Per beveik tris dešimtmečius nuo nepriklausomybės atgavimo Lietuvos teatras patyrė tokius pat pokyčius, kokius per šį laiką išgyveno Lietuvos kultūra ir visuomenė. Ypač pastarąjį dešimtmetį teatras virto aktyviu sociokultūrinio lauko dalyviu ir vis dažniau kelia probleminius atminties, tapatybės, politinio ir socialinio angažuotumo klausimus, jiems pasitelkia drąsesnes raiškos formas bei priemones. Svarbus ne tik tokių formų, pvz., dokumentinio ar politinio teatro, bet ir iki šiol ignoruotų temų, pvz., emigracijos ir imigracijos, lyčių nelygybės, socialinės diskriminacijos, centro ir periferijos skirties, religinės, etninės ir europinės tapatybės sankirtų, atsiradimas. Šios transformacijos, suponuotos pasikeitusios geopolitinės Lietuvos situacijos ir kartų kaitos, atspindi naujus meninius ir socialinius iššūkius ir ragina į teatro lauką žvelgti per postkolonializmo (teorijos) prizmę. Tai yra skatina apčiuopti ir įvardyti tokius nusistovėjusius ar naujai atsiradusius teatrinio mąstymo, raiškos ir kalbos elementus, kurie liudija ir sovietinės praeities, ir europinės / globalios integracijos refleksiją. Vis dėlto postkolonijinė prieiga paranki ne vien analizuojant sovietinį ir postsovietinį Lietuvos teatro būvį. Postkolonializmo konceptai gali būti taikomi ir tiems laikotarpiams, kai Lietuva priklausė Rusijos imperijai ar kūrė tautinę valstybę. Tiek XIX a. pabaigos lietuviškų vakarų fenomenas, tiek XX a. 3-iojo dešimtmečio lietuvių tautinio / nacionalinio teatro idėja yra persmelkti kolonijinio / imperinio ir postkolonijinio / postimperinio diskursų, kurie sugulė ir į realistinės, ir romantizuotos istorinės dramaturgijos naratyvus, sukibirkščiavo ne tik estetiniais, bet ir etniniais konfliktais. Kadangi Lietuvos teatro istorija iki šiol nebuvo tyrinėta iš postkolonijinės perspektyvos, straipsnyje apžvelgiamos tokios prieigos galimybės, iš naujo įvertinamos svarbiausios nacionalinio / tautinio teatro kūrimo aplinkybės. In the development of Lithuanian theatre, we find a number of facts and phenomena that can only be understood from a post-colonial perspective. Especially during the first independence, Soviet and even early post-Soviet periods, the discourse of theatre history and criticism felt a constant friction between “alien” and “own” aesthetic and ideological doctrines, between cosmopolitan and national [theatre] narratives. In this article, the origins of the national theatre are associated with the movement of national liberation from the Russian Empire at the end of the 19th century and the movement of amateur theatre (the Lithuanian evenings) as a process of ethnic, linguistic and cultural decolonization. Amateur theatre movement united cultural and secular intelligentsia and strengthened its role in shaping the idea of historical, cultural and linguistic identity, later realized in the national theatre model. However, the National/State Theatre, established in 1920/1922 as a representative institution of the statehood and cultural identity of independent Lithuania, seemed to be “stuck” from different cultural influences, schools, aesthetic currents and spoke badly Lithuanian. Sporadically created by amateurs and more or less professional artists who left Russian theatrical schools, the national Lithuanian theatre has formed from the beginning as a complex body combining imperial and popular models. Imperial – because with the experience and impressions of such theatre and with such understanding of its social and artistic value, its future directors returned to Lithuania from Moscow and St. Petersburg, and popular, democratic – because intended for various social and ethnic groups, but speaking Lithuanian, it had to develop both aesthetic and patriotic feelings of its audience. The politicization of the State Theatre as a representative institution (especially after the introduction of the authoritarian Antanas Smetona power in 1926 and the influence of the Nationalist Party in all areas of culture) influenced the “crucial collision” of these two models in both the performances and their public/ critical reception. At the same time, these two models and their friction can be understood as one of the specific features of the young Lithuanian national/nationhood theatre: the stage reflected a long, but unrealized, acculturation and assimilation of the nation, while the often infertile search for national scenic expression reflected not only an attempt to liberate from the colonial/imperial past, but also the complexity and contradiction of this process.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiamas Balio Sruogos požiūris į Valstybės teatro operos pastatymus ir solisto Kipro Petrausko kurtą Lohengriną spektaklyje „Lohengrinas“ (rež. Nikolajus Vekovas, 1926). Remdamasis Petrausko traktuote, Sruoga įvardija tautinės / lietuviškos sceninės raiškos ypatumus, akcentuoja Lohengrino „liaudišką vaizdavimą“, tačiau platesnio šio paveikslo atsiradimo konteksto neanalizuoja. Pasitelkus XX a. Richardo Wagnerio pastatymų bei atlikėjų pavyzdžius, teigiama, kad Petrausko kurtas Lohengrinas buvo artimas rusų teatrui ir dviem ryškiausiems šio vaidmens atlikėjams – Leonidui Sobinovui ir Ivanui Jeršovui. Pažymima, kad XX a. pr. besikeičianti operos pastatymų ir režisūros tradicija, kurios pradininku Rusijoje laikomas Vsevolodas Mejerholdas ir kurio spektaklius matė bei juose vaidino Petrauskas, turėjo tik dalinę įtaką lietuvių operos teatrui. The article discusses Balys Sruoga’s attitude towards State opera and Lohengrin created by soloist Kipras Petrauskas in the performance “Lohengrin” (Dir. Nikolay Vekov, 1926). Based on Petrauskas’ treatise, Sruoga identified the peculiarities of the national/Lithuanian style of acting, emphasized Lohengrin’s “popular and folk expression”, but did not analyze a wider context of the appearance of this image. By the examples of Richard Wagner’s works and performers it was stated that Lohengrin by Petrauskas was close to the Russian opera theatre and two of the most prominent performers of this role, Leonid Sobinov and Ivan Ershov. It was noted that at the beginning of the 20th century the changes in opera production and directing tradition, which was originally held in Russia by Vsevolod Mejerhold, whose performances were watched and later played by Petrauskas, had very little influence on the Lithuanian opera theatre, opera directing and opera acting. Opera performances followed a realistic tradition of the 19th century, and the stage expression did not depend on the director but on the soloists with excellent vocal and dramatic talent. So when it comes to the Lithuanian features of Lohengrin and the Lithuanian style of acting, it is obvious that this impression was made by the personality of Kipras Petrauskas, the world famous Lithuanian opera soloist.

