Background The benefits of low-dose ketamine for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and prominent suicidal ideation require further investigation. The effects of treatment refractoriness, the duration of the current depressive episode, and the number of prior antidepressant failures on ketamine efficacy also require clarification. Methods We recruited 84 outpatients with TRD and prominent suicidal ideation—defined as a score ≥4 on item 10 of the Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS)—and randomized them into 2 groups to receive 0.5 mg/kg ketamine or 0.045 mg/kg midazolam. We assessed depressive and suicidal symptoms prior to infusion; 240 minutes post infusion; and 2, 3, 5, 7, and 14 days post infusion. Results According to the MADRS scores, the antidepressant effect (P = .035) was significantly noted in the ketamine group up to 14 days than in the midazolam group. However, the antisuicidal effect of ketamine, as measured by the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale Ideation Severity Subscale (P = .040) and MADRS item 10 (P = .023), persisted only 5 days post infusion. Furthermore, the antidepressant and antisuicidal effects of ketamine infusion were noted particularly in patients whose current depressive episode lasted Conclusions Low-dose ketamine infusion is a safe, tolerable, and effective treatment for patients with TRD and prominent suicidal ideation. Our study highlights the importance of timing; specifically, ketamine is more likely to achieve therapeutic response when the current depressive episode lasted

To evaluate the neurodevelopmental outcomes in premature infants who received intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections to treat retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).Retrospective cohort study.This study was conducted using the database from the Taiwan Premature Infant Follow-up Network. Demographic data, systemic risk factors, ROP status, and neurodevelopmental assessment using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III) were collected. Patients were divided into 4 groups: prematurity without ROP, ROP without treatment, ROP with laser treatment, and ROP with intravitreal anti-VEGF treatment. A generalized estimating equation was used for analyzing repeated measurements of Bayley-III at the corrected ages of 6, 12, and 24 months.A total of 2090 patients with a mean gestational age of 31.2 weeks were included. The Bayley-III composite scores of patients with ROP treated with anti-VEGF were comparable to those of patients with ROP without treatment (cognitive: P = .491; language: P = .201; motor: P = .151) and premature patients without ROP (cognitive: P = .985; language: P = .452; motor: P = .169) after adjusting for confounders. Patients with ROP treated with laser photocoagulation exhibited poorer cognitive composite scores than did those without treatment (P.001), premature patients without ROP (P.001), and those treated with anti-VEGF (P.001), but they had similar language and motor composite scores.Intravitreal anti-VEGF treatment for ROP was not associated with adverse neurodevelopment in premature infants. Further studies are needed to determine whether general anesthesia or sedation used in laser treatment for ROP has significant impacts on neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Backpacks are commonly worn by many people for multiple purposes. This study investigated the effects of habitual wearing of backpacks on lower limb kinematics and kinetics. Fourteen participants were recruited for analysis. All participants performed four randomly assigned scenarios, including running and walking at speeds of 3.5 and 1.5 m/s, respectively, with and without load carriage. The motion analysis system and force plate were used to investigate the lower limb kinematics and kinetics. A paired sample t-test was performed for statistical measurement with a significance level of α = .05. The results indicated that active force, breaking force, impact peak, loading rate, active peak, maximum braking, hip flexion, and hip range of motion were substantially higher under load carriage conditions than under walking condition, however, time to peak was lower. Conversely, during load carriage running, active force, braking impulse, time to peak, ankle plantarflexion, and ankle range of motion were all higher than those during running. Carrying a backpack weighing 10% of the body weight induced different foot strike patterns at both speeds; during load carriage walking, the hip tended to flex more; whereas, during load carriage running, the ankle tended to flex more. In conclusion, human body seems to adopt different gait strategies during load carriage walking and running. That is, the hip strategy is used during walking, while the ankle strategy is used during running.

