Increasing evidence indicates that silver salts can play a role in the C-H activation step of palladium-catalyzed C-H functionalization. Here we isolate a silver(I) complex by C-H bond activation and demonstrate its catalytic competence for C-H functionalization. We demonstrate how silver carbonate, a common but highly insoluble additive, reacts with pentafluorobenzene in the presence of a bulky phosphine, XPhos, to form the C-H bond activation product Ag(C6F5)(XPhos). By isolating and fully characterizing this complex and the related carbonate and iodide complexes, [Ag(XPhos)]2(μ-κ2,κ2-CO3) and [AgI(XPhos)]2, we show how well-defined Ag(I) complexes can operate in conjunction with palladium complexes to achieve C-H functionalization even at ambient temperature. Reactions are tested against the standard cross-coupling of C6F5H with 4-iodotoluene, catalyzed by palladium acetate at 60 °C in the presence of silver carbonate and Xphos. Key observations are that (a) PdI(C6H5)(XPhos) reacts stoichiometrically with Ag(C6F5)(XPhos) to form Ph-C6F5 instantly at room temperature; (b) catalytic cross coupling can be achieved using 5% Ag(C6F5)(XPhos) as the sole silver source; and (c) palladium acetate (typical precatalyst) can be replaced for catalytic cross coupling by the expected oxidative addition compound PdI(C6H5)(XPhos). These investigations lead to a catalytic cycle in which Ag(I) plays the C-H bond activation role and palladium plays the coupling role. Moreover, we show how the phosphine can be exchanged between silver complexes, ensuring that it is recycled even though silver carbonate is consumed during catalytic cross-coupling.

We report on the characterisation of a number of liquid–crystalline materials featuring cyclic terminal groups, which lead to significant enhancements in the temperature range of the mesomorphic state. Materials with only short terminal chains are able to support lamellar mesophase formation by appending a large terminal cyclic unit at the end of a short spacer composed of methylene units. X-ray scattering experiments reveal that the layer spacings of the lamellar smectic phase are significantly larger when a cyclic end-group is present than for equivalent linear unsubstituted materials, but there is no effect on orientational order. Fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations faithfully reproduce experimental layer spacings and orientational order parameters, and indicate that the cyclic terminal units spontaneously segregate into diffuse sub-layers and thus cause the increased layer spacing. This shape segregation predicted by molecular dynamics simulations is observed in the crystalline solid state by X-ray diffraction.

A novel conjugate addition/ring expansion (CARE) cascade reaction sequence is reported that enables medium-sized ring and macrocyclic bis-lactams to be prepared from primary amines and cyclic imides. The reactions are simple to perform, generally high yielding, and very broad in scope, especially with respect to the primary amine component. CARE reactions can also be performed iteratively, enabling β-peptoid-based macrocyclic peptide mimetics to be 'grown' via well controlled, sequential 4-Atom ring expansion reactions, with the incorporation of varied functionalised amines during each iteration.

Microcrystalline (~1 m) [Rh(Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2)(norbornadiene)][S-BArF4], [S-BArF4] = [B(3,5-(SF5)2C6H3)4]–, reacts with H2 in a single-crystal to single-crystal transformation to form the -alkane complex [Rh(Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2)(norbornane)][S-BArF4], for which the structure was determined by microcrystal Electron Diffraction (microED), to 0.95 Å resolution, via an on-grid hydrogenation, and a complementary single-crystal X-ray diffraction study on larger, but challenging to isolate, crystals. Comparison with the [BArF4]– analogue [ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C5H3)] shows that the [S-BArF4]– anion makes the -alkane complex robust towards decomposition both thermally and when suspended in pentane. Subsequent reactivity with dissolved ethene in a pentane slurry, forms [Rh(Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2)(ethene)2][S-BArF4], and the catalytic dimerisation/isomerisation of ethene to 2-butenes. The increased stability of [S-BArF4]– salts is identified as being due to increased non-covalent interactions in the lattice, resulting in a solid-state molecular organometallic material with desirable stability characteristics.

Tripalladium clusters of the type [Pd3(PPh3)4]2+, wherein three linearly connected Pd atoms are stabilized by phosphine and arsine ligands, have been detected and isolated as intermediates during the reduction of well-defined mononuclear [Pd(OTf)2(XPh3)2] (X = P and X = As, respectively) to Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs). The isolated [Pd3(PPh3)4]2+ cluster isomerizes on broad-band UV irradiation to form an unexpected photoisomer, produced by a remarkable change in conformation at one of the bridging PPh3 ligands. A catalytic role for these [Pd3(XPh3)4]2+ species is exemplified in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMCC) reactions, with high activity seen in the arylation of a brominated heterocyclic 2-pyrone. Use of the [Pd3(PPh3)4]2+ cluster enables a switch in site selectivity for SMCC reactions involving 2,4-dibromopyridine from the typical C2-bromide site (seen previously for mononuclear Pd catalysts) to the atypical C4-bromide site, thereby mirroring recently reported cyclic Pd3 clusters and PdNPs. We have further determined that the thermal isomer and photoisomer of [Pd3(PPh3)4]2+ are similarly catalytically active in the Pd-catalyzed hydrogenation of phenylacetylene to give styrene. Our findings link the evolution of mononuclear Pd(II) salts to PdNPs via the intermediacy of linear [Pd3(XPh3)4]2+ clusters.

