Fingermarks have proven to play an important role in criminal investigations for identification purposes. However, in some cases, the donor of the fingermark is not disputed but the activity that led to the deposition of the fingermark is. In this article, the state-of-theart knowledge on evaluating fingermarks at activity level is discussed. First, the relevant variables that should be taken into account when evaluating fingermarks given activity level propositions are reviewed, followed by showing how such an evaluation could be performed using a Bayesian network. Finally, the main concerns and relevant discussions related to this topic are discussed.

(237/300 words)Background: 20-30% of prisoners meet diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methylphenidate reduces ADHD symptoms but effects in prisoners are uncertain due to 16 comorbid mental health and substance use disorders. Aim: To estimate the efficacy of an Osmotic-Release-Oral-System methylphenidate (OROS-methylphenidate) in reducing ADHD symptoms in young adult prisoners with ADHD. Methods: An 8-week parallel arm, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of OROS-methylphenidate versus placebo in male prisoners (aged 16-25) meeting DSM-5 criteria for ADHD. Primary outcome was ADHD symptoms at 8-weeks using the investigator rated Connors Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS-O). Thirteen secondary outcome measures included emotional dysregulation, mind-wandering, violent attitudes, mental health symptoms, and prison officer and educational staff ratings of behaviour and aggression.Findings: Mean CAARS-O at 8 weeks in the OROS-methylphenidate arm was estimated to be reduced 26 by 0.57 points relative to the Placebo arm (95% CI: -2.41 to 3.56) and non-significant. The responder rate, defined as a 20% reduction in CAARS-O scores was 48.3% for the OROS-methylphenidate arm28 and 47.9% for the placebo arm. No statistically significant trial arm difference were detected for any of the secondary outcomes. Mean final titrated dose was 53.8 mg in the OROS-methylphenidate arm.Conclusions: ADHD symptoms did not respond to OROS-methylphenidate in young adult prisoners. The findings do not support routine treatment with OROS-methylphenidate in this population. Further research is needed to evaluate effects of higher average dosing and adherence to treatment, multimodal treatments, and preventative interventions in the community.Trial registration: EudraCT Number 2015-004271-78; ISRCTN16827947. MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was commissioned by Blueprint Architectural Design, on behalf of the clients Melanie and Robin Randle, to undertake a programme of historic building recording at an outbuilding to the rear of Ashmoor, Flitton, Bedfordshire (NGR TL 059 357, Fig 1). This was required as part of a condition attached to consent for the proposed development of demolition of the existing brick outbuilding and erection of a new outbuilding as an annex (Planning Ref. CB/21/01753/FULL). The outbuilding likely has an original construction date sometime between the late 18th and mid-19th century. Although currently associated with Ashmoor House the outbuilding predates the construction of the house itself and may have originally been associated with other nearby historical homesteads or with the Vicarage to the north. The primary construction was a red brick building with some attention given to structural details like the chequerboard pattern to the brick walls. The structure is a typical outbuilding and could have been used for storage of tools and produce, potentially for the keeping of livestock, but like many outbuildings; it was likely mutli-purpose.

The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of four trenches in the locations shown on the attached plan. Three trenches measured 20m in length and one trench measured 15m in length. All trenches measured 1.8m in width. The trenches were located to provide a representative sample of the site. During the course of the evaluation, Trenches 1 and 2 were both relocated due to the presence of overhead services, and Trench 2 was shortened from 20m to 15m due to its proximity to an upstanding structure. In August 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at Scot's Lawn, East Brent, Highbridge, Somerset. A total of four trenches were excavated. No finds, deposits or features of archaeological interest were observed and no artefactual material predating the modern period was recovered.

