The COVID-19 pandemic, and the measures taken to control its spread, are an unprecedented, large-scale stressor. While the pandemic is affecting all age groups, adolescents may be especially vulnerable given that this is a high-risk period for developing internalizing disorders (anxiety and depression). Worse still, many stressors relevant to internalizing disorders’ onset are common at this time (e.g., social isolation, reduced activity, uncertain prospects, disruption in the home), rendering this an especially high-risk period. However, there are tremendous individual differences in stress responses, raising the question of how to identify those at greatest risk for negative responses. The possibility of identifying neural predictors of youth vulnerability to the pandemic and its long term effects has strong implications for identifying at risk youth, models of stress and mental health, and targeted prevention in the context of a large-scale, long-lasting stressor. In this study, we will invite youth to complete an MRI session, and and to complete a set of online questionnaires.
