several disciplines, but not in andrology.The present study was designed to investigate the gender distribution of editorial boards of andrology journals.A total of eight andrology journals were included in the study, and the gender information and geographical location of editors were identified based on the information obtained from the Internet.A total of 382 editors' gender information was confirmed. Women made up 1 of the 9 editors-in-chief (11.1%), 13 of the 68 deputy/associate editors (19.1%), 37 of the 270 editorial/advisory board members (13.7%) and 0 of the 35 other types of editors (0%). There was no significant difference in the journal impact factor between male and female editors-in-chief (3.060 ± 1.274 vs 3.842), and no significant association was found between impact factor and the proportion of female editor (Spearman's r = -0.204, P = 0.629).Andrology-related journals lacked adequate gender diversity, not all journals reserved reasonable editorial positions for women. Besides, increased impact factor did not bring additional gender bias. Women should be given more reasonable seats to improve gender diversity in andrology-related journals.

BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been now better understood, and multiple complications resulting from COVID-19 infection were confirmed. However, clinic evidence for post-COVID-19 sequelae is still lacking, including sexual and reproductive health. OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate the effects of previous COVID-19 infection experience on sexual and reproductive health among Chinese population. METHODS From February 20 to 25, 2023, a total of 4,000 Chinese married individuals aged 20-40 years were enrolled through internet platform to complete questionnaires, including demographics (e.g., ethnicity, age, education, etc.), with or without COVID-19, recovery time from COVID-19 (if infection), premature ejaculation diagnostic tool (PEDT) and International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) (for male), female sexual function index (FSFI) (for female), as well as reproductive information (e.g., childbearing history, pregnancy planning). Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic analysis were applied to identify the correlation between COVID-19 and sexual/reproductive health data. RESULTS Finally, a total of 1575 eligible respondents (39.4%) were included for analysis, including 196 individuals reported non-COVID-19 infection and 1379 individuals reported recovery from COVID-19 for more than 4 weeks. With regard to sexual health, the PEDT scores of infected males were significantly higher than those of uninfected males (6.32±3.98 vs. 5.03±4.19, P=0.004), while IIEF-5 scores and prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) were not significantly different between infected and uninfected male groups via univariate analysis. Also, no significant differences were found between infected and uninfected female groups regarding the FSFI scores and prevalence of female sexual dysfunction (FSD). Furthermore, the logistic regression analysis showed that there was no significant correlation between COVID-19 infection experience and the occurrence of ED/FSD. In addition, more than half of male and female respondents who have contracted COVID-19 reported that their sexual desire, sexual intercourse frequency, satisfaction, and masturbation frequency were not lower than those before COVID-19 infection. With respect to reproductive health, 56.65% of male and 61.20% of female respondents planned to delay pregnancy, and the main reasons were worried about the health of offspring and increased risks of women's health due to previous COVID-19 infection. CONCLUSIONS Our results show that males with COVID-19 infection experience had higher PEDT scores, while there was no significant correlation between COVID-19 infection experience and the occurrence of ED/FSD among Chinese population. Whether previous COVID-19 infection experience affects fertility has become a growing concern, and further follow-up is needed to investigate long-term effects of COVID-19 infection experience on reproductive health.

Background Many studies have reported a possible strong relationship between poor sleep quality, sleep disruption, sleep disorders, and erectile dysfunction (ED). Aim This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and ED. Methods Patients diagnosed with ED by the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) questionnaire and 72 healthy adult men were included. Participants completed the questionnaire, underwent a detailed physical examination, and provided blood samples. All enrolled subjects then wore the Fitbit Charge 2 that monitored sleep throughout the night. Outcomes Primary outcome measures included scores on the IIEF-5, General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and sleep monitoring parameters obtained from Fitbit Charge 2. Results Finally, a total of 107 ED patients and 72 healthy adult men were enrolled in this study. Univariate analysis indicated that the GAD-7 (P < .001), PHQ-9 (P < .001), and PSQI scores (P < .001) significantly differed according to the presence/absence of ED. Further multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the PHQ-9 (odds ratio [OR]: 1.227, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.070-1.407; P = .003) and PSQI scores (OR: 1.220, 95%CI: 1.116-1.334; P < .001) were independent risk factors for ED. Analysis of objective sleep monitoring parameters showed that total sleep time (TST) (P = .001), sleep onset latency (SOL) (P = .026), deep sleep (N3) duration (P = .011) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep duration (P < .001) were significantly differed between the 2 groups, with durations in the ED group significantly lower than those in the non-ED group. In addition, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis indicated that the REM sleep duration had the highest area under the curve (AUC: 0.728) of all sleep parameters, with a P value < .001, a sensitivity of 72.2% and a specificity of 73.8%. Clinical Implications Urologists and andrologists should be aware of impacted sleep quality and depression in ED patients. Strengths & Limitations The strength of this study is that the relationship between sleep quality and ED was assessed with both a subjective scale and an objective sleep monitoring tool. However, our study only described an association between sleep quality and ED and did not establish a causal relationship. Conclusion Sleep parameters are strongly associated with ED, indicating that poor sleep quality may increase the likelihood of ED.

C-reactive protein (CRP), as a marker of inflammation, may be closely related to erectile dysfunction (ED), however, there is no meta-analysis exists for it.We aimed to verify the relationship between CRP and erectile dysfunction and to explore the changes of CRP levels in ED patients after first-line treatment.We searched databases including the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and MEDLINE to identify studies up to January 1, 2022. We performed a comprehensive analysis of the included studies by STATA software and calculated standardized mean differences (SMDs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals.A total of 12 studies were included and the analysis showed that CRP levels were higher significantly in patients with erectile dysfunction than the healthy controls (p 0.001) and decreased by a mean of 0.38 mg/L after first-line PDE5i drug treatment (p = 0.001).This novel meta-analysis suggests that CRP is statistically significantly associated with erectile dysfunction and may be a predictor or risk factor for the assessment of ED. However, further original studies with large sample sizes are needed to validate this.