The illegal wildlife trade is widely recognized as a threat to biodiversity and a global crime problem estimated at tens of billions in U.S. dollars yearly. Primates are one of many animal groups impacted by wildlife crime, but a global assessment had not been conducted to direct criminological focus to specific crimes. This dissertation begins with such an assessment (Study 1), identifying habitat loss, hunting for food, and hunting for pets as correlates of a worsened endangerment status for primates. These results determined the research foci of the two subsequent chapters (illegal habitat loss and hunting for food). Crime science exploits the many ways that crime concentrates so that crime patterns and processes may be understood and reduction strategies formed accordingly. Studies 2 and 3 conform to this approach, examining the distribution of illegal deforestation across space and time (Study 2) and of poaching for meat across targets (Study 3). The first analytic component of Study 2 expands the criminology of place literature on the law of crime concentration by testing this “law” in a rural environment. Observed illegal deforestation was highly concentrated across 15 protected areas, particularly in larger parks. The second component uses a spatio-temporal regression analysis to identify the environmental and socioeconomic drivers of forest loss in one park inhabited by orangutans. During years when poverty depth was greater and in spaces within the park that were flatter, closer to the park boundary, and farther from roads and resource concessions areas, illegal forest loss was significantly more likely, indicating that these environmental and socioeconomic factors drive deforestation within the park.In Study 3, primate targets of illegal hunting for food were profiled according to CRAAVED characteristics of “hot primates,” reflecting similar crime science analyses of “hot products” (i.e., those stolen at highest rates). Locally abundant, diurnal, loudly vocal species with smaller average bodyweight and social groups were more likely to be targeted. These studies aim to demonstrate the utility of crime science to primate conservation and expand the crime science and criminology of place literatures by examining patterns of “atypical” crimes in rural environments.

Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) has been commissioned by Scroxton & Partners on behalf of Charlotte Clarke, to undertake a programme of archaeological building recording to Level 1 at 132 Main Road, Wilby. The archaeological works are being carried out prior to the proposed alterations which include insertion of new openings, creating of a lobby, removal of an internal wall, and re-hanging of doors. The areas that are proposed for alterations were targeted focus of the survey and much modern fabric was revealed. The various rear ranges have a clearly defined structural sequence which is also reflected in the survival of internal fixtures and fittings. Much alteration has already occurred and there was little historic fabric visible as a whole.

The watching brief comprised the observation by a competent archaeologist of all intrusive groundworks associated with the proposed development. These works comprised ground reduction, to the required formation level, for the extension to the existing building and associated garden landscaping. In June 2019, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological watching brief during groundworks associated with the construction of a single-storey extension at Abbey Old House, Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. The remains of two ovens, possibly of a medieval date, were identified during groundworks associated with the development. A further, albeit truncated, base of a structure was also identified and may represent the remains of a further oven.

