In differential gene expression data analysis, one objective is to identify groups of co-expressed genes from a large dataset in order to detect the association between such a group of genes and an experimental condition. This is often done through a clustering approach, such as k-means or bipartition hierarchical clustering, based on particular similarity measures in the grouping process. In such a dataset, the gene differential expression itself is an innate attribute that can be used in the feature extraction process. For example, in a dataset consisting of multiple treatments versus their controls, the expression of a gene in each treatment would have three possible behaviors, upregulated, downregulated, or unchanged. We present in this chapter, a differential expression feature extraction (DEFE) method by using a string consisting of three numerical values at each character to denote such behavior, i.e., 1 ¼ up, 2 ¼ down, and 0 ¼ unchanged, which results in up to 3B differential expression patterns across all B comparisons. This approach has been successfully applied in many research projects, and among these, we demonstrate the strength of DEFE in a case study on RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) data analysis of wheat challenged with the phytopathogenic fungus, Fusarium graminearum. Leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina, is the most common rust disease of wheat. The fungus is an obligate parasite capable of producing infectious urediniospores. To study the genetic structure of the leaf rust population 20 RAPD primers were evaluated on 15 isolates samples collected in Pakistan. A total of 105 RAPD fragments were amplified with an average of 7 fragments per primer. The number of amplified fragments varied from 1 to 12. GL Decamer L-07 and GL Decamer L-01 amplified the highest number of bands (twelve) and primer GL Decamer A-03 amplified the lowest number of bands i.e one. Results showed that almost all investigated isolates were genetically different that confirms high genetic diversity within the leaf rust population. Rust spores can follow the migration pattern in short and long distances to neighbor areas. Results indicated that the greatest variability was revealed by 74.9% of genetic differentiation within leaf rust populations. These results suggested that each population was not completely identical and high gene flow has occurred among the leaf rust population of different areas. The highest differentiation and genetic distance among the Pakistani leaf rust populations were detected between the leaf rust population in NARC isolate (NARC-4) and AARI-11and the highest similarity was observed between NARC isolates (NARC-4) and (NARC-5). The present study showed the leaf rust population in Pakistan is highly dynamic and variable. Resumo A ferrugem da folha, causada por Puccinia triticina, é a ferrugem mais comum do trigo. O fungo é um parasita obrigatório, capaz de produzir urediniósporos infecciosos. Para estudar a estrutura genética da população de ferrugem da folha, 20 primers RAPD foram avaliados em 15 amostras de isolados coletadas no Paquistão. Um total de 105 fragmentos RAPD foram amplificados com uma média de 7 fragmentos por primer. O número de fragmentos amplificados variou de 1 a 12. GL Decamer L-07 e GL Decamer L-01 amplificaram o maior número de bandas (doze), e o primer GL Decamer A-03 amplificou o menor número de bandas, ou seja, um. Rodents can cause significant damage to wheat-groundnut crops in developing countries, as well as to stored produce and infrastructure, affecting food security and income of small-holder farmers. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) and groundnuts (Arachis hypogea) are important cash crops for local farmers in Pakistan. Field experiments were performed to assess the extent of rodent damage to wheat-groundnut crops throughout their growth stages (i.e, germination, flowering/peg formation and maturity) in the agro-ecological zones of Pothwar Plateau, Pakistan. We used a quadrat method to record the number of damaged crop plants. On the basis of the trapping data four rodent species were captured from wheat-groundnut cropping systems which were responsible for causing damage, i.e., lesser bandicoot rat (Bandicota bengalensis) was the main species, followed by the short-tailed mole rat (Nesokia indica), the Indian gerbil (Tatera indica) and the bush rat (Golunda ellioti). In both crops, the maximum damage was recorded at crop maturity (10.7 and 14.4%, respectively). The lowest reported damage to wheat and groundnuts was at the germination stage (3.5% and 6.0%, respectively). The lower damage reported at germination could be due to availability of non-crop vegetation at field borders that may be a potential factor influencing damage. Our findings clearly show the considerable amount of damage caused by rodents to wheat-groundnut at maturity across all the agro-ecological zones of Pothwar and indicated that the small mammal composition was more related to maturity stage/season of crops, when the availability of food and climatic condition were favorable and having security under crop shelter. More detailed studies are needed to fully understand the population and breeding ecology of the relevant rodent pest species in relation to damage patterns to optimize management beyond individual structural measures. Resumo Os roedores podem causar danos significativos às culturas de trigo e amendoim nos países em desenvolvimento, bem como aos produtos armazenados e infraestrutura, afetando a segurança alimentar e a renda dos pequenos agricultores. O trigo (Triticum aestivum) e o amendoim (Arachis hypogea) são culturas comerciais importantes para os agricultores locais no Paquistão. Experimentos de campo foram realizados para avaliar a extensão dos danos de roedores às culturas de trigo e amendoim ao longo de seus estágios de crescimento (ou seja, germinação, floração/formação e maturidade) nas zonas agroecológicas de Pothwar Plateau, Paquistão. Usamos um método de quadrat para registrar o número de plantas de cultura danificadas. Com base nos dados de armadilhagem foram capturadas quatro espécies de roedores de sistemas de cultivo de trigo-amendoim que foram responsáveis por causar danos, ou seja, o rato-bandico-pequeno (Bandicota bengalensis) foi a espécie principal, seguido pelo rato-toupeira-de-cauda-curta (Nesokia indica), o gerbilo-da-índia (Tatera indica) e o rato-do-mato (Golunda ellioti). Em ambas as culturas, o dano máximo foi registrado na maturidade da cultura (10,7 e 14,4%, respectivamente). O menor dano relatado ao trigo e ao amendoim foi no estágio de germinação (3,5% e 6,0%, respectivamente). O menor dano relatado na germinação pode ser devido à disponibilidade de vegetação não cultivada nas bordas do campo, que pode ser um fator potencial que influencia o dano. Nossos resultados mostraram claramente a quantidade considerável de danos causados por roedores ao trigo-amendoim na maturidade em todas as zonas agroecológicas de Pothwar e indicaram que a composição de pequenos mamíferos estava mais relacionada ao estágio de maturidade/estação das culturas quando a disponibilidade de alimentos e as condições climáticas eram favoráveis e com segurança sob abrigo de cultivo. Estudos mais detalhados são necessários para entender completamente a ecologia populacional e reprodutiva das espécies de pragas de roedores relevantes em relação aos padrões de danos para otimizar o manejo, além das medidas estruturais individuais.

An increase in the yield of the main cereal crops in the context of global climate changes requires additional impacts on plants. Natural and synthetic plant growth regulators (PGRs) are used to increase plant productivity and reduce the injury level caused by abiotic stressors. There is a growing need for novel highly effective plant growth stimulants to exhibit their effects at low doses and to not pose an environmental threat or injury to the crop quality. The derivatives of sydnone imine (SI), a mesoionic heterocycle possessing a 1,2,3-oxadiazole core, have been used as medicines until now but have not been used for agricultural applications. Some SI derivatives have recently been found to exhibit PGR properties. Herein, we report on the study of the PGR potential of nine SI derivatives bearing variable substituents at N(3), C(4), and N6 positions of the heterocycle designed to disclose the “molecular structure-PGR activity” relationship in this family. The SI derivatives were used in a wide concentration range (10−9–10−4 mol/L) for a pre-sowing treatment of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., two cultivars) and maize (Zea mays L., two hybrids) seeds in germinating experiments. All compounds were found to affect the growth of the axial organs of germinants, with the growth-stimulating or -inhibitory effect as well as its rate being considerably different for wheat and maize and, in many cases, also for roots and shoots. In addition, a pronounced concentration dependence of the effect was disclosed for many cases. The features of the molecular structure of SIs affecting their growth-regulating properties were elucidated. Compounds 4, 6, 7, and 8, which had exhibited a growth-promoting effect in germinating experiments, were used at appropriate concentrations for pot experiments on the same crops. For all compounds, the experiments showed a stimulating effect on the growth of roots (up to 80%), shoots (up to 112%), leaf area (up to 113%), fresh weights of roots (up to 83%), and aerial parts of the plants (up to 87%) or only on some of these parameters. The obtained results show a healthy outlook for the use of SI derivatives as promoting agents for improving the growth of cereal crop plants.

