One of the big environmental problems in today’s world is dye-contaminated toxic waste. Peroxidase is known as highly efficient for the degradation of various pollutants, including dyes. Environmental contamination caused by the discharge of dyes into water bodies is an onerous challenge that poses both human and ecological hazards. In the current studies, biocatalysts used for enzyme decolorization (1847 Colafx Blue P3R and 621 Colafx Blue) are regarded as an eco-friendly method utilizing commonly available low-cost material lemon peels (Citruslimon peroxidase). Peroxidase was extracted in a phosphate buffer of pH 7.0 and partially purified by 20–80% ammonium sulfate precipitation technique from Citruslimon peels. The soluble enzyme was characterized in terms of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. The values of Km and Vmax (23.16 and 204.08 μmol/ml/min) were determined, respectively. The enzyme showed maximum activity at pH 5.0 and a temperature of 55 °C. Citruslimon efficiently degraded 1847 Colafx Blue P3R and 621 Colafx Blue R dyes with maximum degradation of 83 and 99%, respectively, with an initial dye concentration of 200 ppm at pH 4 and 35 °C temperature within 5–10 min of incubation time. The effect of the redox mediator on the degradation process was examined. Results showed that the peroxidase HOBT system efficiently enhanced the degradation of dyes from water. Hence, Citruslimon peroxidase is an efficient biocatalyst for the treatment of effluents.

This paper discusses the properties of metal oxide/biochar systems for use in wastewater treatment. Titanium, zinc, and iron compounds are most often combined with biochar; therefore, combinations of their oxides with biochar are the focus of this review. The first part of this paper presents the most important information about biochar, including its advantages, disadvantages, and possible modification, emphasizing the incorporation of inorganic oxides into its structure. In the next four sections, systems of biochar combined with TiO2, ZnO, Fe3O4, and other metal oxides are discussed in detail. In the next to last section probable degradation mechanisms are discussed. Literature studies revealed that the dispersion of a metal oxide in a carbonaceous matrix causes the creation or enhancement of surface properties and catalytic or, in some cases, magnetic activity. Addition of metallic species into biochars increases their weight, facilitating their separation by enabling the sedimentation process and thus facilitating the recovery of the materials from the water medium after the purification process. Therefore, materials based on the combination of inorganic oxide and biochar reveal a wide range of possibilities for environmental applications in aquatic media purification.

Purpose of Review Heavy and toxic metals are becoming more prevalent in the water sources of the globe, which has detrimental repercussions for both human health and the health of ecosystems. The summary of recent findings on treatment possibilities of toxic metal species by nanomaterials should facilitate the development of more advanced techniques of their removal. Recent Findings The high concentrations of chromium, mercury, and arsenic identified in wastewater cause a hazard to human health. There is a wide variety of nanoadsorbents and nanophotocatalysts used for heavy/hazardous metal removal. Recent research has resulted in the production of advanced nanostructures that exhibit extraordinary heavy/hazardous metal adsorption effectiveness and photocatalytic diminution of metal ions. These nanostructures have physically and chemically tunable features. Summary In this review article, the use of carbon-based nanomaterials, polymer-based nanomaterials, and semiconductor-based nanomaterials are extensively discussed to remove mercury, chromium, and arsenic ions from wastewater by the adsorption process. Advanced nanomaterials involved in photocatalytic reduction are also comprehensively discussed.