To develop and validate the Visual Function Battery for Children with Special Needs (VFB-CSN).This was a scale development and validation study with (1) construct and item generation and (2) evaluations of interrater reliability, acceptability, and content, ecological, and convergent validities.Children with special needs were recruited for the reliability (n = 32) and validity (n = 95) investigations. The construct and items were generated based on literature review and an expert panel. We constructed eight categories, namely visual reflex, ocular muscle balance, visual acuity, oculomotor, visual field, contrast sensitivity, colour/form vision, and visual attention. Both functional assessment and standardized tests were adopted. The reliabilities were high for the whole VFB-CSN (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.90, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.80-0.90) and good for the oculomotor, contrast sensitivity, and colour/form vision (ICC = 0.80-0.86, 95% CI = 0.50-0.93). Correlations between the VFB-CSN and the Functional Vision Questionnaire were strong and acceptable for the contrast sensitivity, acuity, and colour/form vision (r = 0.79, r = 0.69, r = 0.69, r = 0.70 respectively). The correlation between the VFB-CSN and standardized visual acuity test was acceptable (r = -0.72).The VFB-CSN is a reliable and valid multifaceted battery for children with special needs. Acceptable psychometric properties were also found for the acuity and contrast sensitivity.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most important complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) and has become the second cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This study intends to investigate the molecular mechanism of increased mitochondrial fission in podocytes under the effect of high glucose (HG), and to preliminarily study the role of mitochondrial fission factor (MFF)-mediated mitochondrial fission in podocyte injury of DN. In vitro studies, we found that HG induced increased mitochondrial fission and podocyte damage. At the same time MFF mRNA and protein levels was increased, suggesting that MFF was transcriptional upregulated under HG conditions. Consistent with this, in vivo studies found that mitochondrial fission was also significantly increased in podocytes of diabetic nephropathy mice, and MFF expression was up-regulated. Therefore, our study proves that mitochondrial fission increases in podocytes under DM both in vitro and in vivo, and the up-regulation of MFF expression may be one of the reasons for the increase of mitochondrial fission. After inhibiting the expression of MFF, the survival rate of podocytes was significantly decreased under HG conditions, suggesting that MFF may play a protective role in podocyte injury in DN.

Numerous studies have reported that long-term musical training can affect brain functionality and induce structural alterations in the brain. Singing is a form of vocal musical expression with an unparalleled capacity for communicating emotion; however, there has been relatively little research on neuroplasticity at the network level in vocalists (i.e., noninstrumental musicians). Our objective in this study was to elucidate changes in the neural network architecture following long-term training in the musical arts. We employed a framework based on graph theory to depict the connectivity and efficiency of structural networks in the brain, based on diffusion-weighted images obtained from 35 vocalists, 27 pianists, and 33 nonmusicians. Our results revealed that musical training (both voice and piano) could enhance connectivity among emotion-related regions of the brain, such as the amygdala. We also discovered that voice training reshaped the architecture of experience-dependent networks, such as those involved in vocal motor control, sensory feedback, and language processing. It appears that vocal-related changes in areas such as the insula, paracentral lobule, supramarginal gyrus, and putamen are associated with functional segregation, multisensory integration, and enhanced network interconnectivity. These results suggest that long-term musical training can strengthen or prune white matter connectivity networks in an experience-dependent manner.

Although it remains controversial, premedication before transfusion is a common clinical practice to prevent transfusion-associated adverse reactions (TAARs) in Taiwan. Thus, we aimed to investigate whether premedication prevented outpatients from developing TAARs and whether an educational programme could improve the understanding of physicians related to the unnecessary use of premedication, and this could elicit changes in their prescribing activities without affecting the occurrence of TAARs.Clinical data from outpatients receiving transfusion therapy, including predisposing diseases, histories of transfusion and TAARs, premedication and the occurrence of TAARs in the period April 2017 to October 2018, were retrospectively obtained. The evidence-based transfusion programme implemented to educate physicians was started in January 2018.A total of 5018 blood units were transfused to 803 outpatients, with 2493 transfusion events reported in the study interval. The most frequently transfused component was leukocyte-reduced packed red cells (n = 4338), followed by leukocyte-reduced apheresis platelets (n = 540) and other blood components. The overall premedication rate significantly decreased from 92.4% to 76.7% after the educational programme (p 0.001). There was no remarkable change in the occurrence of TAARs per patient event between the periods before and after the educational programme (1.11% vs. 1.14%, p = 0.964). Besides, it was shown that the occurrence of TAARs was associated with the history of TAARs and inversely related to multiple transfusions, but not premedication.Decreased premedication was not associated with increased incidence of TAARs in outpatients; these findings provide important evidence to support the need to revise clinical practices in the era of leukocyte-reduced blood products.

