1. Making the leap I: Modelling the reconstructed lensing convergence PDF from cosmic shear with survey masks and systematics

Abstract

The last few years have seen the development of a promising theoretical framework for statistics of the cosmic large-scale structure -- the theory of large deviations (LDT) for modelling weak-lensing one-point statistics in the mildly non-linear regime. The goal of this series of papers is to make the leap and lay out the steps to perform an actual data analysis with this theoretical tool. Building upon the LDT framework, in this work (Paper I) we demonstrate how to accurately model the Probability Distribution Function (PDF) of a reconstructed Kaiser-Squires convergence field under a realistic mask, that of the third data release of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We also present how weak lensing systematics and higher-order lensing corrections due to intrinsic alignments, shear biases, photo-$z$ errors and baryonic feedback can be incorporated in the modelling of the reconstructed convergence PDF. In an upcoming work (Paper II) we will then demonstrate the robustness of our modelling through simulated likelihood analyses, the final step required before applying our method to actual data., Comment: 37 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables. Abstract

Key non-Gaussian properties of cosmological fields can be captured by their one-point statistics, providing a complement to two-point statistical measurements from power spectra or correlation functions. Large deviation theory can robustly predict the one-point statistics of cosmological density fields on mildly non-linear scales from first principles. It provides a direct prediction for the cumulant generating function (CGF) of such fields, from which a prediction for the more commonly used probability density function (PDF) is extracted through an inverse Laplace transform. For joint one-point statistics of multiple fields, the inverse Laplace transform rapidly becomes more cumbersome and computationally expensive. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that the weak lensing CGF itself can be used as an observable that captures an equal amount of cosmological information to the PDF. While we use the weak-lensing convergence field as a simplistic and instructive example, this work is intended as a first step towards a cosmological analysis based on large deviation theory in the context of a nulling framework, which excludes contributions from small scales to facilitate highly accurate theoretical predictions. Abstract

Detecting primordial non-Gaussianity on mildly non-linear scales requires precise modelling of late-time structure formation. Accurately predicting the impact of non-linear gravitational collapse, non-linear tracer bias and baryonic physics on the variance and higher order moments of the cosmic density field is challenging, as they strongly depend on the tails of the probability distribution function (PDF) of density fluctuations. A way around this problem is to directly analyse the bulk of the PDF instead. For this purpose we devise a new method to predict the impact of general non-Gaussian initial conditions on the late-time density PDF. With this formalism we show that - even when marginalizing over potential ignorance of the amplitude and slope of the non-linear power spectrum - an analysis of the PDF at mildly non-linear densities can measure the amplitude of different primordial bispectrum shapes to an accuracy of $\Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{loc}} = \pm 3.1\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{equi}} = \pm 10.0\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{ortho}} = \pm 17.0\ $. This assumes a joint analysis of the PDF on smoothing scales of $15$Mpc/$h$ and $30$Mpc/$h$ in a survey volume of $V=100(\mathrm{Gpc}/h)^3$ at $z=1$, analysing only densities of $\delta(15\mathrm{Mpc}/h) \in [-0.4, 0.5]$ ($\approx 87\%$ of probability) and $\delta(30\mathrm{Mpc}/h) \in [-0.3, 0.4]$ ($\approx 95\%$ of probability). Note that a formalism closely related to ours was already successfully applied to observational data \citep{Gruen2018, Friedrich2018}, demonstrating that the methodology developed here can indeed be carried over to real data analysis.

Abstract

The cosmic large-scale structure of our Universe is comprised of baryons and cold dark matter (CDM). Yet it is customary to treat these two components as a combined single-matter fluid with vanishing pressure, which is justified only for sufficiently large scales and late times. Here we go beyond the single-fluid approximation and develop the perturbation theory for two gravitationally coupled fluids while still assuming vanishing pressure. We mostly focus on perturbative expansions in powers of $D$ (or $D_+$), the linear structure growth of matter in a $��$CDM Universe with cosmological constant $��$. We derive in particular (1) explicit recursion relations for the two fluid densities, (2) complementary all-order results in the Lagrangian-coordinates approach, as well as (3) the associated component wavefunctions in a semi-classical approach to cosmic large-scale structure. This version: fixed author list; International audience; Our current understanding of the Universe is established through the pristine measurements of structure in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the distribution and shapes of galaxies tracing the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. One key ingredient that underlies cosmological observables is that the field that sources the observed structure is assumed to be initially Gaussian with high precision. Nevertheless, a minimal deviation from Gaussianityis perhaps the most robust theoretical prediction of models that explain the observed Universe; itis necessarily present even in the simplest scenarios. In addition, most inflationary models produce far higher levels of non-Gaussianity. Since non-Gaussianity directly probes the dynamics in the early Universe, a detection would present a monumental discovery in cosmology, providing clues about physics at energy scales as high as the GUT scale.

