Summary: Hormonal and ultrastructural examinations of the testis were performed in an XX-male. Plasma levels of testosterone and prolactin were within the normal range, but FSH and LH were higher than the normal range. The response of testosterone to the administration of HCG is within the normal range. In the interstitium marked hyperplasia of Leydig cells was observed. The presence of paracrystalline inclusions and the absence of Reinke's crystals were representative changes in Leydig cells. Seminiferous tubules were filled with Sertoli cells and spermatogenesis was completely abolished. Intermediate filaments were abundant and annulate lamellae were absent in Sertoli cells. Zusammenfassung: Bei einem XX-Mann wurden Hormonanalysen und eine Ultrastruk-tur-Untersuchung des Hodengewebes durchgefuhrt. Wahrend die Testosteron- und Prolak-tin-Werte normal ausfielen, lagen die Werte fur FSH und LH im erhohten Bereich. Nach HCG-Stimulierung ergab sich eine normale Testosteronreaktion. Histologisch lag eine deut-liche Leydig-Zell-Hyperplasie vor. Der Nachweis parakristalliner Einschlusse und das Feh-len von Reinke-Kristallen waren reprasentative Veranderungen in den Leydig-Zellen. Die Tubuli seminiferi waren mit Sertolizellen angefullt und die Spermatogenese fehlte voll-standig. Intermediare Filamente waren reichlich vorhanden und geringelte Lamellen fehl-ten in den Sertolizellen.

1. To improve the production of chimeras, the distribution of donor blastodermal cells after transferring into recipient embryos was examined morphologically. 2. Donor blastodermal cells were distributed near the site of injection in the epiblast and in the subgerminal cavity and yolk. Some filled the hole made by the micropipette and were distributed outside the epiblast. Many were buried in yolk. In some cases, more donor blastodermal cells were located in the yolk than in the subgerminal cavity and some were located 800 μm below the under‐surface of the epiblast. 3. It is recommended that injection should be as shallow as possible to increase the proportion of chimeras produced, and that some means is needed to prevent blastodermal cells from escaping from the hole produced by injection.

We extend the f (R) gravity action by including a generic dependence upon the Weyl tensor, and further generalize it to supergravity by using the super-curvature R and super-Weyl W chiral superfields in N = 1 chiral curved superspace. We argue that our (super)gravitational actions are the meaningful extensions of the phenomenological f(R) gravity and its locally supersymmetric generalization towards their UV completion and their embedding into superstring theories. The proposed actions can be used for study of cosmological perturbations and gravitational instabilities due to a nonvanishing Weyl tensor in gravity and supergravity.

Before and after androgen replacement therapy prostatic and seminovesicular volume was estimated by means of transrectal ultrasonography in 13 hypogonadal men. Volume of the prostate (p less than 0.001) and seminal vesicles (p less than 0.01) significantly increased after treatment with testosterone enanthate. However, the plasma level of testosterone remained abnormally low. These results indicate that volume determination of the prostate and seminal vesicles by means of transrectal ultrasonography is suitable for evaluating the adequacy of androgen replacement therapy in male hypogonadism.

A new structure thermal vacuum sensor with two pn junction diodes, Th-A and Th-B, as a high sensitive temperature sensor working like a thermistor and a micro heater formed on a micro air‒bridge is proposed. The micro air‒bridge is separated into two regions of A and B. The Th-A measures the temperature of the micro-heater formed on the region A and the Th-B does that of the region B which is connected to the micro-heater with thermal resistance. The diode thermistor, Th-C, formed on the SOI substrate is provided to measure the ambient temperature Tc. Vacuum pressure is measured based on heat dissipation change from the heated micro air‒bridge to ambient gas. It is demonstrated that this sensor will expand the measuring vacuum range into about two orders or more wider range (2x10-3-1x105 Pa) than the traditional thermal vacuum sensor, such as Pirani vacuum sensor, and has very fast response and low power consumption.

A rat IgG2a monoclonal antibody against a stage-specific fetal glycoprotein with a molecular mass of 68 kDa (FGP68) was produced and applied to paraffin sections. This monoclonal antibody was used to compare the expression of FGP68 with that of both alphafetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in 75 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). Seventy-five primary HCCs from patients aged 36 to 77 years were examined. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections were used for immunohistochemical analyses. Histologically, 6 cases of HCC were classified as type I according to the Edmondson and Steiner criteria, 57 cases as type II, and 12 cases as type III. The cancer tissues showed positive reactions with the antibody against FGP68. Approximately one-third of the HCCs (26/75) contained tumor cells that expressed FGP68 - (21/57 for Edmondson and Steiner type II; 4/12 for type III; and 1/6 for type I) - and positive immunoreactivity was observed in the cytoplasm of the cancer cells. Twenty-five of the 75 HCCs had tumor cells that expressed AFP and there was a significant correlation between FGP68 expression and AFP expression. Twenty-three of the 75 HCCs had tumor cells that expressed CEA and there was no significant correlation between FGP68 expression and CEA expression. No positive reactions for FGP68, AFP and CEA were observed in samples of non-neoplastic liver tissues. Based on the possibility that stage-specific FGP68 plays an important role in liver embryogenesis, FGP68- expressing tumor cells might ontogenetically revert to more primitive cells.

