The intermetallic compound Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$, an antiferromagnetic material with nonsymmorphic crystalline structure, is investigated by magnetic, electronic transport and specific heat measurements. Being a Zintl phase, insulating behavior is expected. Our thermodynamic and magnetotransport measurements along different crystallographic directions strongly indicate polaron formation well above the magnetic ordering temperatures. Pronounced anisotropies of the magnetic and transport properties even above the magnetic ordering temperature are observed despite the Eu$^{2+}$ configuration which testify to complex and competing magnetic interactions between these ions and give rise to intricate phase diagrams discussed in detail. Background: Few studies address the appropriate duration of post-surgical antibiotic therapy for orthopedic infections; with or without infected residual implants. We perform two similar randomized-clinical trials (RCT) to reduce the antibiotic use and associated adverse events. Methods: Two unblinded RCTs in adult patients (non-inferiority with a margin of 10%, a power of 80%) with the primary outcomes "remission" and "microbiologically-identical recurrences" after a combined surgical and antibiotic therapy. The main secondary outcome are antibiotic-related adverse events. The RCTs allocate the participants between 3 vs. 6 weeks of post-surgical systemic antibiotic therapy for implant-free infections; and between 6 vs. 12 weeks for residual implant-related infections. We need a total of 280 episodes (randomization schemes 1:1) with a minimal follow-up 12 months. We perform two interim analyses starting approximately after 1 and 2 years. The study approximatively lasts 3 years. Discussion: Both parellel RCT will enable to prescribe less antibiotics for future orthopedic infections in adult patients. We performed Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STM/STS) measurements to investigate the Zintl phase Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$, a non-symmorphic antiferromagnet. The theoretical prediction of a non-trivial Fermi surface topology stabilized by the non-symmorphic symmetry motivated our research. On the cleaved (010) plane, we obtained striped patterns that can be correlated to the stacking of the [In$_2$Sb$_6$]$^{10-}$ double chains along the crystallographic $c$ axis. The attempted cleavage along the $a$ axis revealed a more complex pattern. We combined the STS measurement on non-reconstructed (010) and (081) surfaces with DFT calculations to further elucidate the electronic structure of Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$. From our investigations so far, direct experimental evidence of the predicted topological surface states remains elusive.

Flooding is a pervasive natural hazard���costly in both human and economic terms���and climate change will probably exacer- bate risks around the world. Mountainous areas, such as the densely populated European Alps, are of particular concern as topography and atmospheric conditions can result in large and sudden floods. In addition, the Alps are experiencing a high warming rate, which is probably leading to more heavy rainfall events. Here, we compile palaeoflood records to test the still uncertain impact these climatic trends might have on flood frequency and magnitude in the European Alps. We demonstrate that a warming of 0.5���1.2 ��C, whether naturally or anthropogenically forced, led to a 25���50% decrease in the frequency of large (���10 yr return period) floods. This decreasing trend is not conclusive in records covering less than 200 years but persistent in those ranging from 200 to 9,000 years. By contrast, extreme (>100 yr) floods may increase with a similar degree of warming in certain small alpine catchments impacted by local intensification of extreme rainfall. Our results show how long, continuous palaeoflood records can be used to disentangle complex climate���flooding relationships and assist in improving risk assessment and management at a regional scale.

