The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. We introduce the New-ANGELS program, an XMM-Newton survey of $\sim7.2\rm~deg^2$ area around M 31, which aims to study the X-ray populations in M 31 disk and the X-ray emitting hot gas in the inner halo of M 31 up to 30 kpc. In this first paper, we report the catalogue of 4506 detected X-ray sources, and attempt to cross-identify or roughly classify them. We identify 352 single stars in the foreground, 35 globular clusters and 27 supernova remnants associated with M 31, as well as 62 AGNs, 59 galaxies, and 1 galaxy clusters in the background. We uniquely classify 236 foreground stars and 17 supersoft sources based on their X-ray colors. X-ray binaries (83 LMXBs, 1 HMXBs) are classified based on their X-ray colors and X-ray variabilities. The remaining X-ray sources either have too low S/N to calculate their X-ray colors or do not have a unique classification, so are regarded as unclassified. The X-ray source catalogue is published online. The PASSAGES ($Planck$ All-Sky Survey to Analyze Gravitationally-lensed Extreme Starbursts) collaboration has recently defined a sample of 30 gravitationally-lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). These rare, submillimeter-selected objects enable high-resolution views of the most extreme sites of star formation in galaxies at Cosmic Noon. Here, we present the first major compilation of strong lensing analyses using LENSTOOL for PASSAGES, including 15 objects spanning $z=1.1-3.3$, using complementary information from $0.6^{\prime\prime}$-resolution 1 mm Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and $0.4^{\prime\prime}$ 5 cm Jansky Very Large Array continuum imaging, in tandem with 1.6$\mu$m $Hubble$ and optical imaging with Gemini-S. Magnifications range from $\mu = 2 - 28$ (median $\mu=7$), yielding intrinsic infrared luminosities of $L_{\rm IR} = 0.2 - 5.9 \times 10^{13}~L_\odot$ (median ${1.4}\times 10^{13}~L_\odot$) and inferred star formation rates of $170-6300~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ (median $1500~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$). These results suggest that the PASSAGES objects comprise some of the most extreme known starbursts, rivaling the luminosities of even the brightest unlensed objects, further amplified by lensing. The intrinsic sizes of far-infrared continuum regions are large ($R_{\rm e} = {1.7 - 4.3}$ kpc; median $3.0$ kpc) but consistent with $L_{\rm IR}-R_{\rm e}$ scaling relations for $z>1$ DSFGs, suggesting a widespread spatial distribution of star formation. With modestly-high angular resolution, we explore if these objects might be maximal starbursts. Instead of approaching Eddington-limited surface densities, above which radiation pressure will disrupt further star formation, they are safely sub-Eddington -- at least on global, galaxy-integrated scales., Comment: 48 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables. In the disks of spiral galaxies, diffuse soft X-ray emission is known to be strongly correlated with star-forming regions. However, this emission is not simply from a thermal-equilibrium plasma and its origin remains greatly unclear. In this work, we present an X-ray spectroscopic analysis of the emission from the northern hot spot; a region with enhanced star-formation off the nucleus of M51. Based on the high spectral resolution data from XMM-Newton/RGS observations, we unambiguously detect a high $G$ ratio ($3.2^{+6.9}_{-1.5}$) of the OVII He$\alpha$ triplet. This high $G$ ratio is also spatially confirmed by oxygen emission-line maps from the same data. A physical model consisting of a thermal plasma and its charge exchange (CX) with neutral cool gas gives a good explanation for the $G$ ratio and the entire RGS spectra. This model also gives a satisfactory characterization of the complementary Chandra/ACIS-S data, which enables a direct imaging of the diffuse emission, tracing the hot plasma across the galaxy. The hot plasma has a similar characteristic temperature of ~0.34 keV and an approximately solar metallicity. The CX contributes ~50% to the diffuse emission in the 0.4-1.8 keV band, suggesting an effective hot/cool gas interface area about five times the geometric area of the M51 disk. Therefore, the CX appears to play a major role in the soft X-ray production and may be used as a powerful tool to probe the interface astrophysics, important for studying galactic ecosystems., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, published in ApJ

Nuclear regions of galaxies apparently play a disproportionately large role in regulating their formation and evolution. How this regulation works, however, remains very uncertain. Here we review a few recent X-ray studies of our Galactic center and the inner bulge region of our major neighboring galaxy, M31, and focusing on addressing such questions as: Why are the majority of supermassive black holes (e.g., Sgr A*) so faint? What regulates the Galactic nuclear environment? Furthermore, what impact does a recent active galactic nucleus have on the ionization state of surrounding gas? These studies have provided new insight into how various relevant high-energy phenomena and processes interplay with extreme galactic nuclear environments and affect global galactic ecosystems.