Hyperpolarised iridium carboxyimine complexes yield diagnostic signals whilst undergoing ligand exchange processes rationalised by NMR and DFT., We report the formation of a series of novel [Ir(H)2(IMes)(α-13C2-carboxyimine)L] complexes in which the identity of the coligand L is varied. When examined with para-hydrogen, complexes in which L is benzylamine or phenethylamine show significant 1H hydride and 13C2 imine enhancements and may exist in 13C2 singlet spin order. Isotopic labeling techniques are used to double 13C2 enhancements (up to 750-fold) and singlet state lifetimes (up to 20 seconds) compared to those previously reported. Exchange spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory are used to investigate the stability and mechanism of rapid hydrogen exchange in these complexes, a process driven by dissociative coligand loss to form a key five coordinate intermediate. When L is pyridine or imidazole, competitive binding to such intermediates leads to novel complexes whose formation, kinetics, behaviour, structure, and hyperpolarization is investigated. The ratio of the observed PHIP enhancements were found to be affected not only by the hydrogen exchange rates but the identity of the coligands. This ligand reactivity is accompanied by decoherence of any 13C2 singlet order which can be preserved by isotopic labeling. Addition of a thiol coligand proved to yield a thiol oxidative addition product which is characterized by NMR and MS techniques. Significant 870-fold 13C enhancements of pyridine can be achieved using the Signal Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE) process when α-carboxyimines are used to block active coordination sites. [Ir(H)2(IMes)(α-13C2-carboxyimine)L] therefore acts as unique sensors whose 1H hydride chemical shifts and corresponding hyperpolarization levels are indicative of the identity of a coligand and its binding strength.

A side chain insertion method for the ring expansion of lactams into macrocyclic thiolactones is reported, that can also be incorporated into Successive Ring Expansion (SuRE) sequences. The reactions are less thermodynamically favourable than the analogous lactam- and lactone-forming ring expansion processes (with this notion supported by DFT data), but nonetheless, three complementary protecting group strategies have been developed to enable this challenging transformation to be achieved.

Aromatic hydroxylation reactions catalyzed by heme-thiolate enzymes proceed via an epoxide intermediate. These aromatic epoxides could be valuable building blocks for organic synthesis giving access to a range of chiral transdisubstituted cyclohexadiene synthons. Here we show that naphthalene epoxides generated by fungal peroxygenases can be subjected to nucleophilic ring opening yielding non-racemic trans-disubstituted cyclohexadiene derivates, which in turn can be used for further chemical transformations. Following the ring-opening reactions, the synthetic possibility of cyclohexadiene derivates also demonstrated by four examples yielding functional compounds. This novel approach may represent a promising shortcut for the synthesis of natural products and APIs.

Emissive gold(iii) complexes of pincer 2,6-diphenylpyridines also bearing a phenylacetylide ligand have been modified at both the pincer and phenylacetylide to confer liquid crystalline properties, with most complexes showing a columnar hexagonal phase in the condensed phase. Solution NMR studies show a preferred orientation for self-association, consistent with structural parameters in the liquid crystal phase obtained by X-ray methods. While the pattern of substitution of the phenylacetylide has no discernible effect on the photophysics, when two alkoxy chains are attached to the pincer ligands, photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) of around 3% are found, whereas when four alkoxy chains are attached the PLQY increases significantly to 36%. Insight from computational chemistry indicated that the incorporation of the alkoxy donor groups raises the energy of the pincer-based HOMO−1 orbital, with a concomitant lowering of the LUMO ← HOMO−1 transition energy, consistent with an experimentally observed red shift. The gold complexes were fabricated into OLED devices using solution processing methods, being doped into the emissive layer at 5%, leading to external quantum efficiencies of up to 7.14%, values that compare well with those of related complexes in the literature.

N-Substituted derivatives of cantharimide and norcantharimide represent a promising but underutilized motif for therapeutic applications. Herein, we report a divergent strategy for the preparation of secondary amides and norcantharimide-resembling spirocyclic imides from a biomass-derived oxanorbornene and assess their biological activity. Computational modelling suggests these compounds fall perfectly within lead-like chemical space (200 Da < RMM < 350 Da, −1 < AlogP < 3), with the spirocyclic imides preferred due to their lack of reactive functionalities. Biological analysis of the spirocyclic imides revealed that the compounds displayed antiproliferative activity against a range of human cancer cells (A549, HCT 116, OVCAR-3, MDA-MB-231, MCF7 and PC-3) with the N-octyl derivative displaying the greatest potential as a potent broad-spectrum anticancer drug. Dose-response curves for the N-octyl spirocyclic imide found EC50 values of 56–95 μM dependent on the cell line, with highest activity against human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT 116).

The substrate scope of sulfoxide-containing magnetisation transfer catalysts is extended to hyperpolarize α-ketoisocaproate and α-ketoisocaproate-1-[13C]. This is achieved by forming [Ir(H)2(κ2-ketoisocaproate)(N-heterocyclic carbene)(sulfoxide)] which transfers latent magnetism from p-H2 via the signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE) process. The effect of polarization transfer field on the formation of enhanced 13C magnetization is evaluated. Consequently, performing SABRE in a 0.5 µT field enabled most efficient magnetisation transfer. 13C NMR signals for α-ketoisocaproate-1-[13C] in methanol-d4 are up to 985-fold more intense than their traditional Boltzmann derived signal intensity (0.8% 13C polarisation). Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the formation of the novel catalyst decomposition products [Ir(µ-H)(H)2(IMes)(SO(Ph)(Me)2)]2 and [(Ir(H)2(IMes)(SO(Me)2))2(µ-S)] when the sulfoxides methylphenylsulfoxide and dimethylsulfoxide are used respectively.

The catalytic signal amplification by reversible exchange process is used widely to improve the magnetic resonance detectability of small molecules by hyperpolarisation., The catalytic signal amplification by reversible exchange process has become widely used for the hyperpolarisation of small molecules to improve their magnetic resonance detectability. It harnesses the latent polarisation of parahydrogen, and involves the formation of a labile metal complex that often contains an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand (e.g. [Ir(H)2(NHC)(pyridine)3]Cl), which act as a polarisation transfer catalyst. Unfortunately, if the target molecule is too bulky, binding to the catalyst is poor and the hyperpolarisation yield is therefore low. We illustrate here the behaviour of a series of asymmetric NHC containing catalysts towards 3,4- and 3,5-lutidine in order to show how catalyst design can be used to dramatically improve the outcome of this catalytic process for sterically encumbered ligands.

