We investigate the incidence and properties of ionized gas outflows in a sample of 52 galaxies with stellar mass between $10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ and $10^9$ M$_{\odot}$ observed with ultra-deep JWST/NIRSpec MSA spectroscopy as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). The high-spectral resolution (R2700) NIRSpec observations allowed us to identify for the first time the signature of outflows in the rest-frame optical nebular lines in low-mass galaxies at $z>3$. The incidence fraction of ionized outflows, traced by broad components, is about 25-40$\%$ depending on the intensity of the emission lines. The low incidence fraction might be due to both the sensitivity limit and the fact that outflows are not isotropic but have a limited opening angle which results in a detection only when this is directed toward our line of sight. Evidence for outflows increases slightly with stellar mass and star-formation rate. The median velocity and mass loading factor (i.e., the ratio between mass outflow rate and star formation rate) of the outflowing ionized gas are 500 km s$^{-1}$ and $\eta=2.1^{+2.5}_{-1.6}$, respectively. These are two and 100 times higher, respectively than the typical values observed in local dwarf galaxies. These outflows are able to escape the gravitational potential of the galaxy and enrich the circum-galactic medium and, potentially, the inter-galactic medium. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is revolutionizing our knowledge of $z>5$ galaxies and their actively accreting black holes. Using the JWST Cycle 1 Treasury program Ultradeep NIRSpec and NIRCam ObserVations before the Epoch of Reionization (UNCOVER) in the lensing field Abell 2744, we report the identification of a sample of little red dots at $3 < z_{\rm{phot}} < 7$ that likely contain highly-reddened accreting supermassive black holes. We present Balmer decrement H$\alpha$/ H$\beta$ measurements for a sample of 51 galaxies at redshifts z = 4-7 observed with the JWST/NIRSpec MSA, as part of the JADES survey. Leveraging 28-hour long exposures and the efficiency of the prism/clear configuration (but also using information from the medium-resolution gratings), we are able to probe directly the low-mass end of the galaxy population, reaching stellar masses Mstar as low as 10^7 Msun . We find that the correlation between Balmer decrement and Mstar is already established at these high redshifts, indicating a rapid build up of dust in moderately massive galaxies at such early epochs. The lowest-mass galaxies in our sample (Mstar = 1-3 x 10^7 Msun ) display a remarkably low Balmer decrement of 2.88 $\pm$ 0.08, consistent with case B, suggesting very little dust content. However, we warn that such a low observed Balmer decrement may also partly be a consequence of an intrinsically lower H$\alpha$/ H$\beta$, resulting from the extreme conditions of the ionized gas in these primeval and unevolved systems. We further compare the Balmer decrement to continuum-derived star-formation rates (SFR), finding tentative evidence of a correlation, which likely traces the underlying connection between SFR and mass of cold gas. However, we note that larger samples are required to distinguish between direct and primary correlations from indirect and secondary dependencies at such high redshifts.

We present 10 novel [OIII]$\lambda 4363$ auroral line detections up to $z\sim 9.5$ measured from ultra-deep JWST/NIRSpec MSA spectroscopy from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). We leverage the deepest spectroscopic observations yet taken with NIRSpec to determine electron temperatures and oxygen abundances using the direct T$_e$ method. We directly compare against a suite of locally calibrated strong-line diagnostics and recent high-$z$ calibrations. We find the calibrations fail to simultaneously match our JADES sample, thus warranting a self-consistent revision of these calibrations for the high-$z$ Universe. We find weak dependence between R2 and O3O2 with metallicity, thus suggesting these line-ratios are ineffective in the high-$z$ Universe as metallicity diagnostics and degeneracy breakers. We find R3 and R23 still correlate with metallicity, but we find tentative flattening of these diagnostics, thus suggesting future difficulties when applying these strong-line ratios as metallicity indicators in the high-$z$ Universe. We also propose and test an alternative diagnostic based on a different combination of R3 and R2 with a higher dynamic range. We find a reasonably good agreement (median offset of 0.002 dex, median absolute offset of 0.13 dex) with the JWST sample at low metallicity. Our sample demonstrates higher ionization/excitation ratios than local galaxies with rest-frame EWs(H$\beta$) $\approx 200 -300$ Angstroms. However, we find the median rest-frame EWs(H$\beta$) of our sample to be $\sim 2\text{x}$ less than the galaxies used for the local calibrations. This EW discrepancy combined with the high ionization of our galaxies does not present a clear description of [OIII]$\lambda 4363$ production in the high-$z$ Universe, thus warranting a much deeper examination into the factors affecting production., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures

