Abstract

We carried out an experimental set-up for reading a hidden drawing under papyrus using an optical technique based on the speckle phenomenon that is observed when a rough surface is illuminated by laser light. We propose the use of several wavelengths of light illumination and adaptive algorithms to process the speckle images. We employ a set of filters to produce better discrimination of the results as visually judged. This approach is a cheap and relatively simple non-destructive and non-invasive procedure that could be extended to other painted objects or subsurface hidings of archaeological interest, as well as, to other dynamic speckle experiments., 18 pages

Abstract

Light from a rough sample surface illuminated with a laser consists of a speckle pattern. If the surface evolves with time, the pattern becomes dynamic, following the activity of the sample. This phenomenon is used both in research and in industry to monitor processes and systems that change with time. The measuring equipment generally includes high-performance CCD cameras and other expensive devices. Based on the same principle, here we describe a simplified approach where components and devices commonly available in undergraduate physics laboratories are instead used. The technique is described in detail, also reviewing the basic properties of speckle fields. Examples of the application are given, and suggestions for further investigation are provided.

6. Rugosímetros ópticos basados en la aberración cromática y esférica del sistema de enfoque

Abstract

Se presentan dos técnicas ópticas para la medida de rugosidades de superficies. En el primer caso, se utiliza luz blanca y el principio de operación está basado en la aberración cromática del sistema de enfoque. El segundo método emplea luz láser y se basa en la aberración esférica longitudinal del sistema de enfoque. Abstract

Background Other than aspirin, there are few oral antithrombotic treatments with proven efficacy in patients with acute coronary syndrome. In this report, we present the rationale, design and baseline characteristics of the Clopidogrel in Unstable angina to prevent Recurrent ischaemic Events (CURE) trial, which includes a meta-analysis of the effects of thienopyridines in patients with vascular disease. Methods and Results Combined data from randomized trials of thienopyrindines in patients with atherosclerotic disease demonstrated a 29% reduction in vascular events when compared with placebo/control (n=2392) (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.58-0.86, P=0.0006) and a 10% reduction in vascular events when compared with aspirin (n=22 254) (OR 0.91, 95% Cl 0.84-0.99, P=0.039). Similarly, randomized trials of aspirin plus thienopyridines in patients undergoing intracoronary stenting, demonstrated marked benefit of aspirin plus ticlopidine in reducing death or myocardial infarction compared with aspirin alone (OR 0.23, 95% CI 0.11-0.49, P=0.0001) or aspirin plus warfarin (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.33-0.78, P=0.002). Whether these benefits extend to the much larger population of patients with acute coronary syndrome is unknown. CURE is an international, randomized, double-blind trial, in which patients with acute coronary syndrome will be randomized to receive either a bolus dose of clopidogrel (300 mg) followed by 75 mg per day for 3-12 months, or matching placebo. Both groups will receive aspirin. The co-primary efficacy end-points of CURE are: (1) the composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction or stroke; and (2) the composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke or refractory ischaemia. CURE will recruit approximately 12 500 patients with acute coronary syndrome (from 28 countries) and its power to detect moderate treatment benefits will be in the region of 80-90%, while maintaining an overall type I error (a) of 0.05. The baseline characteristics of the study population are consistent with at least a moderate risk group of patients with acute coronary syndrome. Conclusions Randomized trials of thienopyridines in patients with vascular disease demonstrate that thienopyridines are effective in reducing vascular events when compared with placebo/control or aspirin, as well as when used in combination with aspirin in patients undergoing intracoronary stent implantation. The CURE trial is a large international study to determine if acute and longterm treatment with the combination of clopidogrel and aspirin is superior to aspirin alone in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Abstract

La holografía es una técnica corrientemente utilizada en el registro de imágenes tridimensionales de objetos que se encuentran tanto en reposo como en movimiento. Sin embargo, la realización de estereogramas por técnicas de Speckle, como en el propuesto en este trabajo, está justificada al tener en consideración el exceso de información normalmente presente en holografía, así como las limitaciones de la visión. La utilización de un láser de colorante pulsado coherente y de energía suficiente permite la obtención de estereograma de objetos en movimiento. El par estereográfico es logrado al registrar simultáneamente dos perspectivas levemente diferentes sobre una película. Mediante un sistema de polarizadores adecuadamente colocados y una pupila compuesta por dos sectores circulares se logra por una imágen formada por un registro de speckle modulados, que al ser iluminada en la reconstrucción, conservan una selectividad angular que permite visualizar en forma independiente ambas perspectivas de la imágen real Fil: Bolognini, N.. Abstract

Infective endocarditis caused by non-HACEK (species other than Haemophilus species, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, or Kingella species) gram-negative bacilli is rare, is poorly characterized, and is commonly considered to be primarily a disease of injection drug users.To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with non-HACEK gram-negative bacillus endocarditis in a large, international, contemporary cohort of patients.Observations from the International Collaboration on Infective Endocarditis Prospective Cohort Study (ICE-PCS) database.61 hospitals in 28 countries.Hospitalized patients with definite endocarditis.Characteristics of non-HACEK gram-negative bacillus endocarditis cases were described and compared with those due to other pathogens.Among the 2761 case-patients with definite endocarditis enrolled in ICE-PCS, 49 (1.8%) had endocarditis (20 native valve, 29 prosthetic valve or device) due to non-HACEK, gram-negative bacilli. Escherichia coli (14 patients [29%]) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (11 patients [22%]) were the most common pathogens. Most patients (57%) with non-HACEK gram-negative bacillus endocarditis had health care-associated infection, whereas injection drug use was rare (4%). Implanted endovascular devices were frequently associated with non-HACEK gram-negative bacillus endocarditis compared with other causes of endocarditis (29% vs. 11%; P0.001). The in-hospital mortality rate of patients with endocarditis due to non-HACEK gram-negative bacilli was high (24%) despite high rates of cardiac surgery (51%).Because of the small number of patients with non-HACEK gram-negative bacillus endocarditis in each treatment group and the lack of long-term follow-up, strong treatment recommendations are difficult to make.In this large, prospective, multinational cohort, more than one half of all cases of non-HACEK gram-negative bacillus endocarditis were associated with health care contact. Non-HACEK gram-negative bacillus endocarditis is not primarily a disease of injection drug users.

International audience; BACKGROUND: We sought to provide a contemporary picture of the presentation, etiology, and outcome of infective endocarditis (IE) in a large patient cohort from multiple locations worldwide. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of 2781 adults with definite IE who were admitted to 58 hospitals in 25 countries from June 1, 2000, through September 1, 2005.