Vinyl sulfoxides are an important functional group used in a wide range of organic transformations. Here, we use [IrCl(COD)(IMes)] where IMes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethyl-phenyl)imidazole-2-ylidene and COD = cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene to rapidly hydrogenate phenylvinylsulfoxide. We use ParaHydrogen Induced Hyperpolarization (PHIP) to follow this reaction with [IrCl(H)2(IMes)(S(O)(Ph)(Et))2] dominating in the later stages. Decomposition to form the reduced C-S bond cleaved product [Ir2(H)3(κ2-H)(κ2-SPh)2(IMes)2(S(Et)(Ph)O)] limits turnover. The related product [Ir2(H)4(κ2-S)(IMes)2(S(O)(CH2Ph)2)2] is formed from dibenzylsulfoxide demonstrating the wider utility of this transformation.

Studies of X–Ni–C6F4I···X–Ni–C6F4I halogen-bonded networks reveal pronounced differences between fluoride (X = F) and other halides: the 19F-MAS NMR spectrum is a sensitive probe of the halogen bond., The syntheses of three series of complexes designed with self-complementary motifs for formation of halogen bonds between an iodotetrafluorophenyl ligand and a halide ligand at square-planar nickel are reported, allowing structural comparisons of halogen bonding between all four halides C6F4I···X–Ni (X = F, Cl, Br, I). In the series trans-[NiX(2,3,5,6-C6F4I)(PEt3)2] 1pX and trans-[NiX(2,3,4,5-C6F4I)(PEt3)2] (X = F, Cl, Br, I) 1oX, the iodine substituent on the benzene ring was positioned para and ortho to the metal, respectively. The phosphine substituents were varied in the series, trans-[NiX(2,3,5,6-C6F4I)(PEt2Ph)2] (X = F, I) 2pX. Crystal structures were obtained for the complete series 1pX, and for 1oF, 1oCl, 1oI and 2pI. All these complexes exhibited halogen bonds in the solid state, of which 1pF exhibited unique characteristics with a linear chain, the shortest halogen bond d(C6F4I···F–Ni) = 2.655(5) Å and the greatest reduction in halogen bond distance (I···F) compared to the sum of the Bondi van der Waals radii, 23%. The remaining complexes form zig-zag chains of halogen bonds with distances also reduced with respect to the sum of the van der Waals radii. The magnitude of the reductions follow the pattern F > Cl ∼ Br > I, 1pX > 1oX, consistent with the halogen bond strength following the same order. The variation in the I···X–Ni angles is consistent with the anisotropic charge distribution of the halide ligand. The temperature dependence of the X-ray structure of 1pF revealed a reduction in halogen bond distance of 0.055(7) Å on cooling from 240 to 111 K. Comparison of three polymorphs of 1oI shows that the halogen bond geometry may be altered significantly by the crystalline environment. The effect of the halogen bond on the 19F NMR chemical shift in the solid state is demonstrated by comparison of the magic-angle spinning NMR spectra of 1pF and 1oF with that of a complex incapable of halogen bond formation, trans-[NiF(C6F5)(PEt3)2] 3F. Halogen bonding causes deshielding of δiso in the component of the tensor perpendicular to the nickel coordination plane. The results demonstrate the potential of fluoride ligands for formation of halogen bonds in supramolecular structures.

The hyperpolarisation of the 119Sn and 29Si nuclei in 5-(tributylstannyl)pyrimidine (A Sn) and 5-(trimethylsilyl)pyrimidine (B Si) is achieved through their reaction with [IrCl(COD)(IMes)] (1a) or [IrCl(COD)(SIMes)] (1b) and parahydrogen via the SABRE process., The hyperpolarisation of the 119Sn and 29Si nuclei in 5-(tributylstannyl)pyrimidine (A Sn) and 5-(trimethylsilyl)pyrimidine (B Si) is achieved through their reaction with [IrCl(COD)(IMes)] (1a) or [IrCl(COD)(SIMes)] (1b) and parahydrogen via the SABRE process. 1a exhibits superior activity in both cases. The two inequivalent pyrimidine proton environments of A Sn readily yielded signal enhancements totalling ∼2300-fold in its 1H NMR spectrum at a field strength of 9.4 T, with the corresponding 119Sn signal being 700 times stronger than normal. In contrast, B Si produced analogous 1H signal gains of ∼2400-fold and a 29Si signal that could be detected with a signal to noise ratio of 200 in a single scan. These sensitivity improvements allow NMR detection within seconds using micromole amounts of substrate and illustrate the analytical potential of this approach for high-sensitivity screening. Furthermore, after extended reaction times, a series of novel iridium trimers of general form [Ir(H)2Cl(NHC)(μ-pyrimidine-κN:κN′)]3 precipitate from these solutions whose identity was confirmed crystallographically for B Si.

Signal Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE) is a hyperpolarisation technique that commonly uses [Ir(H)2(carbene)(substrate)3]Cl complexes to catalytically transfer magnetisation from para-hydrogen derived hydride ligands to coordinated substrates. Here, we explore the reactivity of a novel class of such catalysts based on sulfoxide containing [IrCl(H)2(carbene)(DMSO)2], which are involved in the hyperpolarisation of pyruvate using SABRE. We probe the reactivity of this species by NMR and DFT and upon reaction with sodium pyruvate establish the formation of two isomers of [Ir(H)2(η2-pyruvate)(DMSO)(IMes)]. Studies with related disodium oxalate yield [Ir2(H)4(IMes)2(DMSO)2(κ2-η2-Oxalate)] that is characterised by NMR and X-ray diffraction.