We describe the NIRSpec component of the JWST Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), and provide deep spectroscopy of 253 sources targeted with the NIRSpec micro-shutter assembly in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and surrounding GOODS-South. The multi-object spectra presented here are the deepest so far obtained with JWST, amounting to up to 28 hours in the low-dispersion ($R\sim 30-300$) prism, and up to 7 hours in each of the three medium-resolution $R\approx 1000$ gratings and one high-dispersion grating, G395H ($R\approx2700$). Our low-dispersion and medium-dispersion spectra cover the wavelength range $0.6-5.3μ$m. We describe the selection of the spectroscopic targets, the strategy for the allocation of targets to micro-shutters, and the design of the observations. We present the public release of the reduced 2D and 1D spectra, and a description of the reduction and calibration process. We measure spectroscopic redshifts for 178 of the objects targeted extending up to $z=13.2$. We present a catalog of all emission lines detected at $S/N>5$, and our redshift determinations for the targets. Combined with the first JADES NIRCam data release, these public JADES spectroscopic and imaging datasets provide a new foundation for discoveries of the infrared universe by the worldwide scientific community., Submitted to A&A. We present an overview of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), an ambitious program of infrared imaging and spectroscopy in the GOODS-S and GOODS-N deep fields, designed to study galaxy evolution from high redshift to cosmic noon. JADES uses about 770 hours of Cycle 1 guaranteed time largely from the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) instrument teams. In GOODS-S, in and around the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and Chandra Deep Field South, JADES produces a deep imaging region of ~45 arcmin$^2$ with an average of 130 hrs of exposure time spread over 9 NIRCam filters. This is extended at medium depth in GOODS-S and GOODS-N with NIRCam imaging of ~175 arcmin$^2$ with an average exposure time of 20 hrs spread over 8-10 filters. In both fields, we conduct extensive NIRSpec multi-object spectroscopy, including 2 deep pointings of 55 hrs exposure time, 14 medium pointings of ~12 hrs, and 15 shallower pointings of ~4 hrs, targeting over 5000 HST and JWST-detected faint sources with 5 low, medium, and high-resolution dispersers covering 0.6-5.3 microns. Finally, JADES extends redward via coordinated parallels with the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), featuring ~9 arcmin$^2$ with 43 hours of exposure at 7.7 microns and twice that area with 2-6.5 hours of exposure at 12.8 microns For nearly 30 years, the GOODS-S and GOODS-N fields have been developed as the premier deep fields on the sky; JADES is now providing a compelling start on the JWST legacy in these fields., 33 pages, submitted to ApJ Supplement. We present a catalog of 717 candidate galaxies at $z > 8$ selected from 125 square arcminutes of NIRCam imaging as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). We combine the full JADES imaging dataset with data from the JEMS and FRESCO JWST surveys along with extremely deep existing observations from HST/ACS for a final filter set that includes fifteen JWST/NIRCam filters and five HST/ACS filters. The high-redshift galaxy candidates were selected from their estimated photometric redshifts calculated using a template fitting approach, followed by visual inspection from seven independent reviewers. We explore these candidates in detail, highlighting interesting resolved or extended sources, sources with very red long-wavelength slopes, and our highest redshift candidates, which extend to $z_{phot} = 18$. We also investigate potential contamination by stellar objects, and do not find strong evidence from SED fitting that these faint high-redshift galaxy candidates are low-mass stars. Over 93\% of the sources are newly identified from our deep JADES imaging, including 31 new galaxy candidates at $z_{phot} > 12$. Using 42 sources in our sample with measured spectroscopic redshifts from NIRSpec and FRESCO, we find excellent agreement to our photometric redshift estimates, with no catastrophic outliers and an average difference of $\langle \Delta z = z_{phot}- z_{spec} \rangle= 0.26$. We present a spatially resolved study of stellar populations in 6 galaxies with stellar masses $M_*\sim10^{10}M_\odot$ at $z\sim3.7$ using 14-filter JWST/NIRCam imaging from the JADES and JEMS surveys. The 6 galaxies are visually selected to have clumpy substructures with distinct colors over rest-frame $3600-4100$\r{A}, including a bright dominant stellar core that is close to their stellar-light centroids. With 23-filter photometry from HST to JWST, we measure the stellar-population properties of individual structural components via SED fitting using Prospector. We find that the central stellar cores are $\gtrsim2$ times more massive than the Toomre mass, indicating they may not form via in-situ fragmentation. The stellar cores have stellar ages of $0.4-0.7$ Gyr that are similar to the timescale of clump inward migration due to dynamical friction, suggesting that they likely instead formed through the coalescence of giant stellar clumps. While they have not yet quenched, the 6 galaxies are below the star-forming main sequence by $0.2-0.7$ dex. Within each galaxy, we find that the specific star formation rate is lower in the central stellar core, and the stellar-mass surface density of the core is already similar to quenched galaxies of the same masses and redshifts. Meanwhile, the stellar ages of the cores are either comparable to or younger than the extended, smooth parts of the galaxies. Our findings are consistent with model predictions of the gas-rich compaction scenario for the buildup of galaxies' central regions at high redshifts. We present the results of a search for high-redshift ($z>9$) galaxy candidates in the JWST UNCOVER survey, using deep NIRCam and NIRISS imaging in 7 bands over $\sim45$ arcmin$^2$ and ancillary HST observations. The NIRCam observations reach a $5-\sigma$ limiting magnitude of $\sim 29.2$ AB. The identification of high$-z$ candidates relies on a combination of a dropout selection and photometric redshifts. We find 16 candidates at $99$. A few galaxies at $z\sim9-10$ appear to show a clear Balmer break between the F356W and F444W/F410M bands, which helps constrain their stellar mass. We estimate blue UV continuum slopes between $\beta=-1.8$ and $-2.3$, typical for early galaxies at $z>9$ but not as extreme as the bluest recently discovered sources. We also find evidence for a rapid redshift-evolution of the mass-luminosity relation and a redshift-evolution of the UV continuum slope for a given range of intrinsic magnitude, in line with theoretical predictions. These findings suggest that deeper JWST observations are needed to reach the fainter galaxy population at those early epochs, and follow-up spectroscopy will help better constrain the physical properties and star formation histories of a larger sample of galaxies., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

We analyse the gas-phase metallicity properties of a sample of 66 low stellar mass (log M*/M_sun < 8.5) galaxies at 36, with galaxies significantly less enriched (by ~0.4 dex on average) than predicted given their M* and SFR. These observations are consistent with an enhanced stochasticity in the accretion rate from the cosmic web, and/or with an increased efficiency in metal removals by outflows, prompting us to reconsider the nature of the relationship between M*, O/H, and SFR in the early Universe., Comment: Submitted to A&A. We report the discovery of a remarkable Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxy at $z=7.278$, JADES-GS+53.16746-27.7720 (shortened to JADES-GS-z7-LA), with EW$_0$(Ly$\alpha$) $\approx400 \pm 90$A and UV magnitude $-16.7$. The spectroscopic redshift is confirmed via rest-frame optical lines [O II], H$\beta$ and [O III] in its JWST/NIRSpec Micro-Shutter Assembly (MSA) spectrum. The Ly$\alpha$ line is detected in both lower resolution ($R\sim100$) PRISM as well as medium resolution ($R\sim1000$) G140M grating spectra. The Ly$\alpha$ FWHM in the grating is $\approx360$ km s$^{-1}$ and the line peaks within $120$ km s$^{-1}$ of the systemic redshift, indicative of very little neutral gas or dust within the galaxy. We estimate the Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction to be $\sim100\%$. JADES-GS-z7-LA has a [O III]/[O II] ratio (O32) of $8.8 \pm 1.1$ and ([O III]+[O II])/H$\beta$ ratio (R23) of $9.6\pm2.2$, consistent with low metallicity and high ionization parameters. Deep NIRCam imaging also revealed a close companion source (separated by $0.23''$), which exhibits similar photometry to that of JADES-GS-z7-LA, with a photometric excess in the F410M NIRCam image consistent with [O III]+H$\beta$ emission at the same redshift. The spectral energy distribution of JADES-GS-z7-LA indicates a `bursty' star-formation history, with a low stellar mass of $10^{7.15}$ M$_\odot$. The only explanation of the high EW Ly$\alpha$ emission seen in JADES-GS-z7-LA is if it resides in an ionized bubble with radius $\gtrsim 3$ pMpc. Owing to the faint nature of JADES-GS-z7-LA, we show that it is incapable of single-handedly ionizing a bubble large enough. Therefore, we suggest that JADES-GS-z7-LA (and possibly the companion source) may be a part of a larger overdensity, presenting direct evidence of overlapping ionized bubbles at $z>7$, allowing us to study the process of reionization across both small and large scales., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics, comments welcome!