γ-Alumina with incorporated metal oxide species (including Fe, Cu, Zn, Bi, and Ga) was synthesized by liquid-assisted grinding—mechanochemical synthesis, applying boehmite as the alumina precursor and suitable metal salts. Various contents of metal elements (5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, and 20 wt.%) were used to tune the composition of the resulting hybrid materials. The different milling time was tested to find the most suitable procedure that allowed the preparation of porous alumina incorporated with selected metal oxide species. The block copolymer, Pluronic P123, was used as a pore-generating agent. Commercial γ−alumina (SBET = 96 m2·g−1), and the sample fabricated after two hours of initial grinding of boehmite (SBET = 266 m2·g−1), were used as references. Analysis of another sample of γ-alumina prepared within 3 h of one-pot milling revealed a higher surface area (SBET = 320 m2·g−1) that did not increase with a further increase in the milling time. So, three hours of grinding time were set as optimal for this material. The synthesized samples were characterized by low-temperature N2 sorption, TGA/DTG, XRD, TEM, EDX, elemental mapping, and XRF techniques. The higher loading of metal oxide into the alumina structure was confirmed by the higher intensity of the XRF peaks. Samples synthesized with the lowest metal oxide content (5 wt.%) were tested for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 (NH3-SCR). Among all tested samples, besides pristine Al2O3 and alumina incorporated with gallium oxide, the increase in reaction temperature accelerated the NO conversion. The highest NO conversion rate was observed for Fe2O3-incorporated alumina (70%) at 450 °C and CuO-incorporated alumina (71%) at 300 °C. The CO2 capture was also studied for synthesized samples and the sample of alumina with incorporated Bi2O3 (10 wt.%) gave the best result (1.16 mmol·g−1) at 25 °C, while alumina alone could adsorb only 0.85 mmol·g−1 of CO2. Furthermore, the synthesized samples were tested for antimicrobial properties and found to be quite active against Gram-negative bacteria, P. aeruginosa (PA). The measured Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values for the alumina samples with incorporated Fe, Cu, and Bi oxide (10 wt.%) were found to be 4 µg·mL−1, while 8 µg·mL−1 was obtained for pure alumina.

The paper presents preliminary application studies of the innovative TiO2-SiO2/ POSS filler as a potential low-density polyethylene modifier. It was found that the addition of the filler increases the stiffness and hardness of the composite and slightly changes the intensity of its color.

A mathematical description of the thermal degradation of spongin-based scaffolds is given. The Arrhenius integral was evaluated using the inverse problem approach, in which the unknown values were the activation energy EA, the pre-exponential factor A, and the model function f(α) characterizing the physical process. The form of f(α) was determined and the values of the parameters EA, A and TS were evaluated in detail. Moreover, the function f(α) assessed in this study was compared with classical solid-state model functions. Finally, the mean square minimization approach was used to solve the inverse problem with unknown function f(α) and pre-exponential constant A. Likewise, the approximation of f(α) with 6th- and 7th-degree polynomials was used to obtain numerical values of EA and A. This study evaluated the inverse problem approach for the Arrhenius equation. These investigations provide new insight into the description of the thermal degradation of spongin-based scaffolds.

Novel alumina-based materials enriched with vanadia and lanthana were successfully synthesized via in situ modification using a mechanochemical method, and were applied in ammonia-induced selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (SCR process). The synthesis was optimized in terms of the ball milling time (3 or 5 h), vanadium content (0.5, 1 or 2 wt% in the final product), and lanthanum content (0.5 or 1 wt% in the final product). Vanadium (V) oxide was immobilized on an alumina support to provide catalytic activity, while lanthana was introduced to increase the affinity of nitrogen oxides and create more active adsorption sites. Mechanochemical synthesis successfully produced mesoporous materials with a large specific surface area of 279–337 m2/g and a wide electrokinetic potential range from 60 to (− 40) mV. Catalytic tests showed that the incorporation of vanadia resulted in a very large improvement in catalytic performance compared with pristine alumina, increasing its efficiency from 14 to 63% at 400 °C. The best SCR performance, a 75% nitrogen oxide conversion rate at a temperature of 450 °C, was obtained for alumina enriched with 2 and 0.5 wt% of vanadium and lanthanum, respectively, which may be considered as a promising result.

Enzymatic conversion of pharmaceutically active ingredients (API), using immobilized enzymes should be considered as a promising industrial tool due to improved reusability and stability of the biocatalysts at harsh process conditions. Therefore, in this study horseradish peroxidase was immobilized into sodium alginate capsules and then trapped into poly(vinyl chloride) electrospun fibers to provide additional enzyme stabilization and protection against the negative effect of harsh process conditions. Due to encapsulation immobilization, 100% of immobilization yield was achieved leading to loading of 25 μg of enzyme in 1 mg of the support. Immobilized in such a way, enzyme showed over 80% activity retention. Further, only slight changes in kinetic parameters of free (Km = 1.54 mM) and immobilized horseradish peroxidase (Km = 1.83 mM) were noticed, indicating retention of high catalytic properties and high substrate affinity by encapsulated biocatalyst. Encapsulated horseradish peroxidase was tested in biodegradation of two frequently occurring in wastewater API, sulfamethoxazole (antibiotic) and carbamazepine (anticonvulsant). Over 80% of both pharmaceutics was removed by immobilized enzyme after 24 h of the process from the solution at a concentration of 1 mg/L, under optimal conditions, which were found to be pH 7, temperature 25 °C and 2 mM of H2O2. However, even from 10 mg/L solutions, it was possible to remove over 40% of both pharmaceuticals. Finally, the reusability and storage stability study of immobilized horseradish peroxidase showed retention of over 60% of initial activity after 20 days of storage at 4 °C and after 10 repeated catalytic cycles, indicating great practical application potential. By contrast, the free enzyme showed less than 20% of its initial activity after 20 days of storage and exhibited no recycling potential.

