This study presents brain electrophysiological characteristics of perspective-taking for blind individuals ver. sighted ones, aiming to extend our knowledge on social concept formation with visual sensory modality loss. A blind and a sighted group instructed to consider the moral dilemmas therein from a neutral (observer), a morally positive or a negative stance, after the auditory presentation of Aesop's fables. We recorded the basic emotions evoked by every stance in each fable, and the late positive potentials (LPP) component of Event-Related Potential detected with Continuous Wavelet Transform, believed to reflect the sustained attention and stimuli encoding processes. Blind participants demonstrated: i) significantly attenuated LPP amplitudes at distributed brain areas, particularly at leads T3, P4, O2, T6, Cz, Pz, CPz and CP4 (p values 0.026-0.003), ii) prolonged LPP latencies at parietal areas, at leads CP4 (p=0.009), Pz (p=0.019), and P4 (p=0.023), iii) shorter latencies at the frontal area (lead FPz, p=0.026) and iv) significantly shorter latencies at the right posterior centrotemporal area under the negative than the positive condition (lead C4, p=0.009). Both groups exhibited higher LPP amplitudes under the morally positive, and lower under the negative condition located at the parietal areas (P3, p=0.001 and CPz, p=0.013). The relationships between behavior and LPP activation conform to the proposed generation and modulation of LPP. Our findings suggest that the visually deprived cortex may become more responsive to processes associated with perspective-taking, possibly through compensatory plasticity enabling cross-modal reorganization. Thus, the study introduces a novel model for accessing the sustained attention and stimulus-encoding processes underlying perspective-taking. © 2013 IEEE.

Hoarding disorder is a debilitating condition that results from difficulty or inability to discard possessions and the need to save items and leads to cluttered living space. It impedes normal everyday functioning and causes significant distress and dysfunction. The aim of the current study was to validate the Greek version of the Saving Inventory-Revised (SI-R) in a non-clinical sample of 554 Greek adults. Factor structure and psychometric properties were investigated. Common exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to explore the factor structure of the data. A three-factor solution was emerged for the Greek SI-R Which appears to cover the clinical dimensions of the phenomenon and consists of clutter, difficulty discarding and acquisition dimensions. This finding is in accordance with the original English version as well as other adaptations of the instrument in other languages. Some items cross loaded but such findings of cross loading items are also reported in related literature. The Greek version of the SI-R exhibits satisfactory internal consistency and good test retest reliability (stability). The current study also aimed to gather evidence towards the convergent and discriminant validity of Greek SI-R. Findings showed no correlation with measurements of different constructs such as anxiety, depression and non-hoarding obsessive compulsive symptoms but also only partial correlation with measurements of relative clinical constructs, such as hoarding items in obsessive compulsive inventories. Current findings suggest that the Greek SI-R can be a useful tool in the detection and evaluation of hoarding symptoms in Greek population.

In the recent study by Verhoeven and Egger, 2015 and the recent letter to the editor by Boot et al. 2015 an emphasis is given to the best possible pharmacological treatment of 22q11-2 Deletion-Syndrome related psychoses. We would like to present the case of a 23-year old Cypriot patient with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome who fulfilled criteria for treatment resistant schizophrenia (TRS). He was sequentially treated with aripiprazole, risperidone, olanzapine, haloperidol and a combination treatment with olanzapine and haloperidol. Background The pretreatment neuropsychological profile of drug-resistant patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) referred for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may differ from that of their drug-respondent MDD counterparts. Such differences could help in identifying distinct MDD subtypes, thus offering insights into the neuropathology underlying differential treatment responses.Method Depressed patients with ECT referral (ECTs), depressed patients with no ECT referral (NECTs) and non-psychiatric Controls (matched groups, n=15) were assessed with memory and executive function tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB).Results ECTs scored significantly lower than NECTs in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE; p=0.01). Twenty-two patients with major depressive disorder, 11 of them with melancholic features, and 11 controls were investigated with CANTAB subtests focusing in visual memory/learning and executive functions. Melancholic patients per-formed worse than the other groups in all tasks and manifested a significant impairment in set shifting. The results are discussed in association with prefrontal dysfunction. Background: This study introduces a laboratory model of compulsive behavior based on persistence in the context of rewarded spatial alternation. Methods. Rats were screened for spontaneous persistence during T-maze reinforced alternation. Experiment 1: One high and one low spontaneous persistence group (n = 8) received 20 injections of fluoxetine, a matched pair saline, both followed by 4 days of meta-chloropbenylpiperazine (mCPP) challenge. Experiment 2.. Five matched groups of rats (n = 9) received pretreatment (20 injections) with fluoxetine, mCPP, desipramine, diazepam or saline, followed by 4 days of mCPP challenge (fluoxetine in mCPP group). After washout, animals received 2 days of naratriptan, followed by another 2-day mCPP challenge. Results: In both experiments mCPP significantly increased persistence in saline controls. Fluoxetine also acutely increased persistence scores: after a gradual return to baseline, these scores showed tolerance to mCPP. Experiment 1: This pattern was significant in high but not low initial persistence groups. Experiment 2: Fluoxetine and mCPP showed cross-tolerance. Neither desipramine nor diazepam protected against mCPP challenge. Persistence scores returned to baseline during washout and naratriptan and were thereafter increased by another mCPP challenge in all but the fluoxetine and mCPP groups, suggesting 5-HT2c receptor mediation. Conclusions. This model is based on spontaneous persistence behavior showing pharmacological responses concordant with those of compulsive symptomatology.