Antioxidant properties of phenolic compounds are presumed responsible for several health benefits due to their capacity to scavenge free radicals and chelate metals prevenient oxidative stress. Since these compounds are ubiquitous in plants, including cereals, the available antioxidant potential profile of wheat genotypes could allow the development of new cultivars with an increased nutritional value that may result in antioxidant-rich foods. In this study, total phenolics content (TPC) was quantified in the whole grain flour of 92 wheat (46 genotypes each from bread and durum) genotypes, which were evaluated under field conditions during 2 different crop seasons (2004-05 and 2009-10). Of the ninety-two, fourteen (six and eight from bread and durum wheat, respectively) genotypes were comprehensively evaluated for antioxidant activity [2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and reducing power] and ferulic acid contents. The results revealed that substantial genotypic variability exists for TPC in wheat genotypes with a mean value of 991 and 787 µg ferulic acid equivalents (FAE)/g DW in bread and durum wheat, respectively. Moreover, bound phenolics as a source of ferulic acid, including both cis- and trans-isomers, were observed as a major contributor to the total phenolics, which must be considered in assessing the antioxidant activity in wheat grain. In conclusion, these findings may also help improve wheat grains as natural sources of antioxidants utilizing selected genotypes in breeding programs.

The use of anaerobic digestates as fertilizer is proposed as a means to close agricultural nutrient cycles. However, digestates have higher inorganic nitrogen contents than raw manures, which could translate into increased emissions of potent greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4). To mitigate these emissions, the addition of biochar with high nutrient absorption capacity is suggested. To quantify the effects of anaerobic digestion and biochar amendment on N2O and CH4 emissions, we conducted a study over 33 months with four different crops (silage maize, winter wheat, winter barley, and forage grass). We measured soil parameters such as mineral nitrogen, moisture, and temperature. The N2O emissions after application of digestates were generally similar to those observed after cattle slurry or mineral fertilizer application. The highest N2O emissions were observed in the first year of the experiment during maize cultivation and were strongly influenced by high soil nitrate concentrations, which were likely linked to enhanced soil organic N mineralization after ley termination. The CH4 emissions were mostly negative. The addition of biochar to co-digested manure before application at an annual rate of 2 t ha− 1 had no effect on N2O emissions but led to short-lived CH4 peaks from organic fertilizers directly after spreading. We conclude that digestates do not promote larger N2O emissions than mineral fertilizers or cattle slurry, and that biochar addition to digestates in small application quantities does not reduce N2O emissions but bears the risk of CH4 release., Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment, 356, ISSN:0167-8809, ISSN:1873-2305

Aspergillus flavuswas isolated from the soil field cultivated with wheat crop (Triticum astevium L.), which was treated with Topik EC 100 (Clodinafop-propargyl) herbicide in Al-Fuhud city, southeast of Thi-Qar Governorate-Iraq. soil samples were collected at a depth of (0-15) cm for a period of 17 weeks, and the fungus were isolated from the soil by dilution method, the pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter and soil texture were measured. the results showed thatAspergillus flavuswas dominant in this study, where the percentage of appearance ofAspergillus flavuswas 86%. the fungus was treated with the active ingredient Clodinafop-propargyl of Topik 100 EC herbicide in solid and liquid media (Mineral salt medium). the fungus showed its ability to grow in the medium containing the active substance. the results showed thatAspergillus flavuscould biodegrade the active ingredient. the substances were measured by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and Gas chromatography- mass spectroscopy, the results showed that biodegradation percentage of the active ingredient Clodinafop-propargyl at a concentration 0.01 ppm byAspergillus flavuswas 80%.&nbsp

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 accelerated agricultural commodity prices and raised food insecurities worldwide. Ukraine and Russia are the leading global suppliers of wheat, corn, barley and sunflower oil. For this purpose, we investigated the relationship among these four agricultural commodities and, at the same time, predicted their future performance. The series covers the period from 1 January 1990 to 1 August 2022, based on monthly frequencies. The VAR impulse response function, variance decomposition, Granger Causality Test and vector error correction model were used to analyze relationships between variables. The results indicate that corn prices are an integral part of price changes in wheat, barley and sunflower oil. Wheat prices are also essential but with a weaker influence than that of corn. The additional purpose of this study was to forecast their price changes ten months ahead. The Vector Autoregressive (VAR) and Vector Error Correction (VECM) fanchart estimates an average price decline in corn, wheat, barley and sunflower oil in the range of 10%. From a policy perspective, the findings provide reliable signals for countries exposed to food insecurities and inflationary risk. Recognizing the limitations that predictions maintain, the results provide modest signals for relevant agencies, international regulatory authorities, retailers and low-income countries. Moreover, stakeholders can become informed about their price behavior and the causal relationship they hold with each other.

Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt) is a globally important fungal pathogen of wheat that can rapidly evolve to defeat wheat powdery mildew (Pm) resistance genes. Despite periodic regional deployment of the Pm1a resistance gene in U.S. wheat production, Bgt strains that overcome Pm1a have been notably non-persistent in the U.S., while on other continents they are more widely established. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted to map sequence variants associated with Pm1a virulence in 216 Bgt isolates from six countries, including the U.S. A virulence variant apparently unique to Bgt isolates from the U.S. was detected in the previously mapped gene AvrPm1a (BgtE-5612) on Bgt chromosome 6; an in-vitro growth assay suggested no fitness reduction associated with this variant. A gene on Bgt chromosome 8, Bgt-51526, was shown to function as a second determinant of Pm1a virulence and despite 85% of their secondary structure. A co-expression study in Nicotiana benthamiana showed that BGTE-5612 and BGT-51526 each produce a PM1A-dependent hypersensitive response. More than one member of a B. graminis effector family can be recognized by a single wheat immune receptor, and a two-gene model is necessary to explain virulence to Pm1a.

Product simulation programs with DSSAT are based on the principle of predicting the potentials of yield and other phenological parameters of wheat varieties with different fertilizer application doses in different climatic and soil conditions. For this purpose, different wheat varieties (Bayraktar, Tosunbey) were used in order to test the use of the DSSAT simulation model in semi-arid conditions in the Ikizce experimental area of the Haymana District of Ankara Province, Field Crops Central Research Institute, during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 periods. The aim of this study is to predict yield in wheat varieties (Bayraktar, Tosunbey) using CERES and CROPGRO sub-models of DSSAT v.4.7.5 simulation model. In the study, the model was run at different nitrogen application doses (0, 6, 12, 18 kg/da) to reveal the yield prediction potential of the wheat cultivars in semi-arid conditions. For the calibration of the model, the grain yield, plant height and Leaf area index (LAI) data obtained were used in the first year of wheat development stage.The accuracy of the model, which was calibrated with the first year data, was tested with the second year data. For Bayraktar variety, the average measured yield obtained from different nitrogen dose applications (N0,N6,N18) for the 2017-2018 period is 373.3 kg/da, the simulated yield is 373.7 kg/da (N12 dose is neglected), the measured yield for 2018-2019 300. 5 kg/da, the simulated yield was found to be 291.3 kg/da.For the Tosunbey variety, the average yield measured for the 2017-2018 period was 370.0 kg/da, the simulated yield was 338.0 kg/da, the measured yield for the 2018-2019 year was 217.58 kg/da, and the estimated yield was 237.83 kg/da.

Flooding induces low-oxygen stress, which reduces plant growth. The activity of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) shunt is crucial for plant stress adaptation, in which it acts by changing cytosolic pH, limiting reactive oxygen species production, regulating nitrogen metabolism, and bypassing steps in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. GABA accumulates under osmotic stress as well as flooding stress. To clarify the dynamic roles of GABA accumulation in wheat under flooding stress, biochemical and enzymatic analyses were performed using a plant-derived smoke solution (PDSS), which rescued wheat growth from flooding stress. Alcohol dehydrogenase abundance increased under flooding stress; however, under the same conditions, pyruvic acid content increased only following PDSS application. Glutamic acid content increased under flooding stress, but decreased following the application of PDSS after 2 days of flooding. Glutamate decarboxylase abundance and GABA content increased under flooding stress, and further increased after 1 day of application of PDSS. Succinyl semialdehyde dehydrogenase accumulated after 2 days of flooding. These results suggest that flooding stress increases GABA content along with the increase and decrease of glutamate decarboxylase and succinyl semialdehyde dehydrogenase, respectively. Additionally, PDSS increased GABA content along with the increase of glutamate decarboxylase abundance at the initial stage of application.