We study the vertical distribution of the highly inclined galaxies from the Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies - an EVLA Survey (CHANG-ES). We explore the feasibility of photometrically deriving the HI disk scale-heights from the moment-0 images of the relatively edge-on galaxies with inclination >80 deg, by quantifying the systematic broadening effects and thus deriving correction equations for direct measurements. The corrected HI disk scale-heights of the relatively edge-on galaxies from the CHANG-ES sample show trends consistent with the quasi-equilibrium model of the vertical structure of gas disks. A recent article "An X-ray chimney extending hundreds of parsecs above and below the Galactic Centre" (2019, Nature, 567, 34) reported the detection of chimney-like X-ray-emitting features above and below the Galactic Center from XMM-Newton observations. We note here that these features were already reported by our Suzaku papers: Nakashima et al. (2013, ApJ, 773, 20, arXiv:1310.4236) for the southern feature and Nakashima et al. (2019, ApJ, in press, arXiv:1903.02571) for the northern feature. In particular, Nakashima et al. (2013) show that the ionization state of the southern feature is not in collisional ionization equilibrium and is most likely in a recombining or over-ionized state, which suggests its origin in the Galactic Center about 0.1 Myr ago., 1 page

Galaxies are surrounded by extended atmospheres, which are often called the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and are the least understood part of galactic ecosystems. The CGM serves as a reservoir of both diffuse, metal-poor gas accreted from the intergalactic medium, and metal-rich gas that is either ejected from galaxies by energetic feedback or stripped from infalling satellites. As such, the CGM is empirically multi-phased and complex in dynamics. Significant progress has been made in the past decade or so in observing the cosmic-ray/B-field, as well as various phases of the CGM. But basic questions remain to be answered. First, what are the energy, mass, and metal contents of the CGM? More specifically, how are they spatially distributed and partitioned in the different components? Moreover, how are they linked to properties of host galaxies and their global clustering and intergalactic medium environments? Lastly, what are the origin, state, and life-cycle of the CGM? This question explores the dynamics of the CGM. Here we illustrate how these questions may be addressed with multi-wavelength observations of the CGM., Astro2020 Science White Paper

Galaxies evolve under the influence of gas flows between their interstellar medium and their surrounding gaseous halos known as the circumgalactic medium (CGM). The CGM is a major reservoir of galactic baryons and metals, and plays a key role in the long cycles of accretion, feedback, and recycling of gas that drive star formation. In order to fully understand the physical processes at work within galaxies, it is therefore essential to have a firm understanding of the composition, structure, kinematics, thermodynamics, and evolution of the CGM. In this white paper we outline connections between the CGM and galactic star formation histories, internal kinematics, chemical evolution, quenching, satellite evolution, dark matter halo occupation, and the reionization of the larger-scale intergalactic medium in light of the advances that will be made on these topics in the 2020s. We argue that, in the next decade, fundamental progress on all of these major issues depends critically on improved empirical characterization and theoretical understanding of the CGM. In particular, we discuss how future advances in spatially-resolved CGM observations at high spectral resolution, broader characterization of the CGM across galaxy mass and redshift, and expected breakthroughs in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations will help resolve these major problems in galaxy evolution., Astro2020 Decadal Science White Paper

Because of strong and spatially highly variable interstellar extinction and extreme source crowding, the faint (K ≥ 15) stellar population in the Milky Way's nuclear star cluster is still poorly studied. RR Lyrae stars provide us with a tool to estimate the mass of the oldest, relative dim stellar population. Recently, we analysed HST/WFC3/IR observations of the central 2.3 × 2.3 arcmin2 of the Milky Way and found 21 variable stars with periods between 0.2 and 1 d. Here, we present a further comprehensive analysis of these stars. The period- luminosity relationship of RR Lyrae is used to derive their extinctions and distances. Using multiple approaches, we classify our sample as 4 RRc stars, 4 RRab stars, 3 RRab candidates and 10 binaries. Especially, the four RRab stars show sawtooth light curves and fall exactly on to the Oosterhoff I division in the Bailey diagram. Compared to the RRab stars reported by Minniti et al., our new RRab stars have higher extinction (AK > 1.8) and should be closer to the Galactic Centre. The extinction and distance of one RRab stars match those for the Milky Way's nuclear star cluster given in previous works. We perform simulations and find that after correcting for incompleteness, there could be not more than 40 RRab stars within the Milky Way's nuclear star cluster and in our field of view. Through comparing with the known globular clusters of the Milky Way, we estimate that if there exists an old, metal-poor (-1.5 < [Fe/H] < -1) stellar population in the Milky Way nuclear star cluster on a scale of 5 × 5 pc, then it contributes at most 4.7 × 105 M⊙, i.e. ~18 per cent of the stellar mass.