Lietuvių teatro amžius sutampa su lietuvių kritikos amžiumi. Per šį laiką kritika nuėjo tokį pat meistriškumo, profesionalumo ir autorinės minties formavimosi kelią, kokį nuo 1920 m. nuėjo mūsų profesionalus teatras. Kritikos dėka vertiname skirtingus mūsų teatro amžiaus periodus, jos dėka turime tokią, o ne kitokią mūsų teatro istoriją. Galvojant apie kritikos amžių kyla ir retorinių klausimų. Ypač šiandien, kai, nuo pat savo atsiradimo lietuvių spaudoje buvusi ne tik teatrinių įvykių fiksuotoja, bet ir aktyvi viešosios erdvės formuotoja, kritika priversta apmąstyti savo vietą pasikeitusioje visuomenėje, įvertinti radikalias ne tik teatro, bet ir pačios visuomenės transformacijas. Tokių transformacijų per šimtmetį būta ne viena. Juolab kritikos istorija - tai ne vien recenzijos, liudijančios ar reflektuojančios teatro / teatrų spektaklius ir dėliojančios laikmečio scenos meno paveikslą; tai kartu ir kultūros, ir visuomenės, ir net spaudos kaip svarbiausios kritinio diskurso medijos istorija, kurią nuolat veikė vyraujančios estetinės ir ideologinės doktrinos, savo ruožtu turėjusios įtakos ir spektaklių recenzijoms. Spausdintos, arba tekstinės, kritikos istorija itin glaudžiai susijusi su spaudos istorija. Atsidūrusi spaudos diskurse, kritika įgijo išliekamąją vertę - kritikos tekstus buvo galima perskaityti retrospektyviai, o asmeninė, konkrečiai auditorijai skirta autoriaus nuomonė, kurią jis anksčiau pareikšdavo privačiuose pokalbiuose ar bendraminčių susibūrimuose, atsidūrusi laikraščių ar žurnalų puslapiuose, virto apibendrinamąja, laikmečio interesus, skonį, meninę-idėjinę kryptį teigiančia vieša / visuomenine pozicija. The development of theatre criticism in Lithuania is closely connected with the history of the Lithuanian State Theatre, which was the most important subject for theatre critics in the 1920s and 1930s. The most influential theatre critic of the 1930s was Balys Sruoga (1896-1947), who had his own vision for the theatre. The period 1929 to 1934, when Andrius Oleka-Žilinskas (1893-1948) was the director of the theatre, was the most important period in his criticism. This is shown by the friendly relationship between the two men, Sruoga’s favourable reviews, and the scandal over Hamlet (1932, directed by Mikhail Chekhov), for which the director was later obliged to leave Lithuania. In 1931-1933, the press criticised the State Theatre and Oleka-Žilinskas' work. This criticism was based on political rather than aesthetic factors (the press opposed the influence of Russian culture); but it is also important to note that the debate in the public sphere was taken very personally and negatively by Sruoga. His articles from this period show that criticism itself is not sacrosanct, and is not only an interpretation of facts and phenomena, but also a document about human qualities and weaknesses, relationships and attitudes, and criticism itself, which reflects an ability to accept and appreciate both artistic and non-artistic challenges.

Straipsnio tikslas – išanalizuoti lietuvių teatro kritikos laikyseną sovietiniu laikotarpiu. Pasitelkus diskurso teorijos (Foucault) ir kritinės diskurso analizės (Van Dijk) prieigas, siekiama išsiaiškinti, kiek ir kaip kritikos kalbą bei vertinimus veikė vyraujantis / oficialus ideologinis (partinis, valdžios) diskursas ir estetinės doktrinos, o jei veikė, ar galima sovietmečio spektaklių recenzijas laikyti patikimu istorinių teatro tyrimų šaltiniu. Analizei pasitelkiami 1979 ir 1987 m. išleisti lietuvių teatro istorijos tomai ir Henriko Vancevičiaus statytos Juozo Grušo tragedijos „Herkus Mantas“ (1957) refleksija. The article analyses the attitude of Lithuanian theatre criticism in the Soviet period. The discourse theory (Foucault) and critical discourse analysis method (Van Dijk) are used to find out how the official ideological and political discourse affected the language and aesthetical doctrine of theatre criticism. It is shown that the history of the Lithuanian theatre after 1945 was written according to the Soviet theatre history. Critics in their articles used party directives and tried to emphasize the social realistic aesthetics of the theatrical performances. Comparing the volumes (published in 1979 and 1987) of academic Lithuanian theatre history shows that the similarity of their language is paradoxical, even thoughthese texts are written in different periods. One of the most interesting example is “Herkus Mantas” (1957) by playwright Juozas Grušas and director Henrikas Vancevičius, the first performance of Khrushchev Thaw period on the Lithuanian stage, which was analyzed using double significance: as a heroic, epic, monumental, romantic and poetic national tragedy and as a social, atheistic, people tragedy based on Marxist position. “Herkus Mantas” was the first historical tragedy after the forced social realism and Stalinist Non-conflict Theory in 1945–1956, but critics even in the 8th and 9th decades still compared the performance with the Soviet heroic revolutionary plays. Criticism saw the peculiarity and importance of “Herkus Mantas” but it was judged by the rhetoric of ideologically legitimate discourse, emphasizing the aesthetics of the performance with the official doctrine. This example shows that the discourse of criticism was dependent on ideology, but it was free to manipulate the language and form of ideological discourse. This manipulation, or mimicry of the Lithuanian theatre critics in early and late Soviet times makes criticism an unreliable source of historical research, but it also shows an empty form of the official discourse itself in which new (and random) content could have appeared. This new content could have been given by choosing the “reading code”.

Balį Sruogą laikome pirmuoju profesionaliu lietuvių teatro kritiku ir istoriku. Nuo 1926 m. jo prie VDU įsteigto teatro seminaro1 skaičiuojame lietuviškos teatrologijos amžių, ką jau kalbėti apie Sruogos įtaką teatro raidai bei pokyčiams, juolab jo taikomąją kritiką. Sruogos asmenybė įvairiapusė, tačiau tarp kitų jo veiklų teatrologija, kaip suprantame ją šiandien, užima išskirtinę vietą. Galima sakyti, kad būtent Sruoga, nepaisant prieštaringų paties pažiūrų į tam tikrus teatro reiškinius ar kūrėjus, dėjo lietuvių teatro mokslo pamatus, formavo lietuviškos teatro kritikos mokyklą. Toks Sruoga pateikiamas bene išsamiausiai jį kaip teatrologą pristatančioje Algio Samulionio knygoje Balys Sruoga – dramaturgijos ir teatro kritikas (1968). Sakytume, knygos išleidimo metai savaip simboliški ne vien politiniu, bet ir naujos teatrinės eros pradžios požiūriu. Vis dėlto turint galvoje, kad laikas pakoreguoja žinomus faktus, o kalba apie teatro kritiką, kaip ir apie teatro mokslą, visada susijusi su aktualiais scenos meno pokyčiais, norisi grįžti prie Sruogos straipsnio „Naujos idėjos teatro moksle“ (1926), kuriame jis supažindina lietuvių teatralus su teatrologijos pradininkais – vokiečiu Maxu Herrmannu ir rusu Aleksejumi Gvozdevu. Sruoga is Lithuania’s first professional theatre historian and critic; after his studies at Munich University (1921–1923) his writings about Lithuanian theatre show him to have been a very knowledgeable and demanding theatre critic who knew both the school of German theaterwissenschaft (Artur Kutscher and Max Herrmann) and the Russian teatrologia (Aleksej Gvozdev). Sruoga’s founding of the theatre seminar in 1926 at the Lithuanian University marks a turning point in Lithuanian theatrical criticism – critics began to define their work as a methodologically based analysis of current performances and theatre history. This article presents an analysis of Balys Sruoga’s text “New tendencies in theatre science” (1926), where he introduces Max Herrmann’s research in his book “Medieval and Renaissance German theatre history studies” (1914). However, Sruoga read not only Herrmann’s book but also Gvozdev’s articles “German theater science” (1923) and “The results and goals of scientific theater history” (1924), where Gvozdev presents Herrmann’s method as the reconstruction of historical performance and comparative analysis of the available text and image material. Gvozdev can be attributed to the Russian formal school – methodological access of this school is also characteristic of Gvozdev’s articles about the theatre. Gvozdev, as did Herrmann, emphasised the concept of the theatre’s autonomy from [the history of] literature but focused on the phenomena of theatricality. According to Gvozdev, theatricality as the meaning of the whole performance, the scenic imagery and performing techniques, now depended on the director, in the previous epochs – it depended on the participants (performers and spectators) of the performance and on the space in which the performance was staged. This aspect of theatricality was characteristic to researchers of the formal school; Sruoga often used the concept of theatricality, but critically looked at a purely formal approach to theatrical creation. This critique is reflected in his view of Herrmann’s book. Nevertheless, Sruoga was the only one to have drawn attention to the theatrical science in the 1920s that was developing in full force, as well as the necessity of professionalism and methodology both in historical theatre investigations and in the field of criticism. In this way, the root of Lithuanian theatre studies (theatrology) and its theoretical foundations can be linked to the most advanced German and Russian theatre research schools. Sruoga, influenced by them, formulated the concept of the dramaturg, which is equivalent to today’s conception; he actualised the idea of theatre and the theatre director’s autonomy and added new theatrological terms to the critique dictionary. Most importantly – he began research on Lithuanian theatre history, the results of which were published in the study “Lithuanian Theatre in St. Petersburg” (1930), “by reconstructing” not the performances of “Lithuanian Evenings”, but the whole ideological and organisational process of their emergence and development. Although one of the most important of Sruoga’s texts – the analysis of Andrius Oleka-Žilinskas performance of “Šarūnas” (1929) – is difficult to attribute to one method, we can see the influence of Herrmann and Gvozdev’s theories: Sruoga compares theatrical technique (dramaturgical composition, stage visualisation and acting) of performance with the structure and composition of Lithuanian folk songs and distinguishes the “singing musicality” of performance as the meaning of directing.