Biopolymer-based particles may be prepared using a soft-template method. Surfactants are among the most popular soft templates, but synthetic surfactants may be toxic or hazardous for humans and the environment. In this research, for the first time, natural surfactants were used to prepare spherical and doughnut-like particles. Two different powder types were prepared with the use of kraft lignin and natural extracts, which were derived from Saponaria officinalis L. and soap nuts of the Sapindus mukorossi tree, which contain saponins as surface active agents. A detailed characterization of the synthesized bio-based spheres was made with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, dispersion analysis (PSD, PdI), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, determination of porous structure parameters (low-temperature N2 sorption), elemental analysis (EA) and thermal stability analysis (TGA/DTG). Moreover, their sorption abilities with respect to pharmaceutically active cetirizine dihydrochloride (as reference compound) was tested. The adsorption efficiency around 90% for both materials was observed at pH 6.2 with the concentration of 10 mg/L of an active compound. Moreover, the equilibrium was reached after 240 min and it was concluded, that material prepared with the use of Sapindus mukorossi extract is a more efficient sorbent. The use of natural precursors may reduce environmental hazards and unnecessary waste, and the prepared particles may find future applications as novel eco-friendly materials, for example as adsorbents of harmful substances and in enzyme immobilization.

To meet the current challenges and human needs, it is important to provide clean and accessible water. Nanostructured materials offer a significant role in wastewater treatment with diminished capital and operational expense, low dose, and pollutant selectivity. Specifically, the nanocomposites of cellulose with inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have drawn a prodigious interest because of the extraordinary cellulose properties, high explicit surface area, and pollutant selectivity of NPs. Integrating inorganic NPs with cellulose biopolymers for wastewater treatment is a promising advantage for inorganic NPs, such as colloidal stability, agglomeration prevention, and easy isolation of magnetic material after use. This article presents a comprehensive overview of water treatment approaches following wastewater remediation by green and environmentally friendly cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles-based bio-nanocomposites. The functionalization of cellulose, functionalization mechanism, and engineered hybrid materials were thoroughly discussed. Moreover, we highlighted the purification of wastewater through the composites of cellulose/inorganic nanoparticles through adsorption, photocatalytic and antibacterial approach.

Lignin-based spherical particles have recently gained popularity due to their characteristic and the usage of biopolymeric material. In this study, lignin-based spherical particles were prepared using choline chloride at different pH values, ranging from 2 to 10. Their dispersive, microstructural, and physicochemical properties were studied by a variety of techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis. The best results were obtained for the particles prepared at pH 5 and 7, which had a spherical shape without a tendency to form aggregates and agglomerates. The lignin-based spherical particles were used for the immobilization of lipase, a model enzyme capable of catalyzing a wide range of transformations. It was shown that the highest relative activity of immobilized lipase was obtained after 24 h of immobilization at 30 °C and pH 7, using 100 mg of the support. Moreover, the immobilized lipase exhibited enhanced stability under harsh process conditions, and demonstrated high reusability, up to 87% after 10 cycles, depending on the support used. In the future, the described approach to enzyme immobilization based on lignin spheres may play a significant role in the catalytic synthesis of organic and fine chemicals, with high utility value.