We used 4-yr baseline Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 IR observations of the Galactic Centre in the F153M band (1.53 μm) to identify variable stars in the central ~2.3 arcmin × 2.3 arcmin field.We classified 3845 long-term (periods from months to years) and 76 short-term (periods of a few days or less) variables among a total sample of 33 070 stars. For 36 of the latter ones, we also derived their periods (< 3 d). Our catalogue not only confirms bright long period variables and massive eclipsing binaries identified in previous works but also contains many newly recognized dim variable stars. For example, we found δ Scuti and RR Lyrae stars towards the Galactic Centre for the first time, as well as one BL Her star (period < 1.3 d). We cross-correlated our catalogue with previous spectroscopic studies and found that 319 variables have well-defined stellar types, such as Wolf-Rayet, OB main sequence, supergiants and asymptotic giant branch stars. We used colours and magnitudes to infer the probable variable types for those stars without accurately measured periods or spectroscopic information. We conclude that the majority of unclassified variables could potentially be eclipsing/ellipsoidal binaries and Type II Cepheids. Our source catalogue will be valuable for future studies aimed at constraining the distance, star formation history and massive binary fraction of the Milky Way nuclear star cluster.

The 3rd Suzaku international Conference "Energetic Cosmos : from Suzaku to ASTRO-H" (June 29-July 2, 2009. Grand Park Otaru Hotel), Otaru, Hokkaido Japan, Spectroscopic study of Oxygen emission/absorption lines is a new tool to investigate the nature of the soft X-ray background. Base on the Suzaku observations of 14 fields, two components of the Oxygen line emission are discovered. One component emits within approximately 300 pc of our neighborhood and most plausible origin is the solar wind charge exchange with local interstellar materials. The other shows an apparent temperature of approximately 0.2 keV with a field-to-field fluctuation of +/- 10 %, while the intensity varies about a factor of 4. By the combination analysis of the emission and the absorption by Oxygens, the size of the hot plasma is an order of kpc. We explore the assembly history of the M31 bulge within a projected major-axis radius of 180" (~680 pc) by studying its stellar populations in Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 and ACS observations. Colors formed by comparing near-ultraviolet vs. optical bands are found to become bluer with increasing major-axis radius, which is opposite to that predicted if the sole sources of near-ultraviolet light were old extreme horizontal branch stars with a negative radial gradient in metallicity. Spectral energy distribution fits require a metal-rich intermediate-age stellar population (300 Myr to 1 Gyr old, ~solar metallicity) in addition to the dominant old population. The radial gradients in age and metallicity of the old stellar population are consistent with those in previous works. For the intermediate-age population, we find an increase in age with radius and a mass fraction that increases up to 2% at 680 pc away from the center. We exclude contamination from the M31 disk and/or halo as the main origin for this population. Our results thus suggest that intermediate-age stars exist beyond the central 5" (19 pc) of M31 and contribute ~1% of the total stellar mass in the bulge. International audience; Over the last decade, X-ray observations of Sgr A* have revealed a black hole in a deep sleep, punctuated roughly once per day by brief ares. The extreme X-ray faintness of this supermassive black hole has been a long-standing puzzle in black hole accretion. To study the accretion processes in the Galactic Center, Chandra (in concert with numerous ground- and space-based observatories) undertook a 3 Ms campaign on Sgr A* in 2012. With its excellent observing cadence, sensitivity, and spectral resolution, this Chandra X-ray Visionary Project (XVP) provides an unprecedented opportunity to study the behavior of our closest supermassive black hole. We present a progress report from our ongoing study of X-ray flares, including one of the brightest flares ever seen from Sgr A*. Focusing on the statistics of the flares, the quiescent emission, and the relationship between the X-ray and the infrared, we discuss the physical implications of X-ray variability in the Galactic Center.

The Local Group compact elliptical galaxy M32 hosts one of the nearest candidate super-massive black holes (SMBHs), which has a previously suggested X-ray counterpart. Based on sensitive observations taken with the {\it Karl G. Jansky} Very Large Array (VLA), we detect for the first time a compact radio source coincident with the nucleus of M32, which exhibits an integrated flux density of $\sim$$47.3\pm6.1$ $\mu$Jy at 6.6 GHz. We discuss several possibilities for the nature of this source, favoring an origin of the long-sought radio emission from the central SMBH, for which we also revisit the X-ray properties based on recently acquired {\sl Chandra} and {\sl XMM-Newton} data. We present a structural study of the hot ISM in the Galactic halo along the sight line toward the bright active galactic nucleus Mkn 421. The OVII and OVIII absorption lines were measured with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph aboard Chandra toward Mkn 421, and the OVII and OVIII emission lines were observed in the adjacent fields of the sight line with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer aboard Suzaku. We jointly analyzed the absorption and the emission spectra assuming exponential distributions of the gas temperature and density from the Galactic plane, and constrained the temperature and density at the plane to be $(3.2^{+0.6}_{-0.7})\times 10^6\,\mathrm{K}$ and $(1.2^{+0.5}_{-0.4})\times 10^{-3}\,\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$, with the scale heights of $1.6^{+1.7}_{-0.7}\,\mathrm{kpc}$ and $>2.8\,\mathrm{kpc}$ respectively. The results are consistent with those obtained in the LMC X-3 direction and the PKS 2155-304 direction, describing a thick disk-like hot gas with its height of a few kpc from the Galactic plane., 27 pages, 15 figures