Background A connection between multiple sclerosis (MS) and erectile dysfunction (ED) has been debatable. Aim To assess the pooled prevalence of ED among men with MS and whether MS was a risk factor for ED. Methods A systematic review of the literature was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library to find relevant English-language studies published up to February 2022 that assessed the prevalence of ED in MS patients. Two authors independently evaluated the full text of the enrolled studies to determine eligibility, and if there was disagreement, the decision was made by a third author after discussion. Assessment tools adapted for prevalence studies were used to evaluate the quality of cross-sectional studies, and the quality of case-control studies was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The relative risk (RR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to assess the strength of association between MS and the risk of ED. The sources of heterogeneity were investigated by subgroup analysis. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the stability of the results. Outcomes The pooled prevalence of ED in MS patients as well as 95% CIs were estimated, and the RR and its 95% CI were used to assess the strength of association between MS and the risk of ED. Results Sixteen studies included collectively gave information about ED in 2,760 MS men, resulting in a pooled prevalence of 49% (95% CI = 42–56%) for ED with a large heterogeneity. Synthesis of results revealed that MS was significantly associated with an increased risk of ED (RR = 3.17, 95% CI = 2.31–4.36, P < .001; heterogeneity: I2 = 0.0%, P = .716). The pooled prevalence estimates of ED were 55, 63, and 57% in the age >40, IIEF diagnostic tool, and mean disease duration >10 years subgroups, respectively. Clinical Implications The present meta-analysis indicates that MS patients had a significantly increased risk of ED, which should raise awareness of the potential association between MS and ED by clinicians. Strengths & Limitations This is the first meta-analysis to provide the global prevalence of ED in MS patients and to demonstrate that MS is a risk factor for ED. However, all enrolled studies were observational in design, which may reduce the robustness of this evidence. Conclusion Results of this meta-analysis showed that ED was highly prevalent in adult men with MS and MS was a potential risk factor for ED development.

Several different mutations in the proteome of centriole 1 centriolar protein B (POC1B) have been linked to cone dystrophy or cone-rod dystrophy (CORD). However, mutations in POC1B that are associated with both CORD and oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) have not been reported previously. Here, whole-exome sequencing was performed to identify a homozygous frameshift variant (c.151delG) in POC1B in the two brothers who had been diagnosed with both CORD and OAT from a consanguineous family. Transcript and protein analyses of biological samples from the two patients carrying the variant showed that POC1B protein is lost in sperm cells. The system CRISPR/Cas9 was utilized to create poc1bc.151delG/c.151delG knock-in (KI) mice. Notably, poc1bc.151delG/c.151delG KI male mice presented with OAT phenotype. Additionally, testicular histology and transmission electron microscopy analysis of the testes and sperm indicated that Poc1b mutation results in abnormal formation of acrosomes and flagella. Collectively, according to our experimental data on human volunteers and animal models, biallelic mutations in POC1B can cause OAT and CORD in mice and humans.

Background We investigated the association between premature ejaculation (PE) and the quality of residential environment from a new perspective to explore the influencing factors of PE, especially in four PE subtypes. We selected 499 adult males to participate in this study from September 2021 to September 2022. The satisfaction of residential environment was assessed by the Perceived Residential Environment Quality Indicators (PREQIs) scale, the control ability over ejaculation was assessed using the premature ejaculation diagnostic tool (PEDT), and their depression was assessed using the self-rating depression scale (SDS). Results The Architectural and Town-planning Spaces (ATS), Green Spaces (GS), and Commercial Services (CS) of PE patients (N = 346) were compared with those of control group (N = 153), showed a significant difference (p r = 0.76), whereas GS and CS had a negative correlation (r = -0.87, -0.90); ATS had a positive correlation with SDS (r = 0.96), whereas GS and CS had a negative correlation (r = -0.74, -0.81). Conclusions We discovered that PE patients more likely resided in high-density areas with little green space and subpar commercial services, which might have an adverse effect on their mental health. This study offered a new viewpoint about the influence of residential environment on PE.

Abnormal body mass index (BMI) is associated with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction (ED). However, the relationship between different BMI categories and the levels of ED severity remains unclear. In the current study, 878 men from the andrology clinic in Central China were recruited. Erectile function was assessed by the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) scores. Questionnaires included questions about demographic characteristics (age, height, weight, educational status), lifestyle habits (drinking, smoking, sleep time), and medical history. Logistic regression was used to examine the association between ED risk and BMI. The incidence of ED was 53.1%. BMI was significantly higher in men from the ED group than in those from the non-ED group (P = 0.01). Compared with the normal weight group, obese men had a higher risk of ED (OR = 1.97, 95% CI = 1.25-3.14, P = 0.004), even after adjustment for potential confounders (OR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.10-2.90, P = 0.02). Moreover, the positive correlation between obesity and moderate/severe ED severity was confirmed by logistic regression analysis (moderate/severe ED, OR = 2.71, 95% CI = 1.44-5.04, P = 0.002), even after adjusting for potential confounders (OR = 2.51 95% CI = 1.24-5.09, P = 0.01). Collectively, our findings indicate a positive correlation between obesity and the risk of moderate/severe ED. Clinicians could pay more attention to moderate/severe ED patients to maintain a healthy body weight to improve erectile function.

SUMMARYCarotenoids perform a broad range of important functions in humans; therefore, carotenoid biofortification of maize (Zea maysL.), one of the most highly produced cereal crops worldwide, would have a global impact on human health.PLASTID TERMINAL OXIDASE(PTOX) genes play an important role in carotenoid metabolism; however, the possible function ofPTOXin carotenoid biosynthesis in maize has not yet been explored. In this study, we identified the maizePTOXgeneZmPTOX1by forward genetic screening.While most higher plant species possess a single copy of thePTOXgene, maize carries two tandemly duplicated copies ofZmPTOX. Characterization ofZmptox1mutants revealed that disrupting one copy ofZmPTOX1was enough to impair carotenoid biosynthesis, indicating thatZmPTOX1is essential for carotenoid biosynthesis in maize kernels. Remarkably, overexpression ofZmPTOX1significantly improved the content of carotenoids, especially β-carotene (provitamin A), which was increased by ~3-fold, in maize kernels.Overall, our study shows thatZmPTOX1plays a crucial role in carotenoid biosynthesis in maize kernels and suggests that fine-tuning the expression of this gene could improve the nutritional value of cereal grains.

Background The prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients was reported rarely and with small sample. Aim The study sought to explore the prevalence of ED in men with AS and to determine whether AS is a risk factor for ED. Methods A systematic search was conducted in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, VIP Database, CBM, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. The search was restricted to the articles published up to October 2022. Assessment tools adapted for prevalence studies were used to evaluate the quality of cross-sectional studies, and the quality of case-control studies was assessed by Newcastle–Ottawa scale. The relative risk (RR) and the standard mean difference (SMD) were used to evaluate the association between AS and ED. The subgroup analyses were conducted to identify the resources of heterogeneity. The sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the stability of the pooled estimates. Data were analyzed and graphed using STATA 16.0. Outcomes The pooled prevalence of ED in AS patients was calculated and the RR and the SMD were used to evaluate the association between AS and ED. Results A total of 393 AS patients, enrolled in the 8 included studies, were assessed for the prevalence of ED. The pooled ED prevalence estimate was 44% (95% confidence interval [CI], 25% to 63%, P < .001) with the statistical heterogeneity (I2 = 95.1%, P < .001). After pooling the data for RR, the results showed that men with AS were at a significantly higher risk for ED when compared with the general population without AS (RR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.28 to 3.25, P = .003; heterogeneity: I2 = 72.6%, P = .003). The pooled results of 5 studies, which provided the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score, demonstrated that patients with AS had significantly lower values in the IIEF erectile function domain as compared with the healthy control subjects (SMD, −0.60; 95% CI, −0.80 to −0.41; P < .001; heterogeneity: I2 = 34.4%, P = .192). Additionally, the other domain of the IIEF also showed lower values when compared with the general population without AS (P < .05). Clinical Implications The present meta-analysis provides evidence of the management of ED in men with AS. Strengths and Limitations This is the first meta-analysis to provide the prevalence of ED in AS patients and to demonstrate that AS is a risk factor for ED. However, the results after pooling the included studies showed significant heterogeneity. Conclusion Our meta-analysis demonstrated the high prevalence of ED in men with AS and that AS is a potential risk factor for ED.