Purpose and Objectives. To evaluate the expression of the "protein content in grain" trait in winter bread wheat lines derived from late-ripening accessions of the Western European ecotype; to construct correlation-regression models for the relationships of the protein content in grain with the "anthesis - grain ripeness" interphase period length and grain yield in elite accessions grown in breeding nurseries. Material and Methods. The field studies were carried out at the Institute of Irrigated Agriculture of NAAS in 2019–2021. Modern winter wheat varieties bred at the Institute, collection specimens of the Western European ecotype, which had been introduced from France (registration numbers Kf1...16), and their hybrids were studied. Individual selections of elite plants from F2 were brought to the control nursery and evaluated for protein content in grain, yield, "anthesis - ripeness" period and other economic characteristics. Biometric measurements, biochemical analyses, and yield records were conducted by traditional methods. The study methods were field, laboratory, biochemical, breeding-genetic, and statistical. The studies were carried out under irrigation conditions at the pre-irrigation field moisture capacity (FMC) in the 0–50 cm soil layer of 75%. Results and Discussion. The expression of the "protein content in grain" trait in the breeding accessions selected from hybrid populations, which had been originated from Western European ecotypes of winter bread wheat, was analyzed; the correlation-regression models of the relationships between the protein content in grain, the grain yield and the "anthesis - ripeness" period were constructed. The “anthesis – ripeness” period in the best accessions lasted 45 - 52 days, and each original hybrid combination had its own optimum, which was associated with a high yield and protein content in grain. Extension of the "anthesis - ripeness" period slightly increased the grain yields of the breeding accessions from some hybrid populations; however, analogous effect on the protein content in grain was insignificant. Conclusions. A concurrent increase in the grain yield and protein content in grain through traditional selections is possible; however, such parallel enhancement of these traits is more suitable for heterogeneous hybrid populations with low protein contents grain and yields, or with low values of one of these traits (low protein content). For each hybrid population from parents contrasting in vegetation length, it is necessary to develop a specific plan of selections with due account for intra-population correlation-regression models of yield capacity, protein content in grain and “anthesis – ripeness” period length.

The nutritional safety of wheat-based food products is compromised by the presence of the processing contaminant acrylamide. Reduction of the key acrylamide precursor, free (soluble, non-protein) asparagine, in wheat grain can be achieved through crop management strategies, but such strategies have not been fully developed. We ran two field trials with 12 soft (biscuit) wheat varieties and different nitrogen, sulphur, potassium, and phosphorus fertilizer combinations. Our results indicated that a nitrogen to sulphur ratio of 10:1 kg/ha was sufficient to prevent large increases in free asparagine, whereas withholding potassium or phosphorus alone did not cause increases in free asparagine when sulphur was applied. Multispectral measurements of plants in the field were able to predict the free asparagine content of grain with an accuracy of 71 % whilst a combination of multispectral, fluorescence, and morphological measurements of seeds could distinguish high free asparagine grain from low free asparagine grain with an accuracy of 86 %. The acrylamide content of biscuits correlated strongly with free asparagine content and with color measurements, indicating that agronomic strategies to decrease free asparagine would be effective and that quality control checks based on product color could eliminate high acrylamide biscuit products.

Leaf, spike, stem, and root morphologies are key factors that determine crop growth, development, and productivity. Multiple genes that control these morphological traits have been identified in Arabidopsis, rice, maize, and other plant species. However, little is known about the genomic regions and genes associated with morphological traits in wheat. Here, we identified the ethyl methanesulfonate-derived mutant wheat line M133 that displays multiple morphological changes that include upward-curled leaves, paired spikelets, dwarfism, and delayed heading. Using bulked segregant RNA sequencing (BSR-seq) and a high-resolution genetic map, we identified TraesCS1D02G155200 (HB-D2) as a potential candidate gene. HB-D2 encodes a class III homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-ZIP III) transcription factor, and the mutation was located in the miRNA165/166 complementary site, resulting in a resistant allele designated rHb-D2. The relative expression of rHb2 in the mutant plants was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than in plants homozygous for the WT allele. Independent resistant mutations that disrupt the miRNA165/166 complementary sites in the A- (rHb-A2) and B-genome (rHb-B2) homoeologs showed similar phenotypic alterations, but the relative intensity of the effects was different. Transgenic plants expressing rHb-D2 gene driven by the maize UBIQUITIN (UBI) promoter showed similar phenotypes to the rHb-D2 mutant. These results confirmed that HB-D2 is the causal gene responsible for the mutant phenotypes. Finally, a survey of 1397 wheat accessions showed that the complementary sites for miRNA165/166 in all three HB2 homoeologs are highly conserved. Our results suggest that HB2 plays an important role in regulating growth and development in wheat.

Changes in climate and shifting patterns of drought threaten the growth of important cash crops like wheat. The element silicon serves as a plant nutrient and shows promise for strengthening wheat against drought while remaining safe to both the crop and the positive bacteria that grow on its roots. Silicon can be added to wheat in the form of silicon-dioxide nanoparticles featuring protective coatings made from plant-beneficial nutrients. These nanoparticles can be engineered with high surface area or porous structures allowing them to be loaded with additional nutrients that can be delivered to crops. In a laboratory setting, such nanoparticles were found to adhere to wheat roots after more than 21 d growth in sand, implying direct and lasting delivery of silicon to the roots. A small, plant-beneficial molecule, glycine betaine, is produced by wheat and other crops as a natural defense mechanism against drought and salt stress, making it a desirable nanocarrier payload for reducing detrimental side effects. Glycine betaine is reported to improve protein stability and photosynthesis in wheat, and these effects are known to increase in the presence of a surfactant. Pluronic F68 is an effective nanoparticle-stabilizing surfactant coating that can help encapsulate glycine betaine within silicon-dioxide nanoparticles and aid both glycine betaine and elemental silicon in reaching crops when added to the field. Here, Pluronic F68-coated silicon-dioxide nanocarriers are explored for enhancing glycine betaine delivery to wheat and the beneficial wheat-root bacterium, Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6. A green synthesis for Pluronic F68-coated silicon-dioxide nanoparticles is demonstrated for field-recommended doses of silicon and concentrations of Pluronic F68 that improve wheat growth by 9-12% within 5 weeks. The nanocarriers and all their components are nontoxic to wheat and the wheat-root microbiome for the tested concentrations. They were shown to effectively incorporate into wheat root epidermal cells and translocate into wheat shoots and trichomes. Glycine betaine, but not Pluronic-F68 is consumed by Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6 without the aid of protective nanocarriers, and may ultimately benefit from nanocarrier-assisted delivery to ensure delivery to the plant.

The increasing use of nanofertilizers in modern agriculture and their impact on crop yield and pest management require further research. In this study, the effects of nano-Fe, -Zn, and -Cu (which are synthesized based on nanochelating technology), and urea (N) fertilizers on the antioxidant activities of wheat plants (cv. Chamran), and the wheat green aphid Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) are investigated. The authors observed the highest levels of phenolics in non-infested nano-Zn-treated plants (26% higher compared with control). The highest H2O2 levels are in the infested and non-infested nano-Zn-treated and infested nano-Fe-treated plants (in infested nano-Zn and nano-Fe treated plants, 18% and non-infested nano-Zn-treated plants, 28% higher compared with control). The highest peroxidase (POX) activity is observed in the infested and non-infested N-treated and non-infested water-treated plants (almost 14%, 37%, and 46% higher than control, respectively). The lowest activity is in the infested plants’ nano-Zn and -Fe treatments (almost 7 and 5 folds lower compared to the control, respectively). The highest and lowest catalase (CAT) activity are in the infested N-treated plants (almost 42% higher than control) and water-treated plants, respectively. The infested nano-Zn, -Fe, -Cu and Hoagland-treated plants showed the highest superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Regarding the antioxidant enzyme activities of S. graminum, the highest POX activity is in the nano-Cu treatment (more than two folds higher compared with control); the highest CAT and SOD activities are in the nano-Cu and -Zn treatments. It can be concluded that the application of nanofertilizers caused increasing effects on the wheat plant’s antioxidant system and its resistance to S. graminum.

Ethylene has an important role in regulating plant growth and development as well as responding to adversity stresses. The 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase (ACS) is the rate-limiting enzyme for ethylene biosynthesis. However, the role of the ACS gene family in wheat has not been examined. In this study, we identified 12 ACS members in wheat. According to their position on the chromosome, we named them TaACS1-TaACS12, which were divided into four subfamilies, and members of the same subfamilies had similar gene structures and protein-conserved motifs. Evolutionary analysis showed that fragment replication was the main reason for the expansion of the TaACS gene family. The spatiotemporal expression specificity showed that most of the members had the highest expression in roots, and all ACS genes contained W box elements that were related to root development, which suggested that the ACS gene family might play an important role in root development. The results of the gene expression profile analysis under stress showed that ACS members could respond to a variety of stresses. Protein interaction prediction showed that there were four types of proteins that could interact with TaACS. We also obtained the targeting relationship between TaACS family members and miRNA. These results provided valuable information for determining the function of the wheat ACS gene, especially under stress.