Midkine (MK) is a heparin-binding growth factor whose gene has been identified in embryonal carcinoma cells in early stages of retinoic acid-induced differentiation. In the present study, we investigated the developmental localization of truncated MK protein in human bile ducts. Thirty specimens of the livers from 25 fetuses (from 9 to 40 gestational weeks) and from five neonates less than 4 weeks old were examined. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed using a mouse IgG2b monoclonal antibody against recombinanttruncated MK. Truncated MK was expressed moderately in the fetal liver from 9 to 15 gestational weeks. The immunoreactivities were found in the primitive hepatocytes, ductal plates, migrating biliary cells and immature bile ducts. The reaction products were localized in the cytoplasm heterogeneously. The intensity of immunostaining was weak from 15 gestational weeks to 26 gestational weeks. After 27 gestational weeks, truncated MK was not detected in the fetal livers. It was suggested that primitive hepatocytes, ductal plates and immature bile ducts produced truncated MK transiently during human bile ducts development

Seven dural arteriovenous fistulas were successfully embolized with mechanical detachable coils. Two lesions were located in the transverse-sigmoid sinus, four in the cavernous sinus, and one in the marginal sinus. All lesions were completely occluded on postembolization angiography. No recurrent symptoms appeared during a mean follow-up period of 11 months. Owing to the length and retrievability of the mechanical detachable coils, embolization was quicker and safer, and coils were packed more densely, than is possible with conventional coils. Coil migration was avoided because coils of the appropriate size were chosen before they were placed.

Phenotypic alterations of biliary epithelial cells such as changes in intermediate filament composition and presence of carbohydrate residues, occur during the development of intrahepatic bile ducts. In this study, we examined the expression of MUC1, MUC2, MUC3, and MUC5/6 apomucins (mucin core proteins) by immunohistochemical means in the human intrahepatic bile duct during its development and maturation. In the fetal liver, new bile ducts in the portal tracts, either at the hilar level (corresponding to the large bile ducts) or peripheral level (corresponding to the small bile ducts), frequently expressed MUC1 apomucin at their luminal surface. Ductal plates also focally expressed MUC1 apomucin. By contrast, in the postnatal liver, the biliary epithelial cells of intrahepatic large bile ducts constantly expressed MUC3 apomucin, whereas those of small bile ducts did not. MUC2 and MUC5/6 apomucins were absent in the intrahepatic biliary elements of the fetal as well as postnatal livers. These data suggest that the biliary epithelial cells switch MUC1 apomucin expression before birth to that of MUC3 after birth. This characteristic transition may be similar to the changes in the hepatocellular expression of alpha-fetoprotein and albumin during the perinatal period.

We investigated apoptosis by nick end labeling and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins by immunohistochemistry in fetal development of human intrahepatic bile ducts and hepatocytes. During intrahepatic bile duct development, apoptosis was present at all stages, and its positive ratio was high in the remodeling ductal plate, moderate in the ductal plate, and relatively low in remodeled ducts. The cell proliferative activity as determined by proliferating cell nuclear antigen was also high in the remodeling ductal plate, and relatively low in the ductal plate and remodeled ducts. fas antigen and c-myc protein were constantly positive in the ductal plate, remodeling ductal plate and remodeled ducts. Bcl-2 protein was negative or faintly positive in the ductal plate and remodeling ductal plate, but was apparently positive in remodeled ducts. Lewisy as detected by the BM-1 antibody was present in the ductal plate, remodeling ductal plate, and remodeled ducts. p53 protein was not found in any cell types in the liver development. During hepatocyte development, many apoptotic and proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive hepatocytes were noted. The developing hepatocytes expressed c-myc protein and fas antigen. Bcl-2 protein and Lewisy antigen were also weakly positive in the developing hepatocytes. These findings showed that balanced cell proliferation and apoptosis are involved in the normal development of intrahepatic bile ducts and hepatocytes, and suggest that c-myc protein, fas antigen, Bcl-2 protein, and Lewisy antigen modulate apoptosis of fetal intrahepatic biliary cells and hepatocytes, probably by stimulative (c-myc protein and fas and Lewisy antigens) or inhibitory (Bcl-2 protein) effects.

Hypospadias can be categorized as glandular, penile, scrotal or perineal hypospadias. Diversified surgical procedures have been devised for the reparation of this congenital anomaly. The surgical method consists of 3 chief parts: avoidance of fistula formation, resection of the chordee and construction of the distal urethra. Infrequently a fistula following operation in this disease can be cured by urethral drainage, but in the majority of cases surgical repair is indispensable. Subsequently operative or postoperative complications must be decreased. The technical performance and accompanying problems for these points in the management of hypospadias are described.

Volume of prostate and seminal vesicles was measured in patients with Klinefelter's syndrome by means of transrectal ultrasonography before and after testosterone replacement therapy. Continuous suppression of plasma gonadotropin levels was not observed, and plasma levels of testosterone did not maintain the normal range. However, volume of prostate (p less than 0.001) and seminal vesicles (p less than 0.05) increased significantly after testosterone replacement therapy. Volume determination of prostate and seminal vesicles by means of transrectal ultrasonography is an available parameter for evaluating the adequacy of testosterone replacement therapy in Klinefelter's syndrome.

Hormonal studies were performed in patients of Klinefelter's syndrome with and without testicular epidermoid cyst. Mean levels of plasma gonadotropins were elevated above normal ranges. The mean testosterone level in plasma was abnormally low. The mean prolactin level in plasma was within the normal limit. However, mean plasma levels of these hormones were not significantly different between the two groups. The administration of LH-RH resulted in low response of plasma gonadotropins. The response of plasma testosterone to the administration of hCG was also abnormally low. However, in the LH-RH and hCG tests there were no significant differences between the two groups. These data suggested that the hormonal disturbance in Klinefelter's syndrome is unrelated to the occurrence of testicular epidermoid cyst.
