Earth-Surface Processes - Abstract

To assess efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics, and immunogenicity of pegloticase plus methotrexate (MTX) versus pegloticase plus placebo cotreatment for uncontrolled gout in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. This study included adults with uncontrolled gout, defined as serum urate ≥7 mg/dl, oral urate-lowering therapy failure or intolerance, and presence of ongoing gout symptoms including ≥1 tophus, ≥2 flares in the past 12 months, or gouty arthritis. Key exclusion criteria included MTX contraindication, current immunosuppressant use, G6PDH deficiency, and estimated glomerular filtration rate40 ml/minute/1.73 mA total of 152 patients were randomized, 100 to receive pegloticase plus MTX, 52 to receive pegloticase plus placebo. Significantly higher treatment response occurred during month 6 in the MTX group versus the placebo group (71.0% [71 of 100 patients] versus 38.5% [20 of 52 patients], respectively; between-group difference 32.3% [95% confidence interval 16.3%, 48.3%]) (P 0.0001 for between-group difference). During the first 6 months of pegloticase plus MTX or pegloticase plus placebo treatment, 78 (81.3%) of 96 MTX patients versus 47 (95.9%) of 49 placebo patients experienced ≥1 adverse event (AE), most commonly gout flare (64 [66.7%] of 96 MTX patients and 34 [69.4%] of 49 placebo patients). Reports of AEs and serious AEs were comparable between groups, but the infusion reaction rate was considerably lower with MTX cotherapy (4.2% [4 of 96 MTX patients, including 1 patient who had anaphylaxis]) than with placebo cotherapy (30.6% [15 of 49 placebo patients, 0 who had anaphylaxis]) (P 0.001). Antidrug antibody positivity was also lower in the MTX group.MTX cotherapy markedly increased pegloticase response rate over placebo (71.0% versus 38.5%) during month 6 with no new safety signals. These findings verify higher treatment response rate, lower infusion reaction incidence, and lower immunogenicity when pegloticase is coadministered with MTX.

Barium hydroxide was one of the most widely used inorganic materials to consolidate calcareous stones during the 19th and 20th. The consolidation process occurs through a carbonation reaction. Several researchers studied the consolidation mechanism; however, the results are sometimes in conflict. More experimental work using modern analytical techniques and a multi-analytical approach is necessary to shed light on the mechanisms involved. This research aims to validate the chemical composition of the developed secondary products and to evaluate the treatment’s effectiveness over time. Carrara marble and Vicenza white limestone were treated and subjected to natural, artificial, and biological weathering. Furthermore, only a few microsamples were collected from Venetian historical artifacts treated in the 1960s and 1970s. Microscopic observations, sponge tests, FTIR, SEM-EDX, and microbiological analyses investigated the stability of the treatment over time and ascertained the chemical composition of the acicular crystals developed from the carbonation reaction of barium hydroxide. The results prompted a number of considerations useful for future restorations and for developing innovative compounds for consolidation interventions.

The stability of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in a water-rich environment is a topic of significant importance, especially for adsorption and water purification applications. MIL-88A containing iron ions and fumaric acid ligands, was synthesized through a water-based viable strategy. The robustness of MIL-88A in aqueous solutions was studied experimentally, through evaluating the chemical, thermal, and hydrolytic stability of this compound by varying the conditions and properties of aqueous solutions. Different characterization techniques were employed to explore the features of the synthesized MIL-88A such as XRD, SEM, FTIR, TGA, UV–vis DRS, zeta potential, and MP-AES measurements. The electronic structure was studied on a model nanocrystal with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The MIL-88A structure was drastically affected in basic medium as confirmed by the characterization techniques used. MIL-88A became completely amorphous upon exposure to boiling water. The hydrolytic stability results showed that MIL-88A loses gradually its structural integrity in each water cycle.

The activity of MOF-5-based solids has been exploited in the simultaneous transesterification and esterification of acid vegetable oils. For this purpose, three different types of MOF-5 have been synthesized and characterized, and then tested in the above-mentioned reactions. It has been demonstrated that the “regular MOF-5” was a suitable catalyst for biodiesel synthesis from waste oil also, rich in FFA (Free Fatty Acids). Moreover, to identify the true structure that acts in the reactions and possible structural modifications due to the presence of alcohols, proper studies have been performed. The results have evidenced a distortion of the regular structure of MOF-5 due to the breakage of some zinc bonds between the cluster and organic framework.