Background Leptin, which was only discovered in humans in 1994, has recently been shown to have a possible link with premature ejaculation. Aim To evaluate whether serum leptin levels differed between patients with premature ejaculation and healthy men, and to analyze the changes in leptin levels before and after treatment. Methods Six studies assessing the relationship between leptin and premature ejaculation published up to October 2021 were identified from multiple databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane) and the data were analyzed by Stata software. Outcomes Differences in leptin levels in premature ejaculation patients and healthy people, and changes of leptin levels in premature ejaculation population before and after treatment. Results Analysis of studies assessing differences in leptin concentrations between patients with PE and healthy men showed that there was a statistically significant difference in leptin levels between PE patients and controls (WMD (95% CI) = 17.89 (8.64, 27.14), P < .001). On the other hand, the analysis of data from 3 studies describing serum leptin levels in PE patients before and after treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) showed that there was a significant decrease with leptin levels in PE patients after treatment (WMD (95%CI) = 22.06 (17.21, 26.92), P < .001). Clinical Implications It is possible that leptin can be used as a new marker for premature ejaculation. Strength & Limitations The strength of this study is that it is the first meta- analysis to assess the differences of serum leptin levels between patients with premature ejaculation and healthy subjects and the changes of leptin levels before and after treatment in patients with premature ejaculation. A major limitation is that a greater heterogeneity was identified through our analysis, however we did not find a definitive source of heterogeneity. Conclusion There was a statistically significant relationship between serum leptin levels and patients with PE. In addition, serum leptin levels in patients with PE decreased significantly after 8 weeks of treatment with SSRIs.

Conductive hydrogels have attracted considerable attention owing to their potential for use as electronic skin and sensors. However, the loss of the inherent elasticity or conductivity in cold environments severely limits their working conditions. Generally, organic solvents or inorganic salts can be incorporated into hydrogels as cryoprotectants. However, their toxicity and/or corrosive nature as well as the significant water loss during the solvent exchange present serious difficulties. Herein, a liquid-like yet non-toxic polymer-polyethylene glycol (PEG) was attempted as one of the components of solvent for hydrogels. In the premixed PEG-water hybrid solvent, polyacrylamide (PAAm) was in situ polymerized, overcoming the inevitable water loss induced by the high osmotic pressure of the PEG solution and achieving tailored water capacity. Interestingly, the mechanical strength (“soft-to-rigid” transition) and anti-freezing properties of organohydrogels can be simultaneously tuned over a very wide range through adjusting PEG content. This was due to that with increasing PEG in solvent, the PAAm chains transformed from stretching to curling conformation, while PEG bonded with water molecules via hydrogen bonds, weakening the crystallization of water at subzero temperature. Additionally, a highly conductive Ti3C2Tx-MXene was further introduced into the organohydrogels, achieving a uniform distribution triggered by the attractive interaction between the rich functional groups of the nanofillers and the polymer chains. The nanocomposite hydrogels demonstrate high electrical conductivity and strain sensitivity, along with a wide working temperature window. Such a material can be used for monitoring human joint movement even at low temperature and has potential applications in wearable strain sensors.

Sleep is a fundamental biological requirement, and lack of sleep has increasingly been recognized to cause metabolic consequences and adversely affect immune function. Recent articles have pointed to how sleep and sexual functions may be interlinked, involving inflammation, vascular alterations, tissue damage, and endothelial dysfunction.We examined the effect of paradoxical sleep deprivation on sexual behavior and hemogram parameters in male rats. In addition, we also explored whether 7 days of recovery sleep is sufficient to offset these detriments.Male rats were given sexual experience through training. At the fifth test, the sexually vigorous males were randomly separated into three experimental groups: paradoxical sleep deprivation (rats submitted to 96 h of paradoxical sleep deprivation, n = 6), recovery sleep (recovery sleep 7 days after paradoxical sleep deprivation, n = 6), and control (n = 10). We evaluated the sexual behaviors of three groups. Blood samples were collected to analyze hemogram parameters.In this study, we recognized that repeated copulatory tests can lead to changes in sexual behavior over time. We found that 96 h of acute sleep deprivation impaired the sexual behavior of male rats. Our results demonstrated that 96 h of paradoxical sleep deprivation also increased levels of white blood cell subpopulations, in particular neutrophils. Recovery sleep after sleep deprivation has a certain reversal effect on white blood cell subgroups and impairment of sexual behavior, with some signs that not all levels were back to baseline even after 7 days of recovery.In general, we found that 96 h of paradoxical sleep deprivation impaired the sexual behavior of male rats. Our results demonstrated that paradoxical sleep deprivation can cause systemic inflammation by affecting white blood cell subpopulations, in particular neutrophils. Seven days of recovery sleep after sleep deprivation has a certain reversal effect to these impairments.

Introduction: A few studies involved the relationship between vitamin D and diabetes mellitus (DM) with erectile dysfunction (ED), and no meta-analysis was conducted to pool these data. The main purpose of our study was to examine the changes in serum vitamin D levels in patients with DM combined with ED. Methods: An extensive search was performed, including the following words: “erectile dysfunction,” “diabetes,” and “vitamin D.” Databases, including Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Web of Science, were retrieved to identify studies published up to September 30, 2021. Four studies were eligible for our meta-analysis. Results: The weighted mean difference and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated to the data we selected. The results showed that the level of vitamin D in DM with ED was significantly lower (12.5 nmol/mL) than patients with diabetes alone (p = 0.002). Conclusion: Our novel meta-analysis suggests that vitamin D may be a risk factor for DM with ED, which can provide a new idea for the treatment and prevention of DM with ED.