Oxazolidinone synthesis through the coupling of carbon dioxide and aziridines was catalysed by an aluminium(salphen) complex at 50–100 °C and 1–10 bar pressure under solvent-free conditions. The process was applicable to a variety of substituted aziridines, giving products with high regioselectivity. It involved the use of a sustainable and reusable aluminium-based catalyst, used carbon dioxide as a C1 source and provided access to pharmaceutically important oxazolidinones as illustrated by a total synthesis of toloxatone. This protocol was scalable, and the catalyst could be recovered and reused. A catalytic cycle was proposed based on stereochemical, kinetic and Hammett studies.

Ionic, tetracatenar liquid crystals containing an N-phenylpyridinum core are described; many of these compounds display a SmA phase, something extremely rare in tetracatenar materials. The competing forces driving mesophase formation lead to an unprecedented difference in phase stabilities for SmA and Colh phases.

Well-controlled and extremely rapid ring-opening metathesis polymerization of unusual oxanorbornene lactam esters by Grubbs third-generation catalyst is used to prepare a range of bio-based homo- and copolymers. Bio-derived oxanorbornene lactam monomers were prepared at room temperature from maleic anhydride and secondary furfuryl amines by using a 100 % atom economical, tandem Diels–Alder lactamization reaction, followed by esterification. Several of the resulting homo- and copolymers show good control over polymer molecular weight and have narrow molecular weight distributions.

N,N′-Phenylenebis(5-tert-butylsalicylideneimine) is shown to be an effective single-component catalyst for the metal- and halide-free synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and carbon dioxide. Using this bis-phenolic catalyst, a series of eight epoxides has been converted into the corresponding cyclic carbonates. Many closely related catalyst structures were found to be catalytically inactive, and the structural features necessary for catalytic activity have been delineated. Unusually, reactions could be carried out under solvent-free conditions or in the green solvents 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) and propylene carbonate. Stereochemical studies showed that carbon dioxide insertion occurs exclusively at the terminal end of the epoxide and does so with loss of stereochemical purity if a 1-deutero-2-alkyl epoxide is used as substrate. On the basis of this evidence, a dual activation mechanism is proposed in which one phenol acts as a Brønsted acid to activate the epoxide, while the other reacts with carbon dioxide to form a carbonic half-ester intermediate which then ring-opens the activated epoxide. Two pathways are subsequently available for cyclization to a cyclic carbonate which have opposite stereochemical consequences. The experimental results suggest that ring-opening of the epoxide by the carbonic half-ester is the rate-determining step of the catalytic cycle.

A range of iridium complexes, Ir(η3-C3H5)(CO)(PR2R’)2 (1a-1e) [where 1a, PR2R’ = PPh3, 1b P(p-tol)3, 1c PMePh2, 1d PMe2Ph and 1e PMe3] were synthesized and their reactivity as stoichiometric hydroformylation precursors studied. Para-hydrogen assisted NMR spectroscopy detected the following intermediates: Ir(H)2(η3-C3H5)(CO)(PR2R’) (2a-e), Ir(H)2(η1-C3H5)(CO)(PR2R’)2 (4d-e), Ir(H)2(η1-C3H5)(CO)2(PR2R’) (10a-e), Ir(H)2(CO-C3H5)(CO)2(PR2R’) (11a-c), Ir(H)2(CO-C3H7)(CO)2(PR2R’) (12a-c) and Ir(H)2(CO-C3H5)(CO)(PR2R’)2 (13d-e). Some of these species exist as two geometric isomers according to their multinuclear NMR characteristics. The NMR studies suggest a role for the following 16 electron species in these reactions: Ir(η3-C3H5)(CO)(PR2R’), Ir(η1-C3H5)(CO)(PR2R’)2, Ir(η1-C3H5)(CO)2(PR2R’), Ir(CO-C3H5)(CO)2(PR2R’), Ir(CO-C3H7)(CO)2(PR2R’) and Ir(CO-C3H5)(CO)(PR2R’)2. Their role is linked to several 18 electron species in order to confirm the route by which hydroformylation and hydrogenation proceeds.

Eight novel liquid crystalline materials were prepared containing highly branched terminal chains, either 2,4,4-trimethylpentyl or 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl. All materials exhibit nematic mesophases, with additional smectic (Sm) C, hexatic B and SmI phases for certain homologues. Analysis by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering reveals continual build-up of the correlation length within the nematic phases, where we also observe splitting of the small angle peak into four lobes, indicating pretransitional Sm fluctuations. Connoscopy confirms the nematic phase to be uniaxial and optically positive. We observe that in the solid state, the molecules exist as staggered antiparallel pairs as a consequence of the sterically demanding bulky terminal group, and this would also appear to manifest in the hexatic B phase, where the layer spacing was found to be greater than the molecular length. If true, this is an example of pair formation driven by sterics rather than dipole–dipole interactions and suggests that reentrant systems driven purely by steric frustration may be found.

A dinuclear, butadiene-bridged complex, trans-μ2:η2,η2-1,3-butadiene-bis(trichloroplatinate(ii)) (1) was unexpectedly obtained on photolysis of acetone solutions of (NBu4)2[PtCl6].