Recenzijoje aptariamas Gintaro Varno režisuotas spektaklis „Junas Gabrielis Borkmanas“, kurio premjera įvyko Vilniaus jaunimo teatre. G. Varnas grįžo prie Ibseno beveik po dvidešimties metų. Galėjęs analizuoti kartų santykius, vertybių kaitą, sužadinti istorinę atmintį ir konkretizuoti sceninius ryšius tarp aktorių ir vaidmenų, Ibseno pjesės ir kūrėjų biografijų, seno ir naujo teatro, spektaklis susitelkia į formos ir reikšmių skaidrumą, tarsi oponuoja daugeliui paviršutiniškų, chaotiškų, vienadieniškai aktualių spektaklių, tačiau režisūrinis sumanymas, sceninis piešinys ir atlikimas virsta saugia teksto iliustracija. Kalbantis apie ištisos reformatorių, individualistų ir svajotojų kartos žlugimą, spektaklis galėjo būti riboženklis, pradedantis naują meninės ir idėjinės teatro raidos etapą. Režisieriaus sumanymas rezultatyviai įtaigus, bet veiksmo schematizmas, apibendrinti idėjiniai kontrastai ir stilizacija neleido iki galo išplėtoti nė vienos temos. Tai – dar vienas tradicinės raiškos spektaklis, išgujęs iš scenos atpažįstamą, autentišką, čia ir dabar gyvenantį žmogų, su kuriuo būtų galima tapatintis, ginčytis, kurį būtų galima suprasti ar atjausti. O perukai, stilizuotų kostiumų klostės, žaisliniai traukinukai, vaizdo projekcijos tik sustiprina pojūtį, kad tokio teatro laikas negrįžtamai praėjo. Peršasi išvada – jauniesiems kūrėjams nėra su kuo kovoti, nėra prieš ką maištauti, jie nebeturi lygiaverčio varžovo, kuris jaunųjų maištingumui priešpriešintų meistriškumą, atsakomybės jėgą, kūrybiškumą ir gyvenimo patirtį.

Profesionalaus lietuvių teatro formavimosi pradžioje pirmuoju nepriklausomos Lietuvos dešimtmečiu profesijos pamokas išeina ir lietuvių teatro kritika. Straipsnyje analizuojami šio laiko teatro ir spaudos bei jai atstovaujančių recenzentų ryšiai, pastarųjų požiūris į aktualius teatro ir gyvenimo, scenos meno ir literatūros, estetinio ir tautinio angažuotumo aspektus. Išskiriama diskusinė spaudos ir teatro santykių atmosfera. Pristatomi trys skirtingų leidinių, skirtingų patirčių ir kritinių „metodų“ recenzentai – Viktoras Jocaitis, Pranas Lubickas, Vytautas Pranas Bičiūnas. In the beginning of the development of the professional Lithuanian theatre in the first decade of Lithuanian independence, Lithuanian theatre criticism also took its first steps. The article analyses the connection between theatre and its reviewers, their attitude towards contemporary aspects of theatre and life, scenic art and literature, aesthetics and national ideology. The debata¬ble atmosphere of press and theatre is accentuated. Three reviewers of different newspapers and periodicals, different experiences and methods are presented: Viktoras Jocaitis, Pranas Lubickas, and Vytautas Pranas Bičiūnas. The author maintains that the real school of theatrical criticism of that period was not only theatre, but also press. The debates on the state of national art (theatre, literature, fine arts) and its development appeared in publications, shaped multiple public spheres, and theatre criticism got involved into it.

Williamo Shakespeare’o „Hamletas“ pirmą kartą lietuviškai suvaidintas 1932 m. Valstybės teatre. Spektaklis, kurį pastatė rusų aktorius ir režisierius Michailas Čechovas, ne tik sulaukė kontroversiškų vertinimų, bet ir atsidūrė intelektualų diskusijų apie tautinės kultūros uždavinius lauke. Straipsnyje analizuojamos istorinės, politinės ir meninės „Hamleto“ pastatymo bei recepcijos aplinkybės, paaštrinusios XX a. pirmosios pusės modernistinių meno tendencijų ir politinių bei ideologinių pažiūrų sankirtas 4-ojo dešimtmečio Lietuvos kultūros kontekste. The article deals with the first Lithuanian production of “Hamlet”, directed by a Russian actor and theatre director Mikhael Chekhov in the State Theatre in 1932. Hamlet was performed by Andrius Oleka-Žilinkskas, the general manager of the State Theatre, as well as theatre director and actor. The production did not become an artistic event for the contemporaries – the cultural and ideological atmosphere of the interwar Lithuania distorted the ideas of scenic solutions, deformed the criteria of evaluation, and deconstructed the meanings of the tragedy. A disinterested reflection of the performance was strongly influenced by the idea of unified national culture which was forged by a new generation of intellectuals (magazine “Naujoji Romuva”). The realisation of such idea was understood as the resistance to any expansion of foreign artists (first of all, from Russia). The polemics that arose in 1932–1933 between the supporters of the idea and the leaders of the State Theatre (many Russian artists worked there in that period) and its sympathizers (a theatre critic Balys Sruoga was among them) encouraged antagonistic interpretations of “Hamlet” in the local press and society and urged the departure of Oleka-Žilinskas and Chekhov from Lithuania. The period of 1929–1935, which was connected with the artistic development of the State Theatre, determined by those artists and considered a reformist, came to an end.

Švęsdamas 75-metį Lietuvos nacionalinis (iki 1998 - Valstybinis akademinis) dramos teatras kvietė prisiminti čia kūrusius ir kuriančius menininkus, kurie turėjo įtakos jo raidai, kaitai ir recepcijai. Mažojoje salėje vykę susitikimai su režisieriais ir aktoriais kėlė tam tikrą tęstinumo, jaučiamo pastaruosius 25 metus, įspūdį. Šį įspūdį stiprino būrys Jono Vaitkaus auklėtinių ir mokinių, kurie šiandien patys turi savo auklėtinius ir mokinius. Vienas tokių - režisierius Oskaras Koršunovas, kurio ryšys su LVADT / LNDT visą šį laikotarpį buvo ypatingas - konfliktiškas, kovingas, bet ir kūrybingas, veikęs ne tik teatrą, bet ir patį režisierių. On the occasion of its 75th anniversary, the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre (until 1998 the State Academic Theatre) invited us to remember all the artists who have worked there and who still work there, and who have influenced the development, changes and reception of the theatre. Meetings with directors and actors on the Small Stage have given a certain sense of continuity, which has been felt over the last 25 years. This sense was enhanced by a group of Jonas Vaitkus' pupils and apprentices, who now have their own pupils and apprentices. One of them is Oskaras Koršunovas (b. 1969), whose relationship with the LSADT/LNDT throughout this period has been somewhat special: often feuding and conflicting, it has also been creative, not only for the theatre, but also for the director himself. The theatre critic Rasa Vasinauskaitė writes about him.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos šiuolaikinio Lietuvos teatro strategijos, griaunančios sceninio veiksmo naratyvo konstrukciją. Remiantis Lietuvos ir užsienio teatrų pavyzdžiais, išskiriama epizacijos / rapsodizacijos technika. Ši technika keičia tradicinę veiksmo ir reprezentacijos sampratą sakymo aktu, kuria montažu grįstą spektaklio struktūrą. Lietuvos teatre sunkiai surastume tikrųjų postdraminio teatro pavyzdžių. Tačiau jo elementų gausu daugelyje spektaklių, kuriuose draminio ar literatūrinio teksto interpretacija nebėra svarbiausias režisierių ir aktorių tikslas. Interpretacija tampa gerokai sudėtingesnio, varijuojančio keletą (re)prezentacinių priemonių (medijų, gyvos muzikos) sceninio diskurso sukūrimu, kuriame šios priemonės tampa lygiavertės, o kartais ir svarbesnės už aktorių vaidybą, pasakojamą istoriją. Žvelgiant į šiuolaikinės interpretuojančios režisūros tendencijas kaip vieną ryškiausių strategijų galima išskirti epizacijos / rapsodizacijos techniką. Ši technika, būdinga naujosios dramos poetikai, skatina režisierius ja remtis ir statant klasikinius kūrinius. Epizacija suponuoja naracijos ir atlikimo, sakymo ir atvaizdavimo dialektiką, „prisiimančią“ draminio ir sceninio veiksmo funkciją. Spektaklis virsta atvira struktūra, aktualizuojamas improvizacijos elementas. Sakymo ir / ar atlikimo aktas, išlaisvintas nuo fabulos „atkūrimo“, turi įtakos sceninio apipavidalinimo, vaidybos pokyčiams. Intensyvus, dinamiškas, montažo technika grįstas sceninis naratyvas / diskursas provokuoja naujas žiūrovų percepcijos kompetencijas – spektaklio metu jie tampa ne pasyvūs svetimų pasakojimų klausytojai, o aktyvūs savo istorijų kūrėjai. Article analyses the strategies of the contemporary Lithuanian theatre destroying narrative construction of the scenic action. With the help of examples of Lithuanian and foreign theatre the technique of episation / rhapsodisation is being distinguished. This technique replaces the traditional conception of action and representation by the act of performative statement and develops the montage-based structure of the performance. One could hardly find real examples of post-dramatic theatre in Lithuania. But there are plenty of its elements in the performances where the interpretation of dramatic or literary text is no longer the main goal of the director and actors. Interpretation becomes the creation of the complicate scenic discourse, introducing several devices of (re)presentation: media, live music. These devices become equal and sometimes even more important than the acting or narrative story. Looking at the tendencies of the interpretative direction, the technique of episation / rhapsodisation could be distinguished as the most distinct strategies. This technique, characteristic of the poetics of new drama, encourages theatre directors to employ this technique while producing classical plays. Episation presupposes the dialectic of narration and performance, delivery and representation, which assumes the function of dramatic and scenic action. The performance becomes an open structure, and the element of improvisation is being actualised. The act of delivery and / or performance, free from the duty of the “recreation” of the plot, influences the changes of scenic design and acting. The scenic narrative / discourse based by the intensive, dynamic technique of montage, provokes new competences of the spectators’ reception – during the performance they cease being passive listeners of the extraneous tales and become active creators of their own stories.