We present JADES JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy of GN-z11, the most luminous candidate $z>10$ Lyman break galaxy in the GOODS-North field with $M_{UV}=-21.5$. We derive a redshift of $z=10.603$ (lower than previous determinations) based on multiple emission lines in our low and medium resolution spectra over $0.8-5.3 \mu$m. We significantly detect the continuum and measure a blue rest-UV spectral slope of $\beta=-2.4$. Remarkably, we see spatially-extended Lyman-$\alpha$ in emission (despite the highly-neutral IGM expected at this early epoch), offset 555 km s$^{-1}$ redward of the systemic redshift. From our measurements of collisionally-excited lines of both low- and high-ionization (including [O II]$\lambda3727$, [Ne III]$\lambda 3869$ and C III]$\lambda1909$) we infer a high ionization parameter ($\log U\sim -2$). We detect the rarely-seen N IV]$\lambda1486$ and N III]$\lambda1748$ lines in both our low and medium resolution spectra, with other high ionization lines seen in the low resolution spectrum such as He II (blended with O III]) and C IV (with a possible P-Cygni profile). Based on the observed rest-UV line ratios, we cannot conclusively rule out photoionization from AGN, although the high C III]/He II and N III]/He II ratios are compatible with a star-formation explanation. If the observed emission lines are powered by star formation, then the strong N III]$\lambda1748$ observed may imply an unusually high $N/O$ abundance. Balmer emission lines (H$\gamma$, H$\delta$) are also detected, and if powered by star formation rather than an AGN we infer a star formation rate of $\sim 20-30 M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$ (depending on the IMF) and low dust attenuation. We present JWST NIRCam 9-band near-infrared imaging of the luminous $z=10.6$ galaxy GN-z11 from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) of the GOODS-N field. We find a spectral energy distribution (SED) entirely consistent with the expected form of a high-redshift galaxy: a clear blue continuum from 1.5 to 4 microns with a complete dropout in F115W. The core of GN-z11 is extremely compact in JWST imaging. We analyze the image with a two-component model, using a point source and a S\'{e}rsic profile that fits to a half-light radius of 200 pc and an index $n=0.9$. We find a low-surface brightness haze about $0.4''$ to the northeast of the galaxy, which is most likely a foreground object but might be a more extended component of GN-z11. At a spectroscopic redshift of 10.60 (Bunker et al. 2023), the comparison of the NIRCam F410M and F444W images spans the Balmer jump. From population synthesis modeling, here assuming no light from an active galactic nucleus, we reproduce the SED of GN-z11, finding a stellar mass of $\sim$$10^{9}~M_{\odot}$, a star-formation rate of $\sim$$20~M_{\odot}~\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ and a young stellar age of $\sim$$20~\mathrm{Myr}$. As massive galaxies at high redshift are likely to be highly clustered, we search for faint neighbors of GN-z11, finding 9 galaxies out to $\sim$5 comoving Mpc transverse with photometric redshifts consistent with $z=10.6$, and a 10$^{\rm th}$ more tentative dropout only $3''$ away. This is consistent with GN-z11 being hosted by a massive dark-matter halo ($\approx8\times10^{10}~M_{\odot}$), though lower halo masses cannot be ruled out., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present JEMS (JWST Extragalactic Medium-band Survey), the first public medium-band imaging survey carried out using JWST/NIRCam and NIRISS. These observations use $\sim2\mu$m and $\sim4\mu$m medium-band filters (NIRCam F182M, F210M, F430M, F460M, F480M; and NIRISS F430M & F480M in parallel) over 15.6 square arcminutes in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF), thereby building on the deepest multi-wavelength public datasets available anywhere on the sky. We describe our science goals, survey design, NIRCam and NIRISS image reduction methods, and describe our first data release of the science-ready mosaics. The physical processes that establish the morphological evolution and the structural diversity of galaxies are key unknowns in extragalactic astrophysics. Here we report the finding of the morphologically-mature galaxy JADES-GS+53.18343-27.79097, which existed within the first 700 million years of the Universe's history. This star-forming galaxy with a stellar mass of $10^{8.6}$ solar masses consists of three components, a highly-compact core with a half-light radius of 144 pc, a strongly star-forming disc with a radius of 468 pc, and a star-forming clump, which all show distinctive star-formation histories. The central stellar mass density of this galaxy is within a factor of two of the most massive present-day ellipticals, while being globally 1000 times less massive. The radial profile of the specific star-formation rate is strongly rising toward the outskirts. This evidence strongly suggests the first detection of inside-out growth of a galaxy as a proto-bulge and a star-forming disc in the Epoch of Reionization., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Nature Astronomy

The power-law slope of the rest-UV continuum ($f_{\lambda}\propto\lambda^{\beta}$) is a key metric of early star forming galaxies, providing one of our only windows into the stellar populations and physical conditions of $z>10$ galaxies. Expanding upon previous studies with limited sample sizes, we leverage deep imaging from JADES to investigate the UV slopes of 179 $z>9$ galaxies with apparent magnitudes of $m_{\rm F200W}=26-31$, which display a median UV slope of $\beta=-2.4$. We compare to a statistical sample of $z=5-9$ galaxies, finding a shift toward bluer rest-UV colors at all $\rm~M_{UV}$. The most UV-luminous $z>9$ galaxies are significantly bluer than their lower-redshift counterparts, representing a dearth of moderately-red galaxies in the first $500~$Myr. At yet earlier times, the $z>11$ galaxy population exhibits very blue UV slopes, implying very low attenuation from dust. The rest-frame UV recombination emission line Ly-alpha can be powered by ionizing photons from young massive stars in star forming galaxies, but its ability to be resonantly scattered by neutral gas complicates its interpretation. For reionization era galaxies, a neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) will scatter Ly-alpha from the line of sight, making Ly-alpha a useful probe of the neutral fraction at z>6. Here, we explore Ly-alpha in JWST/NIRSpec spectra from the ongoing GTO program JADES, which targets hundreds of galaxies in the well-studied GOODS-S and GOODS-N fields. These sources are UV-faint (-20.45.5 (as derived with optical lines) are fit with line and continuum models, in order to search for significant line emission. Through exploration of the R100 data, we find evidence for Ly-alpha in 15 sources. Additional analysis of the R1000 data from the same set of galaxies results in five additional detections. This sample allows us to place observational constraints on the fraction of galaxies with Ly-alpha emission in the redshift range 5.5, Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures. Submitted to A&A