Abstract

The axion is a hypothetical, well-motivated dark-matter particle whose existence would explain the lack of charge-parity violation in the strong interaction. In addition to this original motivation, an `axiverse' of ultra-light axions (ULAs) with masses $10^{-33}\,{\rm eV}\lesssim m_{\rm a}\lesssim 10^{-10}\,{\rm eV}$ also emerges from string theory. Depending on the mass, such a ULA contributes to the dark-matter density, or alternatively, behaves like dark energy. At these masses, ULAs' classical wave-like properties are astronomically manifested, potentially mitigating observational tensions within the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm on local-group scales. ULAs also provide signatures on small scales such as suppression of structure, interference patterns and solitons to distinguish them from heavier dark matter candidates. Through their gravitational imprint, ULAs in the presently allowed parameter space furnish a host of observational tests to target in the next decade, altering standard predictions for microwave background anisotropies, galaxy clustering, Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption by neutral hydrogen along quasar sightlines, pulsar timing, and the black-hole mass spectrum., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, Astro2020 Decadal Survey science white paper

Abstract

Despite two decades of tremendous experimental and theoretical progress, the riddle of the accelerated expansion of the Universe remains to be solved. On the experimental side, our understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the major dark energy probes has evolved; here we summarize the major probes and their crucial challenges. On the theoretical side, the taxonomy of explanations for the accelerated expansion rate is better understood, providing clear guidance to the relevant observables. We argue that: i) improving statistical precision and systematic control by taking more data, supporting research efforts to address crucial challenges for each probe, using complementary methods, and relying on cross-correlations is well motivated; ii) blinding of analyses is difficult but ever more important; iii) studies of dark energy and modified gravity are related; and iv) it is crucial that R&D for a vibrant dark energy program in the 2030s be started now by supporting studies and technical R&D that will allow embryonic proposals to mature. Understanding dark energy, arguably the biggest unsolved mystery in both fundamental particle physics and cosmology, will remain one of the focal points of cosmology in the forthcoming decade., 5 pages + references; science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 decadal survey

Abstract

The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $��(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. Simultaneously, it can measure the fraction of Dark Energy at the percent level up to $z = 5$, thus serving as an unprecedented test of the standard model and opening up a tremendous discovery space., Science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

Abstract

Astrophysical observations currently provide the only robust, empirical measurements of dark matter. In the coming decade, astrophysical observations will guide other experimental efforts, while simultaneously probing unique regions of dark matter parameter space. This white paper summarizes astrophysical observations that can constrain the fundamental physics of dark matter in the era of LSST. We describe how astrophysical observations will inform our understanding of the fundamental properties of dark matter, such as particle mass, self-interaction strength, non-gravitational interactions with the Standard Model, and compact object abundances. Abstract

The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $\sigma(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. Abstract

Our current understanding of the Universe is established through the pristine measurements of structure in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the distribution and shapes of galaxies tracing the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. One key ingredient that underlies cosmological observables is that the field that sources the observed structure is assumed to be initially Gaussian with high precision. Nevertheless, a minimal deviation from Gaussianityis perhaps the most robust theoretical prediction of models that explain the observed Universe; itis necessarily present even in the simplest scenarios. In addition, most inflationary models produce far higher levels of non-Gaussianity. Abstract

The analytical formalism to obtain the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of spherically-averaged cosmic densities and velocity divergences in the mildly non-linear regime is presented. A large-deviation principle is applied to those cosmic fields assuming their most likely dynamics in spheres is set by the spherical collapse model. We validate our analytical results using state-of-the-art dark matter simulations with a phase-space resolved velocity field finding a 2% percent level agreement for a wide range of velocity divergences and densities in the mildly nonlinear regime (~10Mpc/h at redshift zero), usually inaccessible to perturbation theory. From the joint PDF of densities and velocity divergences measured in two concentric spheres, we extract with the same accuracy velocity profiles and conditional velocity PDF subject to a given over/under-density which are of interest to understand the non-linear evolution of velocity flows. Both PDFs are used to build a simple but accurate maximum likelihood estimators for the redshift evolution of the variance of both the density and velocity divergence fields, which have smaller relative errors than their sample variances when non-linearities appear. Given the dependence of the velocity divergence on the growth rate, there is a significant gain in using the full knowledge of both PDFs to derive constraints on the equation of state of dark energy. Abstract

