We propose a combined nodal integration and virtual element method for compressible and nearly incompressible elasticity, wherein the strain is averaged at the nodes from the strain of surrounding virtual elements. For the strain averaging procedure, a nodal averaging operator is constructed using a generalization to virtual elements of the node-based uniform strain approach for finite elements. We refer to the proposed technique as the node-based uniform strain virtual element method (NVEM). No additional degrees of freedom are introduced in this approach, thus resulting in a displacement-based formulation. A salient feature of the NVEM is that the stresses and strains become nodal variables just like displacements, which can be exploited in nonlinear simulations. Through several benchmark problems in compressible and nearly incompressible elasticity as well as in elastodynamics, we demonstrate that the NVEM is accurate, optimally convergent and devoid of volumetric locking.

This study aimed to determine the apparent digestibility coefficients and digestible energy of dry velvet bean fodder (Mucuna pruriens). The indirect method was used, considering as a basal diet the concentrate used in the university guinea pig farm (Lima, Peru). The experiment had an adaptation phase (14 days) and a faecal collection phase (5 days). Ten adult male 3-month old guinea pigs randomly distributed in individual metabolic cages were used. Five animals were fed the basal diet and the other five with the experimental diet: 80% basal diet and 20% dry velvet bean fodder. The apparent digestibility coefficients obtained for the dry velvet bean were: 66.29% dry matter, 66.13% organic matter, 74.02% crude protein, 50.82% crude fibre, 60.18% ether extract, 78.22% nitrogen-free extract and 73.33% ash. Resumen Objetivo: Presentar un caso clínico infrecuente, con una resolución novedosa. Caso Clínico: Paciente con aneurisma micótico de la arteria mesentérica superior manejado satisfactoriamente en forma endovascular. Los aneurismas micóticos viscerales son entidades infrecuentes, con alta morbimortalidad. Es por ello que su manejo debe ser multidisciplinario y considerar diferentes factores al momento de tomar decisiones. En el contexto de la continua mejoría y disponibilidad de las técnicas endovasculares, estas han emergido como una opción terapéutica válida, con posiblemente menos complicaciones. Conclusión: La resolución endovascular del aneurisma micótico visceral es factible, pero su indicación y el manejo completo es aún caso a caso.

Objective: to discuss an infrequent vascular case with a novel resolution. Case Report: Superior mesenteric artery mycotic aneurysm successfully managed with coil embolization. A visceral mycotic aneurysm is an infrequent vascular pathology with high risk of complications and mortality. The endovascular management might offer a treatment option with lower morbimortality rates in selected cases. Conclusion: Endovascular resolution of mycotic visceral aneurysms is both feasible and secure but it must be done in a case to case basis.

It is observed in patients with hematological malignancies such as acute myeloid leukemia and neutropenia. We report a 23 year old male presenting with cough, fever and malaise. A bone marrow biopsy led to the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia. During the first cycle of chemotherapy the patient presented fever: blood cultures were positive for Klebsiella pneumoniae. Despite antimicrobial treatment, fever persisted; a computed tomography showed a focal splenic lesion; a left exudative pleural effusion appeared. A Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight mass spectrometry identified the presence of S. capitata. After multiple antifungal treatments and pleural cavity cleansing by means of videothoracoscopy and laparoscopic splenectomy, the infection resolved and the patient completed his chemotherapy.

Solar radiation resource assessment is crucial for potential solar power plant sites. Site selections with inadequate resource assessment could result in complete economic project failures. Accurate solar resource data can be gathered by thermopile based sensors like pyrheliometers for direct normal irradiance measurements (DNI) and pyranometers for direct global and diffuse horizontal irradiance measurements (GHI and DHI respectively) as specified in [ISO 9060]. Pyrheliometers and pyranometers used for DHI measurements require a sun tracker which follows the course of the sun. The correct alignment of the sensors on the tracker and the tracker itself is essential. Usable data can only be obtained, if a periodic and frequent cleaning procedure of the sensors is guaranteed [Geuder, Quaschning, 2006]. This maintenance demand could cause increased cost especially for remote locations. Semiconductor based Rotating Shadowband Irradiometers (RSI), which measure DNI, GHI and DHI are less affected by soiling [Geuder, Quaschning, 2006] and do not require a solar tracker. Furthermore, a small PV solar panel is sufficient for the electrical supply of a RSI. Thus RSI are the preferable choice for long term measurement campaigns on remote sites where daily cleaning is not feasible, despite their lower accuracy when compared to well-maintained thermopile based sensors. However, a thorough calibration is required which must consider also the correction function for systematic errors caused by its spectral non-uniform responsivity, cosine-response as well as temperature effects. This report presents the results of a round robin test conducted calibrating a single RSI according to different methods described in [Jessen et al., 2017] at the Plataforma Solar the Almeria (PSA) and at an additional CIEMAT test site facility in Madrid and discusses the possible reasons for any detected deviations. After a short description of the calibration setups in section 2, the evaluation method is described in section 3. Then results are presented in section 4 and finally conclusions are summarized.