This article serves as a continuation of our previously published work and focuses on loose material transport via sandwich belt conveyors. Experimental, analytical, stochastic, and numerical approaches are used to obtain and utilize the moduli of a bilateral Winkler elastic foundation that represent a loose material, which is wheat (Triticum aestivum) that is free of bran in this case. The solutions were obtained for a uniformly and nonuniformly distributed loose material. The task of the conveyor with loose material is simplified into a symmetric task, i.e., a beam on an elastic bilateral Winkler foundation, for an analytical solution and stochastic solution (Anthill and Matlab sw). In a numerical approach, this is considered a plane strain problem within the finite element method (Ansys and MSC.Marc sw). The experimental data are evaluated and used to obtain the functions of Winkler elastic foundation moduli, which are further considered in the numerical solution. The finite element method mainly serves as a verification tool. The acquired histograms of the elastic foundation moduli can be further applied in various scientific and research fields.

Wheat and corn silages are widely used as ruminant feed in Israel due to their availability and cost-effectiveness. To ensure long-term preservation without compromising nutritional quality, effective methods must be employed. The inclusion of additives during harvest and ensiling can enhance efficiency and address preservation challenges. In the current study, the effects of microbial inoculum (MI) and urea on the chemical composition, amino acid profiles, aerobic stability, and in vitro digestibility of wheat and corn silages were investigated. Samples of wheat and corn were subjected to four treatments: control, MI, urea and a combination of MI + urea. The treatments were ensiled in anaerobic conditions and opened after 1, 7, 14 or 28 days. The results showed that additives improved the quality parameters of wheat and corn silages. The inclusion of MI produced the most aerobically stable silages. The inclusion of urea in silages decreased aerobic stability. Additives improved in vitro cell wall carbohydrates’ digestibility in both silages and was the best when MI was combined with urea. These results imply that additives could be incorporated in silages to enhance their nutritional value, aerobic stability and digestibility. Nonetheless, increased CP content with additives was not accompanied with a parallel increase in amino acids’ content in corn silage.

Wheat represents one of the most widely consumed cereals worldwide. Cultivated in winter and spring, it is vulnerable to an array of different pathogens, including fungi, which are managed largely through the in-field application of fungicides. During this study, a 4-year field investigation (2018–2021) was performed in France, aiming to assess the efficacy of fungicide treatment to reduce mycotoxin contamination in common and durum wheat. Several different commercially available fungicides were applied via sprayers. Concentrations of mycotoxins and fungal metabolites in wheat were determined using a multi-analyte liquid-chromatography–tandem-mass-spectrometry-based method. The highest contamination levels and strongest effects of fungicides were observed in 2018, followed by 2021. A significant fungicide-mediated reduction was observed for the trichothecenes deoxynivalenol, deoxynivalenol-3-glucoside, nivalenol, and nivalenol-3-glucoside. Furthermore, fungicide treatment also reduced levels of culmorin and its hydroxy metabolites 5- and 15-hydroxy-culmorin, as well as aurofusarin. Interestingly, the Alternaria metabolite infectopyron was increased following fungicide treatment. In conclusion, fungicide treatment was effective in reducing mycotoxin levels in wheat. However, as complete prevention of mycotoxin contamination was not achieved, fungicide treatment should always be combined with other pre- and post-harvest mycotoxin mitigation strategies to improve food and feed safety.

This article shows the effect that biogases obtained from crop residuals from the Andean region have on the performance of a whole medium-sized electrical-generating gas turbine. This technology could be used to supply electricity in energy-depressed areas where biogas is the only accessible resource. The gas turbine worked with higher efficiencies when the obtained biogases were used compared to natural gas. The biofuel that presented the highest efficiencies was the one obtained from wheat residuals alone. Despite this fact, this biofuel would be the most prone to create aerodynamic problems in the stages of the gas turbine. In this work, it was found that the addition of guinea pig manure to different crop residuals created biofuels less prone to create aerodynamic problems in the compression and expansion stages. In particular, the studied biofuel that had the most similar aerodynamic behavior to the design natural gas case was the one obtained from guinea pig manure and quinoa residuals. On the other hand, this biogas presented the lowest efficiencies of the studied biofuels. Despite this fact, this biofuel showed higher efficiencies than the natural gas case. In the gas turbine combustion chamber, all the studied biofuels operated at lower temperatures than the ones with natural gas, even in the high-power range. This would be an important feature for the running of the combustion chamber and the high-pressure turbine superalloys.

Local agrobiodiversity in remote areas such as the Moroccan High Atlas is poorly studied, despite being of great importance for the sustainability and resilience of mountainous populations. This includes important species such as wheat (Triticum spp.), barley (Hordeum vulgare), fava beans (Vicia faba), peas (Pisum sativum), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa). This study aimed to better understand varietal naming by farmers and the traits they use for assessing the current diversity of the five species, in 22 locations, distributed across three hubs of the High Atlas. The data were provided by 282 Amazigh informants during focus-group discussions, household surveys, and market surveys, with the support of the Diversity Assessment Tool for Agrobiodiversity and Resilience (DATAR). The use of local terminology for variety names and systematically collected morphological, ecological, and use descriptors appears to be a valuable way to assess local intraspecific diversity, and further comparisons with genomic results are recommended. Furthermore, the results also indicate low diversity at the household level, which contrasts with the greater diversity at the community level. Larger areas are still planted with landraces compared to areas planted with modern varieties, although the levels of richness (number) of both landraces and modern varieties are equivalent overall. Many factors influence this diversity: the biophysical characteristics of the sites, the socio-economic and management practices of farmers, and the availability of varietal diversity and of modern varieties or landraces. Although selection processes have reduced the local diversity available for economically important crops, we found that farmers still rely greatly on landraces, which present traits and variability that allow them to adapt to local conditions.

There is an urgent need to increase cereal yields in the Ethiopian Highlands to ensure national food security. A major crop response-to-fertilizer program was set up in 2017–2019 as part of the CASCAPE project in the Ethiopian Highlands. It covered 33 experiments on maize, teff and wheat in five reference soil groups (Nitisols, Luvisols, Vertisols, Leptosols and Andosols). Five levels of multi-nutrient fertilizer (50–300 kg NPSZnB ha− 1 and 100 kg urea ha− 1) were applied. At the lower fertilizer level, average yields were 5500, 1500 and 3300 kg ha− 1 for maize, teff and wheat, respectively. At the highest rate, yields were 7900, 2100 and 5000 kg ha− 1. Maize and wheat yields were strongly correlated to the reference soil groups, but not to rainfall differences. Wheat yields were also positively correlated to soil organic carbon levels, underpinning the need to apply integrated soil fertility management. Comparing NPSZnB fertilizers with NPS and DAP fertilizers revealed a lack of statistically significant advantage for the fertilizers including Zn and B. As B was present in fine-granular form in the fertilizer bags, being prone to segregation, firm conclusions on the need for this micronutrient cannot be drawn. The use of ‘recommendation windows’ is suggested to group results into concrete packages at district levels and below, preferably combined with soil maps since soil types were correlated with maize and wheat yields. The windows could then be the starting point to develop ‘last mile’ fertilizer use policies, relevant to farmers and the way they manage their fields in the landscape.

This research determined price volatility spillovers among major wheat markets in the world using time series data (1966-2018) of six major wheat producing countries in the world. The data were sourced from FAO and UNCTAD databanks and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, multiple regression, unit root test and GARCH models. The findings showed that there is low and high persistence in the wheat prices of Canada and USA; and, Australia and India, respectively. Thus, it was established that the prices in the former markets were characterized by short memory; the effect of shock is temporary as the prices return to the attractor level within a short period. However, bad news on the prices of the latter markets has pronounced effect and takes a longer period for the price series to normalize. On the other hand, French and Chinese market price series exhibited an explosive pattern; the price series have infinite memory and the effect of innovation is permanent as price series will not normalize. Therefore, it can be concluded that the future trade of wheat is useful in the market given the persistence behavior of the prices as their price trends are tailored towards a rational expectation rather than a naïve expectation. However, for the market prices that are explosive, the market participants should focus on rational market expectation as a trade barometer.