We present emission line ratios from a sample of 26 Lyman break galaxies from $z\sim5.5-9.5$ with $-17.05.5$ spectra. We find that the emission line ratios exhibited by these $z\sim5.5-9.5$ galaxies occupy clearly distinct regions of line-ratio space compared to typical z~0-3 galaxies, instead being more consistent with extreme populations of lower-redshift galaxies. This is best illustrated by the [OIII]/[OII] ratio, tracing interstellar medium (ISM) ionisation, in which we observe more than half of our sample to have [OIII]/[OII]>10. Our high signal-to-noise spectra reveal more than an order of magnitude of scatter in line ratios such as [OII]/H$\beta$ and [OIII]/[OII], indicating significant diversity in the ISM conditions within the sample. We find no convincing detections of [NII] in our sample, either in individual galaxies, or a stack of all G395M/F290LP spectra. The emission line ratios observed in our sample are generally consistent with galaxies with extremely high ionisation parameters (log $U\sim-1.5$), and a range of metallicities spanning from $\sim0.1\times Z_\odot$ to higher than $\sim0.3\times Z_\odot$, suggesting we are probing low-metallicity systems undergoing periods of rapid star-formation, driving strong radiation fields. We present a study of the environments of 16 Lyman-$α$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) in the reionisation era ($5.8 < z < 8$) identified by $\mathit{JWST}$/NIRSpec as part of the $\mathit{JWST}$ Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). Unless situated in sufficiently (re)ionised regions, Lyman-$α$ emission from these galaxies would be strongly absorbed by neutral gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM). We conservatively estimate sizes of the ionised regions required to reconcile the relatively low Lyman-$α$ velocity offsets ($Δv_\mathrm{Lyα} < 300 \, \mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$) with moderately high Lyman-$α$ escape fractions ($f_\mathrm{esc, \, Lyα} > 5\%$) observed in our sample of LAEs, indicating the presence of ionised "bubbles" with physical sizes of the order of $0.1 \, \mathrm{pMpc} \lesssim R_\text{ion} \lesssim 1 \, \mathrm{pMpc}$ in a patchy reionisation scenario where the bubbles are embedded in a fully neutral IGM. Around half of the LAEs in our sample are found to coincide with large-scale galaxy overdensities seen in FRESCO at $z \sim 5.8$-$5.9$ and $z \sim 7.3$, suggesting Lyman-$α$ transmission is strongly enhanced in such overdense regions, and underlining the importance of LAEs as tracers of the first large-scale ionised bubbles. Considering only spectroscopically confirmed galaxies, we find our sample of UV-faint LAEs ($M_\text{UV} \gtrsim -20 \, \mathrm{mag}$) and their direct neighbours are generally not able to produce the required ionised regions based on the Lyman-$α$ transmission properties, suggesting lower-luminosity sources likely play an important role in carving out these bubbles. These observations demonstrate the combined power of $\mathit{JWST}$ multi-object and slitless spectroscopy in acquiring a unique view of the early stages of Cosmic Reionisation via the most distant LAEs., 12 pages, 6 figures. We present a spatially resolved study of stellar populations in 6 galaxies with stellar masses $M_*\sim10^{10}M_\odot$ at $z\sim3.7$ using 14-filter JWST/NIRCam imaging from the JADES and JEMS surveys. The 6 galaxies are visually selected to have clumpy substructures with distinct colors over rest-frame $3600-4100$Å, including a bright dominant stellar core that is close to their stellar-light centroids. With 23-filter photometry from HST to JWST, we measure the stellar-population properties of individual structural components via SED fitting using Prospector. We find that the central stellar cores are $\gtrsim2$ times more massive than the Toomre mass, indicating they may not form via in-situ fragmentation. The stellar cores have stellar ages of $0.4-0.7$ Gyr that are similar to the timescale of clump inward migration due to dynamical friction, suggesting that they likely instead formed through the coalescence of giant stellar clumps. While they have not yet quenched, the 6 galaxies are below the star-forming main sequence by $0.2-0.7$ dex. Within each galaxy, we find that the specific star formation rate is lower in the central stellar core, and the stellar-mass surface density of the core is already similar to quenched galaxies of the same masses and redshifts. Meanwhile, the stellar ages of the cores are either comparable to or younger than the extended, smooth parts of the galaxies. Our findings are consistent with model predictions of the gas-rich compaction scenario for the buildup of galaxies' central regions at high redshifts. We report the discovery of a quiescent galaxy at $z=2.34$ with a stellar mass of only $M_\star = 9.5^{+1.8}_{-1.2} \times 10^{8} \mathrm{M}_\odot$, based on deep JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy. This is the least massive quiescent galaxy found so far at high redshift. We use a Bayesian approach to model the spectrum and photometry, and find the target to have been quiescent for 0.6 Gyr with a mass-weighted average stellar age of 0.8-1.7 Gyr (dominated by systematics). The galaxy displays an inverse colour gradient with radius, consistent with environment-driven quenching. Based on a combination of spectroscopic and robust (medium- and broad-band) photometric redshifts, we identify a galaxy overdensity near the location of the target (5-$\sigma$ above the background level at this redshift). We stress that had we been specifically targetting galaxies within overdensities, the main target would not have been selected on photometry alone; therefore, environment studies based on photometric redshifts are biased against low-mass quiescent galaxies. The overdensity contains three spectroscopically confirmed, massive, old galaxies ($M_\star = 8-17 \times 10^{10} \mathrm{M}_\odot$). The presence of these evolved systems points to accelerated galaxy evolution in overdensities at redshifts z > 2, in agreement with previous works. In projection, our target lies only 35 pkpc away from the most massive galaxy in this overdensity (spectroscopic redshift z = 2.349) which is located close to overdensity's centre. This suggests the low-mass galaxy was quenched by environment, making it possibly the earliest evidence for environment-driven quenching to date., Comment: Submitted to A&A

Black holes with masses in excess of several billion solar masses have been found at redshifts 6-7.5, when the universe was less than 1 Gyr old. The existence of such supermassive black holes already in place at such early epochs has been challenging for theoretical models and distinguishing between different scenarios has prompted the search for their progenitors at earlier epochs. Here we present an extensive analysis of the JWST-NIRSpec spectrum (from the JADES survey) of GN-z11, an exceptionally luminous galaxy at z=10.6, revealing the detection of the high ionization [NeIV]$\lambda$2423 transition and semi-forbidden nebular lines tracing gas densities higher than $\rm 10^{10}~cm^{-3}$, typical of the Broad Line Region of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). These spectral features indicate that, in addition to star formation, GN-z11 also hosts an accreting black hole. We do not exclude a contribution from extreme stellar populations, however Wolf Rayet stars alone cannot account for many of the spectral properties. The spectrum also reveals a deep and blueshifted CIV$\lambda$1549 absorption trough, tracing an outflow with a velocity of $\sim 800-1000$ km/s, higher than typically observed in starburst galaxies, hence likely driven by the AGN. Assuming local virial scaling relations, we derive a black hole mass of $\rm \log{(M_{BH}/M_{\odot})}=6.2\pm 0.3$, accreting at about 5 times the Eddington rate. While super-Eddington accretion is probably episodic, if it has been occurring for the previous $\sim 100$ Myr, then the black hole could have potentially originated even from a stellar mass seed at z$\sim$12-15. We finally discuss that our finding naturally explains the high luminosity of GN-z11 and can also provide an explanation for its exceptionally high nitrogen abundance., Comment: 8 figures, submitted