Las imágenes por resonancia magnética han mostrado ser de gran utilidad en el diagnóstico y seguimiento de múltiples enfermedades que afectan el sistema nervioso central. El gadolinio se ha utilizado ampliamente a nivel mundial. Se estima que desde su introducción se han administrado más de doscientos millones de dosis de MCBG en el mundo. Los medios de contraste basados en Gadolinio (MCBG) fueron considerados por mucho tiempo medicamentos con un alto perfil de seguridad, la literatura reporta incidencia de efectos adversos inmediatos como cefalea, mareo y alteración del sentido del gusto. Estudios realizados pocos años después de la introducción de los MCBG mostraron que había depósitos de gadolinio en los tejidos, pero no se conocía su significancia clínica Fue hasta 2006 cuando se publicaron los primeros reportes que asociaban el depósito tisular del ion gadolinio proveniente de los MCBG con una entidad inflamatoria sistémica del tejido conectivo similar a la escleroderma conocida como Fibrosis Sistémica Nefrogénica (FSN) en pacientes con falla renal crónica. En 2013 se describió por primera vez la asociación entre el uso de los MCBG y el aumento progresivo de la intensidad de señal del núcleo dentado y los globos pálidos en las imágenes de RM ponderadas en T1 sin medio de contraste. En esta revisión se describen los aspectos más relevantes de la fisiopatología de estos hallazgos considerando su diagnóstico diferencial. Magnetic resonance imaging has been shown to be very useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of multiple diseases affecting the central nervous system. Gadolinium has been used extensively worldwide. It has been estimated that since its introduction more than two hundred million doses of GBCA have been administered globally. Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) were long considered medicines with a high safety profile, the literature reports incidences of immediate adverse effects such as headache, dizziness, and altered sense of taste. Studies performed a few years after the introduction of GBCA showed that there were gadolinium deposits in the tissues but their clinical significance was not known. It wasn’t until 2006 when the first reports were published that associated the gadolinium ion tissue deposits from GBCA with a systemic inflammatory entity of the connective tissue similar to scleroderma known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), in patients with chronic renal failure. In 2013, the association between the use of GBCAs and the progressive increase in the signal intensity of the dentate nucleus and the globus pallidus in T1-weighted MRI images without contrast medium, was described for the first time. This review describes the most relevant aspects of the pathophysiology of these findings taking into account their differential diagnosis.

Accurate measurements of solar irradiance are crucial for the planning, tests and operation of solar power plants. The measurement uncertainty caused by the calibration is the most relevant contribution to the overall uncertainty of well-maintained radiometers. Uncertainties of field pyranometers and pyrheliometers can be significantly reduced by calibrations through WRR (World Radiometric Reference) traceable reference sensors compared to indoor calibrations. This report presents the results of the three campaigns, in which new responsivities were derived for 80 field sensors. El interés de productores, comercializadores y consumidores de la región por la mora de Castilla producida en el municipio de Ibagué y la poca información sobre sus cualidades dieron origen a la presente caracterización del fruto en seis estados de madurez. Los resultados morfológicos y fisicoquímicos indican que el grado óptimo de recolección es 5 atendiendo al buen índice de cosecha, firmeza, peso, sólidos solubles totales (SST), rendimiento y material insoluble en alcohol (MIA), en esta fase de maduración la acidez limita el crecimiento bacteriano no obstante persistan problemas fúngicos como Botritys Cinérea. Así mismo, la cosecha en grados de madurez 4 y 6 no son viables, debido a bajo peso y volumen; y fragilidad estructural que con frecuencia incide en la lixiviación, fermentación y magullado de la fruta respectivamente. En general el análisis estadístico pone de manifiesto diferencias significativas entre grados de madurez respecto a peso, diámetro mayor, volumen, acidez, SST, minerales y MIA, ratificando la importante relación entre el momento de cosecha y estado de desarrollo del fruto debido a su incidencia directa en la calidad del producto y competitividad comercial.

Cholesterol is an important molecule; it is necessary for the biosynthesis of steroidal hormones, bile salts and to maintain the stability of biological membranes in animal cells. However, its excess is negative and is responsible for the development of many diseases involving the heart and brain, or in the generation of some types of cancer. For these reasons, the cellular cholesterol levels must be finely regulated and therefore, an infinite number of mechanisms participate in this regulation, which undertake the organism as a whole. These mechanisms should begin to operate efficiently from the intake of cholesterol from the diet, its incorporation into the enterocyte, where are involved carriers such as ABC and NCP1 transporters, PDZ structural motif, to name a few. It is also necessary an adequate regulation of circulating cholesterol and once inside the body, there should be a perfect harmony between the addition of cholesterol to various tissues, its metabolic use, the mechanisms of its tissue deposition, and the synthesis of this lipid. From this perspective, this review offers a general view of the molecular mechanisms that allow the regulation of extra and intracellular cholesterol levels. El colesterol es una molécula importante; es necesario para la biosíntesis de hormonas esteroideas, de sales biliares y para mantener la estabilidad de las membranas biológicas en células animales. Sin embargo, su exceso es negativo y es responsable de generar enfermedades que comprometen al corazón, al cerebro o que generan algunos tipos de cáncer. Por estos motivos, los niveles de colesterol celulares deben estar finamente regulados, y para ello, participan una infinidad de mecanismos que comprometen al organismo como un todo. Estos mecanismos deben comenzar a operar en forma eficiente desde la ingesta de colesterol dietario para su incorporación al enterocito, donde están implicados transportadores de tipo ABC y NCP1, los motivos estructurales PDZ, entre otras. También debe estar adecuadamente regulado el colesterol circulante y una vez en el interior del organismo, debería establecerse una perfecta armonía entre la incorporación del colesterol a los diversos tejidos, con su utilización metabólica, la generación de reservas de colesterol en los mismos y la síntesis de este lípido. Desde esta perspectiva, la presente revisión ofrece una visión general de los mecanismos moleculares que permiten la regulación de los niveles de colesterol a nivel extra e intra celular.