This research was conducted in the Application and Research Center of Faculty of Agriculture, Uludag University, in a Randomized Split Blocks Design with three replications in 2020-2021 growing season. In the experiment, 3 different seed rates (300 seed m-2, 500 seed m-2 and 700 seed m-2) and 4 different nitrogen doses (0 kg, 8 kg, 16 kg, 24 kg per decare) were applied. The effects of these factors on grain yield, some yield components and quality characteristics of Nusrat bread wheat cultivar were determined. Increases in seed rates had statistically significant effects on the number of seeds/spike, seed weight/spike, seed yield and sedimentation value averages. There was no statistically significant effect on the averages of thousand grain weight, the rate of protein and gluten. Seed yield was taken at the highest value from 700 seed m-2. It was determined that the applied nitrogen dose increased up to 16 kg da-1, increasing the number of grains/spike, grain weight/spike, thousand grain weight and yield per unit area. As a result of the research; It can be said that the optimum seed rate and nitrogen fertilizer amount should be 700 seed m-2 and 16 kg da-1, respectively, in order to get the highest grain yield in Nusrat bread wheat cultivar in Bursa conditions., Bu araştırma 2020-2021 yetiştirme mevsiminde Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, Ziraat Fakültesi, Araştırma veUygulama Merkezinde yürütülmüştür. Denemede, 3 farklı ekim sıklığı (300 adet m-2, 500 adet m-2 ve 700 adet m-2) ile 4 değişik azot dozu (dekara 0 kg, 8 kg, 16 kg, 24 kg) uygulamıştır. Tohumun bin tanesinin ağırlığı, protein oranı ve glüten oranı ortalamaları üzerine istatistiki anlamda etkisi olmamıştır. Tane verimi 700 adet m-2 ekim sıklığından en yüksek değerde alınmıştır. Uygulanan azot dozunun 16 kg da-1 kadar artmasıyla tane sayısı/başak, tane ağırlığı/başak, bin tane ağırlığı ve birim alan veriminin arttığı saptanmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucuna göre; Bursa şartlarında Nusrat ekmeklik buğday çeşidinde en yüksek tane verimini alabilmek için metrekareye uygulanması gereken en uygun ekim sıklığının ve azotlu gübre miktarının sırasıyla 700 adet m-2 ve dekara 16 kg olduğu tespit edilmiştir.

Triticale (×Triticosecale Wittmack), an intergeneric hybrid of wheat (Triticum spp.) and rye (Secale cereale), was introduced to Ethiopia in 1970 (Pinto 1974), while improved varieties of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and wheat were introduced in the 2000s. This paper explores the uses people have assigned to barley, wheat, and triticale in the current food culture in southern Ethiopia. The aim of this study is to analyze the factors that have contributed to the continued cultivation of barley and wheat landraces after the introduction of triticale. Barley, wheat, and triticale play an essential role as ingredients in daily meals as well as in feast meals. Two landraces of barley and one landrace of tetraploid wheat are currently grown in the area of study. Local people highly valued these landraces for their taste, market value, and short cultivation period. They have sustained the diverse food culture that existed before the introduction of triticale, despite changes in the frequency of meals and combination of ingredients. The continued cultivation and preference of landraces can be understood in terms of a combination of cultural, ecological, and economic conditions.

The main aim of this study was to compare mineral and protein contents of modern and old bread wheat varieties and Anatolian landraces to determine whether there have been important alterations in properties examined in around one century (since the 1930s). Mineral bioavailabilities of whole wheat breads of these wheats were also compared. The einkorn sample (landrace: Siyez) had the highest protein content (16.8%) in Ankara location among all modern and old wheats and landraces. The highest mineral contents were generally determined in landraces among all genotypes grown in Ankara location. The landraces had higher mean grain Ca, K, Mg, Mn, P, and Zn concentrations (mg.kg(-1)) than the modern wheat varieties. Karakilcik (landrace) had the highest Ca (1248), Cu (5.62), Fe (44.48), K (4826), Mg (1531), and P (4685) concentrations (mg.kg(-1)). Siyez (landrace) had the highest Cu (5.68), while Sunter (landrace) had the highest K (4950) and Zn (33.59) concentrations (mg.kg(-1)). Old wheat varieties had the highest Ca, Fe, and Mn bioavailabilities (in vitro), while modern wheat varieties had the highest Cu and S bioavailabilities in their whole wheat breads. New production from public and exclusive varieties released by the small grains breeding program at Virginia Tech generated cumulative discounted benefits of $41 million from 2000 to 2018. Fitted yields from field trials were combined with acreage estimates to generate weighted average yields based on adoption of new varieties. Benefits were estimated as the value of additional production from the release and adoption of improved varieties. Public varieties were responsible for most program benefits. The program was found to have a significant impact in Virginia and out-of-state, with much of these benefits due to public-private collaboration. The goal of the study was to determine whether the heterotic influence and phenotypic link between a numbers of yield variables in F1 hexaploid wheat hybrids could be controlled (Triticum aestivum L.). Our research trail was held at the Botanical Garden of Sindh Agricultural University's Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics in Tandojam, Pakistan. Six parental varieties (Sunhri, PBGST2, Sarsabz, TD1, TJ83, and Moomal) and nine F1 hybrids (TJ83 x TD1, PBGST2 x TD1, TJ83 x Moomal, TD1 x Moomal, TD1 x Sarsabz, Sarsabz x Sunhri, and TJ83) were supplied with material seed by the Department of Plant Breeding. After eight characters were evaluated, the experimental fields were selected and put into a randomised complete block design with four repetitions. The hybrids differed considerably (P 0.01) for every trait examined with the exception of plant height and maturity up to 75% of the time, whereas the parents showed no differences in grain yield. There was significant heterosis in the F1 hybrids, as seen by the mean square of the parent and the hybrid. Overall, maturity was important up to 75% of the time, even if it was negatively correlated with the majority of production metrics, meaning that genotypes with early maturation produced lower yields. The spikelets spike-1, seed index, and harvest index in plant-1 were all adversely connected with plant height, however grain yield was significantly and favourably correlated with all yield indices. These findings showed that choosing plants that produce more grain could be based on one or more yield components.

Aims Root tissue water can be lost to the dry topsoil via radial water loss (RWL) resulting in root shrinking and loss of contact with the rhizosphere. The root barrier to radial oxygen loss (ROL) has been shown to restrict RWL, therefore we hypothesized that the inducible barrier can be formed as a response to low soil water potential and play a role, together with other root traits, in restricting RWL. Methods Rice and wheat were grown in hydroponics with contrasting water potential to diagnose ROL barrier formation and to explore how key root traits (ROL barrier, root diameter, root porosity) affect RWL. Moreover, we developed a numerical model predicting RWL as a function of root diameter, root porosity and presence of a barrier to ROL. Results Methylene blue staining showed that low water potential induced a ROL barrier formation in roots of rice, and also resulted in an apoplastic barrier, as identified by the apoplastic tracer periodic acid. The barrier significantly restricted RWL, but root diameter and tissue porosity also influenced RWL. Our numerical model was able to reflect the empirical data and clearly demonstrated that thick roots and a barrier to ROL restricts RWL while cortical porosity accelerates RWL. Conclusions Our modelling approach highlighted that increase in root tissue porosity, a common response to drought, conserves water when new roots are formed, but the higher desiccation risk related to high-porosity roots can be effectively counteracted by forming thick roots or even better, by a barrier to ROL.

Alien chromatin (introgressions) can be incorporated into the wheat genome either through recombination or through translocation. Lines of introgressive origin may not contain identified alien chromatin, although they appear to be changed relative to the original wheat sample by some characteristics that are registered at different levels of phenotype assessment. It has been shown numerous facts of the variability of the recipient genome of hybrid origin. They can be caused by irregular behavior of chromosomes in mitoses of somatic cells with hybrid genome, and DNA changes. Wide phenotypic variability was observed among the progeny of hybrid genomes up to appearance of phenotypic novelties. The study of DNA profiles using several methods revealed the presence of numerous genetic and epigenetic changes, including deletions, changes in gene expression, changes in the methylation pattern, and activation of retrotransposons in the recipient genome. When these changes were not directly related to alien fragments, they are considered as possible mechanisms of extension of genetic variability intra genome of hybrid origin. Transcriptomic analysis of lines of hybrid origin and parental plants using the RNA-seq analyses showed that the change of expression affected a different number of genes. The change in the expression of alien genes occurred in the direction of down-regulation, upregulation was typical for wheat genes. Phenotypic variability during introgressive hybridization can be accompanied by attenuation of the expression of an alien gene when it enters the recipient genome. That may be a consequence of the interaction between the alien gene and the genetic environment of the host genome. Today there is a lot of evidence that these mechanisms are epigenetic, which include DNA methylation, histone modification, the involvement of small RNAs in the regulation of gene expression, and the involvement of transposons. Moreover, none of these mechanisms act independently, but are a component of events, the results of which can be a change in gene expression and the appearance of a new phenotype that is not related to the expression of an alien gene., У статті розглянуто питання, пов’язані з розширенням генотипної та фенотипної мінливості в нащадків рослин з геномом гібридного походження. Інтрогресивними завжди вважались лінії, геном яких містить чужинний хроматин унаслідок рекомбінаційних чи транслокаційних подій після віддаленого схрещування. Не завжди в таких лініях можна детектувати чужинний хроматин, хоча лінії в поколіннях демонструють ознаки, що відрізняють їх від нативних рослин з реципієнтним геномом. Така фенотипна мінливість може бути спричинена як порушеннями в поведінці хромосом у гібридному геномі, так і змінами у ДНК. Широта фенотипної мінливості може виявлятися в появі ознак, які є новітніми щодо фенотипних характеристик компонентів ініціального схрещування. Вивчення ДНК-профілів свідчить про наявність у геномах гібридного походження як генетичних, так і епігенетичних змін, включно з делецією/інсерцією, змінами в експресії генів, картинах ДНК-метилування, активацією ретротранспозонів у реципієнтному геномі. Транскрипційний аналіз показав, що зміна експресії стосується різної кількості генів. Водночас експресії чужинних генів зазвичай властиво зниження активності, тоді як пшеничних – здебільшого підвищення транскрипційної активності. У разі інтрогресивної гібридизації характерним є затухання експресії чужинного гена в поколіннях. Це може бути наслідком взаємодії між чужинним геном і генетичним оточенням хазяйського геному. Накопичено багато доказів того, що зміни в експресії гена, зокрема його затухання, контролюються на епігенетичному рівні. Інтрогресивну гібридизацію з часу її виникнення розглядали як засіб генетичного поліпшення генетичного пулу рослин, що культивуються. Таке поліпшення вважали результатом перенесення чужинного гена(ів) до реципієнтного геному. На сьогодні стає зрозуміло, що роль інтрогресивної гібридизації, можливо, головна, полягає в тому, що вона є промотором генетичних та/або епігенетичних змін у реципієнтному геномі, продукті інтрогресивної гібридизації. Можливо, саме з цим пов’язане відновлення інтересу до інтрогресивної гібридизації та її впливу на геном рослин, який спостерігається останніми роками.