Iridium N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes catalyze the para-hydrogen-induced hyperpolarization process, Signal Amplification by Reversible Exchange (SABRE). This process transfers the latent magnetism of para-hydrogen into a substrate, without changing its chemical identity, to dramatically improve its nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) detectability. By synthesizing and examining over 30 novel NHC containing complexes, here we rationalize the key characteristics of efficient SABRE catalysis prior to using appropriate catalyst-substrate combinations to quantify the substrate’s NMR detectability. These optimizations deliver polarizations of 63% for 1H nuclei in methyl 4,6-d2-nicotinate, 25% for 13C nuclei in a 13C2-diphenylpyridazine and 43% for the 15N nucleus of pyridine-15N. These high detectability levels compare favorably with the 0.0005% 1H value harnessed by a routine 1.5 T clinical MRI system. As signal strength scales with the square of the number of observations, these low cost innovations which are achieved in just a few seconds reflectoffer remarkable improvements in detectability threshold that offer routes to significantly reduce measurement time.

The formation and hyperpolarization of an [Ir(H)2(amine)(IMes)(η2-imine)]Cl complex that can be created in a hyperpolarized nuclear singlet state is reported. These complexes are formed when an equilibrium mixture of pyruvate, amine (benzylamine or phenylethylamine), and the corresponding imine condensation product, react with preformed [Ir(H)2(amine)3(IMes)]Cl. These iridium -carboxyimine complexes exist as two regioisomers differentiated by the position of amine. When examined with para-hydrogen the hydride resonances of the isomer with amine trans to hydride become strongly hyperpolarized. The initial hydride singlet states readily transfer to the corresponding 13C2 state in the labelled imine and exhibit magnetic state lifetimes of up to 11 seconds. Their 13C signals have been detected with up to 420 fold signal gains at 9.4 T. On a longer timescale, and in the absence of H2, further reaction leads to the formation of neutral carbonate containing [Ir(amine)(η2-CO3)(IMes)(η2-imine)]. Complexes are characterized by, IR, MS, NMR and X-ray diffraction.

The catalytic signal amplification process has become widely used for the hyperpolarisation of small molecules to improve their magnetic resonance detectability. It harnesses the latent polarisation of parahydrogen, and involves the formation of labile metal complex that often contains an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand (e.g. [Ir(H)2(NHC)(pyridine)3]Cl), which act as a polarisation transfer catalyst. Unfortunately, if the target molecule is too bulky, binding to the catalyst is poor and the hyperpolarisation yield is therefore low. We illustrate here the behaviour of a series of asymmetric NHC containing catalysts towards 3,4- and 3,5-lutidine in order to show how catalyst design can be used to dramatically improve the outcome of this catalytic process for sterically encumbered ligands.

A novel scaffold for the construction of self-organised ionic liquids and ionic liquid crystals bearing both perfluorocarbon and hydrocarbon moieties has been developed. The phase behaviour and physical properties of these materials can be tuned as a function of chain length and fluorine content and significant structural elaboration is possible, giving a highly flexible system.

The syntheses of three series of complexes designed with self-complementary motifs for formation of halogen bonds between an iodotetrafluorophenyl ligand and a halide ligand at square-planar nickel are reported, allowing structural comparisons of halogen bonding between all four halides C6F4IX–Ni (X = F, Cl, Br, I). In the series, trans-[NiX(2,3,5,6-C6F4I)(PEt3)2] 1pX and trans-[NiX(2,3,4,5-C6F4I)(PEt3)2] (X = F, Cl, Br, I) 1oX, the iodine substituent on the benzene ring was positioned para and ortho to the metal, respectively. The phosphine substituents were varied in the series, trans-[NiX(2,3,5,6-C6F4I)(PEt2Ph)2] (X = F, I) 2pX. Crystal structures were obtained for the complete series 1pX, and for 1oF, 1oCl, 1oI and 2pI. All these complexes exhibited halogen bonds in the solid state, of which 1pF exhibited unique characteristics with a linear chain, the shortest halogen bond d(C6F4IF–Ni) = 2.655(5) Å and the greatest reduction in halogen bond distance (IF) compared to the sum of the Bondi van der Waals radii, 23%. The remaining complexes form zig-zag chains of halogen bonds with distances also reduced with respect to the sum of the van der Waals radii. The magnitude of the reductions follow the pattern F > Cl ~ Br > I, 1pX > 1oX, consistent with the halogen bond strength following the same order. The variation in the IX–Ni angles is consistent with the anisotropic charge distribution of the halide ligand. The temperature dependence of the X-ray structure of 1pF revealed a reduction in halogen bond distance of 0.055(7) Å on cooling from 240 to 111 K. Comparison of three polymorphs of 1oI shows that the halogen bond geometry may be altered significantly by the crystalline environment. The effect of the halogen bond on the 19F NMR chemical shift in the solid state is demonstrated by comparison of the magic-angle spinning NMR spectra of 1pF and 1oF with that of a complex incapable of halogen bond formation, trans-[NiF(C6F5)(PEt3)2] 3F. Halogen bonding causes deshielding of iso in the component of the tensor perpendicular to the nickel coordination plane. The results demonstrate the potential of fluoride ligands for formation of halogen bonds in supramolecular structures.

Eight novel liquid crystalline materials were prepared containing highly branched terminal chains, either 2,4,4-trimethylpentyl or 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl. All materials exhibit nematic mesophases, with additional smectic (Sm) C, hexatic B and SmI phases for certain homologues. Analysis by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering reveals continual build-up of the correlation length within the nematic phases, where we also observe splitting of the small angle peak into four lobes, indicating pretransitional Sm fluctuations. Connoscopy confirms the nematic phase to be uniaxial and optically positive. We observe that in the solid state, the molecules exist as staggered antiparallel pairs as a consequence of the sterically demanding bulky terminal group, and this would also appear to manifest in the hexatic B phase, where the layer spacing was found to be greater than the molecular length. If true, this is an example of pair formation driven by sterics rather than dipole–dipole interactions and suggests that reentrant systems driven purely by steric frustration may be found.