ALA is the precursor of EPA and DHA and its dietary availability is limited. Vegetable oils rich in ALA (48–64%) are alternatives for increasing its consumption. The conversion of ALA into EPA and DHA and the ratio (EPA+DHA/ALA) was evaluated in different tissues from male Wistar rats fed ALA –rich oils. Four groups (n=12/group) were fed for 21 days with oils from: a) corn (CO, 3% ALA); b) soybean (SO, 6% ALA); c) sacha inchi (SIO, 48% ALA) and; d) chia (ChO, 64% ALA). María Mercedes Carranza nace en Bogotá el 29 de mayo de 1945, cuando ya Jorge Gaitán Durán y Álvaro Mutis estaban próximos a publicar sus primeros libros. No es la primera voz femenina en la historia de la poesía colombiana -las cronologías contienen algunos nombres que poco o nada aportan a la evolución del género-, pero sí la que con mayor rigor ha asumido el oficio poético como un ejercicio crítico y de ruptura. María Mercedes Carranza irrumpe en la poesía colombiana con una escritura que reniega de toda tradición -histórica, política, literaria-, atreviéndose incluso a desvirtuar los tópicos que hasta entonces habían enmarcado la literatura hecha por mujeres: sentimentalismo, tono recatado, retoricismo. Entendida como negación, su poesía puede calificarse como "parricida", se escribe contra la figura del padre - paradigma y legado-, la figura de la patria, la figura de una sociedad patriarcal, hasta encontrar su propia voz: "En mi primer libro hay muchas alusiones a mi padre en contra. Con la finalidad de disminuir los errores durante la preparación de los conductos radiculares, se han introducido diversas modificaciones en los sistemas de instrumentación mecanizados de níquel-titanio. Se realizó un estudio in vitro para comparar el grado de transporte que se presenta a nivel de la unión del tercio apical con el tercio medio de conductos radiculares con el sistema rotatorio Protaper Universal y el sistema manual de níquel-titanio, con la técnica de fuerzas balanceadas. Se trabajó con 52 conductos mesiales de 26 molares maxilares y mandibulares, las cuales fueron divididas en dos grupos. El primer grupo de conductos (n = 28) fueron instrumentados con Protaper Universal rotatorio y el segundo grupo de conductos (n = 24) fueron instrumentados con técnica manual de fuerzas balanceadas. Las raíces mesiales de los molares fueron sumergidas en una matriz de acrílico, la cual permitió manipular las preparaciones, realizar cortes transversales y comparar los conductos radiculares antes y después de la instrumentación, para establecer las diferencias que se apreciaron en cuanto al transporte apical. Las imágenes obtenidas fueron fotografiadas con un microscopio estereoscópico y analizadas mediante el programa Autodesk AutoCAD® 2007. Finalmente, los datos obtenidos fueron tabulados y analizados con el programa Stata® 9.0 v. En el presente trabajo Protaper provocó menos transporte apical comparado con la técnica manual de fuerzas balanceadas. In order to reduce errors during root canal preparation, there have been several changes in instrumentation with rotatory systems of nickel-titanium. This is an in vitro study and the aim was to compare the degree of transportation that occurs at the union between the apical third and half third of root canals with the rotaroty Protaper Universal and nickel titanium manual system with balanced force technique. We worked with 52 mesial canals of 26 first and second maxillary and mandibular molars, which were divided into two groups. The first group (n = 28) was instrumented with rotary Protaper Universal and the second group (n = 24) was instrumented with manual technique with balanced force. The mesial roots of molars were immersed in a matrix of acrylic, which allowed manipulating the preparations with transversal cuts and comparing the wear of the root canals before and after the instrument to set the differences were observed in the apical transport. The images obtained were photographed with a stereoscopic microscope and analyzed with the Autodesk AutoCAD® 2007. Finally, the data were tabulated and analyzed with Stata® V.9.0. Protaper Universal rotatory results showed a decreased apical transport compared with the manual technique with balanced forces.

Nowadays, having leadership is synonym of possessing an on-demand characteristic. It is well known that being a leader is similar to someone who is not only productive and influential, but also someone who is capable of inspiring and guiding others. Contrary to the popular beliefs, leadership skills are not essentially innate and can be learned and improved by who desires to implement or use them in different aspects of life. However, the opportunities given in order to improve those skills are somehow uncommon. Taking into consideration that the educational establishments, where students spend great part of their lives, becomes imperative to prepare them for life after the educational process. Consequently, this study is focused on fostering leadership skills in 10o. graders, so that they can be prepared for a future life and society full of competition and challenges, in which those skills will play a positive and beneficial role, not only highligthin them in the working field, but also as a help in every single aspect of their lives En un una sociedad actual que se encuentra en constante cambio, el tener habilidades de liderazgo diferencia a algunos individuos de otros, puesto que poseerlo en una característica que se encuentra altamente valorado en todo tipo de organizaciones. Ser un líder es muchas veces un sinónimo de alguien productivo e influyente que es capaz de inspirar y guiar a otros. Contrario a la creencia popular, las habilidades de liderazgo no son puramente innatas y pueden ser aprendidas o mejoradas por quien desee implantarlas o utilizarlas en diferentes aspectos de la vida. Sin embargo, las oportunidades para generar dichas habilidades a nivel educacional son escasas. Tomando en consideración que es en los establecimientos educacionales en donde los estudiantes pasan gran parte de su vida, se vuelve de caracter imperativo el preparar a los estudiantes para su vida luego de la escuela. Es por esto, que este estudio se centra en el fomento de dichas habilidades de liderazgo en alumnos de segundo año medio para, de esta manera, prepararlos para un futuro y una sociedad lleno de competencia, en la cual el poseer liderazgo les favorecerá , no solo destacándolos en su el ámbito laboral; sino también siendo de gran ayuda en todos los aspectos de su vida.