Membrane dialysis is one of the membrane contactors applied to wastewater treatment. The dialysis rate of a traditional dialyzer module is restricted because the solutes transport through the membrane only by diffusion, in which the mass-transfer driving force across the membrane is the concentration gradient between the retentate and dialysate phases. A two-dimensional mathematical model of the concentric tubular dialysis-and-ultrafiltration module was developed theoretically in this study. The simulated results show that the dialysis rate improvement was significantly improved through implementing the ultrafiltration effect by introducing a trans-membrane pressure during the membrane dialysis process. The velocity profiles of the retentate and dialysate phases in the dialysis-and-ultrafiltration system were derived and expressed in terms of the stream function, which was solved numerically by the Crank–Nicolson method. A maximum dialysis rate improvement of up to twice that of the pure dialysis system (Vw=0) was obtained by employing a dialysis system with an ultrafiltration rate of Vw=2 mL/min and a constant membrane sieving coefficient of θ=1. The influences of the concentric tubular radius, ultrafiltration fluxes and membrane sieve factor on the outlet retentate concentration and mass transfer rate are also illustrated.

Using an atomistic tight-binding model, we study the characteristics of a Josephson junction formed by monolayers of MoS$_2$ sandwiched between Pb superconducting electrodes. We derive and apply Green's function-based formulation to compute the Josephson current in this system, as well as the local density of states in the junction. Our analysis of diagonal and off-diagonal components of the local density of states reveals the presence of triplet superconducting correlations in the MoS$_2$ monolayers and spin-polarized subgap (Andreev bound) states. Our formulation can be extended to other systems where atomistic details and large scales are needed to obtain accurate modeling of Josephson junction physics., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Background: Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a common and easily blinded uveitis entity, with choroid being the main involved site. Classification of VKH disease and its different stages is crucial because they differ in clinical manifestations and therapeutic interventions. Wide-field swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (WSS-OCTA) provides the advantages of non-invasiveness, large-field-of-view, high resolution, and ease of measuring and calculating choroid, offering the potential feasibility of simplified VKH classification assessment based on WSS-OCTA.Methods: 15 healthy controls (HC), 13 acute-phase and 17 convalescent-phase VKH patients were included, undertaken WSS-OCTA examination with a scanning field of 15 × 9 mm2. 20 WSS-OCTA parameters were then extracted from WSS-OCTA images. To classify HC and VKH patients in acute and convalescent phases, two 2-class VKH datasets (HC and VKH) and two 3-class VKH datasets (HC, acute-phase VKH, and convalescent-phase VKH) were established by the WSS-OCTA parameters alone or in combination with best-corrected visual acuity (logMAR BCVA) and intraocular pressure (IOP), respectively. A new feature selection and classification method that combines an equilibrium optimizer and a support vector machine (called SVM-EO) was adopted to select classification-sensitive parameters among the massive datasets and to achieve outstanding classification performance. The interpretability of the VKH classification models was demonstrated based on SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP).Results: Based on pure WSS-OCTA parameters, we achieved classification accuracies of 91.61% ± 12.17% and 86.69% ± 8.30% for 2- and 3-class VKH classification tasks. By combining the WSS-OCTA parameters and logMAR BCVA, we achieved better classification performance of 98.82% ± 2.63% and 96.16% ± 5.88%, respectively. Through SHAP analysis, we found that logMAR BCVA and vascular perfusion density (VPD) calculated from the whole field of view region in the choriocapillaris (whole FOV CC-VPD) were the most important features for VKH classification in our models.Conclusion: We achieved excellent VKH classification performance based on a non-invasive WSS-OCTA examination, which provides the possibility for future clinical VKH classification with high sensitivity and specificity.

In the area of a petrochemical industrial site, ten monitoring stations are established to determine the airborne pollutants that are emitted, which include criteria air pollutants and 54 species of ozone formation precursors of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The hourly pollutants are increased by human activities, such as traffic flow after 7:00 a.m., and ozone becomes more abundant as solar radiation increases in intensity. Monthly air pollutants are present in low concentrations during the rainy season from May to September and in high concentrations from October to April. Results show that VOC concentrations are low in the summer (average concentration 5.7–5.9 ppb) and more than double in the winter (11–12 ppb), with 52–63% alkanes, 18–24% aromatics, 11–22% alkenes and 4.7–7.1% alkynes. Ethane, toluene, propane, n-butane, ethylene and acetylene are the major VOCs, with an annual average concentration exceeding 0.50 ppb. In 2016–2020, the VOC concentration is decreased from 10.1 to 7.73 ppb, corresponding to the ozone formation potential (OFP) decrease from 84 to 61 μg-O3 m−3, with toluene, m,p-xylene, ethylene and propene being the most abundant species. The primary VOC sources are petrochemical industry sites, fuel combustion, vehicle exhaust emissions and evaporation, solvent application, industrial facilities and emission from farming vegetation.