Synopsis Patients with non-cancer pain reported increased pain and pain interference during the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic. We determined if pain, prescription opioid use, and comorbidities were associated with perceived COVID-19-related stress as the pandemic peaked. Analysis of survey data revealed that depression/anxiety, pain severity, and pain interference were most strongly and consistently associated with greater stress due to COVID-19 related changes in lifestyle, worsening of emotional/mental health and worsening pain. Identifying specific stressful experiences that most impacted patients with non-cancer pain may help target public health and treatment interventions. BACKGROUND: During the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic, patients with chronic pain reported increased pain severity and interference. This study measured the association between pain, prescription opioid use, and comorbidities with perceived COVID-19-related stress as the pandemic peaked in the United States. METHODS: From 9/2020 to 3/2021, the first 149 subjects from a prospective cohort study of non-cancer pain, completed a survey which contained the Complementary and Integrative Research (CAIR) Pandemic Impact Questionnaire (C-PIQ). Respondents also reported whether the pandemic has contributed to their pain or opioid use. Bivariate comparisons explored patient characteristics with each CAIR domain. RESULTS: Respondents mean age was 54.6 (±11.3) years, 69.8% were female, 64.6% were White. Respondent characteristics were not associated with reading/watching/thinking about the pandemic or with worry about health. Depression/anxiety (p=0.003), using any prescription opioid in the prior three months (p=0.009), higher morphine milligram equivalent used (p=0.005), higher pain severity (p=0.011), and higher pain interference (p=0.0004) were all positively and significantly associated with moderate to severe stress due to COVID-19 related lifestyle changes. Due to onsite ecological constraints, the programme of archaeological work was undertaken in two phases. The Phase 1 works comprised the excavation of 11 evaluation trenches, each measuring 30m in length by 1.8m in width, and the subsequent monitoring of the machine reduction of an area of c. 900m2. The Phase 2 works comprised the excavation of a further five evaluation trenches. During the course of the evaluation the position of the trenches was adjusted to avoid buried services and extant modern structures where possible. In May and August 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out a programme of archaeological work on land at Severn Road, Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire. A total of 15 evaluation trenches were excavated and three areas of groundworks were archaeologically monitored. A probable Roman pit was identified in a trench excavated in the south-western part of site, with its location corresponding to a probable gravel island deposited by riverine action. Structural remains, correlating with boundary walls and buildings relating to a late 19th to early 20th-century carpet works, as depicted on historic mapping were recorded across the site. A reinforced concrete basement and a 600mm narrow gauge hand cart rail system, recorded in the centre of the site, are considered likely to be associated with the use of site as a munitions factory during the Second World War. A post-medieval/modern animal burial was identified in the southern extent of the site, and late 20th-century structural remains, likely relating to the post-War expansion of the carpet works and its subsequent demolition in the early 21st century, were also recorded.

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was commissioned by Budworth Hardcastle, on behalf of Northampton Borough Council, to undertake a programme of historic building recording at Delapre Abbey. This was required to better understand the structure prior to any conservation decisions regarding its future management. The wall presents many differing constructional phases which can largely be attributed to different construction materials used. It is clear the current arrangement has been in place since the 18th century and it may be that this is a remnant of a pre-Dissolution layout. Some changes have been made to the various sections of wall, including a brick inner skin being added in the 19th century.

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was commissioned by Church Stowe Parochial Church Council, to undertake a programme of historic building recording at St Michael's Church, Church Stowe in the parish of Stowe IX Churches, Northamptonshire. This was required prior to works being undertaken on the building for alterations in line with renovation and restoration of the tower. The render was causing issues to the building integrity and so the scheme was to remove parts of the render to assess the damage and then repair as necessary. A separate application dealt with the removal of the bells from the tower for renovation before the commencement of this project, for their reinstatement after this project completion. The tower comprises a two-phase construction, the lower, earlier phase was of poor construction and likely had a projecting east wing, with pitch roof, but the overall scale or form of this 'nave' remains unclear. There were several apertures to the west elevation which may indicate it had a belfry stage, and one to the east which suggests access into a gallery or the nave roof. When considering the date of this early tower it is paramount to consider fragments of a standing cross which remain set within the tower's structure, and free standing within the church. Their iconography suggests a 9th century date and likely stood alongside a building on this site which was most likely the early tower. The tower was then heightened likely during the mid 10th. This upper stage has distinctive architectural features like long and short work and lesenes which have been placed to the village-facing elevations of the tower, suggesting some consideration was made for the economy of materials, and the display of status. A remarkable discovery was the revelation of another carved piece of standing cross used within the towers structure and previously hidden by the render. This piece allowed comparisons to be made in the iconography of this cross and another example at Rothley, Leicestershire. Standing crosses are in themselves rare survivals in the Midlands and to find two examples with similar carvings adds increasing significance to the study of these pieces.

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was commissioned by Varsity Town Planning, on behalf of the O&H, to undertake a heritage impact assessment at CP Farm, Kempston Hardwick. This was required by Bedfordshire Borough Council (BBC) to allow them to consider the site for possible allocation within their emerging Local Plan. The report was written in line with their guidance on such projects. The nearby scheduled monument of Kempston moated site has moderate potential to be affected, and is at greater risk because of its high level of sensitivity. The same applies to the Stewartby Chimneys and kilns to the south of the site, their listed building status puts their sensitivity at medium. Several low risk assets by their close proximity to the site or inclusion within the sites boundary may present a high impact by development. Particularly Hardwick bridge, Kempston Hardwick Station, Wootton Broadmead Halt, The Elms, the railway and CP Cottage. Others may represent less risk, and less likely impact.