Režisieriaus Eimunto Nekrošiaus pasirinkimai statyti vieną ar kitą dramos / literatūros tekstą dažnai atrodo atsitiktiniai. Jis ir pats mėgsta sakyti, kad knyga „papuolė į rankas“, už jos, laukiančios lentynoje, nugarėlės užkliuvo akys. Tiesa, kalbėdamas apie motyvaciją statyti, režisierius teigia: „Pirmiausia atsiranda pasipriešinimo jausmas. Ar sugebėsi šią medžiagą suvaldyti, ar ne. Kada suprasi, kad nebesugebi susitvarkyti, įvyks kapituliacija ir reiks uždaryti teatro duris. Taigi yra toks savęs testavimas...“ Praėjusiais dešimtmečiais režisierius ne kartą buvo sustabdęs repeticijas, neužbaigęs spektaklio – jautėsi su kūriniu ar autoriumi nesusikalbėjęs, o gal neradęs tinkamos jam prieigos. Vis dėlto, žvelgiant j pastatytus spektaklius, kūriniai ima sietis tarpusavyje kaip vienas kito tąsa, papildymas. Straipsnyje analizuojami režisieriaus Eimunto Nekrošiaus spektakliai „Pradžia. K. Donelaitis. Metai“ (2003) pagal Kristijono Donelaičio poemą ir Dantės „Dieviškoji komedija“ (2012). Analizei pasitelkiamas fenomenologinis metodas, leidžiantis įvardyti svarbiausius šio režisieriaus kūrybos ir minėtų spektaklių bruožus. Bandoma apibūdinti Nekrošiaus pasirinkimus kaip tokias literatūrinio teksto inspiracijas, kurios yra artimos meninėms režisieriaus intencijoms ir asmeninei patirčiai. Fenomenologija kviečia vertinti teatrinį veiksmą ne kaip įženklintą ir koduotą tekstą, o kaip gyvą, besimainantį kūną, scenoje esančių daiktų ir aktoriaus kūniškumo prezentaciją. Žiūrovą – ne kaip spektaklio ženklus objektyviai dekoduojančią sąmonę, o kaip įkūnytą subjektą, suvokiantį spektaklį ir jo reikšmes per [individualius] juslinius išgyvenimus ir vaizduotę, šiuo požiūriu Nekrošiaus režisūra, grįsta sceninio veiksmo dabartiškumu, atlikimo kūniškumu bei erdvės daiktiškumu, itin artima fenomenologiniam skaitymui, aktualizuojančiam kūrybos ir suvokimo vienalaikiškumą. Article analyses the plays directed by Eimuntas Nekrošius: "The Beginning. K. Donelaitis. Seasons" (2003), following the poem by Kristijonas Donelaitis and Dante's "The Divine Comedy" (2012). The analysis invokes the phenomenological method enabling to identify the most important creative features of the director and the mentioned plays. Phenomenology suggests evaluating theatrical action not as signified or encoded text but as living, mutating body, presentation of things on stage and actor's flesh. Spectator is considered not as consciousness objectively decoding signs of play but rather as incarnated subject perceiving play and its meanings through [individual] sensational experiences and imagination. In this respect Nekrošius direction is based on contemporaneity of stage action, flesh of performance and materiality of space which is very close for phenomenological reading actualizing the simultaneity of creation and perception. The aspects distinguished in the article of Nekrošius theater and its theatrical language – dialog with creation / author and play perceivers, ascribing new life to a recognizable common thing, formalizing of scenic expression through gesture and movement and especially the accentuation of intuition and imagination both in creational and perceptual processes – let the director to be named as scenic phenomenologist He is the kind of creator who does not argue or propose his world evaluation or perception as the only possible, but with the help of his reading / interpretation he rather invites his audience to interpret / perceive the world individually. It is here that his increasing choice for creation works ignoring one-sided position and junctions of conflict forces comes from; many-voiced and many-directional, dramaturgically "not bound" (the director is "bound" only to his own style) composition of scenic action; performance neighbouring with expressive gesture, movement which is nearly dancing. All that makes up what awakes sensations not only of those who create but also of those who observe and who are born in this simultaneous space of the birth and perception of play.

Ar galima apie teatro politiškumą kalbėti (post) (hiper) moderniaisiais laikais? Ar politinis teatras įmanomas XXI a. pradžioje, turint galvoje ne tik postmodernizmo teoretikų akcentuotą visuomenės, kultūros ir meno apolitiškumą, bet ir politines aspiracijas kvestionuojantį postdraminį teatrą? Į šiuos klausimus straipsnyje atsakoma analizuojant politinio teatro sampratą, jo ideologinius ir estetinius aspektus, pristatant ryškiausius XX a. politinio teatro kūrėjus (Bertoltas Brechtas, „Living Theatre“) ir šiuolaikinio lietuvių teatro pavyzdžius. Article analyses the concept of political theatre and its development in the 20th and 21st centuries. Appealing to the standpoint of Hanna Arendt towards politics and art, the article accentuates the concept of theatre as a public space for the development of sociality of individuals- citizens and treats the performance as an aesthetical and political activity of the theatre, which constitutes the values (determination) of the audience. Analyzing the forms of political theatre and art of the 20th century, the author differentiates between transgression typical of the underground modernism of the beginning of the 20th century and resistance of the postmodern art of the end of the 20th century. Analyzing the theory of Bertold Brecht, the most influential representative of the political theatre of the first half of the 20th century, the author points the aspects of epic / dialectic performance, distance performance and critical reception. Discussing the works of the politically engaged American company "Living Theatre", the performance-like form of the spectacle is accentuated. Appealing to the viewpoint towards political theatre developed by Hal Foster, Peggy Phelan, Hans-Thies Lehmann, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, the author distinguishes aesthetical resistance, which is characteristic of the performance art and performative forms of theatre. Having in mind political and socially-critical performances by Lithuanian theatre directors Oskaras Koršunovas and Jonas Vaitkus produced in 2010-2011, the author states that a political aspect of the contemporary performance is based not on its theme, but on its aesthetics, which becomes the criticism of general norms, social and cultural hierarchisation and cultural ideology. This criticism reflects the responsibility of the theatre towards "a small society", which in the times of neoliberal politics and post-industrial economics qualifies theatre as the main space of cognition of reality and creation of human identity.