Reionization is thought to be driven by faint star-forming galaxies, but characterizing this population in detail has long remained very challenging. Here we utilize deep nine-band NIRCam imaging from JADES to study the star-forming and ionizing properties of 756 $z\sim6-9$ galaxies, including hundreds of very UV-faint objects ($M_\mathrm{UV}>-18$). The faintest ($m\sim30$) galaxies in our sample typically have stellar masses of $M_\ast\sim(1-3)\times10^7$ $M_\odot$ and young light-weighted ages ($\sim$50 Myr), though some show strong Balmer breaks implying much older ages ($\sim$500 Myr). We find no evidence for extremely massive galaxies ($>3\times10^{10}$ $M_\odot$) in our sample. We infer a strong (factor $>$2) decline in the typical [OIII]$+$H$\beta$ EWs towards very faint $z\sim6-9$ galaxies, yet a weak UV luminosity dependence on the H$\alpha$ EWs at $z\sim6$. We demonstrate that these EW trends can be explained if fainter galaxies have systematically lower metallicities as well as more recently-declining star formation histories relative to the most UV-luminous galaxies in our sample. Our data provide evidence that the brightest galaxies are frequently experiencing a recent strong upturn in SFR. We also discuss how the EW trends may be influenced by a strong correlation between $M_\mathrm{UV}$ and Lyman continuum escape fraction. This alternative explanation has dramatically different implications for the contribution of galaxies along the luminosity function to cosmic reionization, highlighting the need for deep spectroscopic follow-up. Finally, we quantify the photometric overdensities around two $z>7$ strong Ly$\alpha$ emitters in the JADES footprint. One Ly$\alpha$ emitter lies close to a strong photometric overdensity while the other shows no significant nearby overdensity, perhaps implying that not all strong $z>7$ Ly$\alpha$ emitters reside in large ionized bubbles., Comment: Minor updates to references and typo corrections. 29 pages, 16 figures. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is revolutionizing our knowledge of $z>5$ galaxies and their actively accreting black holes. Using the JWST Cycle 1 Treasury program Ultradeep NIRSpec and NIRCam ObserVations before the Epoch of Reionization (UNCOVER) in the lensing field Abell 2744, we report the identification of a sample of little red dots at $3 < z_{\rm{phot}} < 7$ that likely contain highly-reddened accreting supermassive black holes. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is capable of delivering an unprecedented all-sky, high-spatial resolution, multi-epoch infrared map to the astronomical community. This opportunity arises in the midst of numerous ground- and space-based surveys that will provide extensive spectroscopy and imaging together covering the entire sky (such as Rubin/LSST, Euclid, UNIONS, SPHEREx, DESI, SDSS-V, GALAH, 4MOST, WEAVE, MOONS, PFS, UVEX, NEO Surveyor, etc.). Roman can uniquely provide uniform high-spatial-resolution (~0.1 arcsec) imaging over the entire sky, vastly expanding the science reach and precision of all of these near-term and future surveys. This imaging will not only enhance other surveys, but also facilitate completely new science. By imaging the full sky over two epochs, Roman can measure the proper motions for stars across the entire Milky Way, probing 100 times fainter than Gaia out to the very edge of the Galaxy. Here, we propose NANCY: a completely public, all-sky survey that will create a high-value legacy dataset benefiting innumerable ongoing and forthcoming studies of the universe. NANCY is a pure expression of Roman's potential: it images the entire sky, at high spatial resolution, in a broad infrared bandpass that collects as many photons as possible. We present the properties of 16 faint Lyman-$\alpha$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) at $z>5.8$ from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) spectroscopic data in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field/GOODS-S. These LAEs span a redshift range $z\approx5.8-8.0$ and UV magnitude range $M_{\textrm{UV}} \approx -17$ to $-20.6$, with Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width (EW) in the range $\approx 25-350$ \AA. The detection of other rest-optical emission lines in the spectra of these LAEs enables the determination of accurate systemic redshifts and Ly$\alpha$ velocity offsets, as well as the physical and chemical composition of their stars and interstellar media. These faint LAEs are consistent with metal-poor systems with high ionization parameters, similar to the general galaxy population at $z>6$. We measure an average ionizing photon production efficiency, log($\xi_{\textrm{ion}}$/erg$^{-1}$ Hz) $\approx 25.56$ across our LAEs, which does not evolve strongly with redshift. We report an anti-correlation between Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction and velocity offset from systemic, consistent with model expectations. We further find that the strength and velocity offset of Ly$\alpha$ are not correlated with galaxy spectroscopic properties nor with $\xi_{\textrm{ion}}$. We find a decrease in Ly$\alpha$ escape fractions with redshift, indicative of decreasing sizes of ionized bubbles around LAEs at high redshifts. We use a range of galaxy properties to predict Lyman continuum escape fractions for our LAEs, finding that the ionizing photon output into the intergalactic medium from our LAEs remains roughly constant across the observed UV magnitude and Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width, showing a mild increase with redshift. We present 10 novel [OIII]$λ4363$ auroral line detections up to $z\sim 9.5$ measured from ultra-deep JWST/NIRSpec MSA spectroscopy from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). We leverage the deepest spectroscopic observations yet taken with NIRSpec to determine electron temperatures and oxygen abundances using the direct T$_e$ method. We directly compare against a suite of locally calibrated strong-line diagnostics and recent high-$z$ calibrations. We find the calibrations fail to simultaneously match our JADES sample, thus warranting a self-consistent revision of these calibrations for the high-$z$ Universe. We find weak dependence between R2 and O3O2 with metallicity, thus suggesting these line-ratios are ineffective in the high-$z$ Universe as metallicity diagnostics and degeneracy breakers. We find R3 and R23 still correlate with metallicity, but we find tentative flattening of these diagnostics, thus suggesting future difficulties when applying these strong-line ratios as metallicity indicators in the high-$z$ Universe. We also propose and test an alternative diagnostic based on a different combination of R3 and R2 with a higher dynamic range. We find a reasonably good agreement (median offset of 0.002 dex, median absolute offset of 0.13 dex) with the JWST sample at low metallicity. Our sample demonstrates higher ionization/excitation ratios than local galaxies with rest-frame EWs(H$β$) $\approx 200 -300$ Angstroms. However, we find the median rest-frame EWs(H$β$) of our sample to be $\sim 2\text{x}$ less than the galaxies used for the local calibrations. This EW discrepancy combined with the high ionization of our galaxies does not present a clear description of [OIII]$λ4363$ production in the high-$z$ Universe, thus warranting a much deeper examination into the factors affecting production., 28 pages, 13 figures

We present the results of a search for high-redshift ($z>9$) galaxy candidates in the JWST UNCOVER survey, using deep NIRCam and NIRISS imaging in 7 bands over $\sim45$ arcmin$^2$ and ancillary HST observations. The NIRCam observations reach a $5-σ$ limiting magnitude of $\sim 29.2$ AB. The identification of high$-z$ candidates relies on a combination of a dropout selection and photometric redshifts. We find 16 candidates at $99$. A few galaxies at $z\sim9-10$ appear to show a clear Balmer break between the F356W and F444W/F410M bands, which helps constrain their stellar mass. We estimate blue UV continuum slopes between $β=-1.8$ and $-2.3$, typical for early galaxies at $z>9$ but not as extreme as the bluest recently discovered sources. We also find evidence for a rapid redshift-evolution of the mass-luminosity relation and a redshift-evolution of the UV continuum slope for a given range of intrinsic magnitude, in line with theoretical predictions. These findings suggest that deeper JWST observations are needed to reach the fainter galaxy population at those early epochs, and follow-up spectroscopy will help better constrain the physical properties and star formation histories of a larger sample of galaxies., Submitted to MNRAS