Para ello centramos la atencion en el sector chaupiyunga, etnocategoria geografica de alta valorizacion en el sistema vertical de pisos ecologicos entre la costa y el altiplano. Se caracterizo la situacion cultural en esta cuenca ubicada en la subarea Valles Occidentales del Centro Sur Andino y se comparo con la situacion del valle de Chillon, Andes Centrales. El panorama arqueologico en ambas zonas integra una amplia variedad de componentes culturales que, en el caso del Lluta, comprende una mezcla de elementos de tierras bajas, sierra, altiplano e Inka, mientras que en el Chillon confluyen rasgos costeros, chaupiyunga y altoandinos. En el caso del Lluta, se agregan rasgos funerarios y de arte rupestre. Para ambas zonas, pero con distintos niveles de especificidad las fuentes etnohistoricas tambien senalan la concurrencia de varias entidades sociales. Lo importarte es que este heterogeneo escenario del chaupiyunga se repite en otras zonas chaupiyunga del sur de Peru y contrasta con los sectores bajos de los valles que tienden a ser culturalmente mas homogeneos. El estado actual del conocimiento arqueologico no permite senalar con precision el o los mecanismos concretos de interaccion o complementariedad que expliquen la variabilidad observada en el registro arqueologico. Primeramente, este no se corresponde con la idea de islas multietnicas diferenciadas entre si por conjuntos de rasgos propios. Por el contrario, los restos materiales de los diferentes componentes o referentes culturales aparecen mezclados en cada uno de los sitios, por lo que pueden representar varios mecanismos de interaccion social que funcionaron paralela y secuencialmente. Archaeological, ethnohistorical, and hioanthropological data from Late Intermediate and Late Periods (ca. A.D. 1,000-1,530) was cross-examined to evaluate whether people of the Lluta Valley organized their economy under the Third Case of John Murra model ofVerticality. To do this, we focused on the chaupiyunga sector a geographic ethnocategory of high valuation in the system of the ecological tiers between the coast and highlands, for its productive qualities and geographic connectivity. The cultural composition of this basin located in the western valleys sub area, of the South Central Andes was compared of what has been observed in the Chillón valleys, in the Central Andes. The archaeological arrangement in both zones combines a variety of cultural ceramic style components. While the Lluta valley shows a mixture of items from the lowlands, sierra, altiplano and Inka, the Chillón basin integrates coastal, chaupiyunga and high-Andean elements. For the Lluta case funerary and rock ark features. XVI and XVII century ethnohistorical sources, of different level of specificity, coincide for both regions the interrelation of several social entities. It is important to note that the heterogeneous scenario of the chaupiyunga is observed in similar ecological zones in Southern Peru, which contrasts with the homogeneity of the lower sections of the valleys. The state of the art does not allow to precise the mechanisms of interaction and complementarity to explain the variability of the archaeological records. First there is not correspondence with the idea of multiethnic "islands " differentiated by particular set features among themselves. On the contrary, the material is mixed in each of the studied sites, which seem to mean that several mechanisms of interaction were simultaneously or sequentially functioning. We conclude that chaupiyunga was a multiethnic ecological space co-habited, visited and or lead by social groups of diverse origin that access to this productive zone under different mechanisms of complementarity and interaction, which may have included verticality (with is modalities of coastal verticality, decentralized micro verticality, centralized vertical archipelago), horizontality simple exchange operations, military protection, married alliances through the exchange of spouses.

La evidencia muestra los trastornos menores en salud en estudiantes universitarios como un factor relevante de ser estudiado. Una variable asociada al rendimiento académico, no tan sólo por las características individuales de ellos, sino también por lo que significa el integrarse a un sistema que impone una serie de exigencias y demandas, por ejemplo un cambio en el desempeño de roles, organización del tiempo, entre otras, que deben compatibilizar con sus hábitos de adolescentes, actitudes y cambios orgánicos. De modo de dimensionar el problema, aplicamos un cuestionario diseñado en la Universidad de Barcelona, adaptado por nosotros, a una muestra de estudiantes que ingresaron en primer año de enfermería en una universidad privada en Chile. 62 personas participaron voluntariamente del estudio. 94% corresponde a mujeres. De los 18 problemas presentados en el instrumento, los participantes contestaron en promedio afirmativamente a 7,5 de ellos y negativamente a 12,5. Dolor osteomuscular, cefalea y trastornos del sueño son los trastornos más frecuentes, presentes en más de la mitad de los estudiantes encuestados. Encontramos algunas correlaciones entre los trastornos: correlación positiva intermedia entre "dificultades para mantener el sueño" e "ingerir menos calorías que las necesarias"; esta última variable tiene asociaciones débiles con varios otros trastornos menores. Se obtuvo una correlación negativa, aunque baja, con ingerir más calorías que las necesarias. Resultados similares encontramos en lo relativo a la higiene del sueño. La ingesta calórica superior a los requerimientos es mayor en la muestra estudiada que en otras investigaciones. Evidence shows that minor health disorders are a relevant factor to be researched among students at universities. This is an issue not only related to individual characteristics, but also might be associated to academic performance. This problem could be influenced by requirements imposed by the educational system, such as a change in students' roles and organization of their own time, among others. These elements must be made compatible with adolescent habits, their attitudes and biologic changes. To gauge this problem, we have used a survey designed at the University of Barcelona, and modified it for our own purposes. The sample is composed of 62 first year students of a nursing program in a private university in Chile. 94% of the sample was female. On average, participants answered affirmatively to 7.5 of the problems presented on the list, and negatively to 12.5 (Total = 18). Musculoskeletal pain, headache and sleep disorders are the most common disorders present in over half of the students surveyed. We found correlations between some disorders: Intermediate correlation between "Difficulties in maintaining sleep" and "Eating fewer calories than the body needs." This second variable is associated to some other disorders. There was a low negative correlation between "Difficulties in maintaining sleep" and "Eating more calories than the body needs." Similar results related to sleep hygiene were obtained from other researchers. Excessive Calorie Intake is higher than results reported in other studies.