Outside of the known star clusters in the Galactic Center, a large number of evolved massive stars have been detected; but their origins remain uncertain. We present a spectroscopic study of eight such stars, based on new Gemini GNIRS and NIFS near-infrared observations. This work has led to the discovery of a new O If+ star. We compare the reddening-corrected J-K vs K diagram for our stars with the massive ones in the Arches cluster and use stellar evolutionary tracks to constrain their ages and masses. The radial velocities of both the stars and their nearby H II regions are also reported. All of the stars are blueshifted relative to the Arches cluster by > 50 km/s. We find that our source P35 has a velocity consistent with that of the surrounding molecular gas. The velocity gradient of nearby ionized gas along the Gemini GNIRS long slit, relative to P35 and the adjacent -30-0 km/s molecular cloud, can best be explained by a pressure-driven flow model. Thus, P35 most likely formed in situ. Three more of our stars have radial velocities different from their adjacent molecular gas, indicating that they are interlopers. The four stars closest to the Arches cluster have similar spectra, ages and masses to known cluster members, suggesting that they were likely ejected from the cluster via three-body interactions. Therefore, we find that the relatively isolated stars partly formed in situ and partly were ejected from the known star clusters in the Galactic Center., Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 40 pages, 11 figures

The hot interstellar medium is an important part of the Galactic ecosystem and can be effectively characterized through X-ray absorption line spectroscopy. However, in a study of the hot medium using the accreting neutron star X-ray binary, Cyg X-2, as a background light source, a mystery came about when the putatively strong OVII Kalpha line was not detected in Chandra grating observations, while other normally weaker lines such as OVII Kbeta as well as OVI and OVIII Kalpha are clearly present (Yao et al. 2009). We have investigated the grating spectra of Cyg X-2 from 10 XMM-Newton observations, in search of the missing line. We detect it consistently in nine of these observations, but the line is absent in the remaining one observation or is inconsistent with the detection in others at a 4sigma confidence level. This absence of the line resembles that seen in the Chandra observations. Similarly, the OVI Kalpha line is found to disappear occasionally, but not in concert with the variation of the OVII Kalpha line. All these variations are most likely due to the presence of changing OVII and OVI Kalpha emission lines of Cyg X-2, which are blurred together with the absorption ones in the X-ray spectra. A re-examination of the Chandra grating data indeed shows evidence for a narrow emission line slightly off the OVI Kalpha absorption line. We further show that narrow NV emission lines with varying centroids and fluxes are present in far-UV spectra from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. These results provide new constraints on the accretion around the neutron star and on the X-ray-heating of the stellar companion. The two papers referred to in the title, claiming the detection of a large-scale massive hot gaseous halo around the Galaxy, have generated a lot of confusion and unwarranted excitement (including public news coverage). However, the papers are seriously flawed in many aspects, including problematic analysis and assumptions, as well as mis-reading and mis-interpreting earlier studies, which are inconsistent with the claim. We present a spatial analysis of the soft X-ray and H{\alpha} emissions from the outflow of the starburst galaxy M82. We find that the two emissions are tightly correlated on various scales. The O VII triplet of M82, as resolved by X-ray grating observations of XMM-Newton, is dominated by the forbidden line, inconsistent with the thermal prediction. The O VII triplet also shows some spatial variations. What are the origins of the soft X-ray line emission from non-AGN galaxies? XMM-Newton RGS spectra of nearby non-AGN galaxies (including starforming ones: M82, NGC 253, M51, M83, M61, NGC 4631, M94, NGC 2903, and the Antennae galaxies, as well as the inner bulge of M31) have been analyzed. In particular, the K{\alpha} triplet of O VII shows that the resonance line is typically weaker than the forbidden and/or inter-combination lines. This suggests that a substantial fraction of the emission may not arise directly from optically thin thermal plasma, as commonly assumed, and may instead originate at its interface with neutral gas via charge exchange. This latter origin naturally explains the observed spatial correlation of the emission with various tracers of cool gas in some of the galaxies. However, alternative scenarios, such as the resonance scattering by the plasma and the relic photo-ionization by AGNs in the recent past, cannot be ruled out, at least in some cases, and are being examined. Properties of hot gas outflows from galaxies are generally measured from associated X-ray line emission assuming that it represents atomic transitions in thermally excited hot gas. X-ray line emission, however, can also arise from the charge exchange between highly ionised ions and neutral species. The K\alpha\ triplet of He-like ions can be used as a powerful diagnostic, because the charge exchange X-ray emission (CXE) favours the inter-combination and forbidden lines, while the thermal emission favours the resonance line. We analyse the OVII triplet of a sample of nine nearby star-forming galaxies observed by the XMM-Newton reflection grating spectrometers. For most galaxies, the forbidden lines are comparable to or stronger than the resonance lines, which is in contrast to the thermal prediction. For NGC 253, M51, M83, M61, NGC 4631, and the Antennae galaxy, the observed line ratios are consistent with the ratio of the CXE; for M94 and NGC 2903, the observed ratios indicate multiple origins; for M82, different regions show different line ratios, also indicating multiple origins. We discuss other possible mechanisms that can produce a relatively strong forbidden line, such as a collisional non-equilibrium-ionization recombining/ionizing plasma, which are not favoured. We present a detailed spectroscopic study of the hot gas toward the Galactic bulge along the 4U 1820-303 sight line by a combination analysis of emission and absorption spectra. In addition to the absorption lines of OVII Kalpha, OVII Kbeta, OVIII Kalpha and NeIX Kalpha by Chandra LTGS as shown by previous works, Suzaku detected clearly the emission lines of OVII, OVIII, NeIX and NeX from the vicinity. We used simplified plasma models with constant temperature and density. Evaluation of the background and foreground emission was performed carefully, including stellar X-ray contribution based on the recent X-ray observational results and stellar distribution simulator. If we assume that one plasma component exists in front of 4U1820-303 and the other one at the back, the obtained temperatures are T= 1.7 +/- 0.2 MK for the front-side plasma and T=3.9(+0.4-0.3) MK for the backside. This scheme is consistent with a hot and thick ISM disk as suggested by the extragalactic source observations and an X-ray bulge around the Galactic center., 14 pages, 15 figures, accepted to be published in PASJ (Replace figure files to fix latex problem)