A regioselective Pd-mediated C–H bond arylation methodology for tryptophans, utilizing stable aryldiazonium salts, affords C2-arylated tryptophan derivatives, in several cases quantitatively. The reactions proceed under air, without base and at room temperature in EtOAc. The synthetic methodology has been evaluated and compared against other tryptophan derivative arylation methods using the CHEM21 Green Chemistry Toolkit. The behavior of the Pd catalyst species has been probed in preliminary mechanistic studies, which indicates that the reaction is operating homogeneously, although Pd nanoparticles are formed during substrate turnover. The impact of these higher order Pd species on catalysis, under the reaction conditions examined, appear to be minimal, e.g. acting as a Pd reservoir in the latter stages of substrate turnover or as a moribund-form (derived from catalyst deactivation). We have determined that TsOH shortens the induction period observed when employing [ArN2]BF4 salts with Pd(OAc)2. Pd(OTs)2(MeCN)2 was found to be a superior precatalyst (confirmed by kinetic studies) to Pd(OAc)2.

The facile synthesis of a stable and isolable compound with a fluoroalkynyl group, M−C≡CF, is reported. Reaction of [Ru(C≡CH)(η 5-C 5Me 5)(dppe)] with an electrophilic fluorinating agent (NFSI) results in the formation of the fluorovinylidene complex [Ru(=C=CHF)(η 5-C 5Me 5)(dppe)][N(SO 2Ph) 2]. Subsequent deprotonation with LiN(SiMe 3) 2 affords the fluoroalkynyl complex [Ru(C≡CF)(η 5-C 5Me 5)(dppe)]. In marked contrast to the rare and highly reactive examples of fluoroalkynes that have been reported previously, this compound can be readily isolated and structurally characterized. This has allowed the structure and bonding in the CCF motif to be explored. Further electrophilic fluorination of this species yields the difluorovinylidene complex [Ru(C=CF 2)(η 5-C 5Me 5)(dppe)][N(SO 2Ph) 2].

This study describes the synthesis and characterization of a new class of ferrocene-containing carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (CORMs, 1-3). The ferrocenyl group is both a recognized therapeutically viable co-ligand and a handle for informative infrared spectroelectrochemistry. Deoxy-myoglobin CO-release assays and in situ infrared spectroscopy confirm compounds 2 and 3 as photoCORMs and 1 as a thermal CORM, attributed to the increased sensitivity of the Mn-ferrocenyl bond to protonation in 1. Electrochemical and infrared spectroelectrochemical experiments confirm a single reversible redox couple associated with the ferrocenyl moiety with the Mn tetracarbonyl center showing no redox activity up to +590 mV vs Fc/Fc+, though no concomitant CO release was observed in association with the redox activity. The effects of linker length on communication between the Fe and Mn centers suggest the incorporation of redox-active ligands into CORMs focus on the first coordination sphere of the CORM. Redox-tagged CORMs could prove to be a useful mechanistic probe; our findings could be developed to use redox changes to trigger CO-release.

NaNO3 is used in oxidative Pd-catalyzed processes as a complementary co-catalyst to common oxidants, e.g., CuII salts, in C−H bond activation and Wacker oxidation processes. NaNO3 and NaNO2 (with air or O2) assist the sp3-C−H bond acetoxylation of substrates bearing an Ndirecting group. It has been proposed previously that a redox couple is operative. The role played by NOx anions is examined in this investigation. Evidence for an NOx anion interaction at PdII is presented. Palladacyclic complexes containing NOx anions are competent catalysts for acetoxylation of 8-methylquinoline, with and without exogenous NaNO3. The oxidation of 8-methylquinoline to the corresponding carboxylic acid has also been noted at PdII. 18O-Labeling studies indicate that oxygen derived from nitrate appears in the acetoxylation product, the transfer of which can only occur by interaction of 18O at Pd with a coordinating-acetate ligand. Nitrated organic intermediates are formed under catalytic conditions, which are converted to acetoxylation products, a process that occurs with(50 °C) and without Pd (110 °C). A catalytically competent palladacyclic dimer intermediate has been identified. Head-space analysis measurements show that NO and NO2 gases are formed within minutes on heating catalytic mixtures to 110 °C from room temperature. Measurements by in situ infrared spectroscopy show that N2O is formed in sp3-C−H acetoxylation reactions at 80 °C. Studies confirm that cyclopalladated NO2 complexes are rapidly oxidized to the corresponding NO3 adducts on exposure to NO2(g). The investigation shows that NOx anions act as participating ligands at PdII in aerobic sp3-C−H bond acetoxylation processes and are involved in redox processes.

[IrCl(COE)2]2 ( 1 ) reacts with pyridine and H2 to form crystallo-graphically characterized IrCl(H)2(COE)(py)2 ( 2 ). 2 undergoes pyridine loss to form 16-electron IrCl(H)2(COE)(py) (3) with equivalent hydride ligands. When this reaction is studied with parahydrogen, 1 efficiently achieves the hyperpolarization of free pyridine (and nicotinamide, nicotine, 5-aminopyrimidine and 3,5-lutudine) via signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE) and hence reflects a simple and readily available precatayst for this process. 2 reacts further over 48 hrs at 298 K to form crystallographically characterized (Cl)(H)(py)(μ-Cl)(μ-H)(κ-μ-NC5H4)Ir(H)(py)2 (4). This dimer is shown to be active in the hydrogen isotope exchange process that is used in radiophar-maceutical preparations. Furthermore, while [Ir(H)2(COE)(py)3]PF6 ( 6 ) forms on addition of AgPF6 to 2 , its stability precludes its efficient involvement in SABRE.

