We are developing transition-edge sensor microcalorimeters for the X-ray integral field unit (X-IFU) on-board ESA’s Athena space telescope. These detectors will be read out using time-domain multiplexing. Due to the limitations on bandwidth and dynamic range of the readout, the optimally filtered pulse heights of the measured X-ray signals suffer from a nonlinear variation with the exact photon arrival time relative to the sampling points. The shape and magnitude of this variation depend on the photon energy. We describe a method to characterize this energy-dependent variation with few parameters, which can then be interpolated to correct event energies across the whole spectrum. We implement our method on measurements from 200 pixels in a prototype X-IFU kilo-pixel array readout using 8-column × 32-row TDM. We show that the interpolation errors between calibration points, over the energy range 4–12 keV, can be made sufficiently small that they do not adversely impact the measured energy resolution across the full spectral range.

We are concerned with improving the diagnostic potential of the K lines and edges of elements with low cosmic abundances that are observed in the X-ray spectra of supernova remnants, galaxy clusters and accreting black holes and neutron stars. Since accurate photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections are needed in their spectral models, they have been computed for isoelectronic sequences with electron number $12\leq N\leq 18$ using a multi-channel method. Target representations are obtained with the atomic structure code AUTOSTRUCTURE, and ground-state cross sections are computed with the Breit--Pauli $R$-matrix method (BPRM) in intermediate coupling, including damping (radiative and Auger) effects. The contributions from channels associated with the 2s-hole $[2{\rm s}]\mu$ target configurations and those containing 3d orbitals are studied in the Mg and Ar isoelectronic sequences. Cross sections for the latter ions are also calculated in the isolated-resonance approximation as implemented in AUTOSTRUCTURE and compared with BPRM to test their accuracy. It is confirmed that the collisional channels associated with the $[2{\rm s}]\mu$ target configurations must be taken into account owing to significant increases in the monotonic background cross section between the L and K edges. Target configurations with 3d orbitals give rise to fairly conspicuous unresolved transition arrays in the L-edge region, but to a much lesser extent in the K-edge which is our main concern; therefore, they have been neglected throughout owing to their computationally intractable channel inventory, thus allowing the computation of cross sections for all the ions with $12\leq N\leq 18$ in intermediate coupling with BPRM. [Abridged] Investigations of neutron(n)-capture element nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution have largely been based on stellar spectroscopy. However, the recent detection of these elements in several planetary nebulae (PNe) indicates that nebular spectroscopy is a promising new tool for such studies. In PNe, n-capture element abundance determinations reveal details of s-process nucleosynthesis and convective mixing in evolved low-mass stars, as well as the chemical evolution of elements that cannot be detected in stellar spectra. Only one or two ions of a given trans-iron element can typically be detected in individual nebulae. Elemental abundance determinations thus require corrections for the abundances of unobserved ions. Such corrections rely on the availability of atomic data for processes that control the ionization equilibrium of nebulae. Until recently, these data were unknown for virtually all n-capture element ions. For the first five ions of Se, Kr, and Xe -- the three most widely detected n-capture elements in PNe -- we are calculating photoionization cross sections and radiative and dielectronic recombination rate coefficients using the multi-configuration Breit-Pauli atomic structure code AUTOSTRUCTURE. Charge transfer rate coefficients are being determined with a multichannel Landau-Zener code. To calibrate these calculations, we have measured absolute photoionization cross sections of Se and Xe ions at the Advanced Light Source synchrotron radiation facility. These atomic data can be incorporated into photoionization codes, which we will use to derive ionization corrections (hence abundances) for Se, Kr, and Xe in ionized nebulae. We present results for electron-impact excitation of F-like Fe calculated using R-matrix theory where an intermediate-coupling frame transformation (ICFT) is used to obtain level-resolved collision strengths. Two such calculations are performed, the first expands the target using 2s2 2p5, 2s 2p6, 2s2 2p4 3l, 2s 2p5 3l, and 2p6 3l configurations while the second calculation includes the 2s2 2p4 4l, 2s 2p5 4l, and 2p6 4l configurations as well. The effect of the additional structure in the latter calculation on the n=3 resonances is explored and compared with previous calculations. We find strong resonant enhancement of the effective collision strengths to the 2s2 2p4 3s levels. A comparison with a Chandra X-ray observation of Capella shows that the n=4 R-matrix calculation leads to good agreement with observation