Abstract This study aims to evaluate yoga as a resource for the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the context of Primary Health Care (PHC), considering the phenomenon of medicalization. To this end, an essay was conducted, based on the hermeneutic-philosophical approach, in which elements of the yoga tradition were placed in interface with biomedical rationality, the anticipation process and the discourse on risk factors, present in the current logic of primary prevention. It was observed that certain concepts of yoga are opposed to the anticipatory process, and the incorporation of these by the user can prevent the excessive medicalization of risk, generated due to expectations of control over future diseases and suffering. The results point out that the insertion of parameters, values and concepts of yoga within discussions in the PHC groups can contribute to the greater autonomy of users by expanding the current discourses on risk factors, with greater appreciation for the underlying psychological and emotional issues that underlie the development of CVD. As a conclusion, there is a need for future studies that investigate concepts present in the yoga tradition, not only the already known and well explored psychophysical techniques, for the primary prevention of CVD.

Geology - Abstract
Did exhumation of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks proceed at comparable rates in the Neoproterozoic and in modern collisional orogens? We address this question with a multimineral geochronological study of UHP rocks from the Gourma fold-and-thrust belt in Mali. Integrated petrology and zircon U-Pb geochronology reveal peak metamorphic conditions of 820−740 °C and 3.3−3.4 GPa at 611.7 ± 3.6 Ma, providing evidence for subduction of the passive margin of the West African craton to ∼125 km depth in the West Gondwana orogen. Rutile U-Pb cooling ages indicate further exhumation of the Gourma UHP unit to mid-crustal levels (∼35 km) at 601.7 ± 3.2 Ma. These two ages provide a time lag between peak conditions and exhumation to 35 km of 10 ± 3.1 m.y., constraining an average vertical exhumation rate of 0.9 ± 0.3 cm/yr. Our data indicate a fast exhumation rate for the oldest known UHP rocks, comparable to that reported for modern collisional orogens. We argue that exhumation of the deeply subducted UHP rocks along the West Gondwana orogen contributed to significant changes in the Neoproterozoic atmosphere and biosphere.

General Earth and Planetary Sciences ,General Environmental Science - Abstract

Objective The objective of this study was to develop a systematic review of the use of auriculotherapy (AT) in obesity to support an evidence-based recommendation guide with emphasis on its applicability in Primary Health Care (PHC). Method The systematic review covered 15 databases and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and included clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, among other criteria. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN50) was used to assess the quality of the selected studies. Results The search identified 3023 publications, of which 15 were selected for analysis. Of these 12 were randomized clinical trials and three were systematic reviews. The number of participants in the trials varied from 58 to 204, with an average of 85. Two reviews included 8 and 18 randomized clinical trials, one review included 12 randomized clinical trials and one prospective clinical cohort. The number of participants of the studies ranged from 24 to 200. Four randomized clinical trials obtained an acceptable quality assessment, the others being classified as low quality, with methodological limitations in randomization, concealment and blinding. The three systematic reviews were classified as high quality. The findings of the 12 selected randomized clinical trials corroborate the results of the three systematic reviews included, and allow us to safely recommend auriculotherapy as a complementary treatment for obesity that shows a positive effect especially on body mass index and body weight. The most used points in these studies were shenmen, stomach, endocrine and hunger, but the use of the mouth, spleen, small intestine, large intestine and Sanjiao points was also reported. Conclusions This systematic review makes it possible to provisionally conclude that auriculotherapy is effective in obesity care and therefore has the potential to be used as a complementary therapy in PHC.