Angiotensin II acts via angiotensin type 1 receptors and is a major inducer of inflammation and oxidative stress. Local renin-angiotensin systems play a major role in the development of age-related disorders in several tissues. These processes are delayed, but not totally abolished, by blockade of angiotensin signaling. A specific receptor for renin and its precursor prorenin has recently been identified. We previously showed that neurotoxin-induced dopaminergic (DA) cell loss is decreased by inhibition of angiotensin receptors, but the location and functional effects of prorenin receptor (PRR) in the brain, including the DA system, are unknown. In the substantia nigra of Macaca fascicularis and in rat primary mesencephalic cultures, double immunofluorescence analysis revealed PRR immunoreactivity in neurons (including DA neurons) and microglia, but not in astrocytes. Administration of the PRR blocker, handle region peptide, led to a significant decrease in 6-hydroxydopamine-induced DA cell death in the cultures,whereas administration of renin with simultaneous blockade of angiotensin receptors led to an increase in 6-hydroxydopamine-induced cell death. These results suggest that active agent angiotensin II-independent PRR intracellular signaling may contribute to exacerbation of DA cell death in vivo. Therefore, potential neuroprotective strategies for DA neurons in Parkinson disease should address both angiotensin and PRR signaling.

Epidemiological studies have reported that the incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) is higher in postmenopausal than in premenopausal women of similar age. Several laboratory observations have revealed that estrogen has protective effects against dopaminergic toxins. The mechanism by which estrogen protects dopaminergic neurons has not been clarified, although estrogen-induced attenuation of the neuroinflammatory response plays a major role. We have recently shown that activation of the nigral renin-angiotensin system (RAS), via type 1 (AT1) receptors, leads to NADPH complex and microglial activation and induces dopaminergic neuron death. In the present study we investigated the effect of ovariectomy and estrogen replacement on the nigral RAS and on dopaminergic degeneration induced by intrastriatal injection of 6-OHDA. We observed a marked loss of dopaminergic neurons in ovariectomized rats treated with 6-OHDA, which was significantly reduced by estrogen replacement or treatment with the AT1 receptor antagonist candesartan. We also observed that estrogen replacement induces significant downregulation of the activity of the angiotensin converting enzyme as well as downregulation of AT1 receptors, upregulation of AT2 receptors and downregulation of the NADPH complex activity in the substantia nigra in comparison with ovariectomized rats. The present results suggest that estrogen-induced down-regulation of RAS and NADPH activity may be associated with the reduced risk of PD in premenopausal women, and increased risk in conditions causing early reduction in endogenous estrogen, and that manipulation of brain RAS system may be an efficient approach for the prevention or coadjutant treatment of PD in estrogen-deficient women.

Tobacco is the fourth cause of the global burden of disease, accounting for 79.9 million loss of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2001. In 2002, tobacco-attributable mortality in Chile represented 17% of total mortality.To estimate the direct cost of tobacco in Ischemic Heart Disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Lung Cancer, explore patients' disposition to answer a health related expenses questionnaire, validate the instruments used and determine an adequate sample size for an upcoming study.Socio-demographic and health care related variables were investigated among patients attending two public hospitals for ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer, in a cross-sectional study. Costs were estimated using the national public health insurance price list and market prices. Tobacco-attributable fraction was then applied to calculate the tobacco-attributable cost of each disease.The instruments used were validated. The group of lung cancer patients was smaller due to increased mortality prior to interview. Lung cancer generated the largest total and attributable direct costs. The costs in patients with ischemic heart disease were significantly lowerThere were some difficulties in the application of the questionnaire to register medication use. The sample size needed in a larger study was calculated for each of the three diseases. We recommend that a definitive study addresses tobacco-attributable direct costs related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

El presente artículo da cuenta del ejercicio del poder en las relaciones existentes entre los profesionales de salud en formación (estudiantes) y sus preceptores (profesionales de enfermería); el modo en que éstos -desde su posición asimétrica de poder- generan sentimientos adversos para el aprendizaje de aquéllos, a través de la violencia simbólica y la violencia explícita, en el afán de controlar el cuerpo en términos de su productividad y su rendimiento. Fundamenta sus argumentaciones a partir de las ideas de Pierre Bordieu desde la escuela estructuralista, y las de Michael Foucault y Gilles Deleuze desde la perspectiva postestructuralista, quienes hicieron sus aportaciones a las ideas de control, poder, biopoder y violencia simbólica. Hace una analogía de esta situación de maltrato hacia estudiantes con los círculos que se generan en escenarios de violencia intrafamiliar, reconociendo roles homólogos en ambos contextos: la víctima, el victimario, los testigos silentes y los testigos activos. Por último, relaciona estos razonamientos con estudios de percepción de la violencia en estudiantes de enfermería en los campos clínicos chilenos. The present article is an account of the power exercise in the existing relations between the professionals of health in formation (students) and its teachers (nurses); how teachers, from an asymmetric power position, generate adverse feelings for the learning of those, through the symbolic violence and the explicit violence, in the eagerness to control the body in terms of its productivity and its yield. It bases its argumentations from the ideas of Pierre Bordieu from the structuralist school, and those of Michael Foucault and Gilles Deleuze from the post-structuralist perspective, who made their contributions to the ideas of control, power, bio-power and symbolic violence. It makes an analogy of this situation of mistreat towards students with the circles that are generated in domestic violence, recognizing homologous rolls in both contexts: the victim, the aggressor, the silent witnesses and the active witnesses. Finally, it relates these reasoning to studies of perception of violence towards the students of nursing in Chilean clinical teaching.