A fast microwave-assisted method was used to grow zinc oxide. The synthesis was carried out under three different pH conditions (8, 10 and 12) with the precipitation agent triethylamine. The obtained materials were comprehensively characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), low-temperature N2 sorption (BET model), and analysis of electrokinetic potential and thermal stability (TGA). It was established that the pH value had a significant impact on the crystallinity, morphology and thermal stability of the final products. The primary purpose of this study was to use the synthesised materials in a process of photodegradation (in the UV light range) of the model organic pollutant – 4-chlorophenol (20 mg/dm3). The photo-oxidation tests showed that the obtained zinc oxide materials exhibit good photodegradation and mineralisation efficiency. Moreover, the kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol were determined based on the pseudo-first-order model, assuming the Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism.

Dye-contaminated wastewater discharge from textile and dye manufacturing industries is reported as a world worse water polluter due to the toxic and mutagenic behavior of dyes. Peroxidase, one of the key enzymes of oxidoreductases, is widely distributed in nature and has been currently exploited in industries for various applications. Widespread applications of peroxidases are associated with their nonspecific nature towards a wide spectrum of substrates such as phenols, aromatic amines, pesticides, antibiotics, and synthetic dyes. The present study explored the potential of ammonium sulfate precipitated partially purified Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis leaves peroxidase for degradation of reactive textile dyes Remazol Turquoise Blue 133 G and Drim Red CL4BN. Various physico-chemical parameters such as pH (2–9), temperature (20–70 ℃), enzyme activity (3–24 U/mL), concentrations of H2O2 (0.4–1.4 Mm) and dye (10–100 mg/L) were optimized for enzymatic decolorization of both dyes’ solution. Studies revealed that maximum degradation (95%) of Remazol Turquoise Blue 133 G with peroxidase was achieved with 25 mg/L of initial dye concentration, in the presence of 0.8 mM hydrogen peroxide with 45 min of incubation time, at pH 3, 4, and 5, and 70 °C. Maximal decolorization (97%) of Drim Red CL4BN was obtained at pH 2.0, in 10 min of incubation time at 45 ℃ using o-dianisidine hydrochloride as a redox mediator. In conclusion, the findings illustrate the prospect of Brassica oleracea peroxidase to remediate dye pollutants and dye-based industrial effluents in a green technology theme. Graphical abstract

In this study, lignin-based spherical particles (Lig-IL) with the use of 1-(propoxymethyl)-1H-imidazolium hydrogen sulfate were prepared in different biopolymer and ionic liquid (IL) weight ratios. The application of IL during the preparation of spherical particles is an innovative method, which may be beneficial for further applications. The particles were obtained with the use of the soft-templating method and their chemical, structural and morphological characterization was performed. The spherical shape of products and their size (91–615 nm) was confirmed with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and the particle size distribution results. The attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra were analyzed to identify functional groups of all precursors and produced material and it was confirmed, that all materials exhibit characteristic hydroxyl and carboxylic groups, but the presence of carbonyl group was detected. Moreover, the zeta potential analysis was performed to evaluate the electrokinetic behavior of obtained materials. It was confirmed, that all materials are colloidally stable in pH above 4. Produced lignin-based spherical particles were used for evaluation of their antibacterial properties. Particles were tested against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a gram-positive bacterium, and Escherichia coli (E. coli), a gram-negative one. It was observed, that only the material with the highest addition of IL showed the antibacterial properties against both strains. A reduction of 50% in the number of microorganisms was observed for particles with the addition of hydrogen sulfate ionic liquid in a 1:1 ratio after 1 h. However, all prepared materials exhibited the antibacterial activity against a gram-positive bacterium.

In recent decades, enzyme-based biocatalytic systems have garnered increasing interest in industrial and applied research for catalysis and organic chemistry. Many enzymatic reactions have been applied to sustainable and environmentally friendly production processes, particularly in the pharmaceutical, fine chemicals, and flavor/fragrance industries. However, only a fraction of the enzymes available has been stepped up towards industrial-scale manufacturing due to low enzyme stability and challenging separation, recovery, and reusability. In this context, immobilization and co-immobilization in robust support materials have emerged as valuable strategies to overcome these inadequacies by facilitating repeated or continuous batch operations and downstream processes. To further reduce separations, it can be advantageous to use multiple enzymes at once in one pot. Enzyme co-immobilization enables biocatalytic synergism and reusability, boosting process efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Several studies on multi-enzyme immobilization and co-localization propose kinetic advantages of the enhanced turnover number for multiple enzymes. This review spotlights recent progress in developing versatile biocatalytic cascade systems by multi-enzyme co-immobilization on environmentally friendly biopolymers and nanostructured materials and their application scope in the chemical and biotechnological industries. After a succinct overview of carrier-based and carrier-free immobilization/co-immobilizations, co-immobilization of enzymes on a range of biopolymer and nanomaterials-based supports is thoroughly compiled with contemporary and state-of-the-art examples. This study provides a new horizon in developing effective and innovative multi-enzymatic systems with new possibilities to fully harness the adventure of biocatalytic systems.