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was commissioned by Smith Jenkins, on behalf of the homeowners, to undertake a programme of historic building recording at Priory Farm, Turvey, Bedfordshire. This was required prior to the conversion of a granary barn, stable block and piggery unit into three dwellings, the conversion of an outbuilding into a carport and storage building, and the construction of a parking area for the existing farmhouse and other ancillary works. Priory Farm is an interesting collective of agricultural buildings that represent an accretive development of farm practices that have been preserved during the current ownership. The farm during the 19th century represented a courtyard layout of mixed use, with cattle, pigs and corn as mentioned in documentary sources. The farmhouse, not the subject of this report reportedly has 17th century origins, but was largely remodelled in the 19th century in the Neo-Gothic style. The Stone Barn lies to the north of the historic farmyard and retains the most interest in terms of age and phasing. The robustness and type of timber, combined with evidence for pegging, and mortise and tenon joints suggest this barn has roots somewhere in the 17th century. The East Range extends from the Stone Barn to the east and has two phases seen in the southern elevation. The stone element to the west appears consistent with a structure seen in this position on historic maps and it is likely pre-19th century in date. The weather-boarded section to the east is a later addition likely mid/late-19th century in date. The Stables and Cart Shed have suffered from the gentrification of the farm in the mid-19th century. The fine stable partitions, brick open-sided front and over-arching roof, with decorative gables can all be attributed to this date. The Piggery, as the name suggests has been used to keep pigs in the 19th century, but it is unclear what previous purpose it may have served, or a date associated with its original construction.

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was commissioned by RPS, on behalf of the Kier, to undertake a programme of Level 2/3 historic building recording at Thornbrook House, Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire. This was required prior to works being undertaken on the building for demolition of the buildings on site. The constructional development of the building is fairly clear and can be seen with clarity upon inspection of the different roof ranges. Historic fixtures and fittings are fairly well preserved, in some rooms better then others, but the buildings conversion to a hotel has certainly necessitated the removal of these, as well as confusion to the floor plan.

The approved WSI proposed that the evaluation fieldwork would comprise the excavation of 264 trenches, each measuring 50m in length and 2m in width. The trenches were targeted to test the identified geophysical anomalies and also to provide a representative sample of the remainder of the site. 4.2. In the event, 16 of the proposed trenches were not excavated, including Trench 7 that was located within woodland. Trenches 17,101,102,140,148 & 196 were not excavated due to the presence of buried services and Trench 139 remained unexcavated due to the presence of possible asbestos within the topsoil. Trenches 256-264 could not be accessed due to a new development being constructed in Fields 29 & 30 at the southern limit of the site. Between September and December 2021 Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out an archaeological evaluation on Land west of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire (centred at NGR: 391100, 223230; Fig. 1) for BWB Consulting (BWB). A total of 248 trenches was excavated. The evaluation identified nine distinct areas of archaeological activity, primarily within the central and north-eastern extent of the proposed development area, all of which correlated with the evidence from a preceding geophysical survey. Only a limited number of additional features, predominantly shallow pits, gullies, postholes and treethrows, were revealed during the trenching that had not previously been identified by the geophysical survey. In seven of these identified archaeological areas, the activity comprised Roman enclosures, many of which displayed evidence for sub-division, with evidence for contemporary trackways. This activity appears to have commenced during the 1st and 2nd centuries, with later remodelling in the 2nd to 4th centuries. No definitive evidence for associated contemporary occupation was identified either within, or in close proximity to, the enclosures. Medieval activity was revealed in two of the areas and included a series of ditches/enclosures located in close proximity to a (now) demolished post-medieval farmstead. A possible trackway, comprising two parallel ditches, was identified adjacent to this medieval activity. Geophysical evidence for a sub-circular enclosure in the southeast of the site was confirmed during the current works. It measured approximately 40m in diameter, with the associated ditch being in excess of 4m in width, over 1.5m in depth and contained 12th to 14th-century medieval pottery. Evidence for broadly contemporary walls and both interior and exterior surfacing, as well as medieval ceramic roof tile, was identified within the interior of the enclosure. Such evidence is indicative of medieval occupation and may suggest that the enclosure is representative of a circular moat.