Understanding the regulatory mechanisms underlying corneal epithelial cell (CEC) proliferation in vitro may provide the means to boost CEC production in cell therapy for ocular disorders. The transcription factor ΔNp63 plays a crucial role in the proliferation of CECs, but the underlying mechanisms is yet to be elucidated. TP63 and ΔNp63 are encoded by the TP63 gene via alternative promoters. We previously reported that both ΔNp63 and activating transcription factor (ATF3) are substantially expressed in cultured CECs, but the regulatory relationship between ΔNp63 and ATF3 is unknown. In the present study, we found that ΔNp63 increased ATF3 expression and ATF3 promoter activity in cultured CECs. The deletion of the p63 binding core site reduced ATF3 promoter activity. CECs overexpressing ATF3 exhibited significantly greater proliferation than control CECs. ATF3 knockdown suppressed the ΔNp63-induced increase in cell proliferation. Overexpression of ATF3 in CECs significantly elevated protein and mRNA levels of cyclin D. The protein levels of keratin 3/14, integrin β1, and involucrin did not differ between ATF3-overexpressing CECs, ATF3-downregulated CECs, and control cells. In conclusion, our results suggest that ΔNp63 increases CEC proliferation via the ΔNp63/ATF3/CDK pathway.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) accounts for nearly 10-15% of all lung cancer cases. Although many chemotherapy drugs, such as cisplatin and etoposide, were approved as primary therapy for SCLC patients, the prognosis is poor. In this study, we aimed to explore novel therapeutic strategy against SCLC.Two SCLC cell lines, LTEP-P and LTEP-P/DDP1.0, were treated with cisplatin, in the absence or presence of Nivolumab + Ipilimumab combination, and the cell viability was measured. Tumor size and mouse survival rate were examined upon different drug treatments. Protein levels of PD-1 and CTLA4 were detected in normal and SCLC cells by Western blot. Cellular cytotoxicity induced by T lymphocytes was measured by thymidine incorporation assay. Tumor infiltrated T cell populations from LTEP-P and LTEP/DDP1.0 tumor-bearing mice were analyzed by flow cytometry.LTEP-P cells, but not LTEP/DDP1.0 cells, exhibited decreased cell viability upon cisplatin, Nivolumab and Ipilimumab combinational treatment. T lymphocytes significantly inhibited the growth of LTEP-P cells in the presence of nivolumab and ipilimumab. The combinational therapy improved survival rate and inhibited tumor growth in LTEP-P tumor-bearing mice, but showed no effect on LTEP/DDP1.0 tumor-bearing mice. Nivolumab and Ipilimumab synergized with cisplatin in increasing CD8 + and CD4 + T cell population, while decreasing Treg population in LTEP-P tumor-bearing mice.The combinational therapy by cisplatin, Nivolumab and Ipilimumab could be an effective strategy against LTEP-P cells, accompanied with increased cytotoxic T cell populations, but has no significant effect against DDP-resistant lung adenocarcinoma cells.

In oxygenic photosynthesis, NADP+ acts as the final acceptor of the photosynthetic electron transport chain and receives electrons via the thylakoid membrane complex photosystem I (PSI) to synthesize NAPDH by the enzyme ferredoxin:NADP+ oxidoreductase. The NADP+/NADPH redox couple is essential for cellular metabolism and redox homeostasis. However, how the homeostasis of these two dinucleotides is integrated into chloroplast biogenesis remains largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate the important role of NADP+ supply for the biogenesis of PSI by examining the nad kinase 2 (nadk2) mutant in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), which demonstrates disrupted synthesis of NADP+ from NAD+ in chloroplasts. Although the nadk2 mutant is highly sensitive to light, the reaction center of photosystem II (PSII) is only mildly and likely only secondarily affected compared to the wild-type. Our studies revealed that the primary limitation of photosynthetic electron transport, even at low light intensities, occurs at PSI rather than at PSII in the nadk2 mutant. Remarkably, this primarily impairs the de novo synthesis of the two PSI core subunits PsaA and PsaB, leading to the deficiency of the PSI complex in the nadk2 mutant. This study reveals an unexpected molecular link between NADK activity and mRNA translation of psaA/B in chloroplasts that may mediate a feedback mechanism to adjust de novo biosynthesis of the PSI complex in response to a variable NADPH demand. This adjustment may be important to protect PSI from photoinhibition under conditions that favor acceptor side limitation.

