Exploring the snow depth on Mount Everest, one of the most inaccessible places on our planet, has long been a topic of interest. Previously reported snow depths have been inconsistent and have large uncertainties. Here, we report the ground-penetrating radar survey of snow depth along the north slope of Mount Everest in May 2022. Our radar measurements display a gradual increasing transition of snow depth along the north slope, and the mean depth estimates at the summit are 9.5±1.2 m. This updated snow depth on Mount Everest is much deeper than previously reported values (0.9–3.5 m).

On 22 March 2021, an approximately 50 Mm3 ice-rock avalanche occurred from 6500 m a.s.l. in the Sedongpu basin, southeastern Tibet. The avalanche transformed into a highly mobile mass flow which temporarily blocked the Yarlung Tsangpo river. The avalanche flow lasted ∼ 5 min and produced substantial geomorphological reworking. This event, and previous ones from the basin, occurred concurrently with, or shortly after, positive seasonal air temperature anomalies. The occurrence of future large mass flows from the basin cannot be ruled out, and their impacts must be carefully considered given implications for sustainable hydropower and associated socioeconomic development in the region.

Aphids are among the most destructive phytophagous pests of host plants, because of their rapid reproduction, parthenogenesis, extensive crop damage, and the transmission of many plant viruses. Since lady beetles are important predatory natural enemies of aphids, developing lady beetle attractants to increase their field abundance is vital for aphid control. Floral volatiles and other semiochemicals are reportedly attractive to lady beetles. In this research, a total of 58 floral volatiles were tested by Y-tube olfactometer assays, among which 29 were highly attractive to both Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Meanwhile, the results of wind tunnel trials showed that only isoamyl acetate, α-humulene, trans-3-hexen-1-ol, methyl salicylate, and β-pinene lure these two species. Thereafter, 15 semiochemicals from pests, natural enemies, and pest-infested crops were mixed with the selected floral volatiles, to determine optimum formulations for attracting lady beetles through wind tunnels and further field trials. Eventually, formulas (1) α-humulene: β-pinene: methyl salicylate: trans-3-hexen-1-ol = 1:3:3:10; (5) α-humulene: β-pinene: methyl salicylate:1-nonanal = 1:3:3:10; (8) α-humulene: β-pinene: methyl salicylate: indole = 1:3:3:10 (1, 5, and 8 are labels used for the various formulations in field trials) were successfully verified to be attractive to lady beetles in both pumpkin and wheat fields. These formulations will be of great significance in developing integrated pest management strategies for aphid control.

The aim of the study was to assess the association between meteorological parameters and ischemic stroke onset in cold seasons in Tianjin.Patients and Methods: Patients with acute ischemic stroke (946) were identified by standard sampling from one stroke unit in the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, China, from 10/1/2014 to 4/30/2019. Generalized linear Poisson regression models were used to explore the effect of meteorological parameters (air temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity) on daily ischemic stroke onset after adjusting for air pollutants, day of week, and public holiday.Results: The results showed that ischemic stroke onset was positively associated with the diurnal variation of temperature (β coefficient: 0.020, 95% CI [0.001, 0.038] p< 0.05). Significant positive correlation between ischemic stroke onset and barometric pressure (mean, minimum) was found (β coefficient: 0.010, 95% CI [0.001,0.019] p< 0.05; 0.010, 95% CI [0.001,0.019] p< 0.05). The subgroup analysis considering age and gender difference showed that the older and the female were more vulnerable to weather conditions.Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that there was a measurable effect of weather parameters on daily ischemic stroke onset in colder seasons, suggesting that meteorological variables may, at least in part, play as risk factors for ischemic stroke onset, especially for the aging and female population.Keywords: cold temperature, air pressure, ischemic stroke

Designs with bioactive motifs to influence cell behavior and with D-form amino acids to modulate scaffold stability may be critical for the development and optimization of self-assembling biomimetic hydrogel scaffolds for stem cell therapy.Materials and Methods: In this study, we linked naphthalene (Nap) covalently to a short D-form peptide (Nap-DFDFG) and the C domain of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1C) as a functional hydrogel-based scaffolds, and we hypothesized that this hydrogel could enhance the therapeutic efficiency of human placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hP-MSCs) in a murine acute kidney injury (AKI) model.Results: The self-assembling peptide was constrained into a classical β-sheet structure and showed hydrogel properties. Our results revealed that this hydrogel exhibited increased affinity for IGF-1 receptor. Furthermore, cotransplantation of the β-IGF-1C hydrogel and hP-MSCs contributed to endogenous regeneration post-injury and boosted angiogenesis in a murine AKI model, leading to recovery of renal function.Conclusion: This hydrogel could provide a favorable niche for hP-MSCs and thereby rescue renal function in an AKI model by promoting cell survival and angiogenesis. The shoddy commodities in the online has become a serious challenge for Chinese E-business. This paper employs the game theory and develops a dynamic model to analysis the commodity quality and price in e-business market. According to the results, it implies that shoddy will reduce the market efficiency. Meanwhile, even though the market does not contain shoddy commodities, the efficiency will also lower. In order to counterfeit the bad commodities to the good commodities, the sellers should pay the extra cost, it indicates that the government should strengthen the supervision and the consumers should collect more information about the commodities.