The galactic neighborhood, extending from the Milky Way to redshifts of about 0.1, is our unique local laboratory for detailed study of galaxies and their interplay with the environment. Such study provides a foundation of knowledge for interpreting observations of more distant galaxies and their environment. The Astro 2010 Science Frontier Galactic Neighborhood Panel identified four key scientific questions: 1) What are the flows of matter and energy in the circumgalactic medium? 2) What controls the mass-energy-chemical cycles within galaxies? 3) What is the fossil record of galaxy assembly from first stars to present? 4) What are the connections between dark and luminous matter? These questions, essential to the understanding of galaxies as interconnected complexes, can be addressed most effectively and/or uniquely in the galactic neighborhood. The panel also highlighted the discovery potential of time-domain astronomy and astrometry with powerful new techniques and facilities to greatly advance our understanding of the precise connections among stars, galaxies, and newly discovered transient events. Type Ia supernovae (Ia SNe) provide a rich source of iron for hot gas in galactic stellar spheroids. However, the expected super-solar iron abundance of the hot gas is not observed. Instead, X-ray observations often show decreasing iron abundance toward galactic central regions, where the Ia SN enrichment is expected to be the highest. We examine the cause of this missing iron problem by studying the enrichment process and its effect on X-ray abundance measurements of the hot gas. The evolution of Ia SN iron ejecta is simulated in the context of galaxy-wide hot gas outflows, in both supersonic and subsonic cases, as may be expected for hot gas in galactic bulges or elliptical galaxies of intermediate masses. SN reverse-shock heated iron ejecta is typically found to have a very high temperature and low density, hence producing little X-ray emission. Such hot ejecta, driven by its large buoyancy, can quickly reach a substantially higher outward velocity than the ambient medium, which is dominated by mass loss from evolved stars. The ejecta is gradually and dynamically mixed with the medium at large galactic radii. The ejecta is also slowly diluted and cooled by {\sl insitu} mass injection from evolved stars. These processes together naturally result in the observed positive gradient in the average radial iron abundance distribution of the hot gas, even if mass-weighted. This trend is in addition to the X-ray measurement bias that tends to underestimate the iron abundance for the hot gas with a temperature distribution., 18 pages, 9 figures, MNRAS in press

Recently X-ray observations have shown the common presence of compact galactic coronae around intermediate-mass spheroid galaxies embedded in the intracluster/intragroup medium (ICM). We conduct 2-D hydrodynamic simulations to study the quasi-steady-state properties of such coronae as the natural products of the ongoing distributed stellar feedback semi-confined by the thermal and ram pressures of the ICM. We find that the temperature of a simulated corona depends primarily on the specific energy of the feedback, consistent with the lack of the correlation between the observed hot gas temperature and K-band luminosity of galaxies. The simulated coronae typically represent subsonic outflows, chiefly because of the semi-confinement. As a result, the hot gas density increases with the ICM thermal pressure. The ram pressure, on the other hand, chiefly affects the size and lopsidedness of the coronae. The density increase could lead to the compression of cool gas clouds, if present, and hence the formation of stars. The increase also enhances radiative cooling of the hot gas, which may fuel central supermassive black holes, explaining the higher frequency of active galactic nuclei observed in clusters than in the field. The radiation enhancement is consistent with a substantially higher surface brightness of the X-ray emission detected from coronae in cluster environment. The total X-ray luminosity of a corona, however, depends on the relative importance of the surrounding thermal and ram pressures. These environment dependences should at least partly explain the large dispersion in the observed diffuse X-ray luminosities of spheroids with similar stellar properties. Furthermore, we show that an outflow powered by the distributed feedback can naturally produce a positive radial gradient in the hot gas entropy, mimicking a cooling flow., Comment: accepted by MNRAS, comments are welcome