The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of 13 trenches measuring 50m in length by 1.8m in width. In November 2021, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation on the western parcel of land at Slyne Road, Lancaster, Lancashire. A total of 13 trenches were excavated. The evaluation identified a former field boundary ditch of postmedieval date, which correlates with a boundary shown on historic mapping.

Interpreters enable police to gather key evidentiary information during interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects who are foreign language speakers. However, words and phrasing in one language do not always have direct interpretations, and interpreted interview evidence can be liable to distortions. To date, as far as is known, an extremely limited body of research has examined the impact interpreters have on the quality and accuracy of interpreter-assisted investigative interviews (IAIIs) and interpreted evidence. This PhD research breaks new ground by examining the impact the presence of an interpreter has on the quality and accuracy of interpreted evidence, both in the interview room and in the courtroom, utilising multiple data sources and methodologies, and highlighting the impact interpreter bias can have on the investigative and prosecution process. Furthermore, this PhD scrutinises how legislation concerning the provision of interpreters has impacted the work of criminal justice interpreters, while exploring explore how trauma and emotion during investigative interviews has further affected interpreted investigative interviews. Previous research has suggested that the interpreter is likely to be a factor influencing the quality of the evidence provided, particularly interpreter emotion, but this has not been explored empirically until now. Results from the four studies in this thesis indicate that discrepancies in police officers’ and interpreters’ expectations during IAIIs can negatively impact the quality of the interview. While both police officers and interpreters recognise emotions as a factor likely to impact the quality of the interview, currently little is done to actively prevent it. Results suggest that highly complex, traumatic crimes increase the likelihood of interpreting errors, which has significant implications for certain major crimes that are likely to involve both foreign language speakers and emotional trauma. Finally, the findings emphasise a lack of understanding on the role, function, and importance of interpreter quality, suggesting a need for changes in government policy regarding public service interpreting and make suggestions for improving interview training for both police officers and interpreters.