Zirconium-based porphyrin metal organic framework (Zr-PMOF) is considered as a promising photocatalytic material due to its large specific surface area, wide visible light absorption capacity, good water stability and chemical stability. However, the recombination of photogenerated carriers of monomer PMOF limits its performance of photocatalytic organic pollutants degradation. Metal sulfide has a suitable visible band gap, which can form a heterojunction with MOF materials to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of MOF. Therefore, a typical metal sulfide semiconductor ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) is introduced into a Zr-MOF (MOF-525) by solvothermal method to prepare the ZIS/MOF-525 composite photocatalyst in this work. The results of characterization analysis, optical analysis and electrochemical analysis show that the interface of ZIS/MOF-525 forms a typical type-Ⅱ heterojunction, which accelerates the electron transport rate and effectively inhibits the recombination of photogenerated e- and h+ in MOF-525. The optimal removal efficiency of tetracycline (TC) by ZIS/MOF-525-3 can reach 93.8% under 60 min visible light illumination, which is greater than that of pure MOF-525 (37.2%) and ZnIn2S4 (70.0%), and it can still maintain good stability after five cycles reusing experiment. This work provides feasible insight for the preparation of novel and efficient PMOF-based photocatalysts in the future.

The 3D honeycomb-like fabric decorated with MXene is woven as solar evaporator.The honeycomb structure enables light-trapping and recycling of convective and radiative heat.The 3D honeycomb-fabric evaporator possesses high solar efficiency up to 93.5% under 1 sun irradiation and excellent salt harvesting ability. Solar steam generation technology has emerged as a promising approach for seawater desalination, wastewater purification, etc. However, simultaneously achieving superior light absorption, thermal management, and salt harvesting in an evaporator remains challenging. Here, inspired by nature, a 3D honeycomb-like fabric decorated with hydrophilic Ti3C2Tx (MXene) is innovatively designed and successfully woven as solar evaporator. The honeycomb structure with periodically concave arrays creates the maximum level of light-trapping by multiple scattering and omnidirectional light absorption, synergistically cooperating with light absorbance of MXene. The minimum thermal loss is available by constructing the localized photothermal generation, contributed by a thermal-insulating barrier connected with 1D water path, and the concave structure of efficiently recycling convective and radiative heat loss. The evaporator demonstrates high solar efficiency of up to 93.5% and evaporation rate of 1.62 kg m−2 h−1 under one sun irradiation. Moreover, assisted by a 1D water path in the center, the salt solution transporting in the evaporator generates a radial concentration gradient from the center to the edge so that the salt is crystallized at the edge even in 21% brine, enabling the complete separation of water/solute and efficient salt harvesting. This research provides a large-scale manufacturing route of high-performance solar steam generator. Background: To date, no study has evaluated trends in the burden of alcohol-induced cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) 2019 study. Herein, we report on the global burden of alcohol-induced cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases in terms of age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI) from 1990 to 2019, based on analysis of GBD 2019 data. Methods: The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to determine the trends in the age-standardized incidence and mortality rates and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for alcohol-induced cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases. Results: From 1990 to 2019, the global age-standardized incidence rate showed an upward trend (EAPC = 0.10), whereas the global age-standardized mortality rate and DALYs showed a downward trend (EAPC = − 0.88 and − 0.89, respectively). Low-(187.08 in 2019) and low-middle (178.11 in 2019)SDI regions had much higher age-standardized DALYs. Eastern Europe saw the largest increases in the age-standardized mortality rate and DALYs. Lithuania had the largest increase in mortalities caused by alcohol-induced cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases(EAPC = 4.61). The age-standardized mortality rates and DALYs were higher in men than in women. Conclusion: From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized incidence rate of alcohol-induced cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases increased globally; however, both the age-standardized mortality rate and DALYs caused by alcohol-induced cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases showed decreasing trends. Future studies should devise preventive strategies for low and low-middle SDI regions, Eastern Europe, Lithuania, and other high-risk regions.

Background Shengjing capsule (SJC) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has gained widespread clinical application for the treatment of male infertility (MI). However, the pharmacological mechanism of SJC against MI remains vague to date. Method The active ingredients of SJC and their targets were identified from the database, and MI-related genes were retrieved from several databases. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) data were obtained to construct the PPI networks. The candidate targets of SJC against MI were identified through topological analysis of the PPI network. Functional enrichment analysis of candidate targets was performed, and the key target genes were identified from the gene-pathway network. Results We identified 154 active ingredients and 314 human targets of SJC, as well as 564 MI-related genes. Eight pharmacological network diagrams illustrating the interactions among herbs, active ingredients, targets, and pathways, were constructed. The four dominating network maps included a compound-target network of SJC, a compound-anti-MI targets network, a candidate targets PPI network, a pathway-gene network, and a drug-key compounds-hub targets-pathways network. Systematic analysis indicated that the targets of SJC in the treatment of MI mainly involved RPS6, MAPK1, MAPK3, MDM2, and DDX5. Pathway enrichment analysis showed that SJC had the potential to impact multiple biological pathways, such as cancer-related pathways, viral/bacterial infection-related pathways, and signal transduction-related pathways. Conclusion Our results preliminarily revealed the pharmacological basis and molecular mechanism SJC in treating MI, but further experimental research is required to verify these findings.

Prorocentrum donghaiense blooms occur annually in the East China Sea coastal waters, degrading ecosystem functions and impeding economic development. Dissolved organic nitrogen and phosphorus (DON and DOP) are the main components in the marine nutrient pools and are closely related to harmful algal blooms. From April to June 2019, a survey was conducted along the East China Sea coast (Sansha and Lianjiang counties) to investigate the relationship between dissolved organic nutrients and P. donghaiense bloom. Our findings showed that dinoflagellates dominated the phytoplankton community, and dissolved organic nutrients were the major factors influencing community structure during the P. donghaiense bloom. Redundancy analysis indicated that P. donghaiense abundance was primarily affected by DON in the Sansha area while it was primarily affected by DON and DOP in the Lianjiang area. Correlation analysis also confirmed a strong positive correlation between dissolved organic nutrients and P. donghaiense abundance both in the Sansha and Lianjiang coastal areas (p 0.001). Furthermore, a culture experiment was carried out during the bloom to further investigate the effect of dissolved organic nutrients on the phytoplankton community structure. After 10 days of culture, dinoflagellates' relative abundance decreased from 97.1% to 28.2% in the inorganic treatment, whereas dinoflagellates continued to dominate the phytoplankton community in the organic treatment (76.9%). As a result, we propose that dissolved organic nutrients are responsible for the P. donghaiense bloom outbreak and promote the phytoplankton community shift from diatoms to dinoflagellates.