The effect of calcium silicate, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and their mixture on the adaptation of wheat and corn to simulated acid rain has been evaluated in the pot experiments. Acid rain was simulated by watering twice with distilled water acidified with sulfuric acid to pH = 2. Test plants were grown in a plant growth chamber under controlled conditions of temperature, illumination and relative humidity for 18 days. The physiological state of the test plants was assessed by characteristics of growth (shoot height, root length, dry weight of shoots and roots), the content of photosynthetic pigments, flavonoids, and proline in leaves. For the corn, the content of anthocyanins in shoots and roots was also evaluated. In parallel, the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil (pH, electrical conductivity, redox potential, content of soluble carbonates, and nitrates) were determined. It was established that simulated acid rain inhibited the growth and accumulation of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves of wheat and corn. The content of protective metabolites (proline, flavonoids, and anthocyanins) increased. Wheat showed greater sensitivity to the inhibiting effect of acidification compared to corn. The application of CaSiO3 was more effective than GABA in restoring pH value and HCO3- concentration in soil, while the application of GABA more effectively promoted the accumulation of NO3- anions in soil. Combining CaSiO3 with GABA was the most effective in restoring soil physical and chemical properties altered by simulated acidification and stimulating the growth and photosynthesis in the test-plants. Thus, the mixture of CaSiO3 with GABA is promising for further studies of the possibility of its application to mitigate the negative impact of acid depositions on vegetation and soil.

Climate change poses complex impacts on the global wheat supply and demand chain. The impacts of climate change on average wheat yields are reasonably well studied, but its effects on yield variability and the associated economic consequences are poorly understood. Here, we show that future global wheat prices will exhibit steeper spikes at 2°C global warming (6.2% increase in the 95th percentile of global consumer price anomalies) despite a 1.7% increase in production given that CO2 fertilization benefits crops. Such economic stresses could be abated by trade liberalization with lower prices. However, on the supply side, trade liberalization has contrasting effects: the profitability of farmers in advanced economies can be maintained or even raised, but this will inevitably cause economic losses and inequalities for farmers in less-developed, wheat-importing countries. Agricultural trade liberalization accompanied by protection policies in developing countries would be beneficial for global food security in the threat of climate change.

16th Century was the period in which the significant event and changes took place in the Ottoman Empire. These developments, such as military movements, population growth, little ice age, and their effects were evaluated in some researches. However, very little has been said about the direct or indirect impact of all these factors on agricultural production, leaving gaps or not saying anything about the role of the little ice age. In this article, the question of how Ottoman agricultural production was influenced by these developments has been examined. The shift at the production of the wheat, that was the basic nutritional source, and the barley, which was one of the most significant nutrients for the animal used as a mount or draught, was based on. Comparing the production of wheat and barley in the first and second half of the 16th century and evaluating the result showed the role of these effects. Therefore, the wheat and the barley production were independent of each other as regards to their output was concerned, while, in most case, wheat was lost its cultivation area the output of barley increased, depends on the region they cultivated., 16. yüzyıl Osmanlı Devleti’nde çok önemli değişim ve büyük olayların yaşandığı bir dönemdir. Askeri hareketler, nüfus artışı, küçük buzul çağı vb. gelişmeler üzerine bazı çalışmalar yapılmış, etkileri değerlendirilmiştir. Ancak tüm bu faktörlerin zirai üretime doğrudan ya da dolaylı etkisi konusunda ya çok az şey söylenerek boşluklar bırakılmış ya da küçük buzul çağının rolünde olduğu gibi hiçbir şey söylenmemiştir. Bu çalışmada Osmanlı tarımsal üretiminin bu gelişmelerden etkileniş biçimi incelenmektedir. Halkın temel besin kaynağı olan buğday ve binek ile iş hayvanları için birincil derecede önemli besin kaynağı olan arpa üretimindeki değişim temel alınmıştır. Buğday ve arpanın 16. yüzyılın ilk yarısı ile ikinci yarısındaki üretimlerinin kıyaslanması ve sonucun değerlendirilmesi bu etkilerin rolünü açığa çıkarmaktadır. Sonuçta üretim miktarı özelinde buğday ve arpa üretimi birbirinden bağımsızdır ve birçok durumda, ekim alanına bağlı olarak, buğday alan kaybederken arpa üretimi artmaktadır.

In Ethiopia harvesting of cereal crops is one of the major attentive agricultural operations in agriculture production, which demands considerable amount of labours. The availability and cost of labour during wheat crop harvesting season are serious problems. It is therefore, essential to adopt the mechanical methods so that the timeliness in harvesting operation could be ensured and field losses are minimized to increase production on the farm. The objective of this study was to evaluate the field performance of self-propelled reaper-binder at farmer’s field. The effective field capacity of the reaper binder was found as 0.108 ha h-1 with a field efficiency of 84.65 per cent at operating speed of 2.55 km h-1. The fuel consumption was observed as 10.66 l ha-1. The total grain losses in reaper binder harvesting were 2.02% as compared to 3.30% with manual harvesting. The cost of harvesting with reaper binder and manual harvesting were 1,391.18 birr/ha and 2850birr per hectare. The harvesting cost of reaper binder was reduced by 48.82% compared to manual harvesting method with sickle.

Research on wheat grain proteins is reviewed, including achievements over the past century and priorities for future research. The focus is on three groups of proteins that have major impacts on wheat quality and utilization: the gluten proteins which determine dough viscoelasticity but also trigger celiac disease in susceptible individuals, the puroindolines which are major determinants of grain texture and the amylase/ trypsin inhibitors which are food and respiratory allergens and are implicated in triggering celiac disease and nonceliac wheat sensitivity.

Background Among the weeds in Iran, resistant Lolium rigidum Gaud is considered a troublesome weed in winter cereals due to its tendency to evolve cross (CR) and multiple resistance (MR) to herbicides. Objective This research examined the patterns and mechanisms of L. rigidum resistance to clodinafop-propargyl (CP) and mesosulfuron methyl+iodosulfuron methyl (MI). Methods Experiments were conducted on four putative-resistant L. rigidum biotypes and one susceptible biotype. The dose-response assay was performed on the biotypes with CP and MI. CR and MR were investigated with haloxyfop-R-methyl (HRM), sethoxydim (SD), pinoxaden (PN). and isoproturon+ diflufenican (ID) herbicides. An indirect study of the metabolism of herbicides was carried out using the cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (CYP450) inhibitors 1-aminobenzotriazole (ABT), piperonyl butoxide (PBO) and malathion. Finally, sequencing of ALS and ACCase genes was performed to investigate target-site resistance. Results All putative-resistant L. rigidum biotypes were resistant to CP, MI, and HRM, but susceptible to SD, PN, and ID. The indirect study showed that the P450 enzyme had no role in the evolution of resistance in L. rigidum biotypes. Resistance in this species was due to Ile-1781-Leu and Pro-197-Ser substitutions on ACCase and ALS encoding genes led to resistance, respectively. Conclusions Resistance in the studied L. rigidum biotypes to ALS and ACCase inhibiting was due of target site resistance. If these resistant biotypes are not controlled, they will become a problem for farmers in the region.