The interplay between non-trivial topological states of matter and strong electronic correlations is one of the most compelling open questions in condensed matter physics. Due to experimental challenges, there is an increasing desire to find more microscopic techniques to complement the results of more traditional experiments. In this work, we locally explore the Kondo insulator Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$ by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) of Gd$^{3+}$ ions at low temperatures. Our analysis reveals that the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape shows an anomalous evolution as a function of temperature, wherein for highly dilute samples (x $\approx$ 0.0002) the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape changes from a localized ESR local moment character to a diffusive-like character. Upon manipulating the sample surface with a focused ion beam we demonstrate, in combination with electrical resistivity measurements, that the localized character of the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape is recovered by increasing the penetration of the microwave in the sample. This provides compelling evidence for the contribution of surface or near-surface excitations to the relaxation mechanism in the Gd$^{3+}$ spin dynamics. We show that the resistivity plateau of SmB$_6$ at low temperature, typically taken as a hallmark of its conducting surface state, can systematically be influenced by different surface treatments. We investigate the effect of inflicting an increasing number of hand-made scratches and microscopically defined focused ion beam-cut trenches on the surfaces of flux-grown Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$B$_6$ with $x =$ 0, 0.0002. Both treatments increase the resistance of the low-temperature plateau, whereas the bulk resistance at higher temperature largely remains unaffected. Notably, the temperature at which the resistance deviates from the thermally activated behavior decreases with cumulative surface damage. These features are more pronounced for the focused ion beam treated samples, with the difference likely being related to the absence of microscopic defects like subsurface cracks. A fully FM polarized state is obtained above the saturation field of H⊥S = 23.7~T at 2~K with a magnetization of Ms = 2.8~μB/Cr. For H || c, M(H) monotonously increases and saturates at the same Ms value at HIIS = 25.1~T at 4.2~K. Above TN, the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate signatures of two dimensional (2D) frustration related to the presence of planar ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. We found a pronounced nearly isotropic maximum in both properties at about T* = 45~K, which is a clear fingerprint of short-range correlations and emergent spin fluctuations. Calculations based on a planar 2D Heisenberg model support our experimental findings and suggest a predominant FM exchange among nearest and AFM exchange among third-nearest neighbors. Only a minor contribution might be assigned to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction possible related to the non-centrosymmetric polar space group R3m. Due to these competing interactions, the magnetism in AgCrSe2, in contrast to the oxygen based delafossites, can be tuned by relatively small, experimentally accessible, magnetic fields, allowing us to establish the complete anisotropic magnetic H-T phase diagram in detail. Single crystals of the hexagonal triangular lattice compound AgCrSe2 have been grown by chemical vapor transport. The crystals have been carefully characterized and studied by magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, and thermal expansion. In addition, we used Cr-electron spin resonance and neutron diffraction to probe the Cr 3d3 magnetism microscopically. To obtain the electronic density of states, we employed x-ray absorption and resonant photoemission spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations. Our studies evidence an anisotropic magnetic order below TN = 32 K. An appropriate antibiotherapy is crucial for the safety and recovery of patients. Depending on the clinical conditions of patients, the required dose to effectively eradicate an infection may vary. An inadequate dosing not only reduces the efficacy of the antibiotic, but also promotes the emergence of antimicrobial resistances. Therefore, a personalized therapy is of great interest for improved patients’ outcome and will reduce in long-term the prevalence of multidrug-resistances. In this context, on-site monitoring of the antibiotic blood concentration is fundamental to facilitate an individual adjustment of the antibiotherapy. Herein, we present a bioinspired approach for the bedside monitoring of free accessible ß-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins (piperacillin) and cephalosporins (cefuroxime and cefazolin) in untreated plasma samples. The introduced system combines a disposable microfluidic chip with a naturally occurring penicillin-binding protein, resulting in a high-performance platform, capable of gauging very low antibiotic concentrations (less than 6 ng ml−1) from only 1 µl of serum. The system’s applicability to a personalized antibiotherapy was successfully demonstrated by monitoring the pharmacokinetics of patients, treated with ß-lactam antibiotics, undergoing surgery.

A detailed experimental investigation of Fe1+yTe (y = 0.11, 0.12) using pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T confirms remarkable magnetic shape-memory (MSM) effects. These effects result from magnetoelastic transformation processes in the low-temperature antiferromagnetic state of these materials. The observation of modulated and finely twinned microstructure at the nanoscale through scanning tunneling microscopy establishes a behavior similar to that of thermoelastic martensite. We identified the observed, elegant hierarchical twinning pattern of monoclinic crystallographic domains as an ideal realization of crossing twin bands. The antiferromagnetism of the monoclinic ground state allows for a magnetic-field–induced reorientation of these twin variants by the motion of one type of twin boundaries. At sufficiently high magnetic fields, we observed a second isothermal transformation process with large hysteresis for different directions of applied field. This gives rise to a second MSM effect caused by a phase transition back to the field-polarized tetragonal lattice state.