Drinking alcohol to excess is one of the largest modifiable causes of morbidity in middle-aged adults with a third of drinkers aged 45-64 years drinking above the UK low-risk guidelines (14+ units per week). Social-ecological frameworks suggest that alcohol behaviour is driven by both individual factors and wider level contexts. Evidence gaps for understanding risk alcohol use in this age group were identified for trends in intake, individual, transitional and regional associations and an age-relevant understanding of income and alcohol expenditure. The current middle-aged literature was found to be limited by inconsistent risk alcohol intake thresholds, a lack of late middle-aged adults in birth cohorts, and lack of adjustment for the wider determinants of health. This thesis addressed these research gaps using three independent but linked studies. The first study used cross-sectional data from the Health Survey for England (HSE) from 1998 (20,871 n pooled) to consider trends and demographic, socioeconomic and co-risk factors associated with exceeding the former UK guidelines (21/14+ units per week) and binge drinking (8/6+ units on heaviest day). The second study used two waves from Understanding Society (USoc), a UK panel study (12,737 n), to determine if transitions in socioeconomic or social status between waves were associated with binge drinking patterns. The final study used USoc longitudinally over 7 waves (17,407 households) to assess the relationship with income and household composition factors associated with expenditure on alcohol. Each study used multilevel regression modelling to account for shared characteristics of individuals within regional living areas, as Government Office Regions (GOR), and account for the nonindependence and correlation in repeated measures panel data. Non-drinkers were excluded from each study to avoid abstainer bias. Data from the HSE found a gender convergence in exceeding the former weekly guidelines with binge drinking increasing in both sexes since 1998. Exceeding the guidelines was associated with smoking, higher income and education, retirement, cohabiting marital status and having no children in the household for both sexes. Binge drinking was associated with smoking, higher body-mass index, higher income, divorced marital status, no religious belonging and urban residence in both sexes with associations for having friends and no educational qualifications in men only. Entering or leaving a relationship were both associated with maintaining binge drinking over time in men compared to a stable relationship status but not in women. Moving to a rural area in both sexes, changing to no reported friends in men only, becoming a non-smoker in women only and entering employment in women only, were all negatively associated with maintaining binge drinking. Living in the North East and North West of England contributed to increased binge drinking in men independently of individual characteristics and was associated with higher household expenditures on alcohol. A £100 increase in income was associated with a £0.40 increase in alcohol expenditure in middle-aged headed households, accounting for household composition factors including household size, child status, sources of income and housing tenure. Overall, this thesis contributes to the literature on excessive alcohol use by providing age and sex-specific analyses of a previously under-researched age group, discovering multiple risk factors associated with acute and chronic risk from alcohol use and spending on alcohol. These findings make use of multilevel modelling to account for regional contexts and individual trajectories of binge drinking and household spending over time, demonstrating the utility of secondary data to explore changing health behaviours.

The fieldwork followed the methodology set out within the WSI (CA 2019). An archaeologist was present during intrusive groundworks comprising the removal of existing floor surfaces within Kings Mill House (recorded as Trench 1) and service trenches (recorded as Trench 2). An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks associated with the alteration and extension of the existing Grade II Listed Mill House and garage at Kings Mill Lane, Painswick, Gloucestershire. The base of a limestone wall foundation of a possible earlier structure or demolished annex to the upstanding Kings Mill House was identified. No artefactual material was recovered.

Two excavation areas were opened within the site : " Area 1 (c. 5m5m): " Area 2 (c. 8.8mx5.7m): The excavation areas were located to investigate features recorded by the previous archaeological watching brief In October 2020, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological excavation of land at the Former Post Office Depot, Cattle Market Road, Bristol. Two areas were excavated within the site. Four burial pits containing twenty-one sets of coffined, lime-coated human remains were identified in an area known to have been used as a cholera burial ground in 1832. An overlaying wall and a cobbled surface, possibly associated with a mid-19th century cattle market and 20th-century post office depot were also recorded.

In the context of interpreter-assisted police interviews (IAPIs) it is essential for both police officers and interpreters to maintain impartiality at all times. However, there are numerous obstacles on the way towards achieving this fundamental goal. The present study examined whether and how the different conflicts in communication are constructed and controlled within the different phases of police interviews, using a self-administered questionnaire that explored the perceptions of police officers and interpreters. Three areas of conflict pertinent to impartiality were identified: role, trust and emotion. The differing assumptions about the roles of police officers and interpreters, and the respective differing expectations, appear to create barriers in the achievement of trust and in the working relationship as a whole, which may well affect the aim of IAPIs (i.e. to gather reliable information) and alter the interview outcomes. In addition, both police officers and interpreters have strong emotional experience during IAPIs; however, neither group appear to make conscious efforts to engage in coping strategies.

The fieldwork followed the methodology set out within the Method Statement (CA 2017) and WSI (CgMs 2017). An archaeologist was present during intrusive groundworks comprising the stripping of the spine road and a later extension through Area C and the excavation of deep service trenches along the road corridor. An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks associated with the mixed development of residential and commercial/industrial units and associated infrastructure on land west of Stonehouse (Area C), Stroud, Gloucestershire. No features or deposits of archaeological interest were observed during groundworks, and no artefactual material pre-dating the modern period was recovered.