OBJECTIVE: To explore susceptibility loci associated with uveitis in Behçet's disease (BD).METHODS: We conducted a 2-stage study, consisting of a genome-wide association study (GWAS) stage and a replication stage, in a Chinese population. The GWAS stage included 978 cases with BD-related uveitis and 4,388 controls, and the replication stage included 953 cases with BD-related uveitis and 2,129 controls. Luciferase reporter analysis and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay were performed to explore the functional role of susceptibility genetic variants near ZMIZ1.RESULTS: Three independent HLA alleles (HLA-B51 [3.75 × 10-190 ], HLA-A26 [1.50 × 10-18 ], and HLA-C0704 [3.44 × 10-16 ]) were identified as having a genome-wide association with BD-related uveitis. In the non-HLA region, in addition to confirming 7 previously reported loci, we identified 22 novel susceptibility variants located in 16 loci. Meta-analysis of the Chinese cohort consisting of 1,931 cases and 6,517 controls and a published Japanese cohort of 611 cases and 737 controls showed genome-wide significant associations with ZMIZ1, RPS6KA4, IL10RA, SIPA1-FIBP-FOSL1, and VAMP1. Functional experiments demonstrated that genetic variants of ZMIZ1 were associated with enhanced transcription activity and increased expression of ZMIZ1.CONCLUSION: This GWAS study identified a novel set of genetic variants that are associated with susceptibility to uveitis in BD. These findings enrich our understanding of the contribution of genetic factors to the disease.

Ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation has been reported to be involved in regulating the activity of oncoproteins and tumor suppressors. Dysfunction or dysregulation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system may induce tumorigenesis. Deubiquitinase ubiquitin-specific protease 2a (USP2a) has been reported to regulate cell growth or death and is involved in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including cancers. However, the role of USP2a in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) has not been investigated yet. The goal of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of USP2a expression in UTUC.A total of 110 UTUC cases were included in this study. USP2a expression level was evaluated through immunohistochemistry staining, and the correlation of USP2a expression level with both clinical and pathologic variables was analyzed.High USP2a expression level was observed in 48 (43.6%) cancer specimens. USP2a expression level was significantly correlated with tumor stage (P=0.001), grade (P=0.033), and tumor recurrence (P=0.008). High USP2a expression level was correlated with poor disease-free survival (P=0.005) and cancer-specific survival (P0.001). In addition, high USP2a expression level was an independent predictor of poor disease-free survival (hazard ratio=2.31; P=0.007) and cancer-specific survival (hazard ratio=5.49; P=0.009).This study indicated that USP2a protein expression level may be a potential biomarker for predicting UTUC patient survival. Further prospective studies are needed to investigate the role of USP2a in UTUC progression.

Purpose To compare the outcomes of using an internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap and the conventional ILM peel technique for small- or medium-sized full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) repair. Design Retrospective, interventional case series. Methods Eyes with an FTMH ≤ 400 µm that underwent vitrectomy with either a single-layer inverted ILM flap (flap group, 55 eyes) or an ILM peel (peel group, 62 eyes) were enrolled. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements were obtained preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Results Primary hole closure was achieved in 54 (98%) and 60 (97%) eyes in the flap and peel groups, respectively. The preoperative and postoperative 12-month BCVA were comparable between the groups but were significantly better in the flap than in the peel groups at 1 month (logMAR, mean ± SD, 0.83 ± 0.43 vs. 1.14 ± 0.50, P = 0.001), 3 months (0.58 ± 0.33 vs. 0.82 ± 0.43; P = 0.002), and 6 months (0.56 ± 0.32 vs. 0.72 ± 0.48; P = 0.028). In the flap group, foveal gliosis was less common than the peel group at 1 month (P = 0.030) and restored external limiting membrane and interdigitation zone was more common at 3 months (P = 0.046 and Conclusions Both the single-layer ILM flap and conventional ILM peel techniques closed FTMHs and improved vision. ILM flaps were associated with better visual outcomes up to 6 months postoperatively and should be considered in FTMHs ≤ 400 µm.