Testosterone deficiency and changes in testosterone levels are important in men's health and may be associated with fat accumulation. In order to investigate the connection between testosterone and fat accumulation in adult males, we employed lipid accumulation product and compared it to triglyceride-glucose and Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance.An intersecting surface research of participators from 2013 to 2014 was carried out using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, in addition, participants from 2015 to 2016 were selected. Using multivariate adjusted logistic regression, the connection between lipid accumulation product, testosterone levels, and testosterone insufficiency was investigated, smoothed curve fitting was calculated to integrate non-linear relationships, and subgroup analysis was performed to identify sensitive populations.After removing all potential confounders, testosterone levels in 1651 subjects tended to decrease with increasing continuous variable lipid accumulation product (β = -0.49, 95% confidence interval [-0.77, -0.22], p = 0.0005) and adding the chance of testosterone deficiency (odds ratio = 1.01, 95% confidence interval [1.01, 1.01], p0.0001). In the lipid accumulation product quartile, testosterone levels decreased the most (β = -77.65, 95% confidence interval [-110.99, -44.31], p0.0001) and the risk of testosterone deficiency was highest (odds ratio = 2.76, 95% confidence interval [1.47, 5.20], p = 0.0016). The area under the curve values were 0.718 (95% confidence interval: 0.688-0.750) for lipid accumulation product, 0.723 (95% confidence interval: 0.689-0.756) for Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance, and 0.673 (95% confidence interval: 0.640-0.708) for triglyceride-glucose, with no statistical difference between lipid accumulation product and Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance comparisons. The cut-off value of lipid accumulation product ≥52.408 predicted testosterone deficiency with good sensitivity and specificity.Higher lipid accumulation product was linked to a higher incidence of testosterone loss and inadequate, especially in hypertensive and non-smoker. Lipid accumulation product is a better predictor of testosterone deficiency than triglyceride-glucose and does not differ significantly from the Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance phase.

Genetic transformation is important for gene functional study and crop breeding. Though it is available in many plant species, the transformation efficiency in wheat is generally low, which greatly restricts the genetic manipulation in wheat. Here, we use multi-omic analysis strategy to uncover core transcriptional regulatory network (TRN) driving wheat shoot regeneration and identify key factors that boost the transformation efficiency. RNA-seq, ATAC-seq and CUT&Tag were used to profile the transcriptome and chromatin dynamic during regeneration process from immature embryo of wheat variety Fielder. Sequential expression of gene clusters that mediating cell fate transition during regeneration is induced by auxin signaling, in coordination with changes of chromatin accessibility, H3K27me3 and H3K4me3 status. The TRN driving wheat shoot regeneration was built-up and 446 key transcriptional factors (TFs) occupied the core of network were identified, including functionally tested regeneration factors in other species. We further compared the regeneration process between wheat andArabidopsisand found that DNA binding with one finger (DOF) TFs show distinct patterns in two species. Furthermore, we found thatTaDOF5.6(TraesCS6A02G274000) andTaDOF3.4(TraesCS2B02G592600) can significantly improve the transformation efficiency of different wheat varieties. Thus, our data uncovers the molecular regulatory insights for wheat shoot regeneration process and provides potential novel targets for improving transformation efficiency in wheat.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between 25(OH) levels and erectile dysfunction (ED), particularly arteriogenic ED (A-ED). From September 2020 to January 2022, 150 patients diagnosed with ED by the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) questionnaire were included. All patients were classified as organic ED and psychological ED by nocturnal penile tumescence and rigidity (NPTR) examination. Organic ED patients were divided into A-ED and NA-ED by penile doppler ultrasound (PDU) examination. Finally, 150 patients complaining of ED were enrolled in our study. 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower in patients with organic ED (18.24 ± 6.04 ng/ml) than in patients with psychogenic ED (20.90 ± 8.79 ng/ml) (p = 0.032). In A-ED and NA-ED, the mean of peak systolic flow velocity (PSV) values was 18.94 ± 5.28 cm/s and 51.57 ± 15.42 cm/s (p 0.001), and the mean of 25(OH)D was 15.66 ± 5.86 ng/ml and 20.48 ± 5.90 ng/ml, respectively (p 0.001). The results showed that 25(OH)D levels were positively correlated with IIEF-5 scores and the PSV values in A-ED patients. The 25(OH)D cut-off value differentiating between A-ED and NA-ED was 15.05 ng/ml. Low 25(OH)D levels may be an independent risk factor for ED, especially A-ED. ED patients should routinely undergo serum 25(OH)D level measurement, and 25(OH)D replacement therapy is necessary for patients with low vitamin D levels.

Miscanthus, a member of the Saccharinae subtribe that includes sorghum and sugarcane, has been widely studied as a feedstock for cellulosic biofuel production. Here, we report the sequencing and assembly of the Miscanthus floridulus genome by the integration of PacBio sequencing and Hi-C mapping, resulting in a chromosome-scale, high-quality reference genome of the genus Miscanthus. Comparisons among Saccharinae genomes suggest that Sorghum split first from the common ancestor of Saccharum and Miscanthus, which subsequently diverged from each other, with two successive whole-genome duplication events occurring independently in the Saccharum genus and one whole-genome duplication occurring in the Miscanthus genus. Fusion of two chromosomes occurred during rediploidization in M. floridulus and no significant subgenome dominance was observed. A survey of cellulose synthases (CesA) in M. floridulus revealed quite high expression of most CesA genes in growing stems, which is in agreement with the high cellulose content of this species. Resequencing and comparisons of 75 Miscanthus accessions suggest that M. lutarioriparius is genetically close to M. sacchariflorus and that M. floridulus is more distantly related to other species and is more genetically diverse. This study provides a valuable genomic resource for molecular breeding and improvement of Miscanthus and Saccharinae crops., Miscanthus is widely used as a feedstock for cellulosic biofuel production. Genome sequencing shows that M. floridulus is most distantly related to other Miscanthus species and is more genetically diverse.

This study aims to investigate the role of nocturnal penile tumescence and rigidity (NPTR) and laboratory features in patients with mild, moderate and severe ED and then explored the correlation between ED severity with certain blood count parameters such as WBC and NLR. A total of 86 ED patients (age 29.8 ± 7.09 years) were enrolled. Classification of ED severity according to IIEF-5 scores was as follows: mild ED, 43.02% (37/86); moderate ED, 27.91% (24/86) and severe ED, 29.07% (25/86). Patients with moderate and severe ED had declined IIEF-5 scores and increased GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scores compared with mild ED. The mean NLR value of the mild, moderate and severe ED groups was 1.43 ± 0.39, 1.74 ± 0.45 and 2.0 ± 0.58, respectively. Stratification analysis according to NPTR results indicated that there was a significant difference in WBC and NLR between the two groups. Patients with abnormal NPTR had increased WBC and NLR levels compared with the normal groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that severe ED (OR [95% CI]: 5.736 [1.248-26.354]), WBC (OR [95% CI]: 1.676 [1.094-2.567]) and NLR (OR [95% CI]: 5.595 [1.478-21.178]) were identified as independent risk factors for severe ED (abnormal NPTR results). In conclusion, this study indicates a significant difference in NLR, PLR, PDW, MPV and HDL between the mild, moderate and severe ED groups. The WBC and NLR are significantly increased in patients with severe ED (abnormal NPTR results) and it can be available as a quick, easy and cheap investigation compared with the RigiScan to evaluate the severity of ED with good sensitivity and specificity, which is important for the diagnosis and evaluation of ED.