Gallium nitride (GaN) has emerged as an essential semiconductor material for energy-efficient lighting and electronic applications owing to its large direct bandgap of 3.4 eV. Present GaN/AlGaN heterostructures seemingly feature an inherently existing, highly-mobile 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), which results in normally-on transistor characteristics. Here we report on an ultra-pure GaN/AlGaN layer stack grown by molecular beam epitaxy, in which such a 2DEG is absent at 300 K in the dark, a property previously not demonstrated. Illumination with ultra-violet light however, generates a 2DEG at the GaN/AlGaN interface and the heterostructure becomes electrically conductive. At temperatures below 150 K this photo-conductivity is persistent with an insignificant dependence of the 2D channel density on the optical excitation power. Residual donor impurity concentrations below 10$^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$ in the GaN/AlGaN layer stack are one necessity for our observations. Knowledge of past natural flood variability and controlling climate factors is of high value since it can be useful to refine projections of the future flood behavior under climate warming. In this context we present a seasonally resolved 2000 year long flood frequency and intensity reconstruction from the southern Alpine slope (North Italy) using annually laminated (varved) lake sediments. Floods occurred predominantly during summer and autumn whereas winter and spring events were rare. The all season flood frequency and particularly the occurrence of summer events increased during solar minima suggesting solar induced circulation changes resembling negative conditions of the North Atlantic Oscillation as controlling atmospheric mechanism. Furthermore the most extreme autumn events occurred during a period of warm Mediterranean sea surface temperature. Interpreting these results in regard to present climate change our data set proposes for a warming scenario a decrease in summer floods but an increase in the intensity of autumn floods at the South Alpine slope.

The reaction p p → p p ω was investigated with the TOF spectrometer, which is an external experiment at the accelerator COSY (Forschungszentrum Julich, Germany). Total as well as differential cross sections were determined at an excess energy of 93 MeV ( p beam = 2950 MeV / c ). Using the total cross section of ( 9.0 ± 0.7 ± 1.1 ) μb for the reaction p p → p p ω determined here and existing data for the reaction p p → p p ϕ , the ratio R ϕ / ω = σ ϕ / σ ω turns out to be significantly larger than expected by the Okubo–Zweig–Iizuka (OZI) rule. The uncertainty of this ratio is considerably smaller than in previous determinations. The differential distributions show that the ω production is still dominated by S-wave production at this excess energy, however higher partial waves clearly contribute. A comparison of the measured angular distributions for ω production to published distributions for ϕ production at 83 MeV shows that the data are consistent with an identical production mechanism for both vector mesons.

SmB$_6$, a so called Kondo insulator, is recently discussed as a candidate material for a strong topological insulator. We present detailed atomically resolved topographic information on the (001) surface from more than a dozen SmB$_6$ samples. Atomically flat, {\it in situ} cleaved surfaces often exhibit B- and Sm-terminated surfaces as well as reconstructed and non-reconstructed areas {\it coexisting} on different length scales. The terminations are unambiguously identified. In addition, electronic inhomogeneities are observed which likely result from the polar nature of the (001) surface and may indicate an inhomogeneous Sm valence at the surface of SmB$_6$. Narrow Xi-pi+- and Xi-bar+pi+- resonances produced by quasi-real photons have been searched for by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The study was stimulated by the recent observation of an exotic baryonic state decaying into Xi-pi-, at a mass of 1862 MeV, interpreted as a pentaquark. While the ordinary hyperon states Xi(1530)^0 and Xi-bar(1530)^0 are clearly seen, no exotic baryon is observed in the data taken in 2002 and 2003., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

For any thorough investigation of complex physical properties, as encountered in strongly correlated electron systems, not only single crystals of highest quality but also a detailed knowledge of the structural properties of the material are pivotal prerequisites. Here, we combine physical and chemical investigations on the prototypical heavy fermion superconductors CeIrIn5 and CeCoIn5 on atomic and macroscopic length scale to gain insight into their precise structural properties. Our approach spans from enhanced resolution X-ray diffraction experiments to atomic resolution by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and reveal a certain type of local features (coexistence of minority and majority structural patterns) in the tetragonal HoCoGa 5-type structure of both compounds.

