2007年12月19日および2008年12月16日開催の研究会における講演より10編の査読論文を収録, Space Plasma Symposium FY2007 and FY2008, A low aspect ratio, high-density helicon plasma has been produced using a flat spiral antenna in the Large Helicon Plasma Device (LHPD) at Institute of Space and Astronautical Science / Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (ISAS / JAXA). The experimental method employed and some examples of the experimental results are presented. We describe in detail the behavior of the electron density as a function of the radio frequency (rf) input power. In particular, we focus on the behavior of the threshold power, which strongly depends on the magnetic field strength near the antenna, for the discharge mode transition from Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) to Helicon Wave Plasma (HWP). ISAS/JAXAスペース・プラズマ共同研究設備において、種々のスペース・プラズマ関連実験に対応できるプラズマを容易に生成可能な大容量(内径73.8cm、長さ486cm)ヘリコンプラズマ装置を開発したので、装置の概要、この装置で生成されるプラズマの特性について報告する。本ヘリコン装置では、励起アンテナとして真空容器端のクウォーツ・ガラス窓外大気中に設置されたフラット・スパイラル・アンテナを使用している。ヘリコン放電の場合、n(sub e)≧10(exp12) /立法センチメートルという高密度プラズマを1kW以下の入力パワー(周波数7MHz)で生成可能という高効率rf放電を達成している。因みに、現在までに使用したガス種はアルゴン、ヘリウム、水素であり、上記高密度モードはアルゴン、ヘリウムで達成された。また、(1)励起アンテナ近傍の磁場配位を調節する、(2)励起アンテナからの電磁放射パターンを変化させる、という2通りの方法でプラズマの径方向密度プロフィルを容易に制御できることを見出した。, A large-volume (73.8 cm in diameter and 486 cm in axial length) helicon-plasma device has been developed at ISAS/JAXA in order to perform various space-plasma related experiments. With the use of a large (43 cm in diameter) flat-spiral antenna located just outside a quartz-glass window at one end of the vacuum vessel, the device is capable of producing high-density plasma (gas species used so far are argon, helium, and hydrogen) of n(sub e) that is greater than or equal to 10(exp 12) /cu cm with moderate rf input power of less than 1 kW (at 7 MHz), showing excellent discharge efficiency. A large diameter (73.8 cm), high-density helicon plasma with a short axial length (81 cm) has been successfully produced using a flat spiral antenna. The electron plasma density can reach ~ 6*10^12cm^-3 with the input rf power of < 4 kW. The stronger the degree of magnetic field convergence is from the antenna to the bulk plasma region, the lower the minimum input rf power required is to obtain a helicon plasma. This signifies the important role of the magnetic field structure near the antenna and is similar to the previous result obtained with a helicon plasma of a much longer axial length of 486 cm.

A large-volume, helicon-plasma source (73.8 cm in diameter and 486 cm in axial length) has been developed to be used to investigate various wave phenomena observed in space plasmas, and its characteristics have been investigated. The discharge antenna used is a flat spiral type installed just outside the quartz-glass window at one end of the vacuum vessel, where the background magnetic field (B-field) is nonuniform. Antennae of two different sizes are used: 23 cm in diameter with 6 spiral turns and 43 cm in diameter with 4 spiral turns (the number of spiral turns is smaller for the latter so as not to increase the antenna inductance significantly). The uniform B-field in the central plasma region can be varied up to 2 kG. The plasma density after the density jump for Ar and He plasmas can exceed 10 12 cm-3 with approximately 600 W of the injected rf power at 7 MHz. The reason for this excellent discharge efficiency is discussed, considering the power balance between input and loss. It has been found that the radial density profile can be varied rather easily by applying the following two means: 1) by changing the B-field configurations near the antenna by adjusting the field strength of the auxiliary coil installed near the antenna and 2) by changing the antenna radiation-field patterns by using the different rf feeding points on the antenna. By changing the magnetic field configuration near the antenna, the threshold power and the degree of the density change in a density jump can be varied. The electron density reaches the maximum away from the antenna; then decays weakly along the axial direction.

In order to realize long-lived electric propulsion systems, we have been investigating an electrodeless plasma thruster. In our concept, a helicon plasma is accelerated by the magnetic nozzle for the thrusts production. In addition, the electromagnetic thrust can be enhanced by the additional radio-frequency rotating electric field (REF) power in the magnetic nozzle. In this study, a direct measurement of the electromagnetic thrust and a probe measurement have been conducted using a laboratory model of the thruster under the condition without the REF power input. Fromthrust measurement, it is shown that the thruster produces a sub-milli-newton order electromagnetic thrust force without the additional REF power. The thrust force and the density jump are observed due to the discharge mode transition from the inductive coupled plasma to the helicon wave excited plasma. The thermal thrust is theoretically estimated, and the total thrust force, which is a sum of the electromagnetic and the thermal thrust force and specific impulse are calculated to be up to 650 μN (plasma production power of 400 W, Ar gas mass flow rate of 1.0 mg/s) and 210 s (plasma production power of 400 W, Ar gas mass flow rate of 0.2 mg/s), respectively., {"references":["H. In order to overcome this difficulty, some novel methods of electrodeless discharge and electromagnetic acceleration have been proposed by making use of a compact helicon plasma source. With this application in mind, we here discuss some basic elements on the behaviour of a collisional, cylindrical plasma, when it is driven by an external time-varying electromagnetic field. The electrodeless plasma acceleration as well as the plasma production was examined from the viewpoint of electromagnetic acceleration which is different from the VASIMR magnetic nozzle expansion. A proposal of continuous electromagnetic acceleration 'Lissajous' was fully understood by estimating the thrust and specific impulse.
