Archaeometry published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of University of Oxford Analytical ceramic studies offer the opportunity to determine cultural development and change on the basis of origin and use of raw materials. In this particular study, an archaeometric approach on ceramics in central Pisidia contributes to the discussion of contact and exchange between indigenous communities and several cultural spheres of influence on a long-term timescale (eighth to second centuries bce). Morphological data as well as mineralogical (optical microscopy; n = 273) and chemical composition (by ICP–OES/MS; n = 122) of ceramics and raw materials show distinct resource zones for the production and distribution of ceramics in this connecting region of Anatolia. The use of trace element profiles (REE, HFSE, LILE and TTE) in particular is regarded as instrumental in detailing high-resolution provenancing of ceramics. The ceramic provenance indicates different patterns of material interactions during the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods. Datos arqueozoológicos y arqueológicos del yacimiento de Sagalassos (Turquía sudoccidental) se combinan con otros procedentes de análisis geoquímicos de elementos traza en los huesos animales para documentar la relación cambiante entre la urbe y el ámbito rural desde el I al vII siglo AD. Estos datos evidencian que durante el periodo imperial temprano y medio 25 BC-300 AD los requisitos de aprovisionamiento de la ciudad se fundamentaban mayoritariamente en la capacidad productora de su entorno más inmediato, una zona altamente contaminada, por lo que los habitantes de Sagalassos hacían poco uso del entorno rural. Durante el periodo Romano Tardío 300-400 AD se reforzó la integración entre la ciudad y su entorno rural y es, en este momento, cuando más productos rurales parecen haber alcanzado Sagalassos. En este último periodo los restos animales presentan un contenido significativo inferior de metales por lo que deben haberse originado en cabañas que se mantenían alejadas de la zona de contaminación intensa. Al mismo tiempo la densidad de ocupación del campo alcanzó entonces su clímax. En el periodo Bizantino Temprano (450-700 AD) los habitantes parecen haber retornado a la situación documentada en el período Imperial Temprano y Medio siendo entonces mantenidos por la explotación de las tierras más próximas a la ciudad.

Absorbed lipid residues from 24 seventh- to ninth-century coarseware potsherds from the major Anglo-Saxon trading centre of Hamwic (Southampton, UK) were analysed by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC–MS) in order to reconstruct the dietary habits of its population. The results show that the vessels were used for preparing ruminant fats and leafy vegetables. In addition, evidence was found for a minor contribution of aquatic foods. Beeswax was found once and most probably relates to a sealing function or to honey. Remarkable features were: (i) the isomeric mixture of octadecenoic acid (C18:1 Δ7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16) and 8- to 16-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid, and (ii) the co-occurrence of C17:1, C19:1 and isoprenoid fatty acids. These features were proposed as biomarkers for ruminant and aquatic food sources, respectively. Furthermore, the carbonyl position distribution in mid-chain ketones was used to identify mixtures of animal- and plant-derived ketones. The paper highlights the difficulty in interpreting complex lipid signatures that show a mixture of various foods, as observed in the majority of the samples. This was linked to the preparation of stews or the recycling of vessels. The results are considered alongside ceramic usewear data and existing data relating to environmental remains recovered from the Hamwic excavations.

Starting in March 2002, when the first Conference was organized in Barcelona, a great effort was made to ensure the continuity of these international meetings held every three years. Each time the results of more and more extended research are presented. Increasing numbers of papers document the success of this initiative: LRCW1 and LRCW2 included 48 and 73 papers respectively in present volumes there are 105 papers. As at Barcelona and Aix-en-Provence, Marseille and Arles, many archaeologists (230 of 303 enrolled) took part in the Parma-Pisa Conference, coming from 25 different countries: 50 papers and 104 posters were presented. The excavations of Roman and Early Byzantine contexts at the town of Sagalassos (Turkey) yielded fish remains belonging to species that do not occur near the site. The modern geographical distribution of the identified fish indicates trade with various regions of Anatolia, the Mediterranean coast, Egypt and/or the Levant. Trade with Levant and Egypt is evident throughout the period by the presence of Clarias, a catfish living amongst others in the Nile and Levant. Mitochondrial DNA analysis was successfully carried out on modern populations of this species from Turkey, Syria, Israel and Egypt. Several variable regions were discovered on the mitochondrial control region containing polymorphisms that distinguish the haplotypes. Primer sets were designed to amplify small fragments of ancient DNA containing these informative regions. Ancient fish DNA could be successfully extracted, amplified and sequenced. The analyses indicate that the catfish bones belong to Clarias gariepinus and that they originated from the lower Nile. In addition, this study sheds light on the understanding of the modern distribution of C. gariepinus in Anatolia.

For a long time, Turkey was terra incognita in glass studies. Little by little, glass typologies have been published, although a comprehensive treatment of glass as a separate category of small finds is still awaited. A large gap in our knowledge continues to exist, particularly regarding the technology of glass production. No in-depth analysis of workshop-related finds has yet been published. With this article, the authors offer an overview and evaluation of various types of finds related to glass production. These finds were made in present-day Turkey, and they date from the beginnings of glassworking in antiquity to the Middle Byzantine period. Knowledge of the geology is essential to evaluate the possible occurrences of raw materials in a given area. It also forms the base for geomorphological and soil-engineering studies. The mineralogical and geochemical characterisation of the immediate subsurface constitutes the background for environmental investigations such as the reconstruction of the palaeoclimate and to determine anthropogenic influences based on geochemistry. Since 1989, prof. Willy Viaene and his team carried out a systematic study of the geology in the area of the archaeological site of Sagalassos. The present work is a tribute to prof. Willy Viaene and summarizes the work performed by his group and colleagues to fully characterize and understand the rocks, exploited and used in ancient times.