To compare the results of a voice handicap index (VHI) scale and acoustic parameters in patients who underwent microlaryngeal surgery followed by either short-duration (voice rest for7 days) or long-duration (≥7 days) voice rest.Systematic review and meta-analysis.The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched for articles published before March 1, 2021. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that measured the voice outcomes of patients after different durations and extents of postoperative voice restriction were included in the meta-analysis.Four RCTs comprising 112 patients were included in the quantitative meta-analysis. Compared with the long-duration voice rest group, the short-duration group exhibited comparable VHI scores (mean difference [MD], -7.01; 95% CI, -16.12 to 2.09; p = 0.13), maximum phonation time (MD, -2.58; 95% CI, -5.42 to 0.26; p = 0.07), and acoustic variables of jitter (MD, -1.25; 95% CI, -3.43 to 0.94; p = 0.26) and shimmer (MD, -0.79; 95% CI, -2.08 to 0.51; p = 0.24). Subgroup analysis for benign pathology and cold instruments studies demonstrated significantly better VHI scores (MD, -14.45; 95% CI, -26.19 to -2.72; p = 0.02 and MD, -15.98; 95% CI, -28.52 to -3.44; p = 0.01, respectively) in the short-duration group.The limited evidence does not demonstrate benefit in voice outcomes from long-duration voice rest and suggests potential unfavorable effects on compliance and quality of life, providing a rationale for short-duration voice rest after microlaryngeal surgery. To determine the long-term cognitive outcomes in children who underwent intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).Prospective cohort study.This single-center study enrolled 186 children between 3 and 6 years of age and included 101 children in the final analysis: premature without ROP (group 1), ROP not needing treatment (group 2), IVB monotherapy (group 3), IVB plus laser therapy (group 4), and laser monotherapy (group 5). The Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) was evaluated by the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence Test at baseline and then annually for 1-2 years and compared among groups.The age at cognitive evaluation was 4.5-4.9 years at baseline and 6.1-7.0 years at the last follow-up. The FSIQ was comparable among the groups at both time points (P = .08 and .50, respectively). Severe cognitive impairment (FSIQ70) was more common in group 4 at baseline (4%, 22%, 13%, 33%, and 0% in groups 1-5, respectively; P = .03) but did not differ among the groups at the last follow-up (6%, 0%, 4%, 22%, and 0%; P = .22). After adjusting for sex, Apgar score, neonatal adverse events, and days on mechanical ventilation, IVB was not associated with FSIQ either at baseline or at the last follow-up.At 4.5 to beyond 6 years of age, children who underwent IVB monotherapy had comparable cognitive outcomes compared to the other premature children without prior IVB. Children who underwent IVB plus laser showed higher severe cognitive impairment at 4.5 years of age.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of mood disorders in patients who experienced retinal detachment (RD) by using the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Methods: Participants with a diagnosis of RD were regarded as the study group, and an age- and sex-matched group without a diagnosis of RD served as the control group. The outcomes related to mood disorders after RD included: (1) psychiatric outpatient department visits; (2) behavioural therapy; (3) sleep or anxiety-related disorders; and (4) major depressive disorder (MDD). Results: A total of 4,129 participants diagnosed with RD and 16,516 non-RD individuals were enrolled in the study. There were no significant differences in the four mood disorder-related outcomes between the study and control groups. However, the patients with recurrent RD who received more than two treatments and female patients with RD who needed surgical treatment showed a higher probability of developing MDD than did the non-RD subjects (incidence rate: 0.96 vs. 0.36; adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 2.382, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.032–5.496, log-rank p = 0.0325; and aHR: 6.895, 95% CI: 1.659–28.656, log-rank p = 0.0060, respectively). Conclusion: Patients with recurrent RD and multiple surgeries and females with RD who needed surgical treatment were at greater risk for developing MDD.