Recenzijoje analizuojama Ramunės Marcinkevičiūtės parengta knyga „Patirčių realizmas: Dalios Tamulevičiūtės kūrybinės biografijos studija“ (Vilnius, 2011). Recenzentė rašo „Ši knyga įveda į gerokai sudėtingesnį režisierės pasaulį, praverdama ir jos privataus gyvenimo paslaptis. XX a. 10-asis dešimtmetis lietuvių teatre – naujo sceninio herojaus paieškų dešimtmetis, kurio pradžioje teatro scenoje atsiradusius lietuvių išeivijos autorių kūrinius keitė pramoginės komedijos, skirtos patenkinti naujos publikos „lūkesčius“. Tik dešimtmečio antrojoje pusėje teatras grįžta prie klasikinės ar naujos šiuolaikinės dramaturgijos, atvedusios į sceną ir naujus laiko herojus. Viena po kitos pasirodė Williamo Shakespeare’o („Hamletas“, „Makbetas“, „Otelas“), Sofoklio („Edipas karalius“), Henriko Ibseno („Heda Gabler“), Bernard-Marie Koltèso („Roberto Zucco“) tragedijos, atvėrusios režisierių požiūrį į to laikmečio teatrą ir sceninius veikėjus. Straipsnyje analizuojamas Rimo Tumino spektaklis „Edipas karalius“ (1998), atspindėjęs posūkį režisieriaus kūryboje, – aktualizuotą naują klasikinio herojaus sampratą ir suformuotus naujus sceninės dramaturgijos principus. Having in mind the new expectations of the audience and the shift of the theatre towards entertaining performance, the author of the article stresses the birth of new tragic hero, which concretizes the state of loneliness in his “non-tragic” surrounding. The article is based on the performance “Oedipus the King” directed by Rimas Tuminas in the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre in 1998. This production is very important in the artistic carrier of Rimas Tuminas because of the new interpretation of a classical hero, which reflects the new attitude to the contemporary theatre and its aims. “Oedipus the King” shows the endeavour of the director to recover the classical, traditional values and at the same time his fruitless efforts in the new artistic and theatrical reality. The author of the article applies to the terms of “epic theatre” and “epic subject”, stressing the shift of the directorial method of Tuminas towards the theatre-as-a-game principle, and highlights the appearance of the theatrical theme in his productions. This theme becomes the finalizing element of the “Oedipus the King”, which affects both the scenic dramaturgy and content of the performance. Noting the post-modern aesthetics of Tuminas’ direction, the author of the article stresses his reliance on the poetics of the plays of Anton Chekhov and summarizes that the scenic hero of Rimas Tuminas became lonely in the theatre, and this loneliness developed the tragic and farce-like elements of the performance in wich the most important place was taken not by the protagonist of the play but by his environment.

Recenzijoje aptariama Jurgitos Staniškytės knyga „Kaitos ženklai: Lietuvos teatras tarp modernizmo ir postmodernizmo“ (2008) ir apmąstoma postmodernizmo sąvoką bei jos taikymas teatro apibrėžčiai. Staniškytės bandymas patyrinėti XX a. pabaigos – XXI a. pradžios Lietuvos teatrą per modernizmo ir postmodernizmo priešpriešų prizmę yra pirma studija, kurioje poststruktūralistinės analizės principai taikomi teatro praktikai. Lietuviško teatro erdvėje ieškodama atskaitos taškų, kurie žymėtų postmodernistinius pokyčius, Staniškytė įtraukia teatrą į šiuolaikinių kultūrinių tyrimų lauką, apibrėžia teatro meną kaip konkrečios kultūrinės tradicijos produktą, susieja teatro pokyčius su postmodernistinės estetikos paradigma. Knygos struktūra grindžiama postmodernistinei estetikai būdingų bruožų analize. Knygoje jaučiamas teorinio diskurso tirštumas, o svarbios autorės įžvalgos grindžiamos ne itin tinkamais lietuviško teatro pavyzdžiais. Ir iš dalies taip atsitinka todėl, kad autorė eina teorinių konstruktų formavimo keliu, o pastarieji ne visada gali būti pagrindžiami empiriškai. Kita vertus, teatro daugybiškumas, daugiasceniškumas ir kartu vienalaikiškumas, jo fantazminė prigimtis neįspraudžiama į vieno apibrėžto analizės ar tyrimo modelio sistemą. Tad ir Staniškytės knyga vertintina kaip paties teatro meno suponuota teorinių prieigų studija, kurioje įvairiai išsiskleidžia vienas kitą nurodantys, papildantys ir komentuojantys modeliai ir tik menka dalimi postmodernaus lietuvių teatro struktūros elementai. The review discusses a book of Jurgita Staniškytė, titled “Kaitos ženklai: Lietuvos teatras tarp modernizmo ir postmodernizmo” (2008), [Signs of Changes: Lithuanian Theatre between Modernism and Postmodernism], and reflects on the concept of Postmodernism and its application to the definition of the theatre. Staniškytė’s attempt to explore the Lithuanian theatre in the period of the end of the 20th – beginning of the 21st century through the prism of antithesis between the Modernism and Postmodernism is the first study applying the principles of poststructuralist analysis in the theatre practice. In pursuit of points of reference, marking postmodern changes in the area of the Lithuanian theatre, Ms. Staniškytė incorporates theatre into the field of modern cultural research, defines the art of theatre as a product of specific cultural tradition and correlates changes in theatre to the paradigm of the postmodern aesthetics. The structure of the book is based on the analysis characteristic to the postmodern aesthetics. The book is heavy with theoretical discourse, and author’s key insights are supported by not quite adequate examples of the Lithuanian theatre. This is partly a result of the fact that the author has chosen the path of formation of theoretical constructions, which may have not always been justified empirically. On the other hand, the multiplicity, multiple stages and at the same time the simultaneity present in the theatre, and its fantasmic nature cannot be thrust into the system of one defined model of analysis or research. Thus, Staniškytė’s book should also be regarded as a study of theoretical approaches, presupposed by the art of theatre itself that reveals a variety of models referring, supplementing and commenting each other, and only a small portion of structural elements of the postmodern Lithuanian theatre.