We present JEMS (JWST Extragalactic Medium-band Survey), the first public medium-band imaging survey carried out using JWST/NIRCam and NIRISS. These observations use $\sim2μ$m and $\sim4μ$m medium-band filters (NIRCam F182M, F210M, F430M, F460M, F480M; and NIRISS F430M & F480M in parallel) over 15.6 square arcminutes in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF), thereby building on the deepest multi-wavelength public datasets available anywhere on the sky. We describe our science goals, survey design, NIRCam and NIRISS image reduction methods, and describe our first data release of the science-ready mosaics. We investigate the incidence and properties of ionized gas outflows in a sample of 52 galaxies with stellar mass between $10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ and $10^9$ M$_{\odot}$ observed with ultra-deep JWST/NIRSpec MSA spectroscopy as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). The high-spectral resolution (R2700) NIRSpec observations allowed us to identify for the first time the signature of outflows in the rest-frame optical nebular lines in low-mass galaxies at $z>3$. The incidence fraction of ionized outflows, traced by broad components, is about 25-40$\%$ depending on the intensity of the emission lines. The low incidence fraction might be due to both the sensitivity limit and the fact that outflows are not isotropic but have a limited opening angle which results in a detection only when this is directed toward our line of sight. Evidence for outflows increases slightly with stellar mass and star-formation rate. The median velocity and mass loading factor (i.e., the ratio between mass outflow rate and star formation rate) of the outflowing ionized gas are 500 km s$^{-1}$ and $η=2.1^{+2.5}_{-1.6}$, respectively. These are two and 100 times higher, respectively than the typical values observed in local dwarf galaxies. These outflows are able to escape the gravitational potential of the galaxy and enrich the circum-galactic medium and, potentially, the inter-galactic medium. Interstellar dust captures a significant fraction of elements heavier than helium in the solid state and is an indispensable component both in theory and observations of galaxy evolution. Dust emission is generally the primary coolant of the interstellar medium (ISM) and facilitates the gravitational collapse and fragmentation of gas clouds from which stars form, while altering the emission spectrum of galaxies from ultraviolet (UV) to far-infrared wavelengths through the reprocessing of starlight. However, the astrophysical origin of various types of dust grains remains an open question, especially in the early Universe. Here we report direct evidence for the presence of carbonaceous grains from the detection of the broad UV absorption feature around $2175 \, \mathring{\rm A}$ in deep near-infrared spectra of galaxies up to the first billion years of cosmic time, at a redshift ($z$) of $\sim 7$. This dust attenuation feature has previously only been observed spectroscopically in older, more evolved galaxies at redshifts of $z < 3$. The carbonaceous grains giving rise to this feature are often thought to be produced on timescales of hundreds of millions of years by asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We use deep NIRSpec spectroscopic data from the JADES survey to derive the star formation histories (SFHs) of a sample of 200 galaxies at 0.6$

We present JADES JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy of GN-z11, the most luminous candidate $z>10$ Lyman break galaxy in the GOODS-North field with $M_{UV}=-21.5$. We derive a redshift of $z=10.603$ (lower than previous determinations) based on multiple emission lines in our low and medium resolution spectra over $0.8-5.3 μ$m. We significantly detect the continuum and measure a blue rest-UV spectral slope of $β=-2.4$. Remarkably, we see spatially-extended Lyman-$α$ in emission (despite the highly-neutral IGM expected at this early epoch), offset 555 km s$^{-1}$ redward of the systemic redshift. From our measurements of collisionally-excited lines of both low- and high-ionization (including [O II]$\lambda3727$, [Ne III]$λ3869$ and C III]$\lambda1909$) we infer a high ionization parameter ($\log U\sim -2$). We detect the rarely-seen N IV]$\lambda1486$ and N III]$\lambda1748$ lines in both our low and medium resolution spectra, with other high ionization lines seen in the low resolution spectrum such as He II (blended with O III]) and C IV (with a possible P-Cygni profile). Based on the observed rest-UV line ratios, we cannot conclusively rule out photoionization from AGN, although the high C III]/He II and N III]/He II ratios are compatible with a star-formation explanation. If the observed emission lines are powered by star formation, then the strong N III]$\lambda1748$ observed may imply an unusually high $N/O$ abundance. Balmer emission lines (H$γ$, H$δ$) are also detected, and if powered by star formation rather than an AGN we infer a star formation rate of $\sim 20-30 M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$ (depending on the IMF) and low dust attenuation. We analyse the gas-phase metallicity properties of a sample of 66 low stellar mass (log M*/M_sun < 8.5) galaxies at 36, with galaxies significantly less enriched (by ~0.4 dex on average) than predicted given their M* and SFR. These observations are consistent with an enhanced stochasticity in the accretion rate from the cosmic web, and/or with an increased efficiency in metal removals by outflows, prompting us to reconsider the nature of the relationship between M*, O/H, and SFR in the early Universe., Submitted to A&A. Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In November 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) returned deep near-infrared images of Abell~2744 -- a powerful lensing cluster capable of magnifying distant, incipient galaxies beyond it. Together with the existing Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, this publicly available dataset opens a fundamentally new discovery space to understand the remaining mysteries of the formation and evolution of galaxies across cosmic time. In this work, we detect and measure some 50,000 objects across the 45 arcmin$^2$ JWST footprint down to a $5\,\sigma$ limiting magnitude of $\sim$29.9\,mag in 0.32" apertures. Photometry is performed using circular apertures on images matched to the point spread function of the reddest NIRCam band, F444W, and cleaned of bright cluster galaxies and the related intra-cluster light. To give an impression of the photometric performance, we measure photometric redshifts and achieve a $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}\approx0.03$ based on known, but relatively small, spectroscopic samples. With this paper, we publicly release HST and JWST PSF-matched photometric catalogs optimized for bright and extended sources (0.7" apertures) and compact and faint sources (0.32" apertures) along with basic photometric redshifts, rest-frame colors, and individual magnification estimates. Recent JWST/NIRCam imaging taken for the ultra-deep UNCOVER program reveals a very red dropout object at $z_{\mathrm{phot}}\simeq7.6$, triply imaged by the galaxy cluster Abell 2744 ($z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.308$). All three images are very compact, i.e. unresolved, with a de-lensed size upper-limit of $r_{e}\lesssim35$ pc. The images have apparent magnitudes of $m_{\mathrm{F444W}}\sim25-26$ AB, and the magnification-corrected absolute UV magnitude of the source is $M_{\mathrm{UV},1450}=-16.81\pm0.09$. From the sum of observed fluxes and from a spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis, we obtain estimates of the bolometric luminosities of the source of $L_{\mathrm{bol}}\gtrsim10^{43} \frac{\mathrm{erg}}{\mathrm{s}}$ and $L_{\mathrm{bol}}\sim10^{44}-10^{46} \frac{\mathrm{erg}}{\mathrm{s}}$, respectively. Based on its compact, point-like appearance, its position in color-color space and the SED analysis, we tentatively conclude that this object is a UV-faint dust-obscured quasar-like object, i.e. an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at high redshift. We also discuss other alternative origins for the object's emission features, including a massive star cluster, Population III, supermassive, or dark stars, or a direct-collapse black hole. Although populations of red galaxies at similar photometric redshifts have been detected with JWST, this object is unique in that its high-redshift nature is corroborated geometrically by lensing, that it is unresolved despite being magnified -- and thus intrinsically even more compact -- and that it occupies notably distinct regions in both size-luminosity and color-color space. In this paper we describe the survey design for the Ultradeep NIRSpec and NIRCam ObserVations before the Epoch of Reionization (UNCOVER) Cycle 1 JWST Treasury program, which executed its early imaging component in November 2022. The UNCOVER survey includes ultradeep ($\sim29-30\mathrm{AB}$) imaging of $\sim$45 arcmin$^2$ on and around the well-studied Abell 2744 galaxy cluster at $z=0.308$ and will follow-up ${\sim}500$ galaxies with extremely deep low-resolution spectroscopy with the NIRSpec/PRISM during the summer of 2023. We describe the science goals, survey design, target selection, and planned data releases. We also present and characterize the depths of the first NIRCam imaging mosaic, highlighting previously unparalleled resolved and ultradeep 2-4 micron imaging of known objects in the field. The UNCOVER primary NIRCam mosaic spans 28.8 arcmin$^2$ in seven filters (F115W, F150W, F200W, F277W, F356W, F410M, F444W) and 16.8 arcmin$^2$ in our NIRISS parallel (F115W, F150W, F200W, F356W, and F444W). To maximize early community use of the Treasury data set, we publicly release full reduced mosaics of public JWST imaging including 45 arcmin$^2$ NIRCam and 17 arcmin$^2$ NIRISS mosaics on and around the Abell 2744 cluster, including the Hubble Frontier Field primary and parallel footprints., 17 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, submitted to ApJ, comments welcome (v2 with full author list in metadata)