Three regional rock art studies undertaken in the southern hemisphere (northwest central Queensland in Australia, Lluta Valley in northern Chile and Quebrada de Humahuaca in Northwest Argentina) are analysed. Based on the relationships between rock art and other aspects of the physical, social and chronological context of its production, we show the articulation between the production of rock art and past social strategies. The three examples demónstrate many consistencies in the way rock art has been utilised in arid environments while also identifying regionally distinct variations in technique and function. In each of the arid regions, competition aróse for limited and valued resources. In each example, the production of rock art was used as a powerful tool to negotiate newly arising circumstances in order to ensure predictable and desirable economic and social outcomes for the artists' group. The methods and form used to achieve these outcomes varied in each case study, because of the availability of materials for art production, the topography and environmental conditions in each specific área, particular cultural preferences and the ways in which people utilised art. In northwest central Queensland the rock art assemblage was employed for the negotiation of group identity at several levéis. In the Lluta Valley, the geoglyphs embody social, political and economical aspirations, being produced as a means of legitimating the access of lama caravans to the coast and its resources. In the Quebrada de Humahuaca increased competition for resources led to the production of different rock art assemblages; the herders produced panels that played roles such as marking grazing territories, commemorating past events and most significantly, as part of the ritual life of the herders. Se presentan tres estudios regionales en ambientes áridos del hemisferio sur: centro noroeste de Queensland en Australia, valle de Lluta en el norte de Chile y Quebrada de Humahuaca en el Noroeste Argentino. A partir del análisis de los vínculos contextúales entre el arte rupestre y aspectos físicos, sociales y cronológicos de su producción, se explican los modos en que la producción del arte se articula con diferentes estrategias sociales. Aunque los casos de estudio revelan consistencias en el empleo del arte rupestre en ambientes áridos, asimismo exhiben variaciones regionales en técnica y función. En cada una de las regiones desérticas estudiadas, las condiciones ambientales restrictivas y la competencia por recursos fue un factor influyente en la producción del arte. Los artífices usaron el arte rupestre como una poderosa herramienta para conseguir y asegurar resultados sociales y económicos concretos, cuya variabilidad en las diferentes regiones obedeció a la disponibilidad de materias primas, condiciones topográficas y ambientales, preferencias culturales específicas a cada grupo, así como a los usos específicos del arte rupestre. En el centro noroeste de Queensland, el arte rupestre fue empleado, en diferentes niveles, en estrategias de negociación de identidad y pertenencia al grupo. Mientras que en el valle de Lluta, los geoglifos materializaron aspiraciones sociales, políticas y económicas de grupos de tierras altas orientadas a legitimar el acceso, mediante el tráfico de caravanas, a los recursos costeros. En la Quebrada de Humahuaca, la creciente competenciapor recursos condujo a la producción de diferentes conjuntos de arte rupestre parparte de pastores, cuyo rol radicó en la marcación de territorios de pastoreo, eventos conmemorativos y, principalmente, como parte de la vida ritual de los pastores.

En la Quebrada de Humahuaca, la creciente competenciapor recursos condujo a la produccion de diferentes conjuntos de arte rupestre parparte de pastores, cuyo rol radico en la marcacion de territorios de pastoreo, eventos conmemorativos y, principalmente, como parte de la vida ritual de los pastores.

