2. Human values and ideological beliefs as predictors of attitudes towards immigrants across 20 countries: The country-level moderating role of threat

Abstract

Immigration is a worldwide subject of interest, and studies about attitudes towards immigrants have been frequent due to immigration crises in different locations across the globe. We aimed at understanding individual-level effects of human values and ideological beliefs (Right-Wing Authoritarianism – RWA, and Social Dominance Orientation – SDO) on attitudes towards immigrants, and whether country-level variables (perception of Islamic Fundamentalism as a threat, perception of immigrants as a threat, and international migrant stock) moderate these relations. With representative samples from 20 countries (N = 21,362) (the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania), and using Multilevel Bayesian regressions, results showed the negative effect of RWA, SDO, and existence values on attitudes towards immigrants, and the positive effects of suprapersonal and interactive values. Cross-level interactions indicated that the effects of RWA, SDO and suprapersonal and existence values were intensified in countries with societally high levels of perceiving Islamic fundamentalism as a threat. International migrant stock served as a country-level moderator for the effects of SDO and RWA only. When country-level moderators were included simultaneously, Islamic fundamentalism as a threat was the most consistent moderator. Framing theory is offered as a plausible explanation of these results.

Abstract

© The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited 2021, corrected publication 2022, The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. Abstract

Perfectionism can be understood as a personality trait that establishes excessively high standards for the performance of individuals and ostensibly critical self-evaluations. It is associated with a range of variables, such as anxiety, suicidal tendencies, depression, and low satisfaction with life. Rice et al. (2014) proposed the Short Almost Perfect Scale (SAPS), which overcame some limitations of previous measures (e.g., ambiguity, non-necessary factors). In the present research, we provide psychometric evidence of the SAPS in Brazil. The original two-factor structure was replicated. The items showed good discrimination, level of difficulty, and informativeness for the overall measure. The SAPS also presented acceptable reliability levels, and full measurement invariance across participants' gender, and partial invariance across countries (Brazil and USA). Finally, perfectionism was meaningfully associated with personality traits and human values. In sum, our findings suggest that the SAPS is psychometrically adequate for further use in Brazil.

Resumo As teorias da conspiração podem ser conceituadas como crenças que servem para explicar comportamentos e ações de grupos ou organizações secretas. O presente estudo buscou investigar a relação entre valores e teorias da conspiração. Contou-se com a participação de 205 estudantes universitários (Midade = 21.7; 56.6% do sexo feminino), os quais responderam a Escala de Crenças Gerais Conspiratórias, o Questionário dos Valores Básicos e perguntas demográficas. Os resultados indicaram que tais crenças estão associadas, principalmente, com os valores humanitários como representados por aqueles de experimentação, suprapessoais e interativos, mas também com os valores de realização. Concluiu-se que os valores podem ser uma variável importante para explicar o endosso á crenças em teorias da conspiração, sobretudo valores que promovem maior abertura à mudança e justiça social, não se limitando a fontes e explicações convencionais de fatos complexos. Finalmente, limitações e potenciais aplicações são discutidas. 10. Escala de Afectos Positivos y Negativos (EAPN-10): Evidencias de su Adecuación Psicométrica