Noninvasive, continuous glucose detection can provide some insights into daily fluctuations in blood glucose levels, which can help us balance diet, exercise, and medication. Since current commercially available glucose sensors can barely provide real-time glucose monitoring and usually imply different invasive sampling, there is an extraordinary need to develop new harmless methods for detecting glucose in non-invasive body fluids. Therefore, it is crucial to design (bio)sensors that can detect very low levels of glucose (down to tens of µM) normally found in sweat or tears. Apart from the selection of materials with high catalytic activity for glucose oxidation, it is also important to pay considerable attention to the electrode functionalization process, as it significantly contributes to the overall detection efficiency. In this study, the (ZnO tetrapods) ZnO TPs-based electrodes were functionalized with Nafion and chitosan polymers to compare their glucose detection efficiency. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements have shown that chitosan-modified ZnO TPs require a lower applied potential for glucose oxidation, which may be due to the larger size of chitosan micelles (compared to Nafion micelles), and thus easier penetration of glucose through the chitosan membrane. A novel chitin–ethylene glycol hybrid gel was prepared as a hydrogel electrolyte for electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [Bmim][Ac] as a chitin solvent. Examination of the morphology and topography of the chitin–EG membrane showed a homogeneous and smooth surface, while the thickness of the membrane obtained was 27 µm. The electrochemical performance of the chitin–EG hydrogel electrolyte was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements. The specific capacitance value of the EDLC with chitin–EG hydrogel electrolyte was found to be 109 F g−1 in a potential range from 0 to 0.8 V. The tested hydrogel material was electrochemically stable and did not decompose even after 10,000 GCD cycles. Additionally, the EDLC test cell with chitin–EG hydrogel as electrolyte exhibited superior capacitance retention after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles compared with a commercial glass fiber membrane.

In this work, new MxOy/fucoidan hybrid systems were fabricated and applied in lipase immobilization. Magnesium (MgO) and zirconium (ZrO2) oxides were used as MxOy inorganic matrices. In the first step, the proposed oxides were functionalized with fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus (Fuc). The obtained MgO/Fuc and ZrO2/Fuc hybrids were characterized by means of spectroscopic analyses, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis was performed to determine the thermal stability of the hybrids. Based on the results, the mechanism of interaction between the oxide supports and fucoidan was also determined. Furthermore, the fabricated MxOy/fucoidan hybrid materials were used as supports for the immobilization of lipase from Aspergillus niger, and a model reaction (transformation of p-nitrophenyl palmitate to p-nitrophenol) was performed to determine the catalytic activity of the proposed biocatalytic system. In that reaction, the immobilized lipase exhibited high apparent and specific activity (145.5 U/gcatalyst and 1.58 U/mgenzyme for lipase immobilized on MgO/Fuc; 144.0 U/gcatalyst and 2.03 U/mgenzyme for lipase immobilized on ZrO2/Fuc). The immobilization efficiency was also confirmed using spectroscopic analyses (FTIR and XPS) and confocal microscopy.

Purpose of Review In the presented review, we have summarized recent achievements on the use of immobilized oxidoreductases for biodegradation of hazardous organic pollutants including mainly dyes, pharmaceuticals, phenols, and bisphenols. In order to facilitate process optimization and achievement of high removal rates, effect of various process conditions on biodegradation has been highlighted and discussed. Recent Findings Current reports clearly show that immobilized oxidoreductases are capable of efficient conversion of organic pollutants, usually reaching over 90% of removal rate. Further, immobilized enzymes showed great recyclability potential, allowing their reuse in numerous of catalytic cycles. Summary Collected data clearly indicates immobilized oxidoreductases as an efficient biocatalytic tools for removal of hazardous phenolic compounds, making them a promising option for future water purification. Data shows, however, that both immobilization and biodegradation conditions affect conversion efficiency; therefore, process optimization is required to achieve high removal rates. Nevertheless, we have demonstrated future trends and highlighted several issues that have to be solved in the near-future research, to facilitate large-scale application of the immobilized oxidoreductases in wastewater treatment.