We present a detailed spectroscopic study of the hot gas in the Galactic halo toward the direction of a blazer PKS 2155-304 (z=0.117). The OVII and OVIII absorption lines are measured with the Low and High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrographs aboard Chandra, and the OVII, OVIII, and NeIX emission lines produced in the adjacent field of the PKS 2155-304 direction are observed with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer aboard Suzaku. Assuming vertically exponential distributions of the gas temperature and the density, we perform a combined analysis of the absorption and emission data. The gas temperature and density at the Galactic plane are determined to be 2.5(+0.6,-0.3) MK and 1.4(+0.5,-0.4) x 10^{-3} cm^{-3} and the scale heights of the gas temperature and density are 5.6(+7.4,-4.2) kpc and 2.3(+0.9,-0.8) kpc, respectively. Many hydrodynamic processes can be studied in a way that is scalable over a vastly relevant physical parameter space. We systematically examine this scalability, which has so far only briefly discussed in astrophysical literature. We show how the scalability is limited by various constraints imposed by physical processes and initial conditions. Using supernova remnants in different environments and evolutionary phases as application examples, we demonstrate the use of the scaling as a powerful tool to explore the interdependence among relevant parameters, based on a minimum set of simulations. In particular, we devise a scaling scheme that can be used to adaptively generate numerous seed remnants and plant them into 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the supernova-dominated interstellar medium., 12 pages, 1 figure, submitted to MNRAS; comments are welcome

The Galactic center (GC) provides a unique laboratory for a detailed examination of the interplay between massive star formation and the nuclear environment of our Galaxy. Here, we present an 100 ks Chandra ACIS observation of the Arches and Quintuplet star clusters. We also report on a complementary mapping of the dense molecular gas near the Arches cluster made with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. The number-flux relation of point-like X-ray sources indicates an over-population of relatively bright X-ray sources, which are apparently associated with the clusters. The sources in the core of the Arches and Quintuplet clusters are most likely extreme colliding wind massive star binaries. The diffuse X-ray emission from the core of the Arches cluster has a spectrum showing a 6.7-keV emission line and a surface intensity profile declining steeply with radius, indicating an origin in a cluster wind. In the outer regions near the Arches cluster, the overall diffuse X-ray enhancement demonstrates a bow shock morphology and is prominent in the Fe Kalpha 6.4-keV line emission. Much of this enhancement may result from an ongoing collision between the cluster and the adjacent molecular cloud. The older and less compact Quintuplet cluster contains much weaker X-ray sources and diffuse emission, probably originating from low-mass stellar objects as well as a cluster wind. However, the overall population of these objects, constrained by the observed total diffuse X-ray luminosities, is substantially smaller than expected for both clusters. This deficiency of low-mass objects may be a manifestation of the unique star formation environment of the Galactic center., 27 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present an XMM-Newton observation of the massive edge-on Sb galaxy NGC 2613. We discover that this galaxy contains a deeply embedded active nucleus with a 0.3-10 keV luminosity of 3.3x10^40 erg/s and a line-of-sight absorption column of 1.2x10^23 cm^-2. Within the 25 mag/arcsec^2 optical B-band isophote of the galaxy, we detect an additional 4 sources with an accumulated luminosity of 4.3x10^39 erg/s. The bulk of the unresolved X-ray emission spatially follows the near-infrared (NIR) K-band surface brightness distribution; the luminosity ratio L_X/L_K ~ 8x10^-4 is consistent with that inferred from galactic discrete sources. This X-ray-NIR association and the compatibility of the X-ray spectral fit with the expected spectrum of a population of discrete sources suggest that low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are the most likely emitters of the unresolved emission in the disk region. The remaining unresolved emission is primarily due to extraplanar hot gas. The luminosity of this gas is at least a factor of 10 less than that predicted by recent simulations of intergalactic gas accretion by such a massive galaxy with a circular rotation speed V_c ~ 304 km/s^2 (Toft et al. 2002). Instead, we find that the extraplanar hot gas most likely represents discrete extensions away from the disk, including two ``bubble-like'' features on either side of the nucleus. These extensions appear to correlate with radio continuum emission and, energetically, can be easily explained by outflows from the galactic disk., Comment: 17 pages, accepted by MNRAS