Abstract

This study aimed to gather psychometric evidence of the Scale of Positive and Negative Affects (EAPN-10) within the Brazilian context. Three studies were performed (N = 911). Study 1 considered 296 undergraduate students (MAge = 23.8; 59.1% females), who answered the EAPN-10 and a demographic questionnaire. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure [positive affects (α = .82) and negative affects (α = .81)], explaining 59.7% of the total variance. Study 2 took into account the participation of 313 undergraduate students (MAge = 23.3; 57.2% females), who answered the same instruments. Confirmatory factor analysis corroborated the two-factor structure (e.g., CFI = .92), which was invariant across males and females (e.g., ΔCFI < .01), with alphas greater than .70. Finally, Study 3's participants were 302 university students (MAge = 23.1; 54.3% females), who answered the aforementioned instruments as well as measures of vitality, positivity, optimism, anxiety, depression and stress. Supporting their criterion validity, positive affects (α = .83) were positively correlated with well-being indicators, and negative affects (α = .80) were positively correlated with indicators of psychological discomfort. In conclusion, the EAPN-10 is a psychometrically adequate measure that can be employed to assess people's affects and their correlates within the Brazilian context. Indivíduos que vivenciam um estado de solidão podem sentir uma incompletude em suas necessidades de pertença, acarretando um estado de privação social que pode afetar o seu bem-estar. Para melhor entendimento, três estudos (N = 939) objetivaram adaptar a versão reduzida da Escala de Solidão de De Jong Gierveld para o Brasil. Nos estudos 1 e 2, análises exploratória e confirmatória corroboraram a estrutura esperada de dois fatores correlacionados: emocional e social. Também se observaram evidências de validade convergente e invariância fatorial entre os gêneros. O estudo 3 avaliou as propriedades psicométricas da medida por meio da Teoria de Resposta ao Item (TRI) e indicou que os itens da escala apresentam níveis de dificuldade satisfatórios, discriminam participantes com níveis próximos de aptidão/endosso e sugerem que os fatores encontrados apresentam informações substanciais para uma larga porção do traço latente. Conclui-se que a medida é psicometricamente adequada para utilização no Brasil. Los individuos que experimentan un estado de soledad pueden sentir que sus necesidades de pertenencia se encuentran incompletas, sufriendo un estado de privación social que puede afectar su bienestar. Para una mejor comprensión del tema, fueron realizados tres estudios (N = 939) que tuvieron como objetivo adaptar la versión reducida de la Escala de Soledad de De Jong Gierveld al contexto brasileño. En los Estudios 1 y 2, los análisis exploratorio y confirmatorio corroboraron la estructura esperada de los factores emocional y social, relacionados entre sí. También fueron observadas pruebas de validez convergente y conservación factorial entre géneros. El Estudio 3 evaluó las propiedades psicométricas de la medida mediante la Teoría de Respuesta al Ítem (TRI) e indicó que los ítems de la escala presentan niveles satisfactorios de dificultad y discriminan participantes con niveles similares de aptitud/aprobación. Además, sugieren que los factores determinados contienen información significativa para una gran parte del rasgo latente. Se concluye que la medida es psicométricamente adecuada para su uso en Brasil. Individuals who experience a state of loneliness may feel that their needs of belonging are unfulfilled, suffering a state of social deprivation that might affect their well-being. For a better understanding, three studies (N = 939) aimed to adapt the short version of the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale to Brazil. In Studies 1 and 2, exploratory and confirmatory analyses corroborated the expected two correlated factors structure: emotional and social. Evidences of convergent validity and factorial invariance between genders were also observed. Study 3 verified the instrument’s psychometric properties through Item Response Theory (IRT) and the results showed that the items presented acceptable levels of difficulty, discriminated participants with similar levels of aptitude/endorsement and indicated that both factors of the measure presented substantial information for a wide range of the latent trait. We conclude that this measure is psychometrically suitable for use in Brazil.

Este artigo objetivou reunir evidências de validade e precisão da Connectedness to Nature Scale no contexto brasileiro. Dois estudos foram realizados. No Estudo 1, participaram 204 pessoas com idade média de 33 anos (Desvio-Padrão = 13,83), as quais responderam a referida escala e perguntas demográficas. Os resultados de uma análise de componentes principais indicaram uma estrutura unifatorial (a = 0,81). No Estudo 2, participaram 220 estudantes universitários com idade média de 23 anos (Desvio-Padrão = 5,82), os quais responderam a escala adaptada e perguntas demográficas. Uma análise fatorial confirmatória (estimador ML) confirmou a adequação da estrutura unifatorial (e.g., Comparative Fit Index = 0,91, Root-Mean-Square Error of Approximation = 0,064), obtendo consistência interna satisfatória (a = 0,83). Concluindo, a Connectedness to Nature Scale mostrou ser uma medida psicometricamente adequada para avaliar um fator geral de conexão com a natureza, podendo ser empregada em estudos futuros. This article aimed to gather evidence of validity and reliability of the Connectedness to Nature Scale in Brazil. Two studies were conducted. A total of 204 people of mean age 33 years (Standard Deviation = 13.83) participated in Study 1 and responded to the demographic questions and Connectedness to Nature Scale items. The results of the principal component analysis showed a one-factor structure (a = 0.81). Two hundred and twenty undergraduate students of mean age 23 years (Standard Deviation = 5.82) participated in Study 2 and responded to demographic questions; an adapted version of the Connectedness to Nature Scale was used. Confirmatory factor analysis (ML estimation) confirmed the adequacy of the one-factor structure (Comparative Fit Index = 0.91, Root-Mean-Square Error of Approximation = 0.064), indicating satisfactory internal consistency (a = 0.83). In conclusion, the Connectedness to Nature Scale proved to be a psychometrically appropriate measure to assess general connectedness to nature, and it can therefore be used in future studies.

The dataset allows a cross-cultural study of psychological and behavioural responses to the Coronavirus pandemic and associated government measures like cancellation of public functions and stay at home orders implemented in many countries. The dataset contains demographic background variables as well as measures of Asian Disease Problem, perceived stress (PSS-10), availability of social provisions (SPS-10), trust in various authorities, trust in governmental measures to contain the virus (OECD trust), personality traits (BFF-15), information behaviours, agreement with the level of government intervention, and compliance with preventive measures, along with a rich pool of exploratory variables and written experiences. A global consortium from 39 countries and regions worked together to build and translate a survey with variables of shared interests, and recruited participants in 47 languages and dialects. Raw plus cleaned data and dynamic visualizations are available.