Despite many studies concerning dyes decolourisation, we propose a novel, cheap, eco-friendly and sustainable solution for highly effective dyes removal based on electrospun materials and immobilised enzyme. Our study provides proof-of-concept for the immobilisation of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on polyamide 6 electrospun fibres by adsorption and covalent binding, and application for dyes decolourisation from imitating polluted sea waters. The highest relative activity of immobilised HRP was obtained after immobilisation performed at 50 °C and pH 7 for 60 min for adsorption method, as well as using 3% of glutaraldehyde concentration, 70 min of process time, 60 °C and pH 7 for covalent binding. Biocatalytic systems produced were found to possess high catalytic properties and were used for decolourisation of Reactive Black 5 and Malachite Green textile dyes from solutions imitating polluted sea waters, that is a novel approach for removal of pollutants from aqueous solutions. The highest decolourisation efficiencies of dyes were obtained after 60 min of treatment at pH 7 and temperature 25 °C and reached over 70%. In the future, the presented approach based on use of enzymes immobilised in decolourisation processes, might play significant role in industrial removal of dyes.

The occurrence of emerging contaminants, such as estrogens, in secondary and tertiary treated effluents and in sewage-impacted water bodies is one of the major obstacles to the implementation of water reuse. This review critically evaluates the performance of emerging process of enzymatic degradation of estrogens, and its efficiency. The data collected from peer-review literature show that enzymes have been extensively applied (in both free and immobilized form) in estrogen removal. Amongst others, the use of laccase as a catalyst provides over 90% removal of estrogens. Immobilized enzymes can overcome some limitations of the free biocatalysts, including reusability. Research evidence points to the formation of by-products, such as dimers and trimers. Nevertheless, estrogenic activity assessment indicates a reduction in toxicity after enzyme treatment. The cost and stability of enzymes, as well as their performance in a real wastewater matrix, are the major obstacles to the implementation of enzymatic processes in wastewater treatment. Continued endeavors are required to enhance the successful application of enzymes in the wastewater treatment industry. Highlights: Processes of enzyme-supported conversion of estrogens are reviewed and discussed. Laccase is the most commonly applied enzyme and achieves over 90% estrogen removal. Existing research gaps are highlighted and future recommendations are provided.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of zinc oxide nanoparticles as a photocatalyst for photodegradation of two model non-ionic surfactants (Triton X-100 and C12E10). The first part of the investigation was focused on the synthesis and characterization of ZnO nanoparticles, since its crystalline structure strongly impacts its photocatalytic properties. Based on the results of the XRD analysis, it was concluded that the obtained material occurred in the form of hexagonal wurtzite with a polycrystalline structure. FT-IR and XPS analyses were used to elucidate and confirm the nanomaterial structure, whereas investigation of N2 adsorption/desorption and SEM/TEM imaging allowed to establish that the synthesized ZnO was characterized as a mesoporous material with uniform, spherical shape and particle size fluctuating between 90 and 130 nm. The second part of the study included spectrophotometric assessment of the photodegradation process. The use of the obtained ZnO nanoparticles allowed to achieve efficient photodegradation of both C12E10 (92%) and Triton X-100 (82%) after 1 h of UV irradiation. The Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism was used to describe the reaction kinetics. Subsequent LC-MS/MS analysis of the residues indicated that the degradation mechanism is most likely based on both central fission of the surfactant molecules with further terminal oxidation of poly(ethylene glycol) and terminal oxidation leading to carboxylic derivatives of surfactants.

Lignin-modifying enzymes (LMEs) are impactful biocatalysts in environmental remediation applications. However, LMEs-assisted experimental degradation neglects the molecular basis of pollutant degradation. Furthermore, throughout the remediation process, the inherent hazards of environmental pollutants remain untapped for in-depth toxicological endpoints.