The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that recovery sleep could counteract the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation (SD) on male rats' fertility.Twenty-two rats were housed in groups of six per cage with unrestricted access to food and water in a room. The modified multiple platform method was used to induce SD in rats over a 96-hour period. We examined the effect of SD on semen quality, reproductive hormones, and testicular histology in adult male rats. Then, we investigated the effect of 7 days recovery sleep on impaired reproductive function induced by SD.After the acclimation period, 22 rats were randomly separated into three experimental groups (SD, recovery sleep, and the control groups). Ninety-six hours of SD resulted in a significant decrease in sperm motility (24.33±10.93In conclusion, 96 hours of SD deteriorated the parameters of sperm motility and the number of morphologically normal sperm in rats, probably due to the decrease in serum testosterone levels and the disruption of testicular tissue structure when compared to the control group. After 7 days of recovery sleep, semen parameter, especially sperm motility and testosterone levels did not return to baseline levels compared to the control group.

The primary goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the efficacy and safety of fluoxetine with other oral pharmaceuticals in the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE). We searched through databases including CNKI, PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane to find research published up to 31 March 2022. PROSPERO was used to pre-register this meta-analysis (registration number CRD42022315459). Two separate writers extracted relevant details from all of the papers included in the study. To analyse the quality of literature publishing, we used the Cochrane risk of bias tool. The severity of premature ejaculation was determined using intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT), and the effectiveness and safety of pharmacological interventions were determined using standardized mean difference (SMD) and risk ratio (RR) values with matching 95% confidence level intervals (95% CIs). Our meta-analysis includes a total of ten trials to investigate into the differences in treatment efficacy and safety between fluoxetine and other medicines. The findings revealed that fluoxetine was more effective than placebo in treating PE, whereas sertraline and paroxetine were more effective than fluoxetine (p 0.05). The side effects of the medications were not significantly different, and they were all acceptable. The results of the sensitivity analysis were unaffected by the removal of any of the articles. There was no evidence of bias in the media. This meta-analysis examined the differences in efficacy and safety between fluoxetine and other oral medications and can be used by clinicians in the treatment of PE.

Several hematologic parameters have been shown to be strongly associated with cardiovascular disease, yet few studies were conducted to assess their relationship with atherogenic erectile dysfunction.To find out the differences in hematological parameters between patients with atherogenic erectile dysfunction and healthy controls through as comprehensive a hematological examination as possible and try to assess and predict atherogenic erectile dysfunction using possible indicators.We collected hematological parameters in detail from 105 healthy controls and 183 patients with erectile dysfunction (119 patients with atherogenic erectile dysfunction patients and 64 patients with venous erectile dysfunction) who were selected by nocturnal penile tumescence and rigidity and color duplex doppler ultrasound.Statistically significant differences were found between the atherogenic erectile dysfunction and venous erectile dysfunction groups in platelet to lymphocyte ratio, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, and mean platelet volume (all p lt; 0.01). When comparing atherogenic erectile dysfunction with the healthy population, we found statistically significant differences between the two groups in white blood cell, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, platelet to lymphocyte ratio, mean platelet volume, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, platelet to lymphocyte ratio, mean platelet volume, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, p lt; 0.01; white blood cell, p = 0.024; non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, p = 0.036). Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis showed that neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio had the highest diagnostic value (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio: area under the curve = 0.810, p lt; 0.001, cut-off = 1.995; platelet to lymphocyte ratio: area under the curve = 0.782, p lt; 0.001, cut-off = 126.3).Several hematological parameters (white blood cell, platelet to lymphocyte ratio, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, mean platelet volume, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) can be considered markers of atherogenic erectile dysfunction, while these parameters were not significantly different in venous erectile dysfunction compared to healthy subjects. This suggests that hematological examinations may be a convenient and effective method to help evaluate and diagnose atherogenic erectile dysfunction.

Evolution is driven by various mechanisms. A directional increase in the embryo to endosperm ratio is an evolutionary trend within the angiosperms. The endosperm constitutes a major portion of the seed volume in Poales and some dicots. However, in other dicots such as Arabidopsis and soybean, the endosperm proliferates early, followed by embryo growth to replace the endosperm. The Arabidopsis leucine-rich repeat receptor protein kinase AtHAIKU2 (AtIKU2) is a key regulator of early endosperm proliferation. In this study, we found that IKU2s from Brachypodium, rice, and soybean can complement the abnormal seed developmental phenotype of Atiku2, while AtIKU2 also rescues the defective endosperm proliferation in the Brachypodium BdIKU2 knockout mutant seeds. AtIKU2 and soybean GmIKU2 are actively expressed a few days after fertilization. Thereafter, expression of AtIKU2 is suppressed by the FIS-PRC2 complex-mediated H3K27me3. The soybean GmIKU2 locus is also enriched with H3K27me3 marks. The histone methyltransferase AtMEA is unique to Brassicaceae, but one GmSWN in soybean plays a similar role in seed development as AtMEA. By contrast, the BdIKU2 and rice OsIKU2 loci are continuously expressed and are devoid of H3K27me3 marks. Taken together, these results suggest that IKU2 genes retain an ancestral function, but the duration of their expression that is controlled by PRC2-mediated epigenetic silencing contributes to silenced or persistent endosperm proliferation in different species. Our study reveals an epigenetic mechanism that drives the development of vastly different seed ontogenies.