Hole sowing is a new and efficient cultivation method with few studies. This study investigated the effects of different sowing densities and nitrogen topdressing at the jointing stage on dry matter, quality, and yield under wheat hole sowing to provide a theoretical basis for integrating wheat fertilizer and density-supporting technology. In this study, a two-factor split-plot design was used. The sowing density was the main plot, and four levels were set: D1, D2, D3, and D4 (238, 327, 386, and 386 suitable seeds·m−2). The four sowing levels were sown according to 8 grains/hole, 11 grains/hole, 13 grains/hole, and 16 grains/hole, respectively, with a row spacing of 25 cm and a hole spacing of 13.5 cm; the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied at the jointing stage was the sub-area, with four levels: N1, N2, N3, and N4 (0, 60, 120, and 180 kg·ha−1). After two years of experimental research, the following main conclusions are drawn: the use of high sowing density and nitrogen topdressing is helpful to improve the dry matter quality of wheat spikes at the maturing stage; the sowing density had significant or highly significant effects on protein content, starch content, and sedimentation value. The yield from 2018–2019 reached a maximum of 8448.67 kg·ha−1 under D4N4 treatment, and the yield from 2019–2020 reached a maximum of 10,136.40 kg·ha−1 under D4N3 treatment. Therefore, the combination of 225 kg·ha−1 sowing density and 120–180 kg·ha−1 nitrogen topdressing at the jointing stage can be used in field production, which can help improve wheat production potential. Similarly, understanding the interaction between wheat hole sowing and different sowing densities and nitrogen topdressing amounts provides a practical reference for high-yield wheat cultivation techniques.

(1) Background: Increasing salinity, further potentiated by climate change and soil degradation, will jeopardize food security even more. Therefore, there is an urgent need for sustainable agricultural practices capable of maintaining high crop yields despite adverse conditions. Here, we tested if wheat, a salt-sensitive crop, could be a good reservoir for halotolerant bacteria with plant growth-promoting (PGP) capabilities. (2) Methods: We used two agricultural soils from Algeria, which differ in salinity but are both used to grow wheat. Soil halotolerant bacterial strains were isolated and screened for 12 PGP traits related to phytohormone production, improved nitrogen and phosphorus availability, nutrient cycling, and plant defence. The four ‘most promising’ halotolerant PGPB strains were tested hydroponically on wheat by measuring their effect on germination, survival, and biomass along a salinity gradient. (3) Results: Two halotolerant bacterial strains with PGP traits were isolated from the non-saline soil and were identified as Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens, and another two halotolerant bacterial strains with PGP traits were isolated from the saline soil and identified as B. megaterium. When grown under 250 mM of NaCl, only the inoculated wheat seedlings survived. The halotolerant bacterial strain that displayed all 12 PGP traits and promoted seed germination and plant growth the most was one of the B. megaterium strains isolated from the saline soil. Although they both belonged to the B. megaterium clade and displayed a remarkable halotolerance, the two bacterial strains isolated from the saline soil differed in two PGP traits and had different effects on plant performance, which clearly shows that PGP potential is not phylogenetically determined. (4) Conclusions: Our data highlight that salt-sensitive plants and non-saline soils can be reservoirs for halotolerant microbes with the potential to become effective and sustainable strategies to improve plant tolerance to salinity. However, these strains need to be tested under field conditions and with more crops before being considered biofertilizer candidates.

Supplemental irrigation under a ridge-furrow (RF) cropping system is a valuable cropping practice that balances resource efficiency and high crop yield. However, the effects of nitrogen management on crop growth, yield formation, and economic benefits under RF systems have not been clearly investigated. In this study, the experiment was designed with three experimental factorials, including three cropping systems (RF, RF cropping with 80 mm irrigation; TF1, traditional flat cropping with 200 mm irrigation; and TF2, traditional flat cropping with 80 mm irrigation), two nitrogen application rates (NL, 180 kg N ha−1; NH, 240 kg N ha−1), and two fertilizer application models (B, all nitrogen fertilizers were applied basally at the pre-sowing stage; BT, nitrogen fertilizer was applied at both the pre-sowing and jointing stages at a ratio of 1:1). A two-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of nitrogen fertilizer management on wheat yield, water and nitrogen utilization, and economic benefits under the RF cropping system. The results showed that the RF system significantly increased the soil moisture content and improved the water productivity (WP) and grain yield of wheat. Nitrogen reduction (NL) under the RF system did not affect the water use of the wheat compared with traditional high nitrogen application (NH) but increased the nitrogen uptake and fertilizer productivity of the wheat. Although NL led to a reduction in aboveground dry matter accumulation, it did not significantly affect the yield of wheat but increased the net income of wheat cultivation. Under NL conditions, the BT nitrogen application model promoted nitrogen uptake in wheat and ameliorated the reduction in grain protein content due to plastic film mulching, and this model is an integrated planting practice that trades off wheat yield and quality. These findings suggest that NLBT is a promising and recommendable cropping practice under RF systems considering resource utilization, high yield and quality, and economic efficiency.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays prominent multifunctional roles in the mediation of various physiological processes and stress responses to plants. In this study, hydroponic experiments were carried out to explore the effects of NaHS pretreatment on the growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under 50 μM cadmium (Cd). Compared with Cd treatment alone, 50 μM NaHS pretreatment increased the plant height, soluble sugar content of shoots and roots, and dry weight of shoots and roots under Cd stress, while the Cd concentration of shoots and roots was significantly reduced by 18.1% and 25.9%, respectively. Meanwhile, NaHS pretreatment protected the photosynthetic apparatus by increasing the net photosynthetic rate and PSII electron transportation rate of wheat leaves under Cd stress. NaHS pretreatment significantly increased the soluble sugar content to maintain the osmotic pressure balance of the leaf cells. The gene expression results associated with photosynthetic carbon assimilation and sucrose synthesis in wheat leaves suggested that the NaHS pretreatment significantly up-regulated the expression of TaRBCL, TaRBCS, and TaPRK, while it down-regulated the expression of TaFBA, TaSuSy, TaSAInv, and TaA/NInv. In summary, NaHS pretreatment improved the resistance of wheat seedlings under Cd stress by increasing the rate of photosynthesis and regulating the expression of genes related to sugar metabolism.

Drought is one of the major environmental stresses, resulting in serious yield reductions in wheat production. Silicon (Si) has been considered beneficial to enhancing wheat resistance to drought stress. However, few studies have explored the mediated effects of foliar supplementation of Si on drought stress imposed at different wheat growth stages. Therefore, a field experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of Si supplementation on the physiological and biochemical responses of wheat to drought stress imposed at the jointing (D-jointing), anthesis (D-anthesis) and filling (D-filling) stages. Our results showed that a moderate water deficit markedly decreased the dry matter accumulation, leaf relative water content (LRWC), photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Sc), transpiration rate (Tr) and antioxidant activity [peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)]. On the contrary, it remarkably increased the content of osmolytes (proline, soluble sugar, soluble protein) and lipid peroxidation. The grain yields of D-jointing, D-anthesis and D-filling treatments were 9.59%, 13.9% and 18.9% lower, respectively, compared to the control treatment (CK). However, foliar supplementation of Si at the anthesis and filling stages significantly improved plant growth under drought stress due to the increased Si content. Consequently, the improvement in antioxidant activity and soluble sugar, and the reduction in the content of ROS, increased the LRWC, chlorophyll content, Pn, Sc and Tr, and ultimately boosted wheat yield by 5.71% and 8.9%, respectively, in comparison with the non-Si-treated plants subjected to water stress at the anthesis and filling stages. However, the mitigating effect of Si application was not significant at the jointing stage. It was concluded that foliar supplementation of Si, especially at the reproductive stage, was effective in alleviating drought-induced yield reduction.