"We report on the effects of temperature and DC magnetic field on the modulated non-resonant microwave power absorption measurements at 8.8-9.8 GHz, in powder samples of iron niobate, FeNbO4 (FN), in the monoclinic phase (wolframite-structure). Two techniques recently implemented are used: magnetically modulated microwave absorption spectroscopy (MAMMAS) and low field non-resonant microwave absorption spectroscopy (LFNORMAS), the measurements were performed in the 90-450 K temperature range. MAMMAS response suggests that the dominant magnetic exchange is antiferromagnetic at low temperature, with a paramagnetic behavior for high temperature. The profiles obtained by plotting the slope vs. temperature of the LFNORMAS line, while cooling or heating, are similar to those detected by the MAMMAS technique, giving evidence that both types of measurement are due to the same processes of absorption. Diversos factores de riesgo han sido señalados en la aparición de psicopatología y evolución desfavorable en la epilepsia. Como tales se incluyen la edad de comienzo de la enfremedad, el tipo de crisis, la presencia simultánea de diversos tipos de crisis, el daño orgánico cerebral, el uso de fármacos con efectos laterales deletéreos, la presencia de crisis hereditarias de mal pronóstico, a los que deben agregarse los factores ambientales. La evaluación del desempeño psicosocial de los sujetos con epilepsia proporciona información acerca de la influencia de estos factores en la adaptación social de los individuos portadores de esta enfermedad. Con la finalidad de obtener un perfil en la adaptación al medio social de los consultantes en el nivel primario de atención de salud se aplicó a un grupo de ellos el Inventario Psicosocial de Crisis de Washington, test específicamente diseñado para sujetos con epilepsia. Los resultados obtenidos señalan una deficiente adaptación de estos pacientes, mostrando cifras similares con aquellos provenientes de otro servicio estatal como el Instituto Psiquiátrico de Santiago y con los pertenecientes a estratos socioeconómicos bajos. Esta última variable impresiona jugar un rol de relevancia en los sujetos portadores de epilepsia A number of risk factors have been mentioned, in epileptic patients, as determinants of both the development of psychopathological disorders, and the prognosis of the seizure disorders itself. These factors include: age of onset of epilepsy, seizure type, coexistence of more than one type of seizure, secondary effects of anticonvulsants, presence of organic brain damage, hereditary forms of epilepsy, and environmental factors. Psychosocial evaluation may report the level of social adjustment in epileptic patients. In this paper we report the assessment of psychosocial functioning in a group of epileptic patients referred from public primary health care. Patients were assessed using the Washington Psychosocial Seizure Inventory (WPSI), a tool specifically tailored for the evaluation of epileptic patients. The use of WPSI showed that patients attending public primary health care facilities present a wide range of psychosocial disorders, comparable to patients coming from the, also public, Psychiatric Institute of Santiago, and with patients coming from lower class attending the Chilean League Against Epilepsy. No significant differences were found among these groups. Belonging to lower class seems to play an important role in psychosocial functioning in epileptic patients

Objetivo: Revisar las complicaciones maternas y perinatales de los embarazos triples atendidos en el Servicio de Obstetricia del Hospital Barros Luco-Trudeau. Pacientes y Método: Se analizan 11 embarazos triples ocurridos entre enero de 1996 y diciembre de 2004. Resultados: Hubo una incidencia de 1 embarazo triple en 4.730 partos. Dos embarazos fueron resultado de tratamientos de fertilidad. Se registró 1 óbito y 1 muerte (polimalformado) a los 35 días de vida. El parto se resolvió entre las 29+1 y 36+3 semanas de gestación mediante cesárea, en 55% por inicio de trabajo de parto. Se utilizó surfactante pulmonar en 8 de los 32 recién nacidos (25%) y ventilación mecánica en 5 (16%). La complicación materna de mayor frecuencia fue el síndrome hipertensivo del embarazo (50%), dos preeclampsias y un síndrome de Hellp. La utilización de días cama por los recién nacidos fue de 822 días para 32 casos (mediana: 21 días; rango: 6-64 días). El total de días cama utilizados por las 11 gestantes fue 270 días, con promedio de 25 días. Conclusión: Aún cuando se registraron buenos resultados perinatales, los embarazos triples se asocian a mayor morbilidad materna y perinatal. Además producen un mayor gasto de recursos de neonatología, especialmente debido a prematurez Objective: To review the maternal and perinatal complications of the triplet pregnancies registered in our service. Patients and Method: We analyzed 11 triplet pregnancies with an incidence of 1 in 4,730 childbirths, between January 1996 to December 2004. Results: Two pregnancies were been from fertility treatments. There was only 1 stillbirth and 1 death to 35 days of birth (multiple malformations). The childbirth was resolved between the 29+1 and 36+3 weeks of gestation. The resolution was by caesarean section, in 55% for labor. Pulmonary surfactante was necessary to use in 8 of the 32 new born (25%), and mechanical ventilation in 5 (16%). The maternal complication of greater frequency was hypertensive syndrome of the pregnancy appearing in 50% of the cases, 2 preeclampsia and one Hellp syndrome. The use of bed-days by new born was 822 days for 32 cases, (median 28 days; rank: 6-64 days). The total bed-days used by the 11 pregnant were 270 days, with an average of 25 bed-days. Conclusion: Even though in our casuistry good perinatal results were registered, triplet pregnancies are associated to greater maternal and perinatal morbidity. Tesis (Contador Auditor) En las puertas del siglo XXI, Chile enfrenta la tarea de consolidar un proceso de crecimiento económico estable, cuyos frutos se distribuyan de manera equitativa en el conjunto de la sociedad. En función de lo anterior se destaca el papel que desempeñan las pequeñas y medianas empresas (PYMES) en el desarrollo del país y las oportunidades que brindan al futuro. La realidad nos muestra que las pequeñas y medianas empresas representan la inmensa mayoría del universo empresarial de Chile, y es razonable pensar que son básicamente el segmento que esta dando origen a las empresas de mayor tamaño y que, adecuadamente fomentadas, pueden prosperar y contribuir a que la actividad productiva nacional, se adapte con fluidez a las cambiantes condiciones de los mercados. Así, la integración de este sector al mercado nacional requiere que la PYME supere algunas de las principales limitaciones que enfrenta, algunas derivadas del tamaño de sus operaciones, de factores culturales, de imperfecciones del mercado y políticas de financiamiento que dificultan su acceso al crédito. Esta es la principal restricción que enfrenta la PYME con relación a la banca, su no acceso al financiamiento en igualdad de condiciones que las grandes empresas. Esta restricción limita seriamente el impacto de todos aquellos programas auspiciados por la autoridad, destinados al mejoramiento y modernización de los procesos productivos y de gestión de la Pyme. Valorización Económica y Vías de Financiamiento de una PYME Otra desventaja frente a las grandes empresas es que estas poseen mejor capacidad de negociación y mayor acceso a nuevas tecnologías, las que avanzan demasiado rápido para que empresas pequeñas y medianas puedan mantenerse al día innovando tecnología, la cual viene de cualquier parte del mundo tomando en cuenta la globalización en la que estamos insertos. Por esto así como nacen nuevas PYMES cada año, también muchas de estas, desaparecen. Por esto son fundamentales las instituciones de ayuda y el apoyo estatal. Son varias las instituciones del estado que apoyan a las PYMES, siendo el más destacado el apoyo de CORFO; muchas empresas aprovechan sus programas, algunas con resultados muy buenos, aunque muchos no saben ni siquiera de su existencia. Si bien hay un gran espacio entre PYMES y el estado en cuanto a comunicación y ayuda, este espacio también existe entre PYMES y grandes empresas. Pues estas ya han superado los problemas de gestión, que las PYMES enfrentados con entusiasmo y profesionalismo, pero aun así están lejos están lejos de superar la barrera inquebrantable de la experiencia y los recursos de los que disponen las grandes empresas, además de tecnología, comercialización, manufactura y desarrollo de personas.