- Abstract
Bryophytes, especially mosses, have received growing attention because of their environmental applications, such as biosorption and phytoremediation. In general, this group is known for its sensitivity to environmental changes and the presence of pollutants such as metals, metalloids, persistent organic pollutants (POP), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), components that are harmful to the environment and human health. Considering that bryophytes are cosmopolitan plants, the development of approaches employing them has great potential for use in different locations around the world. Given this, the present review seeks to evaluate the main aspects related to the environmental application of bryophytes in the removal of contaminants through biosorption and phytoremediation. For this purpose, the VOSviewer software was used in the elaboration of bibliometric maps, using information obtained from the Web of Science platform. The search related to the application of mosses in phytoremediation found 174 publications, the search related to the application of mosses in biosorption obtained 140 results. Of this total, it was observed that most studies were developed from 2005 onwards for both research areas, 2020 being the year with the largest number of studies using bryophytes in phytoremediation (n = 17), thus demonstrating that use this group is in growing development and has valuable application potential in the fields of biosorption and phytoremediation.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common malignant bone tumor in children and adolescents. In recent decades, OS treatment has reached a plateau and drug resistance is still a major challenge. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze the expression of the genes related to pharmacogenetics in OS. The expression of 32 target genes in 80 paired specimens (pre-chemotherapeutic primary tumor, post-chemotherapeutic primary tumor and pulmonary metastasis) obtained from 33 patients diagnosed with OS were analyzed by the real-time PCR methodology. As the calibrators (control), five normal bone specimens were used. The present study identified associations between the OS outcome and the expression of the genes TOP2A, DHFR, MTHFR, BCL2L1, CASP3, FASLG, GSTM3, SOD1, ABCC1, ABCC2, ABCC3, ABCC5, ABCC6, ABCC10, ABCC11, ABCG2, RALBP1, SLC19A1, SLC22A1, ERCC1 and MSH2. In addition, the expression of the ABCC10, GGH, GSTM3 and SLC22A1 genes were associated with the disease event, and the metastasis specimens showed a high expression profile of ABCC1, ABCC3 and ABCC4 genes and a low expression of SLC22A1 and ABCC10 genes, which is possibly an important factor for resistance in OS metastasis. Therefore, our findings may, in the future, contribute to clinical management as prognostic factors as well as possible therapeutic targets.

- Abstract
Overweight and obesity are pandemic problems, occurring in high-, middle-, and low-income countries (particularly in urban areas), in both sexes, and in all age groups. Obesity can cause changes in the levels of sex hormones, in the spermatogenic process, and in sperm maturation, leading to reduced sperm quality, oligospermia, damage to DNA integrity, affecting sperm motility and capacitation, and therefore interfering in the fertilization process and in the quality of the embryo. Moreover, the increase in adipose tissue may cause elevated concentrations of sex steroids, adipokines, and leptin, as well as the aromatization of androgens into estrogens, which may accelerate the onset of puberty and, subsequently, the seminal quality and homeostasis of sex hormones in adulthood. However, the literature is contradictory about the effects of obesity on the onset of puberty, sperm and male fertility.

The simulation of block or random ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) copolymerization with a deterministic model requires the solution of many thousands of differential and algebraic equations. This approach, therefore, is not practicable, requiring too long computer calculation time. The use of a stochastic model allows overcoming this drawback. In this work, a Monte Carlo based model has been developed considering, for a given substrate such as ethylene glycol, only the reaction of the overall consumption of the alkoxides. The addition of new units of EO or PO, respectively, to the hydroxyls of the substrate or the terminal hydroxyls of the growing chains is ruled by the stochastic probability of the two mentioned events. The developed model considers also the effect of the side reaction of PO conversion to allyl alcohol with the formation of new growing polymeric chains. To do the calculations a microscopic volume, assumed to be a well-mixed system, is considered containing about 5000 or a few more molecules, which is a number significant for statistical validity. Kinetic laws and related parameters have been estimated from data published in the literature. Examples of simulations of high-molecular-weight EO and PO homopolymers, of an EO-PO random copolymer, and a triblocks copolymer of the type (EO)a-(PO)b-(EO)a will be presented.