Hybridization between conduction electrons and the strongly interacting f-electrons in rare earth or actinide compounds may result in new states of matter. Depending on the exact location of the concomitant hybridization gapwith respect to the Fermi energy, a heavy fermion or an insulating ground state ensues. To study this entanglement locally, we conducted scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STS) measurements on the "Kondo insulator" SmB6. The vast majority of surface areas investigated were reconstructed, but infrequently, patches of varying sizes of nonreconstructed Smor B-terminated surfaces also were found. On the smallest patches, clear indications for the hybridization gap with logarithmic temperature dependence (as expected for a Kondo system) and for intermultiplet transitions were observed. On nonreconstructed surface areas large enough for coherent cotunneling, we were able to observe clear-cut Fano resonances. Our locally resolved STS indicated considerable finite conductance on all surfaces independent of their structure, not proving but leaving open the possibility of the existence of a topologically protected surface state.

BACKGROUND: Whereas cases of unilateral obstetric brachial plexus paralysis have been sufficiently described and discussed in the literature cases of bilateral obstetric brachial plexus paralysis are extremely rare and so far have not been mentioned and discussed satisfactorily. PATIENTS: We present a case of bilateral obstetric brachial plexus paralysis in an 8-months-old white boy. We performed a neurotisation of the Nervus suprascapularis with the Nervus accessorius and an Oberlin procedure on both sides in two operative steps. RESULTS: In an early follow-up 6 months after the second operation and intensive physiotherapy the little patient was able to crawl with the active help of both arms. CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral obstetric brachial plexus paralysis is a very rare incidence in infants. An interdisciplinary approach including paediatrics, plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, radiologists and physiotherapists is essential for the success of treatment strategies in such cases.

We present a determination of the gluon polarization DeltaG/G in the nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events, Q2 < 1 (GeV/c)2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6LiD target. The helicity asymmetry for the selected events is A/D = 0.002 ± 0.019(stat) ± 0.003(syst). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis DeltaG/G = 0.024 ± 0.089(stat) ± 0.057(syst) at xg = 0.095 and μ2 ~ 3 (GeV/c)2.

The 4f crystal-electric field ground state wave functions of CeRh(1-x)Ir(x)In5 have been determined by linear polarization dependent soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at T = 8 K. We demonstrate that these ground state wave functions correlate with the phase diagram of the substitution series, which covers long-range antiferromagnetic order, unconventional superconductivity, and coexistence of these two states. We discuss how certain wave functions could affect magnetic order and anisotropic hybridization, facilitating the formation of a superconducting ground state at low temperatures.

We investigate the magnetic field dependent thermopower, thermal conductivity, resistivity and Hall effect in the heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2. In contrast to reports on thermodynamic measurements, we find in total three transitions at high fields, rather than a single one at 10 T. Using the Mott formula together with renormalized band calculations, we identify Lifshitz transitions as their origin. The predictions of the calculations show that all experimental results rely on an interplay of a smooth suppression of the Kondo effect and the spin splitting of the flat hybridized bands., 5 pages, 4 figures

We study the effect of magnetic fields up to 15 T on the heavy fermion state of YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ via Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements down to 50 mK. Our data show anomalies at three different characteristic fields. We compare our data to renormalized band structure calculations through which we identify Lifshitz transitions associated with the heavy fermion bands. The Hall measurements indicate that the de-renormalization of the quasiparticles, {\it i.e} the destruction of the local Kondo singlets, occurs smoothly while the Lifshitz transitions occur within rather confined regions of the magnetic field., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the temperature-induced phase transitions in Fe1.08Te in the pressure range 0-3 GPa using synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction (XRD). The results reveal a plethora of phase transitions. At ambient pressure, Fe1.08Te undergoes simultaneous first-order structural symmetry-breaking and magnetic phase transitions, namely from the paramagnetic tetragonal (P4/nmm) to the antiferromagnetic monoclinic (P2_1/m) phase. We show that, at a pressure of 1.33 GPa, the low temperature structure adopts an orthorhombic symmetry. More importantly, for pressures of 2.29 GPa and higher, a symmetry-conserving tetragonal-tetragonal phase transition has been identified from a change in the c/a ratio of the lattice parameters. Die HIV-Infektion ist eines der Hauptgesundheitsprobleme in Sub-Sahara Afrika. Inhalt der Arbeit ist es, das HIV-Behandlungsprogramm der Klinik „Centre de Santé de Maingara“ in Sarh/Tschad darzustellen. Es wurde untersucht, welche Effekte die antiretrovirale Therapie auf den Krankheitsverlauf der Patienten hat. Es zeigt sich, dass die Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit während des ersten halben Jahres nach der Aufnahme bzw. nach Beginn der antiretroviralen Therapie am stärksten sinkt. Sie unterscheidet sich signifikant nach dem Geschlecht und dem WHO-Stadium bei der Aufnahme. Überraschend ist das Ergebnis, dass Patienten, die ihre antiretrovirale Therapie unterbrechen, eine höhere Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit haben als therapieadhärente Patienten. Durchfall, Fieber und Gewichtsverlust sind die häufigsten auftretenden klinischen Ereignisse. Unter antiretroviraler Therapie treten insgesamt weniger Symptome und Infektionen auf und die CD4-Zellzahl und das Gewicht steigen an.