En excavaciones realizadas en el clásico sitio AZ-70, cementerio San Miguel de Azapa, se lograron registrar los rasgos constructivos de un túmulo y el sustrato ceremonial de tales monumentos. Con estas evidencias se propone una interpretación alternativa de la Fase Alto Ramírez (600 a.C.- año 0) en el valle de Azapa, caracterizando a estas construcciones monumentales como importantes componentes ideológicos de modificación del paisaje y de representación del nuevo orden social de estas incipientes sociedades sedentarias y hortícolas Excavations in the classic Az-70 site, cemetery San Miguel de Azapa, was excavated to register the constructive characteristics of a ceremonial mound. Se presenta un estudio del arte rupestre de la quebrada de Quesala, ubicada en el borde oriental de la cuenca del Salar de Atacama (segunda región de Antofagasta, norte de Chile). Este trabajo se centra en la relación entre el arte rupestre y su entorno espacial, a partir de la consideración de las imágenes rupestres, los atributos del ambiente natural y los rasgos culturales del entorno. Se enfatiza el particular emplazamiento del arte rupestre con respecto a rasgos geográficos y culturales determinados. Así, se identificó una asociación recurrente entre arte rupestre y rasgos geográficos específicos (zonas de amplitud del cañón, ubicación en puntos que comunican a pisos ecológicos complementarios, vinculación con determinados rasgos culturales tales como senderos, estructuras de piedra de carácter transitorio, agrupaciones intencionales de mineral de cobre, entre otros). Esto permite proponer que el arte rupestre se localizó en esos espacios en virtud de particulares atributos del entorno, y que tal elección cultural responde a condiciones de tránsito y movilidad de grupos humanos prehistóricos, probablemente de los períodos Formativo y Medio (ca. 1.000 a.C.-900 d.C.). This paper presents the results of a rock art study carried out at Quebrada Quesala on the eastern border of the Salar de Atacama basin (Antofagasta, second region in northern Chile). The study is focuses on the relationship between the rock art and its surrounding space, emphasizing the location of the rock art within the context of the natural and cultural features of the landscape. A recurring association was identified between the rock art and five wider sections of the generally narrow canyon of Quesala, which is connected to complementary ecological zones. As well, the rock art was linked to specific cultural features such as trails, stone structures of transitory camps, and the intentional grouping of copper bearing stones, among others. Based on these finding, I propose that the rock art was located along the wider section of the canyon of Quesala to denote or because of its particular geographic attributes, and that the choice of location was a cultural response to the conditions of passage of mobile prehistoric human groups. This rock art was possible made between the Formative Period and Middle Period (ca. 1.000 a.C.-900 d.C.).

High frequency [1-500 MHz] measurements of the Magneto-Impedance (MI) of glass-covered Co$_{69.4}$Fe$_{3.7}$B$_{15.9}$Si$_{11}$ microwires are carried out with various metal-to-wire diameter ratios. A twin-peak, anhysteretic behaviour is observed as a function of magnetic field. A maximum in $\Delta Z/Z$ appears at different values of the frequency $f$, 125, 140 and 85 MHz with the corresponding diameter ratio $p$ = 0.80, 0.55 and 0.32. We describe the measurement technique and interpret our results with a thermodynamic model that leads to a clearer view of the effects of $p$ on the maximum value of MI and the anisotropy field., Comment: 5 pages and 6 figures

Giant magneto impedance (GMI) effect for as-cast Vitrovac$^{\textrm{\scriptsize\textregistered}}$ amorphous ribbons (Vacuumschmelze, Germany) in two configurations (parallel and normal to the ribbon axis) is studied over the frequency range [0.3-400 MHz] and under static magnetic fields -160 Oe $< H_{dc} < $+160 Oe. We demonstrate the capacity growth of multiple-element antenna arrays (MEAs) in a realistic propagation environment using WiSE, an experimental ray tracing tool. WiSE is used to construct the channel response for MEAs operating at 1.9 GHz for two situations: (a) (16-16)-MEAs located inside an office building and (b) (4, 4)-MEAs located in an outdoor fixed wireless loop. We define effective degrees of freedom (EDOFs) as parallel spatial modes of transmission for an MEA. We quantify the increase in both the number of EDOFs and capacity with transmit power, received SNR, and antenna spacing. More EDOFs are present when receiving MEAs are physically closer to the transmitting MEA, regardless of the scattering effect.