The global production of aquatic organisms has grown steadily in recent decades. This increase in production results in high volumes of by-products and waste, generally considered to be of low commercial value and part of them are consequently discarded in landfills or in the sea, causing serious environmental problems when not used. Currently, a large part of the reused aquaculture waste is destined for the feed industry. This generally undervalued waste presents an important source of bioactive compounds in its composition, such as: amino acids, carotenoids, chitin and its derivatives, fatty acids and minerals. These compounds are capable of offering numerous benefits due to their bioactive properties. However, the applicability of these compounds may be opportune in several other sectors. This review describes studies that seek to obtain and apply bioactive compounds from different sources of aquaculture waste, thus adding commercial value to these underutilized biomasses.HIGHLIGHTSVolume of aquaculture industrial waste from crustaceans and mollusks.Quantity and quality of bioactive components in aquaculture waste.Applications of recovered proteins, lipids, chitin, carotenoids and minerals.Future prospects for the destination of aquaculture waste.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a malignant bone tumor, with a peak of incidence in the second decade of life and possibly associated with the presence of germline mutations. Besides, clinicians have pointed to a second, rarer group of patients that develops OS before 10 years old. Here we access, through next-generation sequencing (NGS) strategy, the genetic alterations present in OS and blood samples from patients diagnosed before and during the second decade of life. A custom NGS panel, designed for the main alterations described in childhood and adolescence neoplasms, named Oncomine Childhood Cancer Research Assay (OCCRA©), was used. Of all 84 OS samples investigated, 42 (50%) presented some somatic variant, with TP53, MYC, CDK4, RB1 and PDGFRA genes harboring the most observed genetic variants. MYC CNVs were more frequent in tumors from patients diagnosed before 10 years old (X21= 5.18, p = 0.023). Additionally, patients diagnosed during the second decade of life presented a higher percentage of somatic and germline variants. Germline variants in TP53 and RB1 were found in 5 of the 11 (45.5%) patients analyzed. Clinical variables and tumor histopathological characteristics were also collected and correlated with our molecular findings.

- Abstract
In the frame of HYPERION EU project, aimed to develop a Decision Support System to improve resilience and sustainable reconstruction of historic areas against climate change and extreme events, Venice stands for its urban and architectonic complexity and richness. In this system, the mapping of the ornamental stones and their deterioration morphologies of the Venice Clock Tower (Torre dell’Orologio) façade acts as a milestone on which building the knowledge-acquisition process on stone artefacts and their decay products. The Clock Tower is an early Renaissance building (1499) in Lombardesque stile standing over the entrance to the Mercerie on the northern side of the St. Mark square. Detailed surveys and mapping of both building materials (mainly stones) and deterioration morphologies were carried out, the latter following the weathering forms glossary, coupled an evaluation of their intensity. The data output consists of several monothematic maps, which can be separately handled, each one focusing on exact lithology or specific deterioration aspects. Moreover, a simple approach to graphically summarize the total state of deterioration of the building is here proposed in the form of a Total Deterioration Index (TDI) and its representation. The stones used in the façade are regional (Ammonitico Rosso and Scaglia Rossa) and extra-regional limestones (Istrian Stone), as well as Mediterranean white and coloured marbles and stones already used in antiquity (i.e. Fior di Pesco or marmor chalcidicum, Porfido rosso anticoor lapis porphyrites a volcanite from the Egyptian Eastern Desert, Proconnesian marble from the Microasiatic Marmara island, Pavonazzetto toscano and white Carrara marbles from Italian Apuan Alps). Their most frequent forms of deterioration detected are black crusts, patinas, discoloration and patterns linked to erosion processes. The interrelation of different mappings allowed some useful considerations about differences in the effectiveness of maintenance procedures between public and private management of the monument.

shear zone reactivation ,ductile-brittle transition ,structural inheritance ,low-T thermochronology ,Brasiliano/Pan-African orogenic cycle - Abstract
The reactivation of shear zones under brittle conditions during exhumation due to extensional collapse of the thickened continental crust is a common feature of post-collisional settings. New illite K-Ar analyses and (U-Th)/He data help establish the timing of exhumation and residual deformation during the final stages of orogenic activity in the Kaoko Belt, NW Namibia. Dating of clay-sized white mica from fractionated samples can be used to estimate late-stage deformation in shear zones and constrain the transition from the ductile to the brittle regime. XRD characterization of the dated material indicates crystallization under epizonal conditions (>300°C), which, together with the lack of correlations with age in fractionated samples are suggestive of protracted mineral growth. This supports the interpretation that K-Ar ages at 510-480 Ma in the analyzed samples set a maximum age for the end of ductile activity in the Kaoko Belt, after which brittle faulting is interpreted to have been the predominant style of deformation. This is in accordance with zircon thermochronological data, which predominantly record fast cooling towards temperatures below 200°C shortly thereafter. When compared with equivalent data in South America, the new results reveal that, while the peak orogenic stage of the Dom Feliciano Belt (650-570) took place many tens of Myr earlier than in the Kaoko Belt (580-550 Ma), the transition from ductile to brittle deformation (535-465 Ma and 510-480 Ma, respectively) and rapid exhumation into upper crust conditions (550-400 Ma and 500-350 Ma, respectively) has much more significant overlaps. This observation suggests that, with the progression of the main deformation front from present- day South America to Africa at the time of the collisional process in the Kaoko Belt, the late-stage deformation and eventual post-orogenic exhumation of the Dom Feliciano Belt may have been controlled by the far-field tectonic influence of the continuing orogenic activity to the West. The late stages of the Kaoko Belt, on its turn, are also influenced by a continuation of the progressive migration of the orogenic front towards the Damara Belt, thus highlighting the interconnected character of deformation and exhumation within the entire orogenic system., 4° Encontro dos Pesquisadores de Pós-Doutorado do IGc/USP, Instituto de Geociências da Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brasil, 29 e 30 de novembro de 2022.