Straipsnyje tyrinėjama performatyvumo raiška šiuolaikiniame teatre ir giliau analizuojamas atskiras lietuvių režisieriaus Eimunto Nekrošiaus spektaklio „Hamletas“ atvejis. Autorė pažymi, kad XX a. 7–10 dešimtmečiais dramos teatro praktikoje įvyko ryškus posūkis nuo verbalinės prie neverbalinės raiškos. Eksperimentinio teatro spektakliams tapo būdinga fizinė raiška ir kūniškumo suponuota performatyvumo estetika. Todėl šiame straipsnyje Nekrošiaus „Hamletas“ gvildenamas iš performatyvumo strategijų pozicijos. Autorė atkreipia dėmesį į „Hamleto“ scenovaizdžio funkcionalumą, vaidybos fiziškumą, sceninių įvaizdžių konkretumą ir materialumą. Pabrėžia, kad Hamletą vaidinantis Andrius Mamontovas, roko dainininkas, spektaklio sistemoje atlieka ne tik aktoriaus, bet ir „performerio“ funkciją. 10 dešimtmetyje lietuvių teatre įvyko režisūros paradigmos transformacija nuo simbolizavimo, ženklinimo ir kodavimo prie performatyvios praktikos. Tačiau lietuvių režisūra išsaugojo autorinės interpretacijos dėmenį, atspindintį spektaklio kaip savarankiško estetinio objekto sampratą. Lyginant Nekrošiaus ir jaunų režisierių statytus spektaklius, išryškėjo esminiai skirtumai. Juos lemia ne tiek performatyvios praktikos, kiek meninio pasisakymo strategijų pasirinkimas: lietuvių režisierius išsaugoja autorinės interpretacijos dėmenį ir spektaklio performatyvumas čia neatsiejamas nuo pjesės konkretizacijos. Nekrošiaus „Hamlete“ performatyvumas įgyja estetinę reikšmę per pastatymą; tai tokia sceninė konkretizacija, kai vaidybinis tekstas išplečia draminio teksto ribas. The article analyses the expression of performativity in contemporary theatre with further attention dedicated to the case of the performance “Hamlet” staged by a Lithuanian director Eimantas Nekrošius. The author notes that drama theatre of the 7th–10th decades of the 20th century witnessed a prominent transition from verbal to non-verbal expression. Experimental theatre started to use physical or bodily expression of the aesthetics of performativity. Therefore, in this article, Nekrošius’ “Hamlet” is analysed from the view of performativity strategies. The author draws attention to the functionality of the scenic view of “Hamlet”, the physicality of acting, the specifics and materiality of scenic images. The author also highlights that Andrius Mamontavas, a rock singer performing the role of Hamlet, is not only the actor in the system of the performance, but also a performer. The tenth decade marks the transformation of the directing paradigm of the Lithuanian theatre, i.e. the theatre turns to performative practice. However, Lithuanian direction preserved the element of author’s interpretation, which reflects the concept of a performance as an independent aesthetic object. When comparing performances staged by Nekrošius and young directors, key aesthetic difference emerged. They were determined by performative practice and the selection of strategies of artistic expression: the Lithuanian director preserves the element of author’s interpretation, and the performativity of the performance is an integral part of the concretisation of the play. In Nekrošius’ “Hamlet”, performativity gains aesthetic meaning through direction; it is a scenic concretisation, when the text of the performance enhances the limits of the drama text.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiami Jono Vaitkaus kartu su dailininku Jonu Arčikausku 1995– 1996 m. statyti spektakliai. Atkreipdama dėmesį į plastinį šių spektaklių vaizdingumą autorė pabrėžia tikslingą režisieriaus ir dailininko bendradarbiavimą, leidžiantį atsirasti naujam spektaklio tekstui. Analizuojant vaizdinį-plastinį spektaklių tekstą, randama paralelių su lėlių teatru, apibrėžiama sceninio personažo kaip retorinės figūros samprata, akcentuojama pasikeitusi scenografijos reikšmė meninių spektaklio įvaizdžių sistemoje. Straipsnio finale apibendrinamas dailininko teatro ir režisūrinio teatro sampratų tapatumas XX a. pabaigos scenoje The article overviews the staged performances of Jonas Vaitkus, created together with Jonas Arčikauskas in 1995–1996. Focusing her attention on the plastic of the imagery of the performances, the author emphasizes the purposive collaboration of the director and the set designer, which permits the emergence of a new discourse in the play. While analysing the imagery-plasticity text of the performances, parallels to the puppet theatre are discovered, a concept of a stage personage as a rhetorical figure is delineated, emphasizing a changed value of the set design in the system of artistic imagery. Finally, the concept of the sameness of the artist’s theater and the director’s theater on stage at the end of the 20th century is summarized

Straipsnyje analizuojama nuo 1991 m. pasikeitusi interpretacinė lietuvių teatro režisierius Eimunto Nekrošiaus estetika. 1991-1995 m. jo statytuose spektakliuose "Nosis", "Mažosios tragedijos" ir "Trys seserys" išryškėja fragmentinė sceninio veiksmo modeliavimo ir sceninių vaizdinių konstravimo struktūra, konkretizuojanti menininko būseną Lietuvai atgavus nepriklausomybę. Poetiniai režisieriaus įvaizdžiai šiuose spektakliuose įgyja kontrastingus pavidalus ir aktualizuoja dramatišką bei groteskišką tikrovės pajautą. Nauja Nekrošiaus spektaklių struktūra, nauji stilistiniai jo režisūros pokyčiai, palyginti su kitų šio laiko lietuvių bei užsienio režisierių darbais, liudija postmoderniojo teatro tendencijų skverbimąsi į lietuvių scenos meną ir jų pokyčius dėl individualių meninės raiškos priemonių. The article analyzes the interpretational aesthetics of Lithuanian theatre director Eimuntas Nekrošius, which underwent certain changes since 1991. During the time period of 1991-1995 the fragmentary structure of modeling of the stage action and construction of stage images becomes prominent in his shows "Nosis", "Mažosios Tragedijos" and "Trys Seserys", which concretizes the state of the artist upon the reinstatement of the independence of Lithuania. The director’s poetical images in the said shows acquire contrasting shapes and actualize a dramatic and grotesque perception of reality. The new structure of Nekrošius’s shows, the new stylistic changes of the direction compared with the works of other Lithuanian and foreign directors of the period, evidence the penetration of the trends of the postmodern theatre into the Lithuanian stage art and their changes as the result of individual means of artistic expression.

The sociology methods and its research principles can be successfully applied to the analysis of Lithuanian theatre of 1990-1999 representing the formation of the new Lithuanian society in a new epoch. Nevertheless, to realize the changes which took place during the 1990s, a decade earlier, i.e. the 1980s is to be recalled, when the Lithuanian stage entered the period of “theatricality". Then, in addition to real life, it demonstrated the being of the scene, and releasing its own potential it allowed spectators “to sec the unseen and to hear the unheard’ - all what is hidden behind the theatre illusion. The well known directors of that period had concentrated at individual artistic quest accusing the theatre creators of younger generation of breaking off from reality, for their Epicurism. In that respect the Lithuanian theatre art of that period underwent deep crisis caused by the gap between theatrical manifestations and people’s expectations and social reality. Cause No. 1 of that crisis was a certain dramatic selection in social reality when an artistic personality was isolated from the collective anonymous mass for not performing any social part. Cause No. 2 was the fact that the previous social reality itself looked as if existing in a transit zone in which the characters of the former society “were wandering” while the new reality tried the future social roles and formed into a future social structure. Cause No. 3 was politics of the first Lithuanian Revival years which assumed the role of the institution consolidating the people, it turned into theatrical deed representing the existence of society and reality. It converted a politician into an ideal hero solving social problems. Only at the very end of the 20th century a true dramatic hero declaring new restrictions and new threats returned to the stage. Then “the social drama” representing a different style and a different theatre model entered the scene.

Addressing the director’s methods of expression and his innovations in acting and stenography, the article aims to link these with examples of Russian theater of the 1920s and 1930s as well as with works of Lithuanian artists in the 1990s. Changes in the perception of grotesque, satire, farce, as well as of direction and stage dramaturgy in the 20th century and on Lithuanian stage are analysed.Koršunovas’ productions appeared to be difficulttodescribeorretell,requiringa generalization of historical and cultural context for interpretation. It is with this play that the State Small Theatre of Vilnius began its life, and where the actors of today‘s older generation performed their exemplary roles. In this article, “The Cherry Orchard” is linked with events in the life of Lithuania, and compared with the works of foreign directors, marked with traits that are characteristic only for it: ethical importance, common atmosphere, relevance, and original stage decisions.

The article is an interpretation of Rimas Tuminas’ production of Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” in 1991. This play started the history of the Vilnius Small Theater, in which today’s elder generation of the theatre’s actors played their exclusive roles. “The Cherry Orchard” is associated with the events in Lithuania and compared with the works of foreign directors. Characteristics typical only of “The Cherry Orchard” such as ethical significance, a solid atmosphere, relevance, and the play’s memorable scenic solution are distinguished.