Aus der Entwicklung zur "vernetzten, wandlungsfähigen, ressourceneffizienten Fabrik" ergeben sich einige Konsequenzen. Sie betreffen die Definition von Fabrik, Fabrikplanung und Fabrikbetrieb, die Stellung des Menschen in der Fabrik unter besonderer Berücksichtigung einer zunehmenden Automatisierung und Fragen zur Entwicklung der Unternehmen.

Die Fabrik als Ort innovativer Wertschätzung ist im globalisierten Wettbewerb ständigen Wandlungen und Anpassungen ausgesetzt, die es zu beherrschen gilt. In diesem Artikel werden zunächst einige aus der Wandlungsfähigkeit sich ergebende Leitgedanken und Konsequenzen aus Unternehmersicht für die Fabrik einschließlich Fabrikplanung und -betrieb erörtert. Die neuen Anforderungen verändern auch die Zielkriterien der Unternehmen sowie die Gestaltungsfelder der Fabrik. Dies führt zur Neuausrichtung der Fabrikplanung und des Fabrikbetriebs. Dabei sind sind eine Reihe von methodischen Veränderungen zu berücksichtigen.

The critical properties of orthorhombic Pr(0.6)Sr(0.4)MnO(3) single crystals were investigated by a series of static magnetization measurements along the three different crystallographic axes as well as by specific heat measurements. A careful range-of-fitting-analysis of the magnetization and susceptibility data obtained from the modified Arrott plots shows that Pr(0.6)Sr(0.4)MnO(3) has a very narrow critical regime. Nevertheless, the system belongs to the three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg universality class with short-range exchange. The critical exponents obey Widom scaling and are in excellent agreement with the single scaling equation of state M(H,epsilon) = vertical bar epsilon vertical bar(beta) f(+/-)(H/vertical bar epsilon vertical bar((beta+gamma)); with f(+) for T > T(c) and f(-) for T < T(c). A detailed analysis of the specific heat that account for all relevant contributions allows us to extract and analyze the contribution related to the magnetic phase transition. The specific heat indicates the presence of a linear electronic term at low temperatures and a prominent contribution from crystal field excitations of Pr. A comparison with data from literature for PrMnO(3) shows that a Pr-Mn magnetic exchange is responsible for a sizable shift in the lowest lying excitation.

We have measured field and temperature dependent magnetization of YbInNi4 to elucidate the nature of the magnetic transition at 3 K. For small fields we find magnetic order as previously reported. In contrast to former reports, however, our high resolution magnetization measurements down to 500 mK indicate dominating antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. In diesem Artikel werden zunächst die nach unterschiedlichen Ordnungskriterien klassifizierten Fabrikarten und Fabriktypen beschrieben. Danach analysieren die Autoren des Beitrags die Entwicklungsetappen der Fabrik nach Produktions-, Kooperations- und Fabrikstrukturen und gehen insbesondere auf die wandlungs- und vernetzungsfähige sowie ressourceneffiziente Fabrik ein. Hierbei werden insbesondere Gedanken für die frühe Phase einer Fabrik, die Konzeptplanung, angestellt.