A new class of carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (CO-RMs) are reported based on a previously known tetracarbonyl phenylpyridine manganese(I) motif. A pre-functionalized CO-RM undergoes a direct Pd-catalysed Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling with phenylboronic acid to give a π-extended three-ring CO-RM. Cross-coupling conditions were modified to allow coupling of a morpholine-containing boronic acid on to a CO-RM, introducing drug-like functionality. An LED system was used to facilitate controlled CO-release. Irradiation using an LED (400 nm or 365 nm) gives rise to faster CO-release, with lower overall input power than traditional use of a TLC lamp (365 nm), as measured by an assay based on the conversion of deoxymyoglobin to carbonmonoxymyoglobin.

The luminescent and mesomorphic properties of a series of metal complexes based on hexacatenar 2,2':6',2''-terpyridines are investigated using experimental methods and density functional theory (DFT). Two types of ligand are examined, namely 5,5''-di(3,4,5-trialkoxyphenyl)terpyridine with or without a fused cyclopentene ring on each pyridine and their complexes were prepared with the following transition metals: ZnII, CoIII, RhIII, IrIII, EuIII and DyIII. The exact geometry of some of these complexes was determined by single X-ray diffraction. All complexes with long alkyl chains were found to be liquid crystalline, which property was induced on complexation. The liquid-crystalline behaviour of the complexes was studied by polarising optical microscopy and small-angle X-ray diffraction. Some of the transition metal complexes (for example, those with ZnII and IrIII) are luminescent in solution, the solid state and the mesophase; their photophysical properties were studied both experimentally and using DFT methods (M06-2X and B3LYP).

A new oxa-norbornene bio-based lactone obtained from the 100% atom economic reaction of furfuryl alcohol and itaconic anhydride via a tandem Diels-Alder addition and lactonisation is presented. Esterification of the resulting acid gives a monomer for the production of a bio-based polymer with low polydispersity and well controlled molecular weight via ring-opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP).

A computational study of the C(methyl)–O bond activation of fluorinated aryl methyl ethers by a platinum(0) complex Pt(PCyp3)2 (Cyp = cyclopentyl) (N. A. Jasim, R. N. Perutz, B. Procacci and A. C. Whitwood, Chem. Commun., 2014, 50, 3914) demonstrates that the reaction proceeds via an SN2 mechanism. Nucleophilic attack of Pt(0) generates an ion pair consisting of a T-shaped platinum cation with an agostic interaction with a cyclopentyl group and a fluoroaryloxy anion. This ion-pair is converted to a 4-coordinate Pt(II) product trans-[PtMe(OArF)(PCyp3)2]. Structure-reactivity correlations are fully consistent with this mechanism. The Gibbs energy of activation is calculated to be substantially higher for aryl methyl ethers without fluorine substituents and higher still for alkyl methyl ethers. These conclusions are in accord with the experimental results. Further support was obtained in an experimental study of the reaction of Pt(PCy3)2 with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-allyloxypyridine yielding the salt of the Pt(η3-allyl) cation and the tetrafluoropyridinolate anion [Pt(PCy3)2(η3-allyl)][OC5NF4]. The calculated activation energy for this reaction is significantly lower than that for fluorinated aryl methyl ethers.

The association constants and enthalpies for the binding of hydrogen bond donors to group 10 transition metal complexes featuring a single fluoride ligand (trans-[Ni(F)(2-C5NF4)(PR3)2], R = Et 1a, Cy 1b, trans-[Pd(F)(4-C5NF4)(PCy3)2] 2, trans-[Pt(F){2-C5NF2H(CF3)}(PCy3)2] 3 and of group 4 difluorides (Cp2MF2, M = Ti 4a, Zr 5a, Hf 6a; Cp2MF2, M = Ti 4b, Zr 5b, Hf 6b) are reported. These measurements allow placement of these fluoride ligands on the scales of organic H-bond acceptor strength. The H-bond acceptor capability β (Hunter scale) for the group 10 metal fluorides is far greater (1a 12.1, 1b 9.7, 2 11.6, 3 11.0) than that for group 4 metal fluorides (4a 5.8, 5a 4.7, 6a 4.7, 4b 6.9, 5b 5.6, 6b 5.4), demonstrating that the group 10 fluorides are comparable to the strongest organic H-bond acceptors, such as Me3NO, whereas group 4 fluorides fall in the same range as N-bases aniline through pyridine. Additionally, the measurement of the binding enthalpy of 4-fluorophenol to 1a in carbon tetrachloride (?23.5 ± 0.3 kJ mol-1) interlocks our study with Laurence's scale of H-bond basicity of organic molecules. The much greater polarity of group 10 metal fluorides than that of the group 4 metal fluorides is consistent with the importance of p?-d? bonding in the latter. The polarity of the group 10 metal fluorides indicates their potential as building blocks for hydrogen-bonded assemblies. The synthesis of trans-[Ni(F){2-C5NF3(NH2)}(PEt3)2], which exhibits an extended chain structure assembled by hydrogen bonds between the amine and metal-fluoride groups, confirms this hypothesis.