Straipsnyje "Lietuvos režisūra (1990-2000). Raidos tendencijos" apžvelgiama lietuvių teatro raida po nepriklausomybės atgavimo iki 2000 metų. Autorė pateikia išsamų istorinį ir kultūrinį kontekstą, kuriame visuomeniniai ir politiniai įvykiai turi įtakos teatro sistemos ir meninių formų kaitai. Vienas po kito gimsta ir byra nepriklausomi teatrai, kuriasi savarankiškos trupės, inicijuojami meniniai projektai ir festivaliai, statomi vyresnės ir jaunesnės kartos lietuvių režisierių (Jono Vaitkaus, Eimunto Nekrošiaus, Rimo Tumino, Oskaro Koršunovo, Gintaro Varno, Igno Jonyno, Cezario Graužinio ir kt.) spektakliai. Autorė restauruoja reikšmingesnius spektaklius, apibūdina jų estetinę vertę ir meninę kryptį, pabrėžia jų formos bei turinio naujumą lietuvių teatro ir režisūros raidos kontekste. Straipsnyje atkreipiamas dėmesys į teatro ir nacionalinės dramaturgijos, teatro ir kritikos santykius, aktualių socialinių temų scenoje atsiradimą, naująjį sceninį vaizdingumą, naujų vaidybos erdvių įsisavinimą ir pabrėžiama, kad 1990-2000 m. lietuvių teatro paieškos aprėpia romantizmo, modernizmo ir postmodernizmo estetines tendencijas. The article “Stage Direction in Lithuania in 1990-2000: the Development” overviews the development of Lithuanian theatre after restoring the independence till 2000. The author explicitly describes historic and cultural background where public and political events triggered changes in a system of theatres and art in general. New independent theatres and artistic groups appeared and collapsed. New artistic projects and festivals were being organised. Younger and older stage directors (Jonas Vaitkus, Eimuntas Nekrošius, Rimas Tuminas, Oskaras Koršunovas, Gintaras Varnas, Ignas Jonynas, Cezaris Graužinis, and other) built new plays. The author of the article restores more important plays, describes their esthetical and artistic value, and highlights the originality of their forms and contents in a context of the development of Lithuanian stage direction. The article pays attention to relationship between theatre and national dramaturgy and criticism; notices the appearance of relevant social problems on stage; analyses new stage imagery; and states the assimilation of new performance areas. The article underlines, that artistic search of Lithuanian theatre 1990-2000 covers romantic, modern, and post-modern esthetical tendencies. The article aims to disclose dynamics of those searches and intensity of theatre life.

Skyriuje aptariama 1970–1980 m. teatro raida, nagrinėjamos repertuaro ir trupės problemos. Jaunimo teatras, įkurtas ne vien meniniais, bet ir ideologiniais sumetimais, privalėjo vykdyti estetinę-auklėjamąją funkciją, griežtai laikytis Repertuaro komisijos reikalavimų. Teatras visą dešimtmetį kovojo su senuoju bei bandė kurti naują kitokio teatro modelį. Aštuntojo dešimtmečio Jaunimo teatro veikla publikacijoje suskirstoma į du vienas kitą pratęsiančius, bet kartu savarankiškus ir skirtingus tarpsnius: pirmasis siejamas su Vytauto Čibiro (1968–1970), antrasis, nuo 1975 m., – su režisierės Dalios Tamulevičiūtės vadovavimu teatrui. D. Tamulevičiūtė, tapusi vyriausiąja režisiere, pradėjo tvirtinti jauno teatro jaunam žiūrovui pozicijas ir iki tol padriką repertuarą kartu su savo auklėtiniais – XIX dramos aktorių laida – tikslingai kreipti lyrinės intonacijos ir emocinio nerimo teatro kryptimi. 1975–1980 m. jai pavyko sukurti teatrą, kuris buvo artimas ne tik jaunimui bei vyresniems žiūrovams, bet ir atskleidė ryškiausias aštuntojo dešimtmečio scenos meno tendencijas. Be to, šios režisierės atvesti jaunieji aktoriai netrukus tapo neatsiejamais Jaunimo teatre pradėjusios skleistis režisieriaus Eimunto Nekrošiaus autorinės režisūros teatro dalyviais. E. Nekrošiaus 1980 m. pastatytas „Kvadratas“ pradėjo naują (1980–1990) Jaunimo teatro raidos dešimtmetį. The section of “Lithuanian Theater History” volume III, devoted to the National Youth Theater (established in 1965), discusses the evolution of the Theater in 1970–1980, examines problems of repertoire and company. The Youth Theater – established not only for artistic, but also for ideological reasons – had to perform aesthetic-educational function, strictly adhere to requirements of the Repertoire Commission. For the entire decade, the Theater battled with the old one and attempted to create a new model of a different theater. The publication divides activities of the Youth Theater in the 80ies into two mutually continuous, but, simultaneously, independent and different periods: the first one is related to Vytautas Čibiras’ (1968–1970) management, the second, starting from 1975, to Dalia Tamulevičiūtė’s managements of the Theater. After becoming a senior director D. Tamulevičiūtė began promoting the line of young theater for the young audiences and worked on previously mixed repertoire together with her students – XIX class of drama actors – and consistently pointed it into the direction of theater of lyrical intonation and emotional anxiety. In 1975–1980, she managed to create the Theater, which was close not only to youth, but also to older audiences; it also revealed the most vivid trends in performing arts of the 80ies. Besides, young actors invited by this director soon became indispensable members of Eimuntas Nekrošius directing author (autorinės režisūros) theater, which emerged in the Youth Theater. The play “The Square” (Kvadratas), directed by E. Nekrošius in 1980, launched a new decade (1980–1990) in evolution of the Youth theater.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiamos komunikacinės šiandienos teatro galimybės. Tarpkultūriniai ryšiai, naujos komunikacijos priemonės veikė mobilesnes teatro formas, dinamiškesnę raiška, ir kūrybinį laboratoriškumą, skirtą palaikyti interaktyvią komunikaciją su skirtingų kalbų bei kultūrinių patirčių žiūrovais. Straipsnyje apžvelgiamos lietuvių režisierių Eimunto Nekrošiaus, Jono Vaitkaus, Oskaro Koršunovo ir Gintaro Varno varijuojamos naracijos formos, kurios padeda susieti jų darbus su naujos interkultūrinės komunikacijos reikalavimais. The essay provides a review of the communicative possibilities of contemporaiy theatre. The new opportunities offered by intercullural integration for the theatre and its creators require new means of communication. They determine more mobile theatrical forms, more dynamic expression and creative improvisation, which should maintain an interactive communication with spectators who speak different languages and have different cultural experience. The communicative possibilities contextualize the art of theatre; seeking such a contextualization the creators more and more often focus on new narrative forms and visual expression. The essay provides an overview of the varied forms of narration by the Lithuanian theatrical directors Eimuntas Nekrošius, Jonas Vaitkus, Oskaras Koršunovas and Gintaras Varnas that help associating their works with the requirements of the new intercultural communication. The definitions of these forms are sought in the systems of the performance as a discourse and the performance as a postmodernist discourse, which orient the creators towards a search for an architectural structure of the performance, creative mastery and artistic energy, as well as improvisations with the possibilities of parody. All these "tools" create a semantic polysemy of the performance, which stimulates the spectator's reception and his interpretative activity. With the help of the notions "pop taste" and "intertextuality", attention is focused on the negative and positive effects of the intercultural integration of the play and the creator: international contacts and festivals force the creators to seek popularity in the global context simultaneously destroying the local traditions, though in this way they are risking to become outsiders of the local context and conformists of the global context. Given the limited possibilities to produce new artistic forms indefinitely, the creative mastery becomes the ability to manipulate different - artistic and real life - contexts: the creative act is paralleled to the play with aesthetic and sociocultural signs and to variations in their semantic systems. It is namely the perception and reception of these variations that stimulates an interactive dialogue of the stage and the spectators, theatre and reality.