We explore how the presence of detectable molecular gas depends on the inferred star formation histories (SFHs) in 8 massive, quiescent galaxies at $\mathrm{z\sim0.7}$. Half of the sample have clear detections of molecular gas, traced by CO(2-1). We find that the molecular gas content is unrelated to the rate of star formation decline prior to the most recent 1 Gyr, suggesting that the gas reservoirs are not leftover from their primary star formation epoch. However, the recent SFHs of CO-detected galaxies demonstrate evidence for secondary bursts of star formation in their last Gyr. The fraction of stellar mass formed in these secondary bursts ranges from $\mathrm{f_{burst}\approx0.3-6\%}$, and ended between $\mathrm{t_{end\mbox{-}burst}\approx0-330~Myr}$ ago. The CO-detected galaxies form a higher fraction of mass in the last Gyr ($\mathrm{f_{M_{1Gyr}}=2.6\pm1.8\%}$) compared to the CO-undetected galaxies ($\mathrm{f_{M_{1Gyr}}=0.2\pm0.1\%}$). The galaxies with gas reservoirs have enhanced late-time star formation, highlighting this as a contributing factor to the observed heterogeneity in the gas reservoirs in high-redshift quiescent galaxies. We find that the amount of gas and star formation driven by these secondary bursts are inconsistent with that expected from dry minor mergers, and instead are likely driven by recently-accreted gas i.e., gas-rich minor mergers. This conclusion would not have been made based on $\mathrm{SFR_{UV+IR}}$ measurements alone, highlighting the power of detailed SFH modeling in the interpretation of gas reservoirs. Larger samples are needed to understand the frequency of low-level rejuvenation among quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshifts, and to what extent this drives the diversity of molecular gas reservoirs.

We present a sample of four emission-line galaxies at $z=6.11-6.35$ that were serendipitously discovered using the commissioning data for the JWST/NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) mode. One of them (at $z=6.11$) has been reported previously while the others are new discoveries. These sources are selected by the secure detections of both [O III] $\lambda$5007 and H$\alpha$ lines with other fainter lines tentatively detected in some cases (e.g., [O II] $\lambda$3727, [O III] $\lambda$4959). In the [O III]/H$\beta$ - [N II]/H$\alpha$ Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram, these galaxies occupy the same parameter space as that of $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies, indicating that they have been enriched rapidly to sub-solar metallicities ($\sim$0.4 $Z_{\odot}$), similar to galaxies with comparable stellar masses at much lower redshifts. The detection of strong H$\alpha$ lines suggests a higher ionizing photon production efficiency within galaxies in the early Universe. We find brightening of the [O III] $\lambda$5007 line luminosity function (LF) from $z=3$ to 6, and weak or no redshift evolution of the H$\alpha$ line LF from $z=2$ to 6. Both LFs are under-predicted at $z\sim6$ by a factor of $\sim$10 in certain cosmological simulations. This further indicates a global Ly$\alpha$ photon escape fraction of 7-10% at $z\sim6$, slightly lower than previous estimates through the comparison of the UV-derived star-formation rate density and Ly$\alpha$ luminosity density. Our sample recovers $66^{+128}_{-44}$% of $z=6.0-6.6$ galaxies in the survey volume with stellar masses greater than $5\times10^8$ $M_{\odot}$, suggesting the ubiquity of strong H$\alpha$ and [O III] line emitters in the Epoch of Reionization, which will be further uncovered in the era of JWST., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ on May 11, 2023

We report the serendipitous discovery of an [O III] $λλ$4959/5007 and H$α$ line emitter in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) with the JWST commissioning data taken in the NIRCam wide field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) mode. Located $\sim$55" away from the flux calibrator P330-E, this galaxy exhibits bright [O III] $λλ$4959/5007 and H$α$ lines detected at 3.7, 9.9 and 5.7$σ$, respectively, with a spectroscopic redshift of $z=6.112\pm0.001$. The total H$β$+[O III] equivalent width is 664$\pm$98 Å (454$\pm$78 Å from the [O III] $λ$5007 line). This provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the presence of strong rest-frame optical lines (H$β$+[O III] and H$α$) in EoR galaxies as inferred previously from the analyses of Spitzer/IRAC spectral energy distributions. Two spatial and velocity components are identified in this source, possibly indicating that this system is undergoing a major merger, which might have triggered the ongoing starburst with strong nebular emission lines over a timescale of $\sim$2 Myr as our SED modeling suggests. The tentative detection of He II $λ$4686 line ($1.9σ$), if real, may indicate the existence of very young and metal-poor star-forming regions with a hard UV radiation field. Finally, this discovery demonstrates the power and readiness of the JWST/NIRCam WFSS mode, and marks the beginning of a new era for extragalactic astronomy, in which EoR galaxies can be routinely discovered via blind slitless spectroscopy through the detection of rest-frame optical emission lines., 10 pages, 4 figures, published in the ApJL