We report the detection of highly-ionized gas at z~0 seen in resonant UV and X-ray absorption lines toward the z=0.03 blazar Mkn 421. A total of 13 X-ray and 3 UV lines were measured (or upper limits derived), including three lines in the OVII K-series and K\alpha transitions from neon, carbon, and nitrogen. I review results from {\sl Chandra} observations of nearby normal edge-on galaxies (Sd to Sa types). These galaxies have a broad range of star formation rate, but none of them is dominated by a nuclear starburst. The galaxies are all in directions of low Galactic foreground absorption. Extra-Planar diffuse soft X-ray emission is detected unambiguously from all the galaxies, except for N4244 (Sd), which is low in both the stellar mass and the star formation rate. The thermal nature of the X-ray-emitting gas is well established, although its chemical and ionization states remain largely uncertain. The X-ray luminosity of the gas is proportional to the star formation rate and to the stellar mass of the galaxies. But the luminosity accounts for at most a few percent of the expected supernova mechanical energy input. Therefore, there is a ``missing'' energy problem for spiral galaxies. Much of the energy in late-type spirals may be converted and radiated in lower energy bands. But early-type ones most likely have outflows, which are powered primarily by Type Ia supernovae in galactic bulges. These galactic outflows may strongly affect both the dynamics and cooling of the intergalactic gas accretion, hence the evolution of the galaxies., Comment: 8 pages. To appear in Extraplanar Gas, ed. A comparison of the XMM-Newton and Chandra Galactic Centre (GC) Surveys has revealed two faint X-ray transients with contrasting properties. The X-ray spectrum of XMM J174544-2913.0 shows a strong iron line with an equivalent width of ~2 keV, whereas that of XMM J174457-2850.3 is characterised by a very hard continuum with photon index ~1.0. The X-ray flux of both sources varied by more than 2 orders of magnitude over a period of months with a peak X-ray luminosity of 5 x 10^34 erg/s. PKS 1413+135 (z=0.24671) is one of very few radio-loud AGN with an apparent spiral host galaxy. Previous authors have attributed its nearly exponential infrared cutoff to heavy absorption but have been unable to place tight limits on the absorber or its location in the optical galaxy. In addition, doubts remain about the relationship of the AGN to the optical galaxy given the observed lack of re-emitted radiation. We present new HST, ASCA and VLBA observations which throw significant new light on these issues. The HST observations reveal an extrremely red color (V-H = 6.9 mag) for the active nucleus of PKS 1413+135, requiring both a spectral turnover at a few microns due to synchrotron aging and a GMC-sized absorber. We derive an intrinsic column N_H = 4.6^{+2.1}_{-1.6} times 10^{22}cm^{-2} and covering fraction f = 0.12^{+0.07}_{-0.05}. As the GMC is likely in the disk of the optical galaxy, our sightline is rather unlikely (P ~ 2 times 10^{-4}). The properties of the GMC typical of GMCs in our own galaxy. The HI absorber appears centered 25 milliarcseconds away from the nucleus, while the X-ray and nearly all of the molecular absorbers must cover the nucleus, implying a complicated geometry and cloud structure, with a molecular core along our line of sight to the nucleus. Interestingly, the HST/NICMOS data require the AGN to be decentered relative to the optical galaxy by 13 +/- 4 milliarcseconds. This could be interpreted as suggestive of an AGN location far in the background compared to the optical galaxy, but it can also be explained by obscuration and/or nuclear structure, which is more consistent with the observed lack of multiple images., 27 pages, 8 figures; accepted to AJ

