Does the way a word is written influence its spoken production? Previous studies suggest that orthography is involved only when the orthographic representation is highly relevant during speaking (e.g., in reading-aloud tasks). To address this issue, we carried out two experiments using the blocked cyclic picture-naming paradigm. In both experiments, participants were asked to name pictures repeatedly in orthographically homogeneous or heterogeneous blocks. In the naming task, the written form was not shown; however, the radical of the first character overlapped between the four pictures in this block type. A facilitative orthographic effect was found when picture names shared part of their written forms, compared with the heterogeneous condition. This facilitative effect was independent of the position of orthographic overlap (i.e., the left, the lower, or the outer part of the character). These findings strongly suggest that orthography can influence speaking even when it is not highly relevant (i.e., during picture naming) and the orthographic effect is less likely to be attributed to strategic preparation.

In Noord-Brabant worden de ecologische doelen voor de beekmacrofauna vaak niet gehaald. Om de oorzaken hiervan te identificeren, is onderzocht welke kenmerkende soorten voor langzaam stromende laaglandbeken er in het gebied voorkomen en welke verdwenen of nooit aangetroffen zijn. Er is bekeken welke eisen deze soorten stellen aan hun milieu en er is een inschatting gemaakt van de knelpunten voor deze soorten. Een belangrijk knelpunt was een te hoge organische belasting, maar in de bovenlopen speelde ook een typologisch probleem; trajecten met een van nature beperkt verhang werden steevast slecht gewaardeerd.

The present paper looks at semantic interference and gender congruency effects during bilingual picture-word naming. According to Costa, Miozzo & Caramazza (1999), only the activation from lexical nodes within a language is considered during lexical selection. If this is accurate, these findings should uphold with respect to semantic and gender/determiner effects even though the distractors are in another language. In the present study three effects were found, (1) a main effect of language, (2) semantic effects for both target language and non-target language distractors, and (3) gender congruency effects for targets with target-language distractors only. These findings are at odds with the language-specific proposal of Costa et al. (1999). Implications of these findings are discussed.

This thesis investigates the processing of words written in Japanese kanji and Chinese hànzì, i.e. logographic scripts. Special attention is given to the fact that the majority of Japanese kanji have multiple pronunciations (generally depending on the combination a kanji forms with other characters). First, using masked priming, it is established that upon presentation of a Japanese kanji multiple pronunciations are activated. In subsequent experiments using word naming with context pictures it is concluded that both Chinese hànzì and Japanese kanji are read out loud via a direct route from orthography to phonology. However, only Japanese kanji become susceptible to semantic or phonological context effects as a result of a cost due to the processing of multiple pronunciations. Finally, zooming in on the size of the articulatory planning unit in Japanese it is concluded that the mora as a phonological unit best complies with the observed data pattern and not the phoneme or the syllable.

Bij de uitwerking van de instandhoudingdoelen voor Natura2000 zijn beekdalen onderkend als belangrijke gebieden voor herstel van het habitattype H7140 Overgang- en Trilvenen. Dit roept vragen op over het beheer van vernatte beekdalvenen. Traditioneel worden deze beekdalgebieden gemaaid en door technische innovaties in het beheer kunnen terreinbeheerders nu met rupsmaaiers zeer natte beekdalgebieden blijven maaien. Echter, het is onduidelijk of onder de verbeterde hydrologische condities maaibeheer nog noodzakelijk dan wel wenselijk is, aangezien onder natuurlijke condities het habitattype langdurig kan voortbestaan zonder maaibeheer

This thesis tapped into the details of speech production in Mandarin Chinese in the framework of current psycholinguistic models of speech production. The findings in this thesis not only contribute to the understanding of the underlying neuropsychological mechanisms of speech production in Mandarin Chinese, but also provides insights into the understanding of the accountability of current models of speech production that are mostly based on evidence from West Germanic languages.