Straipsnyje analizuojami modernizmo ir postmodernizmo bruožai 1966-1997 m. lietuvių teatre. Modernios ir postmodernios teatro poetikos kaita siejama su kintančia politine ir visuomenine teatro situacija, kurią veikė komunistinis režimas ir kultūriniai bei socialiniai pokyčiai po Lietuvos nepriklausomybės atgavimo. Režisierių Juozo Miltinio, Jono Vaitkaus, Jono Jurašo modernistinė XX a. 7-9 dešimtmečių laikysena siejama su misionieriškais teatro uždaviniais, opozicija socialistinei meno ideologijai ir naujų režisūrinio pasisakymo formų sklaida. J. Miltinio spektaklis "Lauke, už durų" (1966) įvardijamas kaip egzistencializmo ir ekspresionizmo pavyzdys lietuvių scenoje. Analizuojant 1990-1997 m. J. Vaitkaus ir Oskaro Koršunovo spektaklius įvertinama jų tranzitinė - nuo modernizmo prie postmodernizmo - situacija, kurią atspindėjo ne tik meninių raiškos priemonių, bet ir teatro uždavinių kaita. Akcentuojamas 10 dešimtmečio lietuvių teatro postmodernus - vertybių perkainojimo, idealistinių pažiūrų desakralizacijos, istorinio palikimo demitologizacijos - būvis. The article analyzes the traits of modernism and postmodernism in Lithuanian theatre in 1966-1997. The development of the modern and postmodern theatre poetics is related with the changing political and social situation in theatre, which was influenced by the Communist regime and the cultural and social changes upon the reinstatement of the independence of Lithuania. The modernist stance of directors Juozas Miltinis, Jonas Vaitkus and Jonas Jurašas in the sixties – eighties of the 20th century is related with the missionary tasks of the theatre, the opposition to the Socialist art ideology and the dissemination of the new forms of expression. J. Miltinis’s play "Lauke, Už Durų" (1966) is considered an example of existentialism and expressionism in Lithuanian theatre. When analyzing the plays by J. Vaitkus and Oskaras Koršunovas of 1990 – 1997 their transitional situation– from modernism to postmodernism is evaluated, reflected by the change in both artistic expression tools and the tasks of the theatre. The postmodern state of Lithuanian theatre of the nineties, i. e. the reappraisal of values, desacralization of the idealistic worldview and demythologization of the historic heritage is emphasized.

Pasitelkus poststruktūralistų terminiją, straipsnyje analizuojama šiuolaikinio teatro („(po)žodžio“, arba postdraminio, laiko) situacija bei jo komunikacinės galimybės. Akcentuojamas struktūrinis teatro pokytis, kai atsisakydamas reprezentuoti ar imituoti realybės reiškinius, teatras juos konstruoja/dekonstruoja per sceninio reginio (vaizdo) sukūrimo aktą. Minėtas aktas sukuria savo referentus, kurie jau nepriklauso Logos sistemai, bet atstovauja savam postmoderniam diskursui. The article makes a short overview of the structuralist-semiotic approach to theatre studies and concentrates on poststructuralism. The latter treats the language as writing (cf. body language), which forms its own space of creation or 'inscription' (J. Derrida) and at the same time creates its context as well as the objects and meanings in the context. In addition to the visual level, the contemporary theatre is as well concerned with the act of construction or inscription in the space, therefore such an act may be called the act of construction/deconstruction. It is performed both by the author (the artistic director or the actor) and by the perceiver (the spectator). It is exactly the gesture of deconstruction that suggests a different way of 'writing', creation, or presentation of phenomena and objects. According to Hans-Thies Lehmann, contemporary theatre is a post-dramatic theatre. In its most characteristic features it represents postmodernist culture and exists in as well as creates a postmodernist discourse. Having been only imitated by the theatre (text perceived as a linguistic object is a certain analogue of the reality), the reality, the object, and the subject presented by this discourse now belong to the reality of the inscription in the stage space; they are now the products of this reality and manifest their meanings only within its context. On the other hand, this reality is found in the intertextual space which, though denying the law of similarity, preserves the possibility of reference. In contemporary theatre, the action itself and the act of creation, construction or deconstruction become the referent. In other words, contemporary theatre, which functions and structures itself according to the laws of postmodernist discourse, is based on the coordination/synchronization of the rules of composition and decomposition, reference and referential distance, and auto- and heteroreference.

The year 1990 was a turning point in the artistic, social and political life of Lithuania. It was the eve of new historical events and the rebirth of independent Lithuania. Patriotism, nationality and faith: these three words were pronounced with pride and hope. The commotion took place not on the stage but in life, on the street, in everyone’s home, and on television screens. The fate of the nation and future generations was being decided. “Lithuania will be free!” chanted old people and children alike. Lithuania became independent. This happened slightly later, through the blood of 1991, spilt in defending what was of utmost importance. After the 1980-1987 plays of the best directors of the older generation (Dalia Tamulevičiūtė, Gytis Padegimas, Jonas Vaitkus, Eimuntas Nekrošius and Rimas Tuminas), who seemed to have felt the approaching changes, the next three years were a desperate reproduction of a single form and aesthetics, by waving the national identity and ethnic ideas like flags. Life’s theatre found'itself on the stage and lost all artistic value. Artfulness and authorship were sacrificed on the altar of national romanticism; the faces of actors living through the suffering of repressions on the stage grimaced at the reality of the 50 years of Soviet life. The gloomy epitaph to the past that seemed to have become an obligation for every author silenced some artists altogether: creative authenticity now requires a different emotional suggestiveness and another approach to reality.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiama repertuaro sąvokos interpretacija dabartiniame teatre ir iškeliama Akademinio (dabar Nacionalinio) dramos teatro repertuaro problema, kuri siejama su besikeičiančiais teatro vadovais ir laiko reikalavimais. Repertuarinio teatro sąvoka atsirado XVII a. pabaigoje. Repertuarinis teatras siekė išsaugoti ir nuolat puoselėti dramaturgijos palikimą, garantuoti nuolatinį statomų pjesių rodymą. Atsiradus režisūriniam teatrui (XIX a. pabaigoje - XX a. pradžioje) repertuarinio teatro sąvoka pasikeitė, nes ėmė atspindėti vieno ar kito režisieriaus estetinę kryptį. Visi Lietuvos valstybiniai teatrai nuo pat jų įsikūrimo pradžios buvo repertuariniai, t.y. atliko edukacinę funkciją, nes pažindino su įvairiu literatūriniu ir dramaturginiu palikimu. Repertuariniam teatro kryptingumui buvo skiriamas ypatingas dėmesys, veikė Repertuaro komisija, virtusi didžiausiu kūrybinės teatrų raidos stabdžiu, nes buvo reikalaujama ar draudžiama statyti vienus ar kitus veikalus. Akademinis dramos teatras - vienas svarbiausių sostinės teatrinio gyvenimo epicentrų - dėl objektyvių priežasčių negalėjo lenktyniauti su mobilesnėmis ir jaunesnėmis teatro scenomis. Konservatyvi ir nuosaiki repertuaro politika, konservatyvi režisūra subrandino teatro skilimą į Akademinio bei Mažojo teatrų, neišvengiamai keitėsi ir vadovai. Teatro repertuarinė politika tampriai susijusi su režisieriaus repertuariniu kryptingumu. Skirtingi režisieriai (J. Miltinis, J. Jurašas, H. Vancevičius, P. Gaidys, S. Varnas, J. Vaitkus, E. Nekrošius, R. Tuminas, O. Koršunovas, G. Varnas), skirtingos estetikos, skirtingi repertuarai - būtent tai per 10 metų išgyveno Akademinis dramos teatras. The article provides an overview of interpretation of the concept of repertoire in the present-day theatre and raises the problem of the Academic (presently National) Drama Theatre, related to the changing heads of the theatre and time related requirements. The concept of the repertoire theatre emerged at the end of the 17th century. The repertoire theatre attempted to retain and continuously develop the dramaturgy heritage and guarantee a continuous showing of the staged plays. After the emergence of the directed theatre (at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century), the concept of the repertoire theatre changed, since is started to reflect the aesthetic directions of one or another director. All the national theatres of Lithuania were repertoire ones from the very start, i. e. they performed an educational function, since they got the viewer familiarized with different literary and dramaturgical heritage. Special attention was dedicated to the repertoire direction, there were repertoire commissions, which were the largest hindrance of creative development, since they demanded or prohibited staging certain plays. The Academic Drama Theatre, i. e. one of the most important theatre life epicenters was not able to compete with more mobile and younger stages. The conservative and moderate repertoire policy and conservative direction resulted in the split into the Academic and the Small theatres, the heads or the theatres also were changing. The repertoire policies are closely related with the repertoire related views of the directors. Different directors (J. Miltinis, J. Jurašas, H. Vancevičius, P. Gaidys, S. Varnas, J. Vaitkus, E. Nekrošius, R. Tuminas, O. Koršunovas, G. Varnas), different aesthetics, different repertoires – those are the aspects, incurred by the Academic Drama Theatre during the time period of ten years.