We present a Chandra/ACIS-I observation of GRO J1744-28. We detected a source at a position of R.A = 17h 44m 33.09s and Dec. = -28degr 44' 27.0'' (J2000.0; with a 1sigma error of ~0.8 arcseconds), consistent with both ROSAT and interplanetary network localizations of GRO J1744-28 when it was in outburst. This makes it likely that we have detected the quiescent X-ray counterpart of GRO J1744-28. Our Chandra position demonstrates that the previously proposed infrared counterpart is not related to GRO J1744-28. The 0.5-10 keV luminosity of the source is 2 - 4 x 10^{33} erg/s (assuming the source is near the Galactic center at a distance of 8 kpc). I review our recent Chandra surveys of the center region of the Milky Way and other nearby edge-on galaxies. Our Galactic center survey provides an unprecedented high-resolution, broad-band X-ray panorama of a 0.8x2 square degree swath along the Galactic plane. Our preliminary analysis has led a detection of about 1000 discrete sources. We find that the diffuse X-ray emission dominates over the contribution from faint discrete sources and is globally associated with distinct interstellar structures observed at radio and mid-infrared wavelengths. We study how high-energy activities in the center region affect the immediate vicinity and may influence other aspects of the Galaxy. We have further observed nearby edge-on late-type disk galaxies in fields of low foreground Galactic extinction to gain external perspectives of the global disk/halo interaction. We have detected a giant diffuse X-ray-emitting corona around the galactic disk of NGC 4631. Extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission is also detected around NGC 3556. These X-ray-emitting coronae morphologically resemble the radio halos of these galaxies, indicating a close connection between outflows of hot gas, cosmic rays, and magnetic field from the galactic disks. There is only marginal evidence for extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission in NGC 4244 -- a galaxy with an extremely low star formation rate. In general, the extraplanar diffuse X-ray emission is evidently related to recent massive star forming activities in the galactic disks, especially in their central regions., Comment: 7 pages plus figures, based on an invited talk presented at Proc. We present a Chandra X-ray observation that shows, unambiguously for the first time, the presence of a giant diffuse X-ray-emitting corona around the edge-on disk galaxy NGC 4631. This corona, with a characteristic thermal temperature of 2-7\times10^6 K, extends as far as 8 kpc away from the galactic plane. The X-ray morphology resembles the radio halo of the galaxy, indicating a close connection between outflows of hot gas, cosmic rays, and magnetic field from the galactic disk. Enhanced diffuse X-ray emission is apparently enclosed by numerous H\alpha-emitting loops blistered out from the central disk of the galaxy, as is evident in a comparison with our deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging., Comment: 3 pages, 8 figures. I review recent results from our deep ROSAT and Chandra observations of two galaxies, M101 and NGC 4631, in fields of exceptionally low Galactic extinction. Large amounts of X-ray-emitting gas are detected in these galaxies. Such gas is produced primarily in massive star forming regions and have an average characteristic temperature of a few times $10^6$ K. Cooler gas ($\sim 10^6$ K) is found typically outside galactic disks and may represent outflows from blown-out superbubbles. Propagation of star formation, driven by the expansion of hot gas, appears to be operating in giant HII complexes. A substantial fraction of photo-evaporated gas in such complexes may be mass-loaded into hot gas, which explains their large X-ray luminosities. Recent ROSAT and ASCA X-ray observations as well as HST images have provided new insights into the structure and evolution of the 30 Dor nebula. I review hot gas properties of the nebula and discuss related physical processes. The structure of the nebula can be understood as outflows of hot and HII gases from the parent giant molecular cloud of R136. The dynamic mixing between the two gas phases is likely a key mass loading process of the hot gas, providing a natural explanation of both temperature and density structure of the nebula., 5 pages including 3 figures. Based on a deep ROSAT HRI observation, we have detected a pulsed signal in the 0.1-2 keV band from PSR J0537-6910 --- the recently discovered pulsar associated with the supernova remnant N157B in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The measured pulse period 0.01611548182 ms (+- 0.02 ns), Epoch MJD 50540.5, gives a revised linear spin-down rate of $5.1271 \times 10^{-14} s s^{-1}$, slightly greater than the previously derived value. The narrow pulse shape (FWHM = 10% duty cycle) in the ROSAT band resembles those seen in both XTE and ASCA data (> 2 keV), but there is also marginal evidence for an interpulse. This ROSAT detection enables us to locate the pulsar at R.A., Dec (J2000) = $5^h37^m47^s.2, -69^\circ 10' 23''$. With its uncertainty $\sim 3''$, this position coincides with the centroid of a compact X-ray source. But the pulsed emission accounts for only about 10% of the source luminosity $\sim 2 \times 10^{36} ergs^{-1}$ in the 0.1-2 keV band. These results support our previous suggestions: (1) The pulsar is moving at a high velocity ($\sim 10^3 km/s$); (2) A bow shock, formed around the pulsar, is responsible for most of the X-ray emission from the source; (3) A collimated outflow from the bow shock region powers a pulsar wind nebula that accounts for an elongated non-thermal radio and X-ray feature to the northwest of the pulsar., 6 pages including 3 figures. A definite prediction from recent N-body/hydro simulations of the structure formation of the universe is the presence of a diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) in a temperature range of 10^5 - 10^7 K. This hot phase of the IGM may account for most of the baryon content of the universe and may provide unique information on various physical and chemical processes of the structure formation. I review lines of observational evidence for the hot IGM. The topics include the decomposition of the soft X-ray background into point-like and diffuse components, the preliminary spectroscopic data from ASCA for a thermal component, the separation of the Galactic foreground from the extragalactic background, and the detection of individual hot IGM enhancements near rich clusters of galaxies. I characterize the global distribution of the 3/4 keV band background with a simple model of the hot Galactic corona, plus an isotropic extragalactic background. The corona is assumed to be approximately polytropic (index = 5/3) and hydrostatic in the gravitational potential of the Galaxy. The model accounts for X-ray absorption, and is constrained iteratively with the ROSAT all-sky X-ray survey data. Regions where the data deviate significantly from the model represent predominantly the Galactic disk and individual nearby hot superbubbles. The global distribution of the background, outside these regions, is well characterized by the model; the 1 sigma relative dispersion of the data from the model is about 15%. The electron density and temperature of the corona near the Sun are about 1.1 x 10^{-3} cm^{-3} and about 1.7 x 10^6 K. The same model also explains well the 1.5 keV band background.