Crop varieties differ in their ability to interact with Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR), but the genetic basis for these differences is unknown. This issue was addressed with the PGPR Azospirillum baldaniorum Sp245, using 187 wheat accessions. We screened the accessions based on the seedling colonization by the PGPR and the expression of the phenylpyruvate decarboxylase gene ppdC (for synthesis of the auxin indole-3-acetic acid), using gusA fusions. Then, the effects of the PGPR on the selected accessions stimulating Sp245 (or not) were compared in soil under stress. Finally, a genome-wide association approach was implemented to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with PGPR interaction. Overall, the ancient genotypes were more effective than the modern genotypes for Azospirillum root colonization and ppdC expression. In non-sterile soil, A. baldaniorum Sp245 improved wheat performance for three of the four PGPR-stimulating genotypes and none of the four non-PGPR-stimulating genotypes. The genome-wide association did not identify any region for root colonization but revealed 22 regions spread on 11 wheat chromosomes for ppdC expression and/or ppdC induction rate. This is the first QTL study focusing on molecular interaction with PGPR bacteria. The molecular markers identified provide the possibility to improve the capacity of modern wheat genotypes to interact with Sp245, as well as, potentially, other Azospirillum strains.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most important staple crops in the world, along with maize and rice. More than 50 plant viruses are known to infect wheat worldwide. To date, there are no studies on the identification of viruses infecting wheat in Korea. Therefore, we investigated virome in wheat from three different geographical regions where wheat is mainly cultivated in Korea using Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) sequencing and Illumina sequencing. Five viral species, including those known to infect wheat, were identified using high-throughput sequencing strategies. Of these, barley virus G (BVG) and Hordeum vulgare endornavirus (HvEV) were consistently present in all libraries. Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) and wheat leaf yellowing-associated virus (WLYaV) were first identified in Korean wheat samples. The viruses identified by ONT and Illumina sequencing were compared using a heatmap. Though the ONT sequencing approach is less sensitive, the analysis results were similar to those of Illumina sequencing in our study. Both platforms served as reliable and powerful tools for detecting and identifying wheat viruses, achieving a balance between practicality and performance. The findings of this study will provide deeper insights into the wheat virosphere and further help improve disease management strategies.

Blumeria graminis forma specialis tritici (B.g. tritici) is the airborne fungal pathogen that causes powdery mildew disease on hexaploid bread wheat. Calmodulin-binding transcription activators (CAMTAs) regulate plant responses to environments, but their potential functions in the regulation of wheat–B.g. tritici interaction remain unknown. In this study, the wheat CAMTA transcription factors TaCAMTA2 and TaCAMTA3 were identified as suppressors of wheat post-penetration resistance against powdery mildew. Transient overexpression of TaCAMTA2 and TaCAMTA3 enhanced the post-penetration susceptibility of wheat to B.g. tritici, while knockdown of TaCAMTA2 and TaCAMTA3 expression using transient- or virus-induced gene silencing compromised wheat post-penetration susceptibility to B.g. tritici. In addition, TaSARD1 and TaEDS1 were characterized as positive regulators of wheat post-penetration resistance against powdery mildew. Overexpressing TaSARD1 and TaEDS1 confers wheat post-penetration resistance against B.g. tritici, while silencing TaSARD1 and TaEDS1 enhances wheat post-penetration susceptibility to B.g. tritici. Importantly, we showed that expressions of TaSARD1 and TaEDS1 were potentiated by silencing of TaCAMTA2 and TaCAMTA3. Collectively, these results implicated that the Susceptibility genes TaCAMTA2 and TaCAMTA3 contribute to the wheat–B.g. tritici compatibility might via negative regulation of TaSARD1 and TaEDS1 expression.

The waxy cuticle covers a plant’s aerial surface and contributes to environmental adaptation in land plants. Although past decades have seen great advances in understanding wax biosynthesis in model plants, the mechanisms underlying wax biosynthesis in crop plants such as bread wheat remain to be elucidated. In this study, wheat MYB transcription factor TaMYB30 was identified as a transcriptional activator positively regulating wheat wax biosynthesis. The knockdown of TaMYB30 expression using virus-induced gene silencing led to attenuated wax accumulation, increased water loss rates, and enhanced chlorophyll leaching. Furthermore, TaKCS1 and TaECR were isolated as essential components of wax biosynthetic machinery in bread wheat. In addition, silencing TaKCS1 and TaECR resulted in compromised wax biosynthesis and potentiated cuticle permeability. Importantly, we showed that TaMYB30 could directly bind to the promoter regions of TaKCS1 and TaECR genes by recognizing the MBS and Motif 1 cis-elements, and activate their expressions. These results collectively demonstrated that TaMYB30 positively regulates wheat wax biosynthesis presumably via the transcriptional activation of TaKCS1 and TaECR.

Wheat-flour crackers represent a staple snack option, although they lack nutritional value. Agricultural by-products such as olive and grape seeds, cereals such as barley and legumes such as lupine and chickpea are rich in bioactive compounds; therefore, flours obtained from those could represent a better option for bakery products fortification. The purpose of the present study was the investigation of total phenolic content and antioxidant activity before and after the baking of wheat crackers enriched with 10–30% olive seed, 10–30% grape seed, 10–40% lupine, 10–30% barley and 20–60% and 80% chickpea flours and the evaluation of the predicted bioavailability after in vitro digestion of crackers demonstrating the highest values. Crackers and doughs were processed and analyzed using Folin–Ciocâlteu and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays, respectively. Crackers with the highest properties were subjected to in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Baking resulted in an increase in total phenolics and antioxidant activity in the majority of crackers. Olive and grape seed flour crackers demonstrated the highest antioxidant properties. Following in vitro digestion, 30% olive seed flour crackers retained the majority of polyphenols and antioxidant activity. Crackers enriched with 30% olive seed flour could represent a healthy functional bakery snack regarding their increased antioxidant properties.

The wheat pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici can respond to light by modulating its gene expression. Because several virulence-related genes are differentially expressed in response to light, different wavelengths could have a crucial role in the Z. tritici–wheat interaction. To explore this opportunity, the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of blue (470 nm), red (627 nm), blue–red, and white light on the in vitro and in planta development of Z. tritici. The morphology (mycelium appearance, color) and phenotypic (mycelium growth) characteristics of a Z. tritici strain were evaluated after 14 days under the different light conditions in two independent experiments. In addition, bread wheat plants were artificially inoculated with Z. tritici and grown for 35 days under the same light treatments. The disease incidence, severity, and fungal DNA were analyzed in a single experiment. Statistical differences were determined by using an ANOVA. The obtained results showed that the different light wavelengths induced specific morphological changes in mycelial growth. The blue light significantly reduced colony growth, while the dark and red light favored fungal development (p < 0.05). The light quality also influenced host colonization, whereby the white and red light had stimulating and repressing effects, respectively (p < 0.05). This precursory study demonstrated the influence of light on Z. tritici colonization in bread wheat.

The objective of this investigation was to study the effects of different cereal types, barley and wheat, with different particle sizes (PS) on the recovery of ileal digesta and fecal excretion, digestion of nutrients and fiber components, mean transit time (MTT), and short-chain fatty acid content and composition in growing pigs studied in two experiments. Five barrows with ileal cannulas (initial BW 35.9 ± 1.5 kg) in Experiment 1 and thirty-two castrated pigs (30.8 ± 1.3 kg) in Experiment 2 were fed four different diets: barley fine, barley coarse, wheat fine and wheat coarse diets. The cereal type and PS did not influence the relative weight of the small and large intestines and pH of digesta, whereas MTT in the large intestine of pigs fed the coarse barley diet was lower compared to pigs fed other diets (p < 0.05). Pigs fed the coarse barley diet had lower apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients and fiber (p < 0.05), whereas pigs fed the fine barley diet had similar AID and ATTD to pigs fed wheat fine and coarse diets (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the barley diet was more influenced by PS in comparison to wheat, thereby inducing lower AID and ATTD of nutrient.

Phosphorus (P) management in wheat grown under saline soil conditions requires a better understanding of how P placement and salt stress affect spatial root distribution, plant agronomic performance, and nutrient utilization. A column culture experiment was conducted with two wheat genotypes, Alice and LX99, five P placements (‘Top Dressed High P’, TopHP; ‘Top Dressed Reduced P’, TopRP; ‘Deep Banded High P’, DeepHP; ‘Deep Banded Reduced P’, DeepRP; and ‘No P added’, −P), and two salt stress levels (‘salt stress’, +S; ‘non-salt stress’, −S) to investigate differences in biomass accumulation, nutrient utilization, and root distribution (0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–100 cm) among treatments. Deep P placement under non-salt stress increased root distribution at 20–40 cm soil depth for both genotypes compared to top P placement. P application under salt stress increased root weight at all three soil depths in both genotypes and P accumulation in aboveground plant parts (except for LX99 under TopRP). The highest P utilization efficiency occurred in Alice with TopRP and in LX99 with DeepRP under non-salt and salt stresses. Overall, a coordinated adaptation in allocating biomass between belowground and aboveground plant parts, along with altered nutrient utilization, was necessary to reach a growth compromise in response to P supply changes and salinity. Therefore, genotype, P placement depth, and soil salinity should be considered to improve wheat P utilization efficiency under saline conditions.