We report a study of the photocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to CO by zinc porphyrins covalently linked to [ReI(2,2′-bipyridine)(CO)₃L]⁺/⁰ moieties with visible light of wavelength >520 nm. Dyad 1 contains an amide C₆H₄NHC(O) link from porphyrin to bipyridine (Bpy), Dyad 2 contains an additional methoxybenzamide within the bridge C₆H₄NHC(O)C₆H₃(OMe)NHC(O), while Dyad 3 has a saturated bridge C₆H₄NHC(O)CH₂; each dyad is studied with either L = Br or 3-picoline. The syntheses, spectroscopic characterisation and cyclic voltammetry of Dyad 3 Br and [Dyad 3 pic]OTf are described. The photocatalytic performance of [Dyad 3 pic]OTf in DMF/triethanolamine (5 : 1) is approximately an order of magnitude better than [Dyad 1 pic]PF₆ or [Dyad 2 pic]OTf in turnover frequency and turnover number, reaching a turnover number of 360. The performance of the dyads with Re–Br units is very similar to that of the dyads with [Re–pic]⁺ units in spite of the adverse free energy of electron transfer. The dyads undergo reactions during photocatalysis: hydrogenation of the porphyrin to form chlorin and isobacteriochlorin units is detected by visible absorption spectroscopy, while IR spectroscopy reveals replacement of the axial ligand by a triethanolaminato group and insertion of CO₂into the latter to form a carbonate. Time-resolved IR spectra of [Dyad 2 pic]OTf and [Dyad 3 pic]OTf (560 nm excitation in CH₂Cl₂) demonstrated electron transfer from porphyrin to Re(Bpy) units resulting in a shift of ν(CO) bands to low wavenumbers. The rise time of the charge-separated species for [Dyad 3 pic]OTf is longest at 8 (±1) ps and its lifetime is also the longest at 320 (±15) ps. The TRIR spectra of Dyad 1 Br and Dyad 2 Br are quite different showing a mixture of 3MLCT, IL and charge-separated excited states. In the case of Dyad 3 Br, the charge-separated state is absent altogether. The TRIR spectra emphasize the very different excited states of the bromide complexes and the picoline complexes. Thus, the similarity of the photocatalytic data for bromide and picoline dyads suggests that they share common intermediates. Most likely, these involve hydrogenation of the porphyrin and substitution of the axial ligand at rhenium.

The coordination modes of the [Au(PPh3)](+) cation to metal alkynyl complexes have been investigated. On addition to ruthenium, a vinylidene complex, [Ru(η(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)2([double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh{AuPPh3})](+), is obtained while addition to a gold(iii) compound gives di- and trinuclear gold complexes depending on the conditions employed. In the trinuclear species, a gold(i) cation is sandwiched between two gold(iii) alkynyl complexes, suggesting that coordination of multiple C-C triple bonds to gold is facile.

The photocatalytic activity of phosphonated Re complexes, [Re(2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-bisphosphonic acid) (CO)3(L)] (ReP; L = 3-picoline or bromide) immobilised on TiO2 nanoparticles is reported. The heterogenised Re catalyst on the semiconductor, ReP-TiO2 hybrid, displays an improvement in CO2 reduction photocatalysis. A high turnover number (TON) of 48 molCO molRe(-1) is observed in DMF with the electron donor triethanolamine at λ>420 nm. ReP-TiO2 compares favourably to previously reported homogeneous systems and is the highest TON reported to date for a CO2-reducing Re photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is even observed with ReP-TiO2 at wavelengths of λ>495 nm. Infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies confirm that an intact ReP catalyst is present on the TiO2 surface before and during catalysis. Transient absorption spectroscopy suggests that the high activity upon heterogenisation is due to an increase in the lifetime of the immobilised anionic Re intermediate (t50% >1 s for ReP-TiO2 compared with t50% = 60 ms for ReP in solution) and immobilisation might also reduce the formation of inactive Re dimers. This study demonstrates that the activity of a homogeneous photocatalyst can be improved through immobilisation on a metal oxide surface by favourably modifying its photochemical kinetics.

The photochemical reactions of Tp′Rh(PMe3)H2 (1) and thermal reactions of Tp′Rh(PMe3)(CH3)H (1a, Tp′ = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate) with substrates containing B-H, Si-H, C-F, and C-H bonds are reported. Complexes 1 and 1a are known activators of C-H bonds, including those of alkanes. Kinetic studies of reactions with HBpin and PhSiH3 show that photodissociation of H2 from 1 occurs prior to substrate attack, whereas thermal reaction of 1a proceeds by bimolecular reaction with the substrate. Complete intramolecular selectivity for B-H over C-H activation of HBpin (pin = pinacolate) leading to Tp′ Rh-(PMe3)(Bpin)H is observed. Similarly, the reaction with Et2SiH2 shows a strong preference for Si-H over C-H activation, generating Tp′Rh-(PMe3)(SiEt2H)H. The Rh(Bpin)H and Rh(SiEt2H)H products were stable to heating in benzene in accord with DFT calculations that showed that reaction with benzene is endoergic. The intramolecular competition with PhSiH3 yields a ∼1:4 mixture of Tp′Rh(PMe3)(C6H4SiH3)H and Tp′Rh(PMe3)(SiPhH2)H, respectively. Reaction with pentafluoropyridine generates Tp′Rh(PMe3)(C5NF4)F, while reaction with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine yields a mixture of C-H and C-F activated products. Hexa fluorobenzene proves unreactive. Crystal structures are reported for B-H, Si-H, and C-F activated products, but in the latter case a bifluoride complex Tp′Rh(PMe3)(C5NF4)(FHF) was crystallized. Intermolecular competition reactions were studied by photoreaction of 1 in C6F6 with benzene and another substrate (HBpin, PhSiH3, or pentafluoropyridine) employing in situ laser photolysis in the NMR probe, resulting in a wide-ranging map of kinetic selectivities. The mechanisms of intramolecular and intermolecular selection are analyzed. (Chemical Equation Presented).

Marine faunal remains from Grotta d’Oriente (Favignana Island, NW Sicily) offer invaluable snapshots of human-coastal environment interaction in the central Mediterranean from the Late Pleistocene to the Middle Holocene. The long-term shellfish and fish records reflect human exploitation of coastal environments undergoing considerable reorganizations during the postglacial sea level rise and the progressive isolation of Favignana from mainland Sicily. We detected an intensification of marine resource exploitation between ∼9.6 ka and ∼7.8 ka BP, which corresponds with the isolation of Favignana Island and, later on, with the introduction of early agro-pastoral economy in this region. We suggest that a higher investment in marine resource exploitation by late foragers and early farmers in NW Sicily was also supported by an increase in marine productivity in the south Tyrrhenian Sea in the Middle Holocene.