Clonal Eucalyptus propagation is essential for various industry sectors. It requires cuttings to successfully develop adventitious roots (ARs). Environmental conditions are influential on AR development and may be altered to modulate the productivity of hard-to-root clones. The current knowledge gap in research on the physiological patterns underlying commercial-scale propagation results hinders the design of novel strategies. This study aimed to identify patterns of variation in AR-relevant parameters in contrasting seasons and species with distinct rooting performances. E. dunnii and E. ×urograndis (hard- (hardR) and easy-to-root (easyR), respectively) mini-stumps were subjected to light modulation treatments and to mini-tunnel use (MT) for a year. The treatment impact on the branching and rooting rates was recorded. The carbohydrate content, AR-related gene expression, and mineral nutrition profiles of cuttings from the control (Ctrl) and treated mini-stumps were analyzed. Light treatments were often detrimental to overall productivity, while MTs had a positive effect during summer, when it altered the cutting leaf nutrient profiles. Species and seasonality played large roles in all the assessed parameters. E. ×urograndis was particularly susceptible to seasonality, and its overall superior performance correlated with changes in its gene expression profile from excision to AR formation. These patterns indicate fundamental differences between easyR and hardR clones that contribute to the design of data-driven management strategies aiming to enhance propagation protocols.

Não recebi financiamento Education is an institutionalized social practice, which the State has the duty to guarantee and promote its management. In this way, it is necessary to understand that it is part of a system – capitalism – and therefore undergoes changes according to the need to maintain this system, the economic and ideological interests of the ruling class. The changes that are promoted in the educational system occur through social policies, which have the function of organizing rights and duties of the subjects inserted there. Inclusion is part of these social promotion policies, aiming to alleviate inequalities, whether those arising from some type of disability, or due to the need for historical retraction, in order to make them actively part of society. However, the ways in which it occurs perversely include people with special educational needs, as it guarantees access and basic conditions in line with the law, but not effective permanence. That way, our objective is to analyze what was produced from public policies in the period from 1990 to 2020, in the Brazilian educational system at the federal level, in order to understand whether these regulations guarantee what is proposed in a more humanizing and inclusive education, as well as their intentions when actually applied. This work is intended to result not only in an analysis of these laws from a Marxist perspective, but also with the intention of producing a survey of legal formulations at the federal level for further consultation.

A study was conducted to assess the chemical composition and apparent metabolizable energy (AME), nitrogen-corrected AME (AMEn), and their respective coefficients of dry brewery residue (DBR) for broilers. A second study was conducted to evaluate the increasing inclusions of DBR in broiler diets and its effects on growth performance, carcass traits, blood metabolites, and meat quality. In the first trial (metabolism assay), a total of 250 male broilers were assigned to 5 diets (0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 g DBR/kg) composed by 5 replications with 10 animals per cage in a completely randomized design in the period from days 11 to 21. There was an increasing linear effect for AME, AMEn, metabolizable coefficient of gross energy (MCGE), and MCGE corrected for N (MCGEn). In the second experiment, a total of 840 one-day-old male broiler chickens were assigned to 6 treatments (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 g DBR/kg) with 7 replications and 20 animals per pen, from days 0 to 42. Growth performance was determined at days 21 and 42. There was an increasing linear effect for weight gain in the period from days 0 to 21 and for feed intake from days 0 to 42. A linear decreasing effect was observed at day 21 for cholesterol and quadratic effect for uric acid (UA), aspartate aminotransferase, and albumin. At day 42, there was a quadratic effect for UA and creatinine. At day 21, an increasing linear effect was observed for protein deposition rate. In conclusion, the inclusion of DBR up to 100 g/kg improved WG in the starter phase and did not negatively affect the productive parameters of broilers from days 0 to 42.