We calculate the dark matter halo correlation function in redshift space using the Gaussian streaming model (GSM). To determine the scale dependent functions entering the streaming model we use local Lagrangian bias together with Convolution Lagrangian perturbation theory (CLPT) which constitutes an approximation to the Post-Zel'dovich approximation. On the basis of N-body simulations we demonstrate that a smoothing of the initial conditions with the Lagrangian radius improves the Zel'dovich approximation and its ability to predict the displacement field of proto-halos. Based on this observation we implement a "truncated" CLPT by smoothing the initial power spectrum and investigate the dependence of the streaming model ingredients on the smoothing scale. We find that the real space correlation functions of halos and their mean pairwise velocity are optimised if the coarse graining scale is chosen to be 1 Mpc/h at z=0, while the pairwise velocity dispersion is optimised if the smoothing scale is chosen to be the Lagrangian size of the halo. We compare theoretical results for the halo correlation function in redshift space to measurements within the Horizon Run 2 N-body simulation halo catalog. We find that this simple two-filter smoothing procedure in the spirit of the truncated Zel'dovich approximation significantly improves the GSM+CLPT prediction of the redshift space halo correlation function over the whole mass range from large galaxy to galaxy cluster-sized halos., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures

We investigate large-scale structure formation of collisionless dark matter in the phase space description based on the Vlasov equation whose nonlinearity is induced solely by gravitational interaction according to the Poisson equation. Determining the time-evolution of density and peculiar velocity demands solving the full Vlasov hierarchy for the moments of the phase space distribution function. In the presence of long-range interaction no consistent truncation of the hierarchy is known apart from the pressure- less fluid (dust) model which is incapable of describing virialization due to the occurrence of shell-crossing singularities and the inability to generate vorticity and higher cumulants like velocity dispersion. Our goal is to find a simple ansatz for the phase space distribution function that approximates the full Vlasov distribution function without pathologies in a controlled way and therefore can serve as theoretical N-body double and as a replacement for the dust model. We argue that the coarse-grained Wigner probability distribution obtained from a wave function fulfilling the Schr��dinger-Poisson equation (SPE) is the sought-after function. We show that its evolution equation approximates the Vlasov equation and therefore also the dust equations before shell-crossing, but cures the shell-crossing singularities and is able to describe regions of multi-streaming and virialization. This feature was already employed in simulations by Widrow & Kaiser (1993). The coarse-grained Wigner ansatz allows to calculate all higher moments from density and velocity analytically, thereby incorporating nonzero higher cumulants in a self-consistent manner. Abstract

Pinning down the total neutrino mass and the dark energy equation of state is a key aim for upcoming galaxy surveys. Weak lensing is a unique probe of the total matter distribution whose non-Gaussian statistics can be quantified by the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) of the lensing convergence. We calculate the convergence PDF on mildly non-linear scales from first principles using large-deviation statistics, accounting for dark energy and the total neutrino mass. For the first time, we comprehensively validate the cosmology-dependence of the convergence PDF model against large suites of simulated lensing maps, demonstrating its percent-level precision and accuracy. We show that fast simulation codes can provide highly accurate covariance matrices, which can be combined with the theoretical PDF model to perform forecasts and eliminate the need for relying on expensive N-body simulations. Our theoretical model allows us to perform the first forecast for the convergence PDF that varies the full set of $\Lambda$CDM parameters. Our Fisher forecasts establish that the constraining power of the convergence PDF compares favourably to the two-point correlation function for a Euclid-like survey area at a single source redshift. When combined with a CMB prior from Planck, the PDF constrains both the neutrino mass $M_\nu$ and the dark energy equation of state $w_0$ more strongly than the two-point correlation function., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Abstract

Since dark matter almost exclusively interacts gravitationally, the phase-space dynamics is described by the Vlasov-Poisson equation. A key characteristic is its infinite cumulant hierarchy, a tower of coupled evolution equations for the cumulants of the phase-space distribution. While on large scales the matter distribution is well described as a fluid and the hierarchy can be truncated, smaller scales are in the multi-stream regime in which all higher-order cumulants are sourced through nonlinear gravitational collapse. This regime is crucial for the formation of bound structures and the emergence of characteristic properties such as their density profiles. We present a novel closure strategy for the cumulant hierarchy that is inspired by finitely generated cumulants and hence beyond truncation. This constitutes a constructive approach for reducing nonlinear phase-space dynamics of Vlasov-Poisson to a closed system of equations in position space. Using this idea, we derive Schr\"odinger-Poisson as approximate quantal method for solving classical dynamics of Vlasov-Poisson with cold initial conditions. Our deduction complements the common reverse inference of the Schr\"odinger-Vlasov relation using a semi-classical limit of quantum mechanics and provides a clearer picture of the correspondence between classical and quantum dynamics. Abstract

Large deviation statistics is implemented to predict the statistics of cosmic densities in cylinders applicable to photometric surveys. It yields few percent accurate analytical predictions for the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) of densities in concentric or compensated cylinders; and also captures the density-dependence of their angular clustering (cylinder bias). All predictions are found to be in excellent agreement with the cosmological simulation Horizon Run 4 in the quasi-linear regime where standard perturbation theory normally breaks down. These results are combined with a simple local bias model that relates dark matter and tracer densities in cylinders and validated on simulated halo catalogues. This formalism can be used to probe cosmology with existing and upcoming photometric surveys like DES, Euclid or WFIRST containing billions of galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures, comments welcome