Background Although temperament-character traits and attitudes toward premature ejaculation (PE) are known to be associated with PE, it is of great significance to study them in PE. Moreover, few studies have evaluated these traits and attitudes in the new classification of 4 subtypes of PE. Aim We investigated the temperament-character traits and attitudes toward PE in 4 types of PE and their associations with PE. Methods Between December 2018 and December 2019, we conducted a survey in our hospital, and enrolled 350 men who complained of PE and 252 men without any complaint of PE. Temperament-character traits and attitudes toward PE were independently assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised and several targeted questions, respectively. The Index of Premature Ejaculation (IPE) was used to evaluate ejaculation control, sexual life satisfaction, and distress caused by PE. Outcomes The outcomes included differences of temperament-character traits and attitudes toward PE among 2 groups and their associations with PE. Results Of the 2 groups, men with PE complaints had lower novelty seeking/self-transcendence (NS/ST) scores and higher harm avoidance (HA) scores vs men without any complaints of PE. Among the 4 types of PE, men with variable PE had the highest score of HA and lowest score of NS; the lowest score of ST was recorded in men with lifelong PE. Additionally, the total and subdomain scores of IPE in men with subjective PE were higher than the other subtypes of PE. After adjusting for age, positive correlations were observed in HA score and total and subdomain scores of IPE, whereas the inverse was true corresponding to NS and ST. Clinical Implications The current study has provided a new perspective for understanding the impact of psychological factors on PE. Strengths & Limitations This is the first study to systematically assess the effects of personality traits and attitudes on PE, especially among the 4 types of PE. The main drawback is that the generalizability of this study may be limited by the fact that it was conducted in a single cultural/societal background. Conclusion Men who complained of PE tended to react with indifference or rejection to novelty, tended to feel unsatisfied, cannot effectively adapt to changes in the surrounding environment, and tended to avoid situations involving risk. These characteristics could lead to their becoming disheartened when faced with PE. Furthermore, the attitude of men with PE reflects the needs of the patient during treatment from one aspect. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare sarcoma with unique molecular characteristics. It also has typical fasciitis-like, dense spindle cells and hypocellular fibrous histologic patterns and can occur at any age. The etiology of IMT is unknown and a complete treatment and monitoring plan for IMT have not been developed. We have found a rare case about a huge recurrent IMT implicating renal and ureter. The patient was accompanied by a history of a lesion sized 15.5 cm × 11.5 cm × 10.5 cm as a retroperitoneal IMT, and the first tumor resection was performed 12 months ago. The patient, who suffered from tumor recurrence within 1 year and whose recurrent tumor also invaded into the renal parenchymal was given a retroperitoneal neoplasm resection plus right nephrectomy. In order to clarify the pathological features, the histological specimens of recurrent retroperitoneal IMT were examined as well as primary retroperitoneal IMT, and immunohistochemical (IHC) stains showed that the spindle cells were positive for vimentin and negative for anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK). At 24 months follow-up, the patient recovered well and there was no evidence of tumor recurrence. This case report is conducive to understanding this rare tumor. When conditions permit, complete surgical resection is the recommended treatment for primary and recurrent IMT.

Objective: To compare the efficacy, advantages and disadvantages of insertable ureteral reimplantation (UC group) and ureteral end-to-side anastomosis (UU group) in the treatment of duplicate kidney, and summarize the clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment. Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on 20 cases of duplicate kidney in our hospital from April 2016 to June 2021, including 11 cases of insertable ureteral reimplantation and 9 cases of end-to-side ureteral anastomosis. There were 8 boys, 12 girls, 12 left and 8 right. There were 3 cases of urinary tract infection and 9 cases of urinary incontinence, all of the rest were found by B ultrasound in physical examination. The median age was 33.5 months. Preoperative and postoperative renal pelvis separation, ureteral dilation, operation time and drainage tube indwelling time were compared. Results: There was no significant difference in the degree of renal pelvis separation and ureter tortuosity before operation between the two groups (P > 0.05), and there was significant difference in the operative time between the two types of operation and in the duration of indwelling drainage tube (P < 0.05), there were significant differences in the degree of hydronephrosis and ureteral dilation before and after the two operations (P < 0.05), while there were no significant differences in the recovery of kidney and ureter after the two operations (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The two methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, both can be used as the choice of renal sparing therapy for complete duplicate kidney, it is necessary to choose the appropriate method according to the situation of children and the surgical experience of the doctors. Double J tube placement is helpful for finding and avioding to damage the duplicate ureter intraoperative, without increasing the difficulty of operation, and can prevent anastomosis or ureteral orifice stenosis.

Numerous studies conducted to study the role of testosterone in erectile dysfunction (ED) extensively, but less is known of the association between estradiol level and ED. To assess the strong association between estradiol and ED by quantitatively synthesizing all studies evaluating the relationship between estradiol and ED. An extensive literature search was conducted by two authors independently in three electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library, up to January 10, 2021. The Patient Population or Problem, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes and Setting (PICOS) were used for inclusion criteria to identify studies. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was applied to assess the quality of studies. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were used to compare the estradiol level between ED patients and healthy subjects, and the pooled OR and 95%CI were used to evaluate the strong association between estradiol level and ED. Finally, six studies were included in this meta-analysis, satisfying predefined inclusion criteria. Five studies were considered to be high quality, and only one was judged of moderate quality. The estradiol level of ED patients was statistically higher than that in healthy subjects (SMD 0.45, 95%CI 0.28-0.63, p0.0001). The pooled OR demonstrated that the estradiol was correlated to the ED significantly (OR 1.08, 95%CI 1.05-1.12, p0.0001). Subgroup analyses were conducted based on age, diagnosis way, country, sample size, detection method and estradiol level. There was no substantial change in the result of SMD ranging from 0.41 (95% CI 0.31-0.51) to 0.53 (95% CI 0.44-0.62) when performing sensitivity analysis. No publication bias was detected by the Begg test or Egger test. This meta-analysis demonstrated that the estradiol level is correlated to ED significantly.

The heavy metal cadmium is believed to be one of the environmental endocrine disruptors of spermatogenesis. Cadmium-induced inhibition of spermatogenesis is associated with hormone secretion disorder. Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor that can raise peripheral androgen levels and stimulate spermatogenesis. However, the potential protective effects of letrozole against cadmium-induced reproductive toxicity remain to be elucidated. In this study, male mice were administered CdCl2 (4 mg/kg BW) orally by gavage alone or in combination with letrozole (0.25 mg/kg BW) for 30 days. Cd exposure caused a significant decrease in body weight, sperm count, motility, vitality and plasma testosterone levels. Histopathological changes revealed extensive vacuolization and decreased spermatozoa in the lumen. However, in the Cd+letrozole group, letrozole treatment compensated for deficits in sperm parameters (count, motility, and vitality) induced by Cd. Letrozole treatment significantly increased serum testosterone levels, which were reduced by Cd. Histopathological studies revealed a systematic array of all germ cells, a preserved basement membrane and relatively less vacuolization. For mechanistic exploration, RNA-seq was used to profile alterations in gene expression in response to letrozole. Compared with that in the Cd-treated group, RNA-Seq analysis showed that 214 genes were differentially expressed in the presence of letrozole. Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis and KEGG signaling pathway analysis showed that steroid biosynthetic processes were the processes most affected by letrozole treatment. Furthermore, we found that the expression of the testosterone synthesis-related genes LHCGR (luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor) and Hsd3b6 (3 beta- and steroid delta-isomerase 6) was significantly downregulated in Cd‐induced testes, but in letrozole-treated testes, these genes maintained similar expression levels as the control group. However, the transcription levels of inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β and IL-6, and oxidative stress-related genes (Nrf2, Nqo1, and Ho-1) showed no changes. The present study suggests that the protective potential of letrozole against Cd-induced reproductive toxicity might be due to upregulation of LHCGR and Hsd3b6, which could beneficially increase testosterone synthesis to achieve optimum protection in sperm quality and spermatogenesis.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pollution has been considered as one of the most significant emerging environmental and health challenges in the 21st century, many efforts have been paid to control the proliferation and dissemination of ARGs in the environment. Among them, the biochar performs a positive effect in reducing the abundance of ARGs during different environmental governance processes and has shown great application prospects in controlling the ARGs. Although there are increasing studies on employing biochar to control ARGs, there is still a lack of review paper on this hotspot. In this review, firstly, the applications of biochar to control ARGs in different environmental governance processes were summarized. Secondly, the processes and mechanisms of ARGs removal promoted by biochar were proposed and discussed. Then, the effects of biochar properties on ARGs removal were highlighted. Finally, the future prospects and challenges of using biochar to control ARGs were proposed. It is hoped that this review could provide some new guidance for the further research of this field.