Using deep rest-frame optical spectroscopy from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysical Census (LEGA-C) survey, conducted using VIMOS on the ESO Very Large Telescope, we systematically search for low-ionization [OII] 3726,3729 emission in the spectra of a mass-complete sample of z~0.85 galaxies. Intriguingly, we find that 59 percent of UVJ-quiescent (i.e. non star-forming) galaxies in the sample have ionized gas, as traced by [OII] emission, detected above our completeness limit of 1.5 Angstroms. The median stacked spectrum of the lowest equivalent width quiescent galaxies also shows [OII] emission. The overall fraction of sources with [OII] above our equivalent width limit is comparable to what we find in the low-redshift Universe from GAMA and MASSIVE, except perhaps at the highest stellar masses (log Mstar/Msol > 11.5). However, stacked spectra for the individual low-equivalent width systems uniquely indicates ubiquitous [OII] emission in the higher-z LEGA-C sample, with typical [OII] luminosities per unit stellar mass that are a factor of 3 larger than the lower-z GAMA sample. Star formation in these otherwise quiescent galaxies could play a role in producing the [OII] emission at higher-z, although it is unlikely to provide the bulk of the ionizing photons. More work is required to fully quantify the contributions of evolved stellar populations or active galactic nuclei to the observed spectra., ApJ accepted: 16 pages, 11 figures

We present a novel Bayesian methodology to jointly model photometry and deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) 2d grism spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies. Our requiem2d code measures both unresolved and resolved stellar populations, ages, and star-formation histories (SFHs) for the ongoing REQIUEM (REsolving QUIEscent Magnified) Galaxies Survey, which targets strong gravitationally lensed quiescent galaxies at z~2. We test the accuracy of \texttt{requiem2d} using a simulated sample of massive galaxies at z~2 from the Illustris cosmological simulation and find we recover the general trends in SFH and median stellar ages. We further present a pilot study for the REQUIEM Galaxies Survey: MRG-S0851, a quintuply-imaged, massive ($\log M_* / M_\odot = 11.02 \pm 0.04$) red galaxy at $z=1.883\pm 0.001$. With an estimated gravitational magnification of $\mu = 5.7^{+0.4}_{-0.2}$, we sample the stellar populations on 0.6 kpc physical size bins. The global mass-weighted median age is constrained to be $1.8_{-0.2}^{+0.3}$ Gyr, and our spatially resolved analysis reveals that MRG-S0851 has a flat age gradient in the inner 3 kpc core after taking into account the subtle effects of dust and metallicity on age measurements, favoring an early formation scenario. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expected to observe galaxies at $z>10$ that are presently inaccessible. Here, we use a self-consistent empirical model, the UniverseMachine, to generate mock galaxy catalogues and lightcones over the redshift range $z=0-15$. These data include realistic galaxy properties (stellar masses, star formation rates, and UV luminosities), galaxy-halo relationships, and galaxy-galaxy clustering. Mock observables are also provided for different model parameters spanning observational uncertainties at $z10^7 M_\odot$ and/or $M_{1500}12$ expand dramatically, so efforts to detect $z>12$ galaxies will provide the most valuable constraints on galaxy formation models. The faint-end slopes of the stellar mass/luminosity functions at a given mass/luminosity threshold steepen as redshift increases. This is because observable galaxies are hosted by haloes in the exponentially falling regime of the halo mass function at high redshifts. Hence, these faint-end slopes are robustly predicted to become shallower below current observable limits ($M_\ast < 10^7M_\odot$ or $M_\mathrm{1500}>-17$). For reionization models, extrapolating luminosity functions with a constant faint-end slope from $M_{1500}=-17$ down to $M_{1500}=-12$ gives the most reasonable upper limit for the total UV luminosity and cosmic star formation rate up to $z\sim 12$. We compare to three other empirical models and one semi-analytic model, showing that the range of predicted observables from our approach encompasses predictions from other techniques. We use the deep CANDELS observations in the GOODS North and South fields to revisit the correlations between stellar mass (M_*), star formation rate (SFR) and morphology, and to introduce a fourth dimension, the mass-weighted stellar age, in galaxies at 1.2 < z < 4. We do this by making new measures of M_*, SFR, and stellar age thanks to an improved SED fitting procedure that allows various star formation history for each galaxy. Like others, we find that the slope of the main sequence (MS) of star formation in the M_*; SFR plane bends at high mass. We observe clear morphological differences among galaxies across the MS, which also correlate with stellar age. At all redshifts, galaxies that are quenching or quenched, and thus old, have high Σ_1 (the projected density within the central 1 kpc), while younger, star-forming galaxies span a much broader range of Σ_1, which includes the high values observed for quenched galaxies, but also extends to much lower values. As galaxies age and quench, the stellar age and the dispersion of Σ_1 for fixed values of M_* shows two different regimes: one at the low-mass end, where quenching might be driven by causes external to the galaxies; the other at the high-mass end, where quenching is driven by internal causes, very likely the mass given the low scatter of Σ_1 (mass quenching). We suggest that the monotonic increase of central density as galaxies grow is one manifestation of a more general phenomenon of structural transformation that galaxies undergo as they evolve.

We present an original phenomenological model to describe the evolution of galaxy number counts, morphologies, and spectral energy distributions across a wide range of redshifts (0.26]. Our model follows observed mass and luminosity functions of both star-forming and quiescent galaxies, and reproduces the redshift evolution of colors, sizes, star-formation and chemical properties of the observed galaxy population. Unlike other existing approaches, our model includes a self-consistent treatment of stellar and photoionized gas emission and dust attenuation based on the BEAGLE tool. The mock galaxy catalogs generated with our new model can be used to simulate and optimize extragalactic surveys with future facilities such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and to enable critical assessments of analysis procedures, interpretation tools, and measurement systematics for both photometric and spectroscopic data. As a first application of this work, we make predictions for the upcoming JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), a joint program of the JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec Guaranteed Time Observations teams. We show that JADES will detect, with NIRCam imaging, thousands of galaxies at z>6, and tens at z>10 at m_AB8, and resolve the current debate about the rate of evolution of galaxies at z>8. We examine the fraction of massive (M* > 1010 M) compact star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) that host an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z ~ 2. These cSFGs are likely the direct progenitors of the compact quiescent galaxies observed at this epoch, which are the first population of passive galaxies to appear in large numbers in the early Universe. We identify cSFGs that host an AGN using a combination of Hubble WFC3 imaging and Chandra X-ray observations in four fields: the Chandra Deep Fields, the Extended Groth Strip, and the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey field. We find that - 39.2+ % 3.6 3.9 (65/166) of cSFGs at 1.4 < z < 3.0 host an X-ray detected AGN. This fraction is 3.2 times higher than the incidence of AGN in extended star-forming galaxies with similar masses at these redshifts. This difference is significant at the 6.2s level. Our results are consistent with models in which cSFGs are formed through a dissipative contraction that triggers a compact starburst and concurrent growth of the central black hole. We also discuss our findings in the context of cosmological galaxy evolution simulations that require feedback energy to rapidly quench cSFGs. We show that the AGN fraction peaks precisely where energy injection is needed to reproduce the decline in the number density of cSFGs with redshift. Our results suggest that the first abundant population of massive quenched galaxies emerged directly following a phase of elevated supermassive black hole growth and further hints at a possible connection between AGN and the rapid quenching of star formation in these galaxies.