Ejaculation is a complex biphasic process involving a series of neurophysiological activities, such as the contraction of a large number of muscle groups and the ejaculation of semen from the urethra anterior. Due to the complexity of the process, many related factors have not been fully clarified, resulting in ejaculation dysfunction. As a common ejaculation dysfunction, lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) is a problem for many people. Notably, gene polymorphism might play an important role in the etiology of LPE. However, the quest for identifying the actual genetic loci that contribute to LPE etiology has not been successful. Due to discrepancies in the design and methods of research, the correlation of most reports was not obtained in subjective replication experiments, and the conclusions may be inconsistent. In our study, three groups of ejaculation rats, namely, “rapid, normal, and delayed,” were selected based on the animal model of premature ejaculation (PE) in rats and the theory of ejaculation. Among them, the rats in the “rapid” ejaculation group can be used to stimulate humans with PE. Subsequently, we used the rat brain tissue for whole-transcriptome sequencing to screen the differential genes among the three groups. We tried to identify the actual genetic loci that contribute to PE etiology and provide a theoretical basis for the targeted therapy of PE.

This work has focused on the improvement of the sound absorption properties of multilayered structure. Nonwoven fabrics with three different thickness were used to fabricate multilayered absorber. Polyethylene membrane was then incorporated into the multilayered structure with different combinations. The acoustic measurement indicated that polyethylene membrane can improve the sound absorption properties when the thickness of nonwoven fabric is 1.01 mm and 2.38 mm respectively. However, the incorporation of polyethylene membrane will decrease the sound absorption coefficients when the thickness of nonwoven fabric is 3.41 mm. This study has indicated that the thickness of nonwoven fabric and the layer stacking sequence should be focused on consideration to prepare multilayered sound absorber.

OBJECTIVES To explore the feasibility of shear wave elastography (SWE) in the evaluation of arterial erectile dysfunction (ED). METHODS From November 2018 to November 2019, 26 patients with arterial ED and 30 patients with non-vascular ED were prospectively included. SWE values of corpus cavernosum penis (CCP) and the flow velocity of cavernous artery for all patients in both before intracavernous injection (ICI) (flaccid state) and after ICI (erectile state) were measured. Performance of SWE value in assessing arterial ED was studied. Correlation between SWE value of CCP and the age of patients was also investigated. Duck hepatitis A virus (DHAV) causes a highly contagious and acute disease in ducklings younger than 3 weeks of age and spreads rapidly by horizontal transmission to all susceptible ducklings in the flock. To date, there is no evidence of vertical transmission of DHAV-1. In a previous study, we identified a novel DHAV type 1 (DHAV-1) isolate that could infect adult ducks and induce laying drop. In this study, 30 non-embryonated duck eggs and 60 17-day-old embryos were collected from three breeding duck flocks with egg drop syndrome caused by DHAV-1 in China, and 30 17-day-old embryos were randomly selected from the 60 embryos and allowed to hatch. DHAV-1 RNA was detected by RT-PCR in 10 of 30 non-embryonated eggs, 9 of 30 17-day-old embryos, 5 of 7 dead embryos and 5 of 23 newly hatched ducklings. Overall, 29 of 90 (32.2%) eggs and embryos were positive for DHAV-1. Three DHAV-1 strains were isolated from the dead duck embryos of the three breeding duck flocks, respectively. Pathogenicity studies showed that the three DHAV-1 isolates had median embryo lethal doses but were highly pathogenic to healthy ducklings. Compared with the DHAV reference strains, there were two specific amino acid mutation sites (F169 and S220 ) in VP1 of the three isolates. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that DHAV-1 is isolated from duck embryos. The findings provide evidence of possible vertical transmission of DHAV-1 from breeding ducks to ducklings.

Background Lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) has been linked to altered brain function and structure. Although the middle temporal gyrus (MTG) is consistently more affected in LPE, its functional and structural changes have yet to be determined at the subregional level. Aim To explore the functional and structural changes of MTG in LPE at the subregional level based on a combined analysis of multimodal magnetic resonance imaging data. Methods 25 patients with LPE and 21 healthy controls underwent resting-state functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging scans. The MTG was parcellated into the anterior part of the MTG (aMTG), middle part of the MTG, posterior part of the MTG, and sulcus part of the MTG. Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and gray matter volume (GMV) of each MTG subregion were calculated and compared between the 2 groups. Outcomes The functional and structural changes of MTG at the subregional level were assessed in patients with LPE and controls, as well as the correlation of them with premature ejaculation diagnostic tool and Beck Depression Inventory. Results Despite similar rsFC patterns of each MTG subregion in both groups, quantitative comparison analyses revealed that patients with LPE showed increased rsFC between the left aMTG and the right cuneus (0.34 ± 0.12 vs 0.17 ± 0.17), between the right aMTG and the right parahippocampal gyrus (0.36 ± 0.16 vs 0.15 ± 0.10), and between the right middle MTG and the left MTG (0.40 ± 0.14 vs 0.18 ± 0.15) relative to controls (P .05, Bonferroni corrected). In addition, no significant correlations between rsFC and GMV of the MTG subregions and the clinical variables were found in patients with LPE (P > .05, Bonferroni corrected). Clinical Implications Functional hyperconnectivity in the MTG subregions may facilitate a more sophisticated understanding of the neuropathological mechanism underlying LPE. Strengths and Limitations There are no previous studies examining functional and structural changes in LPE at the MTG subregional level. The main limitation is the small sample size. Conclusions We present evidence that individuals with LPE have a selective functional hyperconnectivity yet preserved structural integrity in the MTG subregions, which may facilitate a more sophisticated understanding of the neuropathological mechanism underlying LPE by highlighting the critical role of the MTG in this disorder.
